The Dresden Files s01e09 Episode Script

The Other Dick

Some things come a lot easier to other people than they do to me.
For example, money; spending it has never been a problem, but figuring out a way to make it, well, that's always been a mystery.
Thirty seconds.
Someone at City Hall decided to stay on a police consultant I needed a PI license, which meant hitting the books.
But at the moment keeping Ilsa, she wolf of the SS, and throwing me out on my ass - well that was taking up all my time.
Okay that's it.
Time's up.
Pencils down.
All right, now we've covered morals and ethics, your responsibilities to the law and your dealing with clients, etc.
Now before we break I've got one final question to ask and whoever answers it passes, regardless of their score.
You ready? What is the Sacred Rule? Come on, anybody.
Harvey? Harvey.
Yeah, the Sacred Rule Oh, keep your mouth shut.
Harvey is right! Harry is right.
Harry, who the hell is Harry? Nevermind.
Go on.
Right.
Keep your mouth shut! After 40 years of meeting hundreds of skeletons in hundreds of closets, I've learned to place one rule I hold sacred above all else.
Put it on a pedestal and worship it.
Confidentiality! What happens between and your client is an eternal secret.
You don't blab.
You don't run to the cops.
You don't go and write a tell-all book.
You keep it to yourself and you do the job and try to bring some peace if you can.
All right, leave your exams on the desk.
Break time.
Harvey gets an A.
Nice.
Mr.
Dresden? Oh.
It's about your tuition.
Okay, well Your last two promises of payment have come and gone.
You're going to have to leave the class.
I just got an A.
Not in accounting.
Miss Fontaine, I can't make money unless I get the permit that this class provides.
That's not my problem.
You're kicking me out? Yeah.
Your most promising student? Promises don't pay the rent.
Well, it's $500.
That I don't have.
Can't you put in a requisition? There's no money here Harry.
The tap's turned off until you get legit.
Okay, what about a loan? Like I have $500 just lying around.
Look, $250? I just need to make a good faith payment.
You know Brennan likes me, I'm an A student; it's going really well Murphy.
Come on, please.
All right, go ask Brennan if $250 will get you back in class.
If it does, I'll see what I can do.
But the rest you're going to have to come up with yourself.
The thing about Brennan's class is even though I was being forced to take it, I actually liked the old guy.
Mr.
Brennan? I mean he was terrible with names.
It's Harry Dresden.
Harvey.
But he was good at being good, and these days, that's a rare commodity.
Mr.
Brennan Mr Yeah Brennan, he was a dying breed.
Mr.
Brennan? What the hell did you do? Don't move! Oy! Don't move.
I swear to God, I will kill you.
If I had a dollar for every time I've tripped over a body, had a gun pulled on me and watched Murphy kick for clues, I'd have more than enough money to pay for Brennan's PI class.
But Brennan's teaching days were over.
Whatever secrets the private dick shared with his clients would, in a few short hours, be tucked away in his grave forever.
He was standing right over the body.
I'm sorry about Mr.
Brennan.
You will be.
She wants you arrested on suspicion of murder.
Yeah, I deduced that.
You know, almost being a graduate of Brennan's class and all.
Do you think it's murder? It's looking like a stroke.
He's been down at least 6 hours.
She says he had heart problems, high blood pressure, debt, plenty of stress.
So you're ruling out a disgruntled client or a vengeful cuckold.
I'm not ruling out anything.
Did you just say cuckold? So, what's Fontaine's story? She's got an alibi.
No, I mean what's her story, story? Three years ago she hired Brennan to find her missing kid, custody thing, then she started working for him.
Did she find the kid? Kid liked daddy's new mommy better.
What's wrong with the old mommy? Okay, Fontaine served me for embezzlement and fraud.
She's been straight for 5 years, clean and sober for 4, so she says.
Okay, if she pulled a gun on me, being a convicted felon, that'd be problem, right? Did she pull a gun on you? No, of course not.
Just want to get my gun felon rules straight, that's all.
So, stroke.
We'll see, in the meantime, how are your code breaking skills? I'm pretty good at Soduko.
