Pretty Hard Cases (2021) s03e08 Episode Script

Badge Bitch Party

After we received your sample,
our lab conducted an
in-depth analysis of the drug
that you're calling "Purple Rain."
So we're likely looking for someone
with specialized chemistry knowledge.
I imagine at the very least
they have a Master's degree,
but probably a PhD.
I first heard about Purple
Rain at a house party in Guelph.
Michel Owens?
He's got a PhD in chemistry,
has access to the lab.
Guelph Tech.
Okay, here's what I'm thinking.
We take a road trip out to Guelph,
bump the guy, see what we find.
Yeah, I'm looking for Michel Owens,
the lab manager for the
Chemistry Department?
The last time he signed into the
lab was two nights ago at midnight.
I'm not making drugs.
I'm not selling drugs.
- Have you talked to Tuesday?
- Who's Tuesday?
The janitor I just had
fired after I caught them
after hours working late cooking
shit up in my lab and lying about it.
Did Krish put you up to all this?
I didn't make Purple Rain
with the intention of dealing.
I was just trying to help people.
Were you trying to help the
people who overdosed and died?
Selfish. That's what my mother
told me every night of my life.
Well, the nights that she was
there, which was barely ever.
- Jenn can be a bit possessive.
- She doesn't want to meet me?
She
doesn't want to meet you. I'm sorry.
Sam, you're home?
Ro!
Keep your eye on the GPS, I
need to turn around at 2.5,
- I cannot be late for work today.
- Me neither.
Rumour is Goldstein
is retiring next month,
means they'll be looking
for a new partner.
This time, I'm not
gonna let it get away.
Nice. Yes!
I was sensitivity-trained
twice a week, check.
Gone to every conference, check.
Taken every file they've offered, check.
Been mentoring this
hot, young junior, check.
- Uh
- Okay, 2.5, let's turn around.
Okay, so who's this hot young junior?
Jay Burden, new hire.
Clerked at the supreme court, "whatevs".
- Smart or entitled?
- She's pretty smart, actually.
Oh, right. Cool. Jay's
a she, that's nice.
Yeah, she is.
Jay-na. She goes by Jay.
Well, some people call
her Jay. I do, sometimes.
How excellent of you to
spend your time mentoring
a young, female, hot junior lawyer.
- Please don't be weird
- Don't you be weird.
She's a very talented lawyer.
She's a colleague
rising through the ranks.
I've taken her under my wing.
Oh, the old proverbial wing snuggle.
- Sam.
- What?
Are you serious here? I
thought we were past all this,
but if we're not, I will
cease and desist all mentoring.
Oh, listen, stop. You
do you, make partner
and then we're gonna celebrate
in Greece, okay? So
Listen, I don't have
time for petty jealousies.
I'm gonna be late for work.
- Move it, slowpoke.
- Ow.
Come on, slowpoke.
Okay, okay. I'm coming, I'm coming.
We should have been there an hour ago.
- What is taking you so long?
- Well, what's the rush?
- I'm eager to get there.
- Okay.
- Oh, you're still home
- Adriana.
- Hey.
- What are you doing here?
Oh, my internet's down. I've
got a few big Zoom meetings,
so I was hoping I could hunker down
while you guys are at work.
- Mm-hmm.
- Oh.
And I am okay with that. Here's a key.
- Thank you.
- Nice to see you.
I am too, but I feel bad,
I'm going to work and
you're just getting here.
We can hang out later.
Okay.
And bring my niece next time.
Bye, you two.
Okay.
So, do you really think we got
all the Purple Rain off the street?
I don't know about that.
I mean, Tuesday seemed to
be the only one making it.
And if they're off the
street, my feeling
Purple Rain will dry up pretty soon.
Wow, right? Oh my gosh.
That deserves a really
big pat on the back.
- Turn around, there we go.
- Thank you.
- Bang, bang, bang.
- Turn around.
- Yeah?
- Yeah.
Oh, a bit of a takedown party maybe.
I don't mean to brag, but I
can bench-press my own weight.
I could probably bench-press you.
I've also recently become a vegan.
