Secrets

1 Stand over there.
Further.
That's it.
- What exactly are we doing, Rebecca? - Shut up! Okay, look.
You either charge me, or let me go.
Not gonna happen, Thomas.
You're bluffing, you're not gonna shoot me.
I don't need to.
You're about to have a terrible fall.
Move! Season 1, Episode 10 "Secrets" Jakob! Jakob, come here a minute.
Come stand beside me.
Come here, I wanna show you something.
(Gun Shots) (Gun Shot) Now, it's your turn.
- Jakob? - Both hands, OK? Bend your arm, that's it.
I want you to look down the sights.
- Okay, you ready? - Jakob, what are you doing? Mom, isn't this cool? Mr.
Novak said I could shoot it.
Tom.
Please.
You're doing great, buddy, you're doing great.
Don't worry about your mom.
She's no fun, is she? Now, squeeze gently.
(Gun Shot) Jakob: Whoa! Hello, beauty.
You take my breath away, you know that? Jakob: Can I do it again? Of course.
Ready? Remember what I told you.
Dana, who knew? Your little boy's a natural, huh? Jakob: That was awesome! Novak: He'll be a crack shot one day, won't he, Dana? (Phone vibrates) Zach, would you give me a break? I'm not on call until noon.
Who is this? It's Vanessa, who the hell is this? It's Rebecca.
I think I may have answered the wrong phone.
I think so.
We have the same, they're identical, really.
One second.
- What? - It's Rebecca.
Hey.
Hey, I just got a call from the Drug Squad.
They have a thing.
Can you meet me down at 38 Division? - Okay.
- Twenty minutes, think you can make that? I'll be there in ten.
Okay, bye.
Wow.
That wasn't awkward at all.
I gotta go.
Here it comes.
I really like this.
Whatever this is; yeah so do I.
You staying in my apartment.
I feel like you're my girlfriend, all over again.
But? We got a daughter to think about and we should Either tell her Or I should go back to being your ex-wife.
I'll see you later.
Her name is Dana Sarich.
She says she's the bookkeeper for Thomas Novak.
The drug dealer.
You know him, right, he's old school.
He's been at it for years, mostly cocaine.
He's done almost zero time.
He's smart, this guy.
We can't get close.
We know him.
- So this woman came to you? - She wants to make a deal.
She works at one of his bars.
Subana.
She launders cash.
Drug money.
Problem is, she hasn't got any paperwork.
And if I'm gonna get her immunity You need to back up her story with something solid.
That's where we come in.
We're gonna get into the club, make a buy, corroborate her story.
Otherwise, I'll have to say "no" to a deal and charge her.
That's Novak.
He owns the bar.
But I don't work for him, I report to Victor Casco.
- This guy? - He's like Novak's second in command.
How often do you see Novak, at the club? - All the time.
- And do you speak to him? Dana, we need to know everything about this guy.
I'm asking about your relationship with him, is it friendly? He likes me.
He's pretty intense.
I've managed to keep him at arm's length, but it hasn't been easy.
Novak has a history of violence.
Has he ever threatened you? Not directly.
But like I said, Novak's not a guy you say no to.
He's ruthless.
Dana, I need to ask you a question.
Why are you doing this in the first place? - Novak won't let me leave.
- You want him in prison.
Do you have kids? Yeah.
My son Jakob is seven.
I've made some bad choices.
And I need to fix it.
I want a new life.
Witness protection, somewhere far away, where Novak will never find us.
Okay, so tell us about the money.
Subana is a cash business.
It's full of kids spending money.
On a good night, the take will be twenty-five, thirty grand, in terms of legitimate business.
But what comes to me the next day It's often well over eighty.
Drug money.
Dana: I take a portion, and make it look like liquor sales.
So, inflated pricing, fake invoicing and inventories.
Security's tight.
They have cameras in the office.
They watch me work.
Everything I do.
What happens to the rest of the money? You said you launder a portion, what do you do with the rest? I count it, I package it.
