Promised Land (2022) s01e10 Episode Script

La Tierra Prometida (The Promised Land)

1 Previously on "Promised Land" Let's talk about how to take back Heritage House.
You have to stop limiting yourself to your family's world.
You're meant for more.
Carlos Rincón.
An undocumented worker who came here 30 years ago and took the name Joe Sandoval.
I know you're in love with Joe.
I'm in love with Billy.
You love both of them.
I'm leaving you, Joe.
Do you remember when we were gonna add a second bedroom to this place? Oh, Mateo wanted a little brother.
For two, it's just the right size.
I do love it here, you know? But I've been thinking.
Maybe we could move back home.
Buy a little place there? Sonoma? México.
I mean, Junior is off to college next year, and the truth is, I miss it.
We could even plant a few rows there.
I know.
I'm asking you to give up a lot.
I would give up the world for you.
You're gonna have to answer that sooner or later.
Yeah, I know.
Hola, mi amor.
I was worried.
Oh, I'm sorry.
I'm fine.
I just needed to get away for a few days.
Are you alone? No.
I'm with someone.
Uh, h-have you talked to Joe? No.
And after the way he spoke to me the other day, I don't care if I ever hear from him again.
Okay, well, you should really put on the news.
In our top story, shares of Heritage House Vineyards are down 21% on the news that Chairman of the Board Joe Sandoval has lived in this country illegally for over 30 years.
Oh, my God.
Sandoval, a legend who built Heritage House into the country's third largest wine producer, is, in fact, an undocumented immigrant named Carlos Rincón.
A number of commentators and several members of Congress have called for no amnesty or special treatment for Sandoval, saying he should leave the United States immediately.
It now seems certain that Sandoval will lose his company to the woman whose family owned Heritage House before he arrived here from Mexico His ex-wife, hotel magnate Margaret Honeycroft.
She did it.
Goodbye, Joe.
Come back here, Lettie! Fine.
Go if you want, but don't bother coming back! You hear me?! Juana?! I don't want you! No one has been more loyal to our father than I have, but let's face it He's lost his way, and so has Heritage House.
It pains me to say this, but Joe Sandoval has to go.
A word of advice, mija.
You're not the first person to try and take me down.
Sooner or later, they all learned Joe Sandoval isn't going anywhere.
A breakaway faction.
You think you can pool your shares, get a few renegades to join you at the shareholders meeting tomorrow.
Hmm? Let me ask you, V If your mother hasn't been able to force me out, and you're not half the fighter she is, how do you expect to win? Pa.
No, Carmen, it's okay.
I've been hearing comments like that my entire life.
But that my own father would say them is just sad.
You locked out your own workers.
The damage you've done to this company Haven't you heard? Tomás and I made a deal.
Lockout's over.
It's my job to protect Heritage House.
One you gave me.
Just never thought I would have to protect it from you.
Let's see if your siblings agree.
Who's with Veronica? I am.
I thought you were smarter than that.
Anyone else? We have until tomorrow to make our decision.
I'm gonna wait until then.
So will I.
You made a serious mistake heading into battle before knowing your troops were behind you.
Yeah, I guess we'll find out at the shareholders meeting, won't we? I guess we will.
My two eldest.
The last people I ever thought would betray me.
You want to know who betrayed you, Apá? Look in the mirror.
Whoo! "Leading the striking workers, a charismatic field hand from Jalisco, México, named Joe Sandoval.
" Right? La charismatic! Eh? Ay.
Joe Hm.
Ah! - Yeah.
- Yeah.
I gotta hand it to you, Lettie.
If any woman could get a priest to break his vows What are you gonna do now? Well, we're thinking of maybe moving back to México.
That should make you happy.
Don't deny it, Margaret.
With me out of the way, you can get what you've always wanted.
I don't need you to leave to get Heritage House back.
No, no, no.
I'm talking about Joe.
He still loves you, Lettie.
Joe will always love you.
Once, perhaps.
But not anymore.
Well, I'm glad you feel that way, because it makes what I came here to tell you easier.
Um I know who you are, Lettie.
Or should I call you Juana? Antonio turned over the first stone, and I turned over a few after that, and in a couple of days I am going to tell the shareholders that Joe Sandoval is an undocumented immigrant named Carlos Rincón.
Investors put their trust in you, and when they find out that Joe's life is a lie, they will wonder what else he's been lying about, and they will come running to me.
But that's not what I came here to tell you.
I want you to know that I'm going to try to protect you.
Just because the world will find out the truth about Carlos Rincón does not mean they need to know about Juana Sánchez.
Let them know.
I'm not ashamed of being Juana Sánchez.
All I ask is this.
You need shares.
I will sell you my 5%.
Just, please, do not reveal Joe's secret.
It'll destroy him.
The way he destroyed my father? Oh, please, Margaret.
