Saving Grace s03e12 Episode Script

Hear The Birds

Look at that.
I seen it 50 times.
I still can't believe it.
- How many times we gotta watch that? - As long as they keep playing it.
- Have you talked to her? - Yesterday for a second.
She said she was gonna stop by tonight.
She's probably with Rhetta, picking out outfits or something.
Uh, I just got harassed by this guy.
- Where is he? - No, no, no.
Not like that.
He works for city hall.
Frank something.
He wants Grace's address so he can get a blessing.
- Where is she? - We thought she was with you.
Okay.
Where's the joke? I know you guys are gonna give Grace shit for this.
Cough it up.
You guys got something planned? - What? - We're just glad she's okay.
Grace wants to tell Geepaw he's in hospice.
I said absolutely not.
It's his life, Paige.
I think he should know when it's about to end.
Just because we brought in hospice doesn't mean that it's the end.
Donovan even said people begin hospice, six months later realize they don't need it, live for years.
If we can just get this indigestion - Coronary heart disease.
- under control, he'll be fine.
He wanted to make sure the owl doesn't get in through his window and he called Grace Ruby Nose Button the other day.
- What does that mean? - It means Grace had a rough day.
I made her leave, go meet her friends.
Uh, she needs to get back to work.
Do you see his brown blanket? The one with turquoise and red? I need to take it home and wash it.
Jimmy and Joe said they're gonna try to come in this weekend.
- Oh.
Did you tell Mom? - Yes.
To stay away.
Knowing Mom, she'll come when he's lucid, get him so upset he has a heart attack.
Hey, Rhetta.
- She hasn't shown up? - No.
I left her a message.
Told her I sent everyone home.
Thought that might bring her out.
- Did you stop at her house? - No answer.
And she's still not answering her phone.
- Same here.
- Think she's okay? She says she just needs to be alone, which I understand.
She called me from a gas station yesterday.
Some guy asked if he could lick her palms.
One of my parishioners wants her to pray for her sick daughter.
It's like that dream I had.
She was healing the sick, raised me from the dead.
- Scotch on the rocks, please.
- Shot of tequila.
- You got it.
- What? - Shot of tequila? - Scotch on the rocks! - All right.
So, is she gonna start back to work tomorrow? - She said she was.
But walking in that office is gonna be tough.
God, please take care of our Grace.
Give her the strength of your love to walk the path that you've set before her.
Let her know that she is not alone, she is never alone.
You are always with her.
Amen.
Cheers.
#So pretty and, oh, so bold # # Got a heart full of gold on a Ionely road # - # She said, "I don't even think that God can save me"# - # Save me # # Am I gaining ground Am I losing face # # Have I lost and found my saving grace # # Thankful for the gift my angels gave me ## What? I'm gonna walk in the office, and the shit's gonna begin.
Angel wings, angel decals angel food cake, angel whatever.
- How bad is it? - It's pretty bad.
I am not ready for this.
- You want to go home? - I need to work.
Well, the whole world knows you have an angel, thanks to Neely.
You can't put that cat back in the bag.
- Yeah.
And then there's that.
- What? Neely's 72-hour psych evaluation is up today.
Means she's gonna be released.
Means, you know, who knows what's gonna happen? And Earl, you know I haven't seen him since before the fall.
So where the hell is he? - I bet he's with Neely.
- And Geepaw's dying.
His heart's getting worse.
He can't have surgery.
He won't survive it.
But now, you know, he won't take his meds.
Yesterday he didn't want to eat.
He won't talk to me.
I mean, he's sick.
You know, he can't talk, but Half the time he doesn't know who I am.
I don't want him to die.
I'm so sorry.
I'm so, so sorry.
We got two bodies floating in Honey Creek.
Possible double homicide.
- What part of Honey Creek? - The part that runs through the property of Kyle MacAIlister.
- Gonna be a lot of press.
- Press isn't gonna get anywhere near that creek.
We should be fine.
Where is she? We just got Anderson Cooper's 14th request for an interview with the Angel Cop.
- Grace gonna do it? - Chief asked her to do one interview.
She gave it to Kendra.
That's all she's gonna do.
I was offered 2,000 bucks for any candid pictures of Grace.
- How much they offering her partner? - Not enough to make me talk.
