The Guilty (2013) s01e03 Episode Script

Episode 3

He was four when he went missing.
Yes, he'll be nine now.
I'm so sorry.
Someone got scared and tried to hide what happened.
They identified the blanket Callum was wrapped in.
It was in his drawer and someone came into the house and took it.
Is it Nina Hooper? You didn't go into the room? No.
Where were you for those four hours? With Teresa Morgan.
Please, I need to - It was me! I killed Callum Reid.
Why move the body? I wanted to give him back to his family.
Why not tell them where he was? Why did you come forward now? When he was found I knew it was time.
He was found three weeks ago.
You could have said something then.
Wait there.
I didn't want to hurt him.
I couldn't help myself.
I'm going to take Luke in this morning.
Pick up some of the work he's missed.
Can we talk first? You called it a crush.
You told me nothing happened and now you say you were leaving me.
That was never gonna happen.
Well if you stayed for Callum .
.
you're free now, aren't you? That's not fair.
I don't want you to stay with me out of pity.
Claire! Stop.
You and Luke you're my whole life.
You know that.
You and Anderton let this weirdo pass right under your nose? No.
It's unbelievable.
Don't come it with me, son.
You weren't there.
We looked at everyone.
We talked to everyone.
Only after you let every bugger who felt like it through the crime scene.
Ma'am.
You talked to him last time.
What did you think? He came across a bit squirrely but there was nothing there.
And he had an alibi.
He had met Callum.
He'd done a few jobs for the Reids about a month before.
That's one up on the other nutters we've had.
Did Claire hire him? He worked on a few of Daniel's sites.
Gave him his card when he set up as a handyman.
Daniel reckoned he was a good worker.
Wait.
He doesn't have an alibi.
Yes, he does.
Rose's employer said he got to work at 5:45 on Sunday morning.
Which only ruled him out when the last sighting was 5am.
Where was he Saturday night? At home.
Watching TV.
He lived on his own.
Course he did.
Who was the employer? He'd just started a regular maintenance contract at St Abigail's Care Home.
On Quays Road.
The one with the nuns.
They're sisters actually.
There's a difference.
OK, well, I want to speak to them.
I'll be back in an hour.
The creepy Catholic handyman didn't set off any alarm bells? Fuck off.
Jeb.
Jeb! Hey, sweetheart.
Are you OK? Missed you so much.
Here.
You can have some later.
After tea, yeah? Sorry I didn't call back.
Don't worry about it.
You've only been out of the country a couple of days.
Stupid of me to think you might want to come home, see your son.
I told you, I had to interview a suspect.
And that couldn't be during office hours.
Then you can use it as an excuse not to come home.
The bloke attacked me in the car park and confessed to murder.
What was I supposed to do? Attacked? What do you mean? Sh! He just gave me a fright, that was all.
Great.
We need you here and you're out there trying to get killed.
You shouldn't let him keep wearing those.
It's not helping.
I'll have a shower then I'll take him.
What? I'll have a shower and then I'll take him.
The educational psychologist is observing him today.
Wants to meet us after he does the assessment.
OK? OK.
Sister, Mr Rose has recently confessed to a serious crime.
We're trying to establish whether he could be telling the truth.
Thomas has a very strong faith.
I've never known him to lie.
Do you think he'd be capable of harming a child? No, I don't.
But he has his own particular cross to bear.
As we all do.
I'll come and fetch you if you've had enough.
Hey, Claire! How are you doing? We're OK.
We're doing OK.
We're going to go and see Luke's teacher.
I'm off into town later if you need something.
Erm thank you.
I think we're fine though, actually.
Oh, my goodness.
Is that Felix? Yes! He promised he'd be back for the wedding.
Oh, my God, Ruth.
I'm so sorry.
Your dress.
We were going to go shopping, weren't we? Don't be daft.
I'm really sorry, Ruth.
Don't worry about it.
Really.
But if you need anything just call me, OK? I will.
Sure.
Felix.
Goodness me.
I didn't have to break in.
