The Lying Game s02e01 Episode Script

The Revengers

My name is Emma Becker.
I grew up in a bunch of foster homes and then surprise! I find out I have a twin sister.
You want me to take your place I was the pauper, she was the princess.
Being Sutton was a fantasy come true.
It all worked perfectly until that kiss You're not Sutton.
We tried to stay apart, out of respect for Sutton and what she had with Ethan, but we couldn't.
Of course I didn't know, in L.
A.
, Sutton had secrets of her own.
Part of me wanted just to run, but I couldn't leave my new family, even when I found out they were keeping the truth about our birth mother a secret.
The woman's dead.
What are we going to tell her when she finds out that isn't true? Then Sutton came back to scottsdale, and things got dangerous.
Someone tried to kill me! Next, a woman named Rebecca showed up, with so many lies of her own.
Sutton went into hiding, because there was someone out there willing to kill to keep us a secret.
Who sent you? Dealer was beaten to death last night.
Ethan was blamed for Derek's murder and had to go on the run.
This time, when Sutton seduced him, she wasn't pretending to be anybody except herself.
I love you.
I always have.
I had no idea.
And when Ethan returned, I thought things would go back to the way they were.
But it didn't work out that way.
- I'm sorry; I can't.
- Why? I kissed Sutton on the ranch.
But it's over now.
Ethan has feelings for someone else.
Meanwhile, there was still a killer out there.
If that picture gets into the wrong hands - I might have a solution.
- Okay.
We're getting married.
Digging into Rebecca's past, we uncovered another secret.
The love of her life.
She always had a photograph of his in a locket.
Oh, my God Ted.
Dad and Rebecca had an affair.
- Kristin, whatever Rebecca said - What does is feel like building a family on a Mountain of lies? - You guys need to see this.
- Oh, my God I pronounce you husband and wife.
You're under arrest for the murder of Derek Rogers.
No! Come with us, please.
I was set up! Hey, you okay? So many things I knew.
So many things I still had to find out.
Hi, mom.
It's all working perfectly, Sutton.
Here they come! Is he guilty?! Did you text your heart out to someone about it?! Is he guilty? Is he guilty? Can't tell us anything? Here she comes, over here.
How do you feel about this? Only a few questions, please, as I need to get inside to be with my husband.
Guys, I need a minute.
Save us seats? God, look at these circles.
No sleep, huh? It's too much partying.
Especially last night.
I so wanted today to never come.
He's gonna make bail, Emma.
And when he does, we are all so thoroughly screwed: Me, Thayer, you; everyone who put him in jail.
Honestly, I don't really care.
I'm sorry, but I'm here to confront him, and I just, I need to know why he would kill Derek and what that has to do with my birth mother.
I have one shot, and I'm gonna go straight for the heart.
If that was supposed to make me feel better, it didn't.
Sorry.
It's okay.
Why don't you go on ahead? I'll meet you.
Okay.
Sutton, what are you doing here? Burning curiosity.
Plus I knew that you were going to confront Alec, and I wanted to see it.
Okay, well, what if somebody sees you? This is risky.
Oh, Sutton.
Hi, Rebecca.
Excuse me.
Actually, I was hoping I could apologize.
- For what? - Well, you know, you were trying to warn me about Alec, and I refused to believe you.
But see, I, I was I am, I'm in love with him.
And I just think that he's still being framed.
I'm sure there's a ton of theories out there.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm just gonna go be with my friends.
Of course.
Gotta say, that was quite impressive.
How'd it go with you? I played nice, just like you suggested.
She thinks that we're still hot on the trail of finding our birth mother.
Not going to happen.
Alec is gonna spend tonight in jail, and many more nights.
In the meantime, Sutton, I need you to keep getting closer to your sister.
- Even if I really don't feel it? - Just do what I do with Alec.
Pretend that you love him until he gets thrown in the gas chamber? Actually, it's lethal injection now.
Wish me luck.
Murder, conspiracy, failure to cooperate with law enforcement.
I really have no choice in this matter.
