Sea Patrol (2007) s01e09 Episode Script

Under the Hammer

(Man growls) The King rules! Mmh! Ooh! Aah! Aah! (BIRD CRIES) ET: Alright, Spide? (Sighs) Don't know which one of these is yours.
(Sighs) What happened? They took him.
I couldn't stop them.
"They took him"? Took who? Thor.
(RUBBER CROWN SQUEAKS) As you know, earlier this morning persons unknown boarded this boat and removed our mascot, the mighty Thor.
It's got to be the 'Kingston' boss.
They're still steamed up about us showing 'em up in Kakadu.
'Kingston' left port at first light.
Their commanding officer Dick Curry.
ALL: Spicy Donger.
Lieutenant Commander Richard Curry, Chefo I'm sorry, sir.
who I've spoken to by sat phone denies any knowledge of the events.
The fact remains 'Hammersley' was boarded, which is unacceptable under any circumstances.
Well we're going after them, right, boss? I mean, we've gotta get the Hammer God back.
We'll be casting off as scheduled.
Make ready.
Good one, Spider.
Hey, it could've happened to any of us.
Sorry, guys.
If we don't get that little guy back, we're toast.
It's supposed to be bad luck to lose a mascot.
It IS bad luck.
You mark my words.
Let's go, Spide.
It feels wrong without the little guy out there.
Well, naval security didn't report any incidents last night so it has to have been an inside job.
Steer 295.
Steer 295.
The 'Kingston's got a good two hours head start on us, sir.
Course 295, ma'am.
Very good.
Who said we're going after the 'Kingston' Nav? Right, sir.
Course we're not.
(Men taunt and jeer) MAN: Come on, 'Hammersley'! Who's got the Hammer now? SPIDER: How are we gonna get him back? Sir will just ask nice and polite and they'll send him over on a line.
And if Spicy Donger says no, we storm the boat and tear their heads off.
Buff, look.
(Men laugh derisively) They've got him in hotpants.
They'll pay.
Oh, they'll pay big-time.
Lieutenant Commander Curry, what an unexpected pleasure.
CURRY: As always, Lieutenant Commander Flynn.
I've got that info you're after.
(Men jeer and whistle) BUFFER: Hang on We're not pulling alongside.
Come on.
What the hell?! Righto, get back to work.
Oh, come on, Buff! Look, just let it go, Chefo.
Don't give them the satisfaction.
CURRY: She was making about 10 knots, tracking for Sawu Island.
Master sounded like a friendly chap.
They always do.
Thanks for the heads-up, Richard.
Fair winds.
You too, Mike.
Sir, they were waving Thor right under our nose.
I saw, Nav.
They'll keep.
Replot a course based on 'Kingston's intel.
We're going after the 'Pacific Mariner' Nav.
Yes, sir.
(KNOCK AT DOOR) How did you know the 'Pacific Mariner' would be in the area? Everything has to be somewhere, X.
(Unimpressed) Please.
OK, I didn't.
But I knew our course would cross with 'Kingston's when I rang Spicy Donger this morning.
I didn't want to give him the satisfaction of thinking I was calling explicitly about Thor, especially if he wasn't party to the abduction.
Which he obviously is.
Up to his eyeballs.
Anyway, I asked him to keep an eye out for the 'Pacific Mariner' and bingo! Looks like we can knock Chefo's bad-luck theory on the head.
Maybe.
Maybe not.
X, Carl Davies is a person of interest to the AFP.
So with respect, sir, why aren't we leaving this to them? Because in a few hours, the 'Pacific Mariner' will be out of our territorial waters.
Once they berth in Sawu, Davies can slip away and disappear.
Again, sir, surely that's a matter for the AFP to liaise with the local authorities.
We already know they're onto this guy.
Someone put a bullet through Sam Murray's head.
Yeah, she's a beauty, isn't she? Named her after my very famous home brew.
(Chuckles) That someone is most likely Carl Davies.
If not him, then surely he was a witness to the murder.
