Movie Night with Dad

So you What? You've never kissed Kenny? No! Well, it's just that you guys are always together and, everyone already thinks you're going out so, why not? Vanessa! You know how much that pisses me off.
Everybody says that.
They all say that.
- But he's like a brother! - A brother to me.
I know, I know.
That's what you always say.
Just, because you were confused You were confused about me.
So Doesn't it make perfect sense that you could just as easily be confused about him? You guys are close.
Really close.
Almost as close as we are.
- But it's different! - How? I don't know I just know.
Besides, he has no interest in me in that way.
All guys have the exact same interest in girls.
Not him.
Why? Is he gay? No.
Definitely not.
He's all in love with Alicia Van Haren.
And like a million other girls.
OK, so he has the same exact interest as every other guy.
But not with me! All I'm saying is maybe you should kiss him too.
Just to be sure.
Unless you are sure.
Are you sure? Hello! Hey, Blossom.
Vegetables overload here.
Don't worry, I'm thinking about adding bacon to this somehow.
What are you making? I have no idea.
I just know that 50% of this needs to be eaten tonight.
Aaah it's everything-in- the-fridge-must-go à la dad.
So, how was school? OK.
Vanessa alright? - She seemed a little - Yeah, she's cool.
We talked about it.
What was it? It was just a thing about It was just a misunderstanding.
You know you can tell me anything, right? I know.
It's just that I'm not even sure of anything, anyways.
So it doesn't matter.
Sure it matters.
If you try to work through something, we can I dunno bounce ideas off each other, or something.
I can try to help you work through it.
Not this time, Dad.
This is nice.
We haven't done our movie thing in a while.
Perfect seats and everything! Yeah.
I could totally use the escape.
Oh no! It's the stress of being in the closet.
Great.
He's freaking out.
Defuse.
Defuse! Not that the world's being evil or anything.
Just lots of homework lately.
Chemistry is really owning me.
There's your in: Vanessa is her study-partner.
Go on! Well, it's good that you've got Vanessa.
To help you get through it She's a good friend to have.
So, you two sorted through your issues? Oh great.
He's prying again.
I think so.
Not that it's any of your business.
Change the subject.
So what's this movie about anyways? I haven't even heard of it.
It's an indie movie, only playing here tonight.
Sounded right up our allies.
So what is it about? Why, it's a gay romantic comedy! No, I'm not obvious! This was a bad idea.
I don't want to give it away.
It's a romance.
That's all you need to know.
It's called "Where There's a Will, There's a William.
" Is this him hinting again? Argh! He totally knows! Is this a gay It's a gay movie? Yeah, and both their names are William.
I gather that.
This was a really bad idea! It's just, you know a romantic comedy.
And the fact that it's got two men doesn't matter, and And both their names are William.
You've said that.
Just tell him.
This is Dad's messed up way of telling you that he's OK with you Dad Yes, Rose? Oh my God! Here it comes! Tell her it'll be ok! Tell her she can tell you anything! You can tell me anything.
I love you no matter what.
Oh my god! This is too messed up.
It's like he's reading off a pamphlet or something.
Oh my god.
You're making this worse! So why are you so into the gay scene lately? I just I'm just What does the pamphlet say about this, jackass! I just love a good comedy and Johnny said this was a good one.
Say something! Listen I just think these days, the best stories are the gay ones.
They're the truest.
Truest? Truest? The most heartwrenching.
Where am I going with this? Listen, any good romance story is all about conflict, right? You take any of your teenage dramas that you see on TV and they're all about teasing you with the will-they, won't-they, get-together thing.
And when they finally do get together, they break them up again.
The writers are creating conflict.
Conflict? Conflict! And what's the most heart-wrenching form of conflict? Forbidden love.
Look at Romeo and Juliet.
For 400 years we've been moved by their pain.
And why? "'Tis but thy name that is my enemy.
" Which sounds crazy, that would never happen today.
But back then, it was a totally plausible and acceptable no-go zone.
Along with class, race, religion, what have you.
All making for juicy conflicted stories about reasons people shouldn't be together but ultimately do, because love always triumphs.
Didn't Romeo and Juliet kill themselves? How was that a triumph? Yeah Nathan, how was that a triumph? The point is most of the taboos that kept people apart are over and done with now.
They're not taboos anymore.
So it's a stretch for audiences to buy into most of them.
We need new taboos.
You're saying that homosexuality is taboo? NO! No! No, no, but for a lot of people it is.
Like she needs to hear this right now.
But there is that conflict.
There is that hurdle that the lovers need to go through.
The story is about their journey.
A journey filled with conflict and at the end, the goal is to be together.
Taboos be damned.
OK! I'm officially more confused than ever! Your mom once wrote a whole essay on this stuff for school.
She was a thousand times more articulate than I am.
Oh! She really cared about this stuff.
She was a really progressive thinker.
You have no idea.
