Episode 6

1
Jaideb Sen has been shot dead.
Help me, please.
This is my Page One. Exclusive!
Help me, please.
Call an ambulance.
He's bleeding too much.
Ambulance he's bleeding
Jaideb Sen
I dropped ink on it.
It's okay. Happens.
All right, everyone can
surf the internet for a while, yeah.
- Atharva.
- Yes, ma'am?
Make sure that the class
maintains discipline.
- Okay, ma'am.
- All right?
- Yeah.
- Yeah.
Hi, Neel. Surprise!
Look at this. It's our new house!
How is it?
Wanna see your room? Come on.
Hey, Rohan. Look at this.
Jagruti Pathak is a criminal.
It's out in the open.
And that's why I divorced her.
- Moreover, she has had
- Turn the volume down!
- Neel will hear.
- So? He should also know!
There have been many phases,
even after we got married.
She was always a liar
and I won't be surprised
if she's proven to be a criminal.
I've severed all ties with her.
- Mata.
- Yes?
- I've got great news.
- Tell me.
Her husband did a TV interview
and said that he always knew she was
a criminal, and that's why he left her.
Son of a bitch.
He just did that for the publicity.
Pathak's gonna lose her mind
when she finds out.
The Crime Branch said they had 36 calls
between accused number 12,
Chhota Rajan
and accused number 11, Jagruti Pathak.
However, these 36 calls
have mysteriously disappeared
and find no mention in the charge sheet.
JCP Crime Harshvardhan Shroff
famously mentioned these 36 calls
in the press conference held right after
accused Jagruti Pathak's arrest.
Mr. Shroff is joining us
from his Crime Branch office.
Sir, would you please care to explain?
We're awaiting the forensic lab reports.
All your questions will be answered
once they're in.
You see, MCOCA has very stringent rules
for investigation.
We have gone over more than
150 witnesses in this case.
That too, under a microscopic lens.
We want to get the people
who have committed this heinous crime.
Mr. Shroff's actions speak otherwise.
First, there was a delay
in filing the charge sheet.
And when he finally did,
he filed a rather weak one.
Not to mention the pending enquiry
in the EOW case against him.
So, I feel our demand
for a CBI enquiry is justified.
Mr. Acharya, would you like to respond?
There have been seven arrests
in fifteen days.
And a charge sheet has been filed
against 11 out of 12 accused under MCOCA.
Why do we need the CBI?
Mumbai Police has conducted
an impeccable investigation.
What about confessions?
We haven't got any.
- Forget confessions.
- Forget them?
Yes. There will be 12 convictions.
CBI is the only way ahead.
- Oh, no.
- And investigations
Mumbai Police is capable
Gentlemen, I'm gonna ask you
to keep this fight on hold.
Pushkar
Mr. Dalvi writes that the technical
and circumstantial evidence
against Jagruti Pathak
from JCP Shroff's presser
is not mentioned in the charge sheet.
- I want to dig into
- We don't print conspiracy theories here.
In that case, I'll tell my sources
to get me the charge sheet.
We'll have the proof in black and white.
Even Guha has said on national TV
that in spite of all the delays,
the charge sheet is weak
Pushkar, you want to comment
on Guha's agenda?
- Well, it's not really
- Guys!
Come on! We all know
Guha is serving his own agenda.
- And we aren't in that business.
- But aren't we?
Pushing the ruling party's agenda
is our main job.
That's why he's on Imran's seat.
Loyalty, eh?
Guys, do we have a Page One?
Well, actually, Tejas Express
had started yesterday.
It was travelling from Bombay to Goa.
- Many taps, LEDs, mirrors went missing
- That's a Page One because?
Get me a fucking Page One right now.
Out!
Pathak!
Hunger is your worst enemy.
Come on, eat.
What's wrong? Has someone died?
Stop the drama and have your food.
Your sulky face
is making other people sulk!
Truth has no value.
People talk through their hat
on television, and the viewers buy it.
I can't go around telling everyone
that I am, in fact, innocent.
How do I fight? Who do I tell?
Screw the world!
Aren't you audacious enough?
Your family and your son
have been worried sick about you.
You say that you're innocent, and that's
why you're glorifying your struggles?
You're right.
I'm not the only innocent person in here.
There are many others like me.
Suman, for example.
You can't count me as one of those.
I'm here for killing my husband.
I have no regrets.
He'd whore me out because he was helpless.
And I'd let him exploit me
because I was helpless.
I fell out of love with him
the very first time I lay in bed
after it happened.