It's all connected.
Sam Murray, Carl Davies, Lisa Holmes, Bright Island.
Ursula Morrell.
The 'Pacific Mariner' All roads lead to that boat.
But, sir, boarding an Australian-flagged vessel, I feel obliged to mention It might be irregular but it's perfectly legal.
And if they invite us on board, even better.
I would just feel a lot more comfortable if we notified NAVCOM of our intentions.
The fact that Carl Davies might get away with murder is what makes me feel uncomfortable.
I take full responsibility for this action.
End of conversation, X.
NAV: Captain, sir, request you come to the bridge.
What have we got? Contact right ahead, to the north-east.
Range 10 miles.
(PHONE RINGS) 'Hammersley' Lieutenant Caetano.
Lieutenant, Commander Marshall here.
Put me through to your Charlie Oscar, please.
Yes, sir.
Sir, Commander Marshall.
On speaker, Nav.
Morning, sir.
Oh, Mike.
Listen, uh, Coastwatch have picked up a possible type III to your north-west.
It's an unconfirmed report at this stage, but we'd like you to bias yourself to that area.
Yes, sir.
They've scheduled another flyover ASAP.
That's about six hours from now.
Just treat this as a heads-up.
Yes, sir.
Mike, I, um I believe your mascot's gone AWOL.
Temporarily.
Bad luck to lose your mascot.
Only if you're superstitious.
Yeah, true.
(Chuckles) True.
Good hunting, Mike.
Thanks, sir.
(Chuckles) Sir.
Hold your course, Nav.
But, sir, you've just had Hold your course! (HOLLOW RATTLING) I think it's over here.
(Sighs) Oh, I reckon it's over there.
Spider? Dunno.
I can't tell.
Both? Is your eye alright? It's a stye.
Have you checked for loose gear? Yep, and it's all tighter than a fish's butt.
(METALLIC CLANGING) Maybe it's Thor banging out a message in morse.
Shh, shh, shh! "Help! Get me out of these pink pants!" (Laughs) Keep taking the tablets, Chefo.
Could be air in the hydraulics.
Air would make that noise? Sounds like metal.
Causes a water hammer.
Well could be Thor's hammer.
I still reckon it's him.
Ah Be hard to isolate.
Might have to shut down a few systems.
We'll start with the sewerage.
Anybody who needs to go, go now.
'Pacific Mariner' this is Australian warship on your starboard quarter.
Good morning, sir.
Over.
G'day, this is Rick Gallagher, master of the 'P acific Mariner', How can I help you guys? 'Pacific Mariner' to provide some continuation training for my boarding party, request permission to come aboard.
Over.
I'd love to oblige, guys, but we're on a tight schedule here.
Have to be a negative on that request.
Over.
'Pacific Mariner' totally understand your situation, but we could board you under way to prevent you losing any time.
Over.
'Pacific Mariner' GALLAGHER: Yeah, fair enough.
All in a good cause.
You're welcome aboard.
Over.
Thanks for your cooperation, 'Pacific Mariner' A boarding party will be alongside shortly.
Over.
GALLAGHER: I'll stick the kettle on.
I want you to lead this one, Buff.
Ostensibly for training purposes, but we're looking for Carl Davies, one of the fishermen from Bright Island.
The one with his brains still intact, I assume, sir.
Yeah.
Video as much as you can.
Don't go into any details with the master or crew.
I don't know any details, sir.
Shouldn't be a problem, then.
Make sure you're fully armed.
Take along Spider.
He can help identify Davies.
Aye, sir.
And if we should find this Carl Davies? Make sure you get him on tape and return to 'Hammersley' If he should try anything? Then take all necessary steps to protect yourself and your party.
That's all.
Sir.
By rights I should be leading that boarding party, sir.
I want you here for this one, X.
I can identify Davies.
I'd be an asset.
You've made your position clear on this operation.
I don't want you to feel in any way compromised.
(Sarcastically) Oh, thank you, sir! But having expressed my opinion I will without hesitation implement your orders to the full.