Then, I wait for a courier to come and pick it up.
- A courier? Where does he take it? - I have no idea.
But I could guess.
Structured deposits, offshore accounts, shell companies.
Some of it must go to supplier, I mean, he has to buy the product.
But again, I have no actual knowledge of any of this, and I've No evidence.
I guess I'm naive.
I thought this would be more straight forward.
I was hoping I wouldn't have to see him.
Ever again.
We'll get there, Dana, alright? We'll work together.
Hey, we're gonna get this guy, Dana.
He's gonna pay for everything he's done.
So.
How is this gonna work? First step, we're gonna make a buy.
In order to build our case against Novak, we have to establish that drugs are for sale at the bar.
What kind and how much.
Here you go.
Thank you.
I'll put two of my people in.
They know what they're doing, won't take them long.
At the same time, I want a visual on Victor Casco, and, if possible, Novak.
Who they're with, what they're doing.
It's all part of building the case, backing up your story with evidence.
Excuse me Hi.
- Do you mind if I take a picture of you? - Okay? It's for my girlfriend, she's late, I wanna make her jealous.
Just There you go.
Hold on As for you, Dana.
What you're gonna do Is go back to work.
We'll set you up with a camera, so we can record your actions.
More hard evidence.
When you give the money to the courier, we'll be watching.
We're gonna follow him, see where he goes.
Three years, today.
He proposed to me right over there, by the water.
- Seriously? - Yeah Well, marry the girl already.
She's obviously head over heels for you.
Right? Hey, hey, we're young, we have our whole lives ahead of us.
So what do you recommend? Something to spice up the night.
I'll have someone send over a bottle of champagne.
On the house.
Actually, we were told you could do way better than that.
I'll see what I can find.
(Phone Rings) Order placed.
We'll see what comes back.
Check your two o'clock.
Thomas Novak in the flesh.
What's he doing? Must be trouble in paradise.
Courier's leaving.
He looks rattled.
Okay, he's coming up.
I got him.
Daniel: South side, he's on his way out.
Rebecca: Stay close, something's up.
This guy looks scared.
Daniel: Right here.
Storage locker.
Could be a depot for the money, maybe.
Maybe Novak just stores it here, keeps it off site.
Daniel: Later they come by, pick it up in bulk Move it offshore? Or it could just be a drop off point, stick it in one of these lockers.
Then the supplier comes by, takes the cash, leaves the product.
Look at this guy, can't get out of there fast enough.
So I guess we wait.
See who comes by to collect.
Happy Anniversary.
Have a good night, guys.
This should do the trick.
We got it.
- Dana - Khali, heads up.
Rebecca, Dana's with Novak.
She looks shakey.
Novak: I want you to come and see me later.
We go over the numbers.
It won't take long, I promise.
Dana, is there a problem? Dana: I'm good.
Whatever you need.
- Alright.
- Okay.
That could be our supplier.
- And there you go, same locker.
- Yeah, yeah Daniel: In goes the drugs, out comes the cash.
Daniel: Hey.
Whoa, whoa, we've got company.
John: Keep shooting.
(Gun Shots) Police! Stop! (Gun Shots) (Gun Shot) - You okay? - Yeah.
It's clear.
I just spoke with the Drug Squad.
Thomas Novak is having supply issues.
- No kidding.
- Here's what we know.
The shooter's with a Mexican cartel, Los Zetas, you can tell by the tats.
Los Zetas has a strangle-hold on the local trade, every dealer.
- Except Novak.
- You got it.
He won't do business with them.
Novak is stubborn as an ox.
No one's gonna tell him who he can source his drugs from.
He's bucking the monopoly.
This guy's unbelievable, he's psychotic.
So the shooting, Los Zetas was sending a message.
They're trying to force him to buy from them.
And Novak is not someone who responds well to ultimatums, to say the least.
Are you making this up? 'Cause all of the sudden you're an expert on this guy.
The timing is perfect.
We give him another option.
You're talking about Dana here, right? She's tired of counting the money, she's ready to make a move.
