[announcer] We've got Valiente
taking on La Fe.
As always, Valiente is one of
the favorites here to win the U.S. Open.
La Fe is definitely
gonna have their hands full today,
going up against the GOAT,
Adolfo Cambiaso.
La Fe is a very young organization.
They've only been playing together
for a few years.
[Robi] Where the fuck is Louis?
[music fades]
[in Spanish] If Cambiaso is standing back,
let's have a bit of patience to attack.
[in Spanish] Okay.
Notice that from
where we started having it,

which was for me to be more
of an offensive force
when we recouped the ball.

Devaleix, Louis is going to get there.

he's a little overwhelmed and nervous.
He's, like, trying to kill the ball.
He just needs to keep his calm.
[tense music continues]

Our team's strategy was short-lived
when it goes back to fucking Cambiaso.

he knows exactly what we're gonna do

[Adolfo] He comes to me,
but many times he goes to a pass.

This season is different
than it has been in the past.
I'm not playing at all,
but I can go watch polo.
If I were me circa five years ago,
I wouldn't have time
to be here doing this, supporting him.

I mean, like, not managing a house.
[Pamela] Of course. But it's
very difficult not working like I was,
not playing like I was playing,
and having those two elements
kind of taken out of my life
because now I feel very stagnant,
and I'm not a person
who enjoys a stagnant lifestyle.
- What brings me joy is the hustle.

[Pamela] I am a polo player
and an attorney in Chicago
at a law firm there and working remotely.
Because I'm pregnant
with a baby girl, everything else
kind of just became second priority.
I'm happy to be the sweet pregnant wife
supporting her husband
for a period of time,
but that is not who I've been
or what I have strived for.
So
[tense music playing]
[announcer] Both teams line back up

[Louis] We had one strategy going into it.
We started getting killed
and didn't pivot to another strategy.

[Louis] I mean, I get it,
losing against a good team,
but not getting killed
the way we just got fucking killed.
[indistinct chatter]
[horse snorting]
[Louis] How do I feel
about our performance? Um

Uh highly disappointed.

It's not possible that we keep losing.

we knew we had to win
the next game, otherwise we're out.

I went to the barn, got on three horses,
and hit penalty shots
and went stick and balling.
I'm super, super disappointed.
We can't play like that.
We have the best chemistry off the field,
but it's just not working.
I wanna blow the fucking team up.

[Louis] We shouldn't have changed
the strategy. We played better last time.
I mean, you're playing against Cambiaso.

Being a father is the best thing
that can happen.
I've been blessed with Ames.
Getting that call,
I was sad for my kid.
Sad that he's probably scared
he got pulled in that day
to the principal's office.
And you apologize to everybody.

We fucking lost and my kid's misbehaving.
A little bit disappointed in myself.
I have spent a lot of time away
from my son during the U.S. Open.
If I made him
my number one priority this season,
maybe this is something
he would not have done.

I'm starting to think about whether
it's worth it. You know?

from the U.S. Open, I will go fishing.
Teams with chemistry, you feel like
you're with your friends playing
or having fun with your friends
all day long, playing in Coca-Cola.
We did it at a moment,
then Negro went down,
and Negro's thing was tough, I think.
It was really tough.
So, I mean, everything changes.
So, it is a strange season, you know.
Fishing requires a lot of patience
and it's the only thing
I have patience for, it's fishing, so.
[dramatic music playing]
[Keko] I play polo for a living.
Since I remember,
I was really good friends
with Poroto Cambiaso.
We played together
since probably we were six or seven
until we were 14 for sure.
Won a couple
of very, uh, impressive tournaments.
Eighteen, yeah?
And he's already a six-goal player.
[Keko] Two years ago, I was lucky to play
with Poroto and his dad.
With Poroto, it's amazing.
I mean, he's my age.
I don't know, from a year to another,
he made a huge jump. It's unreal.
[Toby] As good as he is,
as young as he is, I'm wondering
if he doesn't put
added pressure on himself
to try to live up to Poroto too,
his friend, his buddy, you know?
Poroto's not really a fair comparison
because he's a freak of nature.
[groans]
- When do you play? Against?
- I don't know yet. With La Dolfina.
Oh. Tough team, yeah. They play amazing.
You always try to push yourself the most,
but you see yourself compared to the guys,
like Poroto, that are on the top now.
You're not far in a way, but really far
on some other ones, you know?
Those guys are improving every day
and they have a lot of help
with organization and everything.
So, I hope to be there.
I mean, I work for it every day.
It's what I dream,
but it's not really easy.
[dramatic music playing]
[Keko] I really want to win
this competition.
I mean, to be 18, playing the U.S. Open,
and a team like Coca-Cola,
it's amazing. Really important for me.
Poroto is my friend
and I always respect him,
but to win, I need to beat La Dolfina.
In order to win this tournament,
I have to go through my friend, Poroto.
[upbeat music playing]
[Poroto] When I was born,
I was like a little bean.
That's why I'm Poroto. [laughs]
When I was really, really young,
I knew I was going to be a polo player,
and I had the best teacher.
It's not easy to be Poroto
because he had to deal with all the stress
of being Adolfo's son.
The question was
if he was going to be able
to be as good as his father.
Adolfo Cambiaso was the youngest player
to ever go to 10 goals at age 19.
Then his son comes along
and beat his dad's record right there
to be the youngest player
to ever achieve a 10-goal handicap.
One week after his 17th birthday.
That's mind-boggling.
[Nacho] This is Poroto's
18-year-old version of himself.
It's a better version
than Adolfo's 18-year-old version,
which was at the time
beyond everybody's beliefs
what he could do
with the ball and his speed,
but in terms of gameplay,
Poroto is even better than his father.
- [man] Are you the youngest 10-goaler?
- Yeah.
- In history? Can you tell me that?
- Mm.
[chuckles]
I don't like to tell that.
Poroto is today top three,
four players in the world, I think.
He's a kid,
but inside the field, you don't feel it.
[music continues]
I mean,
that fucking kid Poroto is unbelievable.
It's just unbelievable.
And Panelo is unbelievable.
La Dolfina and the youth on that team,
uh, you know, it's amazing.
[Toby] La Dolfina team is Poroto Cambiaso
and Tommy Panelo and Rufino Merlos.
And then of course Alejandro Aznar.
With the exception of Aznar,
I don't know if any of them can buy beer.
[dramatic music playing]
[Tony] In this generation,
the speed, it's a whole different game.
Yes, there was passing before,
but the passing now
is just a whole nother level.
[Toby] They are so in tune
with each other. They're not talking.
They're not calling. They just know.
[Poroto] I won the U.S. Open
once with my dad.
It was a really important moment for me.
It's a good opportunity to win
the most important tournament in America
without my dad.