X That boarding party is mine, sir.
(Sighs) (Sighs) So, Nav, what's the story? 'Kingston's got our little guy.
Oh, it's not my call, Chefo.
(Sniffs) Oh, this is off.
No, it can't be.
It's got chunks in it.
The fridge is dead.
I've got more in the cold room below.
I'll have it black.
It's fine.
See, the fridge was working perfectly until they took Thor.
First the weird noises, now this.
(Scoffs) Our bad luck's just getting started.
Mark my words.
It's probably just something simple.
Yeah, it is.
We've gotta get Thor back.
I'll have a look.
(Chuckles) Alright.
I'll catch you later.
Alright.
What? You and the Nav, eh? (Laughs) What? Come on, you know.
(Whistles comically) You know what I mean.
Give me a break, alright? No, look, some of this wiring's so old it's rusting through.
It's starting to short.
So what's she like? Chefo! What? You're engaged.
So? Jen doesn't mind where I get my appetite, just as long as I eat at home.
Now, that is really off.
Oh, says Mr Casanova.
Mate, from the moment Nav came on board, you were bragging about how you were gonna get into her pants.
(Laughs) Right? Is that true? Yeah, that's true, but it's a bit different now.
Bickie with that cuppa, Nav? Nav.
Nav! Nav, please, just just let me explain.
Nav ET, grab the camera.
You're on the boarding party.
Can you get someone else? I need to stay here.
You're coming.
MOVE! Hey, Buffer, there's been a change of plans.
I'll be leading the boarding party.
Dan, return to your duties.
Ma'am.
X it's always a pleasure to serve under you, ma'am.
Let's go.
MEN: Yes, ma'am.
Are you alright, Nav? Oh, yeah.
Kate! Good to see you.
Practice makes perfect, eh? Captain.
Your cooperation is appreciated.
I'd like to address your crew face-to-face on the main deck, please.
OK.
Not a problem.
Is this everyone? It's our full complement.
When I was on this boat I saw a man.
He was Caucasian, about 5'10", stocky build.
So that's what this is all about.
ET, ID'd our man? Hey, you could've just come out and asked Uh, negative, sir.
saved yourself this trouble.
ET, there's someone else on the bridge.
Tell the X now.
Excuse me, X, boss says there's someone up on the bridge.
OK, let's go.
Locked door, X.
What's behind that door? My private quarters.
You're making a mistake.
You lied to me.
You're exceeding my generosity.
Buffer, open the door.
Sir, step aside.
Doctor, would you like to come and join us? Australia's finest would like to have a chat.
I believe you know Dr Morrell.
Good to see you again, Lieutenant.
You might wanna give a wave to our navy boys over there.
You seem to have caught their eye.
You asked to see the crew, Kate.
Dr Morrell is a paying passenger.
She's using us as a taxi.
Island-hopping, counting turtles.
It's breeding season.
Where's Carl Davies? Who? The sailor who I saw on this boat the other day.
Oh, yes.
He shot through.
Merchant sailor, Kate, you know what they're like - always coming and going.
I want a look below.
Find him.
What did he say she was doing? XO: Counting turtles, apparently.
She's there under duress, X.
I know she is.
If she is, she had a chance to alert us with four armed sailors and a warship for protection.
Find her and make her a direct offer of protection.
Sir, aren't we here to look for a possible killer? Buffer and the boys can look for Davies.
Your job, X, is to get Morrell off that boat.
Yeah, but what if she doesn't wanna come? Then Gallagher has something he's holding over her.
You know, sir, there is a possibility she's here doing exactly what she says she's doing.
And there's also the possibility that she's too afraid to ask for help in front of Gallagher.
I'll try and talk to her.
Make sure you get her on her own.
And tell her you're acting on my behalf.
Yes, sir.
Keep me informed.
Charlie 2 standing by.
You heard the boss.
You keep searching for Davies.
I'll try and talk to Dr Morrell.