- And guess what, she has a connection.
- Oh, just like that, out of thin air? The bookkeeper comes up with a new supplier? Why not? She's connected to everyone.
Victor, the staff, all the way up to Novak.
He likes her, he trusts her.
We can use that.
She can introduce him to Daniel.
You're from Brazil, you're in town looking for business.
- You met Dana at Subana.
- And you're not afraid of Los Zetas.
You're willing to take the risk.
You're reckless, impulsive.
Just like Novak.
It's perfect.
Can I talk to you for a second? Well, that's a switch.
Okay, this isn't gonna work.
Dana won't pull it off.
She just needs to set up a meeting.
Los Zetas are targeting suppliers, they are killing them, Rebecca.
You wanna put Daniel in front of that? - It's our opportunity - Will you just Stop it.
You wanna tell me what's going on with Novak guy? Because you've not seeing straight, Rebecca.
I wanna get the bad guy, John, why is that news to you? You're pushing too hard.
What kind of a deal? We want you to introduce Novak to a new supplier.
In return, you'll get full immunity from all charges.
Witness protection for you and Jakob.
- I don't know anything about drugs.
- You don't have to.
He just needs to meet a new supplier.
You're gonna make the intros.
Daniel's gonna be the expert.
It's normally Victor who deals with that end.
It can't just be Victor, Dana, it has to be Novak, do you understand? Novak has to be there for the meet.
If you can't make that happen, there's no deal.
Where's Jakob right now? - He's staying at my sister's.
- You're gonna keep him there, alright? You really think I can do this? I'll be honest with you, Dana.
When I look at you and when I think about Jakob I think you could do just about anything.
We'll start with something small.
Drug Squad will get us some coke.
Something they picked up in another bust, something pure.
- So we're gonna get this back? - No chance.
You better make it worth my while then.
Rebecca: You give it to Victor.
Let him know you've found a possible new source.
- From Brazil? - That's what he says.
- Why didn't he come to me? - I didn't ask too many questions, Victor.
The opportunity presented itself and I jumped.
But Thomas has to be there, alright? He only wants to deal with him.
- Tell him to piss off.
- Just think about it, alright? If you're interested, let me know.
Dana the Accountant.
Look at you.
He's my contact.
Alright? I get the points.
I've been here long enough, I've been loyal, I'm ready for this.
Just talk to Thomas.
Please.
Rebecca: Then, Victor will test the product.
And if the Drug Squad's done its job It'll be some of the purest cocaine he's ever seen.
At which point Victor will call you, and ask you to set up a meeting with your Brazilian friend.
After that, it's all up to us.
Daniel: Just remember, you're gonna let me lead, let me push, okay? Hey We got this, alright? - Thomas Novak? - You said Thomas would be here, Victor.
Ah, Mr.
Novak's busy.
You deal with me.
I think there's been some misunderstanding.
Thanks for your time.
Have a nice day.
- Really? - Just keep walking.
Thomas: Just like that? You're not even going to introduce yourself? We're going to do business and we don't know each other's names? - Daniel Agre.
- Thomas Novak.
It's a pleasure to meet you.
(In Portuguese) The pleasure is all mine.
(In Portuguese) Daniel: I've heard a lot about you, Mr.
Novak.
- Dana speaks very highly of you.
- Does she? Dana is an outstanding judge of character.
Daniel, please, join me.
Thomas: It's a beautiful product.
Very impressive.
Daniel: Whatever you need.
It's no problem.
- We take good care of our clients.
- Oh, I bet you do.
Thomas: So I'll tell you what, ask your people to get in touch.
And we'll take the conversation from there.
"My people?" You didn't think I would deal with you directly, did you? Are we going to play this game again, Mr.
Novak? Do I need to walk away? Hey! Sit down.
What's happening? - Rebecca: Jesse? - Jesse: Daniel looks ready to bolt.
Jesse: It's cool, he's sitting back down.
Mr.
Novak, I'm a business man.
I take that seriously.
