SEAL Team (2017) s04e11 Episode Script

Limits of Loyalty

1 Previously on SEAL Team I'm Lieutenant Commander Williams, the JAG assigned to your defense Master Chief Hayes is accused of voluntary manslaughter for shooting Yazeed Nafal, an unarmed Jordanian civilian Exhibit 3: cell phone footage of the shooting.
Command has issued a no-contact order.
You are to stay away from each other and from Jason.
My detailer called, said that I should hear back about that Echo job by next month.
- I'm pregnant.
- She deserves a response.
What do you need a lawyer for? The i-investigation involves classified information.
Why are you holding out on me? What happened to Sonny wasn't on you.
Everything falls on Bravo 1.
Trial counsel found out that, uh, Raqqa Jacques was Ray's torturer.
They think I shot an unarmed man out of revenge.
They upped the charges to murder.
Chief Warrant Officer Ray Perry has already testified that when you found out about Raqqa Jacques, you were determined to get revenge on his behalf.
That's not accurate.
So much so that you charged into that building loaded for bear and shot the first man you saw.
Look, it was a routine op.
So it's routine for you to murder unarmed civilians - on operations? - I didn't murder anybody.
This is what they do.
Push your buttons to make you look volatile.
All right, look, can we just run it again until I get it right? - Keep running it.
- There's a reason most defendants don't take the stand.
Well, I'm gonna look more guilty if I don't say anything, so I got to say something.
The judge will instruct the panel that not testifying is not an admission of guilt.
I'd recommend the same to any client facing a murder charge.
After Lindell comes Bravo.
Uh, Spenser, Quinn, Sawyer, Reynolds, Carter, will all take the stand.
What about Ray? He'll testify, but he's taken an immunity deal.
Immunity from what? Dad's other teammates didn't take any deals.
Since Chief Warrant Officer Perry was the OIC during the op in question, the UCMJ could technically charge him regardless of the outcome of the trial with Article 92, failure to obey a lawful regulation.
I'm sure the prosecution presented him with immunity, uh, in exchange for him being on their witness list.
Well, if he's working with the prosecution that means he's gonna have to testify against me.
- That's it.
- I don't know.
I read his deposition after it was unsealed.
His answers are deliberately vague.
He was walking a semantic tightrope.
But he'll be forced to take a strong position in court, won't he? They'll want to use your father's friendship to push the revenge angle, dramatize Chief Warrant Officer Perry's captivity and say that his torture was your father's motive - to kill an unarmed man.
- I think you should go get some sodas for us.
- Dad, I can handle this.
- No, I think that you should go.
- I can do this.
- Luckily, this won't be tried in the court of public opinion, so you and your family won't get dragged through the mud.
The U.
S.
may be scapegoating you, but no one wants this situation to get out.
Total media blackout.
Oh, that's too bad.
I was really hoping to launch my T-shirt line on 60 Minutes.
No gallery, no teammates.
No family.
Not until the verdict is announced.
Sorry, Emma.
It's okay.
The good news is you have a lot of support.
Unparalleled success with high-profile missions.
An otherwise peerless record.
That's now been trashed.
I've gathered over a dozen references from past teammates.
Great work.
- Thanks.
- Having a "good sailor" book full of rave character reviews are just the thing we'll need for leniency with the panel in case of sentencing.
Sentencing? Bad enough that the Navy thinks I'm guilty.
Now I have the two of you convicting me.
Hey, um, I don't know how this is all going to fit.
I can't believe I accumulated so much stuff.
Well, I can't believe that I asked a hoarder to move in with me.
Forgive me for being sentimental, but you know, you never know what you're gonna fall in love with again.
Right? Did you just compare me to this this crusty Walden Pond souvenir? Okay, perhaps I need to declutter.
I think that's a good idea.
You should, uh, you should probably cast away all remnants of life before you met me.
Same to you.
Actually, you know what? Maybe we should, um, give all of our stuff the Marie Kondo treatment.
That sounds like a martial art.
No, it's when you're, uh, supposed to hold something and see if it "sparks joy", and if it doesn't spark joy, then you throw it out.
I think this sparks joy.
- Mm? Mm-hmm.
- Mm-hmm.
Little bit.
Mm-mm-mm.
It's Jace.
Hey, brother, what's up? No.
No, I haven't heard from him.
