The Voice US (2011) s07e04 Episode Script

The Blind Auditions, Part 4

1 After six seasons of doing this, I still love the mystery of the blind auditions.
Right before somebody starts singing, there's, like, this concern for them because I've never had to do what these people are doing.
It's a crazy thing to just listen to the tone and try to feel the spirit of the person.
And just one of us turning around could completely change their lives.
Uncondition-a-a-a-a-ally Last night on "the voice" We told you to come back, and you're here.
That's cool.
I loved your voice.
It was like an angel.
I think that you're completely unique to this competition.
You fit perfectly into my team.
I heard a guy who knew that it was his moment.
I know what to do with that.
This is the first time in the history of "the voice" I've ever said this.
But I think maybe Blake would be great for you.
Hey, you're my boo.
Here's where the teams stand after night 3.
Pharrell.
Pharrell scored three unique singers, bringing his total to 8.
My plan this season is to have as much versatility as possible, because the competition is crazy.
Aah! Gwen added two pop artists and a returning reggae singer, giving her 7 overall.
At this point, I'm just really looking for someone that's gonna have some different kind of a way of singing.
Yes! Blake picked up 3, bringing his total to 7.
My strategy is go out here and find the best singers and look for a star Put all genres aside.
And Adam landed three amazing female vocalists, but still trails overall with 6.
Team Adam is an eclectic bunch of interesting people.
I don't have one person that sounds like the other.
Tonight the greatest singers in the country will take their shot on the "voice" stage.
Gravity is working against me And with the teams filling up, they'll lay everything on the line Until the end To impress our coaches.
Yes! Wow.
Wow.
When we see that quality in somebody Coming out here like it was their last time, we know that that's how determined they are to make it.
Yeah.
I've been dreaming for an artist like you.
I want you on my team so bad.
I'm on my knees.
Give her one of these.
I'm giving her one of these.
You hit a note that was so beautiful, it was just mind-blowing.
She loves you.
I know you! Oh, my God! It's the most exciting night of the blind auditions yet.
What? Let's get some popcorn, some refreshments, and enjoy.
It's night 4 of the blind auditions at universal studios Hollywood, and the coaches can't wait to get started.
I was just getting rid of my smile headache from yesterday, 'cause I laughed so hard.
This is special I have to say.
I've never experienced anything like this, ever.
Since y'all are in such a good mood, how about today, y'all don't hit your buttons? I'm gonna be really, really, really picky today.
You know, it'll be a fight to the finish.
Let's keep it clean today, guys.
Okay.
Yeah.
Here we go.
As our coaches get settled, let's meet the night's first artist, 15-year-old katriz Trinidad.
I was born in San Diego, but my parents moved here from the Philippines to have a better life.
Hey, mom, what is that? - Looks good.
- Yeah.
I live with 8 family members My mom, my dad My brother, my sister, my grandma, my grandpa, and my auntie.
It can get really hectic and crazy, but I love them to death.
You can do it.
Like this? Ah! Those people that knows about music tell her that she has a special voice, but Well, then, mom.
Stand up for love When I was 8 years old, I joined my first competition.
And since I started competing, I've won 14 championships.
And in 2013, I was crowned miss teen fiesta filipiniana.
It was the great opportunity to represent the Filipino-American youth, and the experience does help me grow as a performer.
I was very determined at a young age because I fell in love with music.
I'm not only trying to win "the voice.
" I am trying to get a mentor that will help me throughout my career.
These coaches are superstars, so it's pretty crazy for me to experience something like this.
I know that it will be nerve-racking, but if I just go out there and do my best, that's all I need to do.
Oh, my God.
At last My love has come along my lonely days are over the night I looked at you I found a dream that I could speak to a dream that I can call my own I found a thrill to press my cheek to a thrill that I never, never, never known you smi-I-I-le Yeah! Oh, and then the spell was cast and here we are in heaven for you are mi-I-ne at LA-a-st yeah, yeah, yeah at last Wow.
Wow.
Wow! Wow.
Wow.
Let me let me stop.
Hold up.
Hold up.
I'm gonna I'm gonna get this party started.
That was incredible.
How old are you? 15 years old.
What?! Wow.
What's your name? What's your name? My name is katriz Trinidad.
Congratulations.
They are gonna lose their minds.
So Let's get some popcorn, some refreshments, and enjoy.
Pharrell's dying to go first.
I'm gonna let pharrell go first.
Pharrell can't even speak.
I never thought that I would find something that I usually look for from my own label Like, I've been dreaming for an artist like you all my career.
Thank you.
That means so much.
Gwen is the queen of awesome, and Blake knows about a song.
He he I'm a queen.
I'm the queen of something.
Just remember these words I want you on my team So bad, and I've never done this.
Thank you.
I'm on my knees.
Are we even here? I don't think so.
No, you're not.
Man, you know what? All of us, in the back of our minds, keep the hope alive that, somehow, we'll find someone who is just born to be a star.
Katriz, I think you could be that person I really do.
Thank you.
I mean, you're so different.
You truly are.
And let me take a second here just to say I've had a lot of luck with teenagers, and I've won this show several times before.
You deserve to win this thing.
You truly do.
Thank you so much.
Hi.
Hi.
You're so beautiful.
Gosh.
Thank you.
You are so cute.
I feel like you're almost like a perfect singer.
You started off so soft and controlled, and then you just ramped and ramped and ramped till the end, where you hit a note that was so beautiful, it was just mind-blowing.
And then to find out it's coming out of a 15-year-old voice It's hard to really take it all in.
I think one thing about your performance that I would change is to make it feel a little less rehearsed and a little bit more relaxed and just strip you down a little bit and undo the perfection and see what was there.
And that's what I would try to find if I work with you, definitely.
Thank you.
That was good.
Katriz, this is a tough one.
What are you do what does that say? Wait a minute.
What is it all the kids do now? Wait a minute.
I'm Give her one of these.
I'm giving her one of these.
Yeah.
All right, who you gonna pick? I just wanted to say I truly love all of you guys, and you guys are such inspirations.
I'm going to have to go with my gut and I'm going to pick pharrell.
And we're gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn we're gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn gonna let it burn, burn, burn, burn Katriz is special.
She's something that we scour the Internet for at my label.
I turned around because I heard a lot of control.
And then when you find out that she's 15, it's like, "what?" Thank you.
Good luck to you.
I thank this show for introducing me to her.
The fact that I got to have her on my team Today's a great day.
Pharrell is such an amazing artist, such a great performer, and I feel like I'll learn so much from him.
You got a really good one, pharrell.
Hey, she's amazing.
I'm actually jealous right now.
I'm gonna have the most fun with this show.
Coming up Already gone The competition heats up Whoa With the artists giving it everything they've got Oh, adeline, have mercy you don't wanna break my heart your voice is crazy.
Man, I need somebody like you on my team.
This is the guy I'm missing right now.
Oh, my God! And one performance that shocks Gwen.
I was not expecting that.
Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Our next artist is determined to stand out from the competition.
My name is Ethan Butler, I'm 25 years old, and I'm from Chicago, Illinois.
Growing up, my dad was a pastor and led the band on Sunday mornings, and so, for the first half of my life, I only heard gospel music.
