The Dead Zone s02e10 Episode Script

Dead Men Tell Tales

I had the perfect life until I was in a coma for six years.
And then I woke up and found my fiancée married to another man.
My son doesn't know who I am.
Everything has changed including me.
One touch and I can see things things that happened, things that will happen.
You should see what I see.
I've been doing this a long time, and I think I know when someone's lying.
And you're lying.
You are lying, Mr.
Smith.
There's something going on there.
- You ask me, it's the girl.
- I don't know.
It's always the girl.
"Cherchez la femme.
" - What's that? - French.
"Look for the woman.
" - I didn't know you speak French.
- I don't.
He's all yours, Sheriff.
I got bigger fish to fry.
- You talk to the hospital? - Is this about the girl? - I only asked because - Is this why you're blocking a major CID investigation? Because you have a soft spot for the girl? I only met the girl once, Walt.
I barely know her.
Okay.
Except for when John Smith barely knows somebody, he knows their past, their present and their future.
And in her case, it is not a very pretty one.
You gonna charge me with something, Walt? Charge me.
Otherwise, let me go, 'cause I got nothing else to say.
You're not going anywhere, John.
You are in this up to your neck.
And don't think for a minute that I won't cut it off if I have to.
We are going to go through this again, from the top, starting with the murder.
I told you it wasn't a murder, it was self-defense.
I have the crime scene report.
Small-time hood Mickey Doyle walks into the store with a gun and Cathan Donnegal's wise guys shoot him and kill him.
They shot him.
But I'm the one who killed Mickey Doyle.
Johnny: I thought Cathan Donnegal was just a guy who sold plumbing fixtures.
I found him in the yellow pages.
I definitely recommend the extended warranty.
Covers everything, full replacement, no questions asked.
- Cash or credit? - Mr.
Donnegal, listen to me.
A man is going to come in here with a gun.
I'm sorry? He might be a robber.
He's about 5'9".
He's got deep-set blue eyes and a goatee.
He's going to be wearing a black fedora.
Who are you? Why are you telling me this? My name is Smith, John Smith.
I have abilities, psychic abilities.
Psychic abilities? Hey, you're the I read about him in "The Star.
" He predicted that whole J- Lo/Ben Affleck thing.
- Shut up.
- I know this is hard to believe, but he could shoot you, this man.
- I'm not kidding, call the police.
- Yes, I'll be sure to do that.
I'm serious.
You need to call the police right now.
He threw in the extended warranty for free, and said, "Have a nice day," and said the new fixtures would be delivered in a week.
And Donnegal is a man of his word.
Reporter: Appearing at a fundraiser in Penobscot County, Stillson took a moment to call for the defeat of Prop.
151, the Indian casino initiative.
I think the people of this county need to take a hard look at this measure and listen to Sheriff Bannerman on the subject.
I do so myself, and not just because his wife is a member of my staff.
But seriously, it's about the quality of life in Maine, and as Maine goes, so goes the nation.
I have the greatest respect for the Native American people of this country, - however the facts are the facts, - (buzzer sounds) And in every township that's invited gambling into their midst, they've also invited crime and moral decay.
This measure rolls the dice on the life of our children.
Frankly, I don't like the stakes.
I don't like the odds, and I don't like Proposition 151.
Yeah? We have your fixtures for you, Mr.
Smith.
(buzzer) Please excuse the inconvenience.
- He's clean.
- We need you to come outside with us.
You got a jacket? You're gonna need a jacket, it's chilly out.
Is this the guy you saw? - Name's Mickey Doyle.
- What happened? Exactly what you said was gonna happen, up to a point.
- That's not what I expected.
- Not what Mickey expected either.
The description you gave fit him to a T, so when he came in, we were ready.
- You killed him because I - You got nothing to worry about.
We kept your name out of it with the cops so far.
As a token of his appreciation, Mr.
Donnegal's going to tear up the bill for the fixtures.
But he does have one more favor to ask of you.
- A favor? - We need you to tell us who sent him.
(theme music playing) * Oooh * * Fall in love, fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Feel no shame for what you are * * Fall in love, fall in love * * Fall in love.
* All right, look, I can't get involved in this, okay? Mr.
Smith John, my reputation is sort of on the line here.
The truth is Mr.
Donnegal doesn't know what to make of you.
But I'm a new-age kind of guy, I put in a good word for you.
- Thanks.
But I can't - I'd consider it a personal favor if you'd give us your cooperation on this matter.
(gunshot) I really can't take no for an answer, John.
