Patience (2025) s01e05 Episode Script

My Brother's Keeper

1
They hang them from the walls.
It's why they call it
Clifford's Tower.
Must be easier ways to get
a building named after you.
That's what my father used
to say when he brought me here.
You got around, you and your dad.
Yeah, well,
yeah, he wanted to show me
the whole world, so.
Thank you, Patience.
Wh- For what?
For distracting me,
I've been dreading
going to pick up Alfie.
Thank you, Detective Bea, for
..well, for making things easier.
That's what friends are for.
Speaking of friends,
I'm having some drinks
for my birthday on Friday,
just at the pub.
You might have other plans or
may not fancy it,
but, it'd be lovely to celebrate
with you.
Well, you're gonna be late
for Alfie, so.
Yeah. I'd better go.
Got your lunch?
Football boots?
Cupboard under the stairs. Quick.
You seen his test results?
They're available?
Said it'll be 12 hours.
Do you want me to summarise?
No, no, I'll,
I'll read them myself.
All right.
Bye, Mum.
Bye.
Hey, he's gonna be all right,
you know?
Yeah, I know.
So what did Detective Bea say about
the party?
Well, she said it'd be lovely
to celebrate with me.
Yeah, I'm sure she meant it.
OK, so youyou think I should go?
Well, no, I mean,
only you can decide that.
Yeah, but you said that we should be
open to new experiences, right?
Yeah. I mean,
what's the worst that can happen?
Well, I don't know anybody,
I won't fit in.
And what if nobody talks to me?
What if I get her a present she
doesn't like? Where do I start?
OK, it can be tricky,
buying presents for neurotypicals.
Oh. Hold on,
I've got two voice messages.
OK.
It's from a WPC Carmichael.
A police constable, for you? Why?
She's asking to call urgently.
Says Paul Thompson's next of kin.
Something happened to my brother.
So, erm, Mr Waller,
he's the mortician,
he said that Paul,
my brother, Paul Thompson,
said thathe died of
a heart attack and
a circulatory collapse, so.
There'll have to be an
autopsy, Billy.
Nah, the pathologist broke his
arm, so they're not sure when
another one will be available.
They're gonna embalm him.
My brother, not the pathologist.
Here.
Thanks.
I've still got his clothes.
They, erm, asked me to pick out
his clothes.
He loved trains.
I-I can't I can't go back in.
I'll do it. I'll do it.
What are you doing?
I'm looking for signs
of circulatory collapse.
And you are?
Erm, I'm a friend of
Billy Thompson.
Well, you shouldn't be in here.
Well, I brought his clothes.
Mr Thompson forgot to take
the things his brother was wearing.
They need a wash, I'm afraid.
Erm, sorry, there were no signs
of circulatory collapse,
but Billy was told that that was
a factor in his brother's death.
Well, to be honest,
I wouldn't know.
You're a mortician.
Administration and support.
Sorry I'm late.
MACHINE WHIRS
If you guys want to talk amongst
yourselves or anything,
that's fine.
I'm just not really feeling in
the right head space today.
I didn't even know your brother.
Howhow can you even be here?
I'd feel worse at home on me own.
PHONE RINGS
Sorry, everyone.
That might be Paul's fiancee.
She's
She's, er, working in France.
Billy, you should answer it.
PHONE CONTINUES TO RING
Hello, is that Ophelia?
What do you mean,
Paul's disappeared?
DOOR SHUTS
Thought I heard a car engine.
I, erm, I ran out
but there was no vehicle.
Was anyone else in the building?
No-one.
It's usually just me and Frank,
or his assistant.
The pathologist, Dr di Marco,
he was supposed to be here yesterday
to conduct the postmortem.
He broke his arm, didn't he?
So Frank goes for a brew,
and then persons unknown grab
the body
and make off with it.
That's what you think happened?
What other explanation could
there be?
You'd already started
the embalming process?
A few minutes before.
Ahead of the autopsy?
That's not uncommon.
We'd no idea when we'd be assigned
another pathologist.
What chemicals do you use?
Erm, my own formula.
Er, formaldehyde, naturally.
Strychnine, ethanol,
activated charcoal and, erm,
this may surprise you,
cognac.
Frank!
Cheaper than anything you can buy
off the shelf and it lasts longer.
Was the body drained of blood?
We do that at the same time.
Then, he haven't lost much.
I'm just trying
to establish if there's
a possibility that Paul Thompson
walked?
Good grief, no.
At the insertion stage,
the eyes and the mouth have been
sewn up.
BELLS CHIME
Right, I've not seen this
one before.