(CLANGING CONTINUES) What's going on here? ET.
Spider.
Hurt Nav, I'll hurt you.
What? You've been warned.
Kate, I give you my word - the man you are looking for is not on this ship.
If I knew he was a fugitive, of course I would've handed him over to the authorities.
No offence, Rick, but I hope you don't mind if we make doubly sure.
It's your time you're wasting.
And, ma'am, Lieutenant Commander Flynn is offering you the logistical support of the 'Hammersley' to continue your journey.
What exactly does that mean, Kate - "logistical support"? Dr Morrell has paid her passage, it's not a problem for us and she is perfectly happy with the arrangement.
Aren't you, Doctor? What do you mean, "she politely declined"? Thanks, but no, thanks.
Were you alone? Were you able to talk to her alone? Gallagher wouldn't leave us together.
Then her refusal might still be motivated by intimidation and fear.
I guess so.
I just didn't get that impression.
I'm coming over.
Say again, sir.
I'm coming over.
If that's what it takes to get to the bottom of this.
I'll be there as soon as Charge can get the tinnie in the water.
(CLATTERING) What the hell? (CLATTERING CONTINUES) FLYNN: MCR, bridge.
MCR, bridge.
Charge! I'm gonna speak to Charge.
Take the ship, Nav.
Call if you need me.
Roger, sir.
I have the ship.
(ELECTRICAL FIZZING) (ZAP!) Ugh! Charge? (EQUIPMENT WHIRRS) Fire, fire, fire.
Generator room.
Charge! (ALARM BLARES) Charge! (Coughs) Charge! Charge, are you OK? Yeah.
Yeah? Can't wait for the attack party.
We've gotta get this fire out now.
Fuel fire.
CO2.
No powder.
(Coughs) Why does that container have air vents in it? Well spotted, Spide.
X, that top port-side container has ventilation installed.
The last thing you want in the tropics is humidity getting in, unless, of course, someone inside needs to breathe.
Open the container.
Yes, ma'am.
You have no right to do this.
I want you off my ship.
X! Fire! OK, let's go.
Move it, Spider.
It's fuel-based.
MAN: Yes, sir.
Argh! (Screams) MAN: Man on fire! Man on fire! Get us out of here! Get him out of here! Get him in the wardroom.
Charge, we need to get to the seat of the fire.
Fuel from the leaking hoses is feeding it.
I've got to cut the fuel from the generators.
(CLANGING) What the What the hell? (Strains) Charge, cut the fuel! (Strains) I can't see The smoke! Sorry.
(Coughs) What happened? Fire in the generator room.
It's out.
Are you hurt? You shouldn't have come back here without Dr Morrell.
The ship was on fire.
Are we still operational? I don't know.
Regroup on the bridge in 15 minutes.
Sir, I need a word in private.
Give me five minutes.
Come on.
Give us a look.
(Sighs) Buff, you got the wrong end of the pineapple.
Have I? Mate, there is no way I'd ever hurt the Nav.
Come on, mate, you know me.
All charm.
See, the problem with charmers, ET, is you don't know whether they're being straight or whether they're doing a number on you.
Well, I'm being straight.
Then you won't hurt her.
Because if you do, you know what'll happen.
(Scoffs) Buff, you're not her dad.
I'm not old enough to be her dad! What? That's a stupid thing to say.
You like her, don't you? Of course I like her.
She's very good at her job.
No, Buff.
You like her, don't you? No, I don't.
(Half-laughs) Who's not being straight now, Buff? Get back to work, ET.
Alright, Buff.
(Knocks) Sir.
You're going to express your disapproval on the way I've handled this situation? Not the fire, but as for the other, yes, sir.
Very well.
That's your right.
Your determination to find Carl Davies seemed to wane the moment you saw Dr Morrell.
I honestly believe Dr Morrell to be in serious trouble.
I'll be putting a full and frank report in to NAVCOM.
You're welcome to read it.
If you still feel compelled to lodge a separate report, I understand.
