The Incredible Hulk (1978) s02e18 Episode Script

The Disciple

(ROARING) If he goes any deeper into shock, he's gonna die.
You must take your mind away from the pain.
(BEEPING) (FLATLINING) You can't change what you are! You're a Roark! And you're a cop! LI SUNG: I have my successor.
I'm not your successor.
COLIN: You're too late.
SWAT team's on its way.
He needs medicaI treatment.
NARRATOR: Dr.
David Banner, physician, scientist.
Searching for a way to tap into the hidden strengths that all humans have.
Then, an accidental overdose of gamma radiation alters his body chemistry.
And now, when David Banner grows angry or outraged, a startling metamorphosis occurs.
(ROARS) The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter.
Mr.
McGee, don't make me angry.
You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.
The creature is wanted for a murder he didn't commit.
David Banner is believed to be dead.
And he must let the world think that he is dead until he can find a way to control the raging spirit that dwells within him.
(ROARS) (WHISTLING) WOMAN ON POLICE RADIO: Meet the supervisor, Putino, Memorial Park.
MICHAEL: That's a roger, dispatcher.
Eleven north six en route.
(WOMAN SPEAKING CHINESE) MichaeI.
See MichaeI.
Okay? Yeah, I called him.
He's on his way.
Now, why don't you try telling me what you're gonna tell him, huh? Come on, speak your scam to me.
MichaeI, okay? Only speak to MichaeI! (SPEAKING CHINESE) Mike, honey.
Am I glad to see you.
Well, this three-striper's been driving me zippo.
Yeah, well, Jo, this three-striper's my father, Sergeant Tim Roark.
That's what it says here, you see? "Roark"? I only speak English.
I don't read it.
And this is my brother, Colin.
What'd you want to see me about, Jo? Well, I thought maybe you'd like Joe Lynch, huh? Joe Lynch? You're nuts.
The whole department's been trying to smoke him out for the last week.
Joseph James Lynch.
Male, Caucasian, six foot, 180.
Tattoo of blue rose on right forearm.
Is that the man the whole department's been looking for, or not? Where is he, Jo? Well, according to my wire, he's in an apartment down the street, 128 Redfern.
Right at the edge of Chinatown.
I happen to know the lady he's with.
Jo Lee.
Thanks.
I owe you.
Yeah.
You know, Mike, your daddy's kind of cute.
Maybe next time I pass on whatever I got right to him.
Do you call that a snitch? What would your mother say if she saw a thing like that? Pop, you know, a wire's a wire.
I don't know! Where's he find types like this? Little brother here has got more contacts than a fuse box.
I'll call for backup.
Oh forget about calling in the troops.
But Pop! Just you, me and Colin to cover the whole building? Well listen to you, will you! If your grandfather, Captain Sean Roark, could hear you talk, God rest his souI, he'd turn over in his grave.
Since when can't three Roarks take on one sewer rat, huh? Come on.
Let's do it.
Attitude is the answer.
Reality is whatever you wish to make your existence.
My bones can resist and break, or they can bend and absorb the shock.
My flesh can tear or remain undamaged.
Become one with your world.
FearfuI resistance is the first step to defeat.
LI SUNG: Yes, I'm blind.
A physical disorder that fortunately has little to do with true seeing.
Well you seem to manage very well.
The force you possess.
I did see it, in my own way.
DAVID: I've tried to control it many times.
Using your technology? Yes.
Perhaps you should try mine.
Perhaps I should.
With continued training any one of you can do the same.
A simple power trick.
Much more than that, I'd say.
David! Welcome back.
It's good to have you back.
It's good to be here, Li Sung.
MICHAEL: Well, what about a search warrant? TIM: Forget It.
on the left.
Dad, shouldn't we just keep the place covered? Colin's covering the alley.
I'll move in first.
You use some of that fancy stuff you learned and kick the door for me.
Dad, listen to me.
Are you ready? (SIGHS) What're you doing? Go ahead.
LYNCH: Who is it? Pizza delivery! He's coming your way, Colin! Dad, wait! Dad! (WOMAN SOBBING) MichaeI.
Lynch.
Don't let him get away, Mike.
Go on.
Mike? Mike! Don't just stand there, damn it, get me some help! Call an ambulance in here! Okay, Pop, just hang on.
Hang on, Pop.
We got help coming on the way.
You stay with me, Pop, all right? You just stay where you are.
Just stay with me, Pop.
(GUN FIRING) (GROANING) (GUN CLICKS) So many nights I wondered how you were, where you were.
And then, after so much time, to receive your phone call.
Do you believe such things are a part of our destiny, David? Perhaps.