In the last year and a half, I've really been pursuing music outside of the church, going out to bars and open Mikes, and it was just kind of like, "all right, this is what I want to do.
" When Ethan started singing secular music, I had to adjust to it first, but he's not doing really nasty stuff, so I appreciate that.
We pray that you bless our afternoon together.
In Jesus' name.
Amen.
Recently, I moved back with my parents.
I work at moody church in the radio ministry department.
I answer phones and process mail.
Work helps me pay my bills, but I would love to make music a full-time gig.
My sister faith she has cerebral palsy, hints of autism, and I think music was definitely one of those things that helped us connect a bit more.
You win my heart out when the rest of me is down I'm inspired by my sister very much so.
I love you.
For my blind audition, I will be singing "beneath your beautiful," and I'm dedicating my performance to her.
It's really about saying you're beautiful as you are, and you can do way more than you can imagine.
Whoo! Whoo! I know I need to grow.
And Blake is probably the one I would really want to work with because of the compassion that he really pours into his artists.
I don't want to go back home answering phones and processing mail.
There's so much more out there.
I want to experience that.
Yes! Yeah! Oh, he's got his guitar.
Yes.
Be awesome.
"Be awesome.
" You tell all the boys no makes you feel good yeah and I know you're out of my league but that won't scare me away oh, no Yes! Yes! Yes! Ahh! Would you let me see beneath your perfect? Take it off now, girl take it off now, girl 'cause I wanna see inside would you let me see beneath your beautiful tonight? Whoa, oh, oh I'm gonna climb on top your ivory tower I'll hold your hand I just wanna know would you let me see beneath your beautiful? Would you let me see beneath your perfect? Take it off now, girl take it off now, girl 'cause I wanna see inside would you let me? Whoa, tonight Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes! I know.
I know.
Yes! Okay.
Hey, man, I got to say one thing.
Yes.
I loved it.
I did this.
You did.
And then Blake turned around.
I'm like, "no big deal.
" And I'm, like, sitting here, and I was like, "pharrell and Gwen are looking at me a little bit.
" I'm not looking back, 'cause I'm like, "if I show them any enthusiasm right now, those buttons are getting pressed.
" So I was like, "hmm.
I don't know about this.
" And then the second it was over, I was like, "yes!" Yes! Yes! Yes! What's your name, man? Ethan Butler.
I love your style.
Thank you.
Like, you look so cute.
Like, I would wear that outfit The whole thing.
Yes! I'm just excited to see the old-school dudes go at it right now.
Yes.
Great voice, by the way, man.
Thank you.
Congratulations on on making it on the show.
I appreciate it.
You deserve to be here.
I appreciate that very much.
You were so lost in it.
And by the way, playing guitar like that and singing like that very difficult to maintain the pocket that he had the whole time Just so soulful, you know? And when I hear you sing, I think to myself, "I need this guy.
This is the guy I'm missing right now.
" And I'll stop for a second and let Blake talk, but then I'll talk again.
Okay.
Hey, man, I could tell that you're a musician.
Anybody that wears a guitar up that high like a necklace, it's like that's for a reason.
That's 'cause that's where it feels good.
Yeah.
Yes, exactly.
That's where the most comfortable, you know? Because when I wear it, it's, like, low, and I think it looks cooler.
Clearly, this isn't new to you, and you're more than ready for this competition.
Thank you.
That means a lot.
Yeah.
I'm dying to be a part of what you do.
I really feel like I got this one.
What are you talking about You feel like you got this one? I feel like what is he A slot machine or something? You're talking about he's a human being standing right here.
No, this collaboration, this connection.
No.
Man, you just be quiet over there, man.
So, what are some areas that you feel like I need some growth in? Vocally, you have a lot of control.
Mm-hmm.
I would say, sometimes, losing control in a good way would be a good thing for you.
Thank you.
I think that I would want to try to figure out who the actual artist is, because if we could figure that out together, then America's gonna start voting for you, and you're gonna be standing around here in the finale.
Okay.
So, who do you pick as your coach? I never thought I'd be here.
Okay.
I choose Adam.
Yes! Well, you can tell everybody I'm the man, I'm the man, I'm the man Ethan is kind of a breath of fresh air.
Yes! Yes! Want to go to the final with me? Yes! Hell, yes, man.
Hell, yeah.
It'll be awesome.
Sometimes when you hear somebody sing, you connect to it and get it and you want to be part of it 'cause you think you can really help nurture it.
So I just got that feeling, and I absolutely had to act on it.
Good luck to you, man.
Dang it, I can't believe I let him get away from me.
Yes! Yes! He's gonna be a threat to team Blake.
You guys are amazing Really, really funny.
I love the chemistry you have.
He and I are like ozzie and Harriet.
Ahhh! This is an amazing moment.
I'm thrilled.
I really am.
You in, dude! All this time, I thought I would go with Blake, but Adam really sold me in pinpointing different things that I could really grow in and work on.
Team Adam! Yeah! We got to do some sort of buddy show about being us, living in an apartment or something.
Let's do a road-trip show, like, somehow, we end up having to get a car together and go from New York to L.
A.
We could be like the new "duck dynasty," kind of.
Be the biggest show on TV.
Coming up, a singer from last season Coming back, there's a risk.
If they don't turn again, that's even more devastating.
Has one last shot to make it.
Welcome back to night 4 of the blind auditions.
Our next artist is a familiar face with something to prove.
People might remember me from last time.
I auditioned for season six, and I sang "stay" by Rihanna.
Want you to stay That was the biggest audience I've ever performed in front of.
you to stay I felt really nervous.
I wasn't quite ready.
Want you to stay Unfortunately, none of the coaches turned around.
You got to really not just sing the song.
You got to live this song.
Just keep strengthening, you know, your voice.
You got a shot at this, man.
And do me a favor.
Don't change when all the ladies start falling all over you, 'cause they're gonna come at you.
You're gonna get a lot of phone numbers, all right? But just take it easy.
After my blind audition, my friends and family would tell me, "great job.
You know, you need to go back.
" So I had a new determination.
I wanted to show them that I could do better.
Let's make it happen, buddy.
Thanks, dad.
Since last time, I've been asked to sing in fairs.
I got to sing at my prom dance.
The kids loved it, and everyone gave me tons of support afterwards.
My voice has gotten a little lower since last time, so I have a little deeper range.
I'm about 2 inches taller, so maybe that'll help.
This time, I'm doing "when you say nothing at all" by Alison krauss.
I chose this song because I can make it my own.
This song has a lot of emotion in it, so I hope that I can really bring that emotion good luck, buddy.
That Adam was talking about.
Go get 'em.
Coming back, there's a bit of a risk.
If they don't turn again, that's even more devastating.
So when I hit that stage, I just need to give it everything I got.
All right, buddy.
You got it.
You been there before.
You know what to do.
You got this.
Just relax.
Come on, Tanner.
It's amazing how you can speak right to my heart without saying a word you can light up the da-a-rk the smile on your face lets me know that you need me Come on, Blake.
the touch of your hand Come on.
Hit it.
Hit it.
Hit it.
Says you'll catch me if ever I fall you say it best when you say nothing at a-a-a-ll you say it best Ohh.
