Incident West of Lano

Hyah! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Keep movin', movin', movin'? Though they're disapprovin'? Keep them dogies movin'? Rawhide? Don't try to understand 'em? Just rope 'em, throw, and brand 'em? Soon we'll be livin' high and wide? My heart's calculatin'? My true love will be waitin'? Be waitin' at the end of my ride? Move 'em on, head 'em up, head 'em up, move 'em on? Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, ride 'em in, let 'em out? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in? Rawhide? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Hyah! Hyah! Rawhide!? Hyah! I got a cousin woman teaches in a schoolhouse back east.
She tells me those boys daydream about becoming cowboys.
Of all the jobs a man could pick, why'd ever he want to choose this way to make a living? lowest form of life- ya.
If they don't die of tick fever, strangle in a dust storm or trample their fool selves to death, then the market'll go down to two cents a pound on the hoof.
They might as well have died before we set out.
But they need food back east.
It's my job to get this herd moving.
My name's Gil Favor, trail boss.
Wishbone's sure having trouble with that chuck wagon.
Can't seem to keep the wheels out of the holes.
Disposition of his is like a bucket full of worms.
He's out of tobacco.
Guess he's sore 'cause we bypassed the town.
We got tobacco.
Not that stuff he smokes.
See if Joe Scarlet needs any help on the swing.
Let me know.
Right.
How are you making out, Wishbone? How do you think I'm making out? You could churn buttermilk on this thing the way it's bouncing.
Why don't you let Mushy handle the team? Oh, yes, sir.
Ain't the team.
We'd gone through Lano, we'd be traveling a decent trail by now.
Going through towns can mean trouble.
Trouble is something you're liable to find most anywhere, Mr.
Favor.
Yeah.
I was wondering if you wanted me to check on a butchered steer I run across off to the left.
Butchered? Yeah, it's out past where Joe Scarlet's been working.
Somebody downed it with a bullet between the eyes and carved off a hind quarter clean as a Sunday shirt.
There's tracks leading away from it.
I didn't know if you wanted me to leave the herd.
Better keep hazing the live ones in, Pete.
I'll take a look at the carcass.
Mr.
Favor? Going somewhere? Want to go? Sure thing.
Come on.
Pete was right.
The bullet's square between the eyes, hind quarter cut off better than a butcher could do.
Comanches? They wouldn't have left anything but the bones.
What are we going to do about this? Hunt for the tracks, follow 'em, find out who did it.
Afternoon.
Where did you come from? Back a ways.
Not much of a place for a picnic.
You think this is a picnic, you better look again.
No spare wheel? No spare wheel.
We tried to fix it.
This is pretty rough country.
What would you do if Comanches moved in? We'd use this.
We know how to use them, too.
I can tell that by the sign on your wagon.
But Comanches can't read.
Suppose they sneaked up on you? Like you tried to do, Mister.
I didn't try and sneak in here, but my friend did.
Men.
Roast beef.
Oh, boy.
Only ladies would have the nerve.
Well, we didn't steal it.
We were hungry.
We found the cow roaming loose.
Oh, oh, that wasn't a cow.
That was a steer.
And you'll find a lot of them roaming a few miles from here.
Uh, roaming towards Sedalia, Missouri with, uh us pushing them.
We'll pay for the cow.
We didn't do that.
Whiskey-sopping' old coot who called himself our manager was driving.
What happened to him? He sneaked off in the night with two of our horses.
Guess he figured they're worth more than we are with us out of work.
Where were you heading? Next town.
It's a long way from here.
Might be smarter if you went back to Lano.
Oh, we got run out of Lano.
The wives didn't like their men watching our shows.
Couldn't stand it, 'cause they thought some of us were pretty.
But getting out here like this- it don't make sense.
Our manager said we were taking a shortcut.
Sharpshooters, knife-throwers and fancy roping artists.
But not much on fixing broken wheels.
There are some things a woman can do and some she can't.
When she can't, she hopes maybe a man'll come along.
Those wives were right.
You are pretty.
Would you like another piece of roast beef? You know, we eat beef all the time on this drive, but it never tastes like this.
You know, maybe it's, uh Maybe it's the company I'm in.
You're the prettiest bunch of girls I've seen in a long time.
