Reverie (2018) s01e04 Episode Script

Blue Is the Coldest Color

1 Reverie: a virtual reality program where the impossible becomes possible.
Anything you desire, you can find here.
But sometimes, people get lost, caught between fantasy and reality.
That's where she comes in.
Her name is Mara Kint.
Her job: find the lost ones and bring them home.
And maybe, by saving them, she just might find a way to save herself.
[sweeping orchestral music.]
Previously on "Reverie" Have you noticed anything unusual since the BCI was implanted? Hallucinations? [tense tones.]
We call it derealization.
Aunt Mara, you're here for a reason.
This isn't real.
This is not real.
Oh [distressed breathing.]
- [car horn honks.]
- No [both grunt, panting.]
I never left.
I never left.
Are you okay? Anything broken? Mara? - Are you all right? - Yes.
How'd you how'd you know my name? That is, like, the 15th question you should be asking me.
My name is Hill, and I know why you're standing in the middle of the street.
We should talk, but first, I've gotta get something to eat.
I'm well, I'm starving, so Oh yes I'm the great pretender Here you go, guys.
You said your name is Hill? Oliver Hill.
I started Onira-Tech.
No, Alexis Barrett started Onira-Tech.
That's what she wants you to think.
We did it together.
Did she tell you the BCI was her idea? - She didn't say it wasn't.
- Mm.
It's a brain-computer interface.
That's two things, right? Alexis was the computer.
And you were the brain? I flatter myself.
[lighter clicking.]
Oliver, are you on psychiatric medication? Why would you say that? Because I've dealt with people who are.
I know the signs.
You're sharp.
[chuckles.]
No.
I don't take meds, anymore.
They didn't help, despite what Paul told you.
How do you know what Paul told me? Well, full disclosure, I've been keeping tabs on you since I heard they were putting someone new in Reverie 2.
0.
Why? Because before you came along, I was the person who spent the most time in 2.
0.
That's why I know you're in danger.
What kind of danger? The kind you're most afraid of: losing your mind.
I know what you're seeing.
I know what's happening to you, because it's been happening to me.
[softly.]
Derealization? Yeah, I wish I could say it gets better.
I really do.
Oliver, I I just hallucinated a house.
I don't think it can get much worse.
How certain are you that you're sitting in this diner right now? That that cup of coffee is real? That I'm real? Now, imagine what happened tonight happens again tomorrow, and for the next 100 days after that, and there is no cure.
I burn myself sometimes, when I'm not sure if I'm really here.
Now, the endgame of 2.
0 is to roll it out, right? They're projecting 100 million users in the first five years.
Think about that.
Think about all those people all over the world condemned to a sort of waking dream.
Why why why why are you telling me this? 'Cause you're the only person who can help me stop it.
I need an ally inside of Onira-Tech.
They won't let me near the place.
Someone Okay, listen.
Listen, listen.
I I'm very grateful for what you did tonight, I really am.
It's late.
I have to go.
Mara Mara, wait.
[solemn music.]
- Mara, wait! - [groans.]
Look, I was a founding partner of Onira-Tech.
Have you ever heard them mention my name? Ever heard them say anything about me? Why do you think that is? They wanna pretend I don't exist, 'cause they don't wanna hear what I have to say about 2.
0.
I know Charlie Ventana.
He would never put anybody in danger, - not if he could help it - Except that he did! Look, I know this is a lot to absorb, so just think about it.
Okay? And whatever you do, don't tell them that you talked to me, or about what happened tonight.
They'll just say I'm lying, or that I'm insane.
But you know the truth.
We are not crazy.
- [elevator bell dings.]
- Everyone, please turn in your ID before reporting to your supervisors.
You can get new IDs from the security office later today.
Not you, Mara.
Charlie's waiting for ya.
Am I in trouble? Today, we're all in trouble.
Mara - What's going on? - There's been a breach.
We've been robbed.
The BCI team was cataloguing inventory last night and discovered one missing.
Looks like it was stolen four to six weeks ago.
Also, a tablet, an injector: the full set.