When you say nothing at a-a-a-ll You were freaking out.
I know you! I know you! Oh, my God! I know you! I was not expecting that.
Come on, man.
I told you.
Wow.
Yeah, he came back.
He was here last season.
Oh! That's so cute.
I thought that was a girl.
Well, look who's back.
Oh, it's so good to be here.
Thank you so much.
All right, remind everybody what your name is again.
My name is Tanner linford.
How old are you? I'm 17 years old.
Wow.
Your voice does not match your your body.
It's, like, wow.
I was like, "is that a girl?" And then I was like Once again, awesome.
Yeah, it kind of works for some of us.
Yes.
The improvement was really noteworthy.
There's so much potential.
And just congratulations, man.
I'm so happy for you.
Thank you so much.
So, what did you do to get this much better? Well, I took your guys' advice.
I've been taking any opportunities that I can take.
I got to sing at my junior prom at my high school.
And I've just been working on adding emotion.
And remember what else I told you? Ladies love the high voices.
Ladies.
Yes.
You know what's funny is I did think it was a girl singing, and I was like, "you know, the one thing I'm gonna tell her is she definitely poured her heart out.
" And you know what? As a young man, you did pour your heart out, and it's gonna take you very, very, very far.
Well, thank you so much.
It was very, very clear.
Thank you.
I heard two things that kind of had me on the fence.
There was a lower part that was a little bit wobbly, and that was nerves.
Mm-hmm.
And then, at the very last note, whenever I turned around, he went Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh That was the only two.
That was the emotion.
He was like, "oh, yes!" That was the emotion.
I know.
I loved it.
I loved it, man.
I thought you did a great job, man, and just awesome control, great pitch, and you're meant to be on team Blake.
Come down here, man.
Thank you so much.
Congratulations, brother.
Thank you so much.
Gonna be a lot of fun, man.
Hey, thank you.
Congrats, young man.
Congrats.
I love you.
Thank you, Gwen.
Victory.
Thank you.
Victory, buddy.
Congratulations.
I am absolutely beside myself right now that Tanner came back.
I mean, he's just now hitting his stride.
He's gonna change as a singer right before our very eyes.
It's gonna be a lot of fun to work with him.
Good one.
I am just so happy that Blake turned around.
I was kind of losing hope.
It was feeling a lot like last time, and then, that last second, oh, was just so great.
I guess the hard work paid off.
Watching people come back and make it That's pretty exciting.
Way to go, Tanner! Nice, Tanner! When he sang the last line, it was really, really nice.
Yeah.
He's got the emotion.
Yeah.
He knows how to pull them in emotionally.
He needs to just do scales every day.
Yeah.
If you could have heard what he did the first time versus now I mean, he's hitting that stride now, getting better.
Yeah.
This is my favorite moment of your performance On the final note, eyes are closed, and he just sort of peeked to see whose chairs are around.
Coming up Yeah More great performances When the thought of you came crashin' through And a four-chair turn That has our coaches under a spell.
What's your name, where are you from, and where'd you get that from? That guy's badass.
Freak of nature.
You will have a spotlight on you if you come to my team.
And Adam feels left out.
Don't be seduced by all this.
L.
O.
L.
No.
Welcome back to the blind auditions.
This next artist hopes his singing style will impress our coaches.
I'm roem baur.
I'm 37 years old.
I live in San Francisco.
My wife's a political organizer, and I stay at home during the day with the kids, and I play gigs at night.
Bake.
Bake.
When I was a kid, I remember my mom listening to, like, choral music and opera.
So when I was in college, I decided to pursue opera.
As a tenor, I started singing little solos in different languages, and I started winning, like, these little awards.
Opera was sort of taking me in one of two directions Now, you could either be a music teacher, or you could be an opera singer.
But I didn't really see myself with, like, the big horns on my head.
That foundation and that training had given me a voice that very much would translate to rock 'n' roll.
I did a lot of open Mikes.
I did some house concerts.
I got invited to play during South by southwest.
Things started to really take off with my career.
123.
123.
Yay! My wife and I we've been married four years.
We have two beautiful children.
As a team, we decided that I would just do music.
Good luck.
Yeah.
Good one.
But I've never really had any mentors when it comes to rock 'n' roll.
Bye, guys.
Being here and being helped by some of these great songwriters, producers, singers would just be everything.
I'm singing "pretty woman.
" Roy orbison was the first person that I heard and thought to myself, "that's what I sound like.
" I'm here.
This is the biggest stage.
If I turn a chair today, I know that I've arrived.
Daddy.
Come on.
There he is.
This is incredible.
Come on, buddy.
Oooh, oh ohhh pretty woman, walking down the street pretty woman, the kind I like to meet pretty woman I don't believe you you're not the truth no one could look as good as you mercy pretty woman, yeah, yeah, yeah pretty woman, look my way pretty woman, say you'll stay with me because I need you be mine Toni-I-I-I-ght but wait what do I see? Is she walking back to me? Yeah, she's walking back to me ohh, ohh pretty woman It's all right, babe.
Hey, man, what's your name? Roem baur.
Listen, man, Roy orbison He's kind of one of the greatest ever.
Yeah.
There was something almost kind of too close to what he did, and I-I wish it had maybe contextually been something slightly different so I could get away from From the Roy orbison "pretty woman" and and hear more you.
I felt like he was trying to match Roy's vibrato even.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I think it was throwing me off.
I felt like you chose influence over individuality, and that's what we're looking for.
We're looking for people who have something that's distinctively different, that stands out, but you kept it in this box.
And so your next time around, you know, sing something that's gonna allow us to see who you are as a person.
Thank you very much.
Yes, sir.
I thought roem's voice was really interesting.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
It's an honor.
Thank you.
But I think it wasn't unique enough.
Now that my team is really starting to, like, come together, I'm starting to get really picky.
Nice job out there, roem.
Great job.
You did a great job.
Yay! Daddy! Yay! Arlo turned his chair that's for sure.
You're so good at, like, getting people reinspired again I know.
If no one turns around kind of thing.
I never heard someone be so good at that part.
Yeah, nobody's ever been that way.
That's super kind of you.
Oh, you're great.
Coming up, an artist who's experienced loss My mom just fell to the ground.
I remember just repeatedly screaming to her, "wake up!" Bares her soul on the "voice" stage.
So I'm already gone And later, Adam has a front-row seat I'm really happy to be a spectator for the incredible bloodbath.
As pharrell takes on the king of country.
This is a for-real singer back here, not a pharrell singer.
Pharrell, if you pull this off, you'll be my personal hero.
Welcome back to "the voice.
" Let's see if this next artist, 29-year-old Jean kelley, has what our coaches are looking for.
My dad was obsessed with bluegrass music, and my mom loved Elvis Like '50s and '60s pop.
So I got, like, the best of both worlds, and eventually, I sort of came into my own.
My mom would always encourage me to sing in the car, and I would sing so loud, she'd have to roll down the windows.
But she kept wanting me to do it.
She was always saying, "I'm gonna be a stage mom.
You're gonna be famous one day.
" Everything really changed the summer before I started middle school.
My mom, dad, sister, and I were headed on a family vacation, and we decided to stop at a rest stop.