Give the man room to work.
Johnny: I don't like touching dead bodies.
Call it a peculiarity of mine.
Usually it takes me somewhere I don't want to go.
Not this time.
What'd you see? - He was kissing a girl.
- That's it? That's all I saw.
At least Mickey got lucky before he passed.
Well, touch him again.
- It doesn't work that way.
- Yeah well, put your heart into it.
There's nothing.
Look, I really can't go back empty-handed, John.
I need more, his personal things, things he's touched.
Fine.
We'll go back to Mickey's place.
We gotta get the Mick back to the cemetery for a touch-up before the service this afternoon.
- Coroner left him in a mess.
- Some other time then.
We'll take John's car over to Mick's apartment.
We'll meet you there.
That okay with you, John? Thug: It's not much, but Mickey called it home.
Mickey was into that King Arthur stuff.
Maybe the phone, who was the last person he talked to? Mickey: Really, Ma, I'm fine I don't know, I just don't feel like going out tonight.
I'm just going to stay home and watch something on TV.
Yeah.
Hey, Ma, they're doing Knights of the Round Table on Discovery Channel.
Yeah.
I know.
I will.
I will eat.
Okay, I promise.
I love you too, Ma.
- His mother.
- Figures, he was always a mama's boy.
Here, look the championship season.
That's me, I played first base.
And Mickey, he was a little guy, but quick.
He played shortstop.
Donnegal was on second base.
Whoa, Nelly.
You are good.
That's Doyle, Donnegal to Fitz.
That's the best double-play combo in the Babe Ruth League.
- If Mickey was so close to Donnegal - Yeah, I know.
That's just how it's done.
They always send the guy you least expect to do the job.
Except in this case, whoever it was, they weren't counting on you.
You got something? It's pictures of the seashore.
- It's the same girl.
- We haven't got all day, John.
I got a funeral to attend for an old friend.
Hey, look, I can't control what I see.
Well, you better see something soon, 'cause I'd hate for you to make a mistake, like missing an important prognostication.
'Cause if anything else happens to Cathan Donnegal, I'd have to feel that's our responsibility, yours and mine.
I'm not getting anything else.
Well fine, we can go to the cemetery.
A lot of players will be there, you can shake some hands.
That's the guy that told Mr.
Donnegal Mickey was coming for him.
Expensive proposition, John.
Don't get your heart set on anything.
That's her, the girl he was kissing.
Nina and Mickey? No, that's not possible.
There's a separation of the classes involved.
You know, like on the Titanic? Come on.
Mr.
Donnegal, you remember John.
Nina, this is a friend of mine, Johnny Smith.
Hello, Johnny Smith.
Nice to meet you.
(camera clicking) Man: Looks like we got a new player.
Walt: Oh Jeez.
Man: Isn't that what's-his-name? Yeah, that's what's-his-name.
Since when is he involved with organized crime? - He's not.
- No, he just goes to their funerals.
Johnny: All morning I'd been looking for a chance to get out of this.
But after I saw that Stillson was involved, I wasn't in such a hurry to leave anymore.
My first thought was you got a tip from your friend the sheriff that Mickey was coming for me.
Guys like me know how to use the internet too, you know.
Well, if that were true, why would I warn you? To set me up or to gain my trust, or both.
It's an old police trick, maybe you're just the newest twist.
If you are, I promise you'll regret it, Mr.
Smith.
Now I don't read minds but I can read faces.
You saw something when you touched Nina, didn't you? To be honest, I saw her in bed with someone.
Hope it wasn't me, that'd be uncomfortable.
It was Greg Stillson.
I believe Nina is acquainted with Mr.
Stillson.
You believe he might be involved in what happened? What if he were? It'd be the end of a promising political career.
- I don't know yet.
- There's certain business matters, ours for example, that I would never share with Nina.
But I do trust her as much as I trust anyone.
Then, I trusted Mickey too.
Stillson? He's a politician, last guy on earth you want to trust, but I don't know why he'd want to kill me.
What's your relationship with him? Now when I hear questions like that, I start to worry about you again.
You just worry about the answers, I'll ask the questions.
Johnny's going to go along with you, Nina.
I hope that's okay.
Of course.
I expect to hear from you later, John.
Don't be a stranger.
Mind if I smoke? Actually, I Forgive me.
It's not my fault, it's the cigarette companies.
They knew I'd become addicted.
- How did you know Mickey? - I just met him.
- I didn't know him very well - Neither did I.
Until somebody told me he was dead, I didn't even know his last name.
