The Dead Zone s02e08 Episode Script

Cabin Pressure

I had the perfect life until I was in a coma for six years.
And then I woke up and found my fiancée married to another man.
My son doesn't know who I am.
Everything has changed including me.
One touch and I can see things things that happened, things that will happen.
You should see what I see.
Justine already told me, if I fly on our anniversary again, it will be the last one.
Is this the leading edge of that cold front? You think we're going to top that at flight level 00350? We should, but we might get a few bumps.
I've given up on finding my Justine.
- Yeah, you keep auditioning them.
- Just playing the odds.
- (intercom beeps) - It's Nicole.
Okay, first casualty of the day.
That cranky doctor missed his connection to London.
We're only 30 minutes behind schedule.
He left himself a whopping 15 minutes to change planes in Washington.
I'm not going to lose any sleep over that one.
You guys need anything up here? Such a leading question.
We're good.
You know you broke Michael's heart when you got engaged? Hardly.
He just flirts because he's bored.
Pilots don't have enough to do anymore.
The cookies will be ready in a minute.
- I'll get them.
- I'll go around and pick up the trash.
I can't believe you talked me into this.
People want to hear what Johnny Smith has to say.
About what? I'm not a public speaker, Gene.
About the future.
In troubled times like these everyone wants to know there's hope.
- Boy, did you pick the wrong guy.
- Don't think of this as a convention.
Think of it as another classroom.
All the same? You booked me to speak after Alan Greenspan.
Alan has been an old and dear friend of Faith Heritage.
Be sure to shake his hand, will you? It would be nice to know if the Fed will be lowering the interest rate.
Kidding.
I'm kidding.
What's up with you? You've been restless the entire flight.
Johnny: I'm fine, I just, uh whoever sat here before me was scared of flying.
Chocolate chip cookie? A temptation, but no.
Thank you.
Sure.
So how long before we land? About an hour, I think.
Maybe a little less.
(rumbling) Would you like milk with that? (theme music playing) * Oooh * * Fall in love, fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love.
* We've got a seat gripper in 2-B.
Poor guy.
All I know is that I saw the plane going down.
But when you when you came on board, you didn't see anything.
One would think Yeah, sure.
I should be the safest guy in the world to travel with, right? You and I both know my abilities don't always work that way.
You said that you're picking up the fear from the last passenger in the seat? Maybe it's the paranoia you're feeling, the idea that something could go wrong.
Or God forbid, you're picking something up from a future flight.
No.
I saw the stewardess hit the ceiling and die.
It was this flight, Gene.
When? I don't know.
Excuse me, could I get another cookie, please? - Sure.
- Thanks.
Oh my God! Stay in your seats, with your seatbelts fastened.
(woman yells) That's just normal turbulence.
Nothing to worry about.
It was 10:54.
- We have to tell the pilot.
- Do you think he's going to believe us? I'll vouch for you myself.
We'll tell him about your track record.
Oh sure, tell him about the tabloids while we're at it.
The Elvis cover should convince him to the land the plane, huh? Gene, I need more.
I need to know how.
And why? Johnny: Or who? You don't think someone aboard the plane might be planning something? I'm just going to take a little walk, okay? (giggling, chatting) Someone in row 26 has a gun.
How could they get it past the screening devices? Are you certain? All right.
I think I should speak to the pilot first.
I have a certain credibility.
I can be very convincing when I need to be.
I'll call you when I need you.
Excuse me, I was wondering if I might have a moment to speak with the captain? I'm sorry, but under the new security precautions once the flight is under way, the captain To be honest, I have a concern about the plane.
- A concern? - It's really quite urgent.
- Perhaps I can help - Miss, I don't mean to be rude, - your name is? - Lorraine Newbury Lorraine.
I'm Gene Purdy, the Head of Faith Heritage Alliance.
Yes, of course, Reverend, I know who you are.
But our regulations are very specific I have information that someone managed to bring a gun on board this flight.
The lives of every passenger are in eminent danger.
Lorraine, believe me, neither of us has time to stand on ceremony.
Get me the captain.
(door buzzes, beeps) - What's up? - A passenger needs to speak to you.
He says someone on board has a gun.
What? Look, he's not a kook.