I had a key from when I worked there.
Why didn't you return it after the job? I did.
I made a copy.
So then you waited till a night when there were dozens of people around? It was quiet by the time I got there.
If you had a key you could have gone any time.
Why that night? It wasn't planned.
So what happened after you let yourself into the house? I told you.
I went up to his room and I woke him up.
Didn't want to scare him.
Told him we were going for a drive.
There was a surprise.
But he started calling out.
I just wanted to keep him quiet.
So what? You put your hand over his mouth? You held him by the throat? What exactly did you do? I had my arm around him, holding him against me.
My other hand was over his mouth.
And my arm must have been pressing against his throat.
I didn't realise until OK, so, he's dead.
He's lying on the ground.
Why didn't you just get out of there? I couldn't leave him like that.
For his parents to find him.
So you carried him out into the street like that.
All the way to the allotment - no-one saw you? I wrapped him up.
In what? I got a blanket.
From the drawer.
A blue baby blanket.
And I wrapped him in it.
We found bags of cement but there's no obvious signs of a grave.
Would there be? He said he filled it in afterwards.
Yeah.
Of course.
It is perfect, though, isn't it? You wouldn't notice anybody digging.
Loads of sacks and crates around.
No-one watching.
Just a bunch of old blokes in sheds.
Maybe.
Maybe it's too perfect.
Mm.
Sorry, ma'am.
Teresa Morgan's back at the station.
I didn't know if you still wanted to talk to her.
Yeah, I do.
Call me if they find anything.
Daniel didn't want to say he'd been with me for Claire's sake.
So you lied in your statement.
No, I Yeah.
The conversation you had with Daniel in the car, after the party I know it's a long time ago but if you can cast your mind back.
Were you planning to go away together? Well, I was.
My marriage was a disaster.
Daniel was very sweet.
I guess I convinced myself that it could be something more.
He didn't feel the same? I don't know.
Maybe.
Maybe it was just a bit of excitement.
All the sneaking around and .
.
meeting up in deserted buildings.
I mean, if you're going to have an affair, choose an architect.
They've got keys to all sorts of places.
But I knew he'd never leave his kids.
I mean, Luke was still messed up over losing his mum.
There was no way Daniel would have broken up his family.
That night I drove him home and still sat there for half an hour.
Thinking he might change his mind.
And then I saw the light go out.
I knew he wasn't coming.
You didn't see him get into his car? No, I assumed he'd gone to bed.
So I drove away.
Reece wants an update when you're ready.
She confirmed Daniel's story, then? More or less.
The original statement - someone talked to Luke Reid, didn't they? Yeah, but only briefly.
Nina put him to bed, he had a vague memory of a nightmare.
His dad coming in - that was about it.
He was only six at the time so I think he was confused.
Disorientated.
Did he say what the nightmare was about? I don't think so.
Hi, it's Teresa.
I just wanted to tell you that I've spoken to the police.
I hope I haven't said anything that'll make things difficult.
Look um you call me when you can.
Be good to hear your voice.
Bye.
He's still vague on a lot of details.
Except the blanket.
Except the blanket.
It definitely wasn't released to anyone? No, sir.
How long can we keep him? Our next review's at 6am.
Shall we ask for an extension? I don't think so.
I'm going to talk to Luke Reid.
If someone did come in the house maybe THAT woke him.
OK.
But get the FLO to talk to the parents to minimise stress.
You're absolutely sure about letting Rose go? He came to us.
I don't think he's going anywhere.
You're wasting time.
I told them what I did.
What more do you need? Stop it, Mum! OK, Sam.
Do you want to come in? Looking at the triad of impairment, he's not ticking boxes in every area, not by any means.
But he IS ticking enough for it to mean we may have a problem.
Triad of impairment? I'm talking about the core autism behaviours.
OK, so what do we do next? Sam will need to be seen by a multi-disciplinary team.
That usually takes around six months.
You could see someone privately but local authorities won't always accept a non-NHS diagnosis.
