Kingdom

Previously on the Bible 'In the beginning 'God created the heavens and the earth.
'Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit.
'Since Cain killed Abel, 'God has seen too much evil in human hearts.
' God warned me, he told me to build a boat.
He is cleansing the earth for a new beginning.
- Abraham? - God has spoken to me.
He will lead us to a new home.
He has promised descendants as numerous as the stars.
- You will have a child.
- I can't.
It's too late for me.
Abraham, where is your wife? 'Though she is barren, Sarah will have a son.
'You will name him Isaac.
' 'Have I not shown you enough faith?' 'Abraham!' A sacrifice I love my boy! 'He will lead us to a new home, he has promised descendants as numerous as the stars.
' 'Moses, I will be with you.
' - Aargh! - Wait, please! - Who are you? - My name is Moses.
'God has sent me to set you free.
' - why are you here, Moses? - Let my people go.
Freedom? They're free to choose slavery or death! 'All my life I have been pharaoh's.
' - I will never be a slave again.
- Joshua, God is with us.
The Egyptians, they're here! Lord! Follow me! Bring me Moses! God has delivered us from slavery! Joshua, we have new laws, preparing us for the promised land.
Abraham's dream, our future.
You are our people's future, Joshua.
You must take the land promised to Abraham and all of his descendants as numerous as the stars.
Lord, I was with Moses when he handed down these commandments.
I was witness to the covenant, the promise of a holy nation.
Help me to forge that nation, to lead your people to inherit their land.
Joshua! The Lord brought us out from Egypt, he promised us this land.
And soon it will be ours! Come! - Are you ready? - We'll search the whole city.
Just find me a way in.
We must take Jericho.
It's all that stands between us and the promised land.
Hey! Hey! Only collect water in daylight.
The Israelites can attack at any time.
Rahab, my little whore.
What are you doing out, hmm? Go home.
Shh! What are you men doing here? Get out! Get out! Israelites! Brother - For Israel! - For Israel.
Quick! Over here! Get more men! We've got to get inside.
Look out.
They must not escape.
Go door to door.
In here! Everyone, return to your homes! Hello? Shh! Keep quiet and I promise I won't hurt him.
Swear? Yes - You're Israelites.
- You've heard about us? You have a God who commands the winds and parts the seas.
He saved us from slavery.
We are his chosen.
This whole city is terrified of you.
How can we fight a people whose God can do that? Open up! Open up! - Back inside! - Open the door! Can we get out that way? Help us, and we will help you.
Go.
I'll stall them if I can.
Open the door! - Come with us.
- I can't.
My family When our army comes, hang this on your door so they will know not to harm you.
You'll be passed over.
Stay here.
Joshua! Tell me, did you find a way in? - Is there a weakness? - Not in the walls.
But in their hearts.
Joshua, we met a woman.
She thinks God has taken the city already.
The people melt in fear because they know he is with us.
God is with us! But we've still to find a way in.
Lord, when I was a slave, you showed me your love and your power.
You have given me new life.
Would you have us turn back? Who who are you? I pray you are with us and not with our enemies.
I am with God.
Commander of the Lord's army.
What does he ask of us? The Lord parted the waters for Moses.
For you he will split rock.
This is what you must do 'March around the city once a day with all the armed men.
' do this for six days.
'Carry the ark with you.
It contains God's commandments.
' then, on the seventh day, march around the city seven times.
'Then the priests should make a long blast 'with the ram's horn.
' as soon as you hear the sound of the trumpet, all the people shall shout a great shout.
It's happening! 'Glory will come.
' He truly is the shaper of the world.
Jericho is ours! We give this city to the Lord! Destroy everything! Only Rahab the prostitute and her family may be spared, for God said she must be spared for the help she gave us.
God has kept his promise.
If we obey Lord, anything is possible! Israel! Israel! Israel! Israel! The Israelites have entered the promised land.
But there are enemies on every side, and a new foe is coming the Philistines.
A hundred years after Joshua, the 12 tribes of Israel have spread out across the promised land.
