The Ark (2023) s01e04 Episode Script

We Weren't Supposed to Be Awake

Our drift has taken us
right into a collision course
with an asteroid. Impact's in six hours.
- I'm such an idiot.
- Why?
- What do you see?
- The asteroid.
- The asteroid which has a tail.
- So it's a comet?
- Why does that matter now?
- Because comets are made of ice.
And ice means water.
Deploying drill.
- Water tanks are full!
- As of this moment,
all water restrictions have been lifted.
I'm so sorry.
I thought you were in a
relationship with Jasper.
That asshole is to
blame for Harris' death.
I've been to a lot of places.
I met a lot of people there.
I believe her name was Denise.
This biker guy wouldn't
take no for an answer
from this woman, and, um, check it out.
Drought's over. Drink up.
Good news. That was the sound of
our engines coming back online.
We're on the move.
Give us the bridge. Everyone out.
What's this about?
We found evidence implicating
a suspect in the murder.
Well, who is it?
You.
- I don't know what this is.
- Bullshit.
Jasper saw you kill a man.
You know what that does?
It gives you motive in his murder.
Yeah, well, it must
be fake. That's not me.
I have no choice, Lieutenant.
I'm putting you under house arrest.
Felix, that's not me in the video.
I didn't kill anyone.
In light of Garnet's arrest,
I'll be taking over as acting commander.
Well, there's a surprise.
I find it hard to believe that
Garnet would commit murder.
- Twice.
- If this proves anything,
it only provides evidence for one crime.
It does not prove she
killed Malcolm Perry.
Guys, can we just call
him Jasper, please?
We need to make a ship-wide
announcement, announce to the crew
that Garnet has betrayed their trust
- and is under investigation.
- Absolutely not.
This crew deserves the truth.
This is an ongoing investigation.
We're not parading our best lead to
every possible suspect on the ship.
Possible suspects? We as
good as caught her red-handed.
And she has a motive to cover up
the murder that's on that video.
It's a potential motive,
yes, but anyone on this ship
could have reason to kill
Jasper, including you.
- You can't be serious.
- This is my job. I take it very seriously.
- She's guilty.
- That is not your call to make.
I will not stand by and let
you ruin Lieutenant Garnet
before I've determined the truth.
Do not test me, Lieutenant Lane.
Did you hear that? A baby crying.
There are no babies on this ship.
Hello, Peter Potato, Olivia Onion.
Catie Cabbage. Hey. You look awful.
Hey. Hey, just tell
Papa Angus what's wrong.
I'll make it all better.
- Did you name the plants?
- What?
No. No.
Name the plants? No,
that would be dumb. No.
Then, uh, who you talking to?
I'm trying to determine why this
cabbage patch started wilting.
Right, and you thought
it would tell you?
Anyway, you need to come with me.
Why? I can't. I can't leave now.
- The plants need me now more than ever.
- Well, don't worry.
The kids will be fine
while Papa Angus is out.
- Lieutenant, I can't
- It's a new project.
Top priority. Come on. Let's go.
Whoa.
Cool.
I mean, it's terrible.
I'm glad you still have your hand.
Mm.
The glove is still intact?
It didn't all dissolve away?
The reaction stopped
when it got back inside.
Maybe when the airlock repressurized,
the oxygen-rich air
halted the reaction.
We need you to analyze
it, see if you can use it
to figure out exactly what hit the ship.
I don't think I'm the right person
for this job. You need a scientist.
You, um you grew
plants in space, right?
- Well, yeah, but
- And you made your own fertilizer
- and then figured out how to make a bomb out of it.
- Sure, but that's just
And then that thing that you
just said about the oxygen?
You're a scientist, Angus.
Science this.
Wait, what about Dr. Kabir?
Nope. The doc is overwhelmed.
Well, so am I.
- The plants are sick.
- Listen, kid.
We've all been working
double or triple duty
since we woke up, and
now it's your turn.
Use your microscopes and your
spectro-analysis thingamabob
and you figure it out.
It's called a mass spectrometer.
