The Chicago Code s01e02 Episode Script

Hog Butcher

Ten-one, ten-one, officer shot.
Officer shot.
En route to Illinois Masonic.
As a detective, I pulled 12-year-old Antonio Betz off the street and made sure he got an education.
As a captain, with his mother's blessing, I handed 19-year-old Antonio Betz an application to be a Chicago police officer.
When I became Superintendent of Police.
I asked 24-year-old Antonia Betz to be my driver and bodyguard.
Tonight, 25-year-old Antonio Betz put himself in front of two bullets to save my life.
I didn't just lose an officer and a driver tonight, I lost a confidante and a friend.
I am so sorry.
He loved working for you so much.
He was an incredible man.
Who the hell did this to my baby? I don't know, but I promise you I will not let a single officer rest until I found out.
Superintendent.
I'm sorry, but, uh Excuse me.
Deceased officer's name was Antonio Betz.
His mother is a single parent; Her name is Gloria.
And you got 45 minutes before you have to be back at City Hall for that vote.
Morning.
Sorry for the department's loss.
Teresa, you must've been especially close to Antonio.
I was.
Any leads on the investigation? It's just the beginning.
Yeah, but don't worry, Alderman, we will find everyone that did this, and when we do, we will make them all pay.
As well you should.
Meantime, I'd like to go pay my condolences to Gloria.
Excuse me.
"You got any leads?" digging around into his dirty dealings with the Irish mob, so he tried to kill you last night, and now he's got the stones to hand flowers to Antonio's mother.
I mean, come on, give me one reason why I shouldn't go back and drag him by his $2,000 suit straight into an interrogation room.
Just take it easy.
We cannot take on Gibbons directly.
It doesn't work.
Find the shooter, and then we work our way up the ladder.
And when we do, I get to throw him in the well.
Mrs.
Betz, you need anything at all day, night, 24/7 I will be here, and I will make sure you get it.
Thank you, Alderman Gibbons.
You're a blessing.
No, no.
Your son, Antonio, was a blessing.
He died in service of this city.
He gave up his vest.
He saved Superintendent Colvin's life.
What? Yeah.
He gave up his vest? Your Antonio is a hero.
Don't you ever forget that.
You know, a police officer is dead.
So your lives just got put in a vice.
This city is in lockdown.
One strike and you're out.
So you spit on the sidewalk, you roll a joint, you got a hair out of place, I don't care, you are spending the night in lockup.
The sooner you help us solve this, the sooner hell goes away.
Till then, welcome to zero tolerance.
Screw you.
Huh? Where do you think you're going, jaghole? Don't you even dare.
Swear to God, she never saw it coming.
Neither did he it was, like boom, boom! Game over! It's hilarious, man.
Thanks.
More than enough to show intent to distribute, gentlemen.
You know, the only way any of you jagholes are not spending next week in County is by playing ball on last night's cop killer, huh? Hey, who is it gonna be? Who's gonna step up and play Wysocki.
It's Liam Hennesey.
I'm at McGowan's.
There's a guy down here bragging about something pulled last night, about some woman who "never saw it coming.
" You're calling me direct? No, no, no.
You call the safe number, and they call me you trying to blow your cover? Look, this guy is getting ready to ditch, and he could be the shooter.
He works with Will Gainey, one of Alderman Gibbons' guys.
Gibbons is your prime suspect, right? Yeah.
Well, I figured helping catch the guy that shot the superintendent and killed Betz is worth risking my cover.
No, you're right, okay? I'm just telling you to be safe around these people.
Look, I'm gonna roll out of here.
No, no, stay put, okay? I'm coming over there.
If you split and we show up, how's it gonna look? Take your knocks like everyone else.
Detective Jarek Wysocki.
You hear so many stories, you don't know which ones to believe.
My favorite is how he held off an angry mob with a hunk of pine.
Not just any pine a Carlton Fisk.
Chicago White Sox Big Stick bat.
Crowd heard it was a local rapist, were ready to lynch him DNA later cleared the guy.
Other coppers say he's the best, and that's who I want to learn from.
He doesn't like partners.
Hardly anyone lasts more than six months with him, but if you do, the man is a living, breathing, fast pass to the top.