He seems to be doing all right for himself.
You four girls really sisters? Just Emily and me.
She's the one with the dark hair.
I'm Hannah.
Gil Favor.
I guess we can fix the wheel for you.
But you can't keep traveling through this country.
Could run into Comanches.
If we go back, we run into wives.
They're worse than any Comanches.
You haven't seen many Comanches.
And you haven't seen many wives.
Comanches wouldn't bother us if we were with you, would they? With us? We're a bunch of trail drovers pushing beef to a railhead.
That's nothing for women to be part of.
Well, I was only thinking of making it to the next town.
There's a lot of trail between here and the next town.
All of it rough.
Any rougher than what we got here? We'd better fix that wheel before we decide anything like that.
Rowdy, ride back to the chuck wagon and get some tools.
And we'll need a couple of horses from the remuda, big ones.
Uh, you gonna stay here? I guess one of us better.
Hannah? Yes, honey.
They're going to help us.
I kind of figured on it.
But even if they do fix the wheel, we'll still be out here all alone.
Oh, sis, I'm scared.
Now, honey, don't you worry.
We're going to have all the protection we need.
Rowdy? Want to tell me why? Why what? We're running a big drive.
My chuck wagon breaks a wheel, I can always replace it.
That's right, Wish.
I can always replace it if you don't steal it.
Where are you going with my spare wheel? Oh, Mr.
Favor's asking for it.
I don't care who's asking for it.
You don't? That wheel stays right where it is.
Right now.
What's he gonna say if the drive breaks down 'cause I got no spare? This wheel stays right here.
Wishbone, you touch that wheel, and I'll whop you.
You'll what? Whop you.
Now, what's that mean? Mr.
Favor needs this wheel.
What for? It's none of your business.
He wants it right now.
Are you going to stand around and say no? Now, who have I got to say no to? Now, where is he? And what's he want with my wheel? And why are you acting like such a big drover? Shut up, Wishbone.
You wouldn't believe me if I told you.
Your mouth's too big, that's why I don't tell you.
You'd have the whole drive upset.
All right,don'ttell me.
Ride off with my spare wheel.
But you're gonna hold up the whole drive, that's what.
We're not gonna move an inch till I get that wheel back.
You hear me? You hear? I don't see no point in fixing food when people ain't here to eat it.
Where did you say they was? I said I didn't know.
Don't you ever know nothing? Now spread them logs so that fire don't flame up so high.
When do we eat, Wishbone? When you get it.
When do we get it? Don't ask him nothing now.
He'll bite your ears off.
He won't be fit to live with till he gets some smoking tobacco.
Will you lookee yonder? What's coming off here now? I don't believe it.
Looks like we got visitors.
And what visitors! Where did you find 'em, Rowdy? Sharpshooters and fancy rope spinners.
They can throw a rope on me any old time.
Get these horses fed and bedded down.
Stick your eyes back in your head.
About as pretty as ten dollar gold pieces, every one.
Let me help.
Whoo-hoo! Ah ha! Ah ha! Ah! Yee-ha! That's enough.
Whoo! Ah-ha! That's enough! It's a good time for you men to get something straight.
These ladies are traveling with us to the next town.
And theyareladies.
I'll expect you to treat them as such all the way.
Don't forget it, any of you.
Now there's a man, Emily.
You don't find his kind very often.
You just don't find 'em.
There'll be four more for supper tonight, Wishbone.
Mr.
Favor, nobody in his right mind lets women travel with a trail herd.
There'll be no trouble if the men treat 'em with respect.
No trouble for the women, maybe, but how about us? It's a bad thing having females with an outfit like this.
Now, look, Wishbone, I can't help it.
They were stranded out in the open.
I couldn't leave them.
Well, I never saw the beat of it in all my life.
Ah.
Take care of their wagon, Rowdy.
Your cook doesn't seem to like us.
The only thing I know that Wishbone likes is strong tobacco.
He's been out of that for two or three days.
I want to thank you for what you're doing for us, Mr.
Favor.
Nothing else we could do.
Where do you want us to ride tomorrow? Right point.
Uh, that's on the right side up front.
Or you'll be eating dust all day.
How soon do you think we'll be at the river? Another couple of days maybe.