If you want to work together, that's great.
But if you're looking for me to play games here, for me to engage in a little foreplay with you Then you're rubbing up the wrong leg.
You know my name, and you have a sample of my product.
So either you're in or you're out.
Remind me, Dana.
How did you meet this young man? - What do you mean? - I mean, the circumstances.
Thomas: Tell me the story.
Come on, Dana Daniel's been coming into the bar, on and off for the last couple of months.
I overheard him talking, so I asked around.
I thought he seemed like someone you'd want to do business with, Thomas.
So I took some initiative.
You have a very loyal employee working for you, Mr.
Novak.
He likes you, Dana.
But then who can blame him? I hope you understand that I can't commit to anything in the first meeting.
Dana has my number.
You can call me when you've made your decision.
Thanks for the drink.
What do you think? He didn't buy.
I think he's on the hook.
I think we're going to get this guy.
Khali: There you are.
I got your message.
What are you doing? These are all the Drug Squad files on Thomas Novak.
Going back two decades.
We got surveillance, wiretaps, and arrest records.
Rebecca's obsessed with this guy, and I wanna know why.
You're going behind her back? I'm just worried about her, that's all.
Okay? - Novak was charged with murder.
- Really? A guy named Jack West.
Anyway, didn't stick, Novak walked.
Look at that.
Bet you never saw one of these before.
- It's called a VHS.
- Oh, that's funny.
- What's on it? - John: Gonna find out.
- Khali: Is that Novak? - John: Yeah, twenty-three years ago.
- Thomas: Admit it, you've got nothing.
- Detective: Doesn't mean you didn't do it.
It means you can't prove it, my friend.
Otherwise you would've charged me by now.
Just a second, turn that off.
The guy that Novak killed.
Jack West.
He was a cop.
Look, his number, right here, John.
John, he was undercover.
Rebecca: Rebecca Ellis.
I have news.
I've had calls from two of my CI's.
Somebody’s been calling around about the Brazilians.
- Your guy Daniel made an impression.
- Novak? Could be, yeah.
Could also be Los Zetas.
We'll find out soon enough.
Yes, we will.
Thanks, Kurt.
You bet.
Khali: I've got it.
Jack West was an undercover name, like we thought.
What was his real name? Khali: You're not going to like this.
Jack Ellis.
One daughter.
Rebecca.
Khali: She was 16 when he died.
No wonder she's obsessed.
She's chasing the guy that killed her father.
Rebecca, Novak called.
We're on.
- Eyes are up.
We're good.
- Khali: How's the audio? - Say it again? - How's the audio? It's good.
Get out of there.
Okay, so I can see most of this room from that camera.
The bedroom and bathroom are audio only.
So the deal needs to be made here.
You got it.
We'll be right next door.
Eat 'em up.
Okay, Dana, just like at the club, okay? You're gonna let me steer the conversation.
We give him the drugs, he gives us the money.
We walk out, he gets arrested.
And you and Jakob get to start your new life together.
Okay.
Thank you.
How's he doing? Did you talk with him? About an hour ago.
He's with my sister.
Good.
Everything is gonna be fine.
Just like you're going to work.
Just a normal day, you stay relaxed.
Everything will work out smoothly.
- Anything? - Jesse: Entrance is clean.
No sign of anybody watching the place.
- The moment you see Novak's car - You got it.
Rebecca: Hey, keep an eye out for muscle.
Chances are he's not gonna come alone.
When were you gonna tell me about this? This isn't about me, or my father.
It's about arresting Novak.
I said I didn't want to do this, and you bulldoze right over me.
And I was right.
Here we are about to take Novak down.
Rebecca, I'm just concerned about your judgment on this.
Here's what I need, John.
I need you to back off.
And let me do my job.
Novak just pulled up.
Alright, we're ready.
He's not getting out, he's just sitting there.
Why, what's he doing? (Phone rings) It's him.
- Hello.
- Change of plan.
I'll meet you at the club.
Both of you.
Oh, really? You sure you don't wanna come up and see the view? Thomas: I insist.