Brennan was working on something the last few weeks.
Yeah? He kept his notes using some sort of cipher.
I want to make sure Brennan's death wasn't more than a blown gasket.
Have you asked his assistant about this? Fontaine didn't know he was working on anything and she doesn't have the key; she says she's never seen it before.
Well Brennan was all about confidentiality, so Okay, I'm going to take a look at this for free, no permit.
For free.
Here's a copy.
Now go.
Okay.
Call me if you crack it.
Can I show you something? Yeah.
Maybe I was a little hasty about Brennan's secrets going to the grave, because there was one secret I was keeping to myself for now.
Jim Brennan, Private Eye, was not killed last night.
Well, it's not a pher Harry, it's his only made up language.
Only he knows what it means, or knew, and without some kind of Rosetta stone I don't think- Okay, okay, how about some Rosetta chalk? Its chalk Brennan used to write on the blackboard in class last night.
It's a link that might turn that into English.
I can try.
Good for you.
Now remind me again why we are doing this? What do you mean? Well, once again - no client, no money, just a dead man with possible signs of other worldly demise.
Bring peace if you can.
That's what he said.
Brennan was a good guy.
Not good with names but he didn't treat me like I'd crawled out from underneath some rock.
There's something blasted his nervous system to pieces, something wanted him dead and they wanted him to die screaming.
And the comely assistant with the rap sheet, she doesn't factor into this at all? Well, yeah, she thinks I killed the guy; I'd like to correct that impression.
Mhm.
And how are her legs? Dishy.
I rest my case.
That is ready, so work up a good wizardly spit and have at it.
Yeah, okay, okay, here we go.
Bottoms up.
Cheers.
Okay, R.
Jones, Hardy Meats, Ah! Write it down, write it down, write it down.
R.
Jones, West Lafayette.
West Lafayette.
R.
Jones, to be exact, Ronald Jones, director of human resources for meat packing company.
Now, was Jones a client of Brennan's or the subject of an investigation? In other words, was Jones connected to Brennan's murder? Seemed I wasn't the only one looking to answer that question.
What are you doing here? Me, I was just Ronald Jones? Why are you here? I'm here because I don't think your boss died of all together natural causes, all right? I know he didn't.
How do you know that? Because he quit drinking Yeah, and And he kept that bottle of booze around as a reminder of the bad times.
So when he left that bottle on the desk open with the glass half filled, it was a signal.
That bottle was his way of telling me that something terrible was going to happen.
Of course the cops won't listen to that.
No, they won't.
So get out of here.
I'm looking for a killer.
Ms.
Fontaine.
What? Me too, okay? Now look I liked the guy, I really did, and I take it personally when people I like turn up dead, okay.
Why don't you give me a chance? I'm pretty good in a pinch.
I'm a good dick.
Bad dick, whatever you want.
Huh? Could be a dick.
Okay.
I'm sorry, who's dead? Who did you say? Jim Brennan.
He was a private detective, murdered.
Oh my god, that's terrible, I mean, that's terrible.
What has this got to do with me? Well Mr.
Jones we I got this.
Mr.
Jones, we have reason to believe that Mr.
Brennan was either involved in something concerning you or someone you know.
And who are you exactly? Are you with the police? No, no, no.
We're actually well, we're private investigators and we're just really taking care of one of our own.
Mr.
Jones, we have Mr.
Jones, is that your wife over there in that photograph? Yes, that's Felicity.
Okay, well if you're sure Mr.
Brennan didn't contact you, then we'll just Wait.
I know Mr.
Brennan.
Knew.
I hired him.
For what? To follow my wife.
This is very difficult to say and I would appreciate the utmost discretion on your part.
Absolutely.
My wife was going out a lot, spending a lot of time away from the house and I kind of I got suspicious.
You thought your wife was having an affair.
Yes, I did.
But, not any more.
I mean, I know it was all in my head.
Did Mr.
Brennan tell you where she was going? He did, and it saved my marriage, but if any of this got out; if Felicity found out what I did Where was she going? You know Mr.
Jones, I'd like to thank you for your time and just rest assured your secret is safe with us.