Yeah, let me I'll see where his head's at.
Okay.
That sounded ominous.
Jason's worried about what Ray's gonna say in court.
And Jason can't contact Ray directly, so Look, I I know that, I know that we said we would spend today together.
It's okay.
Go do what you need to do.
I have a little bit to keep me busy.
You sure? Just a little bit.
- All right.
- Okay.
- I'll be back soon, okay? - Okay.
We need to go back to your JAG's office.
You can't run from this.
- You think I'm guilty? - What? I mean, do you think I'm guilty? The way the prosecution is spinning this right now, I-I completely get why my own daughter would think that I'm guilty.
I know you like to do things the right way.
That's why I came down here to help you.
- And that's why you need to prepare.
- Prepare.
Prepare for what, my whole career to be flushed down the toilet? I can't even speak in my own defense here.
Well, Lieutenant Commander Williams - said that's normal.
- Normal? Like your best friend stabbing you in the back? That's normal? You don't know what's going on with him, - but he wouldn't do that.
- He wouldn't do that.
Uncle Ray's family.
You know, I hope you're right.
'Cause never did I think the Navy would be railroading me, either, but here I am.
Hey.
- Hey.
- What are you doing here? Just want to see how you're holding up.
I'm fine.
What makes you think I need checking up on? Well, maybe 'cause your best friend's on trial for his life? Or maybe because, as OIC on the op, if Jason goes down, you could be at risk.
In this job, we're always in the crosshairs.
I got it handled.
You got it handled as in as in lawyering up and getting immunity? Look, team knows you didn't do anything out of bounds.
Okay? Neither did Jason.
Just want to know what's going on with you, man.
What part of "no-contact order" don't you understand, Clay? All right.
Sit here in the dark Sonny Quinn, what are you doing? Oh, uh, just taking a break.
You know, I've defused bombs that are a lot less complicated than this crib.
Well, it's a good thing you have ten more weeks to put it together.
Yeah, well, it, uh, it might actually take me that long.
You know, you're welcome here anytime.
Lisa, too.
Yeah.
We'll definitely take you up on that.
Oh, look at that.
Speak of the devil.
Hey.
- Hey.
- Your ears must've been burning.
Look at this right here.
Is that crib still in pieces? Yes, it is, okay? The damn Swedish Chef wrote the directions.
I told him he was in over his head.
Hey, Hannah.
How are you? I'm good.
I'm, uh, trying to hire a new manager at the bar.
Hey, if you need anything, um, we're here.
Thanks, Lisa.
- I'll let you two catch up.
- Great.
Thank you.
- Uh You okay? - I'm good.
All right.
Hey.
Hi.
I'm so sorry I had to extend the trip, but, um, you know, I didn't realize there was so much stuff to do for one tiny human.
How's everything going? Uh, well, I've almost finished collating the last of the reports for the JAGs, and I kind of wish they'd just call me as a witness so I could defend Jason publicly.
The optics of working on behalf of the prosecution does not look great.
Well, that ain't your choice.
Echo knows that.
You heard anything on the new job? Not yet, but probably just tangled up in the usual red tape.
Them, uh, damn pencil pushers better hurry their butts up because this right here, okay, has been a little classified for too long.
Mm Right.
I-I got to take Hannah to go see the OB-GYN Kenobi doctor.
Ah.
No, I-I actually have to go, too.
We just got clearance to complete the S.
A.
Intel dossier on Raqqa Jacques, so Have fun with Hannah.
I will.
All right.
I'll call you later.
- Bye.
- Bye.
The panel consists of eight members.
Three are enlisted and two are battle-tested.
They need three-fourths to convict.
The prosecution will want to prove you're a loose cannon capable of war crimes.
They'll have scoured through every Bravo AAR and evaluation from the past two decades.
What exactly are they looking for? Violations of protocol, clashes between you and other operators.
Anything to show your emotions overruled tactical judgement.
If their plan is to make my dad out to be a monster, what's our plan? Cite your father's track record.
Highlight their shoddy investigation.
Discredit the bystander's incomplete video of the shooting.
You make it sound so easy.
Um, I'm sorry to interrupt, Lieutenant Commander.
I've got the Raqqa Jacques dossier.
I also wanted to share something else with you.
I was reviewing Intel from the Jordan op.
That man with the tattoo holding the AK, that's Yazeed Nafal.
