Draft Day

Previously on
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers
The first half of the summer
is all about individual training.
Then your rankings will lock,
the coaches will draft
teams for tournament play.
All the pressure that my dad put on me
made me choke
in the biggest game of my life.
This whole camp, it's making
me feel like I'm going backwards.
So what, you're mad at me
'cause I wanna do well here?
No, no. You go for it.
It's just not what I want.
Sorry. I'm just telling you,
this is why I thought this
game was a bad idea.
You know what, I'm
tired of you telling me
everything that's wrong with this place.
So you think you can do better?
Here! You got the job, Coach.
Oh, hey there, Coach.
- Big day tomorrow. The draft, huh?
- Yeah.
Can I just say how
impressed I am by you?
You drove out West
like a little settler,
you don't care what anyone says
about you behind your back,
and now you're taking
on this role. Brava.
Thank you so much.
So, you think I have a chance to hold
my own here, hockey-wise?
Oh, no. You're gonna be crushed.
It'll be hard to watch.
- Hey, Mom.
- Oh, hi. Hi. Hi.
All right, before you go,
I just wanted to wish you, uh,
good luck in the draft and,
oh, one tiny thing.
If you can not pick me,
that will be great. Thanks.
What do you mean? I've been
givin' you all kinds of space.
No, it's not about that.
I was just really hoping that
Coach Cole would pick me.
Oh, him.
Yeah. I feel that he can take my game
to next level, and no offense,
but I just don't want my coach
asking me what I want for dinner.
I'm trying to feed you when
you're Okay, fine.
I won't pick you.
Yes! Thank you.
Hey, Morrow.
Hey, what is this spell
you have over these kids?
My own son just told me he wants
to be on your team, not mine.
Ah, no spell. He's got good instincts.
Great athletes wanna win.
It's human nature.
Where'd you learn that?
Uh, the NHL.
Oh.
Look, there he is.
Bet he's gonna pick me tomorrow and then
it's just gonna be
another summer of hell.
I mean, maybe he won't.
You kinda suck right now,
so you got that going for you.
Yeah, true.
Can I top off your drink?
What's happening?
Well, the draft's tomorrow and
I'm on top of the big board,
so I'm the presumptive number
one draft pick, and you're
Last. Yeah, I know. Still here.
Still looking at ya.
Anyway. So, a little traditional leadin'
up to the big night
is first serves last.
Oh, yeah. See, that's fun because,
you're the best and I'm the worst
and, you know, this would
never happen in real life.
But you're serving me, so we're
flippin' it. Okay. I like it.
Pour away, my good man.
Oh, and can I get a bendy
straw while we're at it?
Not sure they have those.
This displeases me.
All right, everybody, listen up.
So, tomorrow night is our annual draft.
Yeah!
Yes. That's where the coaches
pick their teams for tournament play.
Now, the player rankings are gonna
lock at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow,
so push as hard as you can, okay?
Leave it all out there on the ice.
Oh, and it's a classy event,
so dress it up, all right?
Those clothes that your mommy packed ya?
Put those on, all right?
Marni, what do you got?
Okay. Every coach's name is written
on one of these ping-pong balls
that I will now draw
to set the draft order.
And let's get started.
Hmm. Let's do it, Vanna.
And pick number one is
- Coach Cole.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
What? Hey, hey, hey, hey.
It's not my fault the balls
know who's boss, all right?
Okay. Pick number two.
He made these earrings. Coach Toby!
Yes! Yes!
Congratulations, Coach.
- All right.
- Yeah!
Coach Dawn.
Oh!
Pick number seven.
Okay, this is my former roommate
who told me she didn't wanna
have to talk every night.
Coach Jackie.
And our last, number eight pick
The suspense is killing us all.
Coach Alex.
I'm sorry. I do believe that
fate has its own language.
We can't speak it, but we must trust it.
Whoo!
You okay?
I don't know, Nick. Last pick.
I really wanted to stick it to that guy,
and now, I think he's
gonna stick it to me.
And that's much less satisfying.
I'm going down at this camp.
Uh-uh. No way.
You gave me my chance
last season to play hockey.
You rescued me from
the middle of a hotel bar.
You discreetly told me
not to wear velour.
You're not going down. Not on my watch.
That's very sweet. But how?
