Incident of the Coyote Weed

Hyah! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Keep movin', movin', movin'? Though they're disapprovin'? Keep them dogies movin'? Rawhide? Don't try to understand 'em? Just rope 'em, throw, and brand 'em? Soon we'll be livin' high and wide? My heart's calculatin'? My true love will be waitin'? Be waitin' at the end of my ride? Move 'em on, head 'em up, head 'em up, move 'em on? Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, ride 'em in, let 'em out? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in? Rawhide? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Hyah! Hyah! Rawhide!? Hyah! Pushing cattle up the Sedalia Trail is a thousand miles of aching bones and deep madness.
You lose a lot of men.
Some men never make it.
Sometimes you don't rightly think a man was ever born who could.
Well, men fool you sometimes, especially on a cattle drive.
I ought to know.
My name's Gil Favor, trail boss.
Wake up, kid.
Oh.
A steer just got over that hill.
I didn't see him.
Got to keep your eyes open if you're going to be a good drover.
I'll get him.
Rowdy! Kevin? Rowdy, get Mr.
Favor.
There's a dead man.
I-I was looking for a stray, Mr.
Favor.
Anything on him? Any identification? Nothing.
But look at his forehead.
It's like branding a steer.
Whoever hanged him put their mark on him.
The letter "S.
" Hold a minute, Rivera.
You make something out of this? This is the first time you move through this country? Hey, you knew that when you signed on at Deer Crossing.
I think, Mr.
Favor, you do not need me anymore.
What's the letter "S" got to do with your running out? There is a man named Sanchez.
You would not have heard of him.
What you call a puma one who strikes at night? Silent, deadly.
Marauder? S?.
He is a marauder, this Sanchez.
I know these things because it is well known by those who travel through this country.
Sanchez- he kills and tortures to get what he wants.
Gold, cattle, women sometimes children.
None of it is nice.
They say when a man double-cross him that is what happen to him.
That is never nice to look on, Mr.
Favor.
Let's move on.
You and Roy get some rocks over that body- big ones.
Me, Mr.
Favor? Let's get back to the herd.
We've wasted enough time already.
Say, boss, um why don't you let me stay, huh? Give him room to learn in.
Yeah, but it's you, know, it's his first time out, and Then don't rob him of his chance to stand on his own legs.
Somebody's got to do it.
Afraid of something? No.
No, sir.
We're almost finished.
One more bag.
Rivera aren't we going to say something over the grave? What do you want to say? Well, when a man dies, you usually say something, don't you? Maybe you want to say something because you're scared.
This the first time you ever see anything like this, boy? Sort of.
This, uh, Sanchez- you think he's still around? I mean, do you think he's going to give us any trouble? Quien sabe? Sanchez can give anybody trouble.
Yeah.
Rest in peace, mister.
What do you want? Nothing.
Just getting some more rocks.
Will you stop looking back.
They haven't caught up yet, have they? You watch out for the cattle as much as you watch out for Evans and we'll get done.
I'm not wet nursing him, Boss.
You're not? I-I just figured he was scared.
You know, hearing about Sanchez back there.
No one else was.
Well, now, just because you weren't I've been meaning to ask you- how come you weren't scared back there? You know, we're moving a lot of beef here now.
You learn after awhile, you don't scare men any more than you scare cattle.
Not if you want to keep them moving in a straight line.
Like comin' home, ain't it? Hyah.
Hyah.
How'd you make out? Just fine, Mr.
Rowdy.
How many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me mister? Yes, sir.
I guess I'll learn one of these days.
Like herding cattle.
Say, I want to ask you something.
What? What is this stuff, Rowdy? Where'd you get this? Back where we buried that dead man this morning.
Why? You don't want to go picking this.
This is coyote weed.
This will kill you and cattle both.
Don't let Mr.
Favor catch you with this, understand? Hey, Rowdy.
Get on that drag.
It's falling off.
All right.
Great.
You see them riders? They're all around us.
I just saw four more of them back past the point about a mile.
They bother you, Pete? I haven't forgotten the story Rivera told us this morning about Sanchez.
You start forgetting it then.
You'd better talk to the men.
Who told them to slow up? They're not slowing up, they're stopping.
They want to know what we're headed into.
What's going on here? Who are the men in the hills? Is that why you stopped the herd? Are you getting edgy because somebody is up in the hills? There's another bunch.
Look, Mr.
Favor, we got a right to know what's facing us- what's ahead of us.
We all know what Sanchez did to that man hanging There's a bandit out there with a gang of cutthroats.
His name is Sanchez, and we've seen ten of his men.
Maybe there's a lot more than that.
Looks like they're after us- waiting for a chance to take us.
You know what he's capable of doing to a man.
Hanging him upside down, burnin', brandin' him.
He wanted you to see that.