I'm tailing the wife, she's a knock out.
What's she doing with him? I don't know, he's a people pusher in a meat factory.
Okay, so you think Felicity is cheating on him? Oh, not only do I think she's cheating, I think she figured out Brennan was on to her and she got her side dish to whack my boss.
Hell, maybe she even did it herself with poison or something.
I see, so why do you think Brennan gave Jones the all clear? I don't believe he did.
I think that Brennan told Jones everything and he suspects that his bombshell bride killed the PI that he hired to tail her.
He's protecting the love of his life! Okay, okay, listen to me, listen to me.
You are making a lot of assumptions.
We have just started the case; you have to keep an open mind, you have to follow the road and see where it leads.
You know what Harvey, you can just get out of the car.
Hey, that's my car.
Yeah, well, I'm driving.
What? Or whatever.
Trust me on this.
It's a woman's intuition.
Okay, I'll make a deal with you.
If Felicity Jones isn't throwing her milk shake in the yard I'll be happy to move on to one of your brilliant ideas.
Fine.
Just one thing.
What? My name isn't Harvey.
It isn't? No.
What is it? You're the detective.
Felicity Jones, the bombshell wife of Ronald Jones.
Mr.
Jones had hired Brennan to see what Mr.
Jones was up to, but halfway through a cold, miserable day, I could tell you this.
The bombshell was turning out to be a bit of a dud.
Okay, another store.
Thank you sir.
Well, two hours and forty minutes, and 1 purchase of trashy lingerie.
Bet that made your day.
Ah, it's not my style.
Probably bought it for a lover.
There is no lover.
What makes you so sure? You can see it in her eyes.
She's happy, she's content.
She loves her husband.
And look at the house, it's a castle.
Do you think she'd mess that up? People lie, especially with their eyes.
Uh huh, well the trick is, not hating them for it.
What are you, some kind of Zen crack pot? Sometimes.
What style do you call that, Early American creepy? That's not a store.
Come on.
Hey, wait, hold on.
What's the matter? A Lay Line; a geographical conduit of supernatural energy.
I just tripped over one, but I wasn't about to tell her that.
Ah, nothing, I just got a little heartburn.
Felicity Jones had walked into a cluster of Lay Lines; clusters - those are never good.
You're right, she's not having an affair.
She's trying to get pregnant and that lemon sucking husband of hers is not wanting anyone to know that he's shooting blanks.
Yeah, so I guess it's a dead end then.
Move on? Where are yoing? Well, I'll just go my separate way.
Uh huh, in there, after her? - What? - Why? I just got a feeling okay.
Okay, want to let me in on it? - No.
- No.
Maybe you should go.
I'll finish this off.
That's fine.
It's a fertility clinic.
If you go in there alone you're gonna look even more freakish than you do right now.
You gonna tell them you want to get pregnant.
Come on.
Wait.
What's this? Brennan's camera, in case we want to get pictures.
That is good thinking.
How many times a week, on overage, have you been engaging in intercourse? Dr.
Overland, please.
That's a question.
Well practically every night; I mean, a lot.
We have sex all the time and we don't get pregnant.
I know this is a sensitive topic for some women Mrs.
Fairburn, but have you been to see a fertility specialist in the past? I have.
No results, obviously.
No.
Did this specialist offer an opinion as to why? He did actually.
My husband.
What? His sperm count; he's running a little low.
Not to worry Mr.
Fairburn, we deal with these problems all the time.
Yeah, well that's reassuring sir.
So, how would you like to proceed? Well what do you say honey, all the way? Okay, all the way hon.
Wonderful.
Mr.
Fairburn, we'll get your prior records sent over, but in the meantime let's get a current sample and see what's what.
Get cracking.
Out the door and to the left.
When I cross a Lay Line I can feel it in my bones and my bones were telling me the trouble I was looking for was dead ahead.
we have to start from the beginning.
Beginning? How do you know it's not working? These treatments aren't an exact science Felicity.
I understand that, but you said that everything was fine.
It was fine; now it's not.
If there's any imbalance whatsoever to your I'm sorry, are you lost? Yeah, I guess I am.