But hostile neighbors surround them.
Better armed and better trained, the Philistines are the deadliest threat.
Without great leaders like Moses or Joshua to unite them, the Israelites must rely on local heroes called judges.
People like Samson.
Mother, come.
When will this all stop? I don't know.
You must fight them.
It's what God wants you to do, Samson.
It's why God created you.
Remember what his messenger told me.
Don't be afraid.
Though you are barren, God will give you a son.
Thank you.
But listen carefully, there are conditions.
See to it that you drink no alcohol and eat nothing unclean.
And when your son is born, his hair must never be cut.
This will be the sign that the boy is a Nazarite.
He is given to God, from his birth to his death.
He will begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines.
Your strength comes from God.
Your duty is to drive the Philistines away.
Instead of fighting the Philistines, Samson falls in love and marries one.
- Let me talk to her.
- Of course.
Hmm Mother, does love not come from God? What would you have me do? Reject the woman I fell in love with just because she's a Philistine? Will your love protect us from them? Samson! Samson! We need to send these Israelites a message, make it clear to them.
They cannot take our women.
Our people should never mix.
How are we going to get to him? We're not going to get to him.
Open up! - Where is Samson? - I don't know.
- Where is he? - He's not here.
Father! Father! No! Father! No! No! - Do it.
- Please, no.
You are a disgrace to our people.
- Please, please - I beg you, don't touch her! Father! No! No! No! Please I'm begging you, no.
Please no! For my wife! - Over here! - Help us! Help us! Please, free us! Free us! Get the israelite! One man did this.
Where is he? His people must know.
You! You will bring Samson to me.
And you will do it quickly.
And for every day I do not see him, one of you will die.
Starting now.
No no! No! Please, no! Samson? Samson? Samson? Samson! Samson? Samson? Are you there? Mother? I wasn't expecting you.
Forgive me.
We have come to reason with you, Samson.
- Reason? - You must stop the killing.
Please.
For every Philistine you kill, two more appear, seeking revenge.
As they did to me, so I have done to them.
The Philistines are our rulers now? Everyone must do what they think is right.
No, Samson.
You must do what is right for your people.
For God.
Not for yourself.
You must give yourself up, Samson.
Mother, is this what God wants? I'm not sure.
Sometimes God leads us in ways we cannot see.
God will guide your choices.
Come Stand aside! Stand back! Get back! Stay back! You have your prize.
All I see is a common murderer.
No worse than you.
Why did you kill my wife? To teach you and your people a lesson.
I gave myself up to save my people.
Will you leave them alone now? If I had more men, I'd drive you all back into the wilderness where you belong.
I'd happily kill all of you.
Kill him.
'Your duty is to drive the Philistines away.
' My Lord God of Israel, is that you? Lord is this what you want from me? Guide me, please.
Come.
Come! Thank you.
What is your name? My name is Delilah.
Samson was given great strength.
To drive out the Philistines.
But now, he is distracted by Delilah.
Dagon, God and creator, Lord of our land, deliver into our hands our enemy, Samson, destroyer of our nation.
We have news of Samson.
He's got a new woman.
A Philistine woman.
Another one? What's her name? Delilah.
I know her.
Bring her to me.
Delilah Thank you for coming.
- As beguiling as ever.
- What do you want? Well, let's just have a little talk.
About Samson.
An interesting choice.
Not one of us, of course.
Why are you with him? Why do you want to know? Don't tell me you care about him.
- Is he in love with you? - Ask him yourself.
He's butchered hundreds of our people.
He's changed.
He's a different man since he's met me.
Do you really believe that? He will go on killing until we find a way to stop him for good.
Where does he get his strength? What's his secret? I don't know.
- He won't tell me.
- Try to convince him.
Have you seen what he's capable of? Maybe this will help Call it danger money.
It's all for you.
Uh-uh.
Not now.
Not until we know his secret.
Why are you so strong? God is with me, Delilah.
He makes me strong.
What do you mean, 'God is with you'? How does he make you strong? My mother was barren.