Wants to scare you off, make you run like rabbits.
I hired you to drive cattle.
You want to live forever, you should have stayed where you come from.
Now, you know what's out there- what's ahead of us.
We can't attack them- they're all around us.
We have to wait for them to make the first move.
Now, if anybody wants to go back, let him speak up now.
I'll pay off any man that wants to leave.
All right, who's leaving? Nobody said anything about leaving, Mr.
Favor.
Well, then get back to work.
Well, what about you? Hyah.
They don't look so scared anymore.
There's nothing wrong in them being scared.
You just got to keep them from thinking about it.
Hey, Rivera, I've been meaning to ask you somethin'.
Si? Why'd you pick that coyote weed this morning back at the grave? You know how poisonous they were, didn't you? Mr.
Favor's sure going to raise ned he knew you did that.
You tell him this? No.
I'm just asking you.
It is the custom of the Mexican to use the weed for taking infection from a wound.
I have a bad arm from a horn scratch.
Hey, that's pretty good.
That's somethin' I didn't know.
Coyote weed for poultice, huh? I'll sure remember that, Rivera.
You'll make a trail drover yet, boy.
Yeah.
Hyah! You hurt, boy? No, I'm all right.
Ooh! I guess my saddle slipped, Mr.
Favor.
When was the last time you checked that saddle? You got a loose cinch.
Now, you want to stay alive, you keep your gear in shape.
I fell, too, boss.
Not 'cause you were careless.
Get back to the herd.
Yes, sir.
I guess you just got a bad twist.
You stay off that leg for a couple of days.
Yes, sir.
I think we ought to get goin'.
Hand him over to Wishbone.
Right.
You all right? Yeah.
I don't want to work for the cook.
You hear anybody ask for you? You do what Mr.
Favor says.
You tryin' to get out of work, Roy? I've been on trails before when they tried this.
Greenhorns think they can get away with anything.
Why'd you loosen your cinch, boy? I didn't.
I didn't do it.
Easy, Roy.
They're just ridin' you.
You heard Mr.
Favor.
Get him started.
Would you let me do this my way? This is my department! I can handle cattle, Rowdy.
You do what the boss said.
You can start out by helpin' my louse, and he needs help.
Mushy, I got a helper for you.
Uh, the spuds we cut thick, and the meat we cut thin.
Climb aboard.
Don't feel bad.
Every fella gets a spill sooner or later.
Ha! Ain't that music romantic? You romance that gear away before this storm hits, or I'll clobber the both of you! Everything all right out there, Mr.
Favor? Except for this lightning.
Same as it was yesterday and the day before that.
You still got something on your mind, Finch? No.
Have you seen anything of them men we saw this morning? If they're still out there, they're no closer than they were.
And that's what I've been tellin' 'em, Mr.
Favor.
We ain't seen a lick of 'em since noon.
Here that, Roy? Now, you tell us you didn't fall out of that saddle 'cause you was afraid of that bandit Sanchez.
You stop telling those stories, Rivera.
You could have been wrong about what you told us, too, Rivera.
If it was Sanchez, Roy, maybe he ain't after cattle.
Maybe he's after you.
Sanchez didn't scare me.
You know that, Finch.
Well, just don't you louse up Wishbone's cooking.
He's doing all right for me.
You guys lay off him.
Yeah, but listen, if you don't quit putting chili pepper in the grub, we're going to twist your leg and give Roy your job.
Mr.
Favor, the herd's about to go.
All right, let's get out and calm 'em down.
There he goes in the rocks! Hold it, Pete.
You want to get one Mexican or lose 3,000 head of cattle? Mount up! Everybody up! What's Sanchez going to do, Mr.
Favor? We're not going to find out here.
Let's roll before that herd goes.
And watch yourselves! Mr.
Favor! You got to let me go, too.
You're in no condition to ride.
Stay here.
Hyah! Come on! Come on! Get in there! Get up! Get up! Come on.
Get it in there! Roy, get away from 'em! Get back! He'll manage.
Do your own job! They're running him into those rocks.
I said let him be! Help! Help! Somebody help! Help! Help! Help! We can't hold 'em any longer up front, boss.
Help! Help! You're letting that boy die.
We got these cattle to keep.
Whoa! Look at him! Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed by thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom and the power and glory forever.
Amen.
Get his things together, Rowdy.
Send 'em back to his folks.
I think you better do that job, Mr.
Favor.
And while you're at it, why don't you write his folks a letter about how you let their boy die? That's enough, Rowdy.
No, it's not enough.
You let a man die without even trying to help him.
It was either him or the herd.
A man can be replaced.
A herd can't.
I did what I had to.
Sweet essence of jasmine! How much chili powder you got in this, Wishbone? I just sprinkle it in dainty to put some muscle on you hoodoo wranglers.
Oh, rush it up, Wishbone.