I came in here to make a deposit, and I must have taken a wrong turn.
You're a patient of Dr.
Overland's? Oh god, I hope so.
I'm new.
Hey, what goes on in here? Treatment.
You want the 4th door to your right.
Okay.
If you'll excuse me? Yeah.
Ladies.
Sorry about that.
Our aim at the Overland Clinic is to help every woman fulfill her dream of procreation and I take a personal interest in each and every case.
Hello again.
Hi.
Mission accomplished? You know I wasn't really feeling that motivated.
Well, we offer lots of assistance in that regard; magazines, DVDs.
It's okay, I'm actually really more of a sculpture kind of guy, just so maybe next time.
Shall we? - After you.
- Bye, bye.
Bye.
Thanks.
Thank you.
Well, he's a piece of work.
Who, Dr.
Overland? Dr.
Overly grabby.
Did you get pictures? Yeah, yeah, there you go.
Oh good.
Also got this Tea, I found it in the treatment room.
Tea! Good for you.
Look, I also saw Mrs.
Jones with some nurse lady.
She is definitely trying to get pregnant but I just don't think it's going too well.
Well, it's like you said, it's a dead end.
Maybe not.
Okay, I'm gonna get the tea checked out.
You go get the pictures developed and I'll see you back at my place, all right.
Your place? Yeah, yeah, I'm in the book.
Under Dresden, you'll find me.
All right.
Overland's fertility clinic was turning out to be a hot bed of suspicious activity.
If Brennan was killed for getting too close, Liz and I needed to be careful or this whole thing was going to blow up in our faces.
Well this isn't your garden variety ginseng.
It's got wolfbok, capezzi root and tears of morphius in it.
Yeah, and combined they do what? Opens the mind and the body, diminishes inhibition, diminishes memory.
Like a magical roofie? Oh it's more than that.
While it's wiping out your memory it is heightening your spiritual energies.
So Harry tell me more about this symbol you noticed above the table.
Round, herbaceous rings around it.
I took a picture.
That'll help.
Hello? Hey, hey, how did you get on? Well, I did some research on Dr.
Overland and his little den of iniquity.
Yeah, what did you find out? Let's talk about you first.
Your real name is Harry and you claim to be a wizard.
Yeah, guilty.
Got the pictures? What does that mean? You know, it means wizard.
Wizard at what, math, cooking? I mean we get all kinds of Kooks in PI class, but you're a first.
So I thought.
Those are the pictures, right? You're changing the subject.
I'm trying to.
Brennan had a lot of photos in this camera.
Okay, well, I only took a few so Obviously he took a lot more.
He found some way to hide his camera in the clinic.
There's dozens of pictures of that practitioner chick with Felicity and some sort of ritual shindig; incense and candles and how did you know we had to investigate that? I was just poking around.
Yeah, you're not a wizard at lying, are you? You think these people had something to do with Brennan's murder.
Are you like some sort of hocus pocus wizard; is that the idea? Yeah, that's the idea.
Okay, David Blaine, why don't you pull a rabbit out your-? Get down! Harry, are you okay, what was that? Oh, I'm all out of rabbits.
No, no, seriously, what was that? What did you do? Harry? What is that, a bomb? Yeah.
Someone wants us off the case.
Oh my god, who are you? Who is he? That is the tea expert.
Bob, Liz, Liz, Bob.
Pleasure.
Yeah, okay.
What are you? Exhausted.
Okay listen.
We are way past the whole spying on cheating wife thing, so with all due respect it is time for you to drop and case and just stay safe.
safe? There's no such thing as safe.
There's alive, and there's dead and anything in between is just dumb luck.
Now the last person on this earth who treated me like a decent, valuable human being has been murdered.
I'm going to find out who killed him; I'm going to find out who tried to kill me, and I'm going to do something about it.
Harry, may I speak to you for a moment please? Excuse us.
Okay listen, just hold on.
The symbol above the come here, the symbol above the woman What about it? Its an incubatic portal, it's a doorway for incubiles.
Sexual tormentors who prey upon women, seducing them, driving them mad with lust and desire; a deviant, unbridled cornucopia of carnal delight.