God brought her a child, me.
But there are things I must not do.
Such as? I have never cut my hair.
I am forbidden.
It's a sign of my devotion.
- If I cut my hair, I - What, my love? What if you cut your hair? My God will take away all my strength.
I'll be as weak as everyone else.
You don't believe me? No, Samson, I do.
- Samson! - Huh? Take him! What? What have you done? Don't feel bad.
Everyone has their price.
Delilah Take a good look.
And remember the day you first met the lovely Delilah.
You will never see her again.
Betrayed and blinded, Samson's battle with the Philistines is all but over, and with it, the dreams of an israelite homeland.
I am weak.
Stand me against something.
- Lord - Quiet! Lord If I am yours, remember me now.
Strengthen me once more.
Your God has abandoned you, Samson.
You are the man who took away my eyes.
I am glad of it.
For the darkness helps me think.
Your God has deserted you and taken your strength with him.
No I can see him more clearly than ever.
He wants me to destroy you all! It's over, Samson! Stop him! Kill him! Now! Samson's sacrifice kills thousands, but he could never defeat the Philistines on his own.
The prophet Samuel has urged the people to unite in God's name.
There is no one like the Lord.
But after decades of struggle, he too has failed to halt the Philistines.
Prophet, we await you.
And the people's patience is wearing thin.
So what is it that troubles you? We are grateful, prophet.
You have led us for many years God has led us! Samuel You are not as young as you were.
We are worried.
Who will speak to the Lord after you? Who will lead us against the Philistines? My sons will inherit my place.
Your sons are corrupt.
My sons have been brought up to trust in God and obey his laws! Everything I have done for you I have done because I walk in God's ways! We know that they take bribes.
Everyone knows it! They shame your good name.
So, when you are gone, and the Philistines return, and we look to your sons to call on God Will God answer? No, he will not.
Then what do you want? A king.
As other nations have.
But look what other nations' kings do.
They become tyrants, they make slaves of their people.
Not if they are chosen by God.
Anointed by his righteous prophet.
By you.
You would reject our God? God promised us this land.
This is God's kingdom.
He is our only king.
You have the ear of the Lord, Samuel.
You must ask him to choose a king for us.
Leave me alone, all of you! I have given everything.
Now they have rejected me.
And you, God.
But if you say I should give them a king, then of course I will.
But who should it be? Victory! Saul! Saul! God is with me! Instead of sacrificing the enemy, Saul lets his men keep their plunder.
You had one task! One simple command from God! - Destroy everything! - We followed his commands.
Then what is this bleating of goats in my ears? What is this lowing of cattle and wailing of lambs? Can the dead cry out? And who is this pagan king? He is to be put to death later.
When the Lord says spare, you spare.
- When he says kill - Samuel! You are our prophet, but I am your king! What the Lord gives he can take away.
Are these God's words or yours? Your descendants could have ruled for over a thousand years.
But today God has forsaken you.
More divine words? God has torn your power from you.
He wants a man after his own heart.
- Bring me wine.
- Sire.
- Do you hear me? Now! - Yes, sire.
Perhaps I have been hasty.
I should ask Samuel's forgiveness.
- Bring Samuel to me.
- He's gone, majesty.
Gone? Samuel! Lord I thought I was doing your work fighting for a homeland.
Building your kingdom.
Young man! What is your name? David, sir.
My name is David.
In trying to please his men, Saul has displeased God.
Now God has instructed his prophet Samuel to find a new king.
I anoint you, David of Bethlehem, to be the next king of Israel once Saul is dead.
Father what's wrong? Tell me what's wrong! - Nothing is wrong.
- It was a great victory.
I need rest, that is all.
Sleep.
Sleep Lord, forgive your servant! In time, David becomes an attendant in Saul's court.
A king in waiting.
To secure the promised land, the Israelites must defeat the Philistines, but king Saul has lost God's blessing.
Now he faces the Philistine's greatest champion: Goliath.
Will one of you fight me, Israelites! You win, and the Philistines will be your slaves.
