The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (2021) s01e07 Episode Script

Pond Hockey

ALEX: Previously on
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers
I've got an open roster spot.
I want you to fill it.
I shouldn't have cut you.
Coach T wanted me back.
He said he made a mistake.
On my way to see the old Ducks squad.
It's one of the reasons I stopped by.
They didn't invite me.
You guys gotta go get Gordon Bombay.
Yeah, he doesn't care about this. Or us.
He wasn't invited.
Quack! Quack! Quack! Quack!
(ALL CHEERING)
Let me see something
I haven't seen before, Evan.
Ducks have won state ten straight times.
I'm offering you a chance
to be a part of number 11.
Why is there a video of you
practicing with the Ducks?
- The Ducks invited me back to the team.
- How could you leave us?
But I just went to one practice.
Guys. Guys, I'm really sorry.
I can't believe Evan would even
consider going back to the Ducks
after everything he's
done to get me to join.
This whole place reeks of betrayal.
Yeah. Don't let my naturally
joyful eyes fool you.
Inside, I'm hurting.
Hey, what's wrong with Sam?
He's pretty bummed.
Yeah, but I've never seen
him just sit there before.
He's always skateboarding
into walls and stuff.
Or me. He's often skateboarded into me.
Sam, what's the deal?
(SIGHS)
I don't know.
Evan going behind our backs like that?
It's like I don't have
the will to be crazy.
(SHOUTING) I hate what he's done to you!
Okay. Ready?
Wait, please. Can we circle
around the block one more time?
(SIGHS)
It's gonna be okay. You
went to one Ducks practice.
You've apologized,
like, a thousand times.
They can't possibly still
be mad at you. Come on!
Oh! Thank God! I didn't think
anybody was gonna be here.
Okay, relax. I got this.
Hey, what's up, Don't Bothers?
Looks like you're ready to bother.
No?
- What did I do?
- Gave birth to a traitor.
Hey, man!
I mean, get bent.
Okay. I think what I'm hearing
is you guys are still mad at me.
Well, it looks like we've
got a team problem.
And the only people who can solve
a team problem is the team.
So I'm calling a team
meeting. Players only.
- ALEX: Okay. All right. Everybody in.
- LOGAN: Come on!
We're gonna do this. Everybody
in. This is gonna be fun.
Stay in there until
you figure things out.
You're making us stay in a room that
smells like feet until we make up?
- Yes, exactly.
- Is that legal?
- SOFI: I can't believe this!
- Well, you can sue me.
- MAYA: Come on.
- Just kidding. Don't actually sue me.
- Figure it out.
- LAUREN: Seriously?
SOFI: Why are you locking us up
Thank you all for coming.
Your mom locked us in.
True. And you want to
know what else is true?
That I only went to one Ducks practice.
- "One".
- Oh, my God. Whatever.
But as soon as I got there,
I knew something felt wrong.
I'm never going back.
Please. You guys have to forgive me.
We have a big game against
the Hornets coming up,
and we have to pull together if we
want any chance of beating them.
Are they looking for a new player?
I heard you're available.
Burn.
You were supposed to be our
captain. Our fearless leader.
EVAN: I know I screwed up. I'm sorry.
Hey. Where is everyone?
I set cones. I prepared drills.
I brought pucks. I did things.
Cool. I'm excited for you
to help with coaching,
but there's just a small thing,
we might not have a team.
Oh, they're still angry with Evan
about going to the Ducks practice?
Yeah, but I think I
got it under control.
(CLAMORING)
(CHUCKLES) How long do you think
it's going to take a group
of 12-year-olds
with limited interpersonal skills
to solve a problem with
no adult supervision?
Oh, you called a
players-only meeting. Nice.
- You say that like it's a thing.
- It is a thing.
Really? I did a sports thing?
You did. Yeah, I've been in a few
players-only meetings myself.
Real fight-to-the-death,
gladiator sort of stuff.
Oh, man.
- It's about to get real in there.
- Oh, boy.
- You totally let us down.
- You can't walk all over us like that.
You think you're better than us?
Who am I kidding? I
can't pull off anger.
It's not about who's better.
It's about loyalty,
which you clearly don't have.
Maya, should you really be
lecturing anyone about loyalty?
You're the one with the
history of ditching people.
She's not the only one.
Why didn't you guys invite me
to the sleepover you had?
I live across the street from you.
I saw you popping
Swedish Fish all night.
Every fish was like a dagger to me.
It was a best friend hang, okay?
Koob was just an impromptu addition.
