Quantum Leap s05e05 Episode Script

Killin' Time - June 18, 1958

Theorizing that one could time travel within his own lifetime, Dr.
Sam Beckett stepped into the Quantum Leap accelerator and vanished.
He awoke to find himself trapped in the past, facing mirror images that were not his own and driven by an unknown force to change history for the better.
His only guide on this journey is Al, an observer from his own time, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Sam can see and hear.
And so, Dr.
Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home.
As one of the county's most celebrated and dramatic murder trials was set to begin.
1958.
How long are you gonna keep us tied up? What do you want? As convicted murderer Leon Stiles escaped.
I, uh- Details remain sketchy at this time.
I don't want anything.
Mommy, look, it's him! These are thought to be the most recent photos of Stiles.
Stiles escaped custody in a daring daylight shootout.
Stiles, described by authorities as an illiterate drifter, was recently arrested in connection with the murders of at least eight women in three states.
At this moment, he is the central focus in a county-wide manhunt.
Oh, boy.
Stiles made his violent escape after killing two deputies and seriously wounding another.
Police warn that he may still be in the area, and should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.
In space, the Sputnik continues- I've always made it a rule never tojudge people on first impressions.
Of course, rules are made to be broken.
There's some jewelry in the bedroom.
My wedding ring and some chains.
You can have it.
I don't want your jewelry.
L- I don't want anything.
I just- I need a second to figure out what's goin' on, that's all.
Are you gonna kill us? Oh, no.
L- No, of course not.
I promise, we won't say anything to anybody.
I won't even call the police.
Just please let us go.
Where are you, Al? Where'd you get that gun? I'm the one's askin'the questions.
Who are you? Uh, I told you, my name's Al.
- Yeah? Where am I? - Uh, well, uh- I know you're confused and everything, but I can't answer till you put the gun down.
Just answer the question! Oh, uh, well, this is- We call this the waiting room.
Yeah? How'd I get here? Well, that's a tough one.
Especially with a gun pointed at me.
- What's out there? - Uh, out there? Uh, oh- Uh, storerooms.
Yeah, store- We use them for st- We store things.
- Open it.
- No, I can't do that.
- Why can't you? - Well, we got a rule- No visitors can leave this room.
Believe me, it's for your own safety.
I ain't gonna ask you again.
Go on.
Not gonna ask again.
Okay.
All right.
Uh, let's not do anything that I'm gonna regret later.
Go on.
What the hell is all this? Uh, what is all this? What is all- Well, it's, uh, it's sort of an underground top secret research laboratory-style type of thing.
Oh, boy.
Admiral Calavicci, I was just looking for you.
Dr.
Beckett.
Yeah, Gooshie.
Admiral, Ziggy just received the preliminary data on the new leap.
Gooshie.
And she's extremely con - Dr.
Beckett? What do you keep callin' me that name for? Beckett? Well, you look like him.
- What's he talkin' about? - That's another toughie.
No, wait.
! Hold it, hold it.
! Hold it.
Put that gun down.
If you kill him, Dr.
Beckett can never get back.
Put your gun away.
That's an order, Corporal! Now, everybody, just take it easy, and no one will get hurt here.
You better do like he says! All right.
I'm gettin' outta here.
And anybody tries followin' me, I'll put a bullet through 'em.
You! You got a car? Yeah.
Well, gimme the keys.
Now! Gimme that coat too.
Come on! How do I get outta here? You! Tell me! You take the elevator up 10 levels, and out.
The car's right in front.
It's the blue one.
Leon, I don't think you want to do this.
It's not what you think it is out there.
I'll take my chances.
Move, boy! Corporal, get on the horn.
Make sure nobody tries to stop that man.
- On the double! - I'll call the police.
No, you can't.
Quantum Leap is a code one clearance.
We can't involve other agencies.
You know that! Anyway, it's too dangerous.
He's gotta be brought back alive.
Who's goin' after him? I am.
You would have been my first choice.
And I want Ziggy to put together a profile disk on that guy and have it ready by the time I get back.
Back? Where you goin'? Well, I gotta break the news to Sam.
