The Resort (2022) s01e07 Episode Script

La Pubertad del Matrimonio

1
Don't you miss it?
I'm starting to forget things.
Who I am. Who we are.
What's this?
It's my tooth. It broke.
I am worried about you.
- Okay, well, great.
- I feel very cared for.
Two kids are missing.
Hey, Vi?
Where is she?
All of these places in your book
are real places in the Peninsula,
all leading to Pasaje.
This is all my fault.
I started a series of events
that ended up in death.
We have to go find Pasaje.
That's where they were going,
so we gotta go there too.
Emma, you gotta move on.
Don't follow me.
You have six new messages.
First message.
Hi, Mr. Thompson.
I don't know if this hotline is real,
but my name is Emma Reed,
and you don't you don't know me.
But I'm here in Akumal
at the Bahía del Paraíso,
and a few days ago
Emma?
Emma.
And another smile.
Oh Luna! Hey!
Okay. Keep the smiles.
Hey, Luna, you haven't seen
Emma anywhere, have you?
No, Mr. Reed. Is everything okay?
Oh, yeah, it's fine.
She's probably just at the pool.
Okay, smile.
For real? For real.
- Hey, it's Emma.
- Uh, I'll call you back.
Thanks. Bye.
What in tarnation?
There's a guy down there!
Oh, shoot. Did my ball hit you?
- What the hell?
- Are you all right?
Don't touch it. You just let it lie.
Huh? What?
Hey!
Hey, you!
Don't you hiss at me.
- Come back here, you.
- Hey.
Wait!
- How about snorkeling?
- Not so much.
I have trouble breathing
out of my mouth.
I have a trachea that kind of just
shuts down sometimes with allergens.
- Oh, okay.
- Stop, stop, stop.
I have never been snorkeling, so
What? You have never been snorkeling?
A grown man has never been snorkeling.
I've told you.
Ted, please don't shame me
in front of people.
I'm not shaming you.
You know, I grew up lower middle-class.
My family never did these things.
Snorkeling is not
an expensive activity, Ted.
It's just that I have trouble with it.
- It's fine.
- Maybe we can do something else.
I'm so sorry. Excuse me.
I think you're missing the
point about being surprised.
Oh, for Christ's sake.
Are you still worked up about this?
Yes. I want you to pick
something new and different
for us to do,
something that I've never done.
- Is it so hard?
- Yes, it's hard.
I don't know what you haven't done.
Sorry. You know what?
I'm just gonna get a drink by myself
while I wait to be surprised.
I'm gonna be surprised
if I don't throw him in the pool.
Okay, let's see what we have here.
Yes. Um, how about the birds?
Well, here's something
we haven't done, I don't think.
Ahh!
- Oh, my God!
- Holy shit.
This is why I don't golf.
Everybody's a fuckin' lunatic.
Emma?
I need to see the book!
Oh!
Emma?
Noah!
Ahh!
Puta madre.
No, no, no, no! Qué haces? Qué haces?
Shh, shh!
Emma?
Baltasar Frías.
Murray Thompson.
Time hasn't been too kind to us.
No, it has not.
What are you doing here?
I'm looking for Emma.
How do you know Emma?
- You go first.
- No, you go first.
- You came in last.
- Somebody just speak.
I got a long, disturbing message
from some woman named Emma.
She believes that Violet was searching
for something called Pasaje.
And now I guess
she's gone to look for it too.
No, no, no, no, no, no, no.
She found it?
This woman doesn't sound well.
- No, no, no, no, no.
- I was hoping to arrive here
- before she left, but I'm
- She's gone.
- No.
- Guessing I missed her.
It's all happening again.
Noah asked me for her this morning,
and now they're both gone.
Then I'll go find them.
No, you can't.
The only man who knows how to get there
is dead because of me.
- I'm sorry?
- Yeah, that's a long story
filled with shame and regret and pain,
and we don't have time for that.
Well, then it's a good thing
she told me how to get there.
All we need is a ride.
Hi, Mr. Thompson.
