BASED ON THE ÅRE MURDERS:
HIDDEN IN SHADOWS BY VIVECA STEN

HIDDEN IN SHADOWS PART 1
[Daniel] Good morning, sunshine.
I meant to drive all the way up,
but some asshole blocked the driveway.
Here you go. Coffee.
Cool. No sweat.
Okay.
- What's wrong?
- [Hanna] Nothing.
It's just that a dead body shows up
right before you go on parental leave.
You know what Bruce Lee's
favorite drink was?
No.
[battle cry] Watah!
[Daniel laughs]
- Let's go!
- Okay.
[pensive music playing]
POLICE LINE - DO NOT CROSS
[Hanna] When is Ylva coming?
She'll be here in a couple hours.
[uneasy music playing]
We found, uh,
a left leg over there,
and, uh, a right hand, I think,
over by the bridge.
They call it the suicide bridge.
[train approaching]
Hi, this is Johan.
I can't take your call right
[stirring music playing]
[music fades]
[Ylva] So far, we still haven't found
the left forearm or the right leg.
It's a male. That we know for certain.
But we haven't found
any kind of ID on him.
There was someone who mentioned suicide,
but if the victim was alive
when the body was ripped apart,
and the head ended up in the snow,
there should be livor mortis
on his right cheek
from resting against the snow
where we found it.
However, livor mortis
is present on the neck,
which may suggest
that the victim was already dead
when the body was torn apart
in the train collision.
Also, there are contusions on the head
I'd like to examine further
Sorry, I'm just
POLICE
[retching]
Contusions from a blow, you said?
[sighs] I don't know yet.
Before I make any assumptions,
I'm gonna need to run a full autopsy
back at the lab.
And then there's this.
His clothing
and his entire body are covered
in these little red cotton fibers.
[Hanna] Here.
Thanks.
[Hanna sighs] I'm heading home.
Okay. I'm gonna stay.
I need a… few minutes.
For sure.
- You're not going to Bygget?
- [chuckles]
No. I'm okay. [sniffles]
- See ya.
- See you tomorrow.
- [music playing in background]
- [man 1] Fucking pig!
- [man 2] Hey.
- [man 3] What?
- What the hell? I didn't do anything.
- [woman] Hey!
Oh my God, great to see you!
Come in with us!
[Anton] I'm good. It's too crowded.
- It's gonna be a good time.
- I'm not up for it, really.
- Hey, come on.
- I'm… I'm gonna head home.
[dance music playing]
Okay, I get it.
Get what?
You wanna dance, so let's dance.
Uh… No, I… I was actually heading out.
Heading out?
- Yeah.
- For a cigarette?
- What?
- I'm gonna go for a smoke. Come on.
Come on.
- So shall we?
- [coughing]
- Yo, can I bum one?
- No, sorry. It's the last one.
- All good.
- Sorry, man.
[both laughing]
- [ethereal music playing]
- [muffled chattering]
[ethereal music continues]
[thud]
[music fades]
[man] Police department.
How can I help you?
[woman] Hi. Uh, it's probably nothing,
but, um,
my husband still hasn't
come home tonight, and I was…
I can't get a hold of him at all.
Um, he's not answering.
[uneasy music playing]
[Daniel] Good morning, sweetheart. How
are you? You wake up happy, don't you?
You wake up happy.
Shall we go say good morning to Mommy?
Good morning, Mommy.
- [Ida] Look at that! Hi!
- Hi! Look who just woke up, eh?
- Hi!
- [Ida laughs]
Hi, sweetie!
Oh. I'm gonna miss her.
She won't even notice you're gone.
Don't worry.
Okay, just go.
You're messing up our morning routine.
Which is?
Which is the morning news, black coffee,
inspirational dinner recipes,
and then eating up this cute baby leg
[Daniel kissing]
[phone ringing]
Can you take her real quick?
I have to get this. Just…
- I gotta run. Okay.
- Please. Real quick. Here we go.
Do you wanna come to Mommy?
Hey, Mommy's gotta go now.
[baby babbles]
I could bring you with me
in my bag. [kisses]
- Hey.
- The remains belong to Johan Andersson.
Thirty-five-year-old male.
Former skier, and partner in J&L Event.
[car beeps]
Lived close by, in Duved.
Oh, that's the guy?
A few years back, I watched him win
one of the World Cup races.
Right. Well, his wife reported
him missing yesterday evening.
Has she been informed?
I'm leaving that to you and Hanna.
Uh, and, Daniel,
the cause of death was determined
to be a violent blow to the head
from a blunt or a flat object.
Not from hitting his
head up on the track?
Highly unlikely.
The contusion is located
on the top of his head.
So it was murder, then.
So it would seem.
I'm so sorry, Daniel, but we need you.
Do you think you can postpone
your parental leave?
I don't think Hanna should do this
on her own right now.
No. No, of course not.
Thanks, Daniel.
- See you later.
- Okay.
[Ida] Johan?
My God. We worked together at Ski Hill.
God, that's so sad.
Who the hell would wanna murder him?
Grip wants me to lead the case.
Uh-huh.
Well, you can't.
- You're on parental leave this week.
- I know.
No.
What can I do?
Ida, Grip needs me.
Look, you know this course
is very important for my job.
I know,
but you can take the course next year.
[Ida] Uh…
So I'm just supposed to unpack my bag
and… and stay home with Alice?
What can I do? You can't hit pause