Poroto won the Gold Cup.
[Tony] What really is special
about La Dolfina and Valiente
is that both those teams were
in our two finals leading up to the Open.

Both teams are looking for a way

Coke managed to claw their way back,
and then Keko picks up
his second yellow card,
forcing his team to play a man down.
[Keko] It's a lot of emotions,
and you're really high up
and so much intensity
and everything that it's hard
for nothing to happen, you know?

by Panelo.
Breaks a tie, takes back the lead
to make the score 11-10.
Coke's got some work to do right here.
[announcer 2] Keko will be sitting
the remainder of this chukker,
and I believe 26 seconds
of the sixth chukker as well.

going into chukker number six.
Now we need to really just
make our comeback, like, big,
so we can have a good day.

These young guns are changing the game
right before our very eyes.
[Keko] Many times the games
get decided on the last five minutes,
and you cannot relax for a second.

[Polito] Keko is very young. Uh
He needs to work
to play more with the men
and not too much with the ball.
I think the young kids nowadays,
they see Poroto Cambiaso,
and I think it's not good for polo.
Because they are something different.
It's not going to help their polo.
[Toby] Keko is a fantastic handler
of the ball.
He's the guy that you want
normally to have the ball on your team
to go to goal,
unless you have
Polito Pieres on your team.
You can hold him up against Poroto,
Adolfo, against any other player.
He's right there with them in those terms.
So I think it's very difficult for Keko
to find his place really on that team.
[horse snorting]
[announcer 1] With that win, La Dolfina
will move to the top of the standings
while Coca-Cola sinks to an 0-2 record.
[in Spanish] It's a game that must be won.
They were playing for everything.

It was a difficult game for us.
I think we were a bit nervous,
especially me.
But, in the last chukker, I forgot
all the things that I was thinking,
and we all played good as a team,
and I think that's why we won.
[Bob] Poroto, he's the future.
You're against him,
but you're happy for him.
- I've been with him since he
- Since he was little.
- He's like my son.

[Poroto] Valiente and La Dolfina
are different teams,
but they're the same organization.

Poroto's been playing a lot
of Bob's horses through all his career.
Everything we do is together.
[Toby] Adolfo and Poroto,
these sister organizations,
they both have won a tournament.
They want to play each other, and I'm sure
they want to do it in the finals,
but in order to do that, they have to play
well enough to get to the semifinals
to have a chance
to play against each other.
That's not guaranteed at this point
because we've got a lot of good teams.
[Poroto] I want to win against my dad
so I can say that I beat
the greatest of the sport.
[Keko] I felt the things were not going
really good my way.
I was just probably mad at myself
more than anything.
I played not good.
[dramatic music playing]
I think now it's more stressful
because of the future.
These players really
have to work hard to make a living.
They're bouncing around and they're always
trying to stay competitive,
trying to increase their skill
as to whether or not
they'll be picked up by a team.
So, if you have a bad year,
it can have
a detrimental effect on your career.
There's a lot of competition.
Everybody is fighting for themselves
to get a job, to improve.
It's a tough sport.
[upbeat music playing]

My boyfriend's on his way.
So you have to come tonight.
During the winter season,
Wellington is really fun.
And there's always
something to do with your friends.

It's his life,
it's his career, it's everything.
Mentally, you need a way to de-stress.
I try to, like, help him go out
and, like, not think about polo
for, like, an hour or two hours.

How do you guys stay friends
when you compete with each other?

Keko definitely has a large friend group.

the most important tournament in the U.S.
that he plays, so it's intense.
I can see him relax,
have fun with his friends,
and have fun with me and my friends.
It's really nice for him.
But a night out in Wellington
is pretty short-lived.
It's very in-the-moment fun,
but then right back to work
for Keko the next day.
[birds chirping]

[Louis] Yeah, we're gonna go
pick up Yaya and Papu.
Pam's father can't sit in a car
for a long, extended period of time.
He's 86 years old
and had really serious cancer.
[Ames] Have you ever been
on a helicopter like that?
[Louis] Yes.
I've been watching Pam struggle
with the thought of not seeing her dad.
And it's a killer.
[soft music playing]
My dad and I are super close.
We have been my whole life.
My parents have come
to a few matches over the years,
and they always enjoy their time here.
But because of his health,
my dad hasn't been able to attend lately.
So it's really amazing
to get my dad out and get him
socializing with people I love.
Look at that.
That's where we're gonna play later today.
How cool is that?

I lost my dad
and still to this day, it's tough for me.
So I just felt it was nice for Pam
to be able to watch a Sunday game
with her father, um, and her mother.