Can you account for your whereabouts
at the time of Malcolm Perry,
AKA Jasper Dades' death?
Here in my quarters alone.
Lieutenant, why don't you sit down?
This hostile attitude is not going
to help you prove your innocence.
I'm going to tell you a story
of what I think happened here.
Why do I get the feeling I'm
not gonna like this story?
I think that when we found out
Jasper was not who he said he was
and locked him up, he saw an
opportunity to save his ass.
He told you about the video, that
he had proof that you were a killer.
He told you he'd leak the video
if you tried to punish him
for impersonating Jasper.
So you did the only thing you could.
You killed him before he could talk.
That makes absolute sense,
but it's also absolutely
wrong. It's not me in the video.
I authenticated the footage.
It has not been faked.
- Don't lie to me.
- I'm not lying.
Then give me a reason to believe you.
That video was recorded in a
bar in Jacksonville, Florida,
- a few weeks before launch.
- How do you know that?
I just do.
Check the timestamp. You'll see.
- Why does it matter?
- Because
at that time I was
meeting with Captain Lester
- at the launch site.
- In London?
I was an ocean away from that bar
when that video was taken.
Where have you been?
I've just been checking
on engine cooling systems.
We should have the engines back
up to near light speed again soon.
I don't know wanna
talk about the engines.
I wanna talk about Garnet.
- What about her?
- You know what.
Strickland's being too easy
on her, don't you think?
No idea. We have to wait for
his investigation to close.
Do you hear yourself? The Lane
I know wouldn't stand for that.
I'm just trying to keep the ship afloat.
Look, Garnet is gonna
con her way out of this.
She'll take over again, and then
we'll have a murderer running the Ark.
She is dangerous.
Well, what are you suggesting we do?
I am suggesting that
we do everything we can
to ensure the safety of every
living soul on this ship.
We need Garnet out of
the picture permanently.
I never thought I'd hear such
drastic measures coming from you.
Yeah, well, we need to protect our crew.
Look, Brice, Garnet, she
deserves to be thrown out
of the airlock for what she did,
but if we do it before
Strickland proves her guilt,
I mean, no one will respect us.
We have to follow the letter
of the law on this one.
No. You see, you're in charge now.
So if you want justice, real justice,
then you need to take
it into your own hands.
Um, I think I might be going crazy.
Ever heard of knocking?
I could've been indecent.
Unless you're hoping that was the case.
Robert is here on the
Ark roaming the halls
carrying my crying daughter.
I can't seem to get the
crying out of my head,
and no matter how close
I get, I can't reach them.
But here's the thing, there's
no way they could be here.
0I left my husband and
daughter behind on Earth.
Husband! That explains your
reaction in the showers when we met.
No wonder you weren't interested in me.
After everything I've just
said, that's your takeaway?
I feel so much better now. Thank you.
Um, I'm seeing my husband and daughter.
Oh, that. Yes.
Not to worry. You're not alone.
I've been hearing weird stories
from crew all over the ship.
Natalie in engineering told me
that she keeps finding herself
with her toes in the sand
and beach waves rolling over her feet.
I think cabin fever has
been rearing its ugly head.
- Cabin fever?
- Yeah.
We weren't supposed to be
awake on the ship for this long.
An extended period of time
in a confined space like this?
Of course we're all
going a little cuckoo.
- That actually makes sense.
- Of course it does.
I mean, everyone just
needs rest, including you.
I mean, look at me. I've
been getting plenty of sleep,
and I'm not having any hallucinations.
Take a nap. It'll go away.
What do you think of this color?
Are you okay?
You look a little tired.
I'm fine. Just one minute.
Let's try that again.
You shouldn't be having this
much trouble taking blood.
This is med school 101, Sanji.
I can come another
time if now's not good.
No, no. Now is fine.
Taking blood is 10% skill, 90% mental.
- You're too in your head.
- Okay, you can relax.
And I'll be right back.
Three tries to take blood?
I know you're a better doctor than that.
You think I don't know I'm screwing up?
You were supposed to be here.
You were supposed to be in charge.
You were supposed to
mentor me, prepare me.