While my mom and sister and I were waiting for the restrooms, my mom just fell to the ground.
I remember just repeatedly screaming to her, "wake up!" 'Cause I was 12 and didn't know what was going on.
The congenital heart disease she'd been born with had caused her heart to fibrillate.
And they just told us she didn't survive.
And we had to get in the car and drive back home without her.
Love you, little one.
When my wife passed away, it was very unexpected, and we missed her immensely.
But instead of maybe feeling badly for ourselves, we helped each other get through it all and went forward.
I went to school for music business instead, but I just couldn't imagine spending the rest of my life working for other people, watching them live out my dream.
So I moved to Atlanta and started pursuing music.
I met this incredible group of people, we formed a band, and it was amazing.
But I just wanted to try my hand at something my own.
Getting a chair would mean I could see my childhood dream through, and that would make everything I've gone through in my life feel worth it.
There she is.
Whoo-hoo! There's Jean.
Remember all the things we wanted? Now all our memories are haunted we were always meant to say goodbye and even with our fists held high it never would have worked out right we were never meant for do-or-die no I didn't want us to burn out I didn't come here to hurt you now I can't stop I want you to know that it doesn't matter where we take this road someone's gotta go and I want you to know you couldn't have loved me better I want you to move on so I'm already go-o-o-ne I'm already gone there's no moving on oh, whoa oh, mmm I'm already gone Yeah! Holy crap! Well, she's wearing Yep.
That's not good for me.
She's mine.
What's your name? Jean kelley.
I love your voice.
I was on the fence about what you were capable of until you got to the end.
That high note.
Mm-hmm.
And, man, when you hit that note and held it that long yeah.
Oh, yeah.
That let Gwen and I both know this is a for-real singer back here not a pharrell singer, 'cause he didn't hit his button a for-real singer.
And, man, I need somebody like you on my team.
I truly, truly do you, now? Yes, I do now.
I feel like, in your tone, I can hear similarities in our voices, which was familiar and comforting for me.
And I pressed my button because, at the end when you had all that range A range that I don't have I was like, "wow," and you're gorgeous.
You have your own vibe, style.
We almost have the same hairdo.
If Blake, can you notice that? One side's back.
No, I didn't notice that.
Yeah.
I like this girl.
She's sassy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Well, I'll just turn my chair back around here.
Can I? How would you help me make it all the way to the end? Well, that's a good question.
Thank you.
And my answer to that is The same way I've helped three other people make it to the winner's circle at the end.
Honestly, these two are amazing coaches.
And they're two different directions, but they're two people who are equally as successful, and you just have to ask yourself, who will understand what your voice is trying to say to this world? It's time to decide.
Who do you pick as your coach? I have so much respect for all of your careers, both of you, and your music spoke to me growing up.
So, in a way, you coached me from a young age.
And I've watched you every season, and you're an incredible coach.
Um I pick Gwen.
I'm gonna swing from the chandelier Yes! High five? Yes! From the chandelier Jean kelley I think she has a cool voice, and she has a lot of confidence.
Team Gwen.
Yes! She definitely has her own Lane, and I can relate to that.
It's gonna be fun.
Thank you so much.
This is for you.
Oh, thank you.
I cannot believe she went with Gwen.
I wanted to be her coach.
Thank you so much.
Good luck, sweetie.
Good luck.
If she can capitalize on what she did at the end of that song and making her entire performances like that, she's gonna be somebody to contend with.
She's got some sass in her.
If she listens to you, she could be a strong contender.
I'm with you, pharrell.
Yeah, nice job, Jean.
Whoo! Nothing about this seems real.
I'm beyond myself right now.
Welcome to the show.
I'm so excited.
Great job.
Thank you.
Congratulations.
You sounded great.
My mom I can't even imagine her reaction.
She wouldn't have believed this, so I'm so proud right now.
Team Gwen! Coming up wow.
The coaches swoon That's a ladykiller right there.
That jacket is sweet! Over great talent I loved how sincere it sounded, and then you're cute.
She's a married woman! Welcome back to the blind auditions.
So far tonight, pharrell has added r&B artist katriz Trinidad, Adam has landed pop singer Ethan Butler, Blake scored returning pop singer Tanner linford This is for you and Gwen picked up confident pop artist Jean kelley.
Oh, thank you.
Let's see if our next singer can make a team.
My name is Chris jamison, I'm 20 years old, and I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Right now, I'm a college student at capital university in Columbus, Ohio.
On campus, I am the mailman.
What's going on, guys? Here's the mail.
Watch.
These ones are a little heavier.
I just like always doing something, being on my feet, and the fact that I make a paycheck at the end of the day is pretty nice, too.
I also joined the rock ensemble at capital.
I'd never played with a full band before, so it gave me the experience of having instruments behind me, and it's definitely helped me be prepared for "the voice.
" I'm a triplet, and we all grew up together.
We were always in the same class in elementary school.
It's just awesome.
Anything Chris is doing around the house, he's doing while singing.
Yeah, it can get a little annoying, but it's good singing, so you can't really complain.
I think I started singing when I was 4th grade.
We were driving in the car, and Beyoncé's song "listen" came on the radio, and I just started jamming along.
And my mom turned around and said, "you should go do something with that voice.
" When I was in 10th grade, I was able to audition for the high-school musical.
They were doing "beauty and the beast," and I got a name draw.
And I was like, "oh, cool.
What was it?" Like, I was so excited about what it was, and it was actually the pepper shaker.
But I put the hat on, and I was the best pepper shaker I possibly could be.
It's like a self-esteem type of thing, 'cause you think, you know, you're not good enough to get that lead role, but it gave me a lot more time to focus on the music that I wanted to create as a solo artist.
I've been performing for the past four or five years, and I've never had an opportunity like this.
I've watched the show, and I've always pictured myself on that stage.
I realize how talented all the four coaches are.
Pharrell just got off having one of the most amazing years in music.
He's the person that I think can really mentor me.
I think I can learn a tremendous amount Not just singing, but stage presence.
Whoo! Come on, Chris.
Let's go, buddy.
Come on.
Come on.
Come on, Chris.
Come on.
Come on, come on, come on.
Hey-y-y-y gravity is working against me No, no, no, no! and gravity What?! What the It wants to bring me down He got it! Oh, my gosh.
Congratulations! Oh, I'll never know oh, what makes this man with all the love that his heart can stand dream of ways to throw it all away yeah-h-h-h and gravity stay the hell away from me whoa and gravity, ohhh has taken better men than me and now, now, how can that be? Just keep me where the light is oh, whoa keep me where the light is yeah, yeah keep me where the light is You all right? Oh, my gosh.
Oh, I can't believe it.
He did it.
Oh, my God.
Man, man, man.
What's your name, where you from, and where'd you get that from? My name is Chris jamison, I'm 20 years old, and I'm from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
20 years old? Wow.
You're really cute really cute.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
This is crazy.
I've never done anything like this before.
What are your influences? I started out with John Mayer and Jason mraz stuff, and I just recently got into Allen stone.
I love Allen stone.
He's from Seattle! Yeah.
That guy's badass.
More soulful stuff.
I tried to sign him to my label, and he He didn't to be signed to my label.