Quit beating your gums.
I saw you with that biscuit, now, Pete.
You'll get yours.
Move along.
Next man.
Everything all right? Everything's all right.
Something's still eating at you.
That's right.
I thought we cleared up our problem this morning.
Well, that's where you're wrong.
Nothing's been cleared up.
Wishbone, what in Sam Hill you got in this stew?! My horse'd make better eating than this.
What have you been doing, washing your clothes in it? I never tasted chili pepper bitter like this here.
I'm telling you jaspers right now, shut up! You hear me?! I should think you'd be used to their griping by now.
Well, how come they're so almighty preachy all of sudden? The sight of a man hanging a couple of days ago got you nervous, huh? Or maybe the thought of them cutthroats out in the hills has got your bellies upset.
I got a feeling it's going to taste real, real good.
I'll taste it myself.
It's even worse than usual.
What's wrong? I don't know.
Wormy maybe.
I'll skin the next man that says I can't cook.
I already finished, Mr.
Wishbone.
It was good as ever.
You like it, huh? Best stew I ever cooked.
Then eat it.
Anybody want any more? One helping was enough.
Gracias.
All right, off and on.
Let's butt those saddles.
Let's go! Ben? I'm sick, Mr.
Favor.
Hey, Mr.
Favor, something's wrong.
Prescott just passed out.
What do you think's wrong with him? They're sick as dogs, that's what's wrong.
I can hardly see, Mr.
Favor.
Kyle here got the cramps.
Feeling dull all kind of stupored out.
Mr.
Favor, what's wrong with us? I'm not sure.
You ain't sure of what? It was that stew of yours, Wishbone! You been eating my stew for a long time, and you never got sick yet.
None of you have.
They ain't sick.
How close are we to water, Pete? About two miles past that rise.
All right, get on you feet.
We can hardly stand, Mr.
Favor.
You'll stand.
You'll drive that herd to water and bed 'em down.
Let's go! Come on, let's hit those saddles.
Move! You look worried about something more than them just being sick.
How you feeling, Wish? Herd all right? The herd? Sure the herd's all right.
Pete, Scarlet and Quince are handling them.
I don't get these men being sick.
From what? That all you got to do? Ask questions? Well, at least you made sure the herd got to water.
What else did you put in that stew last night, Wishbone? Just what you looked at.
Salt, pepper, some ketchup, little bit of clove, some chili pepper Chili pepper? There's no chili pepper in the wagon.
Where'd you put it? I used up the last of it, threw away the can.
They're getting worse, Mr.
Favor.
They ain't, they ain't just ordinary sick.
Prescott, he's still unconscious.
Why were you going through the food? There's something wrong and you know it.
You've been poisoned.
Poison? That was you and your old, lousy chili pepper.
It wasn't the chili pepper.
It was coyote weed.
How do you know? I've seen it before.
You got all the symptoms.
A man don't eat coyote weed, cattle eat it.
They're not sick.
You are.
We ain't gone loco yet.
Who could feed us coyote weed? I don't know, but somebody managed to slip it into your food.
Well, how come they got nothing? Or Quince, or Scarlet? You pulling a joke on us? You blaming me, I'll bust your head, Finch.
Nobody was playing a joke.
Some of you just couldn't swallow the food, some of you could.
Now stand up.
I'm going to search every one of you to see if you've carrying any of that stuff in your pockets.
And I'll search your saddle bags.
You blaming someone here? I'm not blaming anyone, yet.
I will get some more water.
Well, why would anybody here want to poison us? For what? We ain't got nothing.
We got 3,000 head of cattle.
Somebody wants them and wants us dead before they take them.
But who? Who do you think? Sanchez.
You think it was Sanchez, Mr.
Favor? Sending someone in here to kill us? Rowdy.
Get their saddlebags, all of them.
Empty your pockets.
Rivera? What are you doing here? I thought you were going after water.
He said to get the saddlebags.
That boy who was killed yesterday, Evans he showed me some coyote weed that he picked the day you and he buried that man.
He did? Yeah.
Now Evans is dead.
He couldn't poison anybody.
But you could have picked the weed the same day.
Who are you, mister? All right.
He's the one, Mr.
Favor.
That's the one that poisoned the men.
There's your lousy coyote weed.
Hold it! Let him go.
Break it up.
Come on, get off of him.
I'll handle him.
Get up.
How long we got before Sanchez comes in? I cannot tell you what I do not know.
Burn it out of him! How long we got? Even if we knew, we can't fight Sanchez.
Look at us.
He ain't here yet.
He doesn't know what shape we're in, not as long as we have him.
Tie him up.
Mr.
Favor.
Over there.
They're still out there.
All right, shut up.
You going to let all the men die for your precious herd, Mr.
Favor? How long do you think it's going to be? And who says it's going to be? Favor, Prescott's dead.