Bail is denied.
The defendant will be remanded into custody until a trial date can be set.
We'll take a ten-minute recess.
You're fired.
Oh, my gosh.
Hey, dad.
Guys, I know this is still awkward, but the offer stands.
You can stay with me, there's plenty of room, and now that your dad's not getting gonna get out any time soon That's okay, Rebecca, but we're good at home.
- Right, Mads? - Yeah.
- This must be so tough on you two.
- Yes, it is.
Thanks again for the offer, but we're fine.
Okay.
If your mom would just talk to me, or listen I have I have an idea.
Fairway Music Fest is this weekend, right? You're performing.
- Mm-hmm.
- If you just get her there, I'll do the rest.
Ted.
Thank you for coming.
You and Alec are such good friends.
- Your support means everything to him.
- Mm-hmm.
Ted, does it really have to be this way? Yeah, it does.
But we have so much in common now.
What we have is what we had, which was a brief affair a zillion years ago.
An affair that ruined my marriage.
I thought it was the lies that you told Kristin that ruined your marriage.
Hey stay out of my life, Rebecca, you hear me? It was so weird.
He actually winked at me.
Like he knows something, or he's ahead of the game.
You can't engage him.
Look, I've always felt that Derek's murder had something to do with our birth mother.
- I think Alec knows who she is.
- Okay, you are not going to see him, do you understand? All he's gonna do is heap on more lies.
Even behind bars, that man is dangerous.
All right, Mads, come on.
Let's get the car and meet these guys out front.
What was that all about? Just something about their father.
Uh-oh.
Awkward.
- Hey.
- Hi.
I didn't see you in the courtroom.
I I wasn't there.
I had a meeting with my parole officer.
I've been skipping school and, um well, you know.
Wow.
Let him drive the convertible now, huh? That's pretty serious.
Soon Alec will be convicted, and I will fleece him in the divorce, and win back Ted, and have my family back together again.
Ted and me and my two twin daughters.
The family that should have been.
Mm-hmm.
Do I sense reservation? It'd just be neater if I were an only child.
In case you've forgotten, Emma stole my life, and well, the girl still has it.
- And you know why.
- If Ted ever found out that you've known I'm your daughter, and that there are twins, you wouldn't have a chance.
Another reason to be nice to your sister, I can tell she and Laurel - are determined to get Kristin and Ted back together.
- Yeah.
Time heals all wounds.
- Except yours, of course.
- Hmm.
I need you to get back in there and find out - what they're planning.
- So you can foil it? So we can foil it.
Foil.
Such a nice ring to it.
Oh, thank God you're making dinner.
I am just too exhausted.
Where've you been, mom? You're all dressed up.
I had a drink with Lindsey Ridgeway.
- Who? - The attorney? The divorce attorney, yes.
I just want to know what my rights are, what happens if I file.
What to expect financially and otherwise.
I think dad just wants to talk to you.
I know, sweetie.
I know that's what he wants, but I just don't know if that's what I want, and I think, in the meantime, if he wants to talk, he can do it through Lindsey.
I think I have to get out of this suit.
A broken home.
- Us - No, Laurel, I'm not gonna let that happen.
I have seen broken homes, and the courts do come in, they take over, the kids get shafted you know.
Not as much as you do, apparently.
You know, I I have a headache.
I'm gonna just skip dinner.
I know, I know I shouldn't risk being seen, but this is crazy.
He didn't get out on bail? What happened in that courtroom? I don't know.
Except they denied bail and he winked at me.
And he had this little smile, like he wanted me to know that he was - Ahead of the game? - Exactly.
This all connects.
He knows about our birth mother.
I am so sure of it.
But if he goes to prison, then the secrets go with him.
- Maybe.
- Well, I want to know about this plot you have to get Ted and Kristin back together.
- Don't tell me that that trail's gone cold, too.
- No.
Saturday night at the club, they're both going to show up to watch Laurel perform.
We just think that maybe their love for their kids will bring them together.
