What Lives in the Lake

Mm.
Hmm? Oh! [GRUNTING.]
[YELLS.]
Somebody! KIM: Honey, this place is kind of creepy.
ERIC: I'd say it's nice and romantic.
Besides, I'd protect you no matter what.
KIM: I guess.
I love you, Kim.
I love you too, Eric.
Oh, come on! No, not yet.
I don't want to rush into it.
Your hands have been everywhere.
Do you want me that bad? I haven't done anything.
[RUSTLING NEARBY.]
[BOTH GASP.]
[BOTH SCREAMING.]
Damn it.
It's the carburetor, all right.
I told you we should've gotten it fixed at the last stop.
Shut up.
You think I can hand this sweetheart to a stranger? SAM: Fix it yourself then? I will, no matter what.
[SAM SIGHS.]
How long will it be? Stop nagging me! I don't know! SAM: I guess we'll be stuck in this town for a while.
LINDA: Here you are, boys.
Wow, looks good! Thanks.
I haven't seen you around.
Are you from out of town? Yeah, sort of.
Thought so.
You look too fancy for this town.
Yeah? I'd say you're a bit too pretty for this town.
Thanks.
I actually am from out of town like you.
I'm on the road.
I earn money working part-time wherever I go.
Unfortunately, I ran flat out of cash in this town.
So I'm doing this until I save up enough to get going again.
Could we offer you a ride to the next town? - Seriously? - Sure.
You have to wait till we get the car fixed, though.
That's not a bad idea.
Let me think about it.
Redheads.
They're fiery, you know.
But I wouldn't mind being spanked by her.
Dean, what the hell are you saying? We've got other stuff to do.
Kidding, man.
Would you relax? Look, there's nothing we can do while the car's broken.
Just learn how to relax for a while.
Whoa, you're not getting the jitters now, are you, Mike? No way, man.
Unless you are, Toby.
Be careful not to scream "mommy" when you see the thing.
Stop it, you two.
We have to think about how to spend the cash we earn when we sell the video.
What the hell is that? ED: Hunting for a creature.
Creature? Yeah.
They say there's something living in the lake in this town.
I hear that there was even a fatality recently.
Thanks to that, young people like them come barging in out of curiosity.
A real nuisance.
Creature, huh? Like what kind? [COYOTE HOWLING.]
Like that old man said at the bar this town has been seeing some curious incidents along that lake these past few years.
The witnesses all say they were attacked by some giant scaled creature.
Last week it was some guy out fishing and a young couple.
And they're all saying the same thing.
This doesn't bother you? Let it go.
Don't meddle in the local stuff.
It has nothing to do with what we're after.
Well, this could have something to do with us.
Meaning? I've re-examined the information on the Net.
This town just had a drought, and their crops are suffering.
Plus massive numbers of bees have died.
These things match the signs of the devil.
DEAN: I guess we'll look into it.
- No visitors? - Excuse me but I heard that Mr.
Steve was dragged into the lake by someone during the attack last week.
Was he injured that badly? No, it's not his injury, but Doctor! Emergency! I'll be right there.
Sorry, but I need to go.
Oh, I'm sure.
That thing was no human.
Its hands, they were completely covered with scales.
And after that, what did you do? We ran, of course! - What was that? - I don't know.
I've never seen such a weird creature.
Yeah, that's why I don't know! What the hell is this? Why aren't they coming off? Wait.
Eric, if they're not coming off with the wipers, that means Oh, no.
You've gotta be kidding.
Could it be inside this? [BOTH SCREAMING.]
[CAR CRASHES.]
And when we came to, it was morning.
Where was it that you were attacked? Could you be as specific as possible? No, nothing.
How about you? Nothing on my end either.
Seems like you were barking up the wrong tree.
If it were the devil, we would've seen something on these EMFs.
But I don't think those two were making it up.
And those other signs Or you were imagining things.
[RUSTLING.]
- Dean.
- Shh! Someone's there.
- Sam, watch out.
- I know.
Let's go.
We're sorry! We thought it was - the creature.
[EASY-LISTENING MUSIC PLAYING ON RADIO.]
DEAN: Look, we searched every spot and found nothing.
I'm out.
But it doesn't necessarily mean that it's not the devil.
I know it.
We've got to be missing something.
DEAN: Whatever.
Suit yourself.
I think you're doing too much thinking.
[STATIC ON RADIO.]
Huh? Is that because of the electromagnetic waves? [EASY-LISTENING MUSIC PLAYING ON RADIO.]
[STATIC ON RADIO.]
What the heck? Is it broken? Shh! Be quiet.
MIKE: Just stay quiet.
Something is there.
Could it be the creature? Timmy! Camera! Let's go.
Here we go.
TOBY: What the hell? What's this? All the food's gone.
Maybe a stray dog? Man, our breakfast.
What are we gonna eat? What is that? [MEN SCREAMING.]
[MONSTER ROARS.]
[MEN PANTING.]
The creature summoned the lightening? Are you sure? Yes.
We almost got killed.
We're not lying.
We have it on tape.
Where's the tape? I dropped it in the tent when we were running.
It's burned.
But it looked something like SAM: Dean, take a look at this.
- Huh? DEAN: What is that? SAM: A scale.
DEAN: It's too big for a fish.
SAM: I may have an answer.
- A "yam"? - Yeah.
Legendary demons in Southeast Asia.
They're said to be found around water.
Their bodies are said to be completely scaled.
Demons lurking in waters If it's really a yam, it won't stop killing until its desires are satisfied.