Unless it's a problem, for some reason? Daniel: Of course not.
We can see you at the club.
It's a wrinkle, that's it.
We keep going.
It means he's suspicious.
What if he's made Daniel? - He hasn't.
- And you know that, how? This is classic anti-surveillance, John.
You bail at the last second, change the location, put the meeting on your turf.
Daniel: Yeah, she's right.
John: "She's right?" I still don't trust it.
Novak knows what he's doing, and so do we.
We'll roll with it.
Go ahead, say it.
Okay, are you doing this because it's a good idea, or because you hate Novak so much you're willing to take any risk? Wait, what is that supposed to mean? Twenty-two years ago, Novak killed my father.
What? His name was Jack Ellis.
He was an undercover cop.
Novak walked.
And now, Rebecca has a chance to put him away.
It's your call.
If you don't think this will work If you think it's too risky, we can call it.
Let's do it.
I've got a tricked out phone.
We'll record it all on that.
OK.
The minute this feels off, I want you out of there.
- Understand me? - Yeah, I got it.
- Are you kidding? - It's just a formality.
Phone off.
Battery out.
Okay? Thomas: You understand.
It pays to be cautious.
Daniel: Of course.
Now, Mr.
Novak I need you to be quiet now, Daniel.
I just have a few questions for Dana.
Thomas: How long have we worked together, Dana? Six years.
What is it, what's wrong? Well, in all that time, how many times have you asked about the details of the business? I guess my question is Since when do you take initiative? Thomas: Why have you brought this man to me? Are you about to break my heart? Is that what's happening here? I've been counting your money for six years.
At some point, I realized that if I want a life, a better life for Jakob, I had to want more.
So now I do.
Daniel, have you met Dana's little boy? - Am I missing something here? - His name's Jakob.
There here is.
(Laughing) He loves to spend time at his aunt's place, doesn't he? That's your sister's.
What are you doing? He's got the kid.
See, I'm a careful man, Daniel.
And I always take insurance.
Mr.
Novak, none of this is even necessary.
For all I know, you two are planning something, you're gonna rob me blind and run off together.
Where is he, Thomas? Where is Jakob? - What have you done? - I've done nothing, Dana.
But I will, if I find out that you are screwing me.
So, I'm gonna keep Jakob for a while.
Just to be sure.
The truth is I've always wanted a son.
Now, let's take a look at that product of yours, Daniel, shall we? - You said this would work! - Dana.
How did this happen? They attacked my sister, they tied her up.
- I know.
- He took my son! (Crying) You don't know Thomas.
He'll kill Jakob if he suspects anything at all.
Even if he doesn't, he'll kill him.
We're gonna find him, Dana.
We will, we'll find him.
- What if he's already dead? - They have no reason to do that.
Sooner or later They're gonna realize that Daniel's a cop.
What happens to Jakob then? He's the only good thing that I've got.
John: Okay, my name is Thomas Novak, I've been a drug dealer for twenty years, and I'm an expert at keeping my hands clean.
Yeah, but you don't do this yourself.
So you gotta send someone else to scoop up the kid.
Someone you trust.
Jesse: Victor? That fits.
He wasn't there for the meet, he wasn't at the bar.
OK, you find out where he lives.
Properties, vehicles, everything, okay? Let's go.
This guy's not gonna make it easy.
(Knock On Glass) Mr.
Novak, my name is Rebecca.
Detective Sergeant Rebecca Ellis.
I'm really sorry to bother you.
I just have a couple of questions, part of an investigation.
What kind of investigation? It has to do with your club, Subana.
We think some of your employees have been serving minors at the bar.
We've got a big push on.
I was hoping you might come in, give a statement.
And what if I say no? You could, I'm not gonna charge you.
I just figured you might wanna help out.
Maintain a good relationship with the police Couple questions, won't take long.
In here.
John: Rebecca.
- It can wait.
- I don't think so.
What's he doing here? You were right.
I shouldn't have pushed, this is on me.