One of our people must have taken it.
Did you get any sleep last night? - Tons.
- Hm.
We make it easy as possible to get a BCI, right? "Build the market.
" That's our mantra.
Okay, so then, if it's so easy to get, why would somebody steal one? [tense music.]
- [knocking on door.]
- Glenn? It's Quincy.
Hey, little guy.
The mailman left this by the fountain.
I knew it'd be hard for you to get, so Mm, thanks.
You didn't have to do that.
- Anything good? - I don't know.
You you wanna open it? - Really? - Yeah.
[chuckles.]
Roberto Clemente? 1966? Is that good? If it's real.
Is it real? Quincy, I can hear you from across the courtyard.
- Hi, Glenn.
- Roberto Clemente, 1966.
Come on, bud.
Doctor's waiting.
Only one shot today.
I promise.
Keep it.
- Glenn - Really? Yeah, no, no, no, you can you can, uh, read the stats on the back when you're getting your shot.
It'll distract you.
Thanks.
Thank you.
And I-I know it's hard, but if you ever wanna come over we'd love that.
I'm working on it.
Come on, bud.
Apertus.
[chirps, whirs.]
[gasps.]
[distant buzzing.]
[rapid blaring.]
[truck beeping.]
[gasping.]
[truck revs, beeps.]
[beeping modulates.]
[screams.]
"Onira-Tech co-founders Oliver Hill and Alexis Barrett.
" Hey, Dylan? Is there any information on Oliver Hill? Is there, like, a company bio or something? Oliver Hill is a neuroscientist and was a founding partner of Onira-Tech.
- He left the company 19 months ago.
- What else? That's all the information I'm authorized to disclose.
[sighs.]
Well, that's not suspicious at all, thanks.
Hey.
We got a lead.
There's somebody in Reverie using an unregistered BCI.
There's only one of those, so it's gotta be our thief.
I need you to go in after him right now, get an ID, find out who he is, what he's doing.
- Wh - There something wrong? 'Cause this has to happen right now.
No I'm yeah, I'm on it.
[anxious breathing, muttering.]
Apertus.
[chirps, whirs.]
One, two, three, four doors, four Reveries.
Well, you've been busy.
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two Hello? [water rushing.]
Never gets old.
[door opens, closes.]
Oh, okay.
All right, great.
I'll take you over there and show you exactly where everything goes.
Let me just grab my clipboard.
[footsteps running.]
Hey No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no-no.
Parking lot avatars are supposed to stay in the parking lot.
What are you doing here? I was just about to ask you the same thing.
Hey, you.
Ah, damn it! I almost had it.
Now I have to start all over again.
I have two unauthorized personnel in the warehouse.
- Requesting assistance.
- 10-4.
Stay in your spot next time.
If you promise to return the thousands of dollars of stolen technology back to Onira-Tech, you have a deal.
- Exitus.
- [whooshes.]
Wait! - Did you find him? - Yep.
So, what's he doing? I don't think the BCI is the only thing he plans on stealing.
I found him in the loading dock of a company called MRL.
Dylan, what company has those initials? 34 U.
S.
corporations.
Oh, and there were these biohazard symbols on some of the boxes.
How many of those were medical? There's a pharmaceutical company: Medivax Research Laboratories in Huntington Beach.
They develop treatments for respiratory and circulatory diseases.
Why would someone wanna rob them? We found our thief: a BCI tech.
Says he stole the BCI for a buyer he met on a Dark Reverie site.
Oh.
Dark Re Reverie? What's that? Look, there are limits to what you can do in Reverie.
Certain actions that the avatars won't perform.
We program them not to.
Not everyone likes that.
They think there shouldn't be any rules in a virtual space: no moral boundaries.
Some people think it's the best place in the world to let off unhealthy energy.
And some people disagree.
We call what they want the Dark Reverie.
Great.
Our tech met the buyer in one of the online groups.
The buyer gave him $50,000 in Bitcoin for the BCI and the injection.
- Did he get a name? - No.
You need to go back into Reverie and find out everything you can about him.