Whoa.
Let me see that.
That's the guy Dad shot.
They said he was just a driver.
In his recruitment video, he calls for "death to the Western world".
"Just a driver" my ass.
- I hope that helps.
- Excellent work.
Davis, thanks.
Good luck tomorrow.
We're all behind you.
This is a game changer, right? Proving Nafal was an active member of the AKM could demolish the prosecution's case.
Things are starting to look up here.
In the courtroom tomorrow, remember, it's not just the facts or your record on trial.
The jury will be watching you, too.
So when JAG Flores attacks your character, or a ruling goes against us, you don't react.
Stay calm in the chaos and show the jury why they can trust you.
All rise.
Be seated, please.
The court will now come to order.
Is the government prepared to make an opening statement? Yes, Your Honor.
Permission to enter the well.
Proceed.
On 11 March, 2021, while on a mission with SEAL Team Bravo in Irbid, Jordan, Master Chief Jason Hayes entered a residential building and shot and killed Yazeed Nafal, an unarmed Jordanian civilian.
The government will demonstrate by means of video evidence, timeline and testimony that Chief Hayes committed murder, motivated by revenge on behalf of his best friend and fellow SEAL, Warrant Officer Raymond Perry.
This is a tragic event.
While the government has the utmost respect for Master Chief Hayes' service to this country, he must be held accountable for this heinous crime.
The prosecution will tell you that Master Chief Hayes went rogue.
That he was overcome with vengeance and shot an innocent man in cold blood.
Nonsense.
It is Master Chief Hayes' unwavering sworn statement that the deceased, Yazeed Nafal, an AKM henchman, was holding an M1951 Beretta in his left hand.
The taking of a life might be heinous to those of us fortunate enough to never have engaged in combat, but the reality is that Master Chief Hayes is wrongly on trial for doing his job.
Mr.
Khalaf, as the representative of Jordan's General Intelligence Directorate, you have intimate knowledge of the investigation.
Could you tell us what was discovered at the crime scene? Police found the body of Yazeed Nafal in the hallway with two gunshot wounds to the chest.
- Mr.
Khalaf, was a weapon found on or near Nafal's body? - No.
No weapons of any kind.
What other evidence did the police recover from the scene? A neighbor came forward to share a mobile phone video he recorded.
I will now play the footage from this cell phone camera.
Exhibit 2.
Mr.
Khalaf, the time stamp on the video is 12:02 p.
m.
Police arrived at 12:29 p.
m.
So it's conceivable that in 27 minutes, a passerby could have taken the gun.
Perhaps even the police or someone wanting to spin the events in a different Objection.
- Speculation.
- Sustained.
Master Chief Hayes is on record stating Nafal had a pistol at his side in his left hand.
Could the family of Yazeed Nafal confirm he was left-handed? The victim's family, in their grief, did not respond to your inquiry.
The "victim".
Right.
Is the Jordanian government aware Nafal was not working for an officer of the AKM but was an enthusiastic member of the AKM himself? I will now play Exhibit A.
Objection.
Lack of foundation.
The defense is putting the victim on trial.
Sustained.
Your Honor, I've admitted into evidence authenticated propaganda.
I have reviewed your late submission and have ruled the evidence to be inadmissible.
The victim cannot defend himself in this courtroom.
The only person on trial here is Master Chief Hayes.
The judge made a perplexing ruling, - but you can't lash out like that.
- Perplexing? That's the word you use? "Perplexing"? This judge, is he trying to railroad me, too? My entire life is under the microscope here, and we can't discuss the fact that this guy was a terrorist? It's one judge's bad decision.
I'm confident it would be overturned on appeal.
Appeal? My entire career will be over if this goes to appeal.
Put it behind us for now.
We've got enough to worry about with Lindell.
He'll want to distance himself from any scandal.
That's great.
Lindell.
Guy's wanted me gone since he got here.
Now is his shot.
Master Chief Hayes retired from operating, then asked to return to field duty.
Do you know why? He believed he would have the most impact on the battlefield.
Couldn't stay out of the fight, could he? Did you have any reservations about reinstating Master Chief Hayes as Bravo 1? His performance mitigated any of my concerns.
Have you ever needed to reprimand Master Chief Hayes for his conduct? Yes, on occasion.
I have here an evaluation dated 7 October 2019 where you refer to Master Chief Hayes as a "renegade".