It's my first puzzle.
My father would show me
the whole shape,
and then remove pieces
and ask me to put it back
together again.
So you need to work from the top.
So we need to make sure that our
finger's here,
pull the bottom one out,
then this one just slides out
like this.
Think you can put that one back?
Backward induction. You know,
in chess it's known as
retrograde analysis.
Yeah, it somehow made it easier
to solve,
seeing the completed puzzle
and knowing that there was
a solution.
Look at that.
It's all back together.
There you go.
Yeah, speaking of puzzles,
have you decided whether or not
to attend DI Metcalf's party or
what gift to get her?
I just know it needs
to communicate what you feel about
the person.
DOORBELL RINGS
Oh, I'll get it.
Billy. Whatwhat are
you doing here?
Hi. Erm, I, er,
I can't get it out my head that
Paul might still be alive.
Look, I know, I know, it sounds
bonkers but when I was young,
we used to have this Bible
and there was this drawing
of Lazarus.
He was climbing out the tomb
and I just
I just keep on imagining Paul doing
the exact same thing.
He was pronounced dead, Billy.
I know. I know.
I-I keep telling myself that.
I'm clutching at straws. But
Look, will you just come with me
to his flat?
Please. Just to put my mind at rest.
Please. Patience,
right, you're the most rational
person that I know.
Paul?
Billy, is it usually this untidy?
No, Paul's very orderly, very neat.
Oh, God, Patience
Patience, is that him?
Is that him?
No, no, no. No, Billy,
that's not your brother.
Billy, he's alive.
He's alive, whoever he is.
We have to call an ambulance.
It's the tie I took to
the mortuary.
It
It suggests that Paul was here.
Erm, so Wait, er
Erm
So, er, Paul waswaswas alive
and now he's dead,
and then heand thenand then,
and then he was alive again,
and now he's killed someone.
No, no, no, no, he's not dead.
Who's not dead?
The man in the kitchen.
Billy, Billy, just listen to me.
We have no way of knowing who
stabbed that man.
But what we do know is that
Paul's tie was used
to save his life.
Just, er, don't, erm,
tell the police that I took
the tie to the mortuary. I
At least until we know
Paul's alive.
Billy
I I
Patience, please.
Please.
Is that the victim's?
We think so.
Thank you.
Sacha Davidson, Exec Assistant, AFT.
What's AFT?
Let's find out.
It's a food processing company.
And your brother worked there,
you say, in research?
Yes, he collapsed there too,
a party, so I've been told.
What kind of party?
Erm, celebratory drinks.
They'd won a case at the High Court.
I think I read something about that.
Was it something to do
with additives?
Yes, some families claim
that colourants
and sweeteners that AFT added
to certain food groups
for children are linked
to behavioural issues, so.
And what were you doing here, Billy,
you and Patience, at Paul's flat?
Well, Billy thinks that his brother
may still be alive.
But youyou heard them in
the mortuary,
they stitched his eyes
and lips shut.
Jake.
Why would anybody steal
a body from a mortuary?
To cover up the cause of death.
You said Thompson died of
a heart attack.
Well, that's what
the paramedic said, so.
And you think it's suspicious?
Well, we don't know.
The autopsy was supposed
to happen yesterday
but the pathologist broke his arm.
Which now seems a bit coincidental.
The pathologist, Dr di Marco.
Uh, Charlie di Marco?
Yes, sir, do you know him?
Uh, yeah,
we go to the Rotary Club together.
Mm. Well, we checked out
his social media, sir.
His daughter, Anita, she's head of
investor relations at AFT,
the company where Paul Thompson
and Sacha Davidson worked.
Davidson, the guy who got stabbed?
That's correct, sir.
What are you implying?
That maybe someone at AF
was relying on Di Marco
to carry out the autopsy.
What, to fake the findings,
you mean?
And when he wasn't available,
they had to stop
the autopsy from going ahead,
by other means.
And where does Davidson fit in?
He knew too much.
Had to be silenced.
Ugh, did I mention
I've got a headache?
Sorry, sir.
How would you like us to proceed?
Don't approach AFT until I've talked
to Charlie di Marco.
LIFT PINGS
Oh, ma'am, that's everything
I could find on AFT.
A quick headline would be good.
Collective action, ma'am,
brought by three families.
On behalf of many more?
That's right, more than 600 of them.
They reckon AFT would've had
to pay up to 300 million
in damages, had they lost.
But they didn't.
Case not proven.
The families claim that
AFT continued
to use certain additives in their
food products,
despite being aware of
a suspected link
to behavioural issues in children.