In a fertility clinic? Come on.
For an incubus, I can think of no better playground.
Think of it, desperate women yearning for fertile seed, reproductive organs, naked bu Whoa, whoa okay what Please, please, a little respect.
Just tell me, what did you find out about Overland? Oh, he had his license to practice medicine revoked by the State of California.
Do you know how bad you have to be for California to shut you down? And as for the other woman, Enya Pertaski- probably an alias- she's been there about two years.
Before that the clinic was just barely getting by.
Now the money is rolling in.
Dr.
Overland had a long list of clients like Felicity Jones willing to do almost anything to get pregnant.
He had a female assistant with a knack for brewing strange teas and an incubatic portal nailed to the ceiling of his clinic.
Not a good sign.
So, was Dr.
Overland an Incubus? The fox in the hen house? It was time to take a little late night snoop around the chicken coop.
- Hey? - What? Do you have a spare hockey stick for me? No.
Well, this'll have to do instead.
You can get in serious trouble carrying that thing.
Thanks mom.
Murphy didn't tell me he had a few problems with the law.
Murphy needs to mind her own business.
If we do run into Overland, you gotta let me do the talking, okay.
Why? Let's just say he has a way with women, all right.
Blind, drunk women, maybe.
That's Overland.
Oh, no, no, no, don't touch.
Listen, you might want to cover your eyes.
- Cover your eyes! - All right.
What was that? That was confirmation that whoever killed Brennan also killed Overland.
And that Overland isn't who I thought he was.
Whoa, whoa, what is that? There's something there.
What is that? There's a needle mark in his neck.
Do you know what killed him? The acupuncture needle.
Enya Pertaski.
It's like a nervous system overload.
It's an honorable way to go.
Let's go find her.
No, no, wait, wait.
What we do now is we call the cops, all right.
That's what Brennan would do.
Now you've got to play this right, especially you.
What exactly did Murphy tell you? So much for my night at the Opera.
You look nice.
Do you have a date? Why am I not arresting you for breaking and entering? Nothing's been broken.
There was posted hours.
yOU did the lock thing.
Should have seen him earlier when he did the hockey stick thing.
Got a fan club.
And you're here because? We had some questions for Dr.
Overland.
At ten o'clock at night.
We told Kirmani everything.
I doubt that.
Find out how Brennan died yet? Working on it.
But it's not a stroke, right? No.
Needle mark in the neck, by any chance? Fine, you're Nancy Drew, which Hardy are you? I'm sorry Murphy.
Just tell me about the spinal punctures.
Overland's got the same one; he died the same way.
You need to look for Enya Pertaski.
Enya Pertaski? Yeah, she works with him.
She's up to something.
Murphy, I think she's the killer.
You know, why don't you skip on back to La traviata and let us handle it from here.
You're gone.
She's your problem Dresden, you keep her off this and away from me.
Yeah.
You know, it is a free country.
Not if you're in jail, but then you know that already, don't you? Let's go Harry.
Go on Harry before she takes another yank at your leash.
Can you just be nice? No.
Go home so I know where to find you if I have any questions.
I'm just, you know Go! What the hell was that? Listen, the other thing, what happened with Murphy out there you can't talk to cops like that okay.
That's not good.
I want a beer.
You got a beer? What? I thought you I'm on the wagon.
I can still want a beer, just not going to drink it.
Okay, so what do you want me to do, just put it right next to you? Not unless you want me to drink it.
I do not want you to drink it.
I can get you a glass of water instead.
Sure.
Okay.
That's a better idea.
Why did this Enya woman kill Brennan and then Overland? What's the connection? I don't know.
Was she the bomb thrower? Possibly.
Maybe she figured out that Brennan was tailing Mrs.
Jones.
Enya and Mrs.
Jones having an affair, and Overland threatened to expose them? Does Mr.
Jones know that his wife, his gorgeous wife, is batting for the other team, with a murderous needle jabber? Do we need to warn Mr.
Jones? No, listen, the cops, they know everything all right.
We just gotta back off, take a deep breath.
Where's my water? It's coming right up.