If we went privately is there someone you could recommend? Want me to drop you back? I'm gonna pick up that timber.
I'll get a lift back with Stevo.
OK.
So I'll call this guy and um We'll talk tonight, yeah? Yeah.
See you later.
Mm.
Did Nina always put Callum to bed first? Yeah.
So I could have a story on my own.
My son always wants half a dozen.
So after Nina had gone, did you go straight to sleep? I don't know.
I think so.
It was late.
They were both exhausted.
But then you woke up during the night.
I had a bad dream.
Do you remember what it was about? Do you think something else could have woken you? Maybe someone walking about, maybe you heard Callum call out? I don't think so.
Dad came when I cried and then He stayed until I went back to sleep.
Earlier on, at the barbecue, you don't remember anyone trying to talk to you or Callum.
Maybe someone who wasn't supposed to be there? Thank you for talking to me, Luke.
You've been really helpful.
Want to go upstairs? We'll be done in a minute.
Well done.
So you're sure now they took Callum from the house? It's starting to seem more likely.
Someone has come forward.
We're still trying to establish if it's a hoax.
A confession? I can't say any more at the moment.
Does Luke still have bad dreams? Mm.
Not so often.
I can't really - He dreams he can't breathe.
Started about the same time as his asthma.
We took him to see a child psychologist when he was small and she thought it might be something to do with him blaming himself for his mum's death.
Or even resenting the new baby.
Of course, he couldn't just be afraid of having an asthma attack.
These people.
Hi.
Yeah, that's right.
He's been referred from the school.
Really? Right, I see.
OK, I'll have to call you back.
That's a lovely rose.
Madame Alfred Carriere.
I don't like to tame her too much.
Daniel said he used to help you with the shared garden.
He had a go.
Not really a natural, though.
No? He planted a few things when I was looking after my wife.
He was gutted when everything died.
It's the magnolia, you see.
Not many things'll grow near them.
I'm home! Mum.
Hiya, love.
What's all this? Your mum thought they might be helpful.
Where's Sam? Watching TV.
Sue's nephew has Aspergers.
I was telling her about Sam.
Why did you have to tell her? Well, I needed to talk to someone.
I'd just rung Jeb and he told me the news.
So you got straight on the phone to Sue.
He's my grandson, Maggie.
I had the right to be upset.
And Sue was lovely.
She said she - Just stop.
Just stop.
Not turning this into yet another drama with you as the star.
That's horrible.
Yeah.
You're not the only one struggling round here.
I'm going to see Sam.
You should go home.
Maggie.
Is she here to see you? I don't know what she wants.
You should go and talk to her.
Wait, wait.
Kiss me.
I can't, I can't, I can't, I can't.
I can't.
OK.
Let's go get those boards.
I'm mainly working for their in-house recruitment, you know Um head-hunting from their regional offices, that kind of thing.
Right.
How are you? Why are you here? Teresa, what is it you want? I just wanted to see you.
I've thought about you so much.
About when we're together.
I meant it.
That last night When I When I asked you to leave with me.
Yeah.
And while I was with you my son was dying.
Sorry.
Shouldn't have come.
Get out! I'm so sorry.
Get out of my house! I never meant to - Get out! Get out! He was inside the house.
I know.
And now the press have got hold of him.
We have a confession.
Rose knows details only the killer could know.
He has motive, means.
We're still looking at the Reids.
Daniel Reid in particular.
You said he lied cos he was having an affair.
There could be more to it.
It doesn't fit that he was planning to leave.
Do you have any direct evidence that implicates Daniel Reid and rules out Thomas Rose? Not at this stage.
Then we take it to the CPS.
We've got enough to charge him.
Hi.
They've gone to the Press room.
For Reece's statement.
Right.
Listen, can you track down all the properties with any links to Daniel Reid's company in 2008 and cross-reference them all with the original search logs? Yes, ma'am.
Should I do that now? Please.
I can only apologise again.
As I say, we had no reason to believe Rose would approach you but it must have been very distressing.