But all the money I made
by whoring myself out
was eaten up by that fucking pimp!
Scoundrel ate up my share as well.
I changed the sheets,
but I still couldn't sleep.
So I put him to sleep instead.
Now, shake it off and eat your food.
You need to live
to put up a fight.
Come on, eat.
Here you go.
Here.
Do you think distributing pamphlets
will help us?
They're just gonna throw it away.
If we don't defend Jagu, then who will?
Even if they only read a line or two,
they'll know the truth.
Look at this.
Jagu's jewelry.
This is all of her jewelry
that Darshan's family gave her.
You don't need to remortgage your shop.
We'll sell the jewelry
and manage the expenses.
My only issue is that
my daughter didn't get
a good husband or a good father.
Put all the jewelry back in the locker.
I'm here, right?
I have no kids or family to look after.
Jagu is like my daughter,
and she means everything to me.
I'll find Mumbai's best lawyer for her.
We've got to win this case, come what may.
And
a few relatives from Ahmedabad are coming
for Jagu's hearing at their own expense.
There will be lots of people.
It's called people power.
Yes, Father?
Neel tried to run away from school today.
He only did that so he could see you.
And if we don't listen to him,
he'll try to run away again.
Jagu, everyone's fighting for you.
Be it Nana or Neel.
Your mom, your uncle, Imran
You have to be strong for them!
Bhavesh
please don't bring Neel here.
What's going on?
Rambha Ma has started yet another protest.
What does Rambha Ma want?
What is the protest for?
This isn't Rambha Ma's protest.
If that were the case, I'd join too!
Unbelievable.
We sent a report
as well as the pictures
of your cell's leak. But then
One genuine effort can do what
several futile efforts can't.
Sorry.
There was a delay in granting permission
for cell transfer. Otherwise
Next time, I'll take longer too.
I'll call off the protest
after you are transferred.
That's okay. Water.
Put my shoes over there.
Meena, hold him.
Do you know who this is?
- Vidya Chaudhary Bisht.
- Sadhvi Ma.
She surpasses Rambha Ma.
She got Rambha Ma transferred
to the other floor.
Have you ever written
anything nasty about her?
"Accused number 9 of the Jaideb Sen
murder case, Pramod Irani, has appealed"
- Hey! You are accused number
- Number 11.
"Pramod Irani has appealed
to the sessions court
for all the charges
against him to be dismissed."
Do you understand?
Make sure you seek her blessings.
Perhaps that will get you bail.
See the signs from the universe.
You and Irani have been
accused of the same thing.
Both of you have been accused of giving
out Jaideb Sen's identity to the killers.
Tell your lawyer to speed up the process.
If the charges against Irani
are dropped, you'll be in deep trouble.
Irani will walk free,
and you'll bear the brunt of it.
You must fight evil
and pave the way for freedom.
Irani has a lot of contacts
and they're influential.
If you just sit on your hands,
you'll be stuck here forever.
Why are you helping me?
If you light up the path for others,
it brightens your path as well.
I'm helping you today.
You can return the favor in the future.
I wrote a lot about you
after the Kasargaon blasts.
The existence of evil is necessary.
Only then can good triumph over evil.
You're safe here.
- Does that mean you are
- I need your devotion.
I'm not Chaaya Gada.
My approach is nothing like hers.
Today I'm here,
but in five years I'll be in Delhi.
My devotees' allegiance
will take me there.
Last time I didn't tell you everything
about Dada's theory
on the police-underworld nexus.
On the day of Hussain's shootout
at the Dawood Den,
Dada told me twice, once in front
of Shroff and once when we were alone,
that he thought Rajan had nothing
to do with the shooting.
Why would Rajan take the risk of
shooting a lowly driver in Dawood's turf?
Dada suspected that IB was behind it.
Exactly.
IB's plan was to kill
Dawood's brother Kaskar.
Of course, Dawood would react to it.
And then IB would find out
Dawood's current location.
But before that could happen,
somebody warned Kaskar
and the driver got killed instead of him.
Even when IB was planning to kill Dawood
at his daughter's wedding in Dubai,
they hired two of Rajan's shooters
and trained them.
But before they could execute their plan,
the Mumbai Police arrested them
and saved Dawood.
Dada noticed the pattern wherein
Mumbai Police was always saving Dawood.
Dada was in too deep into this nexus.
I think he wanted to do an exposé.
Smoking gun.
Dada went to Europe to meet Mirchi.
God knows why he met Irani.