I hope he's in a good mood.
Hasn't this gone on long enough? We're not a threat to you.
Please, untie us.
No.
You're right.
Uh, Sam, don't untie them.
We gotta talk.
Would you excuse me for a moment, please? Uh, I'll be right back.
Where the hell have you been? Oh, well, I had a little situation I had to deal with.
You had a little situation? I have a little situation here, Al.
Yeah.
I'm an escaped killer.
Well, that's sort of what I wanted to talk to you about.
- Do you see those two in there? - Yeah, that's Carol Pruitt and her daughter, Becky.
Oh, it's so nice to be on a first-name basis with my hostages.
Yeah.
I'm lettin' 'em go, Al.
No, you can't do that! Why do you keep sayin' that? Uh, 'cause they're the only thing you got to bargain with.
Bargain? Bargain with who? Leon Stiles, this is Sheriff Hoyt.
The house is surrounded.
Give yourself up before anybody else gets hurt.
Cut into the phone line.
This'll give you a direct line in and out.
Think he'll give himself up? I don't know.
Why don't you ask him? Have it cocked and loaded.
Grimes.
Yeah, we got all the weapons distributed here.
We just got word from the hospital.
Deputy Collins died on the operating table.
Keep an eye out on the roof.
Get my rifle out of the car.
Go on.
Do like I said.
That's it.
What are you gonna do? I'm gonna do what I should have done in the first place, untie those two and give myself up.
No, no, no.
Sam, you can't do that! Why not? Because Hoyt will kill you before you even get to the mailbox.
Is that what happened in the original history? Yes.
He killed-Why? Well, Stiles killed Hoyt's daughter.
It was a fluke kind of thing.
The girl just got in the way, and he shot her.
So then I'm here to keep Stiles from being murdered.
We think so.
Uh, yeah.
- "We think so"? What do you mean, "We think so"? - We think so.
See, we've been kind of busy with a-with another little problem.
- What's goin' on, Al? - I guess there's no easy way to tell you this, Sam.
- What? - He got away from us.
He got away from you? Mm-hmm.
What do you mean, he got away from you? Well, he- he escaped.
He escaped? Mm-hmm.
How could that happen? He escaped! Wait a minute.
Al, you didn't open the waiting room door, did you? Uh - Oh, please, tell me you did not open the waiting room door.
You did, you did! I can't believe this! Well, I couldn't help it! He took us by surprise! What do you mean, he took- Somehow he got hold of a gun, and he held the gun straight at me, like that.
What could I do? I couldn't do anything.
All right.
Okay, okay.
He got out of the waiting room, okay.
At least he's still in the complex.
Right? Uh - I can't believe this is happening, Al.
You gotta get him back! Oh, I will.
What do you mean, you will? I will! What do you mean? You're not thinkin' about goin' after him yourself, are you? Why not? Why not? Because he's a cold-blooded killer, that's why not.
Sam, this guy's gotta be taken alive.
And I need you here with me.
Don't forget, if he dies, you're finished.
And don't worry, okay? Don't worry, because I'm gonna leave Gooshie in charge.
Gooshie? Well, that's just perfect.
Yeah.
And if anything happens, he'll be in touch with you.
Ziggy is syncin' up his brain with your brain so that you can see him.
Me and Gooshie.
Yeah.
In the meantime, what am I supposed to do with those two? Well, just hang on for dear life, but don't forget that they're the only thing between you and an autopsy.
Oh, that's gonna be Hoyt makin' contact.
Now, you have to buy time for me, so he's gotta believe you're serious.
Meaning? Well, meaning you gotta make Hoyt believe that you're capable of killing those people.
- Yeah? - That you, Leon? - Yeah, it's me.
- Seems like we got us a little problem here.
It seems that way.
You know, I got some people in here with me.
I know you do.
How are they? They're okay.
They're a little scared, but they're okay.
Leon, we've got the house surrounded.
There's no way you can get out.
Now, why don't you let those folks go and give yourself up? Yeah, well, you know, I'd like to do that, but I'm afraid that I can't.
Now, you listen to me, you little pissant.