Have you figured it out yet? 'Cause we gotta roll.
Yeah.
All right, superintendent's car was parked on the south side of the street here facing west; We had three shots fired here.
Superintendent returned from Antonio Betz's weapon, four rounds from his nine-millimeter and I have casings from both weapons and then the shooter stepped back into the vehicle; The driver drove west on Potomac.
Well, it's oddly beautiful.
What else? Oh, uh, superintendent hit the suspect's vehicle, and we end up with some broken pieces of plastic, probably from a tail light.
All right, fellas, we're done over here.
Superintendent said the shooter was a white male, 25 to 35.
She didn't get a good look at the driver.
So, what else can you tell me about the shooter? We know um Was he standing, was he kneeling? Was he right- or left-handed? What kind of shoes was he wearing? Does he drink whiskey or beer? Is he fan of the great game of baseball, or is he a Cubby lover? Cubs fans are loyal.
You gotta respect that.
The shooter, kid.
I know he's a good shot.
Good? Yeah.
Three shots, 30 feet in near darkness, all center body mass our boy's not good, he's got skills.
Maybe even a marksman.
He only drinks beer.
Get eyes on the shooter's car, kid.
Keep opening the doors.
What doors? The ones between your ears.
I should've put that in my front pocket.
Hey, you move again, you eat some floor, okay? Detective.
Collum Brady.
The man's spreading the love around.
Picked up the last three rounds for the house.
All right, fix that shirt it's not regulation.
Ron.
Seriously? Mr.
Brady.
Let's you and I have a little talk.
Come on, step out the back.
Hey! You got a problem? You're buying rounds, you don't invite us? Huh? What are you celebrating, besides still being ugly? Who said I was celebrating? Well, what were you doing last night? I went on a date if you can call it that.
What was his name? Liz something.
What time'd you leave? Got there around 9:00.
I left around 11:45, I guess.
11:45, yeah? Aw, come on, this chick's legit, man.
Gold Coast blonde.
I buy her the house, then I get zippo.
Oh, no happy ending? I'm shocked.
Then what? Then I came here, and some guys start breaking my china about the date.
So I give them a story.
Why, somebody tell you different? Brady's clear.
Cut him loose.
Whoa, at least let me bring him in and sweat him.
He doesn't know anything; He's not involved.
The guy's Irish mob.
And not a soldier, management.
And he's buying the house drinks? They should be buying him drinks.
Something went down last night.
Look, I'm not wasting any more time with this guy, not while the real shooters are still out there.
Okay, maybe he's not the real shooter, but guys like this know everything on the street let me work on him.
He'll give up a real name.
Deafness run in your family? All right, everyone with a weapon gets a ride in the back of the van.
Anyone else, cut 'em loose.
Hey, I got this guy; I know him.
Hey, come here.
You know, Brady is probably dirty, but I just had to let him walk to protect your cover, okay? You don't call the cavalry next time, unless you're absolutely certain.
Maybe I jumped a little fast, but cop killed, superintendent shot I get it, I get it, I get it the big picture.
Remember what you're here to do tie the Irish mob to the political bosses, Gibbons in particular.
You don't get any prizes for getting yourself dead.
Okay, get up in there.
Go.
That goes with him.
Heads up.
I got a tweet on the shooter's car.
What do you mean, you used Twitter? Yeah, I put an all-point on the Police Neighborhood Watch account.
Someone in Austin called it in, wants to show us where.
All right, well, get confirmation and set a meet, Mr.
I am making a statement, and then I'm getting out.
No questions.
That's not gonna be good enough.
I don't want to be in my whites standing in front of cameras all day, when I need to be out on the street helping find the people who did this.
You've got 10,000 officers and detectives doing that right now.
What you need to do is let the people of this city know that you're leading them.
Imagine the confidence it'll instill to actually have someone in custody.
You're one of the youngest superintendents ever in Chicago, the first female one, controversial, to say the least.
There are a lot of unhappy coppers that would love to see you fail.
Just do this.
Okay.
I'll put it out to the department.
No one speak to the press but me.
Hey, uh, listen, I've been meaning to say, I know your brother died and I know he was killed in the line of duty Is this for your Twitter feed? I'll keep it under 140 characters for you.
I'm just saying Let it go.