I think Dada wanted to prove
that Rajan wasn't behind the shootout
and that Mumbai Police
was unnecessarily blaming Rajan.
Then perhaps Irani tipped someone
in the Dawood police nexus
about Dada's exposé.
And that is why Dada was shot,
so that this smoking gun story
never comes out.
I agree it could be Irani.
But Dada met someone else
after he met Irani.
Perhaps he tipped someone off
to confirm the nexus story.
Perhaps someone in the police force
or the ruling party
Maybe they wanted to save themselves,
and they got Dada
Jaideb Sen has been shot dead.
- Please
- This is my Page One.
Ambulance
Bleeding
We need to take her to the hospital.
She's running a high fever.
Jagu, look who's here.
Neel
My baby.
My sweetheart.
I'm really sorry.
Mom, why are you sorry?
I know you are innocent.
How do you know all this?
Mom, I read everything about you.
At first, I was terrified.
But when I read more and more about you,
that's when I knew it was all lies.
I even told Kevin that my mom
wouldn't even kill a cockroach!
You're really smart.
I love you so much, baby.
The house has lit up
ever since he got back.
I saw Mom and Dad smile
after many months.
- Mama
- Yeah, wait.
- What is it?
- It's a surprise.
Open when you are alone, okay?
Promise me that you won't
try to run away from the hostel.
Now that I've seen you, I promise.
- Are you taking care of yourself?
- Yes.
So, Pathak, what have you got today?
- What is it?
- Madam, please
- Hey!
- Madam! My son gave it to me!
- Your son gave it to you?
- Please don't, madam! Madam
Rajan's side chick is a superhero!
- Madam, I'll give you money.
- What will I do with the money?
Madam, please.
How long will you
keep your kid in the dark?
- Madam
- You're fooling your kid.
- Madam!
- Hey!
- Hey, you!
- I will not spare you!
I'll rip you apart!
Don't you dare touch me!
Or else, Sadhvi will lose her mind.
What do you think of yourself?
Let go of me!
Leave me alone!
All hail Sadhvi Ma.
It would be risky to apply for bail
before the forensic reports are filed.
If the bail gets rejected,
you could be in jail until the trial ends.
- It could be years, Jagruti.
- I don't want to wait for the FSL report.
Just like their charge sheet,
their forensic report will also be bogus.
The 1,500-page charge sheet
doesn't mention
the false claims made by JCP Shroff
at the press conference
about the 36 calls I made to Rajan.
I also spoke to co-counsel.
No calls
between Kalia and Rajan either.
Bhavesh, it's all trumped up.
Rajan pinned it on me
because he's trying to save
his right-hand man Irani.
We'll find a lot of clues and loopholes
in the 1,500-page charge sheet,
which I'm very sure about.
But we need a solid defense who
can deliver our narrative to the judge
and convince him that I don't deserve
to be here, even for a minute!
I'll apply for bail.
Come on. Let's do this!
Guess where I found it.
Buried in the floor, under his bed?
Close enough.
In his bank locker.
I had no idea that he had a locker.
This was the only thing in it.
Looks like Jai got the locker
just for this.
Actually, I'm not surprised.
Might have something useful
for his book.
You know,
I'm glad that you took over that.
It's my honor, Shoma.
Any idea what's on the flash drive?
I couldn't bring myself to check.
Read the label.
"Jaidaad."
That's his code for research.
- He was such a weirdo.
- A genius. Often confused with weirdos.
I heard you left your job for her.
Jagruti Pathak.
Might I remind you
that Jai was your protégé too?
I haven't forgotten.
Shoma this investigation
reeks of subterfuge.
She has been trapped.
I know you don't want to talk
about this right now, but
I'm trying to find out
what really happened.
I seek justice not only for her,
but for Sen as well.
Did Sen tell you
what story he was working on
in his last days?
You know Jai, Imran.
He never changed.
He would never discuss work at home.
If he ever blurted something out,
he'd just
Once I remember mentioning Malik.
Something about how
he was so well positioned to be
the next Commissioner of Police.
And Jai just went berserk,
saying we could be bugged,
et cetera, et cetera.
Yeah.
Well, we know now
that he had good reasons to be paranoid.
Call records. Sen's smoking gun.
I think it's Mirchi who gave it to him.
The flash drive is named "Narco Chillies."
Look at the dates of the calls.
Fifth June 2005.
And the date of the Delhi double arrests
is sixth June 2005.
All these calls were made
the night before the arrest.
Back then, Acharya was Commissioner of
Police. He issued the arrests warrants.