He's that Reverend Gene Purdy from television.
Go on.
I got it.
Thank you.
I'm Captain Klein.
Now what's this about a gun? Someone in row 26.
Will you get me the passenger manifest? - You saw this gun? - No, my colleague did.
- In a manner of speaking.
- Manner of speaking? I'm traveling with Johnny Smith.
Perhaps you've heard of him? No, well, that's too bad.
You see he has sort of uh second sight.
John, John.
Johnny is really quite remarkable.
He's helped the police with a number of major cases.
- John Smith, Captain Klein.
- What exactly was it you saw? I couldn't tell which passenger, - but I got a vision - A vision? He has psychic visions.
If you recall the Markoff kidnapping Was one of the people in that row a Korean woman? There was a Korean woman on one side of the plane.
She's an air marshal.
You're not supposed to know that, and I don't know how you do, - but there's nothing to worry about.
- There is something to worry about.
I saw this plane go into a dive at 10:54 tonight, Captain.
I thought this was about a gun? He was looking for a cause for the dive, which him led him to the gun.
It's a felony to disrupt a commercial flight.
We have less than 40 minutes to figure out what's wrong with this plane.
Nothing is going to go wrong Whether I believe that you have visions or not, Mr.
Smith, on this plane I deal in facts, not bad feelings.
Now, we are experiencing turbulence tonight, maybe that could cause an abrupt change in altitude that might look like a dive.
But it's my responsibility to prevent that.
So, I'd better get back to the cockpit.
And I would like you both to return to your seats, now.
- Thanks a lot.
- Hey, don't shoot the messenger.
- I didn't know.
- Keep an eye on them.
Somebody got the jitters? You could say that.
We have a self-proclaimed psychic who goes by the unlikely name of John Smith.
He has a bad feeling about this flight.
John Smith? I saw something about him in the news.
Now he's supposed to be the real deal.
Yeah, so is the monster in Loch Ness.
Hey, I've seen photographs of that thing.
Why is it my plane? A magicians' convention last week, psychics this week.
Put Tom Jones and a couple of show-girls back there, you'd have a Vegas revue.
He could be right, it might just be turbulence.
You saw a dive, you didn't see a crash.
The plane was tilted, Gene.
People were screaming.
Stay in your seats.
Keep your seatbelts fastened.
Please remain calm.
If oxygen is needed the masks will fall.
Please remember to put your own mask on before helping others around you.
(Gene praying) No! Johnny? I think we can rule out turbulence.
(beeping) I'm going to tell the captain to check the right engine.
- What's that called, port or starboard? - Starboard I think.
- Who are you calling? - I'm going straight to the top.
Yes, I'll hold.
Martin Ghent, CEO of Trans-Colony.
- You know him? - No, but as you're fond of saying, "I know people who know people who know him.
" I'm almost certain he's a member of the Harvard Club.
Mr.
Smith, would you please return to your seat? Ladies, one of our engines is going to explode.
The starboard engine that is starboard over there, right? I have to speak to the captain.
I have to go to the main cabin, but I'll be right back.
I read about what you did last May.
- That graduation party the fire.
- Yeah.
Listen, will you please help me? - I can't.
- Tell him to take me seriously.
It happens when you touch people.
You saw something before when when I gave you the cookie, didn't you about me? I just got engaged.
I'm getting married in June.
We can change things.
Nothing has to happen.
I have to talk to the captain.
The door is locked from the inside.
I'm sorry.
You can't get in there.
Mr.
Smith? I'm Special Agent Park.
Lorraine told me about your concerns.
I'm trying to warn the crew about a legitimate problem I'm sure it seems very legitimate to you, but these people have a job to do and you're making that difficult.
You'll be sitting with me for the rest of the flight.
Let me explain.
I need to speak to the captain.
Sir, if you don't come with me right now, I will have to take restraining action.
And I assure you, I am fully capable of using any force necessary.
So let's not do anything that might upset the other passengers.
Tell the captain to check the starboard engine.
No, he can't call me back, I'm on one of his planes.
And yes, there is a bit of a (softly) A bit of a problem.
Would you put your cane down please? - Are you on any medication Mr.
Smith? - No.
- Any history of mental illness? - No.