Really? That's where I got that yeah Yeah, dude.
That part.
That scream was why I turned around, dude.
Thank you.
Thank you.
So wouldn't you want someone who's, like, in tune with your influences? 'Cause they're awesome, and so are you.
Thank you.
Thank you.
And you did a lot.
It was really emotional, and I love that.
I wouldn't want that to change for a second.
But criticism is important.
I get it every single day from a lot of people, especially Blake.
You did so much, if you were to do 85% of the stuff you that did, it would actually have a greater impact on an audience.
Okay.
So, I, for sure, can help you with that.
Thank you very much.
Wow.
Okay, I turned at the very last second, and the reason why it took me so long is because I only have a few more spots left, but I don't have a lot of guys.
And I always want to find a soul singer that has something that's really unique about them.
The singers that I love stick out in a different kind of way.
You know what I mean? Like, all of the technique is just mind-blowing.
And then the fact that I turn around and you look like that and you're 20 is, like Dude! Freak of nature.
She loves you.
If you worked with me, what I'd want to do is bring more of a signature sound out.
We'd have to discuss it, you know? Definitely.
That's a good point.
We're gonna discuss that, for sure.
We're gonna totally discuss that if you choose me.
Mr.
jamison yes.
One of the comments was it was a lot at different times, but I think you got lost in the moment, and you let it go.
And I wasn't mad at that.
I think that's awesome.
Ask any racecar driver, man they know when it's time to put the pedal to the metal, and that's what you did.
And if you were to come work on my team, we'd spend time figuring out what it is that you want to do for you because I'm interested, man.
Your voice is crazy.
Thank you.
I don't think you overdid it, either, because to me, you recognized what this particular mission was, and it was to get somebody to press their button.
It looks like you accomplished that mission to me.
I mean, it's yes.
And let me add this You'll have a spotlight on you if you come to my team.
Yeah, don't be seduced by all I'm just saying.
Don't be seduced by all this.
Okay.
It may not seem like the obvious choice to come with me, but it really is.
I mean, you know what I'm saying? Okay, okay.
I got to tell you something, man.
They've been yessing you a lot over there.
There's less value to me in saying, "everything you did up there was great," because I think that you can improve.
I want to help you take it to the next level.
Definitely.
I completely understand.
So thank you for hearing me on that one.
The wonderful thing is that you got four chairs, and you got to make a choice.
Okay.
I pick Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Is working against me Before the break, Chris jamison gave a standout performance Yes! No, no, no! Getting all four chairs to turn.
Now Chris has the tough decision of picking his coach.
I pick Adam.
Yes! Oh, whoa-oh, I got the feeling now got the feeling now There we go.
We're gonna do this.
Thank you so much.
That could have gone both ways for me.
He could have that could have backfired.
But I came at him with some good criticism, and he appreciated that, so I got a great singer.
It's all good.
Awesome, man.
When the chairs were turning, I said, "this isn't real.
" Like, "this is only something I watch on TV.
" I originally thought I was gonna go with pharrell, but hearing what Adam said, telling me what I can improve on That was the moment where I was like, "it's definitely Adam.
" Nice job, Chris.
Oh, my God! We're gonna put the campus mailman on hold, and we're gonna go on with the music thing.
I think it's the right time to do that.
What? What? What? Oh, my God.
Oh, my God.
Fair enough.
You know what? I am happy for Adam.
He's not been the four-chair king this year, and anytime he can get one and it can kind of build his ego back up, I'm happy to see him feel good about hisself.
I'll be here all week, everybody.
While Adam celebrates another victory, let's see if our next artist, 35-year-old Nashville veteran Craig Wayne Boyd, can get a chair to turn.
Growing up, I always knew I wanted to do music.
So after high school, I chose not to go to college, and really honed my skills in local rock bands.
Of course, as soon as I opened my mouth, though, all my friends were like, "um, "you have too much twang in your voice.
You're not rock you're country.
" His mother says he got the singing from me.
You'd have to give me a bucket to carry a tune.
Moving to Nashville from Dallas, Texas, with everything I owned in the back of my pickup wasn't easy.
I picked up a job valeting cars, and I was a staff writer for emi publishing.
I did not have any songs that made the radio, so I started to play shows all over, started doing showcases around Nashville.
I've been a full-time musician for a little over 11 years, and I've busted my head against the wall and gotten so close, and it's been right there for me to grab.
And you got circumstances have caused those things to not happen.
Music's always been so important to me, but now it's not only just for me.
There you go.
My son is 2 years old Jaxon Wayne Boyd, one of the coolest kids ever.
He's my little rock star.
Jaxon's mother and I were never married.
We had jaxon and then went our separate ways.
I am a full-time dad, but I'm also a full-time musician because I am still pursuing the dream of taking my music to the top.
If a chair turns for me, it's affirmation that my dream is possible.
For me to be able to take care of my son through music, I've got to go out there and give it 100%.
I hope those coaches can hear and feel my heart.
Get 'er done, boy.
There was a time I could drink my cares away and drowned out all of the heartache that hurt me night and day but then the thought of you came crashin' through Whoo! I'd have me one more because the whiskey it ain't workin' anymore well, I need one good honky-tonk angel to turn my life around that's reason enough for me to lay this old bottle down Yes! Well a woman that's warm and willing lord, that's what I'm looking for Oh! because the whiskey it ain't workin' anymore What is wrong with you?! Damn it! No, no Whoo! Whoo! Whoo, whoo, whoo! All right.
Yes! What? Wow.
What the hell is wrong with you? What's your name? My name is Craig Wayne Boyd.
First of all, that jacket is sweet! And I'm just so happy that you made it through.
I think you have a great voice.
But I'm really happy to be a spectator for the incredible bloodbath that's about to take place.
No, no, no, no.
No bloodbath.
But let me just say I pressed the button because I don't know the song, but there was a couple of ad libs in there where I was like, "wow.
It's, like, super soulful.
" How awesome is he that he's never heard a song, but he still knows when you're ad-libbing in it? But am I right? Yes.
Yeah.
That's how good you are.
You could just tell.
Like, and at times, you would growl into a run.
And I was like, "look at this dude.
" You said he growls when he has the runs.
Blake, you know, you take it right on the edge of inappropriate and just put it right in the toilet.
That's what he's talking about.
He's so bummed right now that I didn't turn.
But your voice Aren't you? I am.
I was gonna sing the last line to you.
Ohh, gosh.
Where you say you're from? I'm from mesquite, Texas, but I live in Nashville.
Oh, yeah? Pharrell, if you pull this off, you'll become my personal hero.
Man, listen, Travis tritt is probably 50% of the reason that I moved to Nashville, because he brought an edge to country music, and I think you do, too.
I think you've chosen the perfect song for you.
Let's teach America some country music.
What do you say? Go, Blake.
I pressed the button because you're that good.
The chances that you took on that song wow.
Let's turn "the voice" into a honky-tonk, man.
Okay.
So, who do you pick as your coach? Man.
I choose Blake.
You deserve that.
Great job, man.
Great job.
Man, thank you so much.
Congrats.
Man, thank you so much.
I appreciate it.
You deserve it.
You deserve it.
Great voice, man.
The things you were doing with your voice it's amazing.