Oh, wow. That is really
impressive, Watts.
Oh, man! There you guys
are. I have been looking
- I gotta talk to these gals.
- Oh, sure.
Sorry. So, I'll Nice talking to you.
- Yeah. Okay. See you.
- Mm-hmm.
I got a ride in to work
with him this morning
and he has not stopped talking.
He's super sweet, but I'm pretty
sure he was working up the nerve
to ask me out and I
was not looking forward
to that super awkward rejection.
Anyway, phew, dodged
a bullet with that one.
Not that there's
anything wrong with Watts.
I just don't like mixing
"bizz" with "plesh",
except, of course, with you guys.
Oh, looking forward
to that "partay" ton
Anyways, I'll see you guys later.
Now, what was that?
What did you just say?
I don't know. Okay. Yeah.
- What'd you just say? What's she talking about?
- What?
What "partay" is she talking about?
Let me think about it.
Oh, right, I have no clue.
You know what? It's probably
just a figure of speech.
You know, that's exactly what it is.
Ooh, got it, I know what it
is. It is a takedown party,
- that is what it is.
- Why do you sound like a robot?
- Why are you talking like a
- Why was Nathan acting weird?
And why was Adriana at
my loft this morning?
- Who knows!
- Hold up, are y'all trying
to throw me an engagement party?
I feel like this is what's happening.
If there's a secret, I
know nothing about it
Emergency announcement
meeting in the boardroom. Now.
Doesn't put me in much
of a mood for a party,
I'll tell you that.
You told Gloria about the party?
What party? I have no idea.
- Watts.
- Yeah?
- Close the door.
- Yes, Mom Ma'am!
Oh, my
Okay, um I just got off
the phone with the Crown.
Tuesday's defence team
has found out the identity
of our primary confidential
informant, Jake Mardy.
And they have informed the
Crown that they will be calling
Jake to testify, their position being
he made have fed us false information
and may in fact be the mastermind
behind this whole Purple Rain business.
- That's obviously not true.
- That's their position.
But if we expose him
as a police informant,
he's gonna have a target on his back.
We don't know who Krish's
connections are, it could be anyone.
I am aware, which is why we
need to convince Jake Mardy
to testify for the Crown.
He won't come out publicly as a snitch.
Then I won't be able to go upstairs
and convince them to sign off
on the costly expense of putting
him in witness protection.
He'll be on his own.
How'd they find out he's our CI?
I don't know, but Tuesday's lawyer
is with Goldstein,
Jacob, Field and Wells.
That's Steve's firm.
Oh
Nathan, Naz, I need
you to find Jake Mardy.
Convince him to testify.
And if he agrees,
we'll get him into a
safe house right away.
Come on, guys. You know
better than to show up here.
Things have taken a turn.
Oh, of course they have. What's up?
Somehow, the defence has found out
you've been informing for the police.
They're planning on
calling you to the stand
- and making you testify.
- Okay, wait. What?
Is this a joke? Is this
like some sort of sick prank
to get me back for calling you Knee Job?
- Because it isn't funny.
- I'm afraid it's not a joke.
Man, I knew this would happen!
Oh my God, I am such an
idiot for trusting you!
Listen, Jake, you can be
mad at me. That's fine.
I'll take that. But this
is serious, all right?
We want you to testify
for our side instead.
I'm not testifying for anyone!
If it comes out that
I'm a rat, I am dead.
I know this is not what you want,
but this is the reality of
the situation we're in now.
The smartest thing to do is for
you to testify for the Crown,
that way we can protect you,
set you up somewhere safe.
You're talking about
witness protection, right?
What kind of life is that, man?
What kind of a life is it if you don't?
I know Krish is in prison
right now, but he's got money.
And if he's really trying
to be a player out here,
he's gonna make an example out of you.
Yeah. Yeah. Obviously.
And he's like, this
angry, spiteful bastard.
And he's making even
bigger connections and
- With who?
- No. No. I'm done talking, man.
Listen, Jake. Come on, man.
You don't want this life
anymore anyway, right?
Think of this as an
opportunity. A fresh start.
What about my girlfriend?
What about Yolanda?