So, in your opinion, does the Master Chief play by his own rules? I was referring to his tactics, not his character.
While it's true the Master Chief doesn't always do things the way I would like I'm loathe to imagine what the war on terror would look like without him at the tip of the spear.
In all my years in the Teams, I've come across no finer operator than Master Chief Hayes.
Appreciate you cleaning yourself up, SO1 Quinn.
- Navy gave us relaxed grooming standards - so we could stay mission ready.
You like going after guys for following the rules, don't you? Hmm? When you passed the deceased in the hallway, did you see a gun on his person or on the ground? I didn't.
No.
No, sir, I did not.
But I wasn't looking for one.
You never even entered the building, yet in your deposition, you allege Master Chief Hayes followed the ROEs? If Master Chief Hayes shot a man, that man had a weapon or was a direct threat.
You saw the victim enter the building.
Did you see him holding the gun Master Chief Hayes describes? One guy had an AK slung over his shoulder.
Other guy could have had a concealed weapon.
But you didn't see the weapon on the victim? It was your regular Jihad Joe working for AKM.
The same terrorist that blew up 12 servicemen - in Baghdad.
- Answer the question, Petty Officer.
No, I didn't.
Four eagle-eyed sharpshooters, and not one of them spotted a gun.
Have you ever questioned Bravo 1's decision-making on a mission? We've all had our difference of opinions.
But I trust Master Chief Hayes more than anyone to get us home.
Has anyone discussed going "shields up" to protect your team leader? No, sir.
No member of Bravo would stand by and support a brother if he committed a war crime.
None of you saw this elusive gun, yet you all assert, under oath, that Chief Hayes is innocent.
If he made that mistake, - he'd own up to it.
- Really? Can you name one instance of Master Chief Hayes owning up to an error he made in the field? Nothing comes to mind.
Teammates painted a picture of you as someone who's always in control on the battlefield.
I'm not sure they swayed the panel.
Only two members have seen combat.
The rest of them don't know what it's like outside the wire.
Which is why Chief Warrant Officer Perry, as an officer and operator, is our best option to appeal to them.
Or the best option to put the final nail in my coffin.
Court will now come to order.
Is the government prepared to proceed? Yes, Your Honor.
Call your next witness.
The government calls Chief Warrant Officer Raymond Perry to the stand.
When did you learn the man you were hunting was your torturer? The night before the mission.
When did Master Chief Hayes learn this? The next morning.
Did Master Chief Hayes pressure you - into launching an op without approval from Jordan? - No.
No? In your deposition, when asked if Master Chief Hayes was eager to pursue the op, you answered yes.
Yes, he wanted to move; no, he didn't pressure me.
The timeline of events indicates that as soon as Master Chief Hayes knew of your connection to the mission, the op was full speed ahead.
Yes, we received time-sensitive actionable Intel that morning.
You're saying the Master Chief's knowledge of Raqqa Jacques and the launch of this op was just a coincidence? Yes, sir.
Time was of the essence.
How many S.
A.
missions have you led as warrant officer? Two.
You were held captive for six days and subjected to extreme physical and psychological torture.
I'm sure no one in this courtroom would blame you for bending to the will of someone you trust if they promised you retribution.
Is that a question, sir? Must be difficult to suddenly act as OIC to a man you have been subordinate to for 13 years.
As much as I respect Master Chief Hayes, I respect the chain of command more.
It was my decision to take the op kinetic.
The mission was a success, as was the follow-on.
And for the record I killed Raqqa Jacques, not Jason Hayes.
No further questions.
Your Honor, given that Chief Warrant Officer Perry's testimony nullifies the revenge motive for murder, I propose a motion to dismiss all charges.
I will dismiss the charge of premeditated murder.
But the members could still find for involuntary manslaughter.
The witness may be excused.
- Ray had your six after all.
- Mm-hmm.
Losing motive puts a big hole in the prosecution's case.
But the involuntary manslaughter, this boots me off the team, gets me ten years.
Still, there's no gun.
Our expert witness will poke holes in the video evidence.
Expert witness? You're telling me I have to rely on some computer geek to look for missing camera angles here? I mean, even you said that video makes me look like a killer.
I need to tell my side of the story.
Putting you on the stand will make us look desperate.
I am desperate.
It only took me three questions to get you to self-destruct in prep.