I was impromptu?
I don't know what that
means, but it sounds bad.
Okay. I'm mad just like everyone else!
See? It still feels forced.
Why do you care so much
about a sleepover?
- What about my feelings?
- You guys treat me like
Guys! Guys, we can't
let this tear us apart.
I made a huge mistake. I realize that.
But that wasn't about you guys.
That was just about me.
Yep, it's all about you.
Sam, are you making an origami swan?
It's a turtle.
Oh, my God. You broke Sam.
- You insulted all of us.
- Look at Sam! He's so quiet.
I'm sorry. Guys, guys, I'm
(CLAMORING)
Come on. It's not getting any better.
I have to go in there.
No, you don't have to go in there.
You're the one who used
the word "gladiator".
They could be ripping each
other apart in there.
Don't do it. They can handle this.
Your coaching instincts are spot on.
But my mom instincts tell me to
go in there and give them hugs
and remind them that
tattoos are forever.
Where are you going?
Excuse me. Come on.
EVAN: Just like a pencil!
Don't talk about my
Did you play hockey before this?
Yeah, I actually did. You'd know that
if you listened to my podcast!
- Four hundred episodes!
- I have a lot to say.
- No kidding!
- At least I have a sleep schedule.
- MAYA: Oh, my gosh!
- You recruit me, then just leave?
- What's the point of all this?
- I'm sorry! I'm trying to understand!
(SPEAKING IN CZECH)
- You did something that wasn't kind.
- I'm just trying to apologize.
KOOB: I don't want your
apology. You're making
(CLAMORING)
With face-paint like a woman!
Hey, guys. Guys!
Great meeting. Good job.
Let's calm down and make
some friendship bracelets.
- They'd be bracelets woven of lies.
- Okay.
Oh!
- Nice one, Evan.
- EVAN: Oh. Come on.
- That's clearly not my fault.
- How could it be your fault?
- Yeah, it is.
- I mean, it's 75%
Hey. Shouldn't we call a professional?
I mean, what if that thing,
like, sparks and catches fire?
Not to nitpick,
but one of your emergency
exits opens onto a brick wall.
Nothing is gonna catch fire.
The fuse box overloaded.
So, if there's no power,
the ice is going to turn
into a big puddle.
Well, maybe it's a sign.
We should cancel practice.
Team's a mess anyway.
You were probably right.
I should've just let them
stay in there and work it out.
Problem is this fuse box.
(DISTANT BUZZING)
- What was that?
- Basement fan.
I mean, what have I really
done for this team, anyway?
That first play that worked,
that was yours.
The first game we won was really
Evan being inspired by his dad.
(DISTANT BEEPING)
- I think that was the microwave.
- One more try.
(ALARM BLARING)
Okay. I have no idea what I'm doing.
(GASPS) Really?
Let's just forget it.
Let's just cancel practice.
Actually, there's one
other place we can go.
LAUREN: Where are we? What's happening?
LOGAN: It's so cold out here.
MAYA: Yeah. I'd rather
be fighting inside.
KOOB: How long have we been walking?
Either five minutes or five hours.
BOMBAY: We're almost there.
LOGAN: Seriously, my bag is so heavy.
Yeah. My arm's about to fall off.
I think mine did.
Does anyone see an arm?
BOMBAY: Here it is.
Nature's Ice Palace.
Where's nature's WiFi?
And nature's cocoa bar?
A frozen pond?
- No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- You're doing it again.
Because we've all seen the movie,
where the kids skate out
into the frozen pond
and then there's a crack and a
splash and then they're all dead.
Look, you've got a team
that is falling apart.
This is the best place for them
to work it out and to just play.
The ice isn't gonna break.
You gotta trust me.
This is where I learned how to skate.
Pond hockey. Shinny. Pick-up.
Whatever you call it,
it's the reason so many kids
fall in love with the game
when it's played out here.
On the pond, there are
no boards, no zones,
and no one in the stands.
Out here is where you get the
tactical edge on your opponent.
So we're gonna develop
your sixth sense. Instinct.
Yeah, my instinct tells me
I'm more of an indoor person.
That's why we're gonna start small.
No gear, no skates.
Just feel the ice under your feet.
This doesn't make me nervous at all.
You're totally not going
to fall through the ice.
I think I saw a bear.
- NICK: Watch out!
- Thanks.
EVAN: Look at all the
snow. It's beautiful.
BOMBAY: Hey, Don't Bothers.
You know what I think?
- What?
- I think,
tag, you're it.
