You got this!
- Thank you. We got it.
- You got a good team this year.
[Cora] They're playing
well. Playing well.
[commentator 1] New
second baseman, Alex Cora.
Joey's younger little brother.
His first Major League at-bat.
Strike three called.
Cora is the perfect example
of a non-star player
taking his experience
as sort of a journeyman,
who bounced around to a number of
teams, wasn't always a starting player,
but absorbed a lot
in his playing career
and put that to great
use as a manager.
[commentator 2]
Ground ball to short.
[commentator 3] Hurried
and Cora throws it away.
[Casas] He knows what it's
like to be on the bench.
He knows what it's like
to be in a starting role,
so he's the kind of guy
that has perspective.
He was that guy that put his
teammates before himself.
- C'mon, kid. Love you. Keep going.
- [Duran] Love you too.
He's become like another
father figure to me.
[in Spanish] He's a
very good manager.
I feel comfortable with him,
especially because he's Latino.
He has given me the trust I need
so I'm able to demonstrate
what I can give to the team.
How does it go? "The Lord squeezes
you, but he doesn't strangle you."
- Just like that.
- But, fuck, don't squeeze so hard!
Damn!
[in English] There's so many
Spanish-speaking players across the game,
to be able to have your manager
that you can kind of just open up to
and speak in your own language,
that really does help.
[Peter] Alex finds a way
to relate to everybody,
to understand
their insecurities.
He understands what it is
to fail 60, 70% of the time.
That's the nature of baseball,
'cause you're always
in a losing percentage.
It's such a human game.
[Refsnyder] In every article I
read, it says AC's not coming back.
[player chuckles]
- Every article.
- [Andrew] It's been flooding my timeline.
- [player] No pressure.
- [Refsnyder] Enjoy…
Enjoy the last few months of
Alex Cora 'cause he's gone.
[all chuckling]
[Cora] I do believe,
at this level,
it's about managing
people here, right?
And if you don't connect
with them, it's hard.
So that's what I try to
do, just manage people.
He's young. He's bilingual.
The young bilingual skipper
has the Red Sox in great shape.
[Cora chuckles]
On the business side of it, I
gotta do a good job, you know?
Because, uh…
I'm in the last year of my contract,
and, um, all that stuff comes into play.
[player groans]
Ownership and upper management has
always been infatuated with Alex Cora.
I mean, they love him.
This guy got suspended for a
year by Major League Baseball
for his involvement in
a sign-stealing scandal
with the Houston Astros.
[reporter] Before
heading to Boston,
Cora served as bench coach
for the Houston Astros
during their 2017
World Series victory.
[commentator] The Houston
Astros are world champions.
[reporter] The League concluding
that during the championship season,
the Astros placed a camera
in the outfield stands
that could see the
catcher's signal
and would then relay that
information to the batter
by banging on this garbage can.
The commissioner's report identified
Cora as the potential mastermind.
[man 1] Official punishment has now
come down from Major League Baseball.
Alex Cora has been suspended
for all of the 2020 season.
[Cora in Spanish] It was something
that, in the moment, was addictive,
to be honest.
What we did was addictive.
It started one day,
and we just kept at it.
We never thought it
would come to this.
My suspension, you know what?
Well deserved.
What we did was wrong.
They took me out of the game.
It hurt me.
2020 was difficult, you know?
And I was at my lowest.
[Sean in English] In 2020, when
all of this stuff comes out,
and it becomes obvious that his hands
are dirty from this 2017 season,
they can't wait
to bring him back
when his suspension is up and
he's eligible to work for a team,
and they do.
[Sam] A huge welcome back.
Welcome home to Alex.
When the Red Sox brought him back
in… in 2021 after he was suspended,
he was very open, talking
about his mistakes.
I made a mistake. I
still love the game.
I still love what I do.
I'm not proud of it,
I'm not happy about it,
but we have to move on.
He took the heat for it.
He didn't try to push it under the
rug. He still doesn't to this day.
[man 2] Alex, you're a cheater!
No garbage cans here tonight!
[Cora] There's a reputation, and,
obviously, uh, I got hit hard.
That was five years ago, bro.