All right The law won't hang you Sanchez style, upside down and burning, but you'll hang, boy.
You'll hang good.
They're all around us, boss.
We're not moving when we should be moving, we're in trouble.
They're just waiting for us to drop.
Wishbone, you said you knew doctoring.
Well, do some.
I'm working on it.
What do you mean, you're working on it? You ain't as sick as I am.
You're going to have to go get it.
I told you I would, Mr.
Wishbone.
Now, here's what you get- some white horse nettle, some silverleaf nightshade and black henbane.
Now, go on.
What's Mushy up to? I'm working on a counter poison for it, Mr.
Favor.
We ain't taking nothing of yours, Wishbone.
It's a cure for coyote weed poisoning.
Now, if they want to get well, you make them take it.
They'll take it.
Rowdy, go pick up five horses.
Get them.
You, you and you.
Get on your feet.
You're moving around camp, you two are riding.
And you're sitting straight in the saddle.
Not going to know we're sick in here.
That goes for all of you.
Take them out to the herd.
Finch, you go along with them.
How long do you think you'll fool Sanchez out there? How long? Maybe an hour? Maybe two? And if you kill me, it won't help.
Sanchez will come.
The man you found hanged and burned- it was a gringo afraid to do this thing I have done.
But Sanchez knows I wouldn't fail.
He knows.
How's only six men going to hold Sanchez off? Come and get it, time for chow! Come and get it, hyah! Start laughing.
Come on.
Time for chow, come and get it! How's that witch's brew coming, Wishbone? It's coming.
Needs a little more henbane.
All right, here it is, all made up.
Now it might make them sicker first, but it'll get them well.
I seen it work.
All right, sit up.
Huh? Oh, no, I don't want any of that stuff.
Sit up and shut up.
I ain't no better, Mr.
Favor! Let's get out of here and get some help! Let Sanchez have the cattle! I got to find somebody that'll get me well! And Sanchez will cut your throat before you've gone half a mile! But it's better than dying here like this! Get on your horse! It's time to relieve Pete! You, too, Porter.
Scarlet, Quince.
No sign of Sanchez since sundown.
Time.
We gamble for time to get the men back on their feet.
When he comes in, maybe we'll have half a chance anyway.
Well, I hope you feel you're flush.
Well, I guess the poison finally got to him.
I saw him taking Wishbone's medicine.
No, he kept spitting it out.
Think they saw them vultures? I mean, to know that one of us has sickened and died? Afraid so.
We're not so sick we can't get this cattle moving.
Too late.
We run out of time when Porter died out there.
Now Sanchez knows what shape we're in.
Get on your feet.
Get up.
You're going to stumble out to that water hole and drop like the poison dropped you.
When you're full, stay there.
If you want to live, this is what chance you have left.
When they come, wait till they're ten yards from you.
Then open up.
Start moving.
Smile.
Kind of like old Charlie Marcos told me down in Abilene once: "When you're losing, smile.
Gets the other fellow nervous.
" Just a target.
Just something.
Give 'em time.
They'll kill him.
We better get out there.
Get down and stay in your places.
You're letting him die out there, Rowdy.
Let's go.
You'll do what I tell you.
First man that makes a move, I'll shoot him.
We lost Grady.
Someone take care of him.
We lost Mr.
Favor.
You let him die, Rowdy.
We could have saved him and you wouldn't even try.
He was your friend, Rowdy.
Why'd you let him die? Look, I had a choice and I took it.
It was either him or us.
We're 20 men and we got a herd to get through.
I did what I had to do.
Mr.
Favor! Oh, hallelujah.
Oh glad you made it, boss.
You all right? Sure missed a good fight.
You said you didn't care, Rowdy.
Someday you're going to find out a man's better than cattle.
Wishbone, looks like your medicine did some good.
Well, they ain't all right yet, but they will be.
If you're well enough to stand, you're well enough to ride.
Get on back to camp.
I'm, uh, sure glad you made it, boss.
They didn't like the idea of you leaving me out there, did they? No.
You did a good job, Rowdy.
What I had to do.
Well, don't just stand there.
Get on back to work.
I said get moving! Head 'em up, move 'em out! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin'? Keep rollin', rollin', rollin'? Though the streams are swollen? Keep them dogies rollin'? Rawhide? Through rain and wind and weather? Hell-bent for leather? Wishin' my gal was by my side? All the things I'm missin'? Good vittles, love and kissin'? Are waiting at the end of my ride? Move 'em on, head 'em up, head 'em up, move 'em on? Move 'em on, head 'em up, rawhide? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in, ride 'em in, let 'em out? Cut 'em out, ride 'em in? Rawhide? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Hyah! Hyah! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin', rollin'? Hyah! ?Rollin', rollin', rollin'? Captioned by access.
