The Brave (2017) s01e13 Episode Script

Close to Home Part 2

1 Previously on "The Brave" Three days ago, an Ohio-class submarine on patrol in the Atlantic went dark.
Turns out the person responsible is a 16-year-old American girl.
They took her against her will.
We need to bring her home immediately.
Hey! The man you're looking at is Alex Hoffman, decorated field officer gone rogue.
Been dead for the last nine years.
Dalton, you need to button that man up, and I mean airtight.
Okay, but what about the girl? Clearly, this is no coincidence that he was there.
He is radioactive.
Another sub's gone offline.
This time, in the South China Sea.
Where is she? Please don't tell me that you think Patricia's coming here to help you find Verina.
She's coming here for me.
Hello, Alex.
Hello, P.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
I don't think you understand, Alex.
They found me.
They found the safe house.
The room was full of suits.
Promise me you'll take this seriously.
I am taking this seriously.
I'm just not worried.
You worried, P? I gotta admit, this is a headache I'd rather not have.
Oh, yeah.
Well, sooner or later, it happens to anyone who does great things.
It's a storm.
You'll get through it.
We both will.
Remember, gray BMW, license plate 341.
Your train leaves at 4:00.
Reservation under Cayhill.
All right Cayhill? Couldn't come up with anything better than that? Such as? I was thinking Campbell.
I only use that name when I want to scare you off.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Thank you, Patricia.
This closes an ugly chapter in our history, and your courage won't be forgotten.
That's not fair, P.
You look so good.
Captain, pull him out of the room.
Then clear the space for me.
I'm bound, hand and foot, on a base surrounded by thousands of soldiers, personally guarded by five highly trained killers.
Six if you count the deputy director.
[WHISPERING.]
Look, this guy knows where Verina is.
I mean, he's got her somehow.
[WHISPERED.]
That's why I need to talk to him.
[SOMBER MUSIC.]
You're not going to ask me how I did it? No.
You're not the least bit curious? No.
[SCOFFS.]
You were so good on the phone.
- Alex - Not one pause, - not one slip.
- Don't be cruel.
I'm not the one who had the other one killed.
No, but you're the one who put the gun in my hand.
What'd you think? Nobody would know what you did? Bribes, back-room deals, murders I thought someone did know.
Oh, I knew you were coloring outside the lines, Alex.
I encourage that.
But I had no idea that you had become all you beheld.
No other way to win, P.
Someone has to be willing to do what it takes to win.
Oh, so it was all for the cause? Yes.
I was able to cross-reference a few of your new identities with freelance high-level murders.
Corporate and government espionage.
A dead man has to do what it takes.
No.
You don't have to kill a father.
You don't have to kidnap a 16-year-old girl! A 16-year-old girl! I thought you'd warn me, P.
, right up to the moment I opened the door.
- Spare her.
- I thought you'd warn me.
You and me, we're going to have to pay for your sins.
I've come to peace with that.
Spare the girl.
Spare the girl.
She's an innocent.
It's done.
You can let me go.
Wow.
You are a clever girl, Verina.
How'd you get to be so clever? My dad.
Right.
And I'm sorry about that.
Here's the thing though, even if I did believe you, I'd be stupid to let you go before the job is finished.
But I did everything you asked.
Yes, but you're staying, comfortably or uncomfortably.
That's up to you.
But after it's all done, you'll let me go, right? Yeah.
Of course.
Now, let's keep that sub on track, shall we? [SOMBER STRING MUSIC.]
What's on your mind, top-shotter? Keep thinking about what Hoffman said here.
How by capturing him, we somehow destroy Patricia.
Hey, you know every word that man says seems to be poison.
Yeah, but you know how this works, Preach.
The guy wraps himself in a flag, he walks out the door, and he does things that jeopardize everything you and I fight for.
Just like a rapid dog, with a guy like that, you do one thing, you put him down.
I don't think she's here to put him down.
I think she's gonna take him back, and so, liar or not, he's still right.
She's gonna take the fall for everything that he's done.
Now, does that seem right to you? No.
It does not.
But we've been doing this long enough, Adam, to know that right doesn't always win.
Dalton, are you on the line? Yeah, go for Dalton.
Hey, we've got a major situation here.
I need to make sure the Deputy Director is up to speed.
Someone has hacked another one of our subs.
Well, we heard that.
South China Sea.