Flores is dying to get you on his turf and push your buttons.
My word should matter.
If you blow up on the stand, your word will get you sent away for the rest of your life.
It's my ass on the line, ma'am.
Do you solemnly swear or affirm that the testimony you will give in this general court-martial will be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, under penalty of perjury? I do.
Please be seated.
State your name, rank and billet.
Jason M.
Hayes, Master Chief, United States Navy.
Navy Special Warfare Development Group.
- Bravo Team Leader.
- It's your witness.
Master Chief, walk me through what happened in Irbid on 11 March.
Bravo Team arrived on target.
My teammates observed two men enter an apartment complex, one shouldering an AK.
Because they were armed, we entered the apartment complex with our pistols drawn.
Surely it was chaos the moment you entered the building.
How are you able to recall what happened during such a kinetic operation? We're trained to do this.
It's our job.
We remain calm in the chaos.
It's like time slows down.
I led my team up the stairs.
I was the tip of the spear.
I rounded a corner.
I looked up, I saw a male black hair, track jacket.
Had a gun on his side in his left hand.
It was a Beretta M1951.
Before he could alert the others, I shot him.
I continued into the target, and I completed my duty.
No further questions.
Is there cross-examination? Yes, Your Honor.
So, Master Chief Hayes, your duty, as you put it, is to kill people? You got that backwards.
My job is to save lives, not take them.
Like the hundreds of innocent people that Bravo Team saved by stopping AKM terrorists from taking out two commercial airliners.
Speaking of innocent people, I'd like to concentrate on the very real, and very dead, unarmed Jordanian citizen, Mr.
Nafal.
Is he the first unarmed man you've killed? - Objection.
- Sustained.
How many people have you killed? That's not something I think about.
Is that because after 20 years you've become indifferent to killing? It's because I know what it means to take a human life.
Chief Warrant Officer Perry testified that you learned of the HVT's identity a few hours before the Irbid op.
That's correct.
You rescued Warrant Officer Perry from his torture chamber.
You witnessed his ordeal, and his condition, first hand? I did.
That must have been difficult.
If I had been in your position, I would absolutely want justice for what was done to my best friend.
With all due respect, sir, you've never been in my position.
Are you telling me this bombshell about the HV didn't cause you to conflate your personal feelings and your professional duty? It's always personal.
The war on terror started when 3,000 of our fellow Americans were killed on our own soil.
They hit us, so we hit them back.
There's nothing impersonal about it.
So you're admitting emotion clouded your judgment and led you to kill an unarmed man? Mr.
Nafal had a gun.
Clearly a man willing to compromise his morals to kill must be willing to lie, too.
- Objection.
- Overruled.
Answer the question, Master Chief.
The war on terror has come at a heavy price.
It's cost me my family, my teammates, my marriage, seeing my kids grow up.
But the one thing that it hasn't taken from me is my honor and my word.
I wouldn't disrespect the Trident to protect myself.
Lying would be a betrayal to my men and the country I love to serve.
I only have one more question.
Master Chief Hayes where's the gun? Hey.
Ain't you a sight for sore eyes? - Well, right back at you, sailor.
- Yeah.
This damn trial.
Uh, it's bad enough that they're stringing up Jace for some BS and you and I got to tiptoe around all - these extra eyeballs on Bravo.
- Yeah.
- None of this is easy.
- Hey.
I, uh I just really wish we could go back to normal.
Normal? So, how did it go in court? Oh, it was all a joke.
They kept picking apart every minute of the day leading up to the op.
Hardly anything that really matters.
Ah, maybe we should be doing that.
- What? - I mean, maybe we've been so focused on the day of the shooting that we've been missing the whole picture.
I got to head back to the office.
Uh, I'm s Don't wait up.
- No.
Oh.
- Sorry.
You're killing me.
Literally.
What's this? - I'm making Linguini.
- Ha! 'Guini, my favorite.
Don't get your hopes up.
I haven't perfected the Parmesan-to-butter ratio like Mom did.
- Mom's recipe, too, huh? - Yeah.
Ah, that's a good last supper to have.
It's not funny.
It's a little funny, don't you think? I think it's funny.
JAG Williams called and said Uncle Ray and your testimony made a big dent in the prosecution's case.
Still have that, uh, video evidence.
And it's my word against theirs, so Mm-hmm.