Ramesh Malik was the DCP
who made those arrests in Delhi.
If the Dawood-Mumbai Police
nexus theory is true,
both are part of the nexus?
I don't understand.
Malik and Dawood have always been enemies.
It's his life's mission to get Dawood.
I can't believe
he can be part of something
which protects
or works in favor of Dawood.
What if Malik was just following orders?
Perhaps he didn't know the whole story.
Hypothetically, if we say
that the nexus story is true,
then at some point
Malik would have found out.
Then he could have panicked
and tried to cover it all up.
Exactly.
You said Dada looked rattled
after he met someone high-up.
Jagruti also said Dada was rattled
after meeting Malik.
And Shoma said that he had
the same reaction at the mention of Malik.
- So, the other person Dada met was Malik?
- Yes.
So, Sen knew who made these calls to whom.
And all these cops are
working for these underworld dons.
- Hello?
- Neha here.
So, I'm running a story tonight
and I wanted your comment
as the Editor in Chief of Eastern Age,
and as a member of MPA.
Comment on what?
Guha has just released
a statement that
he and the other members of MPA
have withdrawn all demands in Sen's case.
Jagmohan has spoken for all of us.
So, maybe you can comment
on a parallel story?
The recent Karjat land deal
which has come under controversy
due to the violation of CRZ rules.
You know Guha is one of
the investors, right?
Perhaps that has something to do
with his sudden co-operation
with the government?
Pushkar, please wake up.
Asshole.
The number you have called
is currently busy
The forensic lab reports are here.
There's no direct, irrefutable evidence.
I think we should file
for bail in sessions court.
We don't need to
take this to the high court.
But, Jagu, I recommend hiring
Senior Advocate Chintan Vashisht.
Bhavesh, I'm not a film star.
I can't afford him.
I know that, Jagu, but we need
a lawyer that convincingly presents
our side to the judge.
Chintan Vashisht is the one, Jagu.
Let's see
if we can get a loan
against Neel's insurance policy.
Jagu, what Neel needs the most is you.
You need to get out of here
to be with him. That's important!
I'll try.
All hail Lord Krishna!
All hail Lord Krishna!
All hail Lord Krishna!
Come on, hurry up!
Salutations to Lord Krishna!
Advocate Vashisht, proceed.
My Lordship.
Let us begin with the first allegation
against my client.
My client allegedly shared
some crucial information on Jaideb Sen
with Chhota Rajan via email.
Specifically, three things.
Sen's photograph,
his bike registration number,
and his address.
I would like to ask my learned
and well-informed colleague here
does Rajan live in China?
Objection, Your Lordship. Irrelevant.
- No
No, I mean Google is banned in China.
If not, basic information like this
can be attained via Google search.
So, then why did a prominent don
like Chhota Rajan
need my client's help
for such trivial information?
Objection. Irrelevant.
All right, Mr. More.
Let's say that my client
did send this email to Chhota Rajan.
Where is the proof?
There is no mention of it
in the forensics report either.
Did they forget the attachment?
I think not.
Allegedly, there were 36 phone calls
between my client and Rajan.
There's no record of that either.
All of this is making me wonder,
My Lordship
did Mumbai Police make this up?
Is Mumbai Police capable of it?
Have they done this in the past?
- Pure speculation, Your Lordship.
- Exactly!
That's the word I was searching for.
"Speculation." Thanks, Mr. More.
I contend that Mumbai Police
has arrested my client
merely based on speculation.
Tell me one thing.
Is there any evidence against my client
that she has been arrested under MCOCA?
Extra judicial confessions, My Lordship.
Namely, the phone calls made by
accused number 12, Chhota Rajan,
wherein he just mentions my client's name.
That's it.
Mr. More, in that case,
if he happens to mention your name,
- then you too would be jailed!
- Objection. Irrelevant.
It's relevant, and rightly so.
Because their entire case
rests on this one phone call as proof,
which I will prove as painfully
inadequate evidence very soon.
My Lordship, in the seven months
that my client has already spent in jail,
they have not been able to find
a shred of evidence against her
to prove her links to organized crime.
Then, why MCOCA?
They had to resort to MCOCA
so that they could use these
extra judicial confessions
made by Rajan against her.
Because there are provisions of MCOCA
wherein such extra judicial confessions
are admissible in court as proof.
Basically, all they have is one phone call
made by a voice claiming to be Rajan.
- Speculative.
- Claiming to be Chhota Rajan,
an absconding underworld don
with multiple ongoing cases.
