The Incredible Hulk (1978) s01e05 Episode Script

Of Guilt, Models, and Murder

Help me, please, somebody! Help me! (SCREAMING) (ROARING) Picked her up in his arms and crushed her.
Well, have you any experience as a valet? I'm afraid not.
The pay is good, and I think you'll find the fringe benefits most exciting.
(BEEPING) NARRATOR: Dr.
David Banner.
Physician.
Scientist.
Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have.
Then, an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry.
And now, when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.
The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter.
Mr.
McGee, don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
The creature is wanted for a murder he didn't commit.
David Banner is believed to be dead.
And he must let the world think that he is dead, until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.
(GROWLING) TERRl: Please, help me! Will somebody please help me? Help me, please, somebody! Can anybody hear me? Somebody, please help me! Please, help me! (BARKING) Help me, please, somebody! (BARKING) Help me! Help me! ELAINA: David Banner is not a killer.
Listen to me, David.
David Banner is not a killer.
We're not talking about David Banner.
ELAINA: Yes, we are! Now, it's the same thing as if someone is under hypnosis.
Unless they're a potential killer, you cannot hypnotize them and make them kill.
Now, this creature is an outgrowth of David Banner.
It's his primitive emotions run wild.
It may be undisciplined, it may tear the hell out of a pressure chamber, but it won't kill because David Banner won't kill.
(TIRES SCREECHING) WOMAN: (ON TV) The big news this morning is the murder of model Terri Ann Smith who for years was known as the Joslin Cosmetics girl.
Last night she was killed in the mansion of her boyfriend, cosmetic king James Joslin, by what was described to be a seven-foot giant.
More from John Parker, who's at the mansion with our mini-cam.
PARKER: James Joslin is coming into the room right now.
We understand first he'll make a statement, then answer questions.
A giant killed her.
Really creepy.
(HORN HONKING) Terri was very special to all of us at Joslin Cosmetics.
She was loved dearly.
I want to answer all your questions, I want to tell you everything I know about last night in the hope that it will alert the citizens in this city to the danger that this murdering beast presents.
We can't allow something this tragic to happen twice.
Your questions? Yes, Mr.
Joslin Mr.
Joslin, we share your concern about this creature.
Could you tell us exactly what happened last night? Terri and I had said goodnight to several friends and we were alone, upstairs in the den.
What time was this? (CAMERAS CLICKING) About 2:00 a.
m.
Some of your neighbors heard cries for helps that time.
Yes, well, we were pretty rowdy.
Terri Well, she used to joke that she could scream her head off and that no one in the neighborhood would pay any attention.
(BOTH CHATTERING) JOSLIN: Last night she decided to prove it.
Now of course they'd be here.
I'll show you.
They're watching us now.
No (SCREAMING) You mean to say that when she screamed, she really didn't need help? Not then.
It was like the boy who cried wolf.
She was just joking.
Please help me! Anyway, she was by the window, shouting, when we heard a howling outside.
Somebody help me! (DOGS HOWLING) TERRl: Help! JOSLIN: It was the dogs.
Can anybody hear me? (BARKING) They spotted an intruder and were going after him.
Please, help me! I went to the window.
(DOGS BARKING) (SNARLING) (WHINING) (GROWLING) Then he moved toward the front door but it was locked.
And it was solid two-inch oak.
He tore it to pieces.
(FOOTSTEPS APPROACHING) We heard him coming down the hall, growling.
(GROWLING) And then he came in.
He was massive, at least seven feet, and very, very angry.
(ROARING) (TERRI SCREAMING) He was incredibly strong.
He smashed a marble statue.
He looked around and saw Terri and started toward her.
This time her screams were for real.
Terri tried to hide behind a display case.
He crossed to it, looked at her through the glass and then reached up and smashed it to the ground.
The thing He picked Terri up in his arms, squeezed her, crushed her.
But I ran Would you excuse me? PARKER: James Joslin appears to be overcome with emotion and unable to go on.
Must have been horrible.
That poor man.
He crushed her.