What are you thinking? You're gonna ask him politely, "Where's the kid?" I don't have any options right now John, this is what I've got.
Maybe it'll give you time to find Jakob.
No one's gonna hurt him without a direct order from Novak.
Alright.
You keep him busy.
We'll find the kid.
And then we'll put Novak away, okay? I don't think you're being entirely honest with me, Rebecca.
We're concerned about one of your employees.
- Dana Sarich.
- Why? Her son Jakob has gone missing.
That's terrible.
I've met Jakob a few times.
He's a wonderful kid.
I haven't heard about any of this on the news.
- Did Dana bring this to you? - Rebecca: Her sister.
Jakob was with her when he was taken.
Thomas: It's horrible.
I mean, I wish there was something I could do to help.
You don't know who could have taken him? Or where he might be? No, I have no idea.
Why would you think I might? Daniel.
Anything? We're at Victor's condo.
The uniforms are upstairs searching.
His car is gone, there's no sign of Jakob.
- Okay, keep looking.
- Daniel: Okay.
Rebecca Ellis.
I knew a cop named Jack Ellis, years ago.
Yeah, and he told me that he had a daughter Now, she'd be about your age by now.
He was my father.
Hmm Daniel.
You know, he taught me some important lessons, Jack.
About how much you can trust people and What you need to do to protect yourself.
It's Jakob's.
He had it in the photo.
They put him in a car.
He must have dropped it.
How is your father? Is he still alive? - Get up.
- OK Thomas: Are you charging me with something? Not yet.
What are you doing? I'm thinking the rooftop.
Let's do it.
Novak: I don't know what you think you're doing here Shut up.
Keeping moving.
Stand over there.
Further.
That's it! - What exactly are we doing, Rebecca? - Shut up! Maybe I should just push him right over.
Watch him fall.
You think he'd scream? So you know what happens next, right, Thomas? This is where you tell me where Jakob is.
Or what, you're gonna shoot me? Is that it? I told you.
I don't know.
- What are we doing here, Rebecca? - That's an excellent question, Rebecca.
Are you with me? Yeah.
I'm with you.
You're bluffing, you're not gonna shoot me.
I don't need to.
You're about to have a terrible fall.
Rebecca, look, I'm still in handcuffs, how is that gonna look? He's right, we should take off the handcuffs.
Why? He was wearing them when he tried to escape.
- John: And he ran up on to the roof.
- Trying to get away.
I told you.
- I don't know where Jakob is.
- This isn't about Jakob.
This is about you paying for what you did.
To me.
To my mother.
You took my father away from me.
Ripped him out of my life.
And I still feel it.
Every day.
Every day.
That's what this is about.
I've waited twenty-two years for this moment.
And now it's here.
Are you ready? Please stop.
Stop, stop, stop.
He's at the motel, at 78 Blue Inn Road.
Victor has him there.
John: Rebecca.
Not one scratch.
Not even a hair out of place.
You understand? - Vanessa: Hello.
- Hey.
Where are you, are you in the car? Ah, no.
I'm still at work.
- Are you kidding me? - No, I'm not kidding you.
It's just gonna be a couple more hours, so maybe you should just go to sleep.
In your apartment? No, I don't think so.
I'm going home.
Okay.
Uhm Vee, it's just very important, okay? I'm sorry.
Can I tell you something? I have not missed these phone calls, not even a little.
Yeah well, me neither.
You suck.
Yeah, I know.
I'll call you tomorrow.
Okay.
Bye.
John: Hey.
You want some company? No, I'm good.
You should go home.
Now you're talking.
Dana and Jakob are on a plane.
Somewhere West.
Headed for their new life.
Good.
You did good by them.
- You think? - Yeah.
Drug Squad are happy.
And they got enough evidence to put Novak away.
I wouldn't have done it.
Up on the roof.
No? Much as I wanted to.
I wouldn't have done it.
You sure? What would Jack Ellis have thought? About what you did up there.
I don't know.
I'll never know.
Yeah.