If this case is bringing anything up for you, then, uh, we'll go grab a beer or something, all right? You the tweeter? Follow me.
All right, kid, where we going? Where's the car? Where's the money? What money? Where's the car? Don't play dumb the reward.
What, you offered him a reward? Yeah.
Well, go on, pay the man.
First, how'd you find it? You got the money, or what? Yeah.
Show us the ride first.
The 500 bucks first.
Oh! I got to do paperwork for that kind of money, okay? No cash, no clue, prep school.
All right, look, you're messing with a pretty serious investigation here, wise ass, all right? Hey, lose the language, Picasso.
Little man's negotiating.
How much you got? Hundred bucks.
Well, hand it over.
It's cool, we're cool, we're cool.
What are we doing back here? Checking up on Brady.
You heard Jarek the guy's a dead end.
Yeah, I heard him, but he's not hearing me.
Or maybe he's got a problem with me or something.
He's your uncle, not a boss.
Hey, there's a guy out there who killed a cop, and that's what we should be working on.
Vonda you don't think I know what all this is doing to you? Your father died doing this job.
The best way to honor him is being good police.
I pulled Brady's sheet.
He sat down two years for armed robbery.
Guy like that'll do anything not to go back inside.
We put a little heat on him maybe we get the name that everyone in this city is looking for.
Speak of the devil.
Let's rattle this guy's cage.
This is it? A black Impala.
We got a busted rear tail light.
Looks like you hit the lottery, kid.
All right, there you go get home safe, and keep this to yourself, or you won't see the rest of the cash.
Go on! Get outta here! Uh, bullet through the front seat.
We got blood in the shoulder area of the driver's side.
Looks like the shooter got away unscathed, though.
I'll call for Crime Lab, see if we can super-glue it, pull some DNA from the blood.
DNA fast-tracked takes how long? 48 hours.
So what do you suggest we do until then, go fishing? What is this, this one of those opening-doors moments? Yeah.
There's blood.
You know that, I know that, and I'm pretty sure the guy that got shot knows it, too.
There's probably prints.
Bad guys don't like to leave evidence; They like to get rid of it.
So they're gonna come back for the car? They might, if we give 'em a nudge.
How are we gonna do that? Gotta make 'em feel safe.
Uh, we have a description of the vehicle used in the shooting of Superintendent Colvin and Officer Antonio Betz.
I thought there was a department-wide media blackout.
Mm.
Even her friends aren't following her orders.
What is the description of the car the department is looking for? We're looking for a yellow 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass with a possible broken right tail light.
We believe the driver of the vehicle may have been shot and left blood evidence in the car.
Once we have located the vehicle, we will have a positive I.
D.
In a matter of hours.
You know, lunch ain't happening again till tomorrow, so eat up.
Food of your people, right? Poles broke their backs building this city.
There's a lot of history in that sausage.
I can taste it.
Hang on, here's something.
The blonde girl.
Here we go.
Come on Pull out, pull out.
No parking here, miss.
I was just moving it.
Take your hands out of the purse, please.
Thank you.
What are you doing here? Hey, wha-wha-what? What are you doing here? I was just picking up my car.
Your car I don't think so.
Your car? Huh? Your car was used in a shooting, did you know that? Oh, my God.
Oh, this is this is not happening.
This is happening.
I'm sure there's an explanation for this.
Let's just relax.
We're gonna ask you a couple of questions.
Who sent you to get the car? My boyfriend didn't do anything.
Your boyfriend didn't do anything? Step out of the car.
Are you kidding me? Turn around, put your hands turn around, I didn't roll that stop sign! Put your hands on the car.
Spread your legs.
Got any sharp objects? No.
You wouldn't lie to me, would you? No.
Don't worry, Brady, we'll stop harassing you soon as we find something.
I think we just did.
Those are prescription.
What, you want to call my doctor? Your doctor dispenses in a zip lock? Take a few samples for the lab.
You know what, we're gonna let you go with a warning this time, on the stop sign.
At least until we process these.
He gave up his vest to Teresa Colvin, and they're gonna punish him for that? Getting police officers to wear their vests always was an uphill battle, Mrs.
Betz.
When Teresa Colvin took office, she asked for legislation to help change that.