But the judge was satisfied that
they'd taken reasonable steps
to make their food products safe
once they were made aware.
What kind of behavioural issues?
Er, hyperactivity,
attention problems.
I think. It's all in file, ma'am.
Thank you.
Yeah.
LIFT PINGS
How, was it?
Awkward. Mm. What did he say?
"For those bastards, are you effing
kidding me?" Words to that effect.
But his daughter's on the board.
Not for much longer, maybe.
Di Marco said he's been urging her
to leave.
What's stopping her?
A stock exchange listing
next month.
Well, I'm sorry, sir,
if I've compromised a friendship
for you.
Well, we won't be playing foursomes
at the next golf day,
but it was worth it.
Di Marco was so keen to prove he's
not in AFT's pocket,
he sent me a video his daughter
had shared with him.
It was taken during
the drinks party AFT held after
the court ruled in their favour.
Er, he says, "This is the work event
at which Paul Thompson died."
ON PHONE: This was a team effort,
and together we did it.
So congratulations. Let's have
a drink, enjoy yourselves.
AUDIENCE CHEERS AND APPLAUDS
Yeah. We had nibbles.
Some drinks. So what?
There was enough bubbly to fill
a bath.
And your point is?
As CEO, wasn't this in bad taste,
given the difficulties
those families
and their children have experienced?
The future of AFT rested on
that case.
My team had worked on it for months.
I think a bit of relief,
happiness even,
at the outcome is forgivable.
Hmm.
Paul Thompson doesn't seem
very happy.
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
Perhaps he'd started
to feel unwell.
This was taken at 12:43pm.
Paul didn't collapse till
after 3:00.
A colleague of mine is lying in
an induced coma,
after being stabbed multiple times.
Isn't that what you should
be investigating?
Sacha Davidson was at this party.
We believe the attack on him may be
linked to Paul's death.
What a snake pit.
A rabbit warren, you mean.
They're all shagging each other.
Who is?
Well, Paul Thompson for starters.
With Sacha Davidson?
Nope. Anita di Marco.
The pathologist's daughter?
The very same.
When Paul broke it off,
she was caught on CCTV running her
key down
the side of his Audi in
the staff car park.
She only kept her job because he
declined to press charges.
You've got more?
The CEO, Mrs And-Your-Point-Is?
With who?
The executive chef.
They have their own chef?
Crazy, innit?
Mason Jenner.
Will run his name in the PNC.
He was caught with his hands in
the till at some fancy restaurant,
served two years.
I said Patience could wait in your
office, boss. She seemed upset.
Patience, you all right?
I, erm, I'm sorry,
I should've told you.
Told me what?
I-I didn't
I didn't wanna betray our
friendship, but by avoiding doing
so I would've betrayed my friendship
with Billy instead and
Patience, it's all right.
Tell me what?
The tie that was used as
a tourniquet on Sacha Davidson.
Yellow with red trains, right?
Yeah.
It was the same tie that
Billy brought to
the mortuary for his brother
to wear.
What, a similar tie?
Identical. I think
I think Billy's right.
I think Paul's alive
and he stabbed Sacha Davidson.
His eyes and lips were sewn shut.
And, blood clot analysis
suggests that
Davidson was stabbed several hours
before you found him,
while Paul Thompson's body was still
in the mortuary.
Yeah, but that assumes that
the information given
to us by the embalmer, Frank Lawrie,
is correct.
And I don't believe him to be
a reliable witness.
What makes you say that?
I'mI'm sensitive to smells,
DS Hunter.
And the aroma of cognac was far more
powerful on him than in
the embalming fluid.
We'll try again tomorrow.
Come on.
Aaargh!
When hell is full,
the dead still walk the earth.
Aaaah.
Aaah.
I've been trying to work up
the courage to tell the truth.
Which is what?
Paul Thompson disappeared from
the mortuary at
..2:30am.
Not 7:00.
I also wasn't truthful about
the car.
I heard footsteps.
I think he walked.
With his eyes stitched shut?
My hands were shaking too much
to sew anything up.
Why lie about it?
I needed time to sober up.
What, and you believe him?
A hopeless drunk?
If he's unreliable then we should
also discount his first statement.
It doesn't matter which we choose
to believe.
Either way, it doesn't prove that
Paul Thompson is alive,
or that he stabbed Sacha Davidson.
But what about the knife we found in
the dishwasher, sir?
The fingerprints matched those found
elsewhere in the property.
Because they're Paul Thompson's,
it's his flat, his knife.
DS Hunter managed to speak to
the fiancee, sir,
Ophelia Lawrence, to follow up on
what Patience told us.