I know analytics. I can break down
the stats on all the kids here.
Help you find undervalued talent.
I've played an unhealthy
amount of fantasy sports.
I know how to wheel and deal.
So, what are you saying?
I'm saying, you won't have
the eighth pick for much longer.
So, I saw you sitting with Jace.
Oh. That was nothing. Just random.
So, you and Evan are okay? You're solid?
I mean, he's just so into this place.
It's not exactly where I'm at.
I don't know. Something's off
with me and Sofi. I just don't get it.
I sensed that. You need a hug?
Maybe. But not here in the hallway.
That's fair.
She's sitting with Jace.
I don't know what's that about.
She is wearing the pizza
necklace you gave her.
Is she wearing it 'cause I got it,
or 'cause it looks good on her?
Dude. It's a necklace with
a slice of pizza on it.
- Of course it's because it's from you.
- Yeah.
You need to have some fun, okay?
I mean, you're Sofi and Evan,
you go together.
You're like boba and a big round straw.
You gotta work it out. I just care
so much about the both of you.
Also, if you split up, it'd be
awkward for the friend group,
and this is my first friend group ever.
But, you know, mostly
the "care about you thing".
You gotta stick with Evan. He's great.
And it's gonna work better for me.
For you?
Because if you guys break up,
then I have to choose sides and then
Christmas is gonna suck,
like it does for my cousins,
'cause my aunt and uncle got divorced.
Do you wanna kill Christmas?
- No.
- Oh, um
Evan misses Sofi and feels like
he needs some alone time with her.
Sofi agrees. She feels it too
and she'd love some Q time.
- Hello.
- Hi.
Look, I know things have been
a little weird between us.
Yeah, a little.
But I'm really trying to
Me too. I mean, if not for us,
for our friends, right?
Yeah. Staying together
for the kids. Classic.
So, how do we
I have an idea.
Coach Jackie. There we go.
She currently has the seventh pick.
Why would she trade picks with me?
Well, she's frustrated because
there's a mixer in town Thursday night,
but she has to work.
As a jacked woman, she
kind of intimidates guys.
- It's hard to meet somebody.
- How do you know all this?
I have the kind of face people
like to dump emotional baggage on.
- It's a blessing and a curse. Mmm-hmm.
- Thursday night, huh?
Let's go.
Oh, hey. Jackie.
Alex, how are you?
Good. Let me take that for you.
You don't
- Oh, my God. Wow.
- Oh, okay.
That is quite something.
Um, my friend Nick here tells me that
you need the night off on Thursday.
- And I'd be happy to cover for you.
- Really?
Yes. Just one little favor. Trade
me your ping-pong ball for mine.
No.
Come on.
Are you really gonna remember if
you had the seventh or the eighth pick
when you're telling the story of
how you met your husband?
I'm really just looking to hook
up, but I see your point.
You got a deal.
- Wow.
- Mmm-hmm.
That's Chuck. He's pick number six.
Looks like he's eating
the ancient grain bowl.
Wow. He's going at it like soft serve.
Don't know what he'd want
for his pick, though.
Kind of a loner. Keeps to himself.
Loner, huh?
Hmm.
We made it all the way from Minnesota.
They wouldn't let me park it on
campus, so I parked it out here.
And it could be your private hideaway
in the woods for a night.
No kids. Peace and quiet.
All you have to do is trade
me your number six pick.
How's the water pressure?
I like a punishing shower.
Oh, oh, it's great. It'll leave marks.
Oh, okay. Yeah, let's do this.
- Great.
- Perfect.
Hey, Coach Mitch.
How's Mary and the twins?
Nice, nice. That's great.
So, you have the fifth
pick in the draft, right?
What are you doing, dude?
Oh. Sofi wants me to break curfew
tonight and sneak out of the dorm.
Nothin' like a little danger
to fire up the romance.
Make sure you wear a bug spray,
you'll get eaten alive out there.
I'm nervous.
I've never done this before.
And I don't wanna get caught.
Eh. You'll be fine. I sneak
out almost every night.
What?
Yeah, I'm rarely here between
1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m.
What do you do?
That's between me and the night.
- Oh, no, no, no, no, don't worry.
- It's just Lawrence. Come.
I warmed your blanket and
pillow for you in the dryer.
Ah, thank you.
You mean his stuffed animal, Pucky.