It was about safety.
Saving police officers' lives.
Now, I am sure Teresa Colvin never dreamed something like this would ever happen.
Alderman, I don't see a way around it.
Not immediately, anyway.
I need you to look twice.
Every "I" and every "T," understand? Mm.
Police! I got him, I got him, I got him.
Police! Clear! How you feeling, Danny? Clear! I got a gunshot wound below the shoulder blade.
No exit wound the slug is still in him.
He's got a weak pulse and lost a lot of blood.
Squad, we need an ambulance at 725 Olcutt for a bona fide GSW victim.
Danny, talk to me.
Where are we? We're at home.
Okay, we got an ambulance on the way.
Okay, now, listen to me, Danny.
I know you were the driver, okay? But I need the name of the shooter.
I'm cold.
He's not waiting on an ambulance.
Get a blanket.
Get something, anything we can wrap him up in.
We're gonna carry him out of here.
Danny Danny, you're not looking so good, okay? But the law allows you to make a dying declaration.
Come on.
Tell me who shot the two cops.
Give me the name, the name of the guy who shot the cops.
Officer Betz give me the name of the guy.
Give me the name.
Make it good.
He's gone.
Call off the bus.
Okay, driver's name is Danny Belick.
Caleb's in there right now with the girlfriend.
If we can connect this guy to the mob and tie it to Gibbons Not bad, huh? What, you want a compliment for your ingenuity? Well, come on, you got to admit, it's not bad leaking to the press that we're looking for a completely different car to the real one, Belick feels safe enough to send the girlfriend out to pick it up.
Yeah, normally, that would be very good police work.
But? Except you managed to undermine my authority to every cop in this department by directly disobeying an order on the local news! Yeah, well, I didn't think it applied to me.
Oh, really? Why, because you're so special? You can disobey an order? Yeah, because that's exactly how you made it sound.
Special privileges, take on any investigation in the city I never said you could disobey an order.
You're the one that dragged me into this "let's take down Alderman Gibbons" thing in the first place, so if I need to take a shortcut, I'll take a shortcut.
You know what? We just need to set some ground rules.
How can there be ground rules? We're taking on City Hall like no one else has ever done.
You know, if this is gonna be successful, somewhere down the track, you're gonna need deniability.
You know what? I'm also gonna need accountability.
Because I am not gonna let us become the monsters we are chasing.
You're gonna love me, you're gonna hate me, you're gonna need me what matters is, do you trust me to do what is right by you? I trust you in as far as you respect me.
I've got your back.
Go out there and get the name of the shooter.
- Is there anyone who had a reason for shooting the superintendent? - No, no.
I can't deal with this.
- Anything? - No.
Look, I know you're upset, I know you wanna help us, and cooperate.
Yeah, ok Yeah, I get it, I get it, you're greaving but your boyfriend was involved in the killing of a police officer.
- He didn't do this - Well, maybe you're involved too No, no, no - Maybe that's why she won't cooperate.
- No! Come on! Our evidence indicates that Danny was just the driver, he was not the shooter.
- Okay! - So help us find the real bad guy.
It doesn't make any sense.
It doesn't make any sense! No, he wouldn't kill a cop! Why! He wanted He what? He what?! He Why? He wanted to be a cop! Look, his dad was a cop, all his friends were cops.
It's all he ever talked about.
Who were his cop friends? Did you, uh did you have a run-in with a Sergeant Don Worthen yesterday? I met with him.
All right, well, the story I hear is that you kicked him off the streets and promoted him to Commander of Mops and Brooms.
Come on, we've been through this.
You know the union makes it nearly impossible to remove substandard cops you know that.
So you did you humiliated him in front of the whole station floor and gave him a bogus promotion to what, set an example to the rest of the force? Worthen was the one who lost his temper, not me.
Was he angry enough to want to kill you? Because it turns out Don Worthen is tight with our dead driver.
Which makes him a suspect as our shooter.
What? Yeah.
Wait a minute, we agreed that it was Gibbons who was behind this.
Are you trying to tell me that it's cops with a beef? It's generic oxy.
The manufacturer's Ioxyn.
Last night one of their trucks was hit $300,000 retail.
Yeah, what do you need from me? A nod.
Some cover.