- Ever been convicted of a crime? - No, I haven't.
I'm a rational person.
I'm a teacher, I don't cause trouble.
When you know the world is going to crash in 32 minutes, it's hard to play by normal rules.
What can I do to convince you? - I'm going to pat you down.
- I came through security, go ahead.
A lot of people do, Mr.
Smith.
I like defining security on my own terms.
Want to try a different altitude? The SAT's dropped three degrees in the last minute.
Not yet.
We'll see if the chop gets any worse.
- (intercom beeps) - It's Nicole.
Things quiet down back there? Lorraine had to call the air marshal.
Mr.
Smith had another vision.
He said that the starboard engine is going to explode.
What do you think, Mike? Run an instrument check? The engine is running fine.
I've read about this guy.
Yeah, I'm sure he loves to be in the headlines, as in, " Pilot makes emergency landing based on psychic prediction.
" Just the opposite.
I heard he hates publicity.
- So did I.
- Yet you both know this fellow's name.
- Michael - Nicole, thank you we'll handle this.
Check with Washington Center about our place in the stack.
Why did you drop out of Brown? - What? - You dropped out of school.
Why? Is this some act you do, like at parties? You don't believe in psychic abilities, do you? I'm not paid to be open-minded.
Johnny: I can prove I'm telling the truth.
What? Your St.
Christopher medal, can I see it? - No.
Mr.
Smith, sit down.
- I just want to hold the medal.
Let me hold the medal, or I'm going to start yelling that the plane is going to crash.
What happen to "I'm a rational person, - I don't cause trouble"? - I'm not asking for much.
If you don't believe me, you've got nothing to lose.
Can I have it back now? This was your sister's medallion.
You gave it to her.
Her name was Anne, but everyone called her Terri, your older sister.
You loved her.
You always worshipped the ground she walked on.
"It's for when you cross Lisbon Street against the lights, Terri.
Or when you're out parking with one of those guys from E.
L.
Don't forget, Terri.
Don't forget.
" Stop it.
It was speed, wasn't it? Then meth? She tried calling you the night that she died.
But you never called her back.
You had midterms.
- You've always blamed yourself - Please.
She was wearing this when they found her.
She'd worn this medal for 10 years.
She remembered you, Kelly.
She never forgot.
She never forgot.
Shut up! In less than 30 minutes, every passenger on this plane is going to die.
How many brothers and sisters do they have waiting for them to get home, Kelly? How many? Sit down! You still have a chance, Kelly.
You still have a chance to save them.
Yes, Mr.
Ghent, I understand.
Mm-hmm.
All right, I'll hear him out.
Mm-hmm.
No, no problem.
Thank you.
Goodbye.
Un-friggin' believable.
Mr.
Smith, I've been instructed by the CEO of this airline, to treat you with courtesy and listen to what you have to say.
So, you have three minutes.
I need you to check the starboard engine.
Yes, I just ran a computer diagnostic on the entire system, at the request of my boss.
The computer says the plane is fine.
Isn't it possible the computer was wrong? This is the most modern safety technology known to man.
You can't expect me to ignore it based on Captain, this plane will dive at 10:54 PM.
The starboard engine will explode.
Could a bomb have been placed somewhere? Security on the ground is thorough these days.
What else might cause this? I suppose a bird strike or another obstruction in flight could damage an engine, but these things are rarely catastrophic.
Tonight, something will be.
Captain, perhaps we should consider landing early.
If only to remove Mr.
Smith from the plane.
We're about to begin our descent into the Washington area anyway.
I promise you I will do everything within my power, to get us down safely.
Sorry about these.
May God forgive me.
Mr.
Ghent asked me to convey his apologies for the discomfort you've suffered.
As a token of our sincere regret you will be receiving a free mileage upgrade coupon for future travel with Trans-Colony.
I won't be needing it.
E- Per is good, N1 is good, N2 is okay.
Oil quantity, oil pressure check.
- No caution lights.
- Good.
I have to admit I was getting a little nervous.
- (banging) - Okay, that wasn't turbulence.
Autopilot's acting up.
Just keep an eye on it.
Right.
Traffic control: TCA 2413, holding instructions.
Go ahead Washington.