I don't wanna see any more innocent people get hurt here.
Well, that makes two of us.
But you listen to me.
You take one step toward this house, and I'll kill 'em.
You look like you're about ready.
Yeah.
That's about it.
Oh, did Ziggy, uh, do up that- Profile disk.
Oh, yeah.
Okay, now remember, if anything happens to me- I'm to immediately contact Dr.
Beckett.
That's right.
Now, I should have a backup hand-link.
Backup hand-link.
Oh, thanks.
Okay, good.
Now, uh- All right now.
All I have to do is find him.
I don't foresee that as a major problem.
What do you mean? Well, you remember last year when I had my car stolen? So? So, I took your advice and had one of those tracking devices installed.
Since it's hooked into a central monitoring station, I had Ziggy access the system and redirect the signal through the hand-link.
Do you mean I can find Stiles using the hand-link? I believe that is the general idea.
Gooshie.
Gooshie! That's fantastic! That's great! Gooshie, I could kiss you, if you didn't have bad breath.
I am touched.
Admiral, are you sure this is what you want to do? For five years I've been watchin' Sam Beckett risk his life for total strangers.
Think about it.
I wanna explain to you why I said what I did.
I didn't mean it, okay? I was just, uh- I was just tryin' to buy some time.
- What kind of man are you? - What? How could you do the things they said you did? How could you murder those women? I didn't, okay? I am not a killer.
Then let us go.
I can't.
Not yet anyway.
- Why do you hate us? - I don't hate you at all.
Look, I know you're scared.
I'd be scared if I were you too.
But there's an explanation for all this.
What kind of explanation? - You wouldn't understand.
- Try us.
Okay.
I don't expect you to believe everything I'm about to tell you.
I mean, I'm the one tellin' you, and sometimes I have trouble believin' it myself.
My name isn't Stiles.
It's Beckett.
Sam Beckett.
In 1995, I created a secret government project called Quantum Leap.
Now, I won't bother explaining to you how it works, but the result was the ability to travel in time- to inhabit other people's lives.
And now you're here? And now I'm here.
How come you look like the man on television? When I leap, you see the person I've leapt into.
But when I leap, it's my body that's here.
It's my spirit.
And the real Leon Stiles spirit is- In the future.
See, and that's the problem, because he escaped, and my friend is looking for him to bring him back.
I was gonna give myself up, but in the original history, Stiles was shot when he surrendered.
That's why I can't let you go.
You're the only thing keeping me alive until my friend comes back.
Do you have any idea what that sounds like? Yeah.
Yeah, I'm afraid I do.
How long you plan to wait? He ain't goin' anywhere.
Yeah, well, maybe we oughta try to negotiate with him.
Does he see anything else? You don't negotiate with a rabid dog.
Trap 'im, kill 'im and bury 'im.
Look, Sheriff, are you sure you don't want me and the boys to handle this? Like you say, he ain't goin' nowhere.
Do you think I can't handle myself? No, that isn't it.
I just think you've had a rough time of it since- Look, John, I just hate to see you do anything to ruin a fine career, that's all.
Appreciate your concern.
That man in there killed my daughter.
I fully intend to return the favor.
You promise you won't try and escape? I'm not goin' anywhere without her.
Look, I know you think I'm this dangerous person, but I'm not gonna hurt you.
Either one of you.
Then why won't you let us go? I told you already.
Oh, that's right, I forgot.
You're stuck here till your friend from the future gets back.
Guess I asked for that.
"Human Anatomy"? You always read textbooks? When I'm preparing for finals.
Finals? Medical school.
You're a med student? You surprised? No.
Well, maybe a little.
I mean, you're not exactly- What, a cheerleader? Look, just because you're over 21, doesn't mean your life is over.
What took you so long to get started? My ex-husband decided it was more important that I wait tables while he got his degree first.
Then when he got what he wanted, that was that.
So this is your form of revenge, kind of beatin' him at his own game? This has nothing to do with revenge.
I spent that anger a long time ago.
This is about me and Becky.
Sure brings back memories.
Memories? Yeah.