See, I had this guy, but Wysocki pulled me off, said it was a dead end.
Wysocki.
That's 'cause he didn't think of it first.
Look, I'm up to my ears in this shooting.
You want to poke around, consider yourself blessed.
But I can't spare any bodies.
Thank you, sir.
Hey, you dig anything up, you call me first.
Oh, absolutely.
Can I get you, uh, water, some coffee, pop? I got my teeth kicked in yesterday by that little bitch of a super you call friend.
So you can drop the niceties.
What are we doing here? I'm guessing what happened last night doesn't soften your feelings any.
I'm glad she's not dead.
And the driver, that's a damn tragedy, but more than that, she threw my career in the toilet.
Don, whatever you think about the superintendent and me, we were partners a long time ago.
She went her way, I went mine.
I'm not saying she's always wrong about everything, but she's not always right, either.
Come on, man, I know what kind of cop you are.
Doesn't matter what she says.
All right.
Good.
What can you tell us about Danny Belick? Danny? What about him? How well do you know him? I knew his dad.
He was a beat copper.
Dropped dead about ten years ago.
45 years old, threw a clot.
So, you and Danny are, uh I check in on him.
He wanted to be the police, like his old man, so I tried to help him along.
You gonna tell me what we're doing here? He "wanted to be," as in something what changed? The kid's had a rough go.
City budget's in the toilet.
We're not hiring the past three years, so he works every crap job he can.
Finally, CPD's hiring again, so he takes the academy exam, works his tail off, pulls a qualified score.
But Her Majesty the Queen decides only highly qualified's gonna make the cut this time.
Now, how do you tell someone they're qualified and unqualified at the same time? Tell me that.
Must have been very disappointing.
I made the academy with a qualified score.
I'm betting you did, too.
So there's not a lot of love lost between Danny and the super.
And then there's your beef with her on top of that.
Are we talking about Danny, or are we talking about me? When was the last time you saw Danny? I think somebody better tell me what the hell we're talking about.
Apparently, Superintendent Colvin returned fire at the shooter's car as it fled the scene.
We know that Danny was the driver.
Someone else pulled the trigger.
Your name "someone else"? I think Colvin's poison I'm not denying that but I'm the police.
I'm not gonna go putting extra holes in someone for no good reason, and definitely not other cops! Okay.
Okay, so what, then, you invite Danny back to the club for a few drinks? More than a few.
You're pissed.
You're spouting a lot of talk, you're blowing off a lot of steam, and then, what, these jagholes decide to go do something about it? Hold on I never told anyone to do anything.
That's not what I'm saying, Don.
Yeah, but that's how this goes down.
Suddenly, I'm accessory two, incitement to violence, pension gone! No way.
I'm done here.
Look, you help us, you help yourself.
We need a shooter.
Danny brought a friend along, a wannabe cop, like him.
What was his name? No.
I want a lawyer and my union rep.
No, Don! This is about nailing a cop killer.
You think Teresa Colvin's not gonna crucify me when this settles down?! I'll talk when I've got counsel! Get out! A police officer is dead, and you dare stand there covering your fat ass! Superintendent Antonio Betz was a better man on his worst day.
It's a disgrace you even wear the same star! My lawyer and my rep.
No! You are gonna tell me what I want to know right now! My lawyer Teresa! And my rep! He's a lazy piece of crap, and I will not tolerate it.
Yeah, and he's got a lot of friends in the department who think exactly like him.
Oh, and that makes it all right.
You know, if you want to take on the machine, the Ronin Gibbons of the world, the graft, the corruption, the mobbed-up cops, the crooked building inspectors, I told you, I'm with you 100%.
Okay, but there is corruption, and then there is just the way things get done, and you need to know the difference.
I know this city deserves better.
Yeah, well, I know if you want to clean up Chicago, the police force is the best tool you got, and you're halfway to losing them.
The guy is sitting in there trying to leverage the identity of a murderer.
No, he's not! He is not! He is not! He's in there fighting for his life.
Okay? I mean, what do you think happens to a guy like Worthen, retired, with no pension, after a lifetime of service? Is that a picture you want hanging on your wall? Don Worthen is not the problem not the real one so let me just go back in there and put this to bed.
Okay? No.
No.