Police Chief Jackson is now stepping up to the microphone.
The cause of death appears to be a broken back and possibly a crushed spinal cord.
The coroner will release his official You see that girl with Joslin? (JACKSON CHATTERING) Yeah.
She's pretty.
Have you ever seen her before? I mean, do you know that face? No.
Probably one of Joslin's models.
Probably seen her in a magazine.
JACKSON: We have no choice but to inform the public of the tremendous I don't think so.
In closing, I would like to assure the residents of this city and this county that the manhunt for this murdering creature will be the largest this force has ever launched.
But until he is caught, the safest place for you is in your home.
Now, stay off of the streets at night, please.
As long as this creature is running loose, everyone's life is in danger.
Thank you very much.
WOMAN: (ON TV) Thank you, John.
We'll keep Chief Jackson's warning in mind.
Elsewhere in the news today Hey, not exactly the greatest news to wake up to, huh? I heard Joslin's valet quit when he heard about it.
Joslin's supposed to be interviewing for a replacement today, but personally, I won't go near that place.
You on the road, too? Sort of, yes.
Ah.
Running from, or going to? A little of each.
One of those, huh? Six months of running from and all I got was blisters.
I'm gonna go back.
Where is back? Portland.
You headed North, too? Oh, sort of.
Look, maybe this is out of line, and I don't mean it as a come on, but I could really use someone to travel with.
I mean, a girl alone on the road's bad enough, and with this creature running around, I'm really scared.
JACKSON: As long as this creature is running loose, everyone's life is in danger.
GIRL: He crushed her.
I think you'd better go on alone.
Oh, well, then, suit yourself.
But you can't run around in circles forever.
Be safe.
Thank you.
Good luck.
Thank you.
DAVID: I have to turn myself in.
ELAINA: David Banner is not a killer.
JACKSON: everyone's life is in danger.
GIRL: She's probably one of Joslin's models.
JOSLIN: Terri and I were alone.
GIRL: He crushed her.
DAVID: I've got to turn myself in.
ELAINA: David Banner is not a killer.
Help me! Hey, somethin' wrong? ELAINA: David Banner is not a killer.
You need some help? No I thought I was lost.
GIRL: Joslin's supposed to be interviewing for a replacement today.
(CHUCKLING) Who's got the one with the onions? I do.
That figures.
I wonder when he's gonna come out? Well, he can't stay in there forever.
Well, he may.
Excuse me.
Mr.
Joslin is not seeing any reporters.
Oh, no, no.
I'm here to apply for the job of valet.
I'd read in the papers where they were conducting interviews.
Uh-huh.
You'll be met at the side door.
Thank you.
(PEOPLE CHATTERING) Excuse me.
Yes? I'm here to apply for the position of valet.
Well, have you any experience as a valet? DAVID: Yes, in Boston.
For whom? Dr.
Jonathan Southwell.
Never heard of him.
Would you object if we gave him a call? Unfortunately he's deceased.
Oh.
Well, then, have you any other references? I'm afraid not.
JOSLIN: Hire him.
Mr.
Joslin Hire him, Ellen.
Don't argue.
I'm James Joslin.
David Blaine.
I hire people on my gut reaction to them.
I think we'll get along fine.
Well, thank you.
I'm sure that we will.
Ellen, show Mr.
Blaine to Sanderson's room.
And see if you can find some clothes that will fit him.
He looks to be about the same size.
Why don't you shower and change? Be down here again in 30 minutes.
Yes, I will.
He's the one from last night.
I'm positive.
(PEOPLE CHATTERING) ELKIN: Something wrong with the fit? No.
As a matter of fact, it's perfect.
Except I have a bunch of matches in my pocket.
Sanderson's Salvage? Sanderson's cousin owns it.
Oh, who's he? Sanderson? The old valet.
Oh.
He wasn't with us very long, so the clothes are almost new.
As a matter of fact, he just left yesterday.
He must have been in a big hurry considering all the clothes he left behind.
I think there were at least Closer to 30.
Mr.
Joslin clothes all his personal staff.
It's one of the fringe benefits.