I want any kind of artist that has a unique fingerprint and identity, so I pushed for Craig, but I think he went where he was supposed to go, and I think he's gonna be in great hands with Blake.
I picked Blake because he said his heroes were the same as mine.
It's been 35 years in the making.
And come on he wants to make it a honky-tonk.
Let's do it.
All I can say is, "wow.
" I just loved his tone.
Like, I like all that character.
- I'd I'd love that.
- He looks like skynyrd.
If he would have gone with me, we would have definitely been making a-a Southern rock album.
He does look like one of those van zant guys.
He does.
Here he is.
I found your guy here.
Yee-haw! I can't wait to get to my son and love on him and, hopefully, bring him out here to the show soon.
There's a guy that I can tell you has probably been playing for a long time, paying his dues, and that makes me really excited to get the chance to work with him and hopefully perform with him that'd be a lot of fun.
I'm a little bit stunned.
He just kissed me.
Coming up, an artist who comes from humble beginnings I grew up climbing coconut trees.
I mean, we made fire to cook.
Gets the chance of a lifetime.
Watching in the night ooh.
Yeah.
And later, more great performances Until the end And our coaches are all-in.
Ah! I was like, "oh, my God.
I got to hit it.
" You are an amazing, powerful singer.
And you're gonna be on a team.
Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Let's meet our next artist, who has come a long way to pursue his dream.
My name is tini grey, I'm 38 years old, and I am from the islands of Samoa.
I grew up climbing coconut trees, breadfruit trees.
I mean, we made fire to cook.
My dad he developed this reputation as a singer of the island.
He did travel a lot to play music.
You know, it was the only way he could support the family.
As a kid, I never really saw him, so he always discouraged us to be in the industry 'cause it was so hard.
So, I moved to Burbank, California, studied architecture.
I got my degree, and I was working in an architecture firm, but I couldn't sit still at the desk.
There was something else that I was yearning to do, and it was to play music.
So, right after architecture, I'd go downtown, and I'd play Hawaiian music.
It was just for fun.
I never really wanted to be, like, a working musician.
Where did you two meet? In Hawaii.
We met in Hawaii.
Yes.
We met at 15, right on waikiki.
You met at 15? 15.
Yep.
Wow.
And then you guys got married and had kids? Yep.
Yes, yes.
We got 12 years this year it'll make 12 years of marriage.
Oh, that's beautiful.
We have four beautiful kids three boys and one girl.
Then my parents said, "we all want to be near you guys," so they all moved up here to California with us.
My dad was playing music one night in long beach, and during his performance, he had a stroke.
I realized, if I lost him that night, there was nobody to continue his legacy.
I knew right there I needed to do this full-time and commit myself to it.
I was so happy for tini to step in and take over the music from me, and that's what's very important with me.
Mama.
For me to get a chair turned will help excel my career and hopefully support my family better.
This is a moment that is probably not gonna come around again.
Good luck.
Thank you.
I'm ready to go.
Baby hair with a woman's eyes but I can feel you watching in the night ooh.
That's all right.
Yeah.
When I feel cold, you warm me when I feel I can't go on, you come and hold me it's you and me forever Sara, smile oh and when you feel cold, I'll warm you it's you and me forever Sara, smile press the thing.
Come on.
Hit that.
Yeah I love it when ya smi-I-le whoo ooh won't you smile a while for me, Sara? Just a little bit, baby, for me Nice job, baby.
Nice job, baby.
What's your name? My name is tini grey.
I'm from the islands of Samoa.
Oh, wow.
Wow.
Cool.
Wow.
Your voice is amazing really amazing.
Thank you.
Thank you very much.
It's hard to say why I didn't press my button.
Maybe the chair's broken.
Yeah, I think it Yeah, I think it started off really strong, and then, when you got up into those high parts, it was a little wiggly.
I understand.
If there's one thing that's not as strong, it's the falsetto.
I think that might have been the thing that we were all hearing.
It's like, "oh, it's almost as good as the full voice, but not quite," and that's what kept me, anyway, from hitting my button.
Yeah.
Singing a song like that I mean, hall & Oates is like Yeah that's it.
Classic.
Like, that's a tough thing.
And you were conquering it, and then somewhere along the line, it got a little messed up.
But at the base of it, I think you got a great voice.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Agreed.
I agree.
Tini started off really strong, but I don't think he stayed as committed as he should have, and with only a few spots left, it's time to start getting picky.
I'm holding out for something special.
With our coaches becoming more selective, there were more artists who came close but didn't make the cut.
Un-break my heart, darlin' You fell off of the Mike a couple times, and then the sound wavered, so I got a little lost.
I'm sorry that you didn't get a turnaround, but people come back, and they actually get picked.
It's crazy.
Thank you so much.
This could be the end of everything Yeah.
Figure out how to contain those nerves.
You can't let it overtake the performance.
Well, thank you all so much.
And don't you worry, don't you worry, child Your voice is a muscle.
It has to be trained.
Pushing too much air, versus not enough power, so that you can get very comfortable in your falsetto.
Thank you so much.
Oh, adeline, have Coming up, you don't wanna break my heart the artists give amazing performances Oh-oh-oh-oh That have Adam and pharrell going head-to-head A lot of competition on pharrell's team for that particular style right now, so Oh, my.
You've just witnessed a verbal gift covered in spikes.
And doing whatever it takes.
Whose team? Where are you going? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Welcome back to the blind auditions.
As the teams narrow down, the artists nervously wait to audition.
Let's see if our next singer has what it takes to make a team.
My name is toia Jones, I'm from Montgomery, Alabama, and I'm 29 years old.
I grew up singing in the church choir when I was 7 years old.
We never really missed a Sunday.
If you'd get sick, my mom would be like, "you'll be okay.
Jesus will heal you.
" Oh, my God.
My dad owned a lounge back in Montgomery, and the music he played definitely influenced me.
It was like blues, old-school music.
I would see him coming home late at night.
He's beat down, he's tired, trying to make ends meet for his family.
The biggest thing for me that I've had to overcome was my father's death.
It's tough for a 16-year-old child.
And my mom sat me down and told me he had diabetes.
I remember going into the hospital room, but at that point, he was unresponsive.
A couple of days later, he passed.
It took my mom through a lot, and it took me through a lot.
Before he passed, he, you know, wanted to make sure that his kids were okay.
And so that kind of gives me the strength to become what he saw in me.
Toia has a personality like her dad, and it's almost as though he is shining through at this moment.
For years, I was struggling, trying to get my music career started, and so I moved back with my mom.
That was a very tough time.
It was just me just trying to perform.
And then the lord blessed me with my boyfriend, marius.
He plays keyboards.
Music is definitely what attracted us.
Everything that she did, I wanted to be a part of it because I saw the talent in her.
He was like, "you know, let's start a band.
" I was like, "okay, let Let's let's do this.
" We perform usually cover songs from pop, country, rap.
I sing at casinos, parties, clubs.
Oh, so you're out there.
You're really doing it.
I'm I'm doing it.
You can book me for your next For your next gig.
Good for you.
I-I might book you.
I got a 90-second gig for you today okay.
On "the voice.
" Okay, absolutely.
That's the one we want you to do well in.
