Strangers (2018) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

1 The police found you at the crime scene with blood on you.
Tell them what really happened or they're going to send me to prison.
She gave us instructions to give you access.
What did he say? He said he was paid to kill her.
By who? You said he could get us leverage.
We've still got options.
This is my mess.
I'll clean it up.
That's two croissants and a macaroon on the house.
- Have a good day.
- Thank you.
Excuse me? I'll have one of those, please.
And a filter coffee.
Black.
I need you to do something for me.
No, look, I know I said I'd help you but I made a mistake.
Yeah, you don't have a choice.
You like her, don't you? It'd be a shame to have to ruin things.
I'd hate to have to tell Lau about our arrangement.
One more favour, then we're done.
Wait here.
What took you so long? I've been ironing out your deal.
And? This morning, a payment of half a million dollars went into a bank account, a private bank account, that's in your name.
The money will be waiting for you when you get out.
How long? You give them a full confession, a guilty plea, I think you'll be looking at eight to ten.
Good behaviour, you'll be out in six.
I'm not doing six years.
We've got a good relationship with the guards, you'll be well looked after.
Not good enough, try again.
You're lucky that we're even talking.
500,000 for six years, that's 80,000 a year.
The things I know are worth more than that.
I know who you work for.
Tell your boss I want a better deal.
We've got a problem with Kai Huang.
Do you want me to take care of it? - Don't forget that.
- Oh, thank you.
Life-saver.
What's this? That? That's for a colleague.
His son's not been well so I just thought I'd get him something to cheer him up.
Interesting choice.
A rat.
That's definitely not going to give him nightmares.
Sorry.
I'll give you a hundred quid if you stay.
Pfft, no chance.
£150? Mr Mulray, charges have been dropped, you are free to go.
What about him? You better go now, before they change their mind.
THEY TALK IN OWN LANGUAGE Who posted bail? Payment was made anonymously in cash.
Kai confessed to the murder on the boat.
And what about Megan? They're still calling it an accident.
Well, we need to talk to Kai.
And say what? Ask him nicely who paid him to kill Megan? We should at least try.
He's in jail, we can't get near him.
PHONE RINGING This is Lau, I can't take your call right now Lau's not answering.
Mr Chen, Mr Mulray, please? What is this? I'm here to pick you up, sir.
- Who sent you? - Please? Please? I've been trying to get hold of you.
- He still on? - Just finishing up.
That's a list of approved questions.
What's Michael doing on here? He said you'd given him the OK.
Well, I didn't.
CANDIDATE: Then, find new solutions, well HE LAUGHS .
.
I hope everybody votes the right way.
HE LAUGHS - MEDIATOR: Over there.
- MICHAEL: Thank you.
I wondered if the candidate had anything to say about the allegations of police corruption under the current administration? What allegations? Well, for example, the recent case of Megan Harris, British national, and our claims that her death hasn't been properly investigated and her body disappearing from a police morgue.
I'm sorry, I'm not sure how this is quite relevant.
FEMALE REPORTER: I've just got one more question to ask I would like to address this issue.
I have been made aware of Miss Harris's case, but sadly this is not an isolated example, the truth is, the police force is crippled by cuts and vulnerable to corruption.
When we take shortcuts we put ourselves at risk.
I've just got one more question I'm sorry that's all we have time for, many thanks, no more questions.
Thank you.
Thank you.
MICHAEL: So, no answers then.
Doesn't that bother anyone? CROWD SHOUT QUESTIONS Try and answer the question.
CROWD SHOUT QUESTIONS Mr Chen, Mr Mulray, your host is waiting for you.
Lau, what are you doing here? Thought I'd treat myself.
Popcorn? Something to drink, Sirs? Some food? We're fine.
THEY TALK IN OWN LANGUAGE What's going on? I got your letter.
You did the right thing, handing yourself in.
I paid the bail money.
- How? - Mum.
I don't understand.
She left me money.
A lot of money.
Pfft, she didn't have any money.
See for yourself.
She had a secret account.
Been trying to tell you but Turn it down.
- It doesn't make any sense.
- What is it? Five million Hong Kong dollars.
That's half a million pounds.
From Carrad.
Why would they pay her all that money? Paid the day before she was killed.
Bonus, maybe? She gets five million, next day someone pays Kai Huang to kill her, it's not a coincidence.
- - Michelle, get out of there.
What are you doing at my desk? - It's not yours any more.
- What? We're hot-desking now.
But I've been here six years, this is my desk.
They sent round an email.
But I've got all my stuff here.
You can take your stuff.
Oh, for fuck's sake.
Michael.
Hot-desking now, this place has turned to shit.
You get the brief I sent over? Get the kid to do it.