He was just Mickey.
Do you work for Cathan? Actually he works for me.
Cathan Donnegal works for you? Yeah, I bought some fixtures from him.
He's doing the installation work for me.
A hotel chain? No.
Just a leaky sink at my house.
- Thanks.
- For? Putting out the cigarette.
Pour me a drink? Sure.
Vodka and ice.
I'm curious.
Why did Cathan put you in the car with me? Actually, I think they were just short on limo space.
Mr.
Donnegal just picked this car by chance.
Cathan Donnegal never does anything by chance.
(music playing) - Can I get you a refill, Nina? - Yeah, thanks.
That'd be great.
Well, now this is my kind of party.
More girls than boys.
How you doing? You are very good at that, sweetheart.
You could do that professionally.
- What? - Remove my clothes.
Well Elliman: Greg has the confidence of the tribal leaders, we've got the regulatory chairs sewn up.
Run interference after Prop.
151 passes.
Why don't we talk business later, Mr.
Elliman? It's a party, have a good time.
Cathan, you are obviously a man with the right priorities in life.
(cell phone ringing) - Yeah? - What the hell are you doing in a limo with a hooker in a funeral procession for a mob guy? - Are you okay? - Oh, hi.
Yeah, everything's going great here.
Yeah, so maybe I'll see you later then, Mom? Look, we have to talk.
Talking to your mother now you sound like Mickey.
Are you the new Mickey, John Smith? - The new Mickey? - Yeah, Mickey used to look out for me now and then for Cathan.
Maybe that's why Cathan put you in the car.
No, he didn't mention it.
Well he wouldn't.
Somehow it just happens when Cathan wants it to happen.
See you around, John Smith.
See you around, Nina.
Walt: This could be the break we needed now that I have you on the inside.
You don't have me on the inside.
Donnegal knows about us.
- You shouldn't even be here.
- Listen, John, I am not playing games here, all right? I need your help, and you're going to need mine to get out of this.
What? The psychic witness protection program? We got a gangland shooting in my county and I don't like that.
And at the same time, someone is marrying the mob to the Indians and I don't like that either.
If you know anything, anything at all, you better tell me right now.
You should ask your wife about her boss, Walt.
What are you talking about? Stillson? Maybe.
Are you telling me that Greg Stillson is involved with Cathan Donnegal? There's a relationship there, I saw them at a party together.
You saw them or you "saw" them? Mickey saw them.
How the hell am I supposed to use that in a court of law? You're not.
You should wait a few minutes before you leave here, okay? I assume you're not here to volunteer.
- Stillson around? - Hm-mm.
- He's with Sonny.
- On a first-name basis now? Yeah, and I call Mr.
Stillson "Greg" too.
What is it that you have against him? I wish you weren't here helping him get elected.
Oh ho.
Listen, no one's helped him more than you have, getting Harrison Fisher to withdraw from the race.
I'm still trying to make up for it, all right, Sarah? Greg thinks that you've seen things about his past.
Now, he's made mistakes, but he admits that.
I'm more worried about the mistakes he hasn't made yet.
You've seen something about the future? Yeah, and you don't want to tell me.
I'm hoping it'll go away so I don't have to tell you or anyone else about it.
You want to see mistakes? See what happens if I quit and leave Greg Stillson in the hands of someone like Sonny Elliman.
I mean, I feel like I am fighting with this man for Greg Stillson's political soul.
You're assuming he has one? I think he could be a good congressman with the right people around him.
I believe that, Johnny.
Or I wouldn't be here.
And with the wrong people around him, like Sonny Elliman, who knows what could happen, right? Yes.
We finally agree on one thing.
You know what, Sarah? Maybe you're right.
Maybe you shouldn't quit.
- Maybe you're not supposed to quit.
- Quit? Not while I have a say in the matter.
Sarah's my conscience.
Every candidate needs a conscience, right, Sonny? Sonny doesn't really do the conscience thing, but that's my little secret.
To win, you need a Sonny Elliman and a Sarah Bannerman on your side.
- Truth is, I'd be lost without her.
- Oh, I believe you.
Sorry I'm not shaking your hand in a proper greeting.
I've been eating barbecue chicken sent over by the Ladies Who Lunch League.
I got sticky fingers, you understand.
So what brings you out this way? Actually, we have mutual friend.
Mickey Doyle? Sorry, John.
Famous second sight must have failed you this time, - I've never heard of the fellow.
- No? - Used to work for Cathan Donnegal.