You are cleared to Bonzo intersection to hold northwest righthand turns.
Flight level 1-9-0, 20 nautical mile legs approved.
Expected further clearance 0400.
TCA 2413, cleared to Bonzo, right turns, 20 nautical mile legs, flight level 1-9-0.
EFC 0300.
You don't want to request priority clearance to land? Why would I want to do that? Was he prepared to listen, finally? Because Martin Ghent promised me - My God, handcuffs? - Sir, please return to your seat.
- I'm Eugene Purdy of the Faith - I don't care if you're the Pope, I want you to return to your seat.
Johnny: He's going to take this plane into a dive.
He says, "God forgive me.
" He pushes two levers forward, the dive, and then a moment later, an engine explodes.
Fuel ignites.
The cabin hull breaches.
You're suggesting Captain Klein will deliberately destroy this aircraft? I saw it, Kelly.
Clearly as I saw you and your sister.
I've flown with him at least a dozen times.
How well do you know him? What's going on in his personal life? - Sir, I insist you return to your - We have less than 15 minutes to live Kelly, is it? I'm not going anywhere.
If you want to handcuff me too, be my guest.
But you'll hear me out.
I believe that God had a specific purpose for putting Johnny Smith on this plane.
We were supposed to travel on a private jet tonight; it was grounded for repairs.
And then, we missed our first flight.
Call it fate, or destiny, or God's will.
It's no coincidence that Johnny is on board.
It is also God's will that you are on board this plane, Kelly.
Because Johnny can't hope to save all these passengers without your help.
The only question is: Will you accept the role that fate has created for you? Or will you regret it for the rest of your very short life? You're wearing a St.
Christopher medal, patron saint of travelers? Perhaps it's no accident that you're wearing that tonight.
What do you expect me to do? - Relieve the captain of command? - Can the copilot land the plane? - Of course - That would solve a lot of problems.
How am I going to explain that when we land? Kelly, at least this way we land.
I'll speak with the captain.
That was a good sermon, Reverend.
I told you I can be convincing when I need to be.
Thank God she's not an atheist.
She's scared to death.
She really believes this guy Smith can see what's going to happen.
It's Kelly Park.
(buzzes) We'll be on the ground soon.
Is he giving you any more trouble? Captain, I'd like to ask you to voluntarily turn command over to Mr.
Black.
What in God's name are you talking about? He says you're going to take the plane down.
- Are you actually worried? - I'd feel better if Mr.
Black was This whole flight is becoming absolutely surreal.
Please go back to your seat, and let me do my job.
I can't do that.
You holster that weapon in my cockpit Mr.
Black, can you land this plane by yourself? - I don't want to.
- Can you land the plane or not? Yes.
Captain, will you please step outside with me? Or what? Are you going to remove me by force? I'd rather not alarm the passengers.
By all means, let's not do anything rash like that.
So that's it? We stopped it? (exhales loudly) Justine, I'm sorry.
I love you.
What? Now it's the copilot.
- I don't understand? - Now it's the copilot who destroys the plane.
He does it exactly the same way as the pilot did.
- Johnny, that's - I saw it.
I don't question that.
But Johnny, a conspiracy? I think we have to begin to ask ourselves is it possible that you're wrong? What if your abilities are affected by a pressurized cabin? I think I understand this, Gene.
I understand this.
I've got to go talk to the captain again.
No, John Give me a good reason why you would put this plane into a dive.
Go to hell! - There is no good reason.
- There has to be.
A good reason, Captain.
That's the only thing that makes sense.
Because your copilot is going to try the very same thing in nine minute There's only one good reason why both pilots would do that they weren't trying to destroy the plane.
They were trying to save it.
Everything okay now? I've made a bargain to get my plane back.
Mr.
Smith is going to tell us exactly what he saw.
He believes that we will respond to some emergency condition in seven minutes by taking the plane into a rapid descent.
So please, tell me exactly what you saw me doing.
Your hand was there.
Those are the throttles.
They control the engines.
You pushed them both all the way forward.
The starboard engine exploded and the cabin depressurized.
That's impossible.
Even if we did go to max power, which we never do, the engine wouldn't explode.
- It just doesn't happen.
- Let's just think about this.