Listen, I realize it's not I realize it's not helping my credit.
I know that.
(JOSLIN SIGHING) Listen, I'll have it to you as soon as possible, but I need this loan.
All right.
Right.
I'll call you tomorrow.
Bankers.
I'm surprised they called today, considering last night.
The fact is I called them.
Business helps me to take my mind off it.
I hope you understand.
Of course.
Now, about your new job.
You'll have to be available on a 24-hour basis, and live at the mansion.
Sometimes the work will be menial, like answering the telephone, sometimes creative and demanding, like one of our advertising photo sessions.
But to all intents and purposes, David, you'll be my assistant.
The pay is good, and I think you'll find the fringe benefits most exciting.
Yes, Mr.
Elkin's told me.
Good.
(PHONE RINGING) The Joslin residence.
MAN: Is Mr.
Joslin there? May I ask who's calling? Tell him it's a former employee.
He's expecting my call.
It's a former employee.
He says you're expecting his call.
Oh, yes.
Excuse me, just one moment.
Would you like to get some coffee? Thank you.
Joslin here.
Oh, yes, of course, I know what that would do.
Yes, but just tell me how much you want me to pay, Sanderson.
(WHISPERING) Oh, my God.
Yes.
Yes, of course I'll pay.
(SIGHING) A little problem with back payments.
Nothing serious.
Well, as a new employee, I certainly hope not.
We're shooting some test layouts on our new line in cosmetics today.
Would you like to watch? Very much.
(CAMERA CLICKING) PHOTOGRAPHER: Two, three, four, five.
One, two, three, four, five, six.
Double, kick, recoil.
Okay, change.
That's good.
Okay, over there we go.
Again, one more time.
That's good.
Change.
Change.
That's good.
Okay, a little lower.
Okay, right to me.
Right to me.
That's it.
That's it.
Drop the arm.
Okay, hold it.
Hold it.
Hold it.
You're fine.
That's good.
That's good.
Stunning, isn't she? Keep going.
Change, change.
She's very pretty.
Hold it.
Okay, change.
Change.
That's good.
Hold it.
Hold it.
Good.
That's it.
Change.
Good.
Now, look at me.
Okay, that's good.
Change.
I plan to base our entire new line on her.
Her face is literally going to mean Joslin Cosmetics.
Okay.
Okay, that's good.
That's good.
All right.
Okay.
That's it, hold it.
Hold it.
Good, good, okay.
All right, change.
Okay, and over to me.
That's it.
What's her name? Sheila Cantrell.
I'd like you to meet her.
PHOTOGRAPHER: To me.
Okay.
Right above me now.
That's it.
Drop the arm.
Drop the arm.
Okay.
All right.
Hold it.
Great.
Thanks a lot.
Good.
I think they're through.
(ALL CHATTERING) Sheila, this is David Blaine.
David, Sheila Cantrell.
Hello.
Nice posing.
Thanks.
Nice looking.
Difficult not to.
I've asked Sheila to show you over the place.
She lives here and knows it pretty well.
I'll be up at the house making calls.
If I need you, I'll send Elkin down, all right? Fine.
Thank you.
He was a different man this morning on television.
He barely seems affected now.
SHEILA: By the murder? Well, by the shooting session, and job interviews, business calls.
It's almost as if nothing had happened.
I know.
It makes you nervous? He's a strange man, David.
Watch out for him.
He can be extremely vicious.
Come on.
I'll buy you a soda.
JOSLIN: Elkin, join me on the patio with your gun.
The one with the silencer.
Terri used to love it back here.
Ah.
Did you know her well? Oh, she was my den mother, my sister and advisor, all rolled into one.
Mmm-hmm.
The voice of experience.
Terri had been through everything I'm going through now.
Modeling contracts, the advertising people.
She was the Joslin girl for five years.
Yes, I know.
Look where it got her.
Were you here last night? No I'd rather not talk about it.
The thought of that monster crushing her Oh, those white eyes.
No one mentioned any white eyes.
What? White eyes.
No one said anything about them.