She's getting letters and e-mails from all around the world.
- "The miracle downtown.
" - Damn right.
What about the angel, huh? You think she's got an angel? I don't know about the angel.
I'd say they both have an angel.
No broken bones, just a few scratches.
No way they could've survived that fall.
People fall out of airplanes.
Parachute doesn't open.
They survive.
Yeah, because of a miracle.
Where's Grace? You're supposed to have eyes on Grace.
- Restroom.
- How's she doing? Not sure today's the best day for the angel stuff.
She's pretty emotional.
Perfect.
- Where's Grace? - She's on her way.
What do we got? Uh, Kyle MacAIlister.
Died with his $700 boots on.
- Have we got an I.
D.
on the female? - Pauline Gabriel.
She was a ranch manager.
Looks like a shotgun blast killed them.
There's a bullet embedded in this tree.
Blew off the bark.
Maybe there was a gunfight.
We've got some blood right here.
It looks like the winner dragged the body into the creek.
Which means we're gonna have to drag the stream.
Man.
Westy Stevenson.
He found the bodies at 5:45 this morning.
- Just before sunrise.
- You do your rounds by four-wheeler? Nah.
Usually horseback, but this morning l I always have a cup of coffee with Pauline around 5:30.
This morning the pot was cold, so I knew something was wrong, went looking for her.
Who's that? - Dwayne Sperry.
Owns 250 acres.
They stop right there.
Boss built a fence so he'd stay on his land, we'd stay on ours.
How's that working out? Last week I had to throw him off the property.
He was acting like a fool.
- What was he upset about? - That time? Boss putting in a new road.
His land, right? Oughta be able to do what he wants.
Guy thinks he's living in the old West.
- Both victims were married.
- Mrs.
MacAIlister's in Arizona.
Pauline lives just over that ridge with her husband, Travis.
Same land she was born on.
Travis Gabriel? Detective Hanadarko.
When was the last time you saw your wife? Saturday morning, two days ago.
Went camping.
Got home this morning after Pauline already left.
Her body was found on the MacAIlister ranch this morning.
Kyle MacAIlister is also dead.
Got another pair of gloves? - What happened? - They were shot.
You go camping alone? No.
With a friend.
I'm gonna need that friend's name.
- What are you looking at? - Nothing.
- Bulletproof vests.
- MacAIlister gave us our vests? Yeah.
He's a philanthropist.
He's also a stone-cold businessman.
He paid two million dollars to lobbyists last year.
Sees himself as T-Boone Pickens's rival in developing wind energy.
- So MacAIlister was gonna turn his land into a wind farm? - If that made him money, yeah.
He's got 143 employees working at his headquarters in Colorado All right.
Let Let's just start with the ranch hand who found the bodies.
Westy Stevenson no record, graduated Colorado State degree in agricultural engineering.
That's one of the beefs against MacAIlister.
- Hired a bunch of kids.
They don't know what they're doing.
- Do they? Ah, they just do it different, think different an eye on conservation.
Small-time ranchers don't like that.
Dwayne Sperry, old-time rancher.
Pain in the ass to his neighbors, his bank and the Canadian County Courthouse where he filed 24 lawsuits against Kyle MacAIlister.
Yeah.
Everything from a water dispute, to noise pollution to indecent exposure.
- Against who? - Westy Stevenson.
Dwayne Sperry was intoxicated when he filed his complaint.
Cops ended up busting him, not Westy who was doing what cowboys do taking a leak against a tree.
MacAIlister's the obvious target.
What about Pauline Gabriel? Her family owns 50 acres.
Borders the east corner of MacAIlister's property.
- He hired her two years ago to run his ranch.
- After he tried to buy her out.
She wouldn't sell.
One of my guys used to work for Pauline.
Said she knows what she's doing.
She's in charge of the books, writes all the checks? All the expenses were cleared by her.
Truck needs to be fixed, anything.
Yeah, Pauline took care of it.
Her husband is Travis Gabriel.
Grace is trying to confirm his alibi.
Already heard rumors about an affair between Pauline and MacAIlister.
Okay.
So that makes her husband and his wife our suspects number one.
How's he doing? He eat any lunch? A little applesauce.
He's sleeping.
He pooped all over himself.
- You have to put him in those diaper things.
- He took them off.