I can do it.
Everything is riding on this audition.
If a chair does not turn, I go back to the struggle of being a hungry musician trying to let my little light shine.
Come on, toia! Come on! Yes! Come on, baby girl! Come on! Yes! You've been on my mind I grow fonder every day lose myself in time just thinking of your face I don't know why I'm scared I've been here before every feeling, every word I've imagined it all you never know if you never try to forgive your past and simply be mi-I-I-ne I dare you to let me be your your one and only I promise I'm worthy to to hold in your arms so come on and give me the chance to prove that I'm the one who can walk that mile Yes! Until the e-e-end starts Thank you! Yes! Wow.
What a performance.
Thank you.
What's your name? My name is toia Jones.
I like your lipstick.
Thank you.
I wore it for you.
For me? Yes.
Thank you.
Listen you sang from the heart, and the canvas you just painted was just so clear.
So that's why I picked you.
I'm just happy that you're here, and you're gonna be on a team.
So, whose whose team? Where are you going? Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
I tried to cut him off, okay? You did.
You did.
Damn, I was like in all honesty, I really I did.
"So, what team do you want? Forget about this guy.
" 'Cause don't think I didn't hear the whole, like, "I wore the lipstick for you, Adam," and all that.
He's a good-looking guy.
He sings really good.
He's awesome.
He is awesome.
And I'm telling you, if you go on his team, he's going to lift you.
If you come on my team, I'm gonna help you lift yourself.
Wow.
I think you should pick me because I heard you do this crazy high, big, beautiful, perfect note.
And I thought to myself, "wow.
"This just went from really great to something that's gonna really help make this show better.
" Thank you so much.
And so I-I think, you know You know, there's there's no one like this on my team, so there's no competition for this particular style.
There's a lot of competition on on pharrell's team for that particular style right now.
Oh, my.
No, there's a compliment and also a tactic.
It's both.
He just shut you down pretty bad.
What you've just witnessed was a verbal gift covered in spikes.
Covered in spikes.
Okay? I felt your spirit, and I felt, like, somebody that was, like, singing for their life with their life.
We will build what you want to build.
What you're trying to accomplish, I will see to it that that happens.
Thank you.
Thank you.
It's time to decide who you pick as your coach.
I Choose Pharrell.
Treasure that is what you are Toia wanted to make it.
She wanted to be heard, singing for her moment.
God bless you.
No, God bless you.
I just thought that she sang perfectly.
Yes, yes! I feel really blessed right now.
I'm on team pharrell, and it cannot get any better from this.
Let me do my holy dance.
I was leaning toward Adam.
And then pharrell spoke to my spirit, and it was an instant connection.
Team pharrell! Whoo! Wow, she is interesting.
Damn it.
Pharrell's definitely giving me a run for my money, but I got to move on.
Damn it! The competition is stiffer than ever right now.
I love that.
I wouldn't have it any other way.
Team Adam is just getting warmed up.
I hate you right now a little bit just a little bit.
He's tough.
I'm scared of you.
See beneath your beautiful tonight? You can download full versions of tonight's blind-audition songs on iTunes.
That I never, never, never known you smile oh, yeah and gravity Still to come, Gwen steps up her game.
You guys are all really stupid.
Let me just give you your shirt.
I just got Gwen'd.
And later, an eccentric artist I'm trying to hit every cracker barrel in the U.
S.
, and I'm about halfway there.
May have found his soul mate.
Do you like cracker barrel? O.
M.
G.
We're meant to be.
Welcome back to the blind auditions.
Our next artist, 29-year-old new York native Amanda Lee peers, thinks she has what it takes to make a team.
What's it like to grow up in Rochester? It's a midsize town, but it's still pretty close-knit.
You know, I grew up in the church.
Yeah.
And that's how I started playing music.
Music was always a huge part of the church service.
My family's born-again Christian.
Coming from a religious family, it was hard to be open about being gay.
And I used music to let that all go.
When people finally found out I was gay, I started to feel unwelcome at church, so I left and never went back there.
At that point, I guess I correlated music with church.
And it hurt you know what I mean? So I just gave up on it.
You're my sweetest girl, and I love you.
That was a challenging time for us as a family, even.
We worked through it, and we just love her, and she's our gal.
So, what'd you do after that? At the time, I was in college for graphic design, so that's what I do for, like, my full-time job.
How did music come back into your life in a positive way? Well, I met Sandy, and she was like, "you need to start playing out and singing.
" At that point, I decided to start my own band.
And we had a really good run.
Now I just play solo.
I like to mix different genres Rock and soul and a little pop.
My girlfriend, Sandy, she's been my number-one supporter.
It's not easy to go through something where you've been turned away just for being who you are.
And I commend her for doing what she loves the most because she is meant to do this.
I love you so much.
I love you guys.
So proud of you.
Here goes nothing.
It hasn't been an easy road, and I hope that people can see that you can overcome stuff.
And the most important thing is to always follow your dreams, no matter what anyone says.
Oh, gosh.
Here we go.
Oh, my God.

Give you your shirt.
What's your name? Amanda.
Amanda.
Yeah.
This is for you.
Oh, thank you.
Amanda is her name, you guys, okay? And she's on my team.
Amanda.
And you guys are all really stupid because she was amazing.
Crazy.
Come on! I love your tone of your voice.
And when they're turned around, they can't see that you actually have really good stage presence.
It's a whole package thing going on.
I'm excited.
You know what? I-I missed out.
I got caught up in listening to your voice, and then, before I knew it, Gwen goes and hands you the t-shirt.
Congratulations.
And it was great.
Congrats.
You got it.
It was great, too, because I saw, like, a woman possessed.
And she just like, as she's turning around, I just I got so Gwen'd.
You're just like Like I was like, "I just got Gwen'd!" Oh, my God! It was exciting, actually.
I really liked it.
You guys are made for each other.
I can tell.
Awesome.
Perfect.
I'm Yay.
Thank you, guys.
Yay.
Thank you.
I want to say hi.
Dope voice, man.
Thank you.
With Amanda, there was something special about her.
I should have turned around! She had her own signature sound, and I'm looking for that.
My whole life, I'm surrounded by boys, and now I got all these amazing girls on my team.
Yes! Yes! Yay! Congratulations! Hey! When Gwen turned, I was so excited.
I've loved her ever since her first album came out.
This just, like, feels like a dream right now.
It's so awesome.
I feel excited.
I'm a little scarred by that.
Hey, that was badass.
That was badass.
That was awesome.
That was awesome.
That was fun.
Gwen lands her second artist of the night.
Have you ever felt this way? And she continued her winning streak, picking up pop hopeful gianna salvato.
I loved your vibrato.
It was so unique.
Thank you.
And I feel excited.
I got another great person on my team.
Oh, wow! But her celebration was short-lived Oh, I could drink a case of you When she fought Adam for indie artist rebekah samarin.
Your voice is kind of like a super fast, fancy sports car or something, and you're capable of doing so much with it.
I'm picking Adam.
Yes! Oh! I hate you.
Yes! Blake also found great talent, scoring 16-year-old soul singer grant ganzer.
Oh, oh-oh-oh You are an amazing, powerful singer with so much conviction.