But you died along with
everyone else on our team,
so I'm the only doctor left,
and I'm doing the best I can.
You had to insist on being in the
officer's and elite cryopod bay.
Like it even mattered
when you were in stasis.
As I explained to you
then, it mattered because
it inferred status once we woke up.
Yeah, well, how's your status now?
Because if you had cryoed
in the bay I did,
you might be alive right now.
You need sleep, and you
need to get off those pills.
- You know better.
- You're right.
In fact, those are the two factors
probably causing me to see you.
It's too bad I've got
no other doctors to help
and no end in sight.
I don't know what you're waiting for.
I've just seen Strickland
head into the showers.
Now is our chance. Let's
go and get rid of Garnet.
Keep your voice down.
Someone might hear you.
Let them hear me. Listen, I
am ready to kill that traitor.
- She deserves it.
- People are staring. Be quiet.
Pathetic. You know, I
thought we were a team.
This ship could be ours.
But, no, you're gonna let
her get away with this.
We have to do this the right way.
Who you talking to?
Get out of my way or I'll kill you!
Get out of my way or I'll kill you!
Hey!
- Leave me alone!
- Hey, hey! Hey, stop it!
Stop it! There's nothing there!
It's in your head, all right?
Enough! It's all right!
Found him like this in the hall
going at it like he's in
the middle of a boxing ring.
You did the right
thing bringing him here.
Interesting. Do you think
he has a drug problem, too?
I hate to admit it,
but I've been having
strange visions as well.
My dead boss is standing behind you.
- What about you two?
- Not me, no.
- Haven't seen anything.
- Lane, I take it you've seen something or someone?
Oh, right, so that's who you
were talking to on the bridge.
- Who was it?
- Just Captain Lester.
What do you think is causing it, Doc?
I'm gonna run some tests,
see what answers I can find.
If you see anyone having a manic
episode, bring them straight here.
They're not only a danger to
themselves, but to everyone onboard.
Thank you.
Angus's farm isn't really
producing much that's edible yet,
but I managed to find these radishes
and I stole a leaf from
the first head of lettuce.
But don't tell anyone.
Angus will kill me.
Do you think that the
kitchen closed early
because of what happened to Vito?
I heard that he was hallucinating.
Do you ever take a second
to breathe when you talk?
I talk a lot when I'm nervous.
I told you. You don't
have to be nervous.
Hey, I'm the one who
asked you out, remember?
Shall we?
Thank you for those.
What exactly do you think
you're doing, young lady?
I know. Radish. Kinda hard, right?
Your wasting time with this boy.
Uh, um, excuse me.
I need to go freshen up real quick.
She seems a little young for you.
I was young for you, and
you didn't seem to mind.
Why do I keep seeing you,
huh? Am I being haunted?
Well, maybe it's because you're
distracted by pretty girls
instead of staying
focused on the mission.
- Can I ask you a question?
- Mm.
Did you sleep with me just to get me
to be a part of your secret mission?
At first, yeah.
But then
I started to enjoy you.
And I think you enjoyed me, too,
if I'm not mistaken.
So it was just sex.
I fell in love with you, you know?
I know.
We do what we have to do
to recruit the likeminded.
I don't think there are any of us
left alive on this ship.
That pretty young thing, she
certainly isn't one of us.
But based from what I
observed at the launch,
you know who I suspect will be?
- Who?
- Lieutenant Lane.
- Keep an eye on that one.
- I was thinking the same thing.
Mom's not here, okay? She's on Earth.
You're just freaking out
because this is your first real date.
Okay. Just take a deep breath.
And relax.
You absolutely should not
be relaxing, Alicia Nevins.
Go away! You're not real.
You're throwing away your potential
by spending time with this boy.
He likes me and I like him.
You should be pushing
yourself to be better,
excelling, not dating.
Not now, please.
What do you want from me?
Hmm? To say I'm sorry?
To say I regret getting on
this godforsaken ship at all?
Because I do. I never should've left.
If I could be in two
places at once, I would be,
but I can't, so
She was telling the truth.
She can't be in two places at once.
Brice, we need to talk.
