The Unsettling (2019) s01e02 Episode Script

The Hand That Pulls the Strings

Previously on "The Unsettling" Try to keep an open mind.
I've placed a few of the other fosters there.
Welcome to your new home.
- Lorazepam.
- Those are mine.
For panic attacks.
- Maya's obsessed with Isaac's son.
- We're just friends.
- Dominic is Fia and Jason's bio son.
- This is not your house.
Fia and Jason are a part of New Purity religion.
- Holy of one.
- Holy of all.
Something's not right about this.
Give it time.
Everything will settle into place.
This is your home.
- Becca, sweetie, are you taking - Yes, I've taken my pills.
They're for anxiety, not hallucinations.
There were hundreds of maggots.
And I saw something in the mirror.
- What if I'm just like my mom? - I know you.
This is a pattern.
You build these imaginary worlds in your mind.
I know what I saw.
I'm going to make you an appointment with Dr.
Green to check your medication.
- You don't believe me.
- That's not what I said.
I just want what's best for you.
- Okay.
- Good.
Becca, you're not just like your mom.
- Make it stop.
- I think it's cute.
Quit encouraging him.
There she is.
Thought you were trying to avoid family chore day.
We have a motto here in New Purity.
The family that chores together soars together.
He's got all kinds of little gems like that one.
When I was your age, my parents put me to work at 5 a.
m.
feeding the chickens and shoveling the horse stalls.
All that sun and sweat taught me what was important in life: contributing to the greater good.
It's true.
Labor lifts the soul, and strengthens the hand.
That's very good, Maya.
Hey, you okay? Last night was pretty rough.
Probably just new house jitters.
I can't imagine what you've been through in your life with your own family, other foster homes, but don't worry, Fia and I are here for you for anything.
Thanks.
Why don't you get started with the dining room table? I thought I'd cleaned those guys all up.
Got some bad meat at the market the other day.
You okay? Yeah, I just need to step outside for some air.
It's beautiful, isn't it? You can see all the way to the mountains.
No sirens, no smog.
Compared to the streets, it's paradise.
That must have been horrible.
I'm sorry.
It brought me here to a family that cares about me, which is something I've never had before.
I haven't had that in a long time either.
Sometimes I feel guilty by how blessed I am now.
Connor, how many times have I told you I'd better go save him.
Fia's very meticulous about her things.
I'm gonna go say hi to the chickens.
Hey, could I ask you something? What's with all the chores? They didn't take us all because we're cute.
There's a lot of work to be done.
Aren't there child labor laws against that sort of thing? When I was about 12, I was placed in this house.
The mom was an alcoholic, the dad took painkillers.
I got one bologna sandwich a day.
This is like living with "The Brady Bunch.
" Connor, weird shit has been happening.
I'm hearing things, seeing things.
Like what? There was a message carved in one of the drawers in my room.
- It said, "Stay away.
" - That was probably just Sarah.
- Telling Fia to stop snooping.
- That's not all.
- You're probably right.
- No, Becca, tell me.
It's nothing.
Are you two flirting? Because I've seen hotter chemistry between the stiffs at Gran's stroke rehab center.
- She's your sister.
- It's not like that.
Shut up.
- Incest is the best.
- It's not incest.
- Nothing's gonna happen.
- You gave her the tour of the house.
- To make her feel at home.
- At home, in your pants.
Why can't I just be friendly? It wouldn't hurt you to try it.
Thanks, Mom.
- Hi.
- Hey.
Did you get a chance to watch the sermon I sent you? Ah, damn.
I mean, darn.
Sorry.
Not yet.
No pressure.
And you can curse around me.
I've heard a lot worse than damn.
I share a room with Nadine.
- I get nervous around you.
- Why? Because you're such a good person.
So, what's the sermon about? Just a reminder to be kind to yourself.
You're a really good person, too, Silas.
Good morning, Silas.
Please remind your father that brunch is at 11.
Appreciate you helping out since school's still closed.
Please, I don't mind.
Besides, you have the better snacks here.
Ow, shit.
You okay? Let me see.
Oh, you should get that cleaned up.