Everything seems to be all right here.
Better check the horses.
Hannah? Mm-hmm.
Mr.
Favor's outside.
Mr.
Favor? Well, Hannah.
Oh, hush.
Uh.
Hello, Mr.
Favor.
Everything all right? Everything's fine.
I just came by to tell you we'll be leaving early in the morning, right around dawn.
That won't bother us.
Good night.
How did you get the tobacco? Oh, that Miss Hannah.
She had some in their wagon.
Said it belonged to their manager.
She's a fine, thoughtful woman, Mr.
Favor.
Yeah.
River's up ahead.
Want to check the crossing with us? Know any of 'em, Pete? Yeah.
I think I know two of 'em.
Looks like Dave Blaney and Cliff Troxel.
Hard to tell at this distance.
I've heard of Troxel.
He's a gunfighter.
They say he gets downright mean.
Yeah.
Let's try the crossing.
Troxel.
Which one of you is Mr.
Blaney? Me.
Who are you people? My name's Favor.
We've got a herd moving up for a crossing.
You better slow 'em down.
I got some wagons coming along this bank, and we figure to get them moving before nightfall.
I guess we'd better flip a coin.
I ain't flipping anything.
I figure we got here first, we cross first.
Look dead even to me.
Maybe we ought to tell him who we are, Mr.
Blaney.
We know who you are.
Giving us the dog eye won't win you any arguments.
Whoever crosses last loses three days until the riverbed hardens again.
Why don't you try another crossing a little ways up the river? Hundred yards either side of here, the water's Now why don't you try it? Are you asking, or are you shooting your mouth off? Sonny you listen to me Let it go.
I'm taking my wagons across first.
I got a load of hides to get to Galveston for shipping out.
And I mean to get 'em there on time.
What kind of hides? West Texas ain't buffalo country.
You mean you've been slaughtering steers just for the leather? I might have known.
I can smell it on 'em.
Now you keep talking like that, and we ain't gonna like it.
The sooner you don't like it, the better.
Rowdy! No use bickering about it.
We both got here together.
Now if you don't want to toss for who goes first, I'll cut the cards with you, anything you say.
I say, we go first.
Don't try it.
Don't even try coming near this crossing.
Not till we've got it settled.
Pete, I want this crossing watched.
Those wagons come within half a mile of it, let me know.
Right.
Mr.
Favor, we back down on this every outfit between Sedalia and the Gulf is going to know they can push us around.
We're not backing down.
Hold the herd! We'll hold here.
We're making camp.
Circle the herd! We're holding here! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! Hyah! We'll be making camp here.
Not going to cross the river? Not yet.
Anything wrong? Looks like this is far as we go today.
Hope we camp near a river.
Maybe we can take a bath.
Not with all these men around.
No reason why we can't get some clothes washed, though.
I have some shirtwaists that need doing.
You've got more than that.
You've got skirts, blouses, shirtwaists, petticoats, and so have I.
More, more.
Them cowmen, they brought women with 'em.
Now, what do you know about that? Filthy.
Well, it ain't the hottest.
I don't mind.
Hannah? I thought you were asleep.
Margaret was snoring.
It woke me up.
Is anything wrong? Don't you feel well? I never felt better.
Why? Why aren't you asleep? Just didn't feel like going to bed, that's all.
Are you sure it isn't something else? A man, maybe? Honey.
You can't fool me, sis.
You haven't been yourself since you met Mr.
Favor.
I never heard the like.
Just came out here for a breath of air, that's all.
You go back to bed.
Such a nice night.
They tell me you can see the herd from over there.
I'd like to see if cows really sleep standing up.
Hannah, don't let yourself get hurt by this.
Now, how on Earth could I get hurt? Here, you take this.
Maybe it'll help settle your nerves.
Expecting trouble? Trouble? I heard about those freight wagons on the other side of the river.
Just a little disagreement about who's going to go first.
It'll work out.
Real pretty moon up there.
Makes a man feel he don't stand near as tall as he thinks.
Makes me feel good.
You like what you're doing, Miss Hannah? You mean the show? It's a living.
There's always that to think about.
We all figured it might get us out to California, anyway.
I guess every woman likes to think of having her own home sometime.
Yes, I suppose they do.