I do know that nothing that I've tried has succeeded in helping me controI my problem.
I came closer with your teachings than ever before.
Then we must begin your training at once.
Tonight.
Is something wrong, Li Sung? Time is our greatest ally, and our worst enemy.
It's all right, though.
I'm safe for now.
McGee has come and gone.
(MAN COUGHING DISTANTLY) Li Sung? What? What is it? (WHEEZING) Li Sung.
All right, get some towels.
Somebody call an ambulance.
Right away.
Can you hear me, MichaeI? He has an abdominaI wound.
He's losing an awfuI lot of blood.
We have to stop it right away.
Come on.
Okay He's into shock, too.
All right.
You want to grab one of his feet? Raise it up.
Right there.
Now, keep them elevated.
Just like that.
His blood pressure is very weak.
If he goes any deeper into shock, he's gonna die.
MichaeI, listen to me.
Please! Concentrate! Remember what you have learned since you have come here.
You must no longer reject.
Open yourself to the truth.
MichaeI! The blood pressure's still dropping.
Dad Explosion Lynch did it.
God MichaeI! Stop! Use the force of Ku-Kan.
Let your mind take over.
Leave the pain behind you.
Now! The heart is a machine.
ControI its function.
Master your body and live.
Pulse is getting stronger.
You're winning, MichaeI.
You're winning! Oh, my God.
The bleeding, it's It's stopping.
DOCTOR: Leave it to Lynch to get himself shot up.
MAN: Just do what you've been paid for, Doc.
MALE REPORTER: The search continues today for the killer of a San Francisco police officer, Sergeant Timothy Andrew Roark.
The department has initiated a city-wide manhunt in an attempt to locate this man, Joseph Lynch.
Lynch, reported to be a highly paid executioner in the ranks of organized crime, is wanted in connection with the bombing murders of three men in addition to that of Sergeant Roark.
(EKG BEEPING) LI SUNG: Understanding will come with training.
A further exercising of your soul's Ku-Kan, the backbone of our body's defenses.
(BEEPING SLOWER) (FLATLINING) (BEEPING) (EKG SLOWING DOWN) (FLATLINING) (BEEPING) LI SUNG: When you return to the school, Michael, you will see that I am right.
Where before you failed, you will now learn quickly and easily.
I don't want any.
Hey, you gotta eat something, Joe.
I told you I don't want any! Go.
Mike.
Colin.
It's good to see you.
Yeah.
(CLEARING THROAT) So what are you doing? You just sitting out here in the dark? That what you do in this joint? Sometimes.
How's Mom? Mom's fine.
(SIREN WAILING) (SIGHING) So when you coming back to work, huh? The doctors cleared you for duty, didn't they? Yeah.
I got some time off coming.
I'm gonna tack it onto the end of my sick leave.
Why, kid? We could be out chasing down Joe Lynch right now.
My sources tell me he's still in town.
Mine, too.
I heard him scream when I shot.
I need more time to think, Colin.
What's there to think about? What the hell's going on here, Mike? What is all this mumbo jumbo anyway? Leave it alone, Colin.
I don't want to fight with you, so quit trying to bait me.
All right.
This is my life I'm dealing with, not yours! All right! There's detective shields in this for us, you know.
It's officiaI.
You and me, detectives.
For what? For letting Dad walk into a trap? For not doing what we knew was right and stopping him? All right, all right.
Now, what about the guy who did it, huh? What are you gonna do? You just gonna sit out here with the flowers and forget about him? I'm not forgetting anything.
Come on, Mike, get up.
You go home with me right now, we'll forget all about this Charlie Chan stuff and you can help me find Joe Lynch.
I can't! Not right away.
I've got to work it out for myself.
(SIGHING) MAN 1: Congratulations, MichaeI! MAN 2: Great! MAN 3: Nice going! Terrific! MAN 4: That was great.
(CONGRATULATIONS CONTINUE) (EXCLAIMING) Karate force, as Richard has so aptly demonstrated, is composed of impact strength plus concentration.
The force of Ku-Kan, the power in each of us to command body and mind, is pure concentration.
Ku-Kan is a spirituaI energy which we can focus in an absolute, controlled manner to accomplish our goals.
MichaeI? (CREAKING) DAVID: I'll never be able to gain control.
I can't forget that impact plus flesh and bone equals pain.
LI SUNG: Forget logic, David! We'll keep working on it.
You and I, tonight.
LI SUNG: Ready? Yes.
Good.
Wash your brain.
When you feeI the circle connection, let your mind fly away.
Trust the force of Ku-Kan to accomplish what you want.
(GROANING) Li Sung? Li Sung! Li Sung! Help! Somebody! MichaeI! Somebody help! (GROANING) (GROANING) LI SUNG: David.