I just want you to know that, you know, I did the right thing.
Never doubted that for a second.
- Em? - Hmm? You know, if I do go away, you-you're gonna have to be Mikey's guardian.
No, we're not thinking about that.
I know that it's difficult - to talk about these times of things, Em.
- Mm.
I-I That I get, but you know what, you're - Okay.
- Come on, you're gonna be able to handle this, okay? Handle you going to jail? How? Look, you're a strong, young woman.
You know what, you kept this family together.
- After Mom.
- Okay.
You've always been able to manage without having me around most of your life.
You-you kept the family together.
- Why do you always do that? - What? Acting like the only value you have is to your team on the battlefield.
I don't care what you think.
You're the only parent I have left.
I'm always gonna need you.
Look, I'm sorry.
Hey.
They can't take you away from me.
They're not.
Don't.
Hey.
Hey.
Shh.
They won't.
Lt.
Commander Williams, I'm sorry to be calling you so early.
This photo of Yazeed Nafal was taken by Chief Petty Officer Mina Hassan in Irbid, Jordan, 48 hours before he was shot by Master Chief Hayes.
There is a gun tucked into Nafal's waistband on the left side.
The grip is consistent with an M1951 Beretta.
The gun described by Master Chief Hayes.
Yes, ma'am, the very same.
What matters is the evidence.
A video of Master Chief Hayes shooting an unarmed man without provocation.
The defense provided a partial image of the grip of a pistol from two days before the killing.
This is purely circumstantial and cannot put a gun in the victim's hand at the time of his death.
The government asks that you find the accused guilty as charged.
Lieutenant Commander Williams.
You've seen the photo of the gun.
You've heard the testimony of the sailors who stood alongside Master Chief Hayes, who applaud his good standing and honorable reputation.
And you've heard the sworn statement of Master Chief Hayes himself.
Master Chief Hayes, in many ways, is the embodiment of the war on terror.
For over 20 years he's run into the fire for his country.
While the prosecution has gone to great lengths to portray Master Chief Hayes as a killer, I've learned and I hope you have, too that Master Chief Hayes doesn't do his job to shoot the enemy in front of him.
He does it to protect the people behind him.
Not just his teammates but his countrymen.
And despite all he's sacrificed and the deep, personal price he's paid, Master Chief Hayes has never asked for anything in return.
So I'll ask for him.
If you're willing to trust him with your freedom, please also trust his word.
Has the panel reached a verdict? Yes, we have, Your Honor.
We find the defendant, Master Chief Jason M.
Hayes not guilty.
Thank you.
It was my honor, Master Chief.
- There you go.
- Thank you.
Oh, what we got here? Hey now.
All hail the conquering hero.
- Hey, how are you? - Mm.
Thank you.
You didn't have to do all this, you know.
All you been through? Couldn't get the champagne on ice fast enough.
JAG Flores found out what happens when you mess with the great Jason Hayes, huh? Thanks, man, appreciate you all.
I really do.
Thanks for, uh, being there and standing by me with the support.
All of you, thanks.
Thank you.
Bravo 1.
Welcome back.
- Love you, brother, hey.
- Love you back.
Appreciate you, I really do.
Thanks for what you did up there on the stand.
All I did was tell the truth.
Yeah, but going kinetic.
- Maybe I did push a little too hard.
- Mm.
I was the OIC.
You didn't make me do anything I didn't want to.
Okay.
Chief Warrant Officer Perry.
I'm just glad the truth finally prevailed.
Not sure I could've kept on without you.
Good thing I'm not going anywhere.
- Mm.
- Hey, where's Stella? - She, uh, she had a lot of papers to grade.
- Mm.
Look, man.
The way I handled everything No worries, man.
You were just looking after your team leader here.
Shouldn't have doubted you.
Just, uh, Jason in DoD's crosshairs, I lost track of everything that you've been through these last few months, too.
It's been a tough go for Bravo Team since we got back from Tunisia.
Yeah, I'm just glad it's behind us.
- All of it.
- That's right.
Hey, uh, not to upstage Bravo 1 here, but, uh, I, uh, I got some big news myself.
The McRib's back already? Uh I'm gonna be a dad.
What? Yeah.
Sonny Quinn's gonna be a dad Wait, uh, who's the lucky lady? And what time does she get off stage? The mother, um, is an old friend of mine from Texas.