I've got to make my rounds.
I best be getting back to the wagon.
Goodnight, Miss Hannah.
Goodnight, Mr.
Favor.
Evening, ma'am.
Nice evening.
Hello.
Standing here all by yourself? Just for a minute or so.
My, but you're pretty.
Pretty girl like you shouldn't be alone.
Why don't we take a little walk together? Who are you? Are you Mr.
Favor's men? We got a camp across the across the river.
It's a nice camp.
Like to have you visit us.
No, thank you.
I'd rather stay here.
Aw, come on now.
A nice evening like this with that moon up there.
Like to have you see our camp.
I don't want to see your camp.
And Mr.
Favor isn't going to like it if you keep on insisting.
Mr.
Favor? There's no reason for anybody to get mad.
You're putting on like I was going to hurt you or something.
Am I going to have to call for help? We'll see our camp, that's all.
Hannah! Hannah! Hannah! Hannah! Hannah! Shut up! Hannah! Hannah! Are you all right? Hannah! There, don't worry now.
What's happened? Two men, they were dragging her away.
One of Blaney's bunch.
He's dead.
I shot him.
Looks like they'd been going at it pretty strong.
Better go back to the camp.
What are we going to do with him? He's theirs.
They should have him.
Take him across the river.
Leave him on their doorstep.
But that's all, understand? That might be all for us, but what about Blaney? We'll face that when it comes.
I got an idea that's going to be pretty quick.
Dawson, what'd you go and do? How'd you get here like this? How come you're laying there dead?! What are you doing, Dawson, with a bullet in your back? You freeze, huh? When you come to it, you go soft inside and turn your back.
Turned yellow, didn't you? You got scared.
He was drunk! He was drunk where? Across the river.
All right, he was drunk across the river.
That trail boss come up and face him? That trail boss come up and square off with him? What's the matter with you, big gun? You're asking a lot of questions.
You ain't asking 'em for anyone but you, are you? You didn't even ask what we were doing over there.
I don't care what ya's doing over there.
I want to know how someone gets shot in the back if he stands up and faces that trail boss.
Why don't you just let it go? Let it go? Yeah, let it go.
Let it go for a while.
A short while.
Dawson? I'm sorry, Mr.
Blaney.
What happened? They crossed the river just like they knew how to handle a gun.
I didn't give you permission to cross the river.
The truth is, Mr.
Blaney, me and Dawson just went over there to keep watch.
We was just trying to make sure they didn't try sneaking their drive over during the night.
And they shot Dawson down, huh? That's the way it happened.
A bunch of 'em fired, but they were in the brush.
I couldn't make out who they were.
Troxel.
Yeah? We've come a long way.
We've come through blizzards, wet, heat, sand.
Yeah, yeah.
We've hit everything, except the human element.
That's right.
But it's up to you now.
Blaney.
Yeah? I've been waiting.
I'm on my own? Get out of here.
I hear you.
Troxel wait till sunup.
Most likely they're watching for you now.
At sunup when they're getting ready to go, they'll be busy.
They won't be looking for you.
And I don't want you to go over there and just shoot somebody.
Find out who did it.
I'll find out.
I'll find out the first thing.
Two of Blaney's men are coming in.
You want something? Blaney sent us over to get the man that shot Dawson.
You go back and tell Blaney he didn't send enough of you.
Dawson got what he asked for.
We're not giving anybody up.
Sure you feel that way about it? I'm sure.
Well, you got the odds on your side.
It won't be this way a second time.
You'll give him up sooner or later.
Not now, not any time.
Maybe you're the one that put a bullet in Dawson.
Seem like to me the way you're acting.
No use talking about this, so just ride on out.
Better watch yourself, Favor, from now on.
Better watch yourself real good.
Hyah.
Get back to the river, Pete.
Mr.
Favor.
You think it's safe for you to go out there? Who knows what's safe? I don't like it.
They'll be gunning for you and it's my fault.
You only did what anyone would do.
Why didn't you tell him I shot that man? I'm a woman, they wouldn't bother me.
Maybe not.
I'm not afraid of them.
I know.
Then why protect me? I see no reason for letting men like that judge you.
I like you, Mr.
Favor.
Is that all right with you? I'm glad you do.