I'll do it myself.
Ten years ago, you had one of the highest homicide clearance records in the city, and last year you closed only one in ten cases what happened? Screw you, is what happened.
There's nothing in your record; There's no traumatic event what changed? Look, you tell me what happened to you, and your job is safe.
I will guarantee your full pension.
Look, I've only been on this job six months, and I know that I have not gotten everything exactly right, and you may not believe me, but I do want things to be better, for everybody.
But I need your help, Don.
It's not one thing.
Dead bodies, kids At first it's a few drinks to get to sleep, and before you know it, it's 12 shots just to get what happened on your shift out of your head.
I never thought those stupid sons of bitches would do anything like this, you've gotta believe that.
I'm sorry if they did this because of something I said.
If who did, Don? Guess we were wrong about Gibbons.
Yeah, yeah, don't worry about that, we'll get him dirty on something soon.
It'd be a lot easier to stomach if it was him.
My own people.
Teresa, these aren't our people.
Name, address.
Go.
Bra Brady, what are you doing? I got some cop all over my ass.
And with this shooting, they're busting guys everywhere for nothing.
Now, I want this stuff out of the city till things cool down.
What the hell, man? Are you kidding? Oh, you want to get busted with 300 G's of pills in your trunk? No one's gonna look in this stuff.
All right, let's go.
Help me pack it up.
Hey, hey, gentlemen.
Yeah.
Hello, boys.
We have black straight for you tough guys.
Yeah, great kid you got the order right.
Hey, there's the car you're looking for what's up? Let's find out.
Street's all clear.
Watch my back.
Where's the other one? Hey! We got cops.
Get these off the hooks! Call for backup! Kevin, go car-to-car.
Come on! Let's go! Squad, we have a white van traveling at a high rate of speed, southbound on Ethel.
Hands! Hands! Put your hands Down! Down! Leme see your hands! Put your hands up! Get your hands off the wheel! Put your hands up, Brady! On the ground.
Get on the ground! Now! On the ground.
Get on the ground.
Since I was small, policing was all I ever wanted to do.
Now, there's three kinds of people who become cops: There's legacies, ex-military, and guys like me kids who had to swallow crap on a daily basis and never much got a taste for it.
Where I'm from, when the police rolled up, people spit on the ground, mumbled curses under their breath, but to me they were power and order, everything I wanted.
See, when people ask me how I escaped gang life, I always tell them the same thing: I didn't; I joined the toughest gang in town.
What's up? You ready? Joiner.
Heard you saw some action out there today.
It was all right.
I like the initiative.
You ever thought about riding with Organized Crime? I've definitely thought about it, yeah.
Invitation only, though, right? Mm-hmm.
Consider yourself invited.
Oh Ernie, hey, uh, look, Ernie, one thing.
You take me, you got to take my partner.
She's real police.
Package deal.
All right.
I'll see if I can make it happen.
Mm-hmm.
Vest up.
You're driving me today, Dunbar.
Superintendent Colvin.
Can I have a minute, please? Not this minute.
It's important.
Please? Wallace Lippman, City Budget Office.
It appears Officer Antonio Betz was not wearing his vest at the time of his shooting is that correct? That is correct he gave me his vest, and it saved my life.
That puts him in violation of CPD policy, as I believe you know.
That's what you're wasting my time with? As such, his beneficiaries are not eligible to receive death benefits from the city.
His family will get nothing.
This is an exceptional situation and his family will receive full benefits.
Not from my office.
I don't have the authority to make exceptions.
I can't approve the payment, and frankly, neither can you.
Who can authorize the payment? It would take a special exemption from the Police Oversight Committee.
You'll have to work something out with Alderman Gibbons and his committee.
Chicago Police! Get down, ma'am! Get down! Guys, that way.
Clear! He's not here.
Mrs.
Lynch, I'm sorry to put you through this, but it's very important that we find your grandson.
Is he in trouble? Not necessarily, but it would clear things up if we could find where he is.
Can you tell me where he is? A-A friend of his from the department called.
He asked Kyle to meet him.
Was it a Sergeant Worthen? Yes, that was his name.
Hey, Sarge, you got this.
Got it.
Let's go.
No, put it away you're not gonna need it.