Right, well, unlike the first time, this sub didn't go dark.
It's just been given a course and a speed.
The crew has been completely locked out of the nav system.
We're working to try and help get control of the vessel back, but A'ight, but what? It's headed straight for Fiery Cross Reef.
That's China.
Yeah, that's one of their man-made islands.
Okay, so someone's trying to provoke an incident between us and the Chinese.
Could be, or there's another possibility.
The Chinese themselves are behind it.
They act all shocked at this provocation, but then when the sub hits their waters They snatch it up like the catch of the day.
So $2 billion worth of top-secret technology, including 24 Trident missiles carrying 12 nukes each ends up serendipitously in their hands.
Yeah, and we end up looking like the bad guys.
Exactly.
Look, we're trying to solve the problem on our end, but it's looking like less than three hours before the "Wyoming" is in Chinese waters.
Understood.
You guys stay here.
China.
He's working for China.
Maybe not directly, but right now, he's got his goons making Verina steer the "Wyoming" straight towards Fiery Cross Reef.
Superpowers.
They play their games.
What does or doesn't happen Oh, she already tried that option, sport.
Yeah, she's not me, sport.
I see you've been listening.
That's good, 'cause you're gonna have to do it, you know.
- Sooner or later - Please.
He's my problem.
Me dead or me free.
It's the only way to save your friend here.
Don't do this.
[SIGHS.]
All right.
I'll help you as much as I can.
But I'm not doing it for you, ace.
I'm doing it for her.
She and I pull this one out and, who knows, maybe we'll get two of the nicer cells at supermax.
I'll need my phone.
No, you'll use one of ours.
It's a master protocol.
Has to come from my phone.
Even if it's my voice, they'll disregard it and assume I've been compromised, and then I really will be unable to help you.
It's the flip phone, analog.
It's harder to track and bug.
We're back at it, working together again.
Tell me there's not some part of you that's happy I'm still alive.
Not even a molecule.
Well, are you cutting my hands free, or am I telling you what to dial? I'm just waiting on you.
The unlock code is 11-27-08.
That's the day she had me killed.
Oh, she didn't tell you that.
Oh.
Well, I guess we all have our secrets.
The number you want to dial is 0-2-0-7- 4-6-9-5-7-6-3.
[CELL PHONE DIALING.]
[LINE RINGING.]
This is Millicent.
Thank you so much for reading my profile.
If you would, please leave your name and your Love Connection ID.
It's a UK dating service.
I would never risk talking to my people directly.
And if I'm interested, I will call you back.
[WHISPERING.]
I need to leave a message.
[BEEP.]
Hi, Millicent.
This is David, ID 44.
I'm interested in meeting for a drink.
Say, 5:00 p.
m.
, Eyvan Kebap Bar? There.
You happy? You should tell me about this guy.
Start with a description.
That's gonna be a problem.
Why's that? 'Cause I never met him before in my life.
[PHONE RINGS.]
Yes, sir.
Captain Halsey.
"USS Wyoming" on the line.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Captain Halsey, this is Noah Morgenthau, acting deputy director of the DIA.
How are you holding up, sir? Well, you ever have a dream where you show up to work naked? - Once or twice.
- Well, any captain will tell you, when it comes to worst nightmares, not having control of your own boat is at the top of the list.
They tell me that you are the man who's gonna help me wake up from this terrible dream.
We're working on it, sir.
Besides having all the best minds working on a technical solution, we also have a team on the ground trying to eliminate the problem at the source.
Ah, much obliged.
Is it safe to assume you have our present course and speed up on some board somewhere? - Right in front of us.
- Good.
I'm gonna tell you what I told the Joint Chiefs.
In roughly 88 minutes, we are scheduled to enter Chinese territorial waters.
I say "scheduled" because that is never gonna happen.
I may not have control of my boat, Mr.
Morgenthau, but I do have the ability to scuttle it, and that's exactly what I intend to do.
I will sink this vessel before I let it fall into the wrong hands.
I don't say this to put undue pressure on you.
If anything, I say it so that you know that you don't have to worry that this boat is gonna fall into the hands of the People's Republic of China.
Understood, Captain.
But respectfully, anything less than the safe return of your crew is unacceptable as far as we're concerned.
We'll be in touch with a solution once we have it.
Look forward to that call.
Hannah, what's the size of the "Wyoming's" crew? [DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Half of cyber command is working on a fix.