I win, and you will be our slaves.
- Someone must fight him! - Not you, Jonathan.
The warrior who defeats him will be a rich man.
Not one man in Israel? Not one of 'God's people'? I'll do it.
David! You're no soldier, you're a Shepherd.
Yes, a Shepherd.
As I protect my sheep, God will protect me.
Where is your faith? Where is your God? I will kill him.
You'll need this.
I'll be better without it.
Yea though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for you are with me, thy rod and staff, they comfort me.
You anoint my head with oil.
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.
Israel has found a champion! Don't waste my time, little boy.
You are too young to die.
I will fight you! Father, he did it.
David did it! Let us make slaves of them! David! My wolf in Shepherd's clothing! You've saved my kingdom, my Shepherd warrior! Come with me, brother.
David joins Saul's army and battles the Philistines for decades.
He becomes a warrior a leader a hero.
Saul! Saul! Saul! Saul has killed thousands! Saul! Saul! Saul! - You hear that, father? - I hear.
Saul! Saul! Saul! David has killed tens of thousands! David! David! David! He deserves their praise.
He'll want my crown next.
I thought you'd fall off your horse.
I did! I killed a man when I landed on him! At one point there were two men in front of me David! Come here.
So once again, you are our champion.
You have killed thousands.
- Tens of thousands! - Of course.
Tens of thousands.
Our people are very grateful to you.
The Lord blessed us all.
I would like to reward you.
I offer you my daughter, Michal.
I'm very honored, majesty.
David, we're brothers now! In return one hundred dead Philistines.
Hmm? What say you? One hundred dead Philistines, slain by your own hand.
Father He's risked his life enough, no? - What if he doesn't return? - I shall return.
God willing.
You love him like a brother, don't you? I do.
As Abel, no doubt, once loved Cain.
He wants our crown.
Can't you see? No.
He's loyal to us both.
Nonsense! - My lady, he's back! - David? He's back! David's back! A few mementos for you.
And these.
Trophies taken from each of their bodies.
- From a hundred men? - Two hundred.
God was with me.
Michal! Get out.
All of you.
Get out! Father, what demons possess you? If it wasn't for him, we'd all be slaves and you would not be king.
And with him, you never will be! Your father, the king, wishes to see David.
He can't.
He's Not well.
'Not well'? 'Not well, ' you say? Well, we shall see.
We shall see! 'Not well'! David? Yes, yes Yes You have helped him escape.
You would rather be queen than see your own father king? - No! - You'd betray your own brother! - Father, you need to rest! - So! Even my own children plot against me! David! David! Wherever you go, I shall hunt you down! Saul was made king to unite the Israelites and remove the Philistines from the promised land.
But now he is obsessed with destroying David.
Priests! Your king wishes to speak with you.
- Come here! - Come on, out! David was here, wasn't he? You sheltered him.
This is God's house.
We offer shelter to all his people.
Kill him.
I said kill him! Kill all of them.
I have served you faithfully, Lord.
As faithfully as a man can, and yet still it seems it is not enough! God is with me! Lord! Do you hear your servant? Majesty! David? Why do you pursue me when I've done you no harm? I could have killed you.
Your life was mine to take.
Why didn't you take it then? The Lord may revenge the harm you have done to me, but only evildoers do evil deeds, so my hand will not touch you.
Ever.
And God will reward you, and you will be king! You are my king.
And when you have my crown, will you not kill my descendants, - bury my name? - I will not.
- No? - I swear.
No? Come, then.
Come.
We'll go home together.
Why did you not kill him when you had the chance? Because he's one of the anointed.
It's up to God to decide his destiny.
Father! Father! Father! Father, the Philistine army is in the next valley near Gilboa.
Jonathan, David is very near.
Forget about David.
You must defend your kingdom.
That is your duty.
You're right.
We must prepare for battle.
Tell the men we leave for Gilboa.
Tell them we leave at dawn.
- Jonathan, save yourself! - No, we stand together! Father, come on! Come on! Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan! Jonathan! No, my son No, why? Dear God were my sins so great that all of Israel must suffer? A crushing victory for the Philistines.