Uh, I don't know
if this hotline is real,
but, um, my name is Emma Reed,
and you don't you don't know me.
But I'm here in Akumal
at the Bahía del Paraíso,
and a few days ago, I found a cell phone
that belonged to Sam Lawford.
And, uh, yesterday, my husband
found Violet's phone.
Uh, it's wild.
It's been a really strange week
and a long night,
and I haven't slept much,
and honestly, I'm I'm a little bit
losing my grip on reality,
but I have some good news,
which is that I know
where Sam and Violet were going.
They were searching
for something called Pasaje.
And it's this kind of underground room
that exists outside of time,
and Violet thought that she could see
her mom again there.
And now, uh, I'm about
to look for it myself.
So I I wanted to j
Sorry about that. Your phone cut me off.
Sorry. Uh, sorry. Uh, moving on.
Um, and you might want
to take notes here, I think.
Okay, so to find this Pasaje thing,
you enter the jungle at Parque
de Corazones Degollado,
and then you hike straight in
for exactly 13.5 kilometers
until you find a very large
clearing of tall grass.
Now, this is where it gets very tricky,
because somewhere near the clearing
is this cluster of rare pink fungi,
but the fungi doesn't grow year round.
But when it does grow, though,
it's always within 30 meters
of the underground entrance
to Pasaje.
And, um, I know that this sounds
like I'm totally full of shit.
But, uh, all the details
are in the last chapter
of this book called
"La Desilusión del Tiempo."
And now so the writer of this book,
he took Violet and Sam there
and he's dead now.
The writer is the writer's dead.
And anyway, I
Sorry, again.
Anyway, yes.
So the yeah, the author died,
and that was fucking horrific
To see.
It really puts shit
into perspective, you know?
My own life. My own mortality.
Um, sorry.
Sorry, I'm
I'm turning this into a therapy session.
This isn't about me.
This is about Violet and Sam.
I just I think I was falling in love
with the idea of Violet and Sam
because they were
at that time in their life
when everything is so meaningful,
and the highs are, like,
so fucking high, you know?
And who doesn't want to go back in time
to that first love,
to be young and dumb and
You know, I'm not saying
that your daughter
is dumb, of course.
I just I just think
that's why we love "Titanic"
and "Romeo and Juliet" so much.
But then we forget
how fucking low the lows are.
Romeo and Juliet die,
and the "Titanic" sinks.
The highs are never as high again,
but the lows just keep getting lower.
- Here, I can help.
- Oh. Thank you.
Uh, are we lost?
No, no.
Look, we'll find it in the morning.
It doesn't make sense to look for it
while it's dark, you know?
Uh-huh.
- Are you hungry?
- Yeah.
Maybe we should, like, hunt, right?
- You know how to hunt?
- No.
- Do you?
- I do not. No.
Fuck. Sam.
How long can we go without water?
I think they say, like, three days.
That's it?
But we're small, so maybe
Maybe that means we can go longer?
Yeah, okay.
You want to go back, don't you?
No. No, no, no.
I'm sorry. I'm okay.
I think if we can't
find it in the morning,
then we should probably
And in the end,
everything just floats in the middle.
Maybe that's the disappointment of t
Time! Disappointment of time.
Or disillusionment of time.
I fuck. I don't know.
I don't I don't know what I'm saying.
This is kind of fucked up,
but, um, my husband Noah
is asleep in the other room,
and I'm not telling him
that I'm going into the jungle,
because he would try to stop me.
He treats me like I'm this
delicate little kid
who can't take care of herself.
And, um, you know, he hasn't
always been like that.
We took this vacation to celebrate
our wedding anniversary.
It's been ten years.
And, um, the entire process
has made me realize
that my future
won't be as good as my past.
Emma?
- I drink more now.
- Emma!
Like, I get home from work
and I pour a drink
before I even say hi to Noah.
And now, like, here,
with the drinks and the pool
And then half my tooth
broke off by the lazy river,
and the other half
is fucking killing me.