Are you sure it's him? He was able to give certain details which we don't think he would have known otherwise.
Like what? He described the blanket.
And he confirmed he'd taken it from the drawer in Callum's room.
As you know that wasn't something we'd released to the public.
It's over.
Thank you.
Hi, love.
His own little blue blanket.
It's just horrible.
They say it's confirmation he was taken from the house.
Hang on.
I asked you to stay away.
Please.
I just want to apologise.
I never meant to upset Mrs Reid.
I just wanted to pass on my condolences.
Yes, well, you need to go.
Hey, Luke.
I just saw on TV.
I'm really glad they got him.
Yeah.
How are you doing? Are you OK? Listen, I know I was a bit of a dick back then .
.
but you never told anyone, did you? I mean, we were just messing about.
None of it was real.
But I'm sorry, yeah? 'I'll show you something if you like but don't tell anyone.
It's a secret.
' Mike did say he'd like to see you too.
Sure you won't come? You go and spend some time together.
Have fun, yeah? Everybody ready? Everybody ready?! Well, let's go, then! Sam, hold on.
OK, what about smaller developments? Stuff they worked on previously that he might still have keys for.
Keep checking.
Hi.
No.
Come on.
Come and say hi to Mike.
Come on.
Come on.
Get on the boat.
Come on, Sam.
No.
Sam, don't be silly.
Sorry, Lenny.
What are you doing? Come on.
Mike's waiting for us.
Come on.
Leave me alone.
Sam.
Please, no, what are you doing? No! Stop it.
Sam, what are you doing? Stop it! Sam, stop it.
Where are you going? Sam, we're all ready to go.
No! No! Sam.
Ow! It's cos it was green.
Your boat.
I believe colours can be a trigger.
I keep telling myself he's still Sam.
It's not like anybody died.
You imagine who they're going to be, don't you? From when they're tiny.
And now Sorry.
You should get that looked at.
No, I'm fine.
Smells good.
We haven't got any Parmesan.
Don't worry, I'll pick some up tomorrow.
Thanks, sweetheart.
This is lovely.
Thank you.
I could do with a few more scars.
Hardened crime fighter.
How is he? Fine.
Went out like a light.
I was crap.
I had no idea what to do.
There's not much you can do.
Just got to wait it out.
We should have done something sooner.
We knew We knew he had tantrums but all kids do.
It wasn't just that.
Gonna get it sorted, OK? Once we know for sure there's lots we can do to help him.
I've been reading your mum's books.
So, I went through the properties like you asked.
And there wasn't really anything.
Just talk me through.
Reid Associates specialised in corporate architecture.
Daniel had two big jobs on at the time.
Both sites were searched and there was a barn conversion he had been consulting on.
They went over that too.
And they looked at previous jobs? They went back three years.
Nothing.
Right.
The only thing that I found was this.
Reid Associates bought a piece of land in early 2008.
They were knocked back twice for planning permission so the development didn't go ahead.
OK.
Good.
Does Daniel still own the land? No.
A water company bought it by compulsory purchase in 2009.
Right.
I mean, it wasn't on the search list and there's no mention of any buildings on the site.
But there could have been sheds or outhouses.
When in 2009? March.
But they gave them notice back in October.
One month before the body was moved.
DCI Brand.
I'm where I'm supposed to be.
I don't believe that.
Not much I can do about that.
I don't understand.
Is it about fame? To feel important, have people notice you? Why are you doing this? I'm not fit to be around people.
I'm a danger.
I need to be locked up.
But you didn't kill Callum.
You have a son, don't you? Dark hair, brown eyes.
What do you know about my son? I wanted to talk to you.
You've been following me? I've watched young boys.
I watch and I imagine and I try not to act.
You still think I shouldn't be here? I think we were wrong, I think he confessed cos he's scared of what he's capable of.
He couldn't have known about the blanket.
Perhaps he talked to someone who'd been in contact with the family.
You have no way of knowing that.
Reid owned a piece of land in 2008.
It was never searched and then, six months later, he found out it was going to be flooded.