You're still talking to her? Really?
We can have her come with you.
Look, we'll figure that
out later. Right now,
we need to keep you safe.
Maybe I'll just, uh
I just need to think this through, okay?
So just give me like a
couple of hours and, um
Yeah. I'll get back to you,
okay? We'll figure it out.
Yeah.
Yeah. We'll figure it out.
- Jake
- You gotta trust me, okay? I'll call you later.
He's going to agree, right?
I don't think he has a choice.
Hello. Oh, you wanted to talk to me.
I'm just gonna sit. I was standing,
but now I'm gonna sit.
Here I am, I just sat.
Do you like gossiping, Wazowski?
Uh no.
I mean, did you know
that gossiping serves
as a really important
function in society?
It's like, connect
No, I don't. It's harmful.
So you don't like bringing
home juicy little tidbits
to share with the hubby?
You know, impress him
with your "badassery",
chatting about Purple Rain?
Uh, no, when I go home, I like
to play a game called Wordle.
- And I don't really like to talk.
- So no speaking in code?
No referring to Pluie Mauve,
anything like that?
No coy little messages
that might make your husband want
to search amongst your things.
No, I did not talk to
Steve about this case.
Do you know this Jayna Burden woman?
Is she the lawyer on this case?
- Yes, she is.
- All right then.
She's a junior lawyer. I heard
that she's kind of annoying
Oh, that's interesting. I thought
you didn't talk about work.
I don't talk about my work to Steve,
he talks about his work all the time.
Listen, I understand that
this is very coincidental,
but normally, when a CI's
identity is compromised,
it comes back on the CI
themselves for acting strangely,
blabbing too much.
- That's possible.
- If I find out anything
about this case I'm gonna
come to you directly,
otherwise, I am going back to
my team, thank you very much.
I, uh, suppose I'll see you
tonight at this little um
shindig?
A lot of gossiping there, I'm sure.
Not from me.
Good.
Steve, you better pick up right now.
I'm sorry to pull you away
from your precious Jayna Burden,
sorry to burden you with
all these phone calls,
I am so mad at you right now.
I am so hurt by you right
Hey.
- Did you tell Steve about Jake?
- No!
Not intentionally, but
he knows all my passwords.
And he's Mister Ambitious
and Mister Determined
at work right now, so
The lawyer's name's Jayna Burden.
He told me this morning that
he's taken her under his wing.
Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy.
All right, you trust him?
I do.
But I did before and
he cheated on me, so.
Maybe I shouldn't.
Okay, so, you all need to see this.
It just came in.
So yeah, I lied about everything.
I thought it'd be funny
screwin' with the cops.
But it's not true
because I'm the one who made the drugs.
I'm the one who figured
out how to sell it online,
in person, all of it.
Krish, that Tuesday person.
They had nothing to do with it.
This was all me. It's all on me.
He's lying. We have full evidence
against Krish and Tuesday.
Everything he's saying
is is nonsense.
It doesn't matter. He sent
this video to everyone,
to the Crown, to the
defence, to the media.
Now, nothing he has ever
told us is gonna be credible.
The Crown's withdrawing the charges.
Krish and Tuesday are going
to be released later today.
- What?!
- Are you kidding me?
We're letting guilty
people out onto the street?
Dealers selling drugs
that are killing people.
We have the evidence.
We know that Tuesday's
been making the drugs.
- They admitted it.
- Well, they're singing a different story now.
Their lawyer's pleading
coercion, intimidation, fear.
We found Purple Rain in Tuesday's barn.
And the defence are gonna say
that the barn was abandoned,
that Jake is now claiming
that he is the ring leader
and he was probably
storing his product there.
Oh, come on. Jake is not
running this operation.
Somebody made him do this.
Clearly somebody very dangerous.
I mean, why would he suddenly
just change his mind like this?
I don't know. But whatever the reason,
Jake has just poked a million
holes in the Crown's case.
They know they can't
win. The case is dead.
Okay, well, we gotta find him.
You need to stay away
from him. Do you hear me?
We have a BOLO out on
him, we will bring him in,
but listen to me, Naz.