on a murder investigation, Ida.
No, but you can hit pause on my life.
I've been dealing with Alice's colic
mostly by myself these days
because you were barely around
during the last investigation.
- I know. I'm sorry.
- You know what? This is your mess.
- Hi, sweetie.
- [Alice and Ida laugh]
Hi. Kiss, kiss.
I love you.
Bye-bye.
Okay, bye, honey.
Bye.
She pooped, so change her diaper.
- Do it right away.
- Sure.
[Alice cries]
Bye.
[Alice screams]
- Let me know if you need anything.
- Sure.
Okay. Bye.
- [woman] Bye.
- [Daniel] See you.
[footsteps approaching]
- Hey.
- Hey.
[sighs]
Ida's out of town for a while, but…
- It's gonna be fine.
- I can take Anton with me instead.
- No, no, it's fine.
- It's not a problem.
- I go strictly by the book if that's
- No, I said it's fine.
Or else I'll go with Anton,
and you can grab a coffee.
Okay. I guess you woke up
feeling cranky today, huh?
Woke up? I didn't sleep at all.
'Kay.
Got it.
[chuckles] Sorry.
No worries.
- [woman] Hello.
- [Hanna] Hi.
Hanna Ahlander, Åre PD.
This is my colleague… Daniel Lindskog.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Have you found him?
Yeah.
Okay. What happened?
[Hanna] Maybe we should take it inside.
So he's dead.
I'm sorry.
[melancholy music playing]
[Daniel] Our condolences.
[wind whistling]
[barking]
[man] I don't know what to say. Sorry.
So we're not going off-piste
with Johan Andersson?
No. I don't know
where the hell he is today.
But look, it's still been a fun day.
Not the kinda stuff you do back home.
- [woman] But…
- [man] Excuse me.
[phone ringing]
J&L Event, Linus Sundin.
- This is Rafael Herrera, Åre PD.
- You better give us our money back!
I'm with some clients right now,
so what is it?
It's about your colleague.
What?
Johan Andersson has been found dead.
When can we talk to you?
[somber music playing]
- Hi.
- [man] Hi.
- [Daniel] Are you Leo's father?
- [woman] He's Leo's biological father.
- I'm Jens.
- Daniel.
[Hanna] Leo.
Do you remember the last time
you talked to Johan?
I've told you this already.
I had breakfast with him.
Okay.
And then you went to a concert in…
in Östersund?
You and your mom.
Do you remember what time?
The concert began at…
at 7:00
with the opening act.
Okay.
And what did you do after?
We stayed at a hotel.
Then, uh, we went home
early in the morning the day after.
Johan wasn't home
when we got back that night.
But, uh, sometimes
he sleeps at the, um, at the office.
He was seeing a… a childhood friend
for dinner that night.
Carl Willner.
[Daniel] When did you and Marion
go your separate ways?
[Jens] Oof. Uh…
Around, uh, 12 or 13 years ago.
And what about you and Johan?
Did you get along?
Uh, yeah.
He's been really good with Leo, so…
- Yeah, I'm very grateful for that.
- [phone chimes, buzzes]
[Marion] Leo.
Will you catch the murderer?
- Absolutely.
- [Daniel] We'll do the best we can.
[Marion] Come on. Let's go home.
So listen…
Call us anytime.
- Okay. Thanks.
- [Hanna] Mm-hmm.
[phone chimes and buzzes]
Johan was grabbing dinner with a
childhood friend the night he died.
- Carl Willner.
- Uh-huh.
I have to stop by, uh, Ida's mother's.
She went for a walk with Alice
and locked herself out, so…
Huh.
I'll just bring Anton.
[Anton] Tips are flooding in right now.
- [Hanna] Really?
- Yup.
"Last night, I heard
loud noises from underground."
"I saw the murderer
in my dreams." [laughs]
- You're cheerful today, huh?
- Some people…
Hey.
Here's a dog owner
who, uh, apparently saw a dark van
with, uh, with a busted taillight
on the dirt road between
the Duved train station and the bridge.
That could be something.
Uh-huh.
- [Hanna] Hi. Carl Willner?
- [woman] Sure, he's over there.
- Great. We just need a minute.
- Mm.
- [Hanna] Hi.
- [Carl] Hi.
Hanna Ahlander, Åre PD.
- Carl, hi.
- This is my colleague, Anton Lundgren.
Hey.
Hey.
Oh. Do you know each other?
- Uh…
- [Anton] No.
- No, uh, we've never met before.
- [Hanna] Oh.
Well, you've heard the news about Johan.
Yeah.
Marion said that…
Are you sure it was… I mean…
- What if it was just an accident?
- We're investigating it as a crime.
Holy shit.
Well, Johan was here. Uh…
It was strange.
He had a bloody nose when he came in.
He used a shirt to stop the bleeding.
But he seemed stressed,
and he left almost immediately.
And the shirt? What did he do with it?
He threw it away in
the dumpster out back.
He said he'd fallen, so…
[Hanna] Why did he come here?
Well, you know,
we were supposed to have dinner, and…
Yeah, we do that every week.
But he just stopped by to cancel.
Fuck.
[Hanna] You said he just stopped by.
Where was he going?
He mentioned a road trip, I think.
Road trip where?
[Carl] I assumed it was a work thing,
but it seems kinda strange now.
- [Hanna] When was he leaving?
- Later that night.
- Is this it?
- Yep, it is.
[Hanna] We'll take it with us.
[Anton] Okay.
[radio] The deceased has been identified
as alpine ski racer Johan Andersson.
The victim's family has been contacted,
and authorities
[phone buzzing]