Years ago, I swore that I would get that vineyard back.
It's what drove me.
It's the only thing I had.
But not anymore.
You have your children now.
You don't need to do this.
I'm sorry, Lettie.
But I do.
That man has to learn a lesson.
No one steals from a Honeycroft.
Joe owns the lease on Mateo's vineyard.
He could evict him with 60 days' notice.
- Mateo won't risk pissing him off.
- Yeah.
We can't count on his support.
- What about Carmen? - It's Carmen.
She'll do what's best for her, which is support Joe.
So much for the insurgency.
Maybe not.
Look, we may not need their shares.
V, there's something about Apá that you don't know.
If I pledge my shares to Veronica, she said that she would get behind my sangria in a big way, make it a priority for Heritage House.
And do you believe her? - I want to.
- So, no.
Okay, so maybe I go to Papi, and I get him to make me a deal.
Why does this have to be so binary? Joe or Veronica, what's the difference? They both underestimate you.
You got a better idea? As a matter of fact, I got a call yesterday from Oasis Beverage.
They want to make you an offer for Gitana Sangria.
- What? - Yeah.
- They're huge.
- I know.
And unlike Heritage House, they're not just a wine company.
They've got energy drinks and hard seltzers.
They could take me national.
They could take you international.
But we gotta move fast.
Like, they want to sit down and have a meeting with you tomorrow fast.
Going outside the family.
That's That's a big step.
But it's the right step.
When something is scaring you, that's the universe telling you that you should be doing it.
- Set the meeting.
- Yeah? We're meeting.
I love it.
Set the meeting.
Hola, Marta.
I can't wait for this strike to be over.
I miss you.
I miss you, too.
I made you a reasonable offer.
You made us an offer.
I thought we could have a toast.
What are we toasting to? Pues an end to the strike.
It hurt both sides, no? Suit yourself.
I don't like blends, either.
That is a single vineyard Cab.
That's what the label says it is.
Now, if you knew the first damn thing about wine, you would know the juice only has to be 75% of the grape on the label.
But this isn't.
It's not even close.
You see, your Cab had a virus last year, but you don't want nobody to know.
So you added Merlot for a soft base, Cab Franc for spice, and Malbec for color and body.
How the hell can you know that? He has a good palate.
You see, Mr.
Honeycroft, there's a new reporter at the Register named Y.
López, and she's been writing some very nice stories about us.
I think she'd like to know about your, uh "single vineyard" Cab.
Where have you been? You told me to leave, so I left.
Were you with him? Yes.
He broke his wedding vows to you.
I guess breaking his oath to God is no big deal.
What about your promises, Joe? What about yours? You love saying family always comes first.
How's that working out for you, hmm? Your own children lining up against you.
So this is how it ends, huh? I have to pack a few things.
I can either use one of the guest bedrooms or stay at a hotel.
It's your house.
My God.
To live with a secret like that all those years.
Joe's no fool.
He knows what would happen if it ever got out he's illegal.
Oh, I don't like that word.
Yeah, and I despise it.
But that's what they're gonna call him.
The media, the shareholders.
V, I told Margaret about this.
If we don't use it, she will.
The shareholders will run to her, and she'll take over the company.
If the tables were turned, if Joe had this information about an opponent He would use it without hesitation.
Then we use it.
I thought I knew what I wanted.
The vineyard, the house on the hill.
But now I know.
What I really wanted is to be with you.
Billy Lettie.
No, no, no, no! Lettie! From the moment I saw the bottle, I knew a special creative force was behind it.
Then I saw your P and L's, and I knew this is exactly what we've been looking for.
So, you've heard what a company of our scope can do for Gitana Sangria, Carmen.
Now, let me tell you what we're prepared to do to bring you into the Oasis Beverage family.
A purchase price of $19 million.
That's a valuation one-and-a-half times greater than your own investment banker says the company's worth.
Plus, stock options exercisable in five years.
If those options were converted at yesterday's closing price, you'd receive an additional $60 million.
That's a lot of money.
But that's not why I do this.
Well, that's why we'd like you to come on board as Gitana's chief creative officer.
So you'd still be doing the work you love.
You'd just be a hell of a lot richer doing it.
There's one catch.
Uh, we'd like to launch a national ad campaign, and working back from the Super Bowl, we'd need to get that effort started, - well, yesterday, really.
- Mm-hmm.
We need to move fast, Carmen.
Like, today.
This is really fast.
I'm not saying that it isn't.
I should have someone look at it.
Heritage House counsel or Daddy's lawyer? Carmen, when are you gonna stand on your own? This is an incredible opportunity, and it's not gonna knock twice.
These people want to move.
Trust me.
Las herramientas para mañana.
- Vale.
- Sí, señora.
Hi, Mommy.
Alright, I'll see you next week.
- No.
- Hi.
No, you won't.
What do you mean? You win, V.