You are not to go anywhere near him.
- You are too personally involved in this already.
- Yeah.
Okay, let's just let
this rest for today,
come back fresh tomorrow
and we'll figure out
our next moves then.
Okay?
Except you, Greene. You're
the lead detective on this,
you need to go over your notes,
make sure they're in order.
There's gonna be a lot
of eyeballs on this case
trying to figure out
where we screwed up.
So yeah, I lied about everything.
I thought it'd be funny
screwing with the cops.
But it's not true because I'm
the one who made the dru
Do you know where he is right now?
Any ideas where he could be?
You know, I always knew
that Steve was an asshole.
Self-absorbed, entitled,
able to charm his way out of anything.
We don't know that it's Steve.
Okay?
So let's find Jake and find out
Hey.
Don't go near him.
Okay? Just stay away from him.
Come on, Naz. This isn't Sam's fault.
Naz! Okay, okay. He didn't mean that.
All right, look. Let's just focus
on who might have intimidated
- Jake, okay?
- Yup. Okay.
Um
It's not Krish, it's not Tuesday,
because they're still in custody.
- Yeah, they still are.
- Yeah.
And it's gonna take a few
more hours for that paperwork
to go through.
Monday, Tuesday. Have a seat.
- Thanks for coming down.
- It wasn't posed as a choice.
We just want to talk to
you before you get released.
That all right?
Well, that's still a few
hours away, so until then,
- I don't have a say.
- Um you must be feeling
- pretty lucky, huh?
- No. Not really.
I was kind of hoping to hide
away in prison, to be honest.
Uh, poor you, a drug dealer
who should be put away for years
- and their case gets randomly tossed
- You know,
there's no such thing as a free lunch.
So it's not free in here, but
it's not gonna be free out there.
All right, so talk to us then.
Maybe we can help
if you tell us who you're working for.
No. Save your breath. I will
never co-operate with cops.
- Ever.
- Who are you afraid of, hm?
Is it someone in the Replicants?
The Replicants?
I wish. Yeah.
I liked the Replicants.
They were my kind of people,
they were like these
wannabe gangsters who liked
playing the tough guy.
No, I never wanted to get in with
the real criminals, you know that.
And yet, here I am, and I'm
about to get thrown out of jail
into a swamp full of crocodiles.
Hey, if you don't want your freedom,
I'm sure we can arrange something.
Okay.
What do I do?
I could throw a violent outburst.
I could punch a guard or something.
You know what?
Did that do the trick?
Actually, no. All it
did was piss me off.
Well at least we know there are bigger
and scarier people in the mix
which lines up with Naz's theory
that Jake was put up to this.
Hey
Maybe they could help
us connect the dots.
I'll try anything at this point.
vacation saved, I could
take a trip to the Bahamas,
maybe run into Adeline French.
Or Clover English, as
she's going by these days.
- Can I help you?
- Adeline French? You found her?
Jaw-dropped, are we?
Gobsmacked, perhaps? Flabbergasted.
Dumbfounded.
Let us walk you through it. Susan.
We started from the beginning.
Followed a thread.
We looked into her
mother. We wanted to know
if she got any calls or
visitors while in prison. Nada.
Then we chased the threads
connected to everything
I knew about her. Her love
of clothes. Her love of wigs.
Her fear of eggs.
I knew that she loved
the Caribbean islands
and liked top-shelf Bordeaux.
So I looked into all
of the fancy hotel bars
in the Virgin Islands,
got a hold of their security coverage
Until eventually, we found this
on security footage at an outdoor patio
at Gemini Beach Club
in the Virgin Islands.
Thank you, Susan.
I've gotta say, I am impressed.
Well, it was a collective
effort from everyone involved
- in Badge Bitches.
- So just you and Susan here.
Oh, there are other members.
Sorry I'm late. What'd I miss?
- Right.
- Okay, we gotta show this to Fugitive Squad.
I mean, they've been trying to
track Adeline down for months.
You know what? This is exactly
what we need to do with Purple Rain.
We need to go back to the beginning
- and follow all the threads.
- Mm.
Oh, so you're saying you
just have copious amounts
- of hours to do this on your own?