There were some inconsistencies
in your medical history.
What are you hiding from us?
What the hell are you talking about?
Listen, you need to
let me out right now.
- I can't do that, Brice.
- Let me out.
- You could be endangering yourself and others.
- No, no, no, no, no.
To be safe, I'm going to run
a complete blood analysis.
No, no, no, no, no, no. Absolutely not.
Let me go. Let me out! Now!
Get off me! Help! Help!
Are you all right?
- Wait, was I just, uh
- Hallucinating.
Yeah, seems to be going around.
I just ran away from my mom
who was haunting me in the locker room.
What do you see?
Right.
You verified my intel. Why
aren't you releasing me?
How did you know the
timestamp would match?
- Does it matter? I was right.
- Every detail matters.
This is a murder investigation.
Right now you're our lead suspect.
- I just gave you an alibi.
- For the murder on that video,
not for the one on this ship.
And the video still gives you motive
if Jasper was blackmailing you.
He had nothing to blackmail me for.
- That's not me in the tape.
- Please explain that.
How is that not you?
What I'm about to tell you is
classified above your level.
If you tell anyone, it's a
court martial-able offense.
I'm not military.
I'm asking you to agree
to confidentiality, please.
I can't agree to confidentiality
until I know if it's
information that helps my case.
Her name's Denise. Denise Garnet.
We were clones born in a
classified government lab.
We never knew where
the donor cell came from
other than that it was completely human.
Then they introduced additional
experimental DNA into our systems.
They used different DNA
strands in each of us,
testing us for different outcomes.
Mine was tardigrade DNA.
I don't know what they put in Denise.
Since we were clones, we
were identical in every way,
so we were the perfect subjects
to compare and contrast.
They wanted to see if
they could push the limits
of human function for space travel.
How fast could we
recover from zero gravity?
How long could we last without oxygen?
For example, I can withstand
more solar radiation than you can.
Then one day when we were older,
Dr. Hall was testing how
long we could hold our breath
and Denise suddenly started acting out.
Her brain was rejecting
the gene augmentation.
She'd have these violent outbursts.
One minute she was totally fine,
and the next
she'd turn into a
completely different person.
When I returned to Florida,
after my meeting in London,
I found Denise's body.
She'd taken her own life.
I'm so sorry.
Cloning was outlawed years ago
partially because of
adverse reactions like that.
Which is why the program is top secret,
which is why I'm top secret.
You must know how people
feel about people like me.
They fear what they don't understand.
I completed the genetic trials
and was assigned to this Ark
to see if all worked.
One final experiment.
No one else knows and
no one else can know.
Are we clear?
I asked Cat to join us to
present about the hallucinations.
The hallucinations
initially seemed harmless,
but have quickly taken on
more dangerous side effects.
What the hell is she doing here?
I concluded Lieutenant
Garnet is innocent.
How?
That information is classified.
Classified by who?
GSA.
I told you she was gonna
con her way out of this.
We should've killed her
when we had the chance.
All right, so if she
didn't do it, then who did?
Strickland has thoroughly explored
every avenue brought to him thus far.
I have faith in his ability
to close the investigation.
Now get me up to speed.
Bio shelter's a mess, plants
are dying, Angus is a wreck.
Half of my crew are in med bay.
Engines can't get up to near light speed
with that many people out.
What do we know about
these hallucinations?
Med bay is filling up fast.
Kabir's trying to figure it out.
That's new.
And not good.
Sedate her!
- It's getting worse.
- And it's happening fast.
Okay, okay.
I've been waiting for you.
I heard about people having visions,
and I was so hoping I'd get to see you.
Well
I'm here now.
I miss you so much.
Have you tried finding closure?
- Closure?
- During your last session,
you told me that you
blamed the imposter,
the fake Jasper, for Harris' death.
I don't wanna talk about him.
In order to help you heal,
I need to know how
deep that hatred runs.
What do you mean?
Did you hate Jasper enough to hurt him,
kill him even?
Oh, my. You did.
Please, you have to keep my secret.
Secret? You're a murderer.
We have patient-client privilege.