Lawrence, my friend Sam is upsetting me.
Okay, fine. Whatever. It's a pillow.
Thank you, Lawrence. That will be all.
Okay. It's go time.
Good luck.
Be safe. Call.
Hi.
So, hey, what's up?
You ready?
Born ready.
- Bear.
- Wait, what?
How do you think that's a bear?
No, it's a bush.
Why would you say it's a bear?
Sorry. It looked like a bear.
How does that look like a bear?
Someone's coming. Come on.
Hide.
Hello?
We are all clear on area seven.
No troublemakers, no shenanigans.
Oh, my God. That was so close.
No, that was too close.
- We shouldn't have done that.
- What?
Look, I should have
never agreed to this.
Now we're gonna get in trouble
and I'm not gonna get drafted.
Wait, really? That's all you can think
about right now? The draft?
I mean, yeah.
What Not me? Not having
an adventure? Just the draft?
Come on. I'm sorry.
It's important to me.
Clearly.
I know deep down that
it's important to you too.
This "I don't care" attitude,
I'm not buying it.
Well, it's real.
Yeah? Is that why you were working
on your PSAT prep book?
Just the math section.
Come on. Don't you wanna get
everything you can out of this place?
Well, I do.
And I really hope that Coach Cole
drafts me and I hope he drafts you too.
Maybe we should just
get some rest, okay?
I wanna be on the ice at 7:00 a.m.
So I can move up a couple of spots
before the rankings lock.
See you then? Please?
Come on, let's take this ride together.
Come on, Sofi.
Orange jersey, great ice vision,
high hockey IQ, all-around player.
Check how that goalie
cuts down the angles.
- Plus, I hear he can do the splits.
- Ah!
A.J. Lawrence, the best player here.
The presumptive number one pick.
He's the dream, if we can get you there.
Hmm.
Who's that guy? He's awesome.
That's Evan.
Right, he is unavailable to you
for personal reasons.
We are not gonna touch that one.
All right, let's go.
We have an appointment with the
coach sitting on the second pick.
So, you've got pick number three now
and you wanna trade
for my number two pick?
Exactly. What's it gonna take?
And so, the chess match begins.
Oh, come on. There's gotta be something.
I will say, Alex, you fascinate me.
You're so different from everyone here.
Thank you.
I'd really like to see
what makes you tick.
Maybe we could have lunch sometime.
Or better yet, dinner.
Yeah, she's in.
Um
Okay, sure. You've got a deal,
but let's make it lunch.
Maybe a late lunch?
Just lunch.
And we're locked.
Number one on the board! Let's go!
A.J. Lawrence. First place, baby!
Hey, you didn't show up this morning.
I was really hoping that you'd come.
I know. Good luck tonight.
Oh, crap, Christmas is gonna suck.
It's always the kids who suffer.
Well, look at you. Dress, make-up.
Am I sensing a full buy-in here, Morrow?
Oh, no, no, no.
I just needed to let you know that
I'm going to rock the draft
and take you down.
- I'm sorry, is that trash talk?
- I think so.
- Eh, you're not good at it.
- I thought it was solid.
Solid B, maybe. Anyway,
we should get goin'.
Okay, before we do, one thing,
trade picks with me.
I'm the first pick, you're the eighth.
Why would I do that?
I actually have the second. It's
been a productive couple of days.
Still?
I mean, you own the camp and
you got the number one pick?
Not great optics on that.
Okay, you were there.
Those ping-pong balls were
totally random. That's life.
Yeah, but it's pretty easy to win
with the number one
pick, don't you think?
I mean, what are you really proving?
Coach Cole raises a banner
with his name on it,
at the camp he owns?
Congrats?
All right. You know what? The head
games, they don't work on me.
But I am liking the gauntlet
that you're throwin' down.
All right, I'll trade ya. You now
have the first pick overall.
Yeah.
And I'm still gonna beat you.
The head games worked.
No, I'm just accepting
your challenge, that's all.
- Maybe that was part of the head games.
- Nope.
Hello, uh, Lawrence.
Could you rustle me up some sort
of ottoman to prop my feet up?
Right there.
Yeah, that's over, guy.
Well, it was It was
fun while it lasted.
Okay, here we go.
Wow. Look at this group.
You guys clean up well.