I had to use his last pair of clean pajamas.
I'll pick up some some new ones.
Anything else we need? Maybe a little chocolate pudding.
Okay.
Call me if you need anything else.
Okay.
Hey.
Hey.
What are you doing? Smelling the pocket of my daughter's jeans.
- Why? - It smells like marijuana.
- Mae's smoking pot? - Her pocket smells like pot.
- What are you doing? - Sitting on the stairs.
- You want me to come up? - No.
I rather like it here alone.
Found a gun in the creek.
Interesting.
Colt 45, single action, army.
Colt Peacekeeper, huh? Fired the bullet hit the tree.
Serial number? I have to go.
- What are you doing? - Smoking a cig.
I took away all the angel shit.
- You did? - Yeah.
- Really? - Really.
Perry's in a meeting.
Butch and Bobby just left.
It's cool.
Thanks.
Yeah! Oh! This was worth a 12-story fall.
My next-door neighbor wants you to bless her rosary beads.
Oh, that is a cool picture! All addressed to the Angel Cop! And no broken bones.
- Clay, what do you think of your aunt? - I'm just glad she's okay.
Never knew I could fly, huh? Guys, if you're gonna go talk to Dwayne Sperry, I'd lose the wings and the halo.
Grace, let me know if you need me to tell the press to back off.
Yeah, that was good.
Oh, man.
I'm gonna see Geepaw.
- You want to come? - I got homework to do.
You know anything about Mae smokin' pot? No.
- Rhetta's gonna give her a drug test.
- Nice going, Mrs.
Rodriguez.
- What does that mean? - It means she doesn't trust her own daughter.
Well, is Mae gonna pass? - I don't know.
- Would you pass? I already did.
I had to take one to become an Explorer.
You want me to piss in a bottle? I'll piss in a bottle.
- I don't care.
- Why are you acting like such a jerk? Why are you in my business all the time? People around here don't like you very much, Mr.
Sperry.
People around here are hypocrites.
They don't seem to have the same problems you do with MacAIlister.
Just I'm more vocal than most.
Can't drive into town without passing someone who hated him.
But you're the only person MacAIlister seemed to hate.
We got copies of letters MacAIlister had drafted and delivered by his lawyer's office.
He threatened to get a restraining order if you trespassed on his land.
Right.
"His land.
" Horseshit! He diverted that creek onto his place then hired a surveyor and changed the property line.
Now, you tell me he didn't grease that guy's hand.
You had access to the creek before MacAIlister bought his ranch? Yes.
Ask anybody.
And let me tell you something else.
That man flew in on his private jet left all the decisions to those young kids overgrazed his fields.
He is no rancher.
Just a rich guy pretending to be a cowboy.
Poor Pauline had her hands full.
You knew Pauline Gabriel? Don't believe the crap you hear about her and MacAIlister.
People got nothin' better to do than make up stories.
She was a good person and a good neighbor.
- What about Travis Gabriel? - He's a good person too.
- Happy marriage? - Travis worships the ground she walked on.
Pauline felt the same way about him.
You got a Colt 45 registered in your name.
- Any idea where it is? - I gave it to Pauline.
Didn't want her prowling around the ranch grounds at night without protection.
We're having a hard time reaching that friend you went camping with.
He wanted to stay and fish a couple more days.
I talked to his wife.
She She was surprised, Travis.
- She said you and her husband hadn't been camping in years.
- She's right.
- She said something else.
- He's going in for the kill.
When I told her that Pauline was found with Kyle MacAIlister, she asked if they were naked.
- Get up.
- Your angel buddy's here.
- You want a cup of coffee? - No.
I want to say I'm sorry.
I'm still messed up, but it's different now.
I know God is real.
I know he loves me.
I feel like I can do anything.
Do you feel like that? We have to be careful, Neely.
Why do we have to be careful? Why can't we share God's love with the world? Because the world will think we're insane.
- Not anymore.
- Yeah, they will.
Anderson Cooper wants to interview me.
You can do whatever you want but I want to stay a cop.
I want to stay me.
I don't want to become a freak show.
- Do you understand? - Are you ashamed of Earl? No, I'm not ashamed of Earl.
Um - Have you seen him? - We just got back from Portugal.
I need to talk to him.