My Lordship, on the other hand,
my client has absolutely
no previous criminal record.
She's a person of impeccable character.
She has a commendable career.
She has close links
to family and community.
And that qualifies her for immediate
and unconditional bail.
The state opposes bail
as the accused is a flight risk,
has been charged under MCOCA,
and has resources, My Lordship.
Yeah, MCOCA! A convenient crutch!
Well done, More.
- Well done!
- Advocate Vashisht, you had your turn.
- Please continue.
- Thank you.
- Now, the 36 missing phone calls
- "Missing phone calls!"
- "Missing," you said? Missing?
- The 36 phone calls.
- Please.
- And an email.
- Continue.
- They will be explained at trial.
All the co-accused in this case
are highly wanted criminals.
And accused number 12, Chhota Rajan,
he's the mastermind.
We will get clarity
when Chhota Rajan is arrested
and he's made to depose
before the court, Your Lordship.
- But that doesn't mean
- So, the multiple
investigative agencies have been
trying to arrest Rajan for what?
- Your Lordship, Advocate Vashisht
- The last 15 years
- is interrupting
- So, in the meantime
- Advocate Vashisht, please!
- my client will continue
to remain in jail until such time
as Chhota Rajan is arrested?
Advocate Vashisht, please. Please.
My apologies, My Lordship.
But the state's foolproof strategy,
it got me a little excited.
Well done.
My apologies, again, My Lordship.
I have a stomachache. I can't eat.
I threw up four times.
You're really stressed,
which is why you've lost your appetite.
By the way, what's on all those pages?
Lyrics from Hindi movies?
There are 150 pages
of witness testimonies.
And the rest are the records
of my 12 phones.
I threatened Sen in Marathi via SMS.
What the fuck!
"Don't get smart with me!"
Allegedly, this message was sent
by my client to Sen in Marathi.
How can it be taken as a death threat?
I ask you,
would you be scared for your life if,
say, a fellow judge of yours
sent you an SMS?
"Don't be too smart."
- That's what the message means, right?
- Objection.
- The defense counsel is being
- I thought you'd say, "Speculative."
- Speculative!
- No, he's being disrespectable
- towards the court, sir.
- Everything is speculative!
Your Honor,
accused number 11, Jagruti Pathak,
had fought with the deceased
over a common source,
Farhaan Tauquir, a criminal himself.
And Jagruti Pathak sent this SMS
to Sen in that context.
And it's an adequate proof
of their existing professional rivalry.
Don't get smart with me!
Advocate Vashisht. It's a warning.
My apologies to the court, My Lordship.
And of course to my esteemed,
learned and speculative colleague.
Moving on.
The prosecution claims that my client
made a sudden trip to Kashmir.
This claim is absolute nonsense.
Please refer to article seven.
It is amply clear that Jagruti Pathak
had made her flight bookings
and her hotel bookings well in advance.
To be precise, three months in advance.
And that she had also informed
her superior at her workspace
about her trip via email
two weeks before her trip,
and a whole month before the said murder.
Your Lordship, the official application
for the leave
was submitted 15 days after the holiday.
Hey, well done, More! Very good!
You're being alert.
But it's clear, no?
That she had made her flight
and hotel bookings in advance.
And that she had informed her editor.
What's the problem?
Relax.
Now comes the best part.
The prosecution claims
that my client used
the articles written by Jaideb Sen
to provoke Chhota Rajan
so that Chhota Rajan would murder Sen.
All these articles here
were published by Sen after the flight
and hotel bookings were done.
And they were also published
two weeks after her email to her editor.
I think, My Lordship, basically
the prosecution is trying to prove
that my client can predict the future.
That Sen would write these
negative articles against Chhota Rajan.
"And then I'm gonna provoke
Chhota Rajan to finish off Sen."
"But wait! Let me first
book a holiday in advance
so that when Rajan's men shoot Sen,
I'll be chilling
on a boat house on the Dal Lake."
Your Lordship,
all of this will be cleared with
witness testimonies during the trial.
So, you have a witness
who can show that my client
can predict the future?
Mr. More, could you also ask them
who is gonna win the next World Cup?
Why are you sitting down? Ask them!
Imran!
I just
I wanted to say how sorry I am.
I was wrong.
I finally read Jagruti's charge sheet and
I can't believe how stupid I've been.
I was jealous of her.
I'm resigning from Eastern Age.
No, you're not.
You've now got a chance
to tell the truth.