Charlie Yeah? Why aren't you giving this to the police? Because the police means press and publicity, and those are things I don't need right now.
Is there some kind of secret you're trying to protect? What do you mean? I keep learning about things that nobody even told me.
I didn't know about derealization, until it happened to me.
I didn't know about this Dark Reverie.
Nobody even bothered to tell me that Dylan was Alexis's brother.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, where is this coming from? Who's Oliver Hill? [tense music.]
How do you know that name? I had another episode last night.
I thought I was going to Jamie and Brynn's house.
Why the hell would you go there? I didn't.
It was a derealization.
And then there I was, in the middle of the street, and there was a car, and then Oliver Hill saved my life.
He was following you? You know what, Charlie, that wasn't the first thing that I was worried about.
You haven't been taking medication.
So, you were encouraging the derealization? It was only for a week.
That's why you had the episode last night.
Get back on the program.
It won't happen again.
Oliver says the more I get into Reverie, the worse it'll get.
He doesn't know what he's talking about.
Well, that's funny, because he said the same thing happened to him, and when he tried to warn you about it, you shut him out of the company, the company that he helped you build.
Was he lying about that? It's true, they were partners in the beginning.
- Charlie - Mm.
Oliver's a brilliant guy, but he has problems, problems that started before he got here.
He's unstable.
He said you would try to discredit him.
Come on, Mara.
You talked to the man.
Does he look like somebody who's firing on all cylinders? We had to fire him, get a restraining order, which is why he contacted you.
He can't talk to anyone of us without getting arrested.
He said you were gonna release 2.
0 to the public.
That's years away.
We wouldn't release anything without the proper testing and safeguards.
He's trying to manipulate you, Mara.
Okay.
So I'm fine.
He's dangerous.
That's it? Yes.
You sure Oliver's the one trying to manipulate me? She doesn't believe it.
She doesn't believe it because it's not the truth.
Tell her the truth, and she'll believe it.
[door opens, closes.]
How long have we known each other? Almost ten years.
We've been through some scrapes together.
Yes, we have.
Have I had your back? Always.
So do you really believe that I would bring you here, invite you in, if I thought you could be hurt? Charlie [solemn chuckle.]
Things are going on that I just don't understand.
I mean, what happened last night was big.
Brynn appeared, and said that I was there for a reason.
If you were we'll figure it out.
I still have your back.
By the way I think I found our thief.
There was a fountain in the Reverie, and since MRL is real, I figured that the fountain must be real too.
And since he got the BCI downtown I had Dylan show me images of downtown fountains, until we found this.
- Not bad, huh? - Not bad at all.
Okay, so, let's see This is the angle that I saw in the Reverie, which means he must live There.
Excuse me.
Are you going to see Glenn? - Can I give you some advice? - Sure.
I'm I'm Mara, by the way.
And this is Charlie.
Liz and Quincy.
Say hey, buddy.
Sorry.
Not so talkative today.
Doctor's appointment.
But, uh you need to do something about the handkerchief.
And why is that? [sighs.]
Glenn has some compulsions, things he can't tolerate.
Sunlight.
He never leaves his apartment during the day.
Noise.
Anything blue.
So, if you wanna talk to him, you'll wanna get rid of that.
Hope that helps.
Yes, it does.
Thank you.
Come on, sweetheart.
Bye, buddy.
[knocking on door.]
[door clicks.]
Go away or I'll call the police.
Oh, that's funny, 'cause I was thinking I should call Medivax Research Laboratories and tell them you're about to breach their security.
Or we can both call and see what happens.
We might not if we can work this out.
- I'll talk to you, not him.
- No problem.
- I'll be fine.
- Wait wait I'm a coder.
Freelance.
Uh, please, please, please, please! Don't touch that.
Oh Okay.
"Glenn Maybach.
" Okay.
Hi, Glenn.
I'm Mara.
You think I'm some kind of freak? No, I-I don't.
I think that you have a system, you know, just a way to keep things in order.
When I was little, we had this, um this staircase, and there was no molding on it or anything.
It was very contemporary.