The problem is the hack itself triggered the sub's cyber defenses, which means we have to figure out a workaround and then walk the crew through it.
How's it going over there? Well, Dalton's gonna try and tag one of the guys that took Verina.
Hopefully, that will lead us to where Hoffman is keeping her.
They're discussing options on how to get a tracker on him now.
I'm confident, because he is, but I'm not sure we have the time.
Patricia, in regards to this other situation, I'm not asking questions, and you don't need to give me answers.
I just I want you to know if there's anything I can do, officially or unofficially, you just say the word.
Thank you, Hannah.
[SYNTH MUSIC.]
Calls himself Victor.
That should tell you all you need to know about his ego.
He's British, ex-SAS, and he has a weakness for young women and old Scotch.
All right, and how were you gonna pick this guy out of a bar? Saw a picture of him once.
He's Caucasian, maybe six feet tall, - short dark hair.
- Terrific.
That narrows it down to a few million people.
- All right, what else? - There's nothing else.
Anonymity is good tradecraft.
Let me guess.
We need to take you with us so that you can help us identify this Victor guy.
I'm happy to help the cause.
[CHUCKLES.]
Yeah.
Not a chance.
All right, so we don't have a photo of this guy, so we're gonna have to draw him to us.
We don't have old Scotch.
That's a shame.
But we do have [LIGHT BRITISH ACCENT.]
How's your British accent? A honey trap? Seriously? Guys, assuming this Victor guy is sharp, he's not going to fall for a honey trap.
- It's not a - it's not a honey trap, per se.
He says he's got an ego.
Okay.
So let's let the guy be a hero.
[ROCK MUSIC.]
All right, Dalton, we're running facial recognition on everyone in the bar.
If we get a hit, I'll let you know.
What, in this place? Everyone's probably a criminal.
- Hey, you're - you're English, remember? Mm-hmm.
[COCKNEY ACCENT.]
Oy! Mate! 'Ello? Yeah? Can I get a pint, please? [OMINOUS MUSIC.]
You pace this much when I was on an op? Huh? Yeah.
It's the worst part of the job, especially when you care about the person on the other end of the line.
Yeah, you always care.
You know what I mean.
Sure, you're gonna be sweet to me now, 'cause you need my help to get what you want.
I'm damned if I hate you.
I'm damned if I cared about you.
Welcome to my last ten years.
At least you thought I was dead.
I knew you were alive.
Mm.
Listen, you're not really gonna take me back, are you? That's worse than killing me, doubly so because you're going to rot with me.
What if I became an asset? Think about it.
All the people I know.
All the connections.
Alex We run it like before, only since I'm an outlaw, we could do twice as much, P.
Mm-hmm.
It's brilliant.
I know very little in this world, less it seems every day, but there is one thing I know.
You are too dangerous to be free.
[sighs.]
All right, it's 5:15.
Time to go be a douchebag.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
Oh Hey! What the hell are you doing? Huh? Get away from my girl, man.
What are you doing? You think you can - play me like this? - No one's playing you.
I told you I needed space, and this is not space.
- What do you need space for? - You.
- I need space from you.
- What do you need space for? Hanging out with these idiots? What are you wearing? Zip that up.
I will wear whatever I want to wear.
No, you won't.
- Hey, hey, come here.
- Ow! Ow! - D-don't! Ow! - Hey.
- What? - Ow! - What? - Stop it! Any one of those three could be Victor.
Let's see which one can handle himself.
What? Huh? It's got nothing to do with you.
You want something? Huh? No, I didn't think so.
Let's go.
Whoa.
I thought chivalry was dead.
Uh! [BRITISH ACCENT.]
I'm afraid it does, mate.
You see, hitting a woman, that's what cowards do.
But you know what? Breaking cowards - That's what I do.
- All right, good.
I want you to see if he's trained.
Do not let him know that you are.
Come on, get up.
Unh! Ouch.
- Ooh.
- Clearly, that's him.
- That's our guy.
- Yeah.
All right, McGuire.
Great job, buddy.
Get out of there.
You want her? You can have her, man.
Cheers, mate.
[QUIETLY.]
I hope that was fun for you.
For the record, I could have kicked that guy's ass.
All right, put a Band-Aid on it, sugar.
Command, Victor's been ID'd.
Time to put the tracker on him.
[SOFT ROCK MUSIC.]
Thank you.