You can't tell anyone or else.
Or else what? You'll kill me, too?
I'm sorry. I have to do this.
Then I have to do this.
I was just coming to see you.
I started having hallucinations.
Harris.
No more sessions today.
In fact, all sessions
canceled till further notice.
You don't need her
or anyone else for that matter.
"It's your turn to
pull double duty, Angus.
We've all done it Angus."
What does Brice know about double duty?
I bet he doesn't even know
what a mass spectrometer does.
I thought I told you to relax, Angus.
Nope! No, no.
You're not real. You are not real.
This place is so romantic,
don't you think?
The real Garnet would never
say something like that.
You're just a figment
of my subconscious.
Oh, I'm as real as you want me to be.
- I'm just trying to help.
- I don't need your help.
I need answers.
We're gonna end up with no
food and everyone will blame me.
You're my genius. You'll figure it out.
Maybe they need some more water.
Well, I guess you don't
think I'm such a genius
if you don't think I'm
carefully regulating
the amount of water that
- You're a genius.
- Mm-hmm.
If you were real, I'd kiss you.
Actually, no I wouldn't.
You're my boss. That's weird.
- Dr. Kabir, it's the water.
- What?
The comet.
Hold on, Angus. Hold on. Okay.
Okay.
Damn it, he's unresponsive.
What was he trying to tell me?
Did he say it's in the comet water?
On the right, you can
see Vito's blood sample.
You'll notice an anomaly
amongst the red blood cells.
The same anomaly is
present in every patient.
- And this is our water.
- But how did it get through our filtration system?
It was specifically designed
to stop trace elements.
Well, the foreign toxin is
smaller than a water molecule.
It's a compound not found on Earth,
so our systems couldn't
have been prepared for it.
Hate to rush you, but
you're running out of time.
You all are.
I ran the toxin through the GC mass spec
to get a better idea of
what we're dealing with.
I'm guessing it's not good.
It's structure is similar
to ergot alkaloids on Earth.
LSD is a derivative of
those same compounds.
Well, that explains the hallucinations.
This new toxin is
targeting brain function,
cardiovascular systems,
and electrical signals in the body.
Hallucinations, seizures, coma.
The disease is progressing at
different speeds in different people.
There's no predicting when
people will seize or go into coma.
Next, I'm afraid
people will start dying.
I'll walk you back to the med bay.
I want to assess the situation.
- I'll come too.
- No, I don't need a babysitter.
Strickland cleared me. Move on.
I need to tell you something,
something classified.
I figured this might have been
more than a friendly stroll.
I'm a clone. My DNA has tar
- Tardigrade genomes.
- You know?
When I was assigned to the Ark,
I was briefed on high priority
classified medical conditions.
Dr. Hall oversaw your program, correct?
- You knew Edward?
- Well, he was Dr. Hall to me,
my boss and mentor.
He recruited me for the Ark
even after he saw me at my worst.
- He was a good man.
- Yeah.
Closest thing I ever had to a father.
She never told me that.
I don't know if this will be a
comfort or unsettling for you,
but I've been hallucinating Dr. Hall.
He's standing beside us.
I wish I could talk to him.
- This ship can make you feel so
- Alone?
You can trust me.
The one thing I don't understand
is why come to me now
about your genetics?
I've been drinking the water
just as long as everyone else,
but I've had no hallucinations.
If you can find out why,
maybe you can find a cure.
Garnet's blood produces a
protein the rest of us don't have.
I guess it's a result of the tardigrade
DNA you put in her as a child.
- It's creating a protein that neutralizes the toxin.
- That makes sense.
We chose tardigrade DNA because
of its self-healing nature.
If I can synthesize enough
and determine a distribution mechanism,
maybe we could solve this thing.
Can I speak with you for a moment?
I need to know what you told Strickland
to weasel your way out of custody.
Here I was thinking you were
pulling me aside to apologize
for wrongly accusing me of murder.
If the GSA classified the intel,
I have a right to know what it is.
The investigation is under
Strickland's jurisdiction, not yours.
He's not even military. You
and I have the same rank.