Soap and water should do.
- Who's that? - The creepy foster come to life.
What? It's true.
Locals call him the Ash Man.
Why? He's the crematory operator at the local funeral parlor.
He turns dead bodies into ash for a living.
He thought, "You know what would be a fun job? Burning human flesh.
" - He's never bothered any of us.
- Not yet, anyway.
- What's he doing on the property? - Looking for water.
So you're just gonna act like nothing happened last night? Keep your voice down, please! Are you afraid they're gonna find out that the Elder's son is a sinner? - It was a one-time mistake.
- I counted three times.
I like you a lot.
But you know how my father is.
In front of them, acting like I'm into Maya makes my life easier.
It doesn't mean I have to like it.
When I turn 18, I'm getting the hell away from this town, from my father.
We can finally be together.
And no more secrets.
You promise? Hey, buddy.
Are you sure you don't wanna join the rest of us? We still got some yardwork to finish up.
What do you say? You wanna be a part of the team? - She's not on my team.
- Who? Becca? She shouldn't be here.
Sarah might still come back.
Sarah's gone.
Sarah ran away.
Becca is a part of this family now, and you're going to have accept that.
Hey.
You okay? I heard pounding from behind the door.
Someone's in there.
It's padlocked shut.
- I think I'm gonna go lay down.
- Becca! You can trust me.
I was like you.
Every time I started at a new house, I put my guard up.
Find somebody you can talk to.
- I've got Lorraine.
- Yeah, but she's not here.
- Well, think about it.
- Thanks.
- What's the meaning of this? - I'm sorry? This letter opener from the drawer in our bedroom was under your pillow.
Dominic said he saw you come into our bedroom yesterday.
- This is unacceptable, Becca.
- I've never seen that letter opener.
We do not sneak around this house.
We do not steal.
And we don't lie! I never took anything out of your bedroom.
Don't you find it suspicious that he came to you saying he saw me in your bedroom, then you find a letter opener under my pillow? I know I'm new to this family.
And you don't have any reason to believe me over your own son, but he hasn't liked me since I got here.
What would I do with a letter opener anyway? What I care about is the two of you learning to get along.
You're brother and sister.
You're family.
We didn't finish cleaning the front porch.
You two can do it now.
Hey, can we just start fresh? Call a truce? Your mom wants us to act like brother and sister.
- You're not my sister.
- I know that.
I just think You're not my sister! You'll never replace Sarah.
Tell me, Becca Has faith been a part of your life? To be honest, no.
I've bounced around my fair share of homes, and religion has never been something I've latched on to.
That makes sense.
Faith is quite literally the act of being sure.
So why would you be sure of anything? Fia and I were both raised in the light of New Purity.
Our parents were, too, isn't that right, Gran? My great grandfather purchased this ranch in 1885.
He dreamed of building a home for a community, for the brothers and sisters who believed in the teachings of the Pyre.
My great grandparents were among the first to join him.
The Lord of the Pyre has blessed us many times over.
Open yourself to enlightenment and you will be blessed in purity.
I didn't always know what I believed either.
But once I released my will to the light, I've never looked back.
Jason is still at the beginning of his journey.
A fledgling.
I don't know about that, Isaac.
I've found my wings by now.
I'd be careful if I were you.
One should never attempt to fly too soon.
Becca, are you okay? - Didn't like Fia's ham? - You have no idea.
I remember my first brunch with Elder Isaac.
I'm pretty sure I made it to dessert before I had to get some air.
He's not a bad guy.
He and Fia are the heads of the congregation.
Jason isn't quite as devout.
But he wants to make Fia happy.
Tell me what's going on.
I won't say anything to Jason or Fia.
The ham, there was blood pouring out from it.
I know, it sounds crazy.
Yes, it does, all of it.
Last night, I saw a sink full of maggots and some woman in the bathroom covered in blood.
Something's haunting me.
Or I'm losing my mind.
We're gonna figure this out together.
- Really? - Yeah.
I'm not gonna let you have all the fun.
This is my jam.
We're gonna paranormal activity the shit out of this place.
Thank you.