And Saul? Dead.
You think the death of God's anointed is a trivial thing? What of Jonathan? Captured? Get rid of him! How are the mighty fallen.
We can go home! The people will look to you now to defend them.
Unite them! Our time has come.
Yes, my king.
King David.
David gathers followers, but to unite Israel he needs a capital city.
Jerusalem Our new home.
Now we just need to find a way in.
How do we do that? There is one way.
We'll wait till nightfall.
What do we do know? Here For Israel.
Look out! To arms! Uriah! Israel! Jerusalem is now David's city, a new center of power for the Israelites and a home for the ultimate symbol of their bond with God.
The ark of the covenant! Your wife's far too pretty for you, my friend.
- You're right! - Majesty Come.
- You don't mind, Uriah? - I mind! Now God is truly with me.
Your majesty? Ah, prophet Look.
My temple for the ark.
For the Lord.
The world's never seen anything like it.
The Lord came to me last night.
He's pleased with our work? The Lord told me the house of David will rule Israel forever.
- We are blessed.
- Your son will be king.
Your son will build the temple.
- My temple? - God's temple.
God's temple.
A kingdom forever.
Thank you, Nathan.
Your majesty.
As you requested.
Leave us.
- Bathsheba.
- Majesty.
David.
Is there news of my husband? No.
No, nothing like that.
He's safe enough, I believe.
Although he is far away.
Fighting the enemy.
But you didn't go? No need, not with men like Uriah to do it for me.
I am loyal to my husband.
What about your king? This is wrong.
No one need know.
Bathsheba becomes pregnant.
God's chosen king breaks his commandments.
Uriah, my friend.
Welcome.
You sent for me, majesty.
- How's the war going? - Well.
Very well.
And your commander, Joab, all is well with him? All is well.
- Your fellow soldiers? - They fight well.
Excellent.
You can give me a fuller report in the morning.
I'm sure for now you'd rather be with your wife.
- I cannot stay with my wife.
- Of course you can.
While my men are camped in open country? Fighting the enemy? This is a holy war.
How could I go to my home and spend the night with my wife? That does you credit, Uriah, but, man-to-man, who's to know? I will know.
Good man.
Then let's drink.
Wine! David cannot force Uriah to sleep with Bathsheba, so he finds another way to conceal his adultery.
'"Commander Joab, I order you to send Uriah '"to where the fighting is fiercest '"and abandon him there to die.
"' we've been richly blessed.
You think you can sweep what you've done under the carpet? You took everything from your most loyal servant, Uriah.
- He deserved your respect.
- I did respect him.
Really? You took his wife, then you took his life Prophet! You think God doesn't see everything? The Lord has spoken to me.
He will bring disaster on your house for the contempt you have shown the Lord.
- No.
- No! He will take your son.
We shall see.
Anything, Lord Please spare my child.
Tell me Tell me what to do.
Oh First my husband, now my son.
We are cursed.
But but I was anointed.
God blessed me.
A king is never above his God.
You were supposed to rule in his name, not your own.
We're finished.
Everyone will see that God has left us.
Prophet? Even though you are weak, he loves you David.
You have forged God's nation on earth.
Take comfort in each other.
You will have another son.
- Be careful, Solomon.
- Let him play.
It's the house of the Lord.
One day he'll have to build it.
Solomon will build God's temple.
But like his father, he'll find it impossible to obey God's commandments.
You worship foreign idols.
You defile your God! Jerusalem! God is bringing disaster from Babylon.
Whatever's left of Jerusalem help yourselves! Daniel.
What do we do? Just bow our heads and serve this monster? I will make them bow.
Lord, save me! Argh! Cyrus will set us free if the prophecy is right.
I promised them freedom to worship.
It is merely a test of their loyalty.
It's a trap for all of us.
They want us dead.
There is one to come, who will baptize with fire.
I am just the voice in the wilderness, preparing the way for the Lord.
- What are we going to do? - Change the world.