You want sole custody? Fine.
Just call your dogs off.
I haven't put any "dogs" on you, Michael.
Yeah, right.
Knowing you, you probably had Daddy or Margaret do it for you, huh? Well, you can tell them to stop.
I'm done.
Bye, Daddy.
Ah, sí? Ah, sí.
That's it, Papi.
Hey, mi amor.
How's the punchdown going? Joe was nice enough to lend me one of his vats.
And by nice enough, I mean he thinks it'll get me to pledge him my shares.
What are you gonna do? I don't know.
I've had my problems with Joe, obviously, but seeing what he's built and knowing now what that takes Veronica and Antonio never had to do that.
But the real question is, what are you gonna do, Ma? Well, you know, last week, at the harvest, working the vines, I felt something I hadn't felt for a long, long time.
We're thinking of maybe moving back to México, planting a few rows.
Look, I'm not gonna tell you what to do or where to go or who to go with, but if you're just planting a few rows, why do you need anybody? I mean, you've given your whole life to your family, Mama.
To Billy, then to Joe, then to me.
When is it gonna be your turn? Hmm.
The home test was right.
11 or 12 weeks, by the looks of him.
Him? It's a boy.
The doctor will be in to discuss your options.
Thank you.
Thank you for coming with me.
That's what friends are for.
Lettie I have to ask.
It's Billy's.
What are you going to do? I thought it only happened in books Falling in love with two brothers.
Billy He has a light inside him.
When he smiles, I feel so happy.
But Joe Joe When he looks at me, I I know that anything is possible.
What are you going to do, Lettie? I couldn't choose, so God chose for me.
I'm going to name him Mateo.
Billy! Sorry! Sorry! Sorry, sorry, sorry! Sorry, sorry.
It's so barren.
I think it's beautiful.
There's a quote I love.
"A vineyard in winter looks like hope.
" Well, that was poetic.
Where'd you hear that? Your father.
- Hey.
- Hey.
Joe Sí.
No, no, no.
Oye, Lettie.
No, no.
Leticia No.
No, Joe.
Letici Lettie.
We're even now.
I took your dream, the house, the vineyard.
You took Lettie.
It doesn't work like that, Joe.
I'm I'm sorry, uh, about the mess, but Marta is gonna ship everything to me.
You're not going to the shareholders meeting? I pledged my shares to Veronica.
It won't give her full control, but neither you nor Margaret deserve Heritage House.
Just each other.
Goodbye, Joe.
Don't go.
Buenas tardes.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen.
Welcome to our annual shareholders meeting for Heritage House Vineyards.
Whether you're here with us in Sonoma or one of the thousands joining us remotely, we're very happy you could make it.
Now, today, we will be electing six new directors to the board, but before we do that, I would like to start by inviting you to please Point of order.
Yes? Under the Heritage House bylaws, anyone that owns 30% of the common stock has the right to address the shareholders.
Given the recent labor conflict and the generally shoddy way the current chairman, Mr.
Joe Sandoval, has performed his duties, I invoke this right.
A one-hour window will be set aside for this purpose.
Honeycroft can address the shareholders after lunch.
It's time.
We need to know your decision.
I mean, my hands are tied.
The trustee pledged my shares to Dad.
Car? Can we help you take Gitana to the next level? I'm sorry, V.
I got a better offer.
From Pa? No.
Oasis Beverage.
And I've thought long and hard about this, but I'm moving on, and I'm not gonna take down Papi on my way out.
Mateo, that leaves you.
Joe built this company.
I respect you guys, but I can't be a part of taking that away from him.
I'm sorry.
That's it, then.
We either tell the world about Joe and blow him up or let Margaret do it.
You know how we said if the tables were turned, he wouldn't hesitate to use this information? Yeah.
Now I think That's exactly why we can't use it? - Yeah.
- Yeah.
There's another way.
Alright, I'm listening.
You control 39% of voting shares in this company.
12 more and you can ram your own slate of directors through and force Joe out.
We control 15 with Lettie's.
We'll give you control of Heritage House under two conditions.
The first, we run the day-to-day operations.
I'll head the wine division, and Antonio will spearhead the new spirits division.
One word tequila.
What's my role? Purely advisory.
You do have a chain of hotels to run.
What's the second condition? The name Carlos Rincón remains our secret forever.
You know, I may not need your 15%.
Once I drop the Carlos Rincón bomb, I think more than a few shareholders will come my way.
- Hmm.
- Maybe.
But then you'd have to run this place all by yourself.
- Yeah.
- That's a big job.
Pretty hard.
Yeah, it might not leave you a lot of time to get to know your granddaughter.
- Or your family.
- Be a shame.
Moral high ground one minute, emotional blackmail the next.
You really are daddy's little girl.
It's a deal.
It'll be nice working with my children.
In a purely advisory role, of course.