David? MAN: I heard it, too! It's coming from the gym! Let's go! MichaeI.
Go after David.
Please! (WEAKLY) Please Take care of him.
MAN: Li Sung.
(ROARING) What is that? Let's get out of here! (PEOPLE SCREAMING) Oh, great! WonderfuI! I love it! You'll be a sensation! Oh, what a crowd pleaser.
How much do you want, big fella? What's your price? Hey, wait.
You want a percentage, huh? Wait.
Just name it.
Name it! (ROARING) (ROARING) Oh, don't get angry.
I just asked.
(ROARING) (ROARING) I thought I'd seen just about everything.
But last night What are you gonna do now, David? I think I should leave.
Now that the Hulk has been seen, my time's gonna be running out pretty soon.
Your demon's appearance would not have happened if I had not felt ill.
It isn't just a matter of your feeling ill.
You collapsed, Li Sung.
He should be receiving treatment in a hospitaI.
There is no need.
My body can pass away when it chooses now.
I have held it off for so long.
But now I have my successor.
Li Sung, we've talked about this before.
Many times.
And I've told you many times how I feeI.
I'm not your successor.
Not now, not ever.
You can't change what you are, MichaeI.
What I am is a cop.
DAVID: You're sure, MichaeI? The clot seems to have gone down a little.
Not much.
When can I move? You can walk around, slowly, easily.
That's not what I'm talking about.
When can I get out of here? You should be in a hospitaI.
HospitaI? You know I can't go to a hospitaI! And I can't stay in this lousy dump any longer! You hear me? Any sudden movement, any at all, could cause another rupture of that liver, break that clot loose, and then you're a dead man.
Get out of here.
Get him out of here! Creep! Get out of here! My master, Tak An, was dying.
We asked him for a death poem.
He refused.
But when we insisted, he wrote the character "Yume.
" "Dream.
" Then he threw back his head and laughed.
And then he died.
(CHUCKLING) None of us understood.
But you understand now? I understand that life is a dream, and that dreaming is human.
I am as ignorant as ever, and wiser than I've ever been.
A foolish man dreaming of a son.
MichaeI will be back, Li Sung.
Perhaps.
Perhaps not.
COLIN: She'll just sit there for a while, then go back inside.
She does that a lot.
Says the old car reminds her of Pop's cigars.
Old woman in that old car I'm glad you came back, Mike.
I just pray we're the ones who corner Lynch.
Colin.
It isn't Lynch who's to blame for Dad's death.
What are you saying? We put a crazy rat in a corner and he fought back.
We didn't give him a chance to surrender.
What is that, some kind of crazy philosophy you picked up at that Chinese schooI of yours? That cornered rat killed our father! Will killing him change anything? Will it help Mom? It'll help me! I want to see him wasted the way he wasted Pop! I want to see him begging before I blow him away! You're wrong, Colin! All my life I've listened to the same thing from you and from Dad.
It doesn't have to be that way! I know that now.
I won't let you turn into something as bad as Lynch.
And just what the hell are you gonna do to stop me? Are you gonna pray for me in that so-called temple of yours? You gonna light a little Chinese candle for me? Whatever I do, Colin, it won't be your way.
You just go ahead, Mike.
You go on and try to go against your blood.
You can't change what you are! You're a Roark, damn it! And you're a cop! You hear me, Mike? You're a cop! Li Sung, what are you doing out here? You shouldn't be out in the cold.
I have never seen this garden.
But I'm told it's beautifuI.
You should be in your room.
You know that.
I wanted air to breathe.
I wanted my Zen Garden.
Zen, Hinduism, Islam, Christianity.
My friends have always said I was incurably eclectic.
It is the one thing that MichaeI always understood about my teachings.
Like me, he, too, sees the many sides of each issue.
He will need your help, David.
My strength is nearly gone.
I'll do everything I can, Li Sung.
(SIREN BLARING) Let me see some identification.
MichaeI! Hey, MichaeI.
I mean, man, you should know better than that.
I mean, speeding? I wasn't concentrating.
I'm sorry.
Oh, man, I don't know, MichaeI.
I don't know.
I just wasn't thinking.
I'll be okay.
All right.
Now, you want me to give you a lift home or anything? You all right? I'm fine.
I know what you're going through, okay? You're doing all right, man.
You'll be all right.
Hey! Ain't you gonna bust this dude? MAN 2: Write him up! All right, fellas, let's move it back.
All right? Thank you.
All of you guys.
Why don't you bust him? Hey, he's a cop, too, man.
Come on, cop, what's going on? These blue-bellies are scratching each other's backs! I said, let's move it.