I heard it was Acharya's office
that tipped off the inquiry
to the Karjat land deal.
- To pressure Guha?
- Well, actually, Guha was a bonus.
Acharya's target was Vishwas Gill.
He was the majority investor
in the Karjat land deal
and also the owner of Swadesh TV.
Why?
Swadesh TV was doing
antinational stories.
- Antinational?
- Sorry, I mean anti-ATS.
Meaning anti Ramesh Malik.
And Guha was the cherry on the cake.
But what's the deal between them?
- Why would Acharya go to such lengths to
- It was Acharya who put Malik on the map.
Handing him the 93 blasts investigation.
He knew Malik would repay his debts,
and he did.
Do you remember
the cricket betting controversy?
Which one?
There's one every year!
The 1999-2000 one.
Rajan's right-hand man, Irani,
he was the bookie.
Irani was arrested, right?
Yeah, and there was talk
that Acharya was involved.
- That Irani was his bookie.
- Acharya and Irani.
- Did they have another connection?
- Well, that was the buzz.
But anyway
Malik was handling
the entire investigation.
And then suddenly
Acharya's name disappeared
from the whole thing.
So, Malik helped Acharya,
and now it's Acharya's turn.
Chhota Rajan.
"What can I do, Manu?
I'm having trouble dealing with things."
"And all this trouble
for that asshole Sen!"
"He wasn't in the right either."
"Sen used to work for my nemesis."
"For Dawood and ISI."
"Pramod was trapped."
"Actually, you see, Jagruti Pathak
told me that Sen writes
nasty things about me."
"She provoked me against him."
Such a coincidence, My Lordship.
My client and Irani are both
co-accused in the same conspiracy,
and it is Chhota Rajan who
leads the cops to my client.
It seems like underworld don Chhota Rajan
wants to serve the police
and society all of a sudden.
If I may, Lordship,
perhaps one of the accused
provided the information
while the other accused confirmed it.
- I mean, it's still part of a conspiracy.
- Really?
- So, you've begun speculating too.
- Exactly what you've been doing, sir.
So, I've influenced you!
Well, forget it.
It will be speculative till Chhota Rajan
is arrested and made to depose.
But when will that be?
All right, let's say that
both my client and Irani
shared information
with the shooters about Sen.
But let us look at some dates.
The permission to trace
prosecution witness number five,
Manoj's number,
was requested two days
before Chhota Rajan made the call.
But wait.
The permission was granted
on the very same day
that Chhota Rajan made the call!
Looks like even Mumbai Police
can predict the future.
They just knew that Rajan was
going to name my client Jagruti.
Extra judicial confession
made by Chhota Rajan
to prosecution witness number eight.
These calls weren't recorded,
nor do we have a transcript.
Witness number eight
- Rizwan Chhibber.
- My Lordship, there's no way to find out
that this man who makes phone calls
and implicates my client
is, in fact, Chhota Rajan
or someone else.
Your Lordship, during the trial,
forensics will prove
that it was Chhota Rajan's voice.
Have you got any proof right now?
You don't. So, please keep quiet.
This man who claims to be Rajan,
he then spoke about why he killed Sen.
The witness asked him
who gave him the information.
Rajan says, "My men gave it to me."
First phone call is over,
this phone call lasted 23 minutes,
My Lordship.
The second call happens the next day.
And please note,
the second call is just
two minutes 42 seconds long.
And here, the man who calls himself Rajan
only mentions Jagruti.
How convenient!
Had Chhota Rajan forgotten
that it was my client, Jagruti,
who had given him Sen's details?
Or did he think that
Jagruti is one of his men?
Or
did someone tell him to say this?
That if he put the blame on someone else,
his man Friday Irani would go free.
- Objection. Speculative.
- Speculative? Yes, it is speculative.
Both calls of Rajan
to prosecution witnesses number five
and number eight
are riddled with coincidence,
leaving a lot of room for speculation.
Room for speculation
means reasonable doubt.
My Lordship,
reasonable doubt about the involvement
of my client Jagruti Pathak
in this murder.
That will be all, My Lordship.
Hey, what's wrong?
Need some water?
Judge Kashyap is handling
your case, right?
He has dealt with
87 MCOCA bail hearings so far.
Only one was granted
to an underage girl.
Only because she was underage.
You don't believe it?
You can ask Salve.
Let me know if you need anything.
My Lordship.
I will now present
my concluding statements.
My client
Jagruti Pathak is many things.
She is a brilliant reporter
who has reported on the biggest crimes.