Think you can handle that?
What do you mean?
If you need to go throw three innings
in Pittsburgh, in the big leagues,

[man] What if you're
a big leaguer?
Yeah, so you think you wanna
pitch in the big leagues
maybe tomorrow or the next day?
What?
I said, think you wanna
pitch in the big leagues?
Maybe tomorrow or the next day
or whenever Alex needs you?
Yeah.
You think you can do that?
You're going to the big leagues.
- [man] You're going to the big leagues.
- [clapping]
I got Breslow on the line. AC's
on the line. They can all hear.
[tender music plays]
- And let it out.
- Tears are all right.
- [man] Let it out.
- Tears are all right.
[Tracy] We're getting
through the tears.
Yeah. You guys all
crying or what?
[laughter over phone]
[Tracy] Well, yeah,
we're all… Pretty much.
- Awesome.
- [all laugh]
- [Tracy] Give me a hug, man.
- [Booser] God.
- [Tracy] Good for you. Good for you.
- [man chuckles]
[Booser sighs]
[Tracy] Thirty-two years old,
and it's been a long time,
and you really deserve this.
I'm thrilled for you.
- Good for you, sir.
- Yeah.
Let's go, Boos. Super happy for you, man.
Can't wait to see you buddy. All right?
- [Booser] Thank you. I appreciate it.
- Hey, I'll… I'll call you in a little bit.
Go call your family, and
we'll catch up, okay?
- [Booser] Okay.
- Yeah, congrats, man. Soak it in.
All right. See you.
- [Craig] Thanks, fellas.
- You all right?
[all chuckling]
Nice work, Bres.
- Good news.
- [Craig] Yeah, it's great.
[tender music continues]
[commentator] Back
here at PNC Park,
and the Red Sox have
the hard-throwing lefty
Cam Booser in the house
after they designated Joe
Jacques for assignment.
His mom and dad are here,
as well as his girlfriend.
[Will] The fascinating and
long road to the big leagues,
on the verge of making
his Major League debut.
Bottom 8, Red Sox in command.
[Cora] Come on, Chase.
Keep going. Vamos.
[clapping]
[woman 1 whoops]
[Cora] Vamos, Chase. Nice job.
Boos? Let's go.
Kid, good job. That's
it for tonight.
- [Chase] That's it?
- [Cora] Yeah. Got the other kid going.
Let's get Boos here. [chuckles]
- [player] Your first appearance…
- Oh!
[player] …remember it
or were you unconscious?
[Andrew] Uh, I… I
remember it. Opening Day.
Down two, eighth
inning, on the road,
fly out to right.
Think I punched
out Kendrys Morales
and, uh… got Juan Rivera
maybe to pop up to
left or something.
Big, big fly ball
guy. [chuckles]
[Will] Cam Booser
can really bring it
and about to make his Major League
debut here in Pittsburgh, PA tonight.
[Andrew] Let's go, Boos.
[announcer] Making his Major League
debut, number 71, Cam Booser.
- [crowd cheers]
- [fans] Boos!
- [Cora] Come on, Boos!
- [man 1] Boos!
[Booser] My time with the Twins,
the mental side of the game was
something I really struggled with.
His head is fucking spinning

I had some things going on
in my own life off the field

his first Major League pitch.

second, on his way into third,

with a triple.
[cheers, applause]
- [man 2] Go, Boos!
- [Will] So a real greeting.
[man 3] This guy Booser sucks!
[announcer] Designated
hitter, Andrew McCutchen.
[Will] He sends up
Andrew McCutchen…
[crowd cheers]
…the five-time All-Star.
In high school,
he pitched angry.
Like if he missed by just a
little bit, it would affect him.
[woman 2] Yeah!
[Shane] There was probably
a lot of self-doubt.
[indistinct shouting]
- [Andrew] Whoo!
- [Cora] Wow.
But he never gave up.
[crowd cheers]
[Will] McCutchen down hacking,
and he collects his first K.
Yeah, Boos!
When I retired from the game, I
addressed all the off-the-field issues.
[Will] Friendly hop for
Dalbec as the run comes in,
and he guns down to first base
for out number two.
[Booser] I'd wrapped my identity
up so much into the game
that when I kinda started to find
my identity away from the game,
I found a lot of peace.
- [player] Attaboy.
- Good play, Boos!

- Because I talk too much.
That's my job now. I talk.
[Will] Well, you keep playing baseball

[Will] Inside, it hit him, and
it got him on the right hand.
So far, Yoshida looks okay.
He'll take his base. Alex Cora
wants to talk it over, but…
I was even thinking about bringing
Bobby and steal second here, right?
Bobby, run for him.
Hey, break first pitch, and then,
fucking, if you've got a jump, go.
Yeah, fake break it.
[Will] 7-3, Boston.
[Cora] Hand okay?
- Yeah.
- [Cora] Good.
[Will] Dalbec leading
at first, Wong at third.
I think they might be tempted
to put Dalbec in motion here.
And why not? With a four-run
lead, take a little gamble here.
Go. Go.

miss. Trevino will not throw down.