Now wait.
I've been wondering if if maybe you like me.
I think you're a fine woman, Miss Hannah.
Fine-looking, maybe? I don't have to tell you that.
I'd like to hear it from you, Mr.
Favor.
I think you're a fine-looking woman, Miss Hannah.
Why are you protecting me? You couldn't help what you did.
I know that.
We all know.
I'm not talking about that.
You don't know what to make of me, do you? All I know is, I made some rules for my men.
I've got to live by 'em, too.
Well, I I guess that's that.
Hey, Wishbone, you seen Mr.
Favor? I thought he was out at the herd with you.
Here's Mr.
Favor.
Been looking for you.
Those cattle smell water.
They'll break any time now.
That's right.
Well, I'm for letting 'em break.
Let Blaney try and stop us.
That'd be quite a job, us hazing beef through that water, fighting at the same time.
They'd spread us all over this prairie.
I've been checking the river.
Blaney's right- there's only one crossing.
Mr.
Favor.
You can't just let 'em beat us to it.
What do you want, Wishbone? I'm running low on beef.
I need somebody to butcher a steer.
Mr.
Favor, we can go up there and fight it out with 'em! Scarlet, you want to take care of that steer for Wishbone? Sure, boss.
Remember, we got the women to think of, too.
I must be getting tired or something.
I didn't hear you come up.
I came to tell you we're leaving you, Mr.
Favor.
Leaving? Why? I talked it over with the girls, and we've caused too much trouble for you.
You're saying that, not me.
We were only going to stay with you till the next town, anyway.
It's still a long haul.
You've got problems of your own without us making things worse.
Look, I don't recall but if I said anything You didn't.
We made our own decision.
You think that's smart? This is bad country.
It's going to get worse.
The four of you alone, there'd be a lot of risk.
We've been alone before.
I've been figuring if I can get you to another town you might be able to tie in with somebody.
Have some kind of protection.
That was nice of you.
I wish you'd think about it some more.
We've made up our minds.
Sorry.
We'll spend the night here if it's all right with you.
Certainly, it's all right.
Thanks, Mr.
Favor.
Thanks for everything.
Mr.
Favor! Mr.
Favor, up there! Look out! Look out! I'm hurt, Mr.
Favor.
What happened? Who did it? Came from up there.
Trying to get me.
Can I help you, Mr.
Favor? We've done just about everything we can for her, Emily.
Mr.
Favor, would you come in, please? How is she? Very restless.
She said something a little while ago that sounded like your name.
The boss here? Inside.
The horses ready? Over there.
Mr.
Favor? Mr.
Favor? Mr.
Favor? Blaney's fixing to move them wagons.
They're hitching up for the crossing right now.
All right.
Wishbone.
There's a little knoll at the south end of the camp.
There's some manzanita growing on it.
Know where I mean? I know.
Is she gone? Get some shovels.
Have Mushy help you.
All of you mount up.
Come on! Come on! Can't you hook 'em up faster than that? Hook up the trace! Come on, hitch 'em up! Get that six-pan fixed.
We got to get rolling! We ain't got all day! We got to cross that river! Mr.
Blaney, look what's coming.
Here they are.
You looking for trouble? Understand you're fixing to make a crossing.
You think you can stop us? Troxel talking for you? WhyDoes it bother you? I like a man to do his own talking.
I do my own talking, Favor.
Now, I'm telling you, get out of here or I'll burn you down.
You can try it, but this time, it has to be out in the open.
I can do it anywhere.
We can still toss a coin for it, Blaney.
Call it.
Heads.
Tails.
You satisfied? Yeah, I'm satisfied.
Let's get those cattle moving! Hyah! Ho! Hyah, hyah! Head 'em up, move 'em out! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin'? Keep rollin', rollin', rollin'? Though the streams are swollen? Keep them dogies rollin'? Rawhide? Through rain and wind and weather? Hell-bent for leather? Wishin' my gal was by my side? All the things I'm missin'? Good vittles, love and kissin'? Are waiting at the end of my ride? Move 'em on, head 'em up, head 'em up, move 'em on? Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, ride 'em in, let 'em out? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in? Rawhide? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Hyah! Hyah! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin'? Hyah! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'?
