Where am I going with this? Listen, any good romance story is all about conflict, right? You take any of your teenage dramas that you see on TV and they're all about teasing you with the will-they, won't-they, get-together thing.
And when they finally do get together, they break them up again.
The writers are creating conflict.
Conflict? Conflict! And what's the most heart-wrenching form of conflict? Forbidden love.
Look at Romeo and Juliet.
For 400 years we've been moved by their pain.
And why? "'Tis but thy name that is my enemy.
" Which sounds crazy, that would never happen today.
But back then, it was a totally plausible and acceptable no-go zone.
Along with class, race, religion, what have you.
All making for juicy conflicted stories about reasons people shouldn't be together but ultimately do, because love always triumphs.
Didn't Romeo and Juliet kill themselves? How was that a triumph? Yeah Nathan, how was that a triumph? The point is most of the taboos that kept people apart are over and done with now.
They're not taboos anymore.
So it's a stretch for audiences to buy into most of them.
We need new taboos.
You're saying that homosexuality is taboo? NO! No! No, no, but for a lot of people it is.
Like she needs to hear this right now.
But there is that conflict.
There is that hurdle that the lovers need to go through.
The story is about their journey.
A journey filled with conflict and at the end, the goal is to be together.
Taboos be damned.
OK! I'm officially more confused than ever! Your mom once wrote a whole essay on this stuff for school.
She was a thousand times more articulate than I am.
Oh! She really cared about this stuff.
She was a really progressive thinker.