Joslin described the creature as being big and green, but there was no mention of white eyes.
I guess he did to me.
Well, what would you like? We have cola, ginger ale, all kinds of fruit juice.
Oh, no, nothing for me, thank you.
Gone again.
Do you have a light? I think so.
Yeah.
But if you're concerned about your health I know, I know.
Quit smoking.
I don't know.
Maybe you're right.
Well, good for you.
I saw you in the window last night.
You were there? Long enough to see you.
I want to know why you didn't tell the police? What are you trying to hide? Nothing.
Just drop it.
Sheila, I have to know what happened.
I can't.
Did the creature really do it? I can't.
He'll kill me.
Who? Joslin.
Sheila, if you don't go to the police, I will.
Now tell me, did Joslin kill Terri? Did Joslin do it? Tell me! Yes.
Thank God.
I was upstairs in my room when I heard them fighting.
Terri and Joslin? I went down to see if there was anything I could do, but they were into it too far.
SHEILA: James was furious, screaming that she was blackmailing him into marriage.
DAVID: Was she? Yes.
I don't love you.
Can't you understand that? I love you.
I love you! You don't pitch good! Take your She'd been wanting James to marry her for years, but he'd always backed out.
She wasn't going to let that happen again.
I love you! You don't pitch good! Terri told him that she knew he'd been embezzling money from the company, using it to pay off old debts.
(SCREAMS) And if he didn't marry her, she was going to go to the police.
I am going to the police.
(SCREAMING) Help! James couldn't convince her to back down.
He started towards her and then she screamed.
I wanted to help her, but my legs wouldn't move.
I just watched.
Help! Watched as he picked up one of those metal statues and hit her.
He hit her in the back with it.
Killed her.
What about the creature? I don't know where he came from.
We heard the dogs howling and then there was this enormous crash.
(DOGS HOWLING) (HULK GROWLING) SHEILA: We heard him come up the stairs and down the hallway.
Big, heavy steps.
And then there was this roar.
(ROARING) The creature came into the room like an angry animal.
He was furious at something.
It was James.
He started toward him, knocking over anything in his path.
James tried to hide behind the display case, but the creature just smashed it to the ground.
(SNARLING) James ran out past Sanderson and me.
He must have come down during the fight.
(GROWLING) We turned as the creature roared.
(DOGS HOWLING) And then, the strangest thing happened.
He walked over to Terri, kneeled, and picked her up, tenderly.
As if he really cared about her.
It was Well, in a strange way, it was touching.
The creature actually seemed to be crying over her death.
(WAILING) I watched him for a while and then I ran.
Leaving Sanderson behind.
I'm not sure how much he saw.
Enough to blackmail Joslin.
Then he was the man that I chased out of the mansion.
You were inside? Hmm.
Who was in the sports car? Elkin.
James didn't want his new Joslin girl involved in any investigation, so he told me to tell everyone that I was the one driving the car.
He also told you not to go to the police.
Yes.
Are you going to now? David, my whole career depends on James.
Anyway, who'd believe me? Well, with Sanderson backing you up, everybody.
We don't even know where he is.
I think I do.
(SHEILA SHRIEKS) (GIRLS CHATTERING) (SHUSHING) All right.
I don't think they followed us.
Now, do you still think that Joslin's trying to protect you? Then the only answer is to go to the police.
Not without Sanderson, David.
I won't go alone.
You say you know where he is? Yeah.
I think so.
SHEILA: Salvage Yard? DAVID: Mmm-hmm.
Do you think he'll go with us? With a little persuasion, I do, yes.
Is it all right if you go alone? Well, you can't stay here.
I have a girlfriend with an apartment near here.
You could drop me off.
All right.
But first we have to get a car.
Show me the way out of here.
This way.
(BOTH CHATTERING) put the gate up, we'll get in and see him and get out of here.
MAN: Last one for today, Joe.
Crunch it, then knock it off.
(MACHINERY HUMMING) (CLICKING) MAN: Let's go down to Jackie's and shoot some pool.
Hello? Anybody here? Hello? MAN: We're closed.