But there were all these cracks where the wall met the steps And I had to count the cracks.
And every time I went up the stairs, it just took me longer and longer to get to the second floor.
- What'd you do? - I spackled the wall.
[laughs.]
[chuckles, murmurs.]
For me, the, um the cracks are everywhere, but, you know, between Amazon and Postmates, there's really never been a better time to be a shut-in with OCD, so You know, Glenn I understand how valuable Reverie is to you.
I really do.
I mean, so many people use it just for that reason, you know, to to do things that you could never normally do in real life.
But why are you using it to rob a drug company? - [knocking on door.]
- Hey, is everything okay? Uh, yeah yeah, Charlie We're good.
Did they develop a new medicine for OCD? I mean, why not just buy it? Uh, no, no, no, no, no.
He can't do that.
Uh uh, I I got this.
Charlie, I got this.
No, don't touch it! I can't clean those prints! - I'm gonna take care of it! - I can't I can't - No, that's not fixing it! - Here, Glenn.
Here here, look.
He's gone.
He's gone.
He's gone, Glenn, he's gone.
Apertus.
Glenn! Problem solved.
He'll come out eventually.
Then we can disable the BCI and turn him over to the police.
Seriously? He he can't go to prison, not with his OCD.
He'll never survive.
You reap what you sow.
[door closes.]
The guy who stole the BCI is in the hospital ward.
Well, that's great.
Isn't it? Yeah, except he's gonna either die in prison, because of his disorder, or he's gonna die in the Reverie, because he knows better than to come out.
So, get him out.
That's what you do.
But you're reluctant because of Oliver Hill? Charlie told me what happened.
Okay.
Seriously, Paul, is Oliver right? Am I am I gonna go crazy? Uh You shouldn't be seeing this privacy of health records and all.
This is baseline neuro data on Alexis, myself, and you.
All normal.
This is us in 2.
0.
Expected variation.
Still normal.
[digital beeping.]
This is abnormal.
This is Oliver Hill: his baseline before he even went into Reverie.
And this this is him in 2.
0.
Oliver was unstable long before he got a BCI.
And he's wrong.
He hasn't spent more time in the program than anyone else.
Since he left, Alexis and I have spent much more time in there, and we're not insane.
Are we? Don't get me wrong 2.
0 can be, uh, a profound experience.
If you have issues, it can find them.
It did for me.
But if finds them.
It doesn't create them.
I wanna believe you.
I [sighs.]
You know what? I'm just I'm just gonna keep doing my work.
[chuckles.]
Right? Because it's good to focus on other people's problems.
It just helps you forget about all your own crap and the - What? - That's it.
That's what Glenn is doing.
[tense music.]
You're welcome.
- [truck beeping.]
- [muttering anxiously.]
[engine revving.]
[beeping continues.]
[engine hisses, chugging.]
Hello, Glenn.
You're not robbing MRL for yourself.
You want something for Quincy.
What's wrong with him? Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Doctor speak for "your lungs suck.
" We don't know why.
And MRL has a treatment? Yes, it's in clinical trials.
They give it out in a lottery.
Quincy didn't get picked.
So because they didn't draw his name out of a hat, or whatever, they're gonna let the nine-year-old die.
So you're gonna steal him a miracle? I want to But I can't make it past the parking lot.
I've spent six weeks hacking into cameras, replicating their layout.
I have their entire security system logistics.
I can do all of that, but I can't go outside.
Then Glenn, it's time to leave.
All I have is a window.
My world is six feet across, six feet high.
She moved in after her husband left.
I watched them every day.
I watched him learn how to walk, go to his first baseball game, his first day of school.
And I watched them, uh, come home from the doctor.
I've watched him get sicker.
And I've watched her fight.
She will never stop fighting for her son.
I've watched their lives, and they've become a part of my life.
They're the best part of my life.
[solemn music.]
So I will not I will not just watch him die.
Maybe you don't have to.
Glenn Maybach's agreed to leave the Reverie.
He'll let us take out the BCI and cooperate with us in any way that we ask.
There's just, uh, one condition.