Now.
Move along yourself, Tonto.
You're the one stinking up the streets.
(HEART BEATING SLOWLY) Let's get out of here! David? Li Sung? He's sleeping? No.
You're crazy.
He's just sleeping.
Li Sung.
Please.
Wake up.
You have to tell me what to do.
He's gone, MichaeI.
He waited as long as he could.
(KNOCKING ON DOOR) Sorry to barge in, honey, but I Oh, David's a friend.
What do you got for me, Jo? Uh, Lynch.
The string, as they say, is starting to unraveI.
Do you know where he is? Me and everybody else.
You know the old hoteI, The Crossland? Far end of the square? Well, that's where he is.
Alone.
All his people have run out on him.
I also heard he's hurting, Mike.
He took a bullet.
Your bullet.
No.
What's the matter? I don't want blood money.
(SIGHING) Listen, Mike, that place is gonna be swarming with cops.
Let them play hero, huh? Thanks for the information, Jo.
Yeah.
Take it easy, MichaeI, huh? MichaeI, I'd like to go with you.
No way.
You might need a friend.
Look, David.
I don't know what you promised Li Sung, but whatever it was, forget it.
I loved him as much as you did, but neither of us would be here if he hadn't manipulated us into doing what he wanted.
I don't believe that.
You don't believe that.
It doesn't matter what I believe.
MichaeI, don't throw away everything that you have learned here.
If you're gonna kill Lynch Who said anything about killing him? In that case, take me with you.
Look, I don't want you involved in this.
If you're going to get Lynch and help him, and bring him in, you're going to need a doctor.
Okay.
(SIRENS WAILING) David, stay here! No, MichaeI, now wait! Mike.
Glad you're here.
Lynch is sick, Colin.
He's hurt.
Well, he wasn't too sick to blow away the first man who tried to go in there.
SWAT team's on its way.
He needs medicaI treatment.
Save it.
You're too late.
Lynch is a dead man.
I want a chance to No! You can't just kill the man! Shut up, Mike! Just shut up.
Now, I've waited too long for this.
If you want to help, fine.
If you don't you get out of here.
(WOMAN CHATTERING ON POLICE RADIO) Okay.
If that's the way it's gonna be, where do you want me? You got your weapon? (SIGHS) I figured as much.
What's happening to you, Mike? What is it? You want me to help or not? I got Wallis and Blaine on the back exit.
Go help them.
COP ON PA: Ladies and Gentlemen, please stay back.
Stay back! Everybody, keep back.
You get out of here! You don't understand.
I know what he's going through And I told you to get out of here! He's going in the hoteI! Get this man out of here before he gets hurt! Would you listen to me? He's your brother! Put him in the car if you have to! Now listen, I've got to talk to Colin.
His brother's going into the hoteI alone! Why don't you relax, mister? We don't have a charge on you yet, but that can always change.
Listen to me! Lynch? It's MichaeI Roark.
Joe.
I know you're hurt.
I want to help you! (GUN CLICKS) MAN ON MEGAPHONE: Automatic weapons up front! All right, we go in, we go in shooting.
No slack.
Gentlemen, be careful of your feet.
Watch out for explosive devices.
(GROANS) MAN: What's that? What's going on over there? (ROARING) (ROARING) MAN: Call the fire department! All right, move out, move out.
Come on.
David, wait! It's all right, David.
It's all right.
You've got to get out of here, David.
Go! Run! Now! (ROARING) (ROARING) All right, hold it right there.
Put him aside, Mike.
Colin, he's my prisoner.
Put him down, Mike! He tried to escape and we had to shoot him.
He's my responsibility.
I won't let you kill him.
Put him down, now! Dad's dead! We can't change that! Put him down! You wanna shoot? Go ahead! Hey, Colin! Give Mike a hand.
Get that creep to a hospitaI.
Colin.
Thanks.
You're my brother.
The only one I got.
You coming? Sure.
A private investigator.
Feels kind of weird.
I always figured to spend all my life as a cop, like my dad and my brother.
Well, with what I've seen of your contacts, MichaeI, you're gonna have no shortage of people coming to get your services.
It's not that easy, David.
Private investigators spend all their time chasing bad marriages and insurance frauds.
If I'm gonna carry out everything Li Sung stood for, I'm gonna have to choose my clients as carefully as they choose me.
MichaeI, there's always people that need help, legitimate help.
You're gonna do just fine.
What about you? I'm not sure.
You've learned more than you realize, David.
Stay a little longer.
I could teach you.
Thanks, MichaeI, very much, but with Li Sung gone I understand.
Good luck, David.
You be good to yourself.
Goodbye, MichaeI.