You know what I think, Emma? No, what do you think, Sutton? When our embryos split you got all the heart.
Ethan! You brought me coffee? What a guy.
It's for me.
Another late night? I don't know how this keeps happening.
Look at you, skipping school, riding around on them bikes way too fast.
Forget juvie, kid, you're gonna end up in the morgue.
Well, I'll make sure it doesn't happen in your jurisdiction.
I got to get to work.
You going to be okay? All right.
Bye.
Dan's a lot of good things, but the soft touch it's not his specialty.
Yeah, you can say that again.
Dan's a lot of good things, but the soft Okay.
Nice smile.
You should use it more often.
Thanks for the advice.
Can you take a little bit more? Let me guess, get over Sutton.
The exact opposite.
Don't give up on her.
Or yourself.
Look at Dan and I.
We almost did, and we found our way back.
You and Sutton can, too.
So they're using the event to get Ted and Kristin together.
Get them to talk and work things out.
Hmm, which just leaves one question.
Hmm? What am I wearing to the event? Considering all the trouble you're going to cause, may I suggest a suit of armor? Oh, I'm sorry.
- It's just - It's okay.
I missed so much of your growing up.
Doing my little girl's hair and playing dress up.
I hope you weren't disappointed when you found out I was your mother.
No.
No.
This this has been amazing, Rebecca.
It'll be even more amazing when you go back to calling me mom.
Okay.
Mom.
Well, this is a surprise.
- Is it? - Yeah.
You want to know another surprise? I'm getting pretty good at telling you two apart.
Emma.
How long have you known about us? Let's say a while.
Is that why you killed Derek? To protect the secret? This all connects, doesn't it? You know who my birth mother is.
Your birth mother? I thought you weren't interested in your birth mother, I mean, since you found Ted and Kristin and all.
Look at you.
Sitting there all confused.
You're wondering why you don't just confess it all.
Just come clean.
You know you can't.
You know why.
It'll destroy the only family you've ever had.
I know why I can't say anything.
But what is stopping you from saying something? When I get out of here and I will get out of here maybe I'll tell you.
That's not good enough! I need answers.
You need to tell me something.
Okay.
How about this? I wouldn't trust Sutton.
She might not be as much on your side as you think.
Everything okay? Just threw a chain.
Almost got it back on.
Hmm.
How'd you know I was out here? Oh, I was just in the neighborhood.
Oh, that's pretty convenient.
I remember you used to come up here when you needed to blow off steam.
We used to come up here.
Come here.
Here.
Need you to hold this bolt in place.
Grab the wrench.
Hold it there, tight.
Yeah, good.
So I'm sure you've already heard, I am letting Emma keep my life for a little bit longer.
She needs to get our parents back together, and I respect that.
I got it.
You don't want me to talk about Emma.
I don't want to talk about Emma.
Okay? Or you, or myself.
Okay.
Hey, let's go for a ride.
You have to have a helmet.
Oh, I just so happen to have one in the car.
Really? Come on, what do you say? For old times' sake.
What, you're just giving up? Think you know why.
Oh, is it too dangerous for you? Sutton, get on the bike; I'm taking you back to your car.
No.
Since when has danger ever stopped you? Come on, tell me you didn't enjoy that.
All right, get on the bike.
No get on Ow! Hey, what happened? - Ow, my ankle.
- You all right? Ow! Are you kidding me? I can't believe you went there.
I told you not to.
I told you what would happen, come on.
Sorry.
He knows.
He knows about me and Sutton, that we're twins, our names, the switches.
We suspected that from the beginning.
He told me that I can't trust Sutton, that she's not on our side.
What does that mean? Either he knows something or he suspects something.
Either way, he is messing with you.
You're probably wondering why I asked you here.
The thought crossed my mind, as I was instrumental in putting you here.
Yeah.
I want you to represent me.
This has to be a joke.
No that was my last attorney.
I've decided I need someone familiar with the evidence and absolutely convinced of my guilt.
If I can persuade that person, I can persuade a judge and jury.