What's that? We have to help him rob somebody.
- [knocking on door.]
- Come.
I hear you found the BCI thief.
And the person who bought it.
So, why are we talking? Not that I don't enjoy your company, Charlie, but we're both busy people.
Turns out the buyer knows a lot about Dark Reverie.
There's multiple sites on 4chan that we can shut down with his help.
Well, you wanna make a deal with him, be my guest.
It's a little more complicated than that.
Mara wants us to do something for him, and we'll need your help.
[scoffs.]
Do something for someone making illicit Reveries? She makes a pretty compelling case.
Here's how it goes: You pick me up at 5:30 in the morning.
Why 5:30? It's still dark.
I can make it to the car.
- Once the sun's up, forget it.
- Okay.
You drive to the garage above the MRL building, and then wait for me outside.
I take the stairs down to the East Corridor.
- That's this one.
- [door opens.]
I disabled the cameras in here, so I don't have to worry about being seen.
That door leads to the warehouse.
It's locked, but whenever someone opens it, - it stays unlocked for ten seconds.
- Ten, nine, eight - Ten seconds to get from here to there.
- seven, six - Okay, what's so hard about that? - five, four Blue.
Three, two, one.
Okay.
Watch this.
The corridor brings me here.
The drugs are kept in that temperature-controlled room there, accessed by key card only.
- Which the guard has - On her jacket.
There's no AC, so she takes it off and hangs it on the back of her chair.
People come and go through here all the time, and I got a company shirt, so I don't think anyone will notice me.
Get to the desk and get the key card.
Once I got the key card, I can get into the locker and get the medicine.
There's a second door out of the locker into the parking lot.
[harsh whooshing.]
I just have to walk across that, and it's done.
But I can't do that.
Okay.
That's just your brain trying to protect you, but your brain isn't right.
You have to override it.
Um Use this.
Roll it in-between your fingers.
When you're outside, you're feeling the sunlight, you're feeling the wind, distract your brain.
Focus on that.
Yeah? Okay.
[truck beeping.]
[beeping continues.]
You got it.
Good no, just focus on the dice.
Look at the dice.
Good.
Good job.
Nice.
[muttering.]
You got this.
[menacing whoosh.]
[gasping.]
[eerie whooshing.]
No, no, no, no! No.
[sighs.]
Glenn It's just it's too much.
- When you're out there - [groans softly.]
Don't think about what you're doing [chuckles.]
Think about Quincy.
[keys jangling.]
- [door opens.]
- Oliver Charlie.
It's good to see you.
How you doing? Your, uh, angry ex-wife? Your alienated daughter? [chuckles.]
Your loving family? Don't try to make me angry.
Remember what happened last time.
What are you doing here? You harassed Mara Kint.
I saved her and tried to warn her about your precious program.
You knew I'd find out.
As far as I'm concerned, you were just asking for attention.
So I'm here.
- What do you want? - [chuckles.]
I want in.
- I want my company back - It was never your company.
I helped start it.
And you were well-compensated for your time and labor.
Why are you erasing me? [dismayed chuckle.]
Alexis acts like I don't exist.
That Kint woman had never even heard of me.
There are reasons your picture's not on the brochures anymore.
You know what they are.
I made mistakes.
I know it and I accept it.
This program, it Messed me up.
But now I know how to fix it, - so if you'll just let me - Not gonna happen.
Give me another BCI.
Give me access to the Reverie.
I can help you stop this massive disaster - that you're not even - Oliver.
There is no world where you come back to work at Onira-Tech.
Do you understand? [tense music.]
Have you been taking care of yourself? [inhales shakily.]
Don't do that.
Have you been taking your medication Don't do that! Take your meds.
Stay away from Alexis and Mara and me.
I won't tell you again.
[shaky breathing.]
[crickets chirping.]
[distant dog barking.]
- Are you sure about this? - Yeah.
Okay.
[engine turns over.]
[dramatic music.]
[sighs.]
How are you? Scared.
Sick.
That's okay.
Even hardened criminals get scared before a job.
You're lying.
Thank you so much.