Why don't you make an appointment? I see him every morning at 9:30.
I have to go.
Are we ever gonna be able to sit down and talk? You always take off.
Why don't you stick around this time? According to Dwayne Sperry the stream of water used to flow here till MacAIlister diverted it this way.
Water rights belonged to MacAIlister, according to courthouse records.
If you're Dwayne or Travis, and water no longer flows onto your property, you're out of luck.
You gotta get a permit, dig wells.
State limits how much water you can pull out of the ground.
Pauline called Dwayne Sperry eight times in the last four days.
That's not unusual for neighbors.
Colt 45 had no fingerprints on it, five bullets in the cylinder.
So it was fired once, hit the tree? I talked to Mrs.
MacAIlister.
Can't say she was very upset, but her alibi checks out.
She got a face-lift three days ago in Phoenix.
Could've hired somebody to kill them.
Mrs.
MacAIlister called her ranch hand, Westy Stevenson last night from Phoenix at 9:13 p.
m.
- They talked for three minutes.
- They talk quite a bit three or four times a day.
I have some very interesting news.
Pauline Gabriel and Kyle MacAIlister were killed by the same shotgun blast.
It went through Pauline into MacAIlister.
Maybe she stepped in front of MacAIlister to protect him.
Or maybe he stepped in back of Pauline because he's a pussy.
The more I hear about MacAIlister, the more I hate this guy.
He steals land, water and women.
Except Travis Gabriel is positive that his wife wasn't having an affair.
His wife was pregnant.
About six weeks.
Pauline used her credit card at a drugstore yesterday.
She bought one thing.
- You know what it was? - No.
Home pregnancy test.
We were gonna do it tonight.
That's why I came home.
Guess I'm glad I don't know.
You were behind a petition a couple years ago over the water rights.
- What was that about? - MacAIlister moved in, had the property line moved.
Didn't think it was right.
You had nearly every resident in the county on that petition.
And he had money.
Petition denied.
Were things awkward between you and MacAIlister after that? - Not really.
- Do you like your wife working for him? No.
But she needed a job.
- What did you think about him? - Thought the guy was a jerk.
- Are you thirsty? Let's get you some water.
- Leave me alone.
Let it be put on record that I am a captive here.
- Who will feed the horses, I ask you? - We will, Geepaw.
- Champuli! - Hey! - You've been to my land? - Yes.
The grass in the meadow is tall and the creek is rising.
It's beautiful.
The horses got out of the pasture.
A neighbor found one on the county road.
Yeah.
Did you get new pajamas? I'll take his clothes home and wash them.
Did you hear that, Champuli? I heard an owl cry.
I dreamed my father called to me from the west across the river.
He told me he'd come for me in two days.
Two days? His eyes were clear.
He looked straight at me.
Then he started snoring.
He was sleeping more peacefully than I've seen in weeks.
- Maybe he'll eat something tomorrow.
- Yeah.
Nurse said that he might have this last burst of energy, clarity like he's gathering the strength to die.
So if you want to say good-bye, you might want to stop by tomorrow.
So what are you doing with Mae? Oh.
Um Ronnie gave her a drug test and she flunked.
Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
And then she told him where she got the pot.
From Clay.
I'm gonna remain calm.
Then I'm gonna call Doug.
And I'm going to tell Mae that if she continues down this path the side effects are anxiety, depression, loss of motivation rejection of college applications and ultimately living on your parents' couch for the rest of your life.
- How are Mae's parents doing? - When it's about the kids, we're okay.
- And when it's not? - Every day I wanna file for divorce.
And then I pray, and I don't at least not yet.
- He wants to move back in.
- And what do you want? I can't even think about that yet.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Speaking of moving in - Well, Gus is staying at Paige's house.
Dealing with two Pomeranians has got him so twisted up, he doesn't know what hit him.
You know, nothing else in my house I care about.
- So why not let a meth head suicidal woman stay there? - Yeah.
Why not? Neely has two million dollars.
She can stay at a hotel.
Yeah.
Earl said it was time to move on faith, so what the hell.
Yeah.
Well, we gotta find this guy.
It's the only thing that's gonna help him out.
Well, his wife said that he always goes to that same fishing spot.
I appreciate it.
Thanks.
Rangers are gonna help us try to find Travis Gabriel's camping buddy.