I'm sure one report will be plenty.
And as for Dr Morrell, she didn't appear to be ill-treated or in any sort of jeopardy.
I'm sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.
Of course it's what I want to hear.
It's just (Sighs) What about Carl Davies? Any sign of him? There was a container on the deck that appeared to have been altered.
How? Ventilation added.
He could've been inside.
Gallagher was very reluctant to open it.
Then we saw the fire and returned to the ship.
For all we know, he might still be on the 'Pacific Mariner' Yes, sir.
Nav? (Sighs) Go away.
Come on, Nikki.
Please.
What part of 'rack off' don't you understand, Josh? (CLANG!) (Yelps) Are you OK? Please Buff! Please I don't want your help.
(Pants and moans) Let me get you to your cabin, ma'am.
(Clears throat) (Moans) She slipped on some wet stairs.
Swain thinks that it's a sprain, not a break.
She's got ice on it now.
Damage report, sir.
I thought you were told to rest.
Plenty of time to rest when I'm dead, sir.
How are your eyes, sailor? Oh, it was just the smoke.
They're alright.
Good news, sir, is that the damage is pretty much limited to the generator room.
A couple of fuel hoses need to be replaced and one of the electrical systems needs to be rewired.
Looks like it might have caused the spark that set the whole thing off.
Anyway, the boys are cleaning up the mess.
All things considered, we got out of it pretty lightly.
Roger.
X, let NAVCOM know we'll be returning to base for repairs.
Yes, sir.
Sir? The crew are putting it down to more bad luck.
Along with the debacle on the 'Mariner' the galley fridge and everything else that's gone wrong since we sailed without Thor, sir.
I don't think much else could go wrong, Charge.
Yeah.
Let's hope not.
But there is an old navy way of dealing with the, uh situation, sir.
Does it involve anything that I should be at all concerned about? No, sir.
Then make it so, Charge.
(Men holler) What's going on? MAN: Step right up, Spide.
Step right up.
Alright, you scurvy lot, settle down.
It's time to remove the cloud of misery, malevolence and malignancy hanging over this ship.
In other words, time to give the bad luck the sword - or the club.
How? Well may you ask, young Spider.
(Titters) Well may you ask.
We need to appease the god of the seven seas himself.
And who better to sweet-talk old crab features than his trouble and strife? (Men holler) Here she is, the beautiful Mrs Neptune! (Men cheer and applaud) So where's the offering? Offering? (Yells) Neptune demands an offering! Fair enough.
Seaman Webb.
Whoo-hoo Charge? Are you prepared to appease the god of the seven seas with sacrifice? Well I guess so, Charge.
Grab that tray off Chefo.
MAN: Hold on tight, Spide.
Accept this offering, oh, three-pronged hubby.
Please, don't.
Release the 'Hammersley' from this grip of bad luck.
Bon appétit.
No, guys (Men laugh) What was it? Off milk, curried sausages.
Spicy dongers.
(Laughs) OK, I now proclaim this ship free from all mozz, mockers, misadventures, malfunctions, bad luck.
And anyone who thinks otherwise, all the more fool them.
(Men cheer and applaud) (Man whistles) (KNOCK AT DOOR) Yeah? (DOOR OPENS) (Laughs) How did the cleansing go? True to form.
Neptune said OK.
Good.
(Laughs) How's the ankle? (Sighs) It's cold.
It's it's not too bad.
(Giggles) You know, Buff, you didn't need to threaten ET.
I told him not to hurt you.
Buff Now, I want you to know that I respect you both as an officer and as a woman.
I really mean that.
I know you do, Pete.
(Laughs) What? You've never called me Pete before.
Yeah, I have.
No, you haven't.
You're a good friend, Pete.
I know that I can always count on you.
Yes, ma'am, you can.
And I would hate for anything to get in the way of our friendship.
Me too.
You'd better get some rest.
I'll pop in later on.
If you need anything I'll yell.
(Laughs) Thank you.