Joe Sandoval.
Thanks so much.
It's wonderful to see you all, especially my children.
In front of you, you'll see a copy of our company's annual report.
I regret to say, it contains a lie.
Not on our balance sheet.
Despite what you may have heard, Heritage House has never been stronger.
This lie is right on the first page, next to a picture of my face.
"My Story.
" It says I was born in Jalisco, México, and that's true enough.
I'll be damned.
Stop him.
But I didn't come here on the guest worker program.
I came over the Wall.
And my real name isn't Joe Sandoval.
It's Carlos Rincón.
I lied to you.
And I am so sorry for that.
I was scared that if the truth got out, I'd lose everything I've built.
I lost sight of the fact that the most important thing I've built, no man could ever take away.
But I am not sorry for coming here.
For working hard, or building this company.
I am not sorry for paying taxes, for giving hundreds of people jobs, or for making some of you very rich.
For chasing the dream? You'll never hear me apologize for that.
So, to the people who will say I don't belong here, that I'm illegal If wanting a better life for me and my children makes me illegal, then I'll wear the name with pride.
You want to deport me? I've got a mountain of money, an army of lawyers, and two U.
senators on speed dial.
Try to deport me.
In the meantime, there are millions of immigrants living in this country who don't have my money or my lawyers.
If past is prologue, I'm sure you'll go after them instead.
150 years ago, it was the Irish, then the Germans, the Italians, the Jews.
Right now, it happens to be my people.
A term I used to reject.
But not anymore.
You may get these people to leave, but you will never stamp out the thing that brings them here.
You can't deport a dream.
You can't keep it out with a Wall or a law or a slur.
Because this dream doesn't live on one side of the border or the other.
It lives here.
And that is a light that never goes out.
I gave Marta the day off.
Uh, the shareholders aren't voting until the morning.
Maybe they'll Shareholders aren't exactly known for their courage.
I think we both know how that's gonna go.
I didn't want to win like this.
Like what? You throw a hell of a punch, V.
But your first punch is always love.
That's why you're a better leader than I could ever be.
It's your time now.
Oh, I need a drink.
You heard about the shareholders meeting? It was awful.
What's the matter? The, uh The Oasis people called.
They're gonna table Gitana.
Table it? What do you mean? They just bought it.
Yeah, they have their own sangria that they're gonna push.
There's a campaign and everything.
They've been planning it for months.
You mean they bought Gitana just so that they could shelve it? So I couldn't compete against them? Yeah.
I feel horrible.
Yeah, well, you should.
Hey, you don't need to raise your voice at me.
Don't raise my voice at you, Nati? No, don't.
I put everything into that sangria.
I finally had something that was mine, not my family's.
And who do you think helped push you to get it there? You knew, didn't you? What? You knew! How could you even think that of me, Carmen? Are you Carmen.
Carmen! Carmen, wait! 10 years we were married, Joe.
Why didn't you tell me? Did I make you feel like you couldn't tell me? You made me feel like a king.
Anyway, what difference would it have made? I guess we'll never know.
What are you gonna do now? I mean, besides be the biggest pain-in-the-ass minority shareholder in the world.
- Do? - Mm-hmm.
This is all I know how to do.
I'm done with Heritage House.
I want you to buy me out.
20 years I've been waiting for you to say those words.
But now that you have Uh Goodbye, Margaret.
So you're just gonna lie here? Yep.
For the rest of your life? That is correct.
You know, I'm not a dermatologist, but that can't be too good.
Can I offer you a, uh, virgin margarita? Um, no.
I prefer the real thing.
Thank you, though.
So, you got any new ideas you're working on? Hello? Yo! What the hell are you doing?! You get screwed over once.
You're just gonna lie here and cry about it, or are you actually gonna do something? They took my idea.
So you only have one good idea? Damn, you really are screwed.
I saw your speech.
I thought you'd be in México by now.
I got a place in town.
The truth is, this is my home now.
I wanted to be a teacher when I first came here with Rosa.
That was my dream.
I know.
I have a new dream now.
I'm gonna see it through.
What about you? What are you gonna do now? I don't know.
Well, if you're looking for a job, my new business partner and I are hiring.
I'll give you a dozen rows to cultivate.
It's not much, but it'll be your show.
You can grow what you want.
Be your own wine maker.
Joe? Joe? Hey.
I spoke to my father.
I'd like you to sit down with him.
I don't think that's a good idea.
What? Please? Please.
Daddy doesn't think you fight fair.
I told him, that's not the only thing you have in common.
There's a fallow tract of land on the eastern edge of the vineyard.
I've never been able to make a profit on it, but, uh maybe I just haven't found the right man for the job.
Pues, Mr.
Honeycroft, I'm your man.
You don't need to do this.
You don't need to go.
I think it's for the best, Lettie.
You need time.
But know I will never stop loving you.