Here.
So we can hear each other.
[softly.]
You got this, Glenn.
Okay, where are you? Blue hallway.
No one's coming.
Okay, be patient.
- Just breathe.
- [exhales.]
- [door beeps.]
- Door's unlocked.
Time to hop.
Hold up Glenn, what's happening? Forgot my pen.
- Glenn? - I'm good.
[suppressed sigh.]
[inhales, exhales.]
[door clicks.]
[dark whooshing.]
Good.
Come on, Glenn.
Come on.
You can do it.
One two Good.
Good.
You got this.
Oh, come on.
[engine revs.]
[inhales sharply.]
No.
[intense breathing.]
No, no, no, no, no.
No.
[eerie whooshing.]
[distressed breathing.]
Quincy? Quincy That's right.
Quincy.
Okay, let's do this together.
Now, we're just gonna take a step.
[mutters.]
We're just gonna take a step.
[steady breathing.]
- I did it.
- You did.
- [elated chuckle.]
- Congratulations.
What's going on? Did you really think we were gonna help you commit a felony? I-I don't understand.
Hi, Glenn.
I'm Monica Shaw.
[timidly.]
I This is the CEO of MRL, Richard Brewster.
Pleasure.
- Hi? - Glenn, would you be so kind as to give Mr.
Brewster his drugs back? [Velcro rips.]
When I approached Mr.
Brewster and told him we were using Reverie to test and find weaknesses with security systems, he didn't quite understand, so I offered him a demonstration.
It wasn't easy watching you bypass every one of our security measures.
You practice this in a VR space? - He built your whole facility.
- [chuckles.]
I have to say, I'm as terrified as I am impressed.
But now you know where to make improvements.
Most certainly.
I offered to pay Ms.
Shaw for this service, but she said there was a better way to reward you.
I don't understand.
They're giving Quincy a spot in the trial.
They took him.
They're giving him the medicine.
How? I mean, it well, it's a long story, but basically, they just wanted to help.
We all did.
Glenn [solemn music.]
[crying.]
That's amazing.
Can you w wait here? I-I wanna go tell Quincy.
Let's, uh let's just go tell him together.
[stammering.]
Sure.
I-I mean Of course.
[dark music.]
- Are you Alex? - Sure am.
You really meant what you said? $20,000? Sure did.
You know you can get a BCI for practically nothing? No, I can't.
It's gonna take some time.
Security's pretty tight right now.
That's why I'm talking to you, a security guard.
30,000.
[sighs, stammers.]
What do you want a BCI for? Same as everyone else.
[chuckles.]
Live out my fantasies Get the girl that got away.
[footsteps approaching.]
Hey.
I heard Glenn gave you some info on the Dark Reverie sites.
That's a big win.
Yeah, Charlie seems to think so.
Charlie's always right.
The first time I met Oliver, he talked about how the brain was a time machine.
It could remember the past, be present in the moment, and imagine the future.
I told him my idea for Reverie, how it could turn the brain into a teleportation device.
Between the both of you, that pretty much covers time and space, huh? We fit and really almost from the start.
You were in love.
He was unstable but he was so brilliant and funny.
And it felt like he accepted me completely.
I hadn't felt that way since In a very long time.
Then his paranoia got worse and his mood swings.
We were working on 2.
0 by then, and he blamed his problems on the program.
We had a huge fight about it.
Then, that night, he tried to set my house on fire with some gasoline and that Zippo lighter of his.
Did you have him arrested? No.
Charlie talked to him, fired him, disabled his BCI, and got the restraining order, and paid him enough money to go away At least for a while.
Alexis, I understand why you wanna keep this a secret, but you didn't do anything wrong.
You have nothing to be ashamed of.
He was my partner and the biggest mistake of my life.
I won't be defined by that.
I won't be the idiot tech girl who fell for the psycho bad boy.
The investors? The VCs? They're all looking for a reason to discount me.
I won't give it to them.
I know it's weird, but I'd appreciate it if from now on, we could act like it never happened.
Like what never happened? [chuckles.]
[solemn music.]