- It's tedious work.
Uh, well, you know what?
Do you wanna sign up?
Do you wanna help? You wanna help?
- Well, that depends.
- Okay.
Would you like to be a
part of Badge Bitches?
- Uh
- Mm-hmm.
- What are the requirements?
- Bi-weekly meetings.
A very active and ongoing
demanding WhatsApp group chat.
Whatever, just sign us up, sign me up.
Okay. I'll get the paperwork going
and until then, Badge Bitches, activate!
Watch this!
Pretty fun. We're getting
better at it. It's great.
Jake, it's me. I'm off work here.
Jake, I recognized the
wallpaper from your video.
If your grandma still
lived here, she'd tell you
that you're being very rude.
Come on, man, I got
pizza and beer out here.
You here to work or you here to party?
Fine. I'm here to party.
- What have you got?
- Okay, so,
we have this drug,
it's called Purple Rain.
It's a cathinone, sort
of like bath salts.
But everything in it is totally illegal.
- You can't get anything past you.
- I know.
- Swallows.
- I miss you.
- I miss you.
- We're gonna have to get a list together
of all the ingredients
and then we're gonna have to
track down all of the suppliers
- in the city and the province.
- In the country, really,
- if we want to be thorough.
- Oh my God, this is gonna take months.
There's not enough Badge
Bitches. We need a shortcut.
Yeah, you're right.
We need someone who
understands the science.
Like a scientist?
A normal cathinone is made by
adding ethyl magnesium bromide
to 3-methylbenzaldehyde.
Then oxidizing that
with pyridinium
chlorochromate on silica gel
and brominated with hydrobromic
acid to yield the bromo ketone.
But something's different
with Purple Rain.
- It's very different.
- Of course.
Its creator swapped
the standard pyridinium
chlorochromate with
potassium permanganate.
- Yay.
- I don't get what you're saying.
It's commonly used in dermatitis,
wound cleaning, water
filtration systems.
We looked through that
file. We didn't see anything.
Because maybe your chemist wouldn't buy
potassium permanganate,
they would make it.
It's equivalent to making
pancakes from scratch
- instead of from the box.
- Oh.
My guess is your chemist
bought both potassium
and permanganic acid.
- That might narrow it down.
- It does.
There's only three importers
who sell both chemicals.
Just one guy imported a ton
of both to two aquarium shops.
Aquarium shops? Let me see.
Oh my God, oh my God, oh my God.
It's Fin City. This is Jenn's shop.
Remember Ro's friend,
Jenn? She owns Fin City.
Look. There's one in
Toronto. And one in Guelph.
Oh my God.
Tuesday's working with Jenn.
What about Ro?
Steve, hey!
You didn't have to come
all the way down here,
- you could have just called.
- You sounded angry enough.
It felt more urgent than a phone call.
Sorry, I just thought that
you went through my stuff
to find the name of our
confidential informant.
Why was that your first thought?
I don't know, Steve. I
mean, come on, you're like
desperate to prove yourself at work
and now you're working
with this Jayna person.
I don't know, I don't know why.
You don't trust me?
You don't trust me.
Ever think it might have been Ro?
She was on your computer the
other day looking up recipes.
Ro was on my computer?
To be fair, she was actually looking
up a recipe for Egyptian Foole.
But she was alone at the
house when I got there,
so who knows how long
she was on your computer.
Oh, wow. Okay. Uh, I have to go
But I want to know why
you're so quick to blame me.
You know what? Hey.
We're gonna talk about
this at home, you look
You're um, I gotta go
back to work. I gotta go.
Kell? Kell.
- What's up?
- Hey
Steve caught Ro on my computer.
She said she was looking at a recipe.
Ooh, does she know your password?
Well, maybe she figured
it out, because, you know,
she saw me punch it in
a few times and I just,
I wasn't that careful around her.
Maybe you should keep not being careful.
You let her find out
a few things that can
- lead her down a path.
- What? Really? Set up a trap?
- Why not?
- Well, because, I just
Yeah. Why not. Okay, how about this?
Um I will invite her and
Jenn over to dinner at mine
tomorrow night with you and me.