If we'd stalled and we were trying to recover, then we'd go to max power.
If there was an oil problem in the engine and we were trying to shut it down Can I touch these throttles? Touch, but don't move.
- Are you okay? - Where does this air come from? The bleeds? The air comes in from outside.
- But from where? - Through the engines.
(wind blowing) There's ice on the wing.
A lot of it.
- No, both wings are clear.
- All the anti-icing is on.
It's not working.
Not on the starboard side at least.
- My instruments say it is.
- Your instruments are wrong.
The first thing you learn as a pilot is instruments don't lie.
- You don't think it's possible? - It's not that it's not possible, but it is improbable.
I've never had trouble with this system, I've been flying commercial jets for 15 years.
If ice builds up on the starboard wing, how does that affect your flight? It depends how bad it is.
Could you land the plane? - We'd have difficulty maintaining lift.
- Then what? - The plane could stall - How would you fix it? First, I'd go to max power on both engines.
Max power? That's right, Captain, all the way forward.
Ladies and gentleman, please bring your seats back to their full upright and locked position, and make sure all luggage is safely secured.
We expect to be landing shortly.
(passengers exclaim) Whoa! Copilot: Mike, the autopilot.
It could be compensating for the ice.
That's what happened in '94 on that American Eagle flight.
Go back to the main cabin and check the wing for ice.
You two, go back to your seats.
- Captain, I might be able to help you.
- You know planes? No, but you have a lot of decisions to make in the next few minutes, I want to help you make the right ones.
(sighs) A psychic navigator.
Sit down, before you kill yourself.
Fasten your belt and don't touch anything without asking.
(baby crying) Nicole.
Nicole, come on.
We've got a job to do.
Mike, he's right.
I can see the ice under the wing.
Oh! Stay there, Colin, strap yourself in.
Are you all right? I need to take it down to warmer altitude.
The heat and the friction will break up the ice.
(beeping) Autopilot's failed! Mayday, mayday, Washington Center, this is TCA 2413.
Control: Roger, TCA 2413.
Go ahead.
I am at flight level 1-9-0, with an icing problem, I need to descend immediately.
Control: Roger that.
Northern Atlantic 560, turn left 227 Grab that! Push it forward as hard as you can, we need to keep the nose down.
Control: Immediate right turn to 1-2-0.
TCA 2413, you're cleared to descend to 8,000 feet.
- The stick is shaking.
- That's the stall warning.
We need to get more airspeed.
All my training tells me to go to max power.
If you push the starboard engine to max power, it will explode.
- Odds against that are astronomical.
- I don't care what the odds are, okay? I told you the time it would happen, I told you about the ice.
Okay, okay.
Okay, if I lower the flaps, I can get some lift.
Wait, wait, wait.
You can't.
They're all iced up.
- The plane will roll.
- I need airspeed, God damn it! God forgive me, it's the only thing I know to do in this situation.
We can't! You can't.
Fine, hell with the starboard.
Max power to port engine.
- (people gasp) - (baby cries) Stay in your seats with your seatbelts fastened.
Please remain calm.
If oxygen is needed, the masks will drop.
Please remember to put your own mask on before helping others around you.
(crying, plane accelerating) (beeping) Come on! (shattering ice) I have control again.
Washington Center, this is TCA 2413 - leveling at 8,000.
- Control: Roger.
Say your intentions.
We'd like to continue to Dulles to land.
Roger.
Turn left to heading 0-2-0, maintain 8,000 feet.
TCA 2413 heading 0-2-0.
Mr.
Smith, about some of the comments I made earlier Don't worry about it.
But I'm still holding you to that free upgrade coupon.
Johnny: Take care, Captain.
What happened? I cannot begin to tell you.
Check out the starboard engine vibration meter.
- It's pegged.
- It was fine when we checked it.
Yeah, before the descent.
Now we're losing oil quantity.
The engine would have seized at max power.
- The explosion could very well have - Yeah.
Ladies and gentleman, this is Captain Klein.
I apologize for the disturbance, we had an emergency situation, but we have resolved the problem.
So, flight attendants, please prepare for landing.
Woman: Oh, way to go.
Nice flight, huh, sir? (theme music playing) - No no! - Yes yes! You're grounded!