Um oh, my God.
Here's a dim realization
I think that I just made
in this moment, which is that vacation
is kind of like life.
It's fun at first,
and you try new things, right?
And you're like,
new foods, new experiences.
The sex with your partner is more fun.
And then at a certain point,
you're just so fucking annoyed
with them.
And you've done all the excursions
and you've tried all the food
and you get bad indigestion
and you're too sore and too lazy
and hungover to do anything but watch
shitty true-crime shows
in your hotel bed,
and then after a while,
you just want to go home.
But then you get home, and it isn't
quite as good as you remembered,
so you just want to go back on vacation.
Sorry. I'm done.
And I don't I don't even know
if you're gonna, uh, hear this.
- Oh, fuck.
- You have a good day.
What are you doing here?
Oh, hey. It's good to see you too.
You called in a fucking helicopter?
No, how would I do that?
Ah! That was incredible!
- Hi!
- Ha, we found you too.
- Hi!
- Double surprise!
Thanks, Abigail. Great pilot.
Ooh, timber.
I did not think that this
morning would end up like this.
So many adventures. Thank you, Baltasar.
- That's mine.
- Smile.
Is that really a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich?
Oh, no, just peanut butter.
And then these three thank you.
These three one, two, and three
They come chasing after us
in a golf cart.
And I'm thinking that maybe
the helicopter was on fire,
or maybe we were gonna get hijacked.
By the way, we heard about the Pasa-ha.
I guess we'd all love to find
some room outside of time.
But I'm too afraid to crawl
down in some mole hole
to go underground.
Maybe it's worth it
that you face your fears,
you know, to see what's down there.
Well, what's down there
is a bunch of bullshit,
so I'll just stay up here.
- Stop, stop, stop.
- Anyway
Can I talk to you for a second, please?
- Mm-hmm.
- It's whatever.
Some people believe in God.
Other people believe in magical rooms
suspended in time.
Oh, boy. That can't be good.
Luna says, um, they are
in a very specific stage,
you know, called, um,
la pubertad de matrimonio.
The puberty of marriage.
- Ooh.
- Nothing worse than puberty.
Like, you didn't think
it'd be cool to, like,
leave leave a note
or or anything at all?
I don't need you to rescue me.
No, I'm not here to rescue you.
Noah, I'm going to go
in there if I find it.
- Mm-hmm.
- There's no stopping me.
- No, no, you you
- There's no
- Yeah.
- Talking me out of it.
Yeah, no, you've made it
crystal fucking clear, so
Then why are you here?
Why are you here?
You don't care about any of this.
- You don't believe in any of it.
- No, you know what?
- But I I do care about you.
- Mm-hmm.
And I'm not gonna just stand by
and let my wife
walk into a jungle alone.
Are you kidding me?
I am not built like that.
You know this.
Like, I'm I'm not sure what's
What's next for us after all this shit,
but in the meantime, we're married,
and this is what I signed up for.
- And if you could just be
- Don't teach me a lesson.
If you could just well,
maybe you need to learn one
You talk to me like I'm five years old.
- You are so selfish.
- How am I being selfish?
If you could just take my
feelings into consideration
I'm out here in the middle
of fucking nowhere
- Oh, don't oh, my God
- I'm doing all this
I'm sorry, I'm just gonna go over there.
- That's a fantastic idea.
- Excuse me?
The king of giving great marital advice.
Can I have a sandwich?
What's that supposed to mean, Ted?
I love you, but you are
the worst one of all to do this.
I think you you should go.
It would be very interesting
to see that human interaction.
- Mm. I see what you're doing.
- Don't egg him on.
Oh, there is no signal anywhere.
You're putting words in my mouth.
- What's going on?
- Where am I fucking up?
Your friends are getting a divorce.
This is 100% for you.
- And you coming here
- This is for you.
- Is 100% about you.
- Oh, Go you know what?
You haven't thought about me
since you left this morning.
- I did.
- And that sucked.
- Oh, you did?
- Mm-hmm.