It would be a best friend
double date, nail her!
Why put off tomorrow
what can be done today?
I happen to know a few
friends coming together tonight
for a certain surprise party.
- You figured it out?
- Mm-hmm.
It's a secret.
Drink.
Wow, Jake.
You got Olympic skill level over here.
Yeah, it's too bad I couldn't go pro.
Remember how drunk you got
at Craig's birthday party?
- You passed out before dark.
- Yeah.
You drew a dick on my face.
So good. With a Sharpie.
School on Monday, dick
outline still on your cheek.
Why don't you let me help
you out of this, Jake?
I can tell you're scared.
And you always are
desperate to have a good time
any time you're freaked out.
Like that time, remember
we went to that school trip
to Rouge Park, got lost in the forest.
I was trying to find our
way out of the woods and you,
you were looking for
a lighter that worked
so you could smoke that weed
that you found in your pocket.
What about the time when
your mom got sick, huh?
I get it, you can't stand being scared.
Truth is, I miss you, man.
Yeah, well, I'm here now.
No, this isn't you.
You used to not be such a dork.
You knew how to have fun.
But that guy's not here. Where is he?
He became an adult.
Wanted to be a contributing
member of society.
Right.
Oh. Wow. It's about time.
Why don't you tell me who
made you take this fall?
Okay. So
The people I used to work
with wanted to expand, right?
So they made a big
promise to some bad people,
but then you guys
confiscated that promise
and now everybody's scrambling.
Just tell me who they are.
I can help you.
Tell you what.
If you want me to talk
beat me at this game.
Drink.
Tueli!
- Oh, Kelly. Hey.
- Sup.
- Hey. Hi.
- Hi.
Hi, there you are. Hi.
Hi. Ugh, you know, I've been buzzing,
buzzing, thinking you were home.
Uh, normally somebody passes
and let's me in but not today.
Pointless, right? Yeah.
Um, I lost my keycard so
I was just kind of hoping
someone would show up.
Right. Right.
- Well, here I am.
- Thank you.
Mm-hmm.
- Open
- Ugh, I'm opening it.
Surprise!
Oh, wow, I am so blown away.
- What a surprise!
- You had no idea, right?
- Fooled you.
- Yeah you sure did.
You need a ladies' night to celebrate.
Oh, Karina couldn't be here,
she's at home with Brixy,
- he's got a cold.
- Okay.
But, I have another surprise for you.
What? Let me guess, a stripper?
She was really glad we invited her.
- You got me a girl? Ooh
- Congratulations, honey!
Oh, I haven't seen you
in such a long time.
Come on, you don't have
a hug for your old mama?
Wow
You guys know how to knock
me on my ass, don't you?
You know I don't do parties, right?
But I just had to come
and celebrate the fact
that you finally found
yourself a good man.
And he found himself
a great woman, come on!
I really appreciate it, I really do.
I see you all have met
my mom, Donna, I guess.
She has kept us in stitches
for the last half-hour.
She was telling us stories
about you and your sisters.
I bet. Sorry I missed it.
Um, I need a drink,
so, I'll be right back.
Continue the party.
Well, back to me.
Now, you think I've
been sharing stories?
Girl, I have not told you anything yet.
You gotta get comfortable.
Where did I put my
drink? Where's my drink?
- Here, it's over here.
- There you go. Okay.
Yeah
All right. I win.
Now talk.
Hurry up.
I'm not feeling so good.
Oh my God, I love this song!
Man, I can't handle
drinking like I used to.
Yeah, man. That's not the booze.
It's probably the Purple Rain I
slipped into your drink a while ago.
What?!
Are you
Are you serious?
Yeah, man. I'm dead serious.
It's gonna be a trip.
Whew!
Ha, ha, ha!
I never thought I'd see the day
when this one got married.
I remember Kelly heading
off to school some Halloween,
must have been about second grade.
- She was dressed as Wonder Woman.
- Aw.
She was wearing one of my wigs,
big cape made out of a garbage bag,
and I said to her, I said,
"Why did you pick Wonder Woman?"
You know what she said?