Be right back.
Harry, it's bad.
Bob there is nothing wrong with Chicago tap water.
The bottled stuff is all marketing.
Not the water, the situation.
I believe Mrs.
Jones is being used as an incubator, literally.
Literally, what are you talking about? Literally what? An incubator for an incubus child.
Incubi are infertile, they can't have children.
Oh yes they can, with help.
And that is where Mrs.
Jones comes in.
Observe if you will, this middle picture.
You see the odd gray mist hovering in the air above Mrs.
Jones' abdomen, just below the incubatic portal? You mean this gray smudge.
Look at it, look at it.
What is that? That is a trapped spirit, captured on film, they ensnared at the precise moment it was traveling from this world to the other side.
Wow.
How can this happen? I think I have figured it out.
A single touch from an incubus, she would be completely under its sexual control.
The incubus father seduces Mrs.
Jones and with the help of Enya, at the clinic, implants a piece of his soul.
Now, the tea treatments - unlock Mrs.
Jones' spiritual pathways allowing the incubus spirit to feed off her very fertile life force, sustaining it until it can live on its own.
Like a parasite, or something.
Precisely, but here is the brilliant part.
What Brennan's camera captured was the moment right after extraction, but just before it passed through the portal to the other side where it would have been made coporial.
Wow, and the lady has no idea what's being done to her.
Enya is an expert acupuncturist, ergo her needles would have numbed Mrs.
Jones to the point of feeling absolutely nothing.
Just one question - Who's the father? I know Mr.
Brennan.
I hired him.
Jones, Jones said he hired Brennan, but he didn't.
Overland hired Brennan to investigate his own clinic and they both got killed for it.
Bob, I think Jones is the father.
Liz? It shouldn't take long, I promise.
It'll be just like last time.
The melding of the spirits and then within a month, I'll do the extraction.
Felicity.
You're ruining everything.
I was right.
You threw the bomb.
You killed Overland.
You killed my boss, you murdering bitch! Jones? Why don't we all just relax.
Calm down and I'll tell you how it's going to be, okay? Okay.
I need Enya to help me fulfill a dream, so I need you to confess to the killings.
Yes.
And to murder Harry Dresden.
whatever you want.
Let me guess You'd be right.
Whoa, whoa, Liz, Liz.
That caped piece of crap you're standing next to is what we call an incubus, okay.
He is messing with you and if it wasn't for him Brennan would still be here today.
Liz, you know what I want, go on, make me happy.
Okay, okay, listen to me.
We'll make a deal.
You let her go and I'll give you what you want.
Yeah.
Your child, it's been here the whole time, trapped in a photograph.
He's here, a little piece of your soul.
Bring it to me.
If you let her go, and you let Felicity go, you can take this and you can go through that gate and you can just live happily ever after someplace else, all right.
Or what? Or junior burns.
I'll take a deal on my terms.
This is not a negotiation.
No! Liz, are you okay? I don't think I understand what happened here.
Do I want to? No, just that, you know, you found the bad guy and you cracked the case.
I did? You did.
I did.
What do we do with Enya? What are we gonna tell the police? What are we going to tell cops? Okay Enya and Jones they were running a bizarre fertility scheme out of Overland's clinic.
Overland hired Brennan to look into it; Enya killed Brennan and Overland and you found Enya.
Okay.
And Jones Jones.
Skipped town.
Skipped town.
That'll work for me, okay.
Let's get you up out of here.
Excuse me? Does anybody know where my clothes are? Hey, you don't have to close down.
Why not pick up where Brennan left off? I don't think so.
Listen, you could be pretty good at this.
I'm a convicted felon.
I couldn't get the permits.
Yeah, well, you see I know people who can help you with that.
Now listen, Brennan left you something here.
It's a chance for happiness and you should take it.
You're gonna be fine, okay.
It's a pretty tough job if I can't use a gun.
Sure you can't spare one of those killer hockey sticks? Yeah, I'm positive.
Just feel free to steer a little business my way from time to time, okay, because you know, I'm always short of cash.
Standard referrals are 15%.
Ms.
Fontaine you get an 'A'.