Then maybe you should
start treating me like it
instead of trying to undercut
everything I say and do.
- I need you to trust me.
- Why?
You don't even trust
me enough to let me
Lane? Lane?
Dr. Kabir! Quick, it's Lane!
Oh, this just gets better and better.
What do what do we do?
How the hell should I know?
Tell me you know what Kabir was
planning to do with that vial.
I have some idea, but I don't
have a clue what we do next.
All right.
I came as fast as I could.
We need you to decipher
Kabir's work fast.
It could be a cure.
- Huh.
- Is that a good huh or a bad huh?
The sample from patient
X has an unusual protein
that appears to neutralize
the toxin in the blood.
Kabir was trying to synthesize it.
- Do you think it could work?
- Maybe.
I wonder why the symbol
for water is here.
She was creating a
water soluble protein.
She synthesized this
sample to be hydrophilic.
So did she want to put it in the water?
But isn't the water how the toxins
have been poisoning everyone?
- Why not inject the cure directly?
- We don't have time.
Injecting crew one at a time with
no medical staff would take forever.
It looks like Dr. Kabir
thought that putting the protein
in the water system would create
a faster distribution system
and make the water safe for future use.
So you're just saying
we need to put whatever's
in this vial into the water
and that's gonna cure us all?
First, we need a whole lot more
and hope that it cures us all.
- Hope?
- Her notes are pretty thorough.
So it's an educated guess,
but a guess just the same.
Do it.
Oh.
I knew you'd figure it out.
You're the one who figured
out it was in the water.
Actually, Lieutenant Garnet
said something that reminded me.
I mean, she did in a hallucination.
So I guess technically it
was me who figured it out.
Uh, Angus?
Our hallucinations are
tied to actual fears
or fantasies in our brains.
- They are?
- Yes.
So, um
why were you hallucinating
about Lieutenant Garnet?
Oh, uh, no reason.
I mean, I don't fear her.
Or fantasize about her.
Which would imply something
I would never even think.
I mean, no, she's my
boss. That would be weird.
Hey.
You good?
Welcome back.
- What happened?
- You were in the middle
of yelling at me for keeping secrets
and then you seized
and went into a coma.
- Huh.
- By the way, you're welcome.
- For what?
- That's classified.
I'm proud of you, you know that?
- Really? You are?
- Of course I am.
Look what you did today.
Just don't let that boy distract you.
You're wasting your time with that one.
You know what I think?
I think you're jealous.
Maybe a little.
And I don't want you
wasting your time with her.
Get closer to Lieutenant Lane.
I don't have to listen to you anymore.
- Sure you do.
- No.
She won't drink the water.
- I don't want it.
- You'll die.
Oh, honey.
You don't want to say
good-bye to Harris, do you?
Do you feel this?
This is real. My hand in yours.
This ship is real.
This crew who depends on you is real.
Harris is gone.
- Cat's right about almost everything she said.
- Almost?
He's not gone. Our
hallucinations are proof
that the people who matter
to us never truly leave us.
Harris came back to you to
show you he's still with you.
- And he will be even after you drink the water.
- Yeah.
Holy shit.
I have a formal request
that we stop bringing
space stuff onto the ship.
What are you talking about?
I finished analyzing the
residue from your glove.
Do you want a drumroll?
Whatever hit us is made of
a completely unknown element.
Separate and apart from
the toxin in the water?
Yes, that was a complex molecule,
a combination of stuff
we've seen before.
This is a basic element.
Think high school chemistry,
the periodic table.
Yeah, I skipped high school chemistry.
Except this element, it's
not on the periodic table.
So are you any closer to
knowing what hit us or not?
Well, it's made of something that
hasn't been discovered on Earth,
which means it probably
doesn't exist on Earth.
That means it's found somewhere else.
Right, I feel like you're
keeping the punchline to yourself.
It could've been a meteor
or some other rock formation,
- or
- Or what?
- It could've been a weapon.
- A weapon?
Engineered to take advantage
of this dangerous element.
But who could've attacked us?
We're the only people in
history to go this far in space.
I didn't say people.