Cool bracelet, fights bad guys,
never has to get married.
Right. Is that before you
went on that trip to Cancun
for a week then didn't
come back for two months?
You are right. You are right.
I started interning at
a little pottery shop
I stumbled onto.
I was very caught up in
finding myself back then.
But here I was, all along.
So, um, speaking of Wonder Woman,
uh, did you know that the creator
also invented the polygraph?
No!
Yeah, yeah.
And a bit of a non sequitur,
he was also into bondage and submission.
Fascinating.
- Gloria, are you married?
- Me?
Oh. No. I've never
really seen the point.
For me, it only became,
um, legal in 2005.
Respect. I am with you.
I mean, I love men.
And women.
But I wouldn't want to
be married to any of 'em.
Am I right?
You are right!
This was a really, really bad idea.
Kelly, relax.
Live a little, forgive a little.
She's not the same person
she was when we were kids.
Why don't you take five minutes
to find that out for yourself.
Are you sure she's not going to mind?
Yeah, Kelly said, "Bring Ro".
And then she said my
friends are her friends.
You know, Ro, and your
friends are my friends,
so guess what? That
makes all of us friends.
Ro thinks I spend too
much time talking to fish
and not enough time
talking to humans, so.
I do think that.
Your friends like tequila?
Who doesn't?
I appreciate you inviting her.
I'm the only person she has
in the world and it's just
- It's a lot sometimes.
- Oh my gosh, no problem.
Let's get in there and have some fun.
- All right.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
- Hi.
- Hello!
Ah! Welcome!
Come on! Come in.
Jenn, don't be shy. Come on.
Kelly, oh my God. Congratulations.
It's so great, I'm so happy for you.
Oh, thank you so much, Ro.
Bit last minute, but so
glad you could make it.
- I'm sorry, you are?
- Jenn.
Diamante. We were having a taco night
and then the next thing
I know, here we are.
Is that Prometida tequila?
Yes, ma'am, my favourite.
You wanna do shots with me?
Please, yes.
Oh my gosh,
I feel that headache coming on.
Uh, these are my
bosses. This is Ro Wells.
Uh, she works with Steve at the firm.
Wow, a defence lawyer.
- Usually, but not tonight.
- Good.
Tonight, I'm here
celebrating friendship.
- Oh, isn't that nice?
- Okay, let me get you a drink.
Yes, friend. Please.
So you're the friend that works
in the aquarium store, right?
- That's me.
- Is there a lot of money
in that line of business, or
Why?
You looking to switch careers?
Hey, it's always a possibility, right?
What?
Your job's way more exciting than mine,
busting big, bad, drug dealers.
Sounds more fun than it is.
You know, most drug
dealers are just people
who ended up on the wrong path.
That's very compassionate of you.
Not a typical cop, I take it.
No.
- I try not to be.
- Stop! No! Wait!
Halt for me, me I join.
Okay, here we go.
Thank you.
- All right!
- Ladies.
Mm.
- Mm.
- Uh
Mm
That'll get the party started. Mm.
I'll go share them around.
My eyes are watering.
Ugh.
Did you get anything out of her?
No. I'm still feeling her out.
Plus, I am grateful for
anything to distract me
from the guest I was surprised with.
What happened? Did
Tueli invite her mother?
No, Adriana brought mine.
- That's your mother?
- Yes, that's mine.
Whoa.
Oh gosh. Oh gosh.
Oh no.
Oh no, buddy.
Buddy.
I gave you too much.
Yeah.
You're doing the zombie thing.
Relax. Relax
It'll pass.
Guess what?
I'm leaving town.
Costa Rica is awesome, hm?
Maybe a little obvious.
Yeah, maybe Ecuador?
Panama?
Tree house in the forest,
hunker down and just
- Makes you sharp
- I see you.
You can see things.
I see you.
I see you.
Hey Naz.
Easy, Naz. Watch out, Naz. check it out.
- I got a vision, Naz.
- Don't.
Trust me.
Don't!
See?
It's making the real you come out.
You're strong.
You're tough.
I don't like this, Jake.
I don't like this at all.
It's okay, man. It's okay.
