Chapter Seven: The Ecstasy of Death

[Jessie] I can't believe
you of all people.
I thought you'd understand.

I've felt less afraid.

I-I…
I told you the truth. Didn't I?
Suffered the indignation of having
to bare my soul to a psychopath
and a bunch of adolescents.
You didn't tell me the whole truth.
I need you to tell me why you did it.
[shouts] Does it matter why?
It matters because the Rip that you opened
took my mum from me.
[sighs]
You know, when I first met Sherlock,
he was unknown.
I was the one who saw greatness in him.
We moved in together.
Began working cases for the police.
His flaws and foibles were many,
but they were my domain.
I understood how to keep him focused.
So, as his reputation grew…
I took pride in that.
Sherlock Holmes is not the work
of one man, but of two.
His successes were my own.
But as his star rose…
he began to…[exhales shakily]
to drift away from me.
I needed to find a way
to show him that I, too,
was a man capable of…
greatness.
You opened the Rip to impress him?
I wasn't trying to open a Rip.
I only intended to make contact
with the spirit world.
I thought if I was the first one to do it,
he would see--
Why did you save him
and not my mum at the Rip?
Your mother didn't just manage
his flaws and foibles,
she soothed something deep within him.
A place I could never reach.
My mum shouldn't have been
soothing Sherlock,
he should've been soothing her.
You talk about his greatness,
about your greatness.
How can men be so obsessed by it,
yet never see when a woman has it?
Do you not think I know that?
How could I ever compete?
Do you not think…
that watching them fall deeper in love,
every touch they shared, every smile.
Do you not think…
I just, I just wanted him to see me.
Why did you save him and not her?
I didn't make a choice either way,
I just acted--
Why did you save him and not her?
When two people work together
for so long, a bond forms.
[sputtering] We were inseparable.
Tell me why you didn't save my mum!
Because I love him!
Because I've always loved him!
[breathing heavily]

That's why you opened the Rip.

Jessie! Jessie!
What happened?
The devil has arrived in London.
[opening theme music playing]
[Sherlock] When I arrived
down by the harbor…
a dock worker
was carrying her in his arms.
He said this, this visitor from America,
this Linen Man,
as Jessie called him, he did this,
and then he touched another dock worker
who instantly took his own life.
What did he do to her?
Her pulse is up, she's perspiring and…
her eyeballs suggest
she's in a state of unconsciousness
populated by dreams.
Or in this case, nightmares.
He's trapped her in there.
Who is he, Sherlock?
I don't know, John.
I was hoping you could tell me.
I have no idea.
[laughs incredulously]
It's not him, Sherlock.
I know a lot of stuff
has happened between you both,
but what's happening now
has got nothing to do with the doctor.
[Sherlock] He's an Ipsissimus.
He has to be.
If he has the same powers
as Jessie, as Alice,
he can access your greatest fears,
your worst memories,
destroy you with them.
Why is he here? Why is he doing this?
The Rip.
An Ipsissimus like him?
He'd have the skill
to harness all of its power.
He will become a god in this world.

but you weren't strong enough, were you?
When I find the Rip, I will have access
to all its power, Jessica.
There will be no more monsters.
You're a monster.
[the Linen Man] No.
Normal men are the monsters.
I have glimpsed the horrors
men will bring in the centuries to come.
[Jessie gasps]

come about for one reason only.
Fear.
If you can make a man afraid,
you can control him.

Currently we have no way
of finding the Rip.
But now we have a master Ipsissimus
who's gonna find it for us.
Find it for us?
So, what's the plan?

That we stay here

-Because that is where Leopold lives.

but we're very keen to meet him.
He walked straight up
to the reception clerk, touched his arm.

against the wall.
[Watson] My God.
[Gregson] Then he made his way
to the security officer, who…
Well…

reduced to a gibbering wreck.
He's been like this ever since.

why he wanted the case files.

There's a handful of monsters,
but finding one in a city of five million
would be like
looking for a needle in a haystack,
unless you knew the exact location of one.
Arthur Hilton. The Bird Master.
-How quickly can you get us to Bedlam?
-Yeah.
Come with me.
Well done, Beatrice.
Nice work.
[the Linen Man] Do you believe me now
about normal men?
But you and I are more evolved than that.
We will bring order to this world.
What do you mean, "we"?
[the Linen Man]
Why do you think I didn't kill you?
I have a son.
He's an Ipsissimus also.
-You will have a family with him.
-[crying]
[the Linen Man] You will create
a dynasty of Ipsissimi,
who will rule over men
long after I'm gone.
No! You're crazy!
-[indistinct growling]
-[footsteps thudding]
[the Linen Man] I told you
they'd find you.
[gasps]
[the Linen Man] Run and hide, Jessica.
Run and hide.

Whoa, whoa.
[guard] Halt! In the name of Her Majesty!
[Spike] Oh, bollocks.
[cutlery clinking]
[Helena] Horrible business
with this rioting in the city.
We saw some appalling sights
on the way over to the palace.
[slurps tea]
So, the journey over here
was rather eventful.
My sister, Emma,
insisted in bringing her cat,
but when we got to Rotterdam,
the cat got out
of his little cage and disappeared.
In the end, we had to get on the ship
because it was about to leave.
She's sobbing, wailing.

He must've snuck back in.
Must have.

-I'm not boring.
-Really?
Because you seem pretty boring.
I mean, the cat story
wasn't the best story in the world,
but we don't know each other.
I can't start with tales
of drunken debauchery, can I?
The cat story was fine.
You're already in love, aren't you?
I can tell by the look in your eye.
So am I.
His name's Henrik.
He is a clerk at the court in Münster.
You're shocked I'd fall
for a commoner, aren't you?
Perhaps.
And you're just going along with this?
It's what's best for my country.
That's what duty is.
One only feels duty

and I don't care about anything.
So, if we marry,
you do realize they'll want children.
-Which means sex.
-I know how children are made.
Well, please try
and get some practice in before we marry.
-I-I've done it before.
-Good.

Don't presume we're going to marry.

I'm the only one who can stop you.
But why would
you stay in my head like this?
What was it you said to me?
"If you can keep a person afraid,

[Arthur] They won't let me have a window.
On account of the birds.
Yeah, I… I figured.
We need your help.
There's a man coming, Arthur.
A bad man.
He's gonna try and get into your head
and find out where the Rip is.
I don't know what that is. A Rip?
It's where your powers came from.
The things you did were terrible, Arthur.
But I know how these powers twist people,
because I know you're really a good man.
Once he's been in your head…

where the music plays until morning.
You know, afterwards we could