- You know it's always hard when old friends end up on opposite sides of the fence.
You've known John a lot longer than me, but we're all adults here, we can agree to disagree.
I'm not quitting.
Good.
Past future.
My office, John.
Want you to try some of this sticky chicken.
You'll like it.
Johnny: Your conscience know where you stand on the Indian casino proposition? - He's against it.
- Well, well now, Sonny, you can run but you can't hide from Johnny Smith, we all know that.
That's what I love about you, John.
I'm on my toes when you're around.
No, it's politics, plain and simple.
Publicly I'd never say it, but privately, I think the casino initiative would be an economic boon for this region and I don't mind quietly promoting it.
Giving a helping hand to Cathan Donnegal in the process, right? Well, Donnegal is a local, established community leader and a businessman who supports my campaign.
And I gotta say, John, I welcome that support.
Well, Donnegal asked me to find out who sent a low-level hood named Mickey Doyle to kill him.
Maybe someone involved with the casino initiative? I don't generally try to kill people who help finance my campaign, John.
- Donnegal apparently doesn't think so.
- You be careful what you tell Donnegal.
You don't understand the crowd you're involved with.
You don't understand the crowd you're involved with.
The interesting thing about your visions, John you're the only one that sees 'em.
"Mickey got into a fight with Sonny Elliman.
" - Over what? - I was hoping you could tell me.
He wasn't doing anything special, driving Nina around.
- Where? - Wherever she wanted to go.
What about the car he was driving? Do you know where I can find it? Right out front where he left it.
Keys? All right.
Take it for a spin.
Do some sightseeing.
These are for Nina, she knows what to do with them.
Why put the girl in the middle of this? I can handle it myself.
The sheriff's office is all over this casino thing.
She's the perfect go-between, she's a party girl.
Whoever she's with, people think it's for one thing and don't look further.
So Mickey was driving the girl that day.
That's all.
- That's what Donnegal told me.
- Nothing else? Like he wasn't carrying cash for Donnegal for delivery? - No special instructions? - No.
'Cause I gotta believe that some serious money was changing hands.
I wouldn't know.
Okay.
All right, then what? Johnny: I wanted to find out where Mickey took Nina that day.
It was the kind of car that Mickey would drive, all right.
I was getting to know him pretty well by now.
You wouldn't find him in one of those imports.
Straight-A American from Detroit for Mickey Doyle.
- Mind if I ask you a question? - Sure.
When's your birthday? I haven't been asked that since I was 10.
What's next, my favorite color? Didn't mean to pry.
September 23rd.
Winter child.
I got news for you, September's in the fall.
Ahh a baby only really begins to see the world when he's three months old.
That's when he smiles for the first time.
By then it was winter.
Snow still makes me smile.
It's funny stuff.
- And cold.
- And cold, that's right.
And wet.
- And complicated.
- Very complicated.
No two snowflakes are alike, right? Hey, no two anything.
Now you know my birthday, you're going to have to buy me a present.
Oh yeah? What do you want? Mmm, now let me think.
You shouldn't have to think about what you want.
You should know.
I want to go home.
Oh, yeah? Where's home? It was a joke, Mickey.
Oh.
I don't get it.
- (chuckles) - Never mind.
No, where's home, Nina? St.
Paul.
Oh, yeah, that's in Missouri, right? In Minnesota.
Lots of snow, lots of TV, lots of pickups with funny bumper stickers.
Yeah you must miss it, huh? My mom and I used to fight all the time.
I don't think we'd fight now.
So why don't you go back? Why do you drive me around, Mickey? I don't know, I like looking after you.
For Cathan? No, I mean I like driving you.
What if you didn't do what Cathan told you to? What if I asked you to drive me all the way home? To Minnesota? What, tonight? Well, what would Cathan do? To you, to me? Well, I mean maybe he'd be okay with it, I don't know.
You've know Cathan a long time, you think he'd be okay with it? I mean, maybe if you asked him.
I did once.
He bought me a diamond necklace and put it gently around my neck.
- That was his answer? - It wasn't a going-away present.
I'm sorry about that.
Don't be.
I like my diamonds.
No two are alike.
Almost as good as snowflakes.
Johnny: Stockbridge, Massachusetts we were driving to the Menaki Indian Reservation and one of the biggest casinos in the Northeast.
Wait here.
I'm sorry, only authorized personnel allowed in here.
Oh, man! I was hoping to get an interview for a job as a dealer.
I got 10 years in Atlantic City.
We're fully staffed.
Today's not my lucky day.