Okay, when?
I did think about you this morning,
and I decided that I need
something that is mine.
Okay, like wha like,
the two missing kids?
- No.
- Like, that's what you
Then what?
We're supposed to be
two separate people.
We are not separate people anymore.
- Are we?
- We do everything together.
- Everything is always together.
- Okay
We don't even have
our own friends anymore.
- We're like this
- Is that bad?
Yeah, it is bad.
Wow. Wow, Em.
You literally talk about marriage
like it's a fucking problem.
It is a problem.
Wow, you know
You know what sucks?
Like, I don't I don't
I don't know if you
even like me anymore.
That that sucks.
Like, that like, do you want
to be married to me anymore,
or, like, nah?
Okay.
Okay. Good news.
I'm catching a whiff
of something pungent
coming from the west.
So I'm gonna check that out
before nightfall.
You guys set up camp in the trees.
Never go into the tall grass after dark.
Never.
I've only got three tents,
so you might want to think
about getting along at some point.
Well, I think the Teds are out of here.
Ooh, could we get a quick pic
by the helicopter?
Okay, okay. I got it.
Who's taking it? Ted.
- I got it.
- No, let Ted do it.
That's funny.
Safe to say you're gonna
re-up for another seven years?
I'd give it 50/50.
How 'bout you?
Okay.
Got it. Smile.
"Follow nature's call to the pink fungi.
"53 meters northwest
is a hidden entrance.
"But hold your palm above it,
and you will feel heat.
And only then will
the arrow of time appear."
Nature calls.
Could be an "Ace Ventura" reference.
Mm.
Okay, so, um, Pasaje.
Let's say it's real.
What is a room outside of time?
Iberra Iberra says it takes you
where you need to be, right?
Mm-hmm.
Well, uh, I'm 99% sure
that Iberra was full of shit.
Yeah, well, maybe, but still, like,
what is outside of time
versus inside of time?
It seems like Pasaje is
about reliving a moment, no?
Or having a glimpse into the future.
So where do you want to go?
Where do you want to be?
No one?
Okay. Me me again.
Luna, do you remember when I turned 35?
I was very clear
I didn't want to have a party.
You know, I was feeling very old.
So that day, I was feeling miserable.
And I was I was
so depressed, at 10:00 p.m.,
I was in my bathroom
crying, taking a shit.
And suddenly, I hear
a knock on the door.
And Luna and Alex,
these fucking assholes,
stole cases of fireworks
Whoa!
And and a kilogram of weed
from this crazy spring break party.
And just with that, I had, um,
the best night of my life.
Salud.
Yeah.
So what about you guys?
It's a beautiful night.
Are are you gonna share anything?
Yeah, okay.
Okay. Uh
Yeah, you know, if any
of this shit is real,
I, uh I think I would
I would want to go a year from now.
Why?
Just want to see
how Emma and I are doing.
How do you think we'll be doing?
For the first time in my life,
I have absolutely no idea.
And that terrifies me.
Nature called, hmm?
Did you find the pink fungi?
I didn't see anything.
We'll have better luck in the morning.
- Good night, guys.
- Yeah, man.
Everybody says this is garbage,
but not my family.
First Rita,
then Violet carried it everywhere.
I must have thought it was
just another vampire
or wizard one.
Should've paid more attention.
I'm so sorry.
Yeah, me too.
Do you mind if I ask
what happened to your wife?
You don't have to tell me.
Uh
I'm sorry. That's
- No, no, no.
- Invasive.
- Started in her breast.
- Spread to her brain.
Took its time.
I'm so sorry.
And I'm so sorry that I, like
Oh, I just keep saying I'm sorry,
and I know that that's not, you know
I know that's not helpful.
That must have been impossible.
Yeah, strange time
Mm-hmm.
To go from husband to caregiver.
I mean but we had time together.
My dad died when he was 45,
so anything over that,
for me, is a bonus.
I mean, if that's what tells you
how long you're gonna live, I'm screwed,
'cause my grandmother is 96,
and that's, like
Way too much time to fill.