No, seriously. Thank you. For showering.
Anyway, welcome to
EPIC's annual draft night.
Yes, yes, yes.
So every summer when we do this,
it reminds me of when I got the call
from the Buffalo Sabres. To the pros.
It was one of the most exciting
moments of my life.
Then I spent my first win in Buffalo.
Not quite as exciting.
Loved the city, just not
the weather so much.
Anyway, I hope that some of you
get that same call someday.
But tonight, you're
all gonna get that call.
And you deserve it,
because you've worked
really hard these last few weeks.
So, enjoy your evening,
because tomorrow, we're
gonna play some hockey!
Yeah.
Yes, we are!
Okay, let's get this thing started.
There's been a slight change.
The first pick of the draft
goes to Coach Alex Morrow.
Thank you.
With the first overall pick
of the EPIC draft,
I choose
Nick Ganz.
Oh.
Whoo!
I'm sorry. Good luck. Don't kill me.
Don't know what's goin' on right now.
Why did you pick me? I'm literally
the last one on the board.
So what?
You didn't need the number
one pick to pick me.
I did. You are number one,
in more ways than that dumb
board could ever track,
and I needed everybody to know it.
Well, as your assistant GM,
that was a terrible pick.
Oh.
But as your number one pick,
thank you so much.
You're welcome. Now let's
get the rest of you guys.
Well, that was sweet.
Now, moving back to the hockey
portion of the evening.
With the second overall pick,
I choose A.J. Lawrence.
The number two pick?
That's called adversity.
Now there's a chip on my shoulder.
Rachel Walker.
is Anthony Torres.
Jaden Koob Koobler.
Yeah.
For my second pick
Uh, my second pick, I'll take Brian Lee.
Maya Kasper. Sam Samitar.
Sofi Hanson-Bhatt.
Whoo-hoo!
Cody Lawrence. Gertie Willins.
I pick Evan Morrow.
Thank you.
Down to my last pick. Who should I take?
Pick Jace, he's one of us.
You sure? I find him
a tad bit intimidating.
Trust me. He's got some issues,
but all of us Don't Bothers do, right?
My final pick
is Jace Cole.
And that concludes our summer draft.
Let's announce the team names.
Our team's name is Dominate.
Focus.
- Perseverance.
- Yeah!
- Hustle.
- Yeah!
- Endurance.
- Yeah!
Let's go!
Accountability.
Intention.
We are The Mighty Ducks.
Hey.
- Hi.
- I wanted to thank you.
For what?
Oh, you know, for undermining
everything this place stands for.
I mean, I don't know
why it surprises me.
I don't think I undermined anything.
Really? Picking from the
bottom of the board up?
Drafting, no offense, some
of the worst players here to,
what, make them feel better?
Ah, okay. See, I didn't pick them
to make them feel better,
I picked them because they
are the best team,
and we are going to win,
because we're a team.
Ducks fly together.
- You really believe that, don't you?
- Yes, I do.
Mostly. Pretty much. 80%.
Thank you. For picking my son.
Ah!
Thank you for picking Evan.
Really means a lot to him.
Well, he deserved it.
All right. Well, see you on the ice.
Yeah. See you out there, Coach.
Hardest thing in the world,
not picking you.
Yeah. I know.
Look
Thanks, Dad. Really.
Good luck out there, kid.
Can't believe you're not
on our team anymore.
Yeah, I know.
It's gonna be weird.
Yeah, I mean, you recruited us.
None of us would be
Mighty Ducks without you.
I didn't know that my mom was gonna
get you guys all back together.
- But, friends still?
- Best friends.
- Yeah.
- Wow.
This must be what it feels like when
families are broken apart by civil war.
- See you back in the room in two minutes.
- Yeah. See you there.
All right, man.
- See ya.
- See ya.
- Hey.
- Hi.
I'm gonna miss all you guys.
Us, too. But, hey, good for you.
You got on team Dominate.
Yeah. I guess we're just
on different paths right now.
Yeah, guess we are.
So, this is it for us?
Maybe it is.
You want this back?
The pizza necklace?
No. Please, you keep it.
We may not still be going out,
but pizza will always be
our common denominator.
Yeah. You actually used that right.
I may have picked up
one or two things from you.
I hope you find what you're looking for.
Take care of my guys for me, okay?