Thank you so much.
Coming up just say something, I'm giving up on you The night's final vocalist moves our coaches.
I loved how sincere it sounded.
I was like, "oh, my God.
I got to hit it.
" You could feel the desperation.
You're not just a singer, you're an artist.
I have to know more, and I have to be your coach.
Welcome back.
As night 4 of the blind auditions comes to a close, here's how our coaches' teams are stacking up.
Yes! Adam has won over pop artist Ethan Butler, soul singer Chris jamison, and indie folk artist rebekah samarin.
Yes! Gwen has added three strong female vocalists to her team, including pop singer Jean kelley, rock/soul artist Amanda Lee peers, and pop hopeful gianna salvato.
I know you! Blake picked up pop vocalist Tanner linford, country singer Craig Wayne Boyd, and pop/soul artist grant ganzer.
And pharrell strengthened his team with pop singer katriz Trinidad and r&B vocalist toia Jones.
Let's see if the night's final artist can use his quirky personality to land a coach.
My name's Jonathan wyndham, I'm 22 years old, and I was born and raised in South Carolina.
I was a goofy kid carried a briefcase.
It had my tolkien books, maybe a "star wars" action figure.
Like, that's a great way to get girlfriends.
When he was young, he was actually kind of dweeby, actually.
I grew up with a speech impediment till fifth grade.
I couldn't say my r's all growing up, which was "awkwawd," you know? Like, it's hard to break the ice when you can't You can't say "break.
" Music helped a lot, you know? It did? Yeah.
My mom figured out, whenever I sang, it wasn't an issue.
Crazy.
Music's so therapeutic like that.
Well, music became where I found my confidence.
Right, right.
So which is huge.
And what do you do for music? Well, I got the opportunity to do some session work and songwriting and then traveling with bands and playing guitar and singing.
Would you like that life on the road? The best part about it is I'm trying to hit every cracker barrel in the U.
S.
, and I'm about halfway there.
How many is that? It's over a hundred.
There's always this hard decision that comes about 5:00 P.
M.
, when you're on the road and you're like, "where do we stop for dinner?" So we just ended up always going to cracker barrel.
And before I know it, one of my best friends got me this map of, like, the nation and all the cracker barrels.
And we started checking them off whenever we'd go to them.
If you win this thing, you could visit the other half.
You'd be done with this.
Absolutely, and then you just have to go back and photo-document and do it all over again.
Oh, my God.
That's great.
I'm singing "say something" by great big world.
It's a song that talks about finishing a relationship and moving on, and it's one of those songs that helps you when words fail.
I'm nervous to have a chance to play in the big leagues.
Gwen Stefani's one of the hardest-working women in the entertainment industry.
Pharrell's a killer producer.
Maroon 5's first album I think I purchased it eight times.
And then I grew up on country music, so Blake Shelton's, like, right up my alley.
I learned the craft playing on the road, and then here's my opportunity to do it.
Looks good.
Come on, Jonathan.
You got this.
Say something, I'm giving up on you I'll be the one if you want me to and I oh, I will swallow my pride 'cause you're the one that I love and I'm saying goodbye goodbye Just say something, I'm giving up on you mm And I'm sorry that I couldn't get to you ohhh oh! Oh! Damn it! Way to go, Jonathan! Yeah! I would've followed you ohhh-ohhh-ohhh-ohhh just say something, I'm giving up on you baby, please, ohhh say something, I'm giving up on you Yay! Congratulations.
What's your name? Jonathan wyndham.
Wow.
Where are you from? I'm 22, and I'm from Lexington, South Carolina.
Okay.
I loved how sincere it sounded.
You started off with a lot of control in the sense But yet not, because it was like the emotion was coming through, and it was a little wavering, but I liked it.
I liked that about it.
And then it just kept getting stronger and stronger.
And then, when they hit it, I was like, "oh, my God.
I got to hit it.
" So I hit it, and then And then you're cute.
And it's like I'm I mean Thank you.
I don't know.
No, I just I think that it would be really fun to work together because I thought one thing No, I don't mean like that.
Stop! She's a married woman, all right? No, because I feel like you sing with a lot of emotion.
And one thing I think I could add to it is, when I turned around, I feel are you nervous? Are you absolutely.
You look like you're a little nervous and I've been listening to Adam's music since I was like 12, so oh, great.
That's really great.
That's really good news.
And yours, as well, so Oh, okay, cool.
But I think that, you know, stage presence-wise, I could help you with that.
Yeah.
I can get you really comfortable, you know? Absolutely.
Since you were 12, huh? And me too.
And me too.
Oh, he said I just heard me.
And that's a very dramatic song.
And it's like you are in the hot seat when you sing this song right away, 'cause you just got a piano and it's silent and it's a very beautiful song.
That's right.
And what's really great you know, I'm just gonna start coaching you now, so we can, like, get into the vibe of it before we do it for real.
It's like a delicate vulnerability that I loved about your voice, which was feeling like, "oh.
" It's this it's this moment, and it's just this really raw thing it's very sincere.
And then sometimes I felt like it was that combined with you being a little bit nervous.
Yeah.
I wanted to hear just a little less nerves and more of the that vulnerable thing.
And I think there's definitely more.
I think this is a very small portion of who you are.
And I have to know more, and I have to be your coach.
Thank you.
Well, I actually concur with everything they're saying.
I mean, that's one of the first things I look for is, like, it's an interesting tone, and then the conviction, 'cause the the conviction gives everybody a hint toward who you are as a person.
I heard the sincerity it's true.
It became your song.
I think you have your own voice, and you should be very proud of yourself.
You did a great job.
Thank you so much.
Hey, Jonathan.
How you doing? Uh why you all laughing? Because you know I'm screwed already? I mean, I'm I'm clearly Hey, I listened to "ol' red" before I heard maroon 5.
Oh, is that right? So yeah.
Oh, wow.
Thank you.
And I'm back.
Just break my heart and step on it on the floor.
Man, listen, country music is about stories, and in order to to tell that story, you have to be 200% invested in that lyric.
And when you performed that song just then, you could feel the desperation in your presence.
I mean, you're not just a singer you're an artist.
And we both like plaid and leather and blue jeans.
Do you like cracker barrel? O.
M.
G.
We're meant to be.
Wow.
He's good.
I'm just saying.
You're a grown-ass man.
Don't say that, man.
Don't.
Please don't say "o.
M.
G.
" It's a little creepy when you say it.
I know.
L.
O.
L.
No.
No.
Stop it.
So, which one of us do you pick as your coach? All right, all right.
I'm gonna have to go with I-I pick Adam.
Oh, yeah! Yeah! I can't wait, man.
You got a great voice a really interesting voice.
Thank you.
All right, brother.
Congrats, man.
There's just something very true to what he was doing, and I really appreciated that, and I wanted to turn around and see what I was hearing.
I was pleasantly surprised with the juxtaposition of the two people The one you know, with the broken soul and the kind of handsome, rugged exterior.
And he looks like superman no big deal.
I was gonna say, that's a ladykiller right there.
Yeah, I racked up two four-chair turns.
Oh, it so feels good to be the king again! Damn it, I really liked him.
I should have seen it coming.
I mean o.
M.
G.