I don't I don't feel that way.
This is this is weird.
I I'm obsessed with trying to remember
the last thing that I said to Violet.
I can I can picture where we were.
I I I can see the scene.
But there's no sound, you know.
Probably something so stupid and banal.
I'm I'm just not
I'm just not sure if I can
remember, uh, her face.
Are you okay?
Um
Noah and I tried to, uh, start a family
a couple years ago, and it didn't work.
Um
everyone treats you like you're broken
when they hear about it.
But, um,
I I
I refuse to be defined by it.
You know, we're so much more
than what happens to us
Right?
No.
Sorry.
We're not.
I didn't get to see her face.
Um, my
Daughter.
I, uh, chose not to.
And I think that
maybe if this, uh,
thing is real,
maybe I can.
Maybe you can see Violet again.
No.
No, that's bullshit.
You don't get to say that.
What?
Good night.
Oh, fuck. Sorry. Are you okay?
- Yeah.
- You okay?
Yeah.
This is actually
kind of hard for my neck.
Oh, do you want me to move up?
Sure.
There. This is not
Maybe we should go back to the side.
- Yeah.
- Okay.
What's wrong?
I just don't like people touching me.
- Oh, sorry.
- Yeah.
Sam, could you do a little less tongue?
My bad I was just kind of
matching what you were doing.
- We don't have to do any tongue.
- Yeah, I'd rather not.
I'm sorry. It's not
- Yeah, I'm I'm tired.
- I'm so tired.
Hey.
Do you do you want
to just maybe go to bed?
Yeah, let's let's sleep.
Okay.
- Okay.
- Cool.
- Good night.
- Good night.
Are you awake?
Mm-hmm.
You you asked me earlier if I miss it,
and I I miss this.
I
Emma, I just want to go home.
Em, you okay?
Sweetheart, what's wrong?
Oh, fuck, your mouth.
- My tooth hurts.
- Oh, Lord. Emma, Emma
- And my whole body is hot.
- It's hot outside.
And my jaw is stiff. Am I gonna die?
We gotta get you to a dentist.
Where are we gonna find a dentist?
- We have to leave.
- No, I can't leave.
We have to leave
and get you to a dentist.
This is significant, yes.
Emma, I want you to be happy,
but that tooth is
gonna have to come out.
Yeah, or what's left of it.
I'm fine. I'm fine. I'm fine.
No, you're not fine at all.
- It has to come out right now.
- Mm-mm.
Okay, I can't get any
fucking reception out here.
What's the worst thing
that could happen?
You could get an infection
in your brain and die.
- Mm!
- Okay, besides me,
who's the fastest runner here?
To find cell phone reception?
- It's me. It's me.
- Oh, no. It's me.
So I'm gonna get Abigail,
and I'm gonna get you a dentist.
I'm gonna get you out of here, Emma!
Wow, she's she's really fast.
No, no. I'm not gonna leave.
Do you have pliers?
Oh, no.
Get it over with.
- What no, no, no. No, no, no.
- We gotta get you to a doctor.
Noah, you wanted
to come here and help me.
Fucking help me.
Noah.
I got her. Now go.
- You sure you want to do this?
- Let's go.
- All right.
- Do it.
All right, it's gonna be okay.
- Just do it!
- It's gonna be okay.
- Counting down from ten.
- From five.
- From five
- Cinco
- Four
- Cuatro
- Three
- Tres
- No.
- Two
- Dos
- One.
- Just do it.
- Oh, no!
Oh, shit.
Yes!
Yes!
Yeah!
You did so good.
It worked!
My God.
Hi.
Hey.
How's your mouth?
- Oh, it's good.
- Okay.
It's much better, actually.
Good.
I passed out too.
- You did?
- Yeah, I did.
All right.
Murray drained the pus, and I
I went down.
Well, I guess we don't
have to hash it out
about the tooth, huh?
Yeah.
It's warm.
Well
Here we are at last.
So what now?
We go in.