Hmm.
I went through Pauline's mileage reports.
She went to George's Hardware twice the day before she died.
Far as I can tell, she didn't buy anything.
- Did Ben do that? - Uh, yeah.
So he's drawing again.
That's great.
Yeah.
Amanda said it's the first time he's drawn anything besides tanks and dead marines.
Neck spiders are always a good sign.
Yeah.
I'm gonna need a couple of days for Geepaw.
- Is there anything I can do? - I don't think so.
What do you think about Travis? I can't figure him out.
- I think he loved his wife.
- Uh, me too.
Uh, he still could've killed her.
You want some coffee? No.
How do you know Earl? I saw you in here with him.
You know Earl? Will you tell him something for me? I want no part of his God.
Any God who'd take the only person I care about I hate 'em both.
Tell him that for me? You hear the birds? How do they know? The faintest of light, and they begin their song.
I've always seen the Choctaw in you more than any of the others.
I want you to be courageous for me.
I will.
I need to show you something.
Excuse me? - Hi.
- Hi.
Grace said I could stay here.
I know.
I brought you some coffee.
- Thanks.
- We haven't formally met.
- My name is Rhetta.
- Neely.
- You checkin' up on me? - No.
Well, kind of.
I wouldn't trust me either.
Grace trusts you.
- Is Earl your angel too? - No.
But I know about him.
- Did Grace tell you? - You'll have to ask Grace what she's told me.
I just came over to see if you needed anything.
You just came over to see if I had set the house on fire.
Only because you do meth and you almost killed my best friend.
Mind if I ask, um what was recommended after your psychiatric evaluation? Therapy, rehab medication, grief counseling new diet, new friends.
Stay off the meth, you can sign me up as a new friend.
Kyle MacAIlister's tough.
That's why he's Kyle MacAIlister.
This is the best job I ever had.
I ain't complaining.
- You worked more for Pauline than MacAIlister day to day? - Right.
How did you like working for a woman? I heard Pauline could be tough too.
Well, she better be, run a ranch this size.
Also, it's 2009, sir.
Working for a woman's not a problem.
Even when your two bosses are having an affair? - Pauline and MacAIlister? No way.
- We're hearing different.
Well, you're hearing wrong.
She may be the only woman MacAIlister ever heard no from, if he had the nerve to even try.
No.
Pauline loved her husband.
- Those two were joined at the hip.
- What about Mrs.
MacAIlister? I didn't know her that well.
She seemed nice.
You didn't know her very well? You talk on the phone every day, couple times every day.
You talked to her the night her husband was killed.
Where were you 9:00 p.
m.
to 4:00 a.
m.
night before last? Bunkhouse.
Went to bed at 9:30, up at 4:30, same as every day.
I got eight other guys tell you the same thing.
Mrs.
MacAIlister and me you're right, sir.
Yes, sir.
We, uh We hooked up a bunch of times.
And Kyle found out about it? He don't care what she does.
They live separate lives.
She told me she got a Colorado stud, I'm her Oklahoma City stud.
- And that's working out for you? - It's working out great.
What happened a month ago? City hall meeting.
Every rancher in the county signed Travis Gabriel's petition.
- Most showed up in person to give MacAIlister hell about it.
- Except Dwayne Sperry.
- Except Dwayne Sperry.
- Pauline and him good friends? Well, Pauline's the only one took up for him.
We all think he's crazy.
Joe and Jimmy are coming in this weekend to see you.
Hmm.
- Where's Leo? - Remember? He brought us coffee this morning.
Mmm, and doughnuts.
And doughnuts.
#I've got sunshine # # On a cloudy day # - # When it's cold outside # - # When it's cold outside # - # I got the month of May # - # Month of May # # I guess you'd say # # What can make me feel this way # - # Geepaw, Geepaw, Geepaw # - # My girl # - # Talkin' 'bout # - # Talking 'bout my girl # # My girl # # I got so much honey # # The bees envy me # # I got the sweetest song # # Than the birds in the trees # # Well, I'll guess you'll say # - # What can make me feel this way # - Are you cold, Geepaw? I want to feel the wind.
- Oh.
- # My girl, my girl # - Look at that beautiful cottonwood.