Well, I don't think at least in my case that's even a remote possibility.
Have a seat.
Let me try? Go on, sit down.
It's a rather long and complicated story.
So, what did he want? He wants me to represent him.
He's even further gone than I thought.
I told him I would.
What? Theresa, I I get the "everyone needs fair representation" idea.
There is compelling evidence that he didn't do this, that he was framed.
Oh, okay.
So what's the evidence? I can't tell you.
Attorney-client privilege Right.
I'm sorry.
You know, you're so great for doing this.
Thank you.
Well, anybody sees Sutton Mercer in the E.
R.
, you and Emma are out.
Why do you care? Emma has already made it very clear that she wants nothing to do with you, and Thayer just seems to be moving right in.
You're going to need something for the pain.
You have any aspirin or ibuprofen around here? There's a first aid kit in that corner.
Ethan, can I ask you something? Do you think that some things Or maybe even all things happen for a reason and there aren't any accidents? I don't know.
Well, I'm pretty sure that's what native Americans believe.
I saw it in a movie once.
Pocahontas is not the quintessential history of the Native American.
Okay.
It's just that, today on the side of the road, I saw you, and then the guy on the motorcycle drove by, and my ankle.
Yeah, you're gonna need to stay off of it for about a day, okay? So you don't believe in destiny? I can't.
I've been burned by it too many times.
You're upset because I asked to see Emma and not you? You are messing with her head.
I told her not to trust her sister.
That's valid advice.
- How long have you known about the twins? - Immaterial.
Not to me, and not to Emma.
I didn't tell her anything else.
I'm sure as hell not going to tell you.
You two pretty tight now, aren't you? - Yeah.
- When did that happen? Oh, let me guess.
Right about the same time you were both plotting to throw me in jail.
One sister.
Then the other.
You going back and forth between the two? I'd watch that temper, son.
It could get you into all kinds of trouble.
Hi.
Hi.
Clearly, you were expecting Ethan.
He, uh he has to work the Fairway Fest tonight.
Oh.
That's happening already? So, how's it feeling? Any better? Ew.
It's throbbing.
You know, I definitely have some ankle experience.
All that dancing.
I've seen my fair share of twists and sprains.
Maybe I should take a look at it.
Oh, no need.
Ethan has me all set up here with the ice, and pillows.
- He is such a Saint, that guy.
- Mm-hmm.
He is so available now.
Well, thank you for the food, and that's a great dress.
Hmm.
- Going fishing tonight? - No.
No fishing.
Just, uh, gonna go have a good time.
Right.
Everybody's trying to get on with their lives.
I'm not sure I'd be able to get on with my life if I knew my dad was a murderer.
What's that like? I bet not half as difficult as faking an ankle sprain, trying to get Ethan into bed with you.
Have a nice night, Sutton.
Thanks.
Look who's here.
It was a nice move back on East 80.
I'm a little surprised you're still in one piece, though.
So that was you in my rearview mirror.
Let me guess.
You were the girl on the back.
Probably.
California plates? You new in town? Could be.
I'm Jordan.
Hi.
Sutton Mercer.
This is Ethan Whitehorse.
Cute couple.
Not anymore.
Careful.
It's probably a little more power than you're used to.
So, Jordan, are you a member here? No, but never stopped me before.
I like that guy.
- What?! - You heard me.
I need you to hit me in the ankle with this firewood.
- You've lost your mind.
- No.
The swelling has gone down, my ankle is better, and if Ethan finds out that I'm faking it, I am back to square one.
Okay, this is not the way to go about it.
You've set yourself up for failure.
I don't see what you're doing is any different.
I don't have a choice.
When you went up to the ranch What happened? We connected.
How? Why? I stopped playing games.
Because you were honest.
Sometimes I wonder if I'd been more honest with Ted that this might have all turned out very differently.
Well, honesty isn't exactly my forte.
Nor is it mine.
I guess it's another case of like mother, like daughter.
If that's true, then how come it comes so easily for Emma? I don't know who he is.
Jordan somebody.
Hmm.