How's that wrist? It's all right.
No thanks to that loon I call an ex.
Yeah.
Thank you for all of that.
It's the least I could do.
Besides, I may not know you, but come on, you deserve a man that treats you with respect.
Is that so? LET ME GUESS: that man could be you? I was just bringing you some ice.
I'm sorry I was rude.
You was just trying to be nice.
That-a-girl.
RFID transmitter fibers on the paper are broadcasting well.
Nice work.
We'll be able to follow him without actually having to follow him.
Okay, we're executing the program.
Uh, I'm gonna have my XO translate what's going on in English, because, uh, my last computer was a Commodore 64.
Any chance we can restore visual? Signal's too weak now.
Initial boot commands have been accepted.
System is now pinging the command and control override.
It seems like we're regaining partial authority on rudder.
Wait, stand by.
Stand by.
[TENSE MUSIC.]
[ELECTRONIC BEEPING.]
No luck, Mr.
Morgenthau.
I thought we had it there for a second.
I feel like you're very close.
I'm encouraged.
Us as well.
We're gonna head back to the drawing board, finalize that last step.
[SIGHS.]
- We're almost there.
- We're nowhere.
I lied to him.
That worm took us nearly two hours to write.
Cyber command was sure it would work.
Dalton, we could use some good news about now.
- You got any? - Well, we found where Victor and his guys are keeping Verina.
Of course, she's locked up in a junkyard fortress.
But you don't see antennae like that in many junkyards.
IR sweeps and night vision-defeating strobes.
Got a Vanguard 2K camera systems, probably thermal.
Cut the power? [SYNTH MUSIC.]
All right, so the generator's right here in the back of the yard.
It's shielded.
We could use the Barrett to take it out, but then there goes surprise.
Right now, surprise is pretty much all we got, and time is not on our side.
Assuming that they're keeping her here, I still think the best approach is for Jaz and Top to land here.
Amir and I will come around on the flank here, set up good overlapping fields of fire.
What's the updated intel on the strength of their opposition? We only saw two perimeter guards, one at the main building and one at the gate.
You know, the numbers don't look bad.
No, the numbers won't be bad.
Victor doesn't want a lot of eyeballs on what he's doing, not to mention he doesn't even need it.
He's got every square inch of this place covered with multiple redundant systems.
Noah, Hannah, you've got to do something.
Look, even if we shut down the power grid, they still have those backup generators Dalton's talking about, and we can't risk a drone strike because we have no idea where Verina is inside that compound.
If she dies, so does the crew of the "Wyoming.
" [SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
[SIGHS.]
[SIGHS.]
This guy.
Why couldn't you have just killed him the first time around? Believe me, I tried.
You like what's happening? This all going according to plan? No.
I didn't plan on getting caught.
Oh.
I mean, I knew this job was in Captain Dalton's backyard, and I knew that meant I would be the closest to you, P.
, that I've been in years, but did I want to get caught? Well, maybe Freud would say yes.
You can end this all with one phone call.
I just might.
Oh, you mean Verina? No, I gave Victor very specific instructions.
There's nothing I can do to stop him.
You got me.
You want to be smarter than me? Play this as your team.
What would you do? I think I would use Victor's strength against him.
We've already gone over this.
We cannot cut the power and you cannot knock out the security system.
Who said anything about you doing anything? All right, Preach.
I'm tapping into their network right now.
[ELECTRONIC BEEPING.]
Copy you.
Initiating contact now.
[ELECTRONIC BEEP.]
She sees it.
That's it.
Contact initiated.
Sending security protocols.
All right, everybody remember, surprise is our advantage here.
I don't want to get into a firefight, especially not with a 16-year-old girl right in the middle of it.
Where's the "Wyoming"? Ten miles from Chinese waters, and it looks like they got a welcoming committee waiting to get their hands on her.
I'm looking forward to disappointing them.
See if you can get the captain online.
Okay, I'm getting a response from Verina.
All right, I'm gonna spare you the colorful language.
Suffice it to say that she's commencing the shutdown, but she's expecting swift and immediate justice for Victor and his friends.
Well, it's definitely not going to end in a heated debate, that's for sure.
All right, Amir, McG, move out.
Captain Halsey? I know where you are and what you're about to do, and I am asking you to please wait until the last possible second.
Well, respectfully, son, I really don't want to risk getting this wrong.
Then don't get it wrong.