But, uh, we're not together.
Why not? It's, uh, it's complicated.
Look, I think, uh, - I think we're long overdue for a toast here, huh? - Yeah.
Yeah.
- Come on, babe.
- Get in there.
- Get in there.
- Get 'em altogether now.
- To freedom.
- Freedom! Freedom! All right, all right, so what does a lawyer get when you give him Viagra? - What? - Taller.
That's all I got, that's all I got.
Maybe Ray should take some.
Ooh, burn! Did you guys see the look on the JAG's face - when they announced the verdict? - Douche thought he had a career-maker.
Seriously, man, baiting us with those questions about Raqqa Jacques? Come on, like this, like this was some sort of revenge mission for Ray's torture.
Like we need a reason to go after a terrorist.
Uh, yeah, like, uh, hello? That's our job.
Hey.
Why aren't you inside? It's a party, not a wake, because of you.
Not really in the mood.
Um, I saw Lindell after the verdict.
And - I didn't get the job with Echo.
- What? But you're a shoo-in.
Yeah, because of the investigation into Bravo, command didn't even consider my application.
You're kidding me.
I mean, the trial's over.
Jason was acquitted.
Yeah, detailer said there's not gonna be another position open with DEVGRU anytime soon.
I'm stuck with Bravo.
I'm sorry.
So we're back to where we were a year ago, huh? Oh it's Hannah.
She-she had a a doc um Uh, doesn't matter.
It's not exactly where we were a year ago.
Yeah.
Is this another sign? Seems, you know no matter how hard we try, the stars, they they just don't align.
Mm.
When I was back in Texas, everyone mistook Hannah and I as a couple.
And here nobody's allowed to know what we have.
That's not fair.
No, it's not.
I don't know how to fix this.
You know, if I had a nickel for every damn obstacle that was thrown in our way I think you just get to a point where there's more reasons to break up than stay together.
Yeah.
Hey.
Like what you've done with the place.
Oh.
Yeah.
Sorry I changed so much without you.
I was I was feeling motivated.
No, it looks good.
I'm glad that you approve.
Except for one thing.
What? What Uh, you don't need to do that for me.
I know.
It's for me, too.
Bravo doesn't need to loom over us all the time.
This is our place.
Only for us.
Okay.
Mmm.
You know, babe, we should've just got a keg.
I overheard what they were saying.
About the trial being about going after the person who tortured you.
Some revenge mission.
Jason was found innocent, babe.
That's not what happened.
Do you know how small it makes me feel hearing what you've kept from me? You said Jordan was just another op.
I thought we shared everything.
I was protecting you, baby.
Building a wall between us doesn't protect me.
It isolates you from this family.
Look, I'm I'm here for you.
Why won't you let me in? This is not how our marriage works.
Hey.
You know, you could've stayed at the party just a little bit longer with your old man.
Mm, you needed to be with your brothers, and I figured things were gonna get a little rowdy given they have their leader back.
Well, real celebration is, uh, being able to talk to you with no bars in between us.
Mm.
I'm glad you came.
I really am.
But I can, uh, handle things from here on out now.
Of course you can.
You're the strongest person I know.
I'm just glad that you weren't in that courtroom to hear all the horrible things that Flores had to say about me.
He was saying whatever it took to win, fighting dirty.
Yeah.
Always tried my best not to bring the war back home with me.
- Mm-hmm.
- But, uh this one was tough.
It stirred something up inside of me, just the horrors that I've seen and things that I've done.
You're not a war criminal, Dad.
I'm not a hero, either.
Don't need a jury to tell me that.
You are to me.
And I'm not the only one who thinks so.
Even though you're not facing sentencing, you should still see this "good sailor" book.
- Ah, the book.
- Yeah.
Want me to read a letter? - I love when you read to me.
- Oh.
Sure.
"I had the distinct honor of serving alongside Master Chief Hayes for two years.
His leadership in the field is second to none, and I have never known an operator more committed to Navy".
That's from someone named Theo Papadakis.
Theo.
That's a blast from the past.
I don't remember you ever mentioning him.
Yeah.
Well, you know, you were You were in your poo-poo diapers.
How old do you think I am? He writes he got out eight years ago.
You were young.
He got an injury and left Bravo Team.
I I haven't seen him since.
Doesn't seem to have changed his mind about what kind of man you are.
Yeah.
