He was a painter of quiet brilliance.
We had a a personal connection
that went far beyond the art world.
I'm sure many of you have questions
as to why you haven't
seen his work before,
why why it hasn't reached
this kind of stage before.
Well, besides the obvious,
the institutional racism
that limits and punishes
all Black artists,
-the fact is that

Marcus always put his family first.
He made extraordinary, consistent work,
but he didn't isolate
himself from his family
or his community to do it.
He described his marriage
as a work of art.

I think he understood
what so many of us struggle to,
and that is