Ethan seemed to know him, though.
He mentioned something about me being on the back of Ethan's bike.
Hmm.
Well, it was probably Sutton.
She twisted her ankle.
Actually, she faked a twisted ankle, setting up an heroic rescue by Ethan.
Wait a minute.
Where's Thayer? I thought he was supposed to come with you.
He left me a voice mail to meet him here.
Oh.
This thing with your dad has kind of made him crazy.
Yeah, the thing about Thayer is, he is such a good guy, but he also has this major chip on his shoulder.
About your dad? I'll let him tell you.
God, I am so sick of this.
Just pretending like nothing's happened.
Dressing up and smiling while everyone's whispering behind my back.
"Her dad killed someone.
" You want to get something to drink? Uh-huh.
But probably not what you're offering.
Oh, hello, judge.
You got my contribution? Uh, you were very generous, Mrs.
Rybak.
Hi.
What can I get you? Vodka tonic and Chardonnay.
Okay.
Vodka tonic and Chardonnay coming right up.
Thanks.
Kristin.
- How are you? - Oh, I'm fine, Rebecca.
How are you? Well, now that you ask, uh hasn't really been that easy.
Well, I imagine it hasn't been.
How's Alec? Kristin I never really had a chance to tell you how sorry I am for the affair and how you found out.
It was such a long time ago.
And there's really no excuse.
It just happened.
And you and Ted were going through all that fertility stuff, and I'm sorry.
- I really shouldn't go on like that.
- No, please.
Go on.
So, Ted told you about that? Well, yes.
And how difficult it was, especially on you.
You seem surprised.
Well, I guess I just assumed It was only about the sex? Huh.
I'm sorry.
I know you're trying to fix things with Ted.
Forget I said anything.
Oh, I will.
Hi.
There you are.
Sorry, I'm late.
It's okay.
What's up? Nothing.
Uh, just a bunch of hassles.
Hey, I'm gonna grab us a blanket and some food, okay? Okay.
Mom.
Excuse me.
Hi.
- Hey, sweetie.
- Thank you so much for coming.
It means the world to Laurel.
Hi, Kristin.
Hi.
As always, you look amazing.
Well, thank you, Ted.
Think that's a good idea? It's a really rotten idea, and I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone.
Did you know that there are still reporters camped out in front of our house? Thayer and I sneak out the back.
And Ryan dumped me day one.
He said that we should have gone straight to our dad with our suspicions, instead of the cops.
Guys can be so judgmental.
I hate him, even though part of me knows he's right.
Do you want some? Um I can't.
Oh.
Right, 'cause you're on duty, huh? And when you're not on duty you're skipping school, speeding around on that bike of yours and injuring people.
Whatever.
Hmm.
Yeah, those twins have driven you crazy.
Just about.
At this point, you got to know Sutton's faking the ankle.
Yeah, I know.
And you just let her? Why do you allow yourself to be continually punked by that girl? Mads, I've got it under control.
But thank you for your concern.
Well, I feel like doing something crazy, so - All right, well, be careful.
- Oh.
Never.
Excuse me, sir? Are you a member? Actually, uh, he's with me.
There you are, handsome.
I'm sorry.
Is there a problem? My apologies, sir.
Maybe I should introduce myself.
Maybe you shouldn't.
Seems to be working.
Although Kristin is being a little bit weird.
And so are you.
Are you okay? You've been so quiet.
Yeah, I'm good.
I'm okay.
Just looking forward to the show.
I hope this all works.
Dark clouds overhead made a home over our bed I mistook them for mystery like the love stories I'd read and wouldn't you know it turned out to be a tragedy Look at her.
She's incredible.
- I can't believe we created that.
- I can't believe you were with Rebecca when we were trying to create that.
Kristin, please don't do this.
It's true.
You had a relationship with her.
It it was just a brief affair.
You talked to her about us, about me.
What, our life was so horrible you needed this other woman to stroke your ego, give you a shoulder to cry on? - That's not true.
- It is.
I can see it.