Um- I'm a doctor.
Of course you are.
No, really, I am.
Look, I hate to step all over your fantasy life, but the television said you were illiterate.
The television said Leon Stiles was illiterate.
Why are you doing this? Here.
What? Take this.
It's proof.
That's okay.
Go on.
I want you to ask me anything in there.
Aren't you a little curious? Respiratory system.
Perfect.
This is ridiculous.
Come on, come on, come on.
The lungs consist of five lobes.
Name them.
Right upper, right middle, right lower, left upper, left lower.
That's right.
Yeah.
Go ahead, ask me something else.
Somethin' harder.
Okay, here's one.
Name the bones of the foot.
Phalanges, metatarsals, cuneiforms, navicular, cuboid, talus and calcaneus.
I can spell them for you if you'd like.
- You memorized it.
- I just had the book for a couple of minutes.
It's possible.
When was the last time you met an illiterate speed-reader? Dr.
Beckett.
- Gooshie? - What? He's not a what, he's a who.
Your friend from the future? One of them.
Oh, great.
Now there are two of them? Gooshie, why are you fading in and out like that? I must not be tuned into your exact brain wave.
And your voice is- Ziggy did kind of a rush job.
What are you doin' here? Admiral Calavicci told me to let you know if Ziggy came up with any new information.
Did she? - Well, she said by not surrendering, you've changed history.
- For the better, I hope.
- In a way.
- Gooshie.
Now instead of getting shot outside the house, you get shot inside.
Exactly 91 minutes from now, Sheriff Hoyt is going to storm this house and kill you.
I'm afraid there's more.
During the shooting, the little girl gets caught in the cross fire.
- Becky? - Becky? What about her? Dr.
Beckett, she's gonna be killed.
Good evening, Admiral.
Before we begin the profile scan, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my admiration for your selfless attempt to rescue Dr.
Beckett.
It is a fitting testimony to the bonding which humans tend to display- Yeah, yeah.
Toward others of their species.
Unfortunately, I project a less than 34% chance of success.
Well, thanks for the vote of confidence.
Begin profile.
The target, Leon Randolph Stiles, age 26.
Abandoned at birth, was raised in a series of foster homes.
First arrested at age 17 for assault.
Served two years in the Hamilton Youth Detention Facility.
After being released, he relocated to Texas.
He eventually became the main suspect in a series of murders involving prostitutes.
He was finally captured after abducting and murdering a young local woman.
After running all available data, it is my belief that the target, Stiles, will attempt to contact a female that matches the profiles of previous victims.
I advise extreme caution in attempting apprehension.
Good luck, Admiral.
Uh, thanks.
I think I'll probably need a little luck.
Why won't you answer me? Why did you say her name like that? Is there any way you could have made a mistake? I checked it a dozen times.
What are you gonna do? Tell me.
You better wake her up.
No.
Don't you touch her! Look, I'm not gonna hurt her, okay? Then what are you doing? I'm just - I'm trying to save her life.
How? By letting her go.
Why? Does it matter? - Yeah? - Let me talk to Hoyt.
Wants to talk to you.
This is Hoyt.
- Yeah, look, I wanna make a deal.
- I'm listenin'.
I give you the little girl, you promise not to make a move on me.
We got a deal? Yeah.
We got a deal.
Good.
Good.
I'll send her out in five minutes.
Here you go.
Why do I have to wear this? Because I'm the mother, and I say so.
I want you to come with me.
I know you do.
Is he gonna hurt you? You are so pretty.
Have I ever told you how pretty I think you are? Now you be brave, all right? I love you.
Oh, I love you too, sweetheart.
I love you more than anything in this whole world.
It's time.
Okay.
You go on now.
I'll be out before you know it.
Okay, Becky, you just walk to me now.
I need to use the bathroom.
At least the little girl's safe, right? Yeah.
This is amazing.
What's that? Well, according to this, there's a Apparently saving the little girl accomplished your mission.
Except- Except I can't leap, because we don't have Stiles in the waiting room.
Time and space can be a bitch.
Uh-oh.
"Uh-oh," what? Nothin'.