- # Talkin' 'bout my girl # # My girl # # Ooh, hoo # # Hey, hey, hey # # Hey, hey, hey ## How can anyone see this sky, smell this earth and deny the God that gave us these gifts? Between those two trees bring me back tomorrow.
- Okay.
- Do you understand why, Champuli? I think so.
I want to die on the land that is mine that I give to you now.
- Are you scared? - No.
So many people wait for me.
Tell Daddy I said hi.
And Mary Frances.
When I'm gone, I want you to remember that you are never alone, Champuli.
God is with you.
I'm ready to be free.
Isn't it beautiful? #Oh, oh, oh # I should be so mad at you.
- Leaving weed where Clay can find it.
- I know.
I know.
I could go to jail.
I never smoke it, by the way.
This is only the second time in my life! - Don't tell Grace! - Okay.
Oh, darn.
I didn't get any.
Is it out? I think it's out.
Yeah.
Here.
So Clay is in pretty big trouble, huh? For stealin', not for smokin'.
- He tested clean.
- Really? Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
What did you say to him? I said he shouldn't have been in my bottom dresser drawer anyhow.
And the pot didn't belong to me.
I was keeping it for a friend.
I know.
Lame.
Uh Well, Mae will be waiting an extra year before driver's ed.
Nice.
Um I don't think we should tell Grace about this.
Do you? Mmm.
I don't know what just happened but in my head, a second ago, it made a lot more sense.
Here.
Oh, my God.
It's work.
- I thought you were off today.
- I am.
Oh, my God! I knew it.
I knew it.
I knew it.
I knew it.
Hello? This is Rhetta Rodriguez.
I'm out of the country.
Puerto Rico.
No, only for the weekend.
I'll be back on Monday.
Okay.
Thank you.
- Puerto Rico? - Oh! Oh, God.
- Looks self-inflicted.
- I thought we excluded him.
No, we did.
I just talked to him an hour ago.
Shit! I mean, he thanked me.
Shit.
What the hell? Are you sure, Henry? Am I gonna make the call right here on the spot? No.
But it looks like he put the gun in his mouth to me.
Maybe we were wrong, and he couldn't live with the guilt.
No suicide note.
Whoo! - Found these in Pauline's glove box.
- What are those? - Photos.
- Galvanized pipe.
- How long did you know Travis? - Couple years.
I was hitchhiking through Kentucky.
Rode with him down to Louisiana.
Talked about music.
Bluegrass.
Sounds like a good time.
It was.
I hope he's okay.
Me too.
Something's happening.
It won't be long now.
Look at his legs.
His body is shutting down.
Tomorrow.
He said two days.
I don't think that he's gonna make it to tomorrow, Grace.
Can you help his breathing? He's due for his next morphine shot in two hours.
Give it to him now.
I'm here, Geepaw.
And it's okay, you know? I know it's time.
And I'm gonna be fine.
We're all gonna be fine.
I have everything ready.
Everything you asked for.
I love you so much.
Thank you for giving me so much.
You will be with me always.
Your blood in my veins.
Your love in my heart.
You can't remember what you talked about? I can't remember what Pauline was calling me about.
Think one of my cows had gotten loose.
Or maybe it was the underground culvert you built which diverted water from MacAIlister's creek back onto your land.
Hardware store on State Road.
Six months ago, you placed a big order for galvanized pipe.
- And started digging.
- Pauline figured it out.
That's why she kept calling you.
She wanted to give you a chance to explain yourself.
She probably sympathized with you.
Everybody knew MacAIlister was a jerk.
Pauline wanted to make sure.
She even hired an engineer to check out your water flow from your creek.
She figured out that you turned your pump on three hours a day.
- That's a lot of water you were stealing.
- I didn't consider it stealing! - Can I call my lawyer? - Here.
What do you consider shooting your good friend? An accident.
They were waiting for me.
What were you doing down there? - Making sure nothing looked suspicious.
- What happened? I'm bendin' down to feel the water flow.
Hear voices an argument.
"He's a thief.
" So I turn around.
MacAIlister has a gun.
He shoots at me.
I shoot back.
But then I see Pauline and MacAIlister both on the ground.
- MacAIlister had the gun? - Yeah.
Pauline's gun.
I don't know what happened.
He must've taken it from her.
I don't know.
I know I didn't mean to hurt Pauline.