And she said Paul Thompson was
convinced that
AFT would lose the case.
When they won,
he called her from the party,
said it was a victory built on lies,
claimed he could prove it.
Paul worked in Research at AFT.
Perhaps something came across his
desk that would've damaged
the case in court
and he kept a copy of it.
Is that what Davidson was doing in
his flat,
looking for stolen research?
Maybe Paul mentioned his misgivings
to the wrong person
and they're worried it's gonna cost
them 300 million in damages.
Yeah, not to mention
the millions the execs stand
to lose personally if the stock
exchange listing has to be pulled.
If Paul Thompson is dead,
then, maybe he was killed
to stop him talking.
Can we prove this? Any of it?
It's pretty circumstantial.
PARTY CHATTER ON LAPTOP
See, that's Anita di Marco.
And there, sir, we think that might
be Paul Thompson's glass.
She could be putting something
in it.
It's not circumstantial.
It's nonexistent.
But Anita di Marco had already been
jilted by Paul Thompson,
she was angry enough
to damage his car.
She'd been disciplined, sir,
was maybe in danger of dismissal,
with the threat of
losing out on the float
and very lucrative share options.
Perhaps it wouldn't take too much
to persuade her they'd all be better
off with Paul out of the way.
Ha, no. No, no, no, no, no.
This is not happening.
I'm not going on another
fishing trip
with someone called di Marco.
Bring me some real evidence.
I don't know, a USB stick,
a glass with traces of cyanide.
A body that, God forbid,
could undergo an actual autopsy!
Erm, can you play that video
again, please?
Mm.
PARTY CHATTER ON LAPTOP
BELL CHIMES IN DISTANCE
The Chief's asking if we should
put out
a statement about Paul Thompson.
Missing person or missing body?
She hasn't made up her mind.
Can you ask her to hold off?
Buy us more time?
I'll try. But it's her call.
Look, she's nervous that Paul
Thompson might be on the run
and desperate.
And if we haven't warned the public
and he stabs somebody else,
well that's got an IPCC referral
written all over it.
And if he's dead?
Well, frankly, we need another lead.
An appeal for information.
Somebody must've seen something.
Boom. Ask me what backward induction
is, Detective Inspector Metcalf.
Gonna start with hello?
No. I'd prefer you ask me what
backward induction is.
What's backward induction?
So, it's a strategy used to solve
problems when crucial parts of
the information are missing.
So you start with a possible answer,
and then you work backwards.
So, let's assume that Paul Thompson
did walk out of that mortuary.
The paramedics arrived on the scene,
and declared him dead at 3:14pm.
He was taken to the mortuary.
He arrived at the mortuary
and then he disappeared.
So what is the one thing that we are
certain of happening between
the times of him arriving
and him leaving the mortuary?
He was fed embalming fluid.
Yes, exactly.
So if Paul Thompson walked out
alive, what revived him?
OK, well, I looked in to
the embalming fluids
and the ingredients,
and the most intriguing was
activated charcoal.
Just ask me why.
Why?
Because, there are numerous cases
of people surviving tetrodotoxin
poisoning after being administered
activated charcoal.
Often hours after the toxin entered
their bloodstream.
Look, you're gonna have
to repeat that.
Tetrodotoxin.
It's produced in
the liver of puffer fish,
it's known as erm, fugu in Japan.
Erm, it's perfectly safe to eat,
if prepared correctly.
But if not, it can be deadly.
It causes muscle paralysis
and blocks neurotransmissions,
and in some cases mimics
the effect of death in its victims.
So you're saying Paul ate this fish,
and the effects made it seem as if
he'd died?
But the charcoal in
the embalming fluid revived him?
Exactly.
What makes you think he had fugu?
Well, they were serving
bento boxes at the party,
and Paul loves sashimi.
Can we prove any of this?
PARTY CHATTER ON LAPTOP
How did they know he would eat it?
Paul worked at AFT for 15 years.
They knew just what to order.
Traces of tetrodotoxin were detected
in one of
the empty food containers found in
the bins outside AFT, Mason.
Any idea how they got there?
You know what fugu is, I take it?
Perhaps your CV can answer that.
Two years training in Kyoto
to be a sashimi chef,
followed by four more at
a variety of restaurants in Tokyo.
And then four more back here at one
of London's top venues
for Asian fusion cuisine,
specialising in fish and seafood.
We spoke to the restaurant where you
placed the order
for the bento boxes, Mason,
Sushi Okonomi,
they say that fugu's banned
for public sale in the UK,
they would never serve it.