Maybe he didn't mean what he said about, you know Just boys being boys, big-noting themselves.
(Half-laughs) (DOOR CLOSES) (Sighs) (KNOCK AT DOOR) Yeah? (Gasps) I'm an idiot.
I'm an idiot.
I never, ever wanted to hurt you, Nikki.
I'm Forgive me.
(Sighs) I forgive you.
(Gasps) Great.
Thank you.
But I can never trust you, Josh.
Tr Of cour of course you can trust me, Nikki Please leave.
We've got six months on this boat, right? I'm on the wagon, women-wise, till then.
What? Neither of us wants to get booted off the 'Hammersley' And you don't think I'm serious.
But what if I go cold turkey to prove to you how much I um I care for you? Look, in six months time, we'll probably be in different postings, then we can go public - we can we can do this.
(Clears throat) You'll have no sex for six months? Yeah, that's right, that's right.
No sex, six months.
Just cold showers.
Six months.
I'll think about it.
(KNOCK AT DOOR) You wanted to see me, sir? Yeah, come on in, Charge.
So, we got our mojo back.
For those who thought we'd ever lost it, yes, sir.
Good.
And the knocking on Two Deck, it stopped.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, I guess it has.
Yeah.
They found this rolling in the false bulkhead next to your cabin.
It wouldn't be yours, would it? (Sighs) I haven't had much of a chance to get out on the greens on account of my eye, so I stowed my golf gear there to keep it out of the way.
I guess this one escaped from the bag.
I don't imagine you'll be stowing it there again.
No, sir.
I think we've all had enough sleepless nights.
That eye still causing you grief? I think the smoke from the fire must've aggravated it a bit.
OK.
Get it checked out when we get back to base.
No delay this time.
No, sir.
I'm in no hurry to go through that again.
Any ideas yet on what caused this fire? We're investigating, but it's still a bit of a mystery.
You know, she's an old ship.
Old wiring.
Who knows? I love her as much as you do, Charge.
But sadly, the old girl's showing her age.
I'd still like her to go out with a bit of oomph, sir.
We can arrange that.
Don't worry.
(SNORING) (Snores) Show time.
(Sighs) Alright, come on.
Seriously, you should've seen him.
It was a treat.
Thank you, buddy.
Six months.
Ladies and gentlemen the King is dead.
Long live the King! (All cheer and applaud) (Man whistles) SPIDER: Hey! Ah, Spide.
Redeemed yourself.
Well done, mate.
Yeah.
About time, eh? Got him back.
Got him back.
It was tough but, uh, we did it.
Uh l'm gonna catch you guys later.
I've gotta l've gotta head off, so I'll see you ET, your shout? Yeah, I'll get one too, ET.
Josh, hi.
Hey, Suzie, how are you? Good.
How are you? I'm g I'm good, I'm good.
Good.
Remember that night that we caught up at that wine bar? Yeah, yeah.
That was a big night.
I'm pregnant.
It's yours.
Sir.
Gallagher, what are you doing here? Aren't you the one following me, Captain? Where's Ursula Morrell? Last seen, she was bobbing about in the Arafura Sea - counting turtles.
If anything happens to her You'll what? Turn your warship on me? You know what they say - big gun, little I'm sorry to interrupt.
Sir, the commander's waiting for us.
You'll keep.
No doubt I will.
Ciao, Kate.
What the hell was he doing here? Lodging a formal complaint that you boarded an Australian-flagged vessel under false pretences, then, having failed to find any evidence of wrongdoing, exceeded his generosity when he asked you to leave, therefore you were trespassing.
Trespassing?! Sir, the 'Pacific Mariner' is involved in something, be it people-smuggling or some other illegal activity.
It's dirty.
What? Based on some very circumstantial evidence and your gut feeling.
You had no need to board the 'Pacific Mariner' Yes.
You disobeyed earlier guidance to check out a type-lll FFV.
Sir.
The 'Pacific Mariner' is off limits, Lieutenant Commander, do you understand? Yes, sir.