Now listen. I gotta
get this for posterity.
Hi, Nazeer,
off his head on Purple Rain.
Stop! Stop!
Your cop pals are gonna love it.
Biggest cocaine arrest
in Canadian history, the
mastermind right here,
this woman right here.
Oh, come on now, it was nothing.
Look, it was just five guys
sitting around picking their asses.
All it took is one
woman with an opinion.
- A big opinion.
- Well
Yeah.
- How much product?
- Ooh. How much product.
I've seen the wire, I know the lingo.
Oh, come on, Ro, you must have defended
big drug dealers before.
You know I don't kiss and tell.
But if you women had a
hand in bringing them down,
there's no way I would
have stood a chance
- at getting them off.
- Well, that's funny,
because you got a crackerjack
lawyer at your firm
who found a way to get
our whole case thrown out.
Oh, that case was yours?
We've had these geniuses coming to us
right out of law school these days.
Oh, what law school? I'm
thinking of going to law school.
Oh, what about policing?
You know, I thought about policing,
- but not now that I have a baby.
- Why not?
She's a mother
Okay, you know what? Let's
not forget why we're here,
to cheers, Kelly.
Congratulations on your not
so very secret engagement.
Okay, okay. I would like to
Oh, I love this song! Ugh!
I cannot hear this song and not move!
Mom, we can't talk when
the music is so loud.
Then don't talk, dance. Come on!
Whoa, so cute.
It's a goby fish.
I got it with Jenn. We were what, 16?
- Mm-hmm.
- She's the goby, not me.
- Show me yours.
- Ugh, no. That's okay.
- She's the pistol shrimp.
They're best buddies.
Like, symbiotic?
Mutualistic.
Jinx, buy me a Coke.
- Show your tattoo. Do it.
- Ugh.
Yeah, mutualism is the
highest form of symbiosis
because, um, well, it's
Both parties' benefit.
Goby and the shrimp,
they bond as juveniles
and then they stay
together their entire lives.
Just like me and Jenn.
I'll get it.
Yeah, thank you.
- I'm here.
- Yes, please.
- I have new
- No, I know
- Purple Rain
- No, shh, stop,
'cause we have to do it
in there. Okay? Oh, God.
I'm here with new information
on the Purple Rain case.
- What are you doing?
- It's about the informant.
I don't care, not at my
engagement party, give me this!
Put it on my desk upstairs and
deal with it later, come on.
I gotta get her home, she's
had way too much tequila.
- I'm gonna throw up.
- Wow.
Okay. Uh, where's your bathroom?
There's one that way
or upstairs, please.
I'm just gonna take her upstairs
because this is already
embarrassing enough,
you don't need to see her hurl her guts.
Come on. There you go, there you go.
What are you two guys up to?
What are you talking about?
I am not ready to shut this night down,
- let's open another bottle.
- No I gotta go to bed, I'm so sleepy.
Okay, maybe we can go find
a drink somewhere else.
- Yeah!
- Come on.
- That's a good idea!
- Tomorrow is another day.
Excelsior!
Come on!
My baby
- Mm, my baby.
- Yeah.
- Bye.
- Bye.
That woman was out of my life.
She's your mother, she's
always gonna be in your life.
Thank you. I love you.
Say hi to my baby.
Okay. That that was a lot.
Uh, Kelly, bravo.
Sam, I love you.
And Tequila Sheila, the Uber's
on the way, we're gonna go.
Good luck with your drug
busts and your gang detangling.
Good luck dismantling the
coral reefs of the world.
- Brush your teeth.
- Shall we?
- Let's do this.
- Let's do it.
Wow.
I guess Jenn sobered up pretty quickly
when we weren't watching her, huh?
You okay?
I just feel really stupid.
I really liked Ro.
She kind of made me feel
like less of a weirdo.
- Mm.
- Kell, what's wrong with me?
What?
Like, when will I ever learn?
What are you supposed to learn? Hmm?
To never let anyone in? To
always have your walls up?
No, honey, that's no good. Come here.
You should take your own advice.
Your mom
She's not so bad.
Yeah.
Maybe.