It must be a loose circuit.
Gooshie.
According to this you still get killed by Hoyt.
He lied to me.
How much time do I have? Less than an hour.
All right, all right, all right.
You find Al, okay? You tell him what happened.
You tell him he's gotta have Stiles in the waiting room by midnight.
Or else I'm a dead man.
The right lane is for electromagnetic vehicles only.
Hey, baby, pull that thing on in here.
Come on.
You look lost.
What's that you got on your face? Body paint.
It's edible.
You got a place? Across the street.
It'll cost you 200.
Are you interested? Yeah.
Yeah, I'm interested.
Well, come on then.
Let's do it.
Come on, baby.
Time is money.
Admiral.
Who said that? It's me, Gooshie.
Gooshie? Where are you? I'm right in front of you.
Can't you see me? If I could see you, would I be talkin' to the sidewalk? I guess Ziggy didn't do a very goodjob of syncing our brain waves.
I'll take that as a compliment.
What are you doin' here? Dr.
Beckett sent me.
Is he all right? Well, for the time being.
"Time being"? He changed history, didn't he? Uh, what's gonna happen? Sheriff Hoyt's gonna kill him.
When? Less than an hour from now.
Ziggy says the only chance he has is if you can get Stiles back to the waiting room before it happens.
Lights.
Hmm, lower.
A little lower.
Hmm.
There.
Come on in.
I won't bite.
Unless you're into that kind of thing.
How'd you do that? Do what? With the lights.
Oh.
It was magic! How about a drink? Yeah.
Sure.
Bar.
I haven't seen you around here before.
Say, I like your outfit.
I used to have a pair of pajamas like that when I was a kid, only they had feet in them.
Here you go.
Wow.
You do like to party, don't you? So, what are you into? Talk? Games? Movies? Movies.
I knew it.
Guys love movies.
Video! You're gonna love this.
What's that? What do you think it is? Don't play games with me, whore.
Just tell me what it is! It's a video screen.
You been livin' in a cave or somethin'? Hey! I wanna know what the hell is goin' on here.
- I don't know what you're talking about.
- What year is it? - What? - The year! Just tell me what year it is! - It's 1999.
- Don't lie to me.
I think you're lyin' to me.
Why is it you whores are all liars, huh? - No, I'm not! - All right, Leon.
Hold it.
- You drop it, or I'll kill her! - Hold it.
Help me.
Shut up! Leon, I know you're confused.
But the truth is, you don't belong here.
What is this, some kind of dream or something? No, it's not a, dream.
I came to take you back, Leon.
Back to where? Back to 1958.
There was a mix-up in an experiment, and accidentally you traveled You traded places with a friend of mine who's stuck back in '58.
You think I'm stupid? Would I make up a story like this? People don't just jump into other people's lives.
Well, my friend does, and I'll prove it to you.
Uh, cutie, is there a mirror here somewhere? Mm-hmm.
Mirror.
Okay.
Now, I'll tell you what, Leon.
Just check out your reflection in there.
I don't believe this.
This can't be happenin'! Yeah, well, it's real.
And you gotta believe it.
You're in my head.
You ain't real! None of you's real! No! - I gotta get back.
- You killed him.
You, stand up.
Go on.
That's it.
That's it.
Don't look at me.
Close your eyes.
Don't shoot.
Shh.
Bang.
Oh, my God.
I thought you were dead.
No, I'm not dead.
What's that? That's a bulletproof vest.
And never track a psychotic killer without one.
Hey, is that guy from another planet, or what? Mostly "or what.
" Help me up, will ya'? Oh, geez, where is he? Where is he? Who cares? Where's my hand-link? Your what? Where's my - It's a little, colorful, stupid thing.
That flashing gizmo? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, he took it.
He said something about getting back, and then he split.
I don't know where he went.
Say, take it easy.
You know, you should get to a hospital.
Or I could take care of you.
It's tempting, but I don't have time.
Honey, I'm gonna need to ask you some questions.
Are you gonna get my mommy back? We're gonna try.
But I'll need your help.
Do you think you can help me? Yes.
Good.