Very cute, Bombay.
But I think I'm a little too old to cave
to the pressures of being tagged.
- Evan's it.
- (SCOFFS)
- ALL: Evan's it. Evan's it. Evan's it.
- EVAN: Are you serious?
Are you serious? Are we
really buying into this?
I don't wanna be it. Oh, my God, I'm it.
(ALL CHUCKLING)
- BOMBAY: Logan!
- KOOB: No!
- Don't come near me!
- NICK: Evan, go, go!
Oh, my God!
- LAUREN: Sam, come on.
- LOGAN: Who's it?
- MAYA: Catch him!
- SOFI: I don't know! Come on!
- NICK: Watch out!
- BOMBAY: Logan's it!
- LAUREN: Uh-oh!
- MAYA: Oh, no!
- SOFI: Wait, who's it?
- MAYA: No way!
SOFI: Koob! No!
- KOOB: You're it!
- SOFI: No, I'm not!
Sofi's it!
(ELECTRONIC MUSIC PLAYING)
Go!
Are you okay? You're not
getting frostbite, are you?
Mom, please, I'm fine.
All right. I will back off.
If you need me, I'll be
in the car with my thermos.
When you receive a pass,
you wanna cradle it.
Soft hands. I used to do this with eggs.
But I think you care more about these.
It's, like, 120 weeks of
allowance down there.
EVAN: Yo, is that me
on your home screen?
Is it? Huh.
BOMBAY: Improving as individuals
can only take you so far.
You need to learn how
to protect each other.
So start passing.
Please be good to her.
- BOMBAY: You got it. That's it.
- KOOB: Oh, man.
- Soft hands.
- Don't break it.
BOMBAY: Protect each other's
phones, protect each other.
NICK: Please be careful.
LOGAN: Going slowly.
KOOB: Yeah!
- BOMBAY: Yeah! Nice!
- (CELL PHONE RINGING)
Your moms are calling.
Should I pick it up?
Only if you want a pleasant
and encouraging conversation.
- Okay.
- MAYA: Be careful.
Dude, that was so awesome.
Wait, we still might be mad at you.
- Are we still mad?
- Yeah, still mad.
Yeah, we're still mad.
What are you doing?
I don't deserve this.
A real captain doesn't do what I did.
A real captain stays with the ship.
And a real captain
stays with the crunch.
Now, I don't get to wear
this until I earn it back.
Okay. We forgive you.
Welcome back.
So, who's captain now?
If no one's going to step up
and take it, I guess I can
That's not what this team is about.
We played better out here
than ever before
'cause we didn't care
about those things.
So either we're all captain
or none of us are.
All right. Come on.
Bring it in. "Don't Bothers" on three.
ALL: One, two, three, Don't Bothers!
Hey! How about that pond hockey?
NICK: Pretty great!
- LOGAN: Yeah!
- LAUREN: That was cool, right?
- EVAN: That was so fun!
- LOGAN: Let's go, DBs!
MAYA: I can't believe
I fell over that stick.
Just to be clear.
I'm not the captain but
I am a captain, right?
My moms are gonna be so proud.
MAN: Large double cheese. Order up!
But seriously, how
cold was it on that ice?
But tag was still surprisingly fun.
Yeah, really.
Did anyone see when Nick got scared
when the bunny hopped across the ice?
That was hilarious.
NICK: Okay. All right. I have
a fear of rabbits. All right?
KOOB: Why? They're fuzzy like
Hey! Your edge work
looked sick on the pond.
Can't wait to show the
Hornets what we got.
Yeah. Cool. Whatever.
Okay. You're still mad at me.
I get it.
I convince you to leave the Ducks
and then I think of joining back.
It was wrong.
Little bit.
I gotta go ice my knee.
I think I probably tweaked
it out on the ice again.
And I have a Latin test on Monday.
Well, wait.
Is there anything I can do
to help you get past this?
I mean, everyone else already has.
That's the thing, Evan.
I didn't think I was like
everyone else to you.
You were struggling and you didn't
even think to come talk to me?
I kinda thought we were
that person to each other.
But I guess I was wrong.
Okay. How do you say in Latin,
"I'm sorry and I totally suck"?
(SPEAKING IN LATIN)
She actually knew it.
- It's Mickey Mouse.
- Evan, where's your mom?
- She said she's gonna be running late.
- Where's Sam?
We tried texting him,
but he didn't answer.
- All right, guys. Bring it in.
- Okay.
LAUREN: One sec!
LOGAN: Come on.