I do see it on your face.
It wasn't just a sex thing, a one-night stand.
- It was deeper, it was much deeper than this.
- Okay, whatever it was, I'm sorry.
I never loved her.
I love you.
Love.
God, I don't even know what that is anymore.
You know what? No.
I am not leaving.
You leave, Ted.
I came here to see my daughter perform, and that's what I'm gonna do.
Mom What happened? We can fix it.
Nothing can fix this.
What are you waiting for? It's delicious in here.
I really think we need a proper introduction.
I agree.
How about I'll be lost and you be found? So when are you gonna tell me what's going on? I went to visit my dad today.
I couldn't let him get away with messing with your head.
And now he's messing with yours.
Maybe he is.
He said some things.
Not about the murder, or knowing about the twins.
Just other things.
About me and you.
I just want you to know that I'm not playing some kind of a game here.
My feelings for you have nothing to do with Sutton.
We had whatever we had in L.
A.
, but when I got back here and I met you and I saw with Mads, and your family, I knew that I had found someone real and genuine.
I feel the same way.
That's good.
You know, all this stuff kind of threw us together, so we never really talked about it.
I know.
I promised myself I wouldn't overthink it.
Which is exactly - what I'm doing.
- No.
You're, you're you're being honest.
That's really hard to find around here.
So? Yes, I was faking.
Not in the beginning.
Pretty soon after.
And enough time to make it unforgivable.
You got that right.
You might want to get out of here before Dan gets home.
Ethan, please wait, and let me try my honesty card.
I faked the ankle because I couldn't watch you self-destruct.
And what? Your little sprained ankle is gonna somehow give me something to live for? No.
It would give me someone to talk to.
I miss you.
And I know you are trying to get over Emma, but we had something.
Up at the ranch, and even before then, before Emma even got here, we had something.
We were just crazy, and we were good.
Really good.
We escaped our lives together.
And I tried to get over it, and to move on, but the truth is, Ethan, I I fell in love with you.
And I'm still in love with you.
And I can't shake it, and I don't think you can either.
Good night, Sutton.
I hate this.
Not being able to touch you.
Thanks for seeing me.
I know it's late.
I tried before.
Did they tell you? Yeah.
I just hadn't felt much like having visitors, you know? I was so shocked at the bail hearing.
I thought for sure they'd let you out.
And now they told me that Dan's girlfriend is your new attorney.
She's good.
Real straight shooter.
No B.
S.
You know, she comes out both guns blazing.
I think she'll do fine.
So you're confident? I'll be out of here in no time at all.
Well, thank God.
You know, we'd be coming home from our honeymoon right about now.
I know.
You keep that bed warm for me, okay? Alec "Oh, Alec" what? I just don't know how I'm gonna survive all of this.
I've been wondering the exact same thing.
Give him a chance? I did more than that.
And what was the first thing out of his mouth? - A big fat lie.
- Mom, he made a mistake.
The lie was tonight, Sutton.
Right to my face.
Maybe Rebecca was lying.
I don't want to talk about this.
Oh, sweetie, please, I'm so sorry.
I'm so sorry we ruined your night.
That's okay.
No, it's not.
You were up there singing, it was so lovely, and we just, we made a mess of it.
I don't care.
Sutton and I just wanted this to be a night to heal and now the problem seems worse.
Sweetie, you have to leave this alone.
You both do.
What happened between you father and me is, is a mess, but it's our mess, not yours.
Mads? - What happened? - Hey, sorry.
Uh, I did something crazy and stupid.
It's getting to be a habit with me.
Kristin uh, I was just wondering if maybe, um, I could take you up on that offer.
Sweetie, to move in here? Of course.
Yeah, that'd be awesome.
Absolutely.
It totally worked.
The whole honesty thing.
It was very inspired.
You are inspired.
Thank you, mom.
So does that mean you and Ethan? Nothing huge, but a tiny step closer.
Definitely closer.
Oh, my gosh.
Ted? That's be perfect.
Go Hide.
Hi, mom.
Jordan.