It's a two-page spread, we're sending you.
I don't want to do a fucking puff piece.
I don't have time, I've got court this afternoon.
It's priority.
35 cents a word.
No, forget about it, I've got an important story to work on.
Oh, tell me you're not still stuck on Ben Torres.
Ben Torres, Megan Harris, we've got two bodies, - their deaths are connected - Michael, stop.
- .
.
and the police have made no press release, - We're not in the bussiness of printing - no coroner's report, - conspiracy theory.
and you still think it's a conspiracy theory.
Again, this Ben Torres thing, you've got nothing.
TV REPORTER: This week's protests outside the offices of Xo HK International.
Oh, OK, bye.
- What is it? - Kai Huang is dead.
- What? How? - Stabbed.
In prison.
Where are you going? I'm going to Carrad Investments, I'm gonna find out where this money came from.
- You coming? - I'm on bail.
Fine.
I'll go on my own.
I'm coming too.
No, no, no! Go home, lock the door, don't open up to anybody.
I'm coming with you! - Dad, I'm not gonna go home - Just do what I say.
Hi, I'm here to see Mr Letman.
- Your name? - David Chen.
You're Megan's husband.
- I'll let Mr Letman know you're here.
- Thank you.
This is my brother-in-law.
Very nice to see you again, I'm sorry it's under such unhappy circumstances.
So, Megan was part of your residential team? Yes, she identified properties for purchase and got them ready for market.
And sold them on at profit? Well, we're not a charity.
What kind of commission did she make? Well, it depends on the property.
Commercial deals can go into triple figures, residentials, small potatoes.
Yeah, we found this statement amongst other things.
Thank you.
Right, there's the Carrad transaction reference, let's see what this property was, shall we? Yes, here it is.
266 Craigmin Road, Five million dollars deposit.
Five million, just for the deposit? Luxury condo in the peak.
7,000 square feet, eight bedrooms, indoor pool, four-car garage.
It looks like it was the last deal Megan brokered before the accident.
The deposit was paid by a company called Third Empire.
I've never heard of them.
Well, we appreciate you taking the time to see us, Mr Letman.
Hello? There's got to be something here on Third Empire.
Check the laptop again.
We've searched everywhere.
You've got to let it go.
She led me here, she told me, "Sunset over Por Toyo Bay.
" It's got to have something to do with this money.
There must be a reason.
There's no reason, it doesn't make sense.
You have to move past this, I know it's not easy.
Well, you don't seem to be having much difficulty.
You are a widow, I'm still a father.
Megan put Lau's life in danger, I can't forgive her for that.
She was trying to help her.
Who knows what she was doing? Whatever she was involved in got her killed.
She was in trouble and she needed our help.
She got herself killed, she will get us KNOCKING ON DOOR Who else knows about this place? No-one.
Wait! Wait! Wait! Who are you? My name's Michael Cohen, I'm a journalist.
This is hers, right? Where did you get this? - Get the fuck out of here.
- Hey.
- Get off me.
- David.
David! David, where are you going? What the hell was all that about? Oh, man.
Yeah, I'm here.
There's someone there.
I'm going to wait till dark.
THEY LAUGH Oh, who's this guy? My mum gave it to me.
This is Mr Bones.
SHE LAUGHS Should I be jealous? Maybe.
He's protective.
He's got his eye on you.
- Oh, I stink.
- Mm, you do.
I'm gonna go for a shower.
- When's your dad getting back? - Don't care.
Hey, are you leaving? - Yeah.
Got to go to work.
- I thought you were done? Double shift.
I thought I told you not to let anyone in.
Who was that? A friend.
You don't have to lie to me.
What you talking about? I'm not daft.
What's her name? Why do you care? You like her? That's all that matters.
Glad you called.
Thanks for meeting me at short notice.
Sorry about the location, it's a bit morbid.
It's close to the office, I don't have long.
So what do you know about Megan? Seen this guy before? That's Ben Torres.
I've been following him for about a month, he's a bottom feeder, makes a living stealing information and selling it to the highest bidder.
What's he doing with my wife? Well, that's what I'm trying to find out.
They meet, two days later they're both dead.
Funny coincidence.
Funny? I thought being a journalist, you might be able to come up with a better word than that.
35 cents a pop, you can't be too picky.
As far as I'm concerned, Torres's M.
O was as clear as crystal.
Construction contracts, gambling rings, insider trading.
Somewhere in the Venn diagram of corrupt Hong Kong business deals, you usually find Ben Torres.
But your wife is a real estate broker.
No criminal record or known associates.
I just don't get it.
There's a company she dealt with called Third Empire, have you heard of them? No, never heard of them, why? Apparently, they bought property from her.