Koob, your hands are fast,
but your feet are
like two potted plants.
Any team finds that out, we're toast.
Sorry, coach. My feet
can't go any faster.
We'll see about that.
Come here.
Just skate around a
little bit. No pressure.
Told ya. This is as fast as I go.
Freeze!
- Do you hear that?
- Hear what?
I don't wanna freak you out, Koob.
But it sounds like right
where you're standing,
the ice is cracking.
- "Cracking"?
- Go!
Get out of my way. The ice is cracking.
Watch out!
I guess the ice is fine.
And it looks like someone's
got fast feet after all.
LOGAN: Poor Koob.
EVAN: Nice one!
DON'T BOTHERS: Koob! Koob! Koob!
- LAUREN: Yeah, Jaden!
- BOMBAY: Yeah, nice!
- Hey, I was just gonna come find you.
- Hey.
- What is that?
- It's a microwaved burrito.
I feel bad. We just
had a partner meeting
and I threw away an entire
tray of leftover sushi.
That's okay. This is good stuff.
It's got 150% of my sodium for the day.
Mmm.
Okay, so, per our agreement.
You can do this after
your hockey practice.
Oh, well, I'm not actually
going to hockey practice,
- so I can do it right now.
- But
Oh, no. Is your team giving up?
It's probably time. You put
those kids through enough.
(CHUCKLES SOFTLY) No, it's just
that Gordon Bombay is stepping up,
so I'm stepping back.
It just makes sense.
Gordon Bombay? Why?
Yeah, sure, he has some sort of a magic
that tends to bring out
the best in the under-gifted,
but what about you?
Well, no, see, he's an actual coach.
I get out there, I'm worried
they're gonna fall down.
It just makes more sense
for him to step in.
Oh, honey, no. Uh-uh. Nope.
Not gonna let you do that.
- What's happening?
- I know you look up to me as a role model.
- I don't.
- No, you do. I know. And it's fine.
- I'm gonna give you a piece of advice.
- Okay.
I may have made Minnesota's
Top Women's Power Lawyer List
- for 12 years running.
- Mmm-hmm.
- But guess what?
- What?
(WHISPERING) I'm scared too. Oh, yeah.
But I've learned you've
gotta face your fears.
Like, I was afraid of heights,
and what did I do?
I jumped out of a frigging airplane.
Is that why you have a
propeller in your office?
Uh-huh. And every time
I look at it, I remember,
when you're scared, you
just run towards the fear.
That's how you beat it.
You gotta get yourself
out of your comfort zone.
Let those kids fall. Heck,
trip 'em, if you have to. Okay?
They'll be better off. And so will you.
Can't believe I'm saying
this, but you're right.
- Thank you. I'm gonna go. (CHUCKLES)
- (LAUGHS)
So, turns out I can't
get this done tonight.
Good for you. But, seriously,
when can I get this?
- NICK: Look at that butterfly.
- EVAN: Yeah.
ALEX: Hey, guys.
Guys. Bring it in.
Had a big idea.
I think I've been holding us back.
I was just being too worried
about safety and stupid stuff.
So, I've been thinking,
maybe we could work with our
senses in a different way.
Using blindfolds.
Whoa, whoa, whoa! Hold on. Say what?
(LAUGHING) I know.
It's just a crazy idea, but,
uh, I thought we could
feel our way, you know?
Use our instincts.
I call it "Feel Hockey".
Not field hockey, it's feel
hockey. Do you get it?
- Ah.
- It's a working title.
All right, guys, try on your blindfolds
and let's see what we
get with Feel Hockey.
BOMBAY: You heard her.
The coach says put on a blindfold,
put on a blindfold.
You can do it, guys.
See with your hearts.
LAUREN: Who has the puck?
MAYA: How would we know?
SOFI: Just be quiet and listen.
(CROW CAWING)
Oh, I can hear it.
It's coming. I hear it.
(ALL GROANING)
EVAN: Hey! Who tripped me?
This worked better in my head.
Probably where it should've stayed.
LOGAN: What is this?
MAYA: That's my foot.
- LOGAN: Here.
- Still my foot.
- LAUREN: Whoever that is better watch it.
- LOGAN: Sorry.
KOOB: I think I found it.
Wait. That's just the net.
SOFI: Who's breathing so loud?
NICK: Me. In terror.
- Why isn't this working?
- 'Cause they're blindfolded.
(ALL GROANING)
KOOB: Can someone help me? I'm stuck.
If you need me, I'll be
in my car with my thermos.