She is a Deputy Bureau Chief
a post that she has risen to
in a short span of just seven years.
But
she's also a single working woman.
She's a loving mother
to a ten-year-old boy.
She has absolutely no financial support
from her estranged husband.
She is the sole earning member
in her entire family.
And her parents and grandparents
are dependent on her.
And
she is a co-accused in a murder.
My Lordship
no satisfactory evidence
has been presented
to prove her culpability
in the murder of Jaideb Sen
or to prove her links
with organized crime.
The defense on the other hand
has amply demonstrated
that she is a woman of impeccable
standing in her community.
As would be obvious
by the number of people
who arrive here day after day
to express solidarity with her.
Her family, her friends, her colleagues.
My Lordship, she has suffered
for nine months in jail
simply because of procedural delays
and the provisions of MCOCA
that were exploited by the prosecutors.
And to no avail!
They have found
absolutely nothing against her.
She's not a threat to herself
or to society.
Jagruti Pathak was wrongfully arrested,
and Jagruti Pathak
has been wrongfully detained.
At the very least,
she deserves an apology.
And not just that.
She deserves her destroyed life back.
And I am not asking for miracles.
I am asking for justice.
Jagruti Pathak deserves bail.
The defense rests, My Lordship.
We have done our best.
They don't have anything.
But let me be honest with you.
People with far less serious
a charge sheet than yours
their bail has been rejected.
MCOCA, TADA
have stringent laws.
Nothing is certain.
So, sometimes
having too much hope can be as dangerous
as having no hope at all.
Rane madam
Transfer! Yavatmal jail.
Listen up. Sadhvi Ma
takes good care of her devotees.
All hail Sadhvi Ma!
- All hail Sadhvi Ma!
- Go and seek her blessings.
Next!
Bless you.
You'll have a good life here.
Give this to the warden.
Tell her they're my instructions.
RAMBHA MA AND HER DEVOTEES
WILL NOW FAS
Going on a fast satiates
the hunger within you.
Patience triumphs over anger.
Rambha Ma needs to fast.
What are you doing?
- I don't want anything.
- Hey.
Are you out of your mind?
You have devoted yourself to Sadhvi Ma.
I don't want anything.
But why?
Sadhvi wants Chaaya
and her cronies to fast.
Why are you sulking over it?
You have Sadhvi Ma's support, don't you?
Usha Ma, I don't want anybody to starve.
I know what hunger is.
I have lived through it,
and I'll remember it forever.
I can't let that happen to anybody.
I don't care what she wants.
Sadhvi is protecting you.
That's what I thought earlier.
It's the same out there.
Shroff, Devrat
I'm familiar with their power dynamics.
It's just like Sadhvi's.
I thought I could use their egos
to my advantage and get my work done.
I'd get Shroff to give me
exclusive stories.
I used his connections
to meet powerful people and
I started considering myself powerful too.
So, is this atonement
for what you did out there?
When you start believing
that you're capable of anything
and you have great narrative power,
you should know you are wrong.
The truth is completely different.
You have no power whatsoever.
I was blinded by my ambitions.
When Sen was alive,
I wanted to outshine him.
And when he died
I used his death
to get the biggest scoop!
When the situation turned
the tables on me,
I came back to my senses.
Being ambitious wasn't my crime.
Nor did I have anything to do
with Sen's murder.
But I have murdered journalism for sure.
Fuck.
All right.
From now on
I will not regard you
as innocent. Okay?
I don't want anything from anybody.
I'm just keeping this sacred thread.
You have helped me a lot.
Your blessing is all I need.
You often make mistakes when you
heed the advice of ignorant people.
You need to take it easy.
Besides, you haven't got bail yet.
I know for a fact that
there's darkness in this world.
But even a mere oil lamp
can obliterate the darkness.
Thank you for making me feel hopeful.
We tried our best to dig out
all the possible leads, but to no avail.
We left no stone unturned to analyze
and interpret everything diligently.
You see, this isn't the only case. So
All right. Send the materials
over to my place.
Sir.
I'll take a look at it
and speak to the commissioner.
Okay, sir.
- Okay?
- Thank you.
Jai Hind.
- Jagtap.
- Sir?
Good job.
Thank you, sir.
Sir
is your health
Do you wanna bet 1,000 rupees?
Go and pick up the dumbbells.
No way, sir.
I'll be fine, Jagtap. Don't worry.
Take care, sir.
- Jai Hind.
- Jai Hind.
I didn't get it, did I?
You did it.
We did it.
You are going home.