So what happened between you and David? You'll have to ask him that, I've got to go.
Stay in touch.
- What is it? - She sleeps with it.
Thanks for doing this.
You're a terrible human being.
And now you've made me one too.
Fuck you for that.
Nice of you to join us, Mr Cohen.
Are you sure you want to proceed? HE BREATHES HEAVILY Yeah.
Thank you, Your Honour, and on behalf of Mr Cohen, thank you for granting this hearing to petition for the full and permanent custody of the child in question.
Oh, I'm sorry.
It's OK.
Thanks.
- 266 Craigmin Road.
- Yes.
- Are you sure? - Yes, OK.
- Wait here, OK? Wait here.
- OK.
Hey! Oh, come on.
Fuck's sake.
Fuck.
Argh.
Fuck.
SIREN SOUNDS OK, OK.
PHONE RINGS - - Seatbelt.
Thank you.
This is an electricity bill.
Same company, Third Empire.
They bought the place from Carrad.
Only it's not a luxury apartment, it's a garden shed.
Which means what, exactly? It's a scam, the whole property deal is phony.
It's just a way of covering a paper trail.
So what? Third Empire paid Megan five million.
- Exactly.
- Why? I don't know, that's what we need to find out.
So, this is all the company paperwork on Third Empire? That's everything.
OK.
Do you mind? This is Megan's signature.
She witnessed this document.
What does that mean? Well, look at the date of the incorporation.
The next day the company was dissolved, which means it existed for just three days.
One transaction only, to buy a worthless piece of property out in the sticks.
So basically, on Wednesday, Megan purchases 266 Craigmin Road, and then the next morning, she witnesses the incorporation of a company under the name of this guy, Jack Benitez.
He's listed as company director.
Flips the money over to Third Empire, and banks the five million.
So, it would seem Third Empire is just a shell company run by this guy, Jack Benitez.
And all the money going straight to Megan? - Well, it's a payment.
- So, why the secrecy? We better ask this guy, Jack Benitez.
Yes? Er, I'm Detective Chen.
We need to speak to Jack Benitez.
Jack? Why? What's he done? We just want to ask him a few questions.
- Jack.
- What? What's this all about? This is Jack Benitez? Yes, my son.
You know about this? Wait, just one second.
Can you tell me who that is? That's my dad.
He drives his car.
For Xo.
We need to go.
Thank you.
I hope everybody votes the right way.
I met him.
Xo.
The English consul took me to see him, he shook my hand, he knew Megan.
I think the five million came from him.
Maybe he tried to use Megan to move the money.
And she decided to run.
And he had her killed.
Xo, shut down the investigation.
HE EXHALES I need to get home.
KNOCKING ON DOOR Sorry, I didn't know who else to talk to.
Can I come in? Why couldn't you tell me on the phone? Xo had Megan killed.
Xo? As in Xo HKI? Are you drunk? Third Empire Limited, a corporation set up three days before Megan died in the name of a six-year-old boy, Jack Benitez.
His dad is a limo driver, guess who for? Xo Xiaodong.
Next day, Third Empire acquires a luxury condo from Carrad Investments.
Now, I checked this out, it's a clapped-out old shed in the arse end of nowhere.
Megan fixes the deal, pockets five million, which is paid into a secret bank account.
The money came from Xo.
Although he did his very best to hide it.
Next day, Megan meets up with this guy, Ben Torres.
You heard of him? Two days later, they're both dead.
Murdered.
Megan was washing money for Xo, Torres found out about it, blackmailed her, Xo had them both killed to cover it up.
So, what are we going to do with this? I'm sorry, can you just give me a sec.
SHE COUGHS You OK? SHE COUGHS PHONE BLEEPS PHONE RINGS MUSIC PLAYS - Lau, where are you? - Out.
I need you to go home, right now.
- I will explain when I get back.
- OK, yeah.
What was that? Nothing.
Dad's stressed.
Well? You and Ben Torres? We were engaged.
Why didn't you tell me? Didn't think it mattered.
You didn't think it mattered! I just told you that your fiance was murdered and you said nothing, you didn't even react.
So, you knew, you knew he was killed.
Did you know about Ben and Megan? - No.
- Stop fucking lying! I swear, I didn't know anything about it.
What are you doing? Hello, is that The Hong Kong Chronicle? I'd like to speak to Michael Cohen, please.
OK, you're right, I knew.
I'm sorry, I should have told you.
Why didn't you? Where did you get this photo? Michael Cohen, right? He showed it to me too.
I only learnt that Ben and Megan were in contact after he was found dead.
The police said that it was suicide.
But I knew that he would never do that.
He was murdered.
And they covered it up, like they covered up Megan's accident.
I was scared.
Well, it's a bit late for that.