- I thought I was gonna hit everybody.
- It went so bad.
Couldn't see a thing.
(CELL PHONE CHIMES)
Guys, guys.
Sam finally texted back.
He's quitting the Don't Bothers.
He's headed to the rink
to clear out his locker.
- What?
- He doesn't feel like being crazy anymore
so he doesn't think there's any point
to him being on the team.
Well, we gotta stop him.
Sam, what are you doing? You can't quit.
I am.
Don't worry. I got this.
After all, I am a captain.
Yeah, I got nothing.
KOOB: We need you.
Evan's mom just made us
do blindfolded hockey.
We almost died.
You're the only one of us
who would have nailed it.
Okay. I realize all this is my fault.
I'm so sorry.
I'm just trying to understand
why this hit you so hard.
I was never really
on a team before this.
I'd go to school. I'd go to the mall.
I'd skateboard down
some big flight of stairs
and then get yelled at by some adult.
You were the first person
who looked at me and said,
"We need what you've got".
So when I heard that you
were just gonna drop us,
it was like, did any
of that even matter?
It did matter. And I've
realized that big time.
But we need what you've got.
We need you out there
breaking the rules.
We need you to be crazy.
You're our X-factor. And we'd
stand no chance without you.
"X-factor"?
Yeah.
I'm not hating that.
All right. Come on. Show us
a little X-factor, right now.
X-factor!
- (GRUNTS)
- Ooh!
Boom! I'm back.
- That's my guy.
- Yeah.
You were right. I should
have just talked to you.
I guess I just got so
caught up in thinking
how the Ducks might help my future,
I didn't even consider
how much it would hurt you.
Because
the truth is, I don't think
you're like everybody else.
I think you're special,
which is why I got you this.
It's a knee-compression sleeve.
From Target. I got the good kind.
Thoughtful and practical.
My favorite kind of gift. I love it.
And I forgive you.
But you're still an idiot.
Hey.
Good thing we got the power back, huh?
Churro machine, up and running.
Cheers to that. Shouldn't
you be down on the bench?
(SCOFFS) Shouldn't you be
down on the bench?
I'm not the coach. You are.
Let's not. Come on.
You have the natural coaching instincts.
You saw me on the pond. It's a disaster.
If you like, I can
even make it official.
I hereby knight thee, Gordon Bombay,
new coach of the Don't
Bothers, prithee proceed.
(SIGHS)
- I cut the power to the Ice Palace.
- What? Why?
I needed to break the flow.
Get everyone to take
a moment to regroup.
And you know who taught me that move?
You did. Yeah.
You took a guy who didn't
care about anything anymore,
a guy who was hiding out.
You got me back into the game.
It's a game that I love.
You knew that if you just
pushed me a little bit,
that all the pieces
would fall into place.
If that's not natural coaching
instinct, I don't know what is.
You are a coach, Alex. You
just need to trust yourself.
REFEREE: Hey, where's the coach?
- You can be a nice guy when you want to be.
- REFEREE: We need the coach!
Don't you first-name me.
- EVAN: Let's go!
- Get out there on the ice.
Does this team have a coach or not?
It's me!
- Koob, go!
- Nice.
Keep those feet flying, Koob.
X-factor! Yeah!
X-factor now!
(ALL CHEERING)
EVAN: Don't break my phone.
SOFI: Soft hands.
- Yeah, Sofi. Looking good.
- Go, Sofi!
- All right, time out, DBs. Bring it in.
- (BLOWS WHISTLE)
- REFEREE: Time!
- Bring it in.
Excellent hustle, guys.
If we run down the clock, we
can tie with a really good team.
Except I don't think we're
here to "run out the clock".
I think we're here to win.
I have a play, and I know
you guys can pull it off
because we have something
they don't. Blind trust.
- God. She's busting out the bandanas again.
- Cool.
No. No bandanas this time.
Just stay with me.
You guys know this ice.
You've skated every inch of it.
But more importantly, by
now, you know each other.
The magic we found on
the pond got us this far.
Let's take it all the way. Huh?
- Bring it in.
- Let's do it.
Okay, look, ultimately you
want him to take the shot.
- EVAN: Okay.
- The first one to pass
(BLOWS WHISTLE)
- Go.
- Break! Go get 'em!
- Go, guys!
- Go!
Go, team!
Hey, man. Why are your eyes closed?
Can they do that?
(ALARM BLARING)
Yeah! Good job! Good job!
Mom! That was amazing!
Mom who? Call me coach.