Now, I need you to tell me where Mr.
Stiles is keeping your mother.
Mr.
Beckett.
What? His name is Sam Beckett.
Mr.
Stiles is in the future.
What do you mean, he's in the future? Mr.
Beckett traveled in time and switched places with him.
Now he's here, and Mr.
Stiles is there.
Did he tell you that? Yes.
Darlin', where is, uh, Mr.
Beckett holding your mother? In the living room.
Good girl.
You've been a big help.
Now, if you just sit here for a little bit, I'll be right back.
What the hell was that all about? He's startin' to fall apart.
We haven't got much time left.
Maybe we oughta try and call him again, calm him - No! It's too late for that.
It's time to end this once and for all.
What's it like? It? The future.
You believe what I said? I don't know what I believe.
It's like everything's backwards.
I mean, you break into my house and you terrorize us.
I see the television, the things they say about you, then you turn around and you let Becky go.
You're supposed to be illiterate, but you know more than most of my professors.
It's like nothin' makes any sense anymore.
Welcome to my world.
What's gonna happen? There's a man out there.
He's gonna kill me.
He's gonna come in here and shoot me.
Why? Because Stiles killed his daughter.
When will it happen? Soon.
Oh! Oh, you ain't goin' nowhere.
I'm the one goin' somewhere, 'cause you're gonna steer me back where I came from, right? L- I can't do that.
I think you're lyin' to me.
Don't get me wrong, I mean, I'd love to accommodate you, but it doesn't work that way.
We don't have control over it.
Well, who does? Well, that kind of depends on your point of view.
Call yourself a religious man? Probably not.
Okay, now you're lyin' to me.
You take me back to where I came from right now, or I'll kill you.
Well, you're just gonna have to kill me then.
Leon! Get outta there, Gooshie! Who are you? Okay, Gooshie.
Just can't leave you alone for a minute, can I, Gooshie? Admiral, what happened? Uh, nothin'.
I just, uh - I zigged when I shoulda zagged, that's all.
Come on.
We gotta get him into the waiting room.
We only got a couple of minutes to get Sam back.
Corporal, help us out.
We're gonna drag him in there.
Come on.
Where are we goin'? I'm not goin' anywhere, you are.
What about you? Don't worry about me.
Wait.
He's comin', isn't he? Yeah, yeah, he's comin'.
Well, what about your friend? I guess my friend didn't make it.
Guess again.
Al! Al, wh-what's wrong? Are you all right? What are you - Oh, yeah.
Oh, it's nothin'.
Just a couple of nights in bed with a hot nurse.
I'll be fine.
I take it that you found Stiles? Yeah.
Oh, yeah.
We kind of ran into each other.
Where is he? Oh, Sam, I nailed him with a tranquilizer dart, right in the neck.
That's great, that's great.
Where is he? Well, he's sleepin' like a- Where? In the waiting room.
- In the waiting room! That's great.
- What? What's great? He got him! He's got him in the waiting room too.
Oh.
Oh, good! In the waiting room.
Yes.
You told her who you really are? It's a long story, and I'm runnin' outta time here, okay? I mean, I should be leaping now, right? Because I'm- Anytime.
Yeah, yeah.
Anytime.
Look, I am really sorry that you had to go through this, and I'm sorry that your little girl had to go through this.
And for whatever it's worth, I think you're gonna make a terrific doctor.
Thank you.
You're welcome.
Okay.
Okay, I'm ready.
Okay.
He's ready.
- What's the matter? - I'm not leaping, that's what's the matter.
Why am I not leaping? I don't know.
You don't know? You gotta know, Al! I'm running out of time.
Well, this thing- Don't move! Keep your hands where I can see 'em, Stiles.
You all right, miss? Uh, yeah, I'm fine.
That's good.
Why don't you step over here and let Deputy Grimes take you out.
- Come along with me.
- Sam, if she leaves, you're dead.
- What about him? - Don't you worry.
I'll take care of him.
You go on now.
No.
- What'd you say? - Maybe you should do what he says.
- Sam, no! - I'm not leaving.
Not alone, I'm not.