There's something I have to talk to Mr.
Sanderson about.
Could you open the door? Yeah.
Well, Sandy's not here.
I'm not talking about Sandy.
I'm talking about a valet who's blackmailing his boss, and whose name I'm going to give to the police unless he opens this door.
Who are you? My name is David Blaine.
I want to talk to you.
You don't need the gun.
Okay.
It's a nice jacket.
Used to have one just like it when I worked for Joslin.
If you think he sent me here, you're wrong.
I'm here to ask you to go to the police.
For what? To tell them you saw Joslin kill Terri Smith.
That it wasn't the creature.
I'm afraid you don't know what you're talking about.
You were standing in the doorway with Sheila Cantrell when he did it.
That's what Sheila told me, and that's what she's going to tell the police.
She's going to the police? Mmm-hmm.
And the only way you can avoid blackmail charges is to go with her.
Wait a minute.
She told you that she was going to the police and you believed her? Yes.
You're out of your mind.
SHEILA: I'm afraid he's right, David.
Because James didn't kill Terri.
I did.
Don't look at me like that, David.
Terri deserved it.
She was the one who was going to blackmail him.
She was getting old.
It was time for her to leave, to get out of his life.
James was mine.
She knew that.
And the only way she could hang onto him was to force him into marrying her.
No way.
I'm not leaving.
I am the Joslin girl.
And she was gonna rub my face in it.
Well, I wasn't about to let her do that.
I'd worked too hard to get there.
So I threatened her.
SHEILA: The karate and the photography session wasn't a put on.
I'm a black belt, Terri knew it.
But she wasn't afraid, she forced me to show her.
And if that's not enough, how about this? But she wouldn't listen.
I showed her what I could do, but she wouldn't back down.
Instead, she screamed for help.
Help! Help, somebody! Help! I had to stop her.
So you killed her.
Yes.
Actually, we were pretty lucky.
I don't know where that creature came from, but he acted as the perfect scapegoat.
And where were you? In the sports car that nearly ran you down.
That's how I was able to pick you for my valet.
I knew you were there that night, and had to be silenced.
So why'd you protect her? Because she's a Joslin girl? Because I love her.
In you go.
(GRUNTING) JOSLIN: All right, Elkin.
This is 2-Baker-7.
MAN: (ON RADIO) Go ahead.
Yeah.
I've located the reporter's stolen car.
Yeah.
On the corner of Solvang, near Sanderson's junk yard.
Yeah.
Why don't you run him out here for an ID? (GRUNTING) (HUMMING) (SNARLING) (GROWLS) (ROARS) Yeah.
Everything looks okay.
The only thing that's missing is my tape recorder.
(GROWLING) SHEILA: Oh, my God, it's him! Shoot him! Shoot him! (GUN FIRING) Get in there! (SIRENS BLARING) (SCREAMING) (POLICE SIREN WAILING) OFFICER: Are you all right? JOSLIN: Thank God, you're here.
That creature was going to kill us.
OFFICER: Where did he go? JOSLIN: He disappeared into the yard.
He's gone.
(HORN HONKING) (GROANING) (TAPE REWINDING) SHEILA: (ON TAPE) I'm afraid he's right, David.
Because James didn't kill Terri.
I did.
She was the one who was going to blackmail him.
She was getting old.
It was time for her to leave, to get out of his life.
She PARKER: Jack, the police told us that something you recorded on your tape machine played a key role in the arrest of James Joslin and Sheila Cantrell.
Can you tell us what it was? Yeah.
Well, essentially, it was a recording of a full confession.
PARKER: How did you get it? Well, that's a trade secret, John.
But I suspected Miss Cantrell for some time, and I felt that if I kept after her, she'd start to crack.
Well, what about the creature? McGEE: Well, the creature may be clear of this murder, but he's still a threat to society.
I'll be here trying to track him down.
I only hope that the local police can say the same.
Thank you, Jack.
To recap, the latest development in the Terri Ann Smith murder is the startling arrest of Sheila Cantrell, the new Joslin Cosmetics girl