Jagruti Pathak!
You got bail!
You are going home!
Mom!
- How are you?
- I'm good.
My sweetheart is here!
My Jagu! You're back!
Hi, ma'am.
Now that you've got bail,
there are no reporters here.
It's good they aren't here, Uncle.
My family is here, that's all I need.
Thank you, Bhavesh.
Do you still remember how to drive?
You didn't sell the car!
Uncle
Oh, my child!
Let's go.
Jai Shree Krishna.
Dad, stop crying now.
Didn't we talk about it?
Jagu is back home!
It's time to celebrate!
Neel, hurry up, or you'll miss the bus!
Ready for school? Have a good day.
Jai Shree Krishna.
- Hi, Aryan.
- Hi, Auntie.
Where did these calls go? Shroff
Pathak! Pathak! Pathak!
Pathak! Pathak! Pathak! Pathak!
Mom, I'm here.
Calm down.
- Come.
- Imran
I don't think I can go back in there.
- You can, and you will.
- I can't, Imran.
- They all will
- Fuck them!
We are not the ones disgraced here.
- Come on.
- Imran
- I have no words to thank you, Imran.
- Perfect.
I don't want it.
You don't owe anyone anything.
Okay?
And
I did not call you here
to be your pep talk.
I am onto something
and I need you. Research.
You want to work, right?
Imran, you have no idea
how much I need work.
But I don't think
I will be able to start over.
Perfect, again.
Take a look.
Call data records. Whose are they?
Pratap Acharya and Chhota Shakeel.
Look at the date of the calls.
Fifth June 2005.
Back then, Pratap Acharya
was Commissioner of Police.
Why would he talk to Chhota Shakeel
the night before the Delhi double arrests?
Two of Rajan's shooters
were about to assassinate Dawood.
Shakeel tipped off Mumbai Police
to save Dawood.
Would Shakeel make so many calls
to the commissioner just to tip him off?
Look at the numbers.
Shakeel and Acharya were
trying to save Dawood together.
Shakeel found out about IB's plan.
So, he told Acharya to fix it.
Acharya sent Malik to Delhi to arrest
the shooters, and saved Dawood.
Wow!
And how do you have this?
I got it from Sen.
This is why he went to Europe.
I think Mirchi gave it to him.
Perhaps Mirchi wanted to show off
D-Company's hold over the Mumbai Police.
So, did this story get Sen killed?
Sen met Irani to confirm this story.
And turns out
Irani used to be Acharya's bookie.
So, Irani gave up Sen?
Yes, but after meeting Irani,
Sen also met Malik.
I know.
I met Sen outside Malik's cabin.
But really? Ramesh Malik?
See
Ramesh Malik was the DCP
who made the Delhi double arrests.
And Acharya is Malik's mentor.
They have a good relationship.
I think Dada went to Malik.
He took a gamble.
Perhaps he thought everyone knows
that Malik wants to get hold of Dawood.
So, he might help. But
So, it could be Irani who tipped off
Acharya or Malik. Or both.
This was between Mumbai Police and Dawood,
and they didn't want anyone to know.
I think this is what got Dada killed.
If you look closely,
everything is pretty clear.
Pratap Acharya retires and joins BCP.
And BCP's links to Dawood
are well known.
Why me, Imran?
Why was I chosen to take the fall?
I think they needed a scapegoat.
And who better than
a successful female journalist
who has connections
to top cops as well as criminals?
You work for them and help them too.
One of their own
murdering one of their own.
I think they got the exact kind of
distraction they wanted.
Sen was telling me to be careful.
He told me, "Stay out of it."
But I was so full of myself
that I mistook his warning for a threat.
Sen got killed for doing his job.
I might actually survive to tell the tale.
So, is this a piece or a book?
I don't know.
- I just know that it is not
- Fully cooked yet.
Cheers.
"Why me?"
I have still not got this answer.
I had to go through this nightmare.
I had to go through this humiliation.
Maybe the people who wronged me,
they know the answer.
I don't.
I don't know the answer.
Probably, I have healed 80 percent.
But that 20 percent still hurts.
People say, "Forget it. Move on."
It's not just I'm being labelled
as a murderer.
My son is labelled
as the son of a murderer.
He was just, at that time,
eight or nine years old.
My family is labelled
as a family of a murderer.
I have forgiven everyone.
But forget I cannot forget.
That chapter cannot be closed
within me.
I have learned silence
in these twelve years.
So, it's a learning process.
Rajan, what happened?
What did Chhota Shakeel say?