That's the suspect's car what about backup? Not here.
This place is private.
What place? Where are we? It's a cop club.
Members only.
You? Yeah.
Don? Don, it's Jarek I'm coming in.
Don, what's going on? Don, talk to me.
My weapon's on the stool there.
You're gonna want the casings.
I think one rolled under the jukebox.
What happened, man? Did he come at you, or what? I'm the police and a copper's dead because of my big mouth.
How am I supposed to live with that? I clean up my messes.
Come on, Don.
The Muskie Club, huh? Yeah, we keep it small.
No more than 80 members.
Mostly cops and fire, couple of city workers.
Membership's by nomination only.
So it's an honor? Yeah, it is.
How long you been a member? Five or six years and no, I wasn't here last night, if that's what you're asking.
But you've heard the talk, about the superintendent.
Look, you know, I've heard a lot of talk.
What are you saying? Most of the guys in this club have got years on me, decades on you.
Some dinosaurs? Absolutely.
But good cops.
What do you want to do, make jawjackin' about the boss a crime? Go ahead, lock up half the force, myself included.
Each of us in this room has experienced loss.
In the midst of our loss, we are reminded of that for which we are grateful.
For me, personally, I have lost a dear friend and colleague.
For the city of Chicago, we have lost one of our finest.
We have lost a hero.
And so it is with a heavy heart but with a profound sense of gratitude for his service and sacrifice that I hereby commend star number 80308 in loving memory of Officer Antonio Roberto Betz to its eternal place of honor.
You okay? Yeah.
Just I saw Dad's star up there, and it I know, I know, I know.
Heard you had a nice bump.
Organized Crime congratulations.
Thank you.
Isaac made it happen.
You kept after Brady.
You know, when I tell you something, it's for a reason.
Sometimes there are things happening which you cannot know about, and I need to know that I can trust you on that.
You taught me the most important thing on this job is trusting your partner.
So if I'm in the middle of the situation, what am I supposed to do? Superintendent.
It should be your star on that wall, not my son's.
I am so sorry.
Why? Why did you take his vest? Why? They won't even pay out his benefits.
I am trying to correct that.
Well, I'm gonna make sure that you do.
Teresa Colvin you've been served.
You took my child away from me, and I let you, because I thought it was best for him.
And now he's gone, and he isn't ever coming back.
I understand that you are upset, but this is not the way to handle this, do you understand me? This is not the way to handle this.
I'm sorry.
Alderman.
Teresa.
Thank you, Steve.
I'm really sorry you had to go through that.
I need your help.
Then you got it.
Jarek Wysocki, you should be ashamed of yourself.
You're making me old.
Sister Paul.
Oh, that's not half of what I'm doing to myself.
How are you? Huh? I'm good.
Well, you're still what, you still smoking? You still drinking? You always do that to me.
Tenth grade history drove me crazy.
What's that? You answer a question with a question.
It's my take on the Socratic method.
It kept you little animals on your toes.
Sorry.
Uh, I am duty-bound to say this, so please forgive me.
We haven't seen you at Mass in some time.
Strayed from the path, Sister.
Well, that's why we go to church, for guidance back.
I'm divorced.
Mm.
But we're still sleeping together.
Got a 27-year-old fianc 16-year-old boy who I don't understand.
I finish my shift, and I go straight to where the beer flows that's my Monday through Saturday.
I'm not gonna waltz in here on Sunday and pretend I'm all holy.
I'm a lot of things, but I ain't gonna be no hypocrite.
Moral rigidity, Jarek always got you into trouble.
"If I can't be perfect, why bother being good?" Well, there you go again, another question.
So, why are you here? An officer was killed.
Mm.
I read about that.
Thought I'd light a candle for my brother.
Would you like for me to pray with you? No.
No, no, no, I'm-I'm No.
Thank you, though.
I appreciate it.
Pray with me.
No.
Yes.
No.
Yes.
N Here and now.
Our Holy Father please bless and protect the soul of my brother, Vincent Wysocki, and continue to comfort and bless his family, protect his daughter, my niece, Officer Vonda Wysocki.
Amen.
And grant me the wisdom and the perseverance and the ability to find my brother's killer.
And, Lord, when I find him, make my aim true that I may take his life.
Amen.