Or maybe it is.
* I tell you * * Everything's gonna be all right * So much for my legacy.
* I say * * Everything's gonna be all right * - (coins jingling) - * I wanna make love with you * * Make everything all right * * Come on * * I wanna make love tonight * * I say * * That we'll make love tonight * * I want to make love with you, darling * * Make everything all right * * Come on * * I want to make love tonight * Dealer: Shooter wins.
- * I say * - Sir? Would you come with us? Round up his money and take it to the window.
* I wanna make love with you, darling * * Make everything all right * Sit down.
I'll be with you in a moment.
Nina: I was expecting Greg to be here.
Not a good idea to put Greg in a casino, not really the kind of photo op we go for.
You brought something? Johnny: Can't see a thing, Walt.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
This time it didn't.
You've been recognized, Mr.
Smith.
- "I see aliens among us"? - Actually that was another psychic.
- I don't see aliens.
- No? - No.
- Just numbers? Johnny: They took a snapshot of me for their wall of shame.
Banned for life I knew Bruce would be heartbroken.
Elliman: You know what I'd love to do? - I'd love to buy you dinner.
- Sorry, I have plans.
There's cash burning a hole in my pocket.
- Gotta get rid of some of it.
- I really can't.
You don't want me to spend money on you? - I told you, I have plans.
- I do too and they involve you.
Why should I have to change my plans because of you? - Is that fair? - Please don't touch me.
Is there something wrong with me? I know you're not shy.
What would Greg say if he could see you hitting on me? He'd say, "Bueno gusto.
" Greg signed off on this deal.
You're mine for the night.
Get off! Nina, you okay? Come on, let's go.
Let's get out of here.
Johnny: Mickey drove Nina straight home that night, and I decided to do the same thing.
It was time she and I had a talk about Sonny Elliman and Greg Stillson.
I hate to see you like this, Nina.
You shouldn't have to be doing these things, you know? Cathan? Cathan got no right.
You got to get out of this.
You gotta go back home, back to St.
Paul.
Johnny: That's when I realized what it was all about: Not casinos, not Stillson, just a kiss the one and only kiss from Nina.
But for Mickey who watched shows about King Arthur on the Discovery Channel, it was a kiss that raised him to knighthood.
He was gonna see to it that Nina got home, and Cathan Donnegal was not going to stop him.
(screams) No! (dials) Yeah, I need an ambulance, please.
What the hell do you think you're doing? - You didn't do it.
- Since I don't know what "it" is, - probably not.
- Somebody tried to kill Nina.
Yeah, she runs with some heavy hitters.
Is she okay? She was on her way to the hospital when I left her.
Who would do this? Same somebody who sent Mickey to kill you, maybe? No.
- No, but you know who got to Mickey.
- Mickey did this on his own.
- Mickey never did anything on his own.
- He was in love with her.
He could have had her.
All he had to do was ask.
Why did he think he had to kill me? That's one of those questions I can't answer if you don't already know.
And that's it? You're sure? Poor dumb Mickey.
(laughs) Oh, you did good, John.
I'm going to give you $10,000 for your time.
I hope that's enough.
What I do isn't for sale.
I want to keep it that way.
Now I have a problem with that, John.
See if I don't pay for something, it's not mine, and I've got to own your work here.
Give me the girl.
Nina? For services rendered? Free and clear, no further obligations to you.
And put out the word that nothing else is ever to happen to her again.
Everybody wants Nina.
Why not? She's yours.
I can always get another Nina for less than $10,000.
Just out of curiosity, what are you going to do with her? I'm gonna take her back to St.
Paul, Minnesota.
Walt: So you're telling me you didn't cut any deals with Donnegal not to talk? That's right.
- You're afraid of him.
- I'm not afraid of him.
Well you should be.
Because he is a very dangerous guy, John.
Not the kind of guy you want to make friends with, 'cause his friends either wind up dead, or lying in a hospital bed.
And right now you are giving me squat.
Look, I told you what I know.
You swear on JJ's life that you're not lying to me? Go to hell, Walt.
Hey, Sonny - I know it was you.
- Are you crazy? You had the most to lose if the cops found out Nina was the go-between and tied you to the money.
I wish I could tell Bannerman and bring you down, - but I can't do that to her.
- I don't I know it.
I can't prove it but I know it, Sonny.
And I'm coming for you.
I'm coming for you, Sonny.
Mickey? I'm here, Nina.
I'm here.
(theme music playing) - No no! - Yes yes! You're grounded!