We never knew why the body was moved.
If the land was going to be flooded that's a perfect reason to keep it where it was.
Callum was his son.
It wasn't just about hiding the body.
You've become fixated on the father.
I understand.
But the case against Rose is sound.
Listen to me, Maggie.
You have to stop.
Aside from anything else, if you make an accusation like that, it will end your career.
You have to let it go.
It's over.
When can we go? They haven't cut the cake yet.
Go say hi to Felix.
No, thanks.
This is meant to make Sam feel grounded, supported.
Oh! Whatever! Is it? No, it's good.
It's good.
Push! Push me.
DCI Brand.
Sorry.
When? When did this happen? Yeah, OK.
Yep.
Thanks.
What is it? Um Thomas Rose was stabbed in prison.
He er He died on the way to hospital.
They said he provoked the attack.
Apparently he spat in another inmate's face.
Basically killed himself.
Very late.
Claire's er in bed.
It's you I want to talk to.
Thomas Rose was killed this afternoon.
Which means the case is now officially closed.
I know.
Your detective superintendent called us.
Two men have died because of this investigation.
First Jason Byrne, now Thomas Rose.
That doesn't bother you? Course it does.
But if Rose murdered my son - I don't think he did.
What do you mean? I think we charged the wrong man.
Are you saying I'm a suspect again? After everything you've put my family through.
I'm saying the investigation is closed.
I can't prove Thomas Rose didn't kill your son.
Then it's over.
Is it? Whatever it is you think I've done .
.
you are wrong.
Dan.
Who is it you're trying to protect? You need to go.
You know it's never going to go away.
I said go.
Now.
Oh, I um I went up to the Queen's Reservoir.
Must have been a beautiful spot.
Once a child has lost one parent they live in constant fear of losing the other.
A new relationship, a new sibling .
.
these could all be seen as threats.
And you do need to deal with that.
Stop that! Callum! Was it OK? Being back at school.
Pretty boring.
What about the other kids? They were OK.
You don't have to talk about anything you don't want to.
I know.
Luke.
If there are things you want to talk about that's what I'm here for.
I never want you to worry about something Or blame yourself for something and feel you can't talk to me.
Whatever it is.
Anyway Let's get finished up.
Claire's invited Felix over for dinner.
What for? His mum's away.
He's on his own.
I thought you liked Felix.
No, I don't.
He's a fucking idiot.
Hey! What's he ever done to you? Hey.
Luke.
Talk to me.
If he's done something, if he's hurt you He hasn't.
He What? He He told us it was a game.
He said to get a bale of twine and he'd show us how to do something cool.
What are you talking about? What did he show you? Luke.
What did he show you? It was stupid.
He said if you wrapped something round your neck you'd go dizzy and feel like you were flying.
And when was this? At the barbecue.
Him and his mate.
Pretending he was dead.
Hanging from a tree.
It was horrible.
Why would anyone do that if they knew what it felt like? And you really can't breathe.
You wouldn't mess around like that.
And Callum saw this? Yeah.
He thought it was funny.
He said he wanted to try it but you know what he was like.
I made him come away.
I came to find you but I'm sorry.
Callum just thought it was a game.
He thought everything was a game.
Stop that! He told me to.
Do it again.
Daniel? Daniel.
Ah.
Oh, hello, love.
I'm sorry I'm late.
It's only pasta.
It'll only take me a few minutes.
I just want to show you these shoes.
Daniel? Oh, my darling.
What's wrong? I'm so sorry.
I just wanted to protect him.
I know.
I know.
He didn't do it, Claire.
He didn't hurt him.
I thought it was Luke.
I thought Luke killed Callum but He was his little brother.
He tried to keep him safe.
I lied.
Claire.
Can you get copies of this for me, please? And um Ma'am.
I had to make a choice.
We'd already lost Callum.
I thought if I could save Luke But I made a mistake.
Callum was just copying some .
.
stupid game.
Luke wasn't even there.
It was an accident.
Luke didn't do it.
He didn't do it.