We must stop it.
Hey, we saw you the other day.
You can't be taking this demon stuff seriously.
We were talking about a movie plot.
We're screenwriters.
Hmm.
[DOOR OPENS.]
LINDA: Hi, Bruce.
What's going on? Why do you have that in your hand? Why do you think? We're exterminating the creature.
I'm going out with Willy and Chuck tonight to get him.
We can't let this thing keep running around loose in our town.
So, Ed, we need food for 10 tonight.
Did you say "exterminate"? Hmm? So what? We'd be happy to help, if you like.
Hey, Dean What the hell were you thinking telling them we'd help? Their guns won't be enough for the devil.
Besides, if it's demonic, then we're the experts.
But we're in over our heads.
We don't know how to exterminate a yam! DEAN: But we can't look the other way, can we? Dad would say the same thing if he were here.
[RUSTLING.]
[GASPS.]
[SQUIRREL CHITTERS.]
[SIGHS.]
[SCREAMS THEN GUNSHOT.]
- Dean! - What is it? Hey, Bruce! - What's the matter, Chuck? - It's Willy.
[SCREAMS.]
Hey, Chuck! [GUNSHOTS.]
- Stop! - Out of my way! What if you hit someone? Come on.
[RUMBLING NEARBY.]
SAM: Hey, Dean! What the hell's going on? Damn.
I don't believe this.
And we were there the whole time.
[GASPS.]
Hey, look at that.
Hey, Bruce! What is it? This is Chuck's.
[GASPS.]
BRUCE: Hey, Willy! Chuck! Chuck! [SOBBING.]
I'm sorry I couldn't [GROANS.]
- Huh? - They're alive? - Yo, Bruce.
- Morning.
You two What's going on here? You were both attacked, but there's not a scratch on your bodies.
- Don't tell me - What? I need to check on something.
So you were attacked but sustained very little injury? Yeah, I thought I was doomed when I was pulled underwater.
But the doctor said you were in no condition to receive visitors the other day.
Oh, that had nothing to do with the incident.
It was this.
My heart.
I had my heart checked after the incident, just in case.
The doctor told me that I would've died if I had been treated any later.
I knew it.
What are you talking about? I don't get it at all.
That thing, it was no yam.
Huh? What do you mean, the thing saved us? You saw us almost being killed by it.
SAM: But think again.
If Chuck wasn't dragged away and if you didn't go looking after him what would've happened? - Well Everyone would've been killed by that landslide.
CHUCK: So you're saying the landslide wasn't caused by the creature? And the same goes for us too? Yeah.
If you hadn't run from there that night [MEN SCREAMING.]
[MURMURING.]
Steve was attacked while fishing.
But had it not been for the incident he wouldn't have had his heart checked and would've been dead by now.
How do you explain these two? [CAR CRASHES.]
They got into an accident because of that creature.
Yes, but we're lucky it stopped at that.
What do you mean, lucky? This crash occurred moments before you two were attacked.
If you had kept running on that highway, you might've been in that crash.
This is unbelievable.
What the hell is that creature then? It's a specter living in the water.
BRUCE: A specter? There are legends of specters in the water all around the world.
SAM: The most famous kind is the Kappa in Japan.
BRUCE: Kappa? SAM: The Kappa are said to be very friendly.
They're not believed to be hostile toward humans.
[GRUNTS.]
Is that why it saved us? But for what purpose? I'm beginning to think it was for food.
It seems to have warned about danger in exchange for food.
Oh, is that why the food in the tent was all gone? Now that you mention it, a pack of gum in my back pocket was gone.
I'm still not convinced.
We're talking about a specter, after all.
Well, it may not be entirely impossible.
Oh, no, not you too, Ed.
Actually, back when I was a kid, the strangest thing happened.
ED: I was alone on a boat that day.
[WIND HOWLING.]
[YELLS.]
[GRUNTING.]
But then I found myself on the lakeside somehow.
And it was gone.
BRUCE: Gone? What was gone? A candy bar I had in my pocket that day.
So, Ed, you were also saved as a kid by? ED: I don't know for sure but it's not entirely impossible.
Anyway, without that creature, none of us would be here today.
SAM: They didn't seem to buy it.
Who can blame them? It may not be a demon, but a specter that saves humans? That's kind of weird for a specter.
But there are some things I can't figure out either.
What caused the signs if it wasn't a demon? The radio disturbance and the drought are facts.
- There's your answer.
- Huh? A factory was built a few years ago and the building has been interfering with the radio waves ever since.
And there's talk about the chemical waste from the factory causing the drought.
What about the dead swarm of bees, then? - That must've been the creature.
- Huh? Well, like Ed said, that specter has a sweet tooth.
That makes sense.
It was after the honey.
But hey, you were the one that got off on the wrong foot.
LINDA: So you finally got your car fixed? Yeah.
Oh, hey, are you leaving town? Yes, I saved up some cash.
Wanna ride with us? Thanks, but I already have a ride.
Hey, Linda, let's get going! Bye.
Hope to see you two again.
DEAN: Well Hey! What the heck? Damn it! Sam, we're going.
What luck! [SAM LAUGHS.]
DEAN: What are you laughing about? [THUNDER CRACKING.]
[ENGINE RUNNING.]
[LINDA CHANTING IN ANCIENT LANGUAGE.]
Yes.
Yes, it's me.
No, they haven't obtained the gun yet.
Yes, understood.
I will continue to keep an eye on them.