But I am looking at a team that might be minutes away from getting us the answer that we want.
I'll give you all we've got, but even one second over is too late.
This boat flies one flag, and one flag only.
Understood.
Thank you, sir.
All right, team.
Get ready to go black in five, four three, two, one.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
Jimmy, check the backup generator.
Got it.
[MUFFLED GUNSHOT.]
What was that? Perimeter one, report.
I got him.
[MUFFLED GUNSHOT.]
Did you just take my shot? Oops.
Commencing breach.
Perimeter one, report.
Perimeter two.
Drew, what do you see? Anyone? Come in.
What the hell's going on out there? Perimeter two.
Jimmy's down! What? What? What the hell's going on here? Was this you? This was you, wasn't it? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Listen to me.
If this is an assault, then they're here for her, which means we keep her alive.
Otherwise, they'll blow the whole bloody compound.
Do you understand? - Yes.
- Then stand down.
All right, now you guys know this place.
They don't.
That means get to your murder holes.
Look for muzzle flashes.
They gotta cross some open ground to get here.
Make sure they don't.
Go! Go! ["MIGHT AS WELL GET JUICED" BY THE ROLLING STONES PLAYING.]
[MUFFLED GUNSHOT.]
Wolves are howling right at your door Vultures want to tear off some more Your flesh is burning right off of your bones [MINE BEEPING.]
Your children kick you out of your home [MUFFLED CRY.]
Might as well get juiced Jasper, what do you see out there? Jasper, report in.
Zach, you got eyes on Jasper? Zach? Zach? Boss, you're not gonna believe this.
[MUFFLED CRIES.]
Zach, Jasper, report in.
Guys, come on.
Report in.
Hello? I gonna give you Zach? Hey, Victor.
We got your security neutralized.
And I got Hoffman under wraps back at base.
Now, this only ends one of two ways: you alive or you dead.
You really want to go down for this? You got five seconds before we come in there.
[INHALES DEEPLY.]
Sorry, love.
[GUNSHOTS.]
No, no, no, no, no.
[DRAMATIC MUSIC.]
Don't shoot! I'm unarmed, I'm unarmed! I'm unarmed.
Don't shoot, don't shoot.
You got me.
- You got me.
You win.
- Clear! I've got the girl.
I have her.
- Are you okay? - Yeah.
Ah You.
You've got to be kidding me.
And me! Cheers, mate.
Feel better? Yeah.
All right, Command.
We got Verina.
She seems to be okay.
That is great news, Dalton, 'cause we are about five minutes away from losing the "Wyoming" and her crew.
Can Verina undo what she did? Uh Well, that's gonna be a lot harder than we thought.
All right, Command.
All this equipment's DOA.
Looks like Victor shot it up before we came through the door.
There's not much we can do on our end.
Sure, there is.
I I don't know who you're talking to, but is there someone with tech skills and a powerful machine I could talk to? Yeah.
Come on over here.
All right.
Sit.
All right, you're gonna talk on there.
Okay.
And you'll look right here.
Okay.
- Verina? - Hi.
- Who am I talking to? - Noah.
How good are you with advanced coding in Ada? Uh, not as good as you, but to be honest, we have a lot of computing power here, but we have tried every trick we can think of and we have no idea how to get this sub back online.
Sometimes, to build a better mousetrap, you just need the right kind of cheese.
Sounds good.
What does that mean? Uh, we're going to need to create a ToT botnet running Mirai 2.
0 embedded in the sub's PLC override package.
I-I can give you all the codes.
Even if we could create that package, the sub is at depth and offline.
It's a closed loop.
Uh, it's it's not quite closed.
Do you guys like TV and movies? - Yeah.
- And so do sailors on subs.
They've wired LAN for MWR.
MWR? Of course, morale, welfare, and recreation.
It's genius.
They pipe in content via ELF antenna.
Yeah, so instead of uploading a movie, we're gonna upload the override codes so the captain can take back control of his boat.
Okay, um, grab a pencil.
I'm gonna rattle off a lot of codes at you.
Okay, my XO tells me we've loaded the program.
Initial firewall has been cleared.
Waiting for command and control to signal it's accessible.
Stand by.
[SUSPENSEFUL MUSIC.]
It's turning.
The sub is turning! Captain Halsey? - [CHEERING.]
- Apologies, Mr.
Morgenthau.
I wanted to wait until you had a chance of hearing me.