Is there a question coming,
Inspector?
I'll ask you again, Mason.
Do you have any idea how traces
of fugu got into
the bento boxes you served at
the party?
Perhaps the chefs at
Sushi Okonomi ordered kawahagi
but was sent fugu by mistake.
They have a similar texture.
Or, perhaps you acquired it from
the only specialist dining club in
the UK that has
a licence to sell it.
They insist their clientele is
expat Japanese,
but I reckon they might have one or
two local customers.
Shouldn't be too long before their
lawyers process our request
for access to their
distribution list.
Again, Detective, a question.
Are you in a sexual relationship
with AFT's CEO, Bethan Porter?
Were you aware that Paul Thompson
was in possession
of research that could've
jeopardised AFT's successful defence
of a £300 million court case?
Did Bethan Porter offer you money as
an inducement
to murder Paul Thompson by feeding
him poisoned fish
to prevent him revealing what
he knew?
No comment. Did you murder
Hold it there.
City of York Police have issued
an advisory,
warning the public not to approach
Paul Thompson
who is wanted on suspicion
of attempted murder.
You've accused my client of
murdering someone
you know to be alive.
We're leaving.
Billy?
I ermI went for a bike ride
to clear my head
and it was like this when
I came back.
Must've been keeping
the flat under surveillance
and broke in when they saw
a chance.
Is every room the same?
Yep.
Yeah,
they went through everything.
I mean, even the back issues
of my bike magazines
have been ripped to shreds.
So, did they find it?
Did they find what?
Did they find whatever it is your
brother entrusted to you, Billy?
Paul hasn't given me anything.
Patience, I swear. On my life.
Paul is alive, isn't he?
And you know where he is.
Listen, Billy, he is in danger.
If he knows something that
might reverse
the court case, then they're not
just gonna let him be.
There's too much riding on it.
We
We need to try and persuade him
to hand himself in to the police
and tell them that
the stabbing was an accident.
Will you
Will you come and show me
where he's hiding?
Help me talk to him.
I should stay and tidy.
Then tell me where he is.
Paul?
Paul, are you in here?
I-I'm Patience Evans.
I-I'm a friend of Billy's.
He told me to mention the girl
with the two umbrellas.
Paul?
Paul, are you in there?
It's OK. It's OK. Erm
Nobody else knows that you're here.
Erm, I-I've come to try and persuade
you to hand yourself in.
To go to jail, you mean?
No. No, no, no,
I'm sure it won't come to that.
And Billy agrees with me.
Uh-huh.
Why would I put my faith in him?
He didn't even bring me socks.
Look, Paul, you're in danger.
Too right you are.
Keep your hands where I can see 'em.
Where is it? Where's what?
Where is the memory stick?
I swear, I-I haven't got it.
Then who has?
I don'tI don't know.
Turn out your pockets.
I'm gonna count down from five.
And then I'm gonna put
a bullet in your knee.
Please, I don't have it.
Actually, scratch that.
I'm gonna put a bullet in her
knee instead.
What?
Five, four
How can I give you what
I don't have?!
..three
No.
..two
Stop, police! ..one.
GUNSHO
Aaargh!
HE GROANS
SHE SCREAMS
SHE WHIMPERS
Aargh!
SHE SOBS
MUSIC PLAYS OVER SOUND SYSTEM
Are you going to the drinks?
I wish I'd known.
Why?
I would've tried to change my shift.
Maybe we could grab a coffee
some time.
I-I don't drink coffee,
the roasting process produces
I'm asking you on a date,
Miss Evans.
You do go on dates, don't you?
I, erm I dunno, I'll
I'll have to think about it.
Just
Patience.
You came.
Elliot Scott just asked me
on a date.
And?
Well, I told him I needed
to think about it.
You look like you could
use a drink.
Yeah, can I have a still water,
please?
Will, can you grab a still water
for Patience?
Shift up, Jake.
OK.
Do you wanna
Do you wanna take those off?
No.
Oh, er, happy birthday.
Thank you. Gorgeous wrapping.
HE GIGGLES
What?
I mean, that, for you?
It's lovely.
You all right?
Oh, sorry, erm
Um, oh
I'm just I'll go.
Patience?
Patience.
Get Don't touch me!
Sorry. Sorry, just
don't leave like this.
No, I It was a bad idea.
I realise that.
Yeah, I've ruined your party.
No, no, no. You've made my night
by showing up.
And giving me this.
I get it, it protects you.
It eases your worries about
getting hurt.
You know, you make things go easier
for me as well.
Gonna be late for my bus.