Suffice to say, whatever you did worked.
I'm now back in command of the "USS Wyoming.
" That is great news, Captain! You did it.
[LAUGHS.]
You did it.
Well, we did it.
Actually, you know, Verina did it.
Yeah, but you you gave everybody hope.
Yeah.
[TRANQUIL MUSIC.]
Great job, guys.
So it's over? That's it.
It's over.
Come on.
All right, Command, we are RTB with one prisoner, one very brave young lady.
My kind of girl.
Looking forward to meeting her.
Thank you, Alex.
I wasn't gonna get to spend the money anyway.
Well, thanks.
If you really wanted to thank me, you'd apologize for betraying me like you did.
Alex You really can't do it, can you? You really can't admit you were wrong.
I was wrong.
I should've warned you.
Try to be the least bit believable.
Oh, I'll lie if you want me to.
Whatever you want me to say, whatever you need.
[SIGHS.]
Don't care what you say.
I care what you think.
TWO WORDS: "Run, Alex.
" You'd have said that, it would've been fine.
I wouldn't be mad that you didn't try to protect me.
No one can protect you from yourself.
Instead, you let me die.
Better, you killed me.
You murdered me.
And now you think you're going to do it again.
I don't think so, P.
I died last time.
This time, it's your turn.
[MUFFLED SOUND.]
I spoke to the Chief of Staff at the hospital.
The Deputy Director is alive.
She's unconscious, but she's stable.
She's gonna be okay.
[HEART MONITOR BEEPING.]
And Preach? Chief Petty Officer Carter received the bulk of the hit.
His lungs were affected in the blast Noah, Noah.
It's me.
He's in a coma, Hannah.
[TRANQUIL MUSIC.]
God, I hate hospitals.
The smells, all the machines Has anyone contacted his wife? I was waiting for Top to do it.
Ah, I think you should just go ahead.
He's gonna be a while.
- Hey.
- [COUGHS.]
Ma'am.
[SIGHS.]
What happened? It's the old flip phone, analog.
It's much harder to track and bug.
The phone.
The unlock code is 11-27-08.
It was an impact bomb.
Dalton didn't press an unlock code.
He pressed an arming code.
How's Preach? Not so good.
Wha Who's with him? Dalton with him? No.
Honestly, I don't know where he is.
He yanked his comms, left his phones.
We haven't heard from him in hours.
He went dark.
Think you're probably looking for this.
Do you have any idea how much that laptop's worth? I knew you did.
May I? You know, I guess this means you're better than me.
Nah, just that I'll live longer.
Yeah? I suppose this is how it ends for guys like us.
Not with some 21-gun salute and a field full of weeping loved ones.
Yeah, just in a dark room with another quiet professional.
[MELANCHOLY MUSIC.]
You know, I grew up in California.
You? Pennsylvania.
I wanted to be an astronaut.
Firefighter.
Only child? No, that's right, you had three younger sisters.
One of them died when you were 16, thanks to your dad, a drunk.
You think that's what makes men like us? Pain like that? I think it definitely fuels the fire But I believe we are who we are.
- Nature over nurture.
- Mm-hmm.
I'm inclined to agree.
You know, it's funny.
I'm looking around the room memorizing all the details.
But you don't have memories when you're dead.
You know, maybe Hell is the perfect memory of everything that we've ever done.
You better hope not, for both of our sakes.

Preach didn't have his sidearm on him when he was brought in.
What are you talking about? - When Preach was brought in - I just checked with admitting he did not have his sidearm on him.
Did you see it? So? You're not gonna take me in, are you? There's this quote that I love.
It says that, uh, "people sleep peacefully "in their beds at night "only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.
" That what this is? Violence on their behalf? Nice try, Adam.
Nice spin.
You know what you can call this.

It's just murder.
Basic murder.

[SOMBER MUSIC.]

So quiet.
You know he'd have something to say right now, right? He'd be like, "McGuire, baby, you know it's always darkest before the dawn.
" No, he wouldn't.
It makes way too much sense.
It'd have to be, uh be a little more cryptic.
You know, like, uh, "the sun and the moon are twins.
" "Trials are the precursors to triumphs.
" "The river of life runs through rapids we call adversity.
" Man, where does he even come up with this stuff? Certainly not from books.
Nope, he's tapped into something else entirely.
["NO EXPECTATIONS" PLAYING.]