What the hell? We had an agreement!

and it's final.

- It's an emergency.
[Alice crying]
Hi. Thank you.
Come in. Come in.
[Alice continues crying]
[Daniel] Okay, here we go.
I'll be right here.
There you go.

She's finally asleep. Sit, sit.
Um, do you want anything to drink?
- No, thank you.
- Okay. Hey, I'm sorry for the mess.
- I haven't had time to, uh, to clean up.
- Don't worry about it.
[Daniel] I'm just gonna tidy up a bit.
[sniffs]
[Hanna] So I was thinking.
I saw that the event firm J&L Event, uh…
I found their Instagram,
and they posted this picture.
The guy next to Johan is wearing the exact
same shirt we found today with the blood.
That's Johan's associate, Linus Sundin.
We'll bring him in tomorrow.
Nice work.
I'm glad you decided to stay in Åre.
I asked Raffe to go through
the company bank accounts and finances.
Apparently, J&L
Event applied for a loan.
We don't know whether
it was Johan or Linus who filled it out.
Both of them could sign for the firm.
I wanted to show you, uh…
Hold on.
I've had these headaches recently,
and I just can't get any sleep.
I was all worried,
thinking it was a tumor in my head,
but Ida told me to get an eye exam.
Turns out I need glasses.
I haven't gotten them yet.
How much, uh, money are we talking?
Half a million.
I wonder if the company or one
of the guys had financial problems.
But…
[Daniel yawns]
How about we, um…
um,
continue tomorrow?
Sure.
Now that Alice is asleep,
I should probably try and get some…
- Yeah, of course. Yes.
- Oh, and thanks for the formula.
You saved me.
No worries.
[gentle music playing]
- [Linus] Hey.
- [Jens] Hey.
So you've heard, right?
Mm-hmm.
Huh. How's Leo taking it?
I can't make sense of it.
Do the police know what happened yet?
- No idea.
- No?
By the way,
you need to clean out the garage.
You can't keep your liquor here anymore.
The cops are gonna be looking
all over this place.
You gotta move it tomorrow.
- Okay?
- Okay.
[Ole] Our thoughts today
are with Johan Andersson
and his family.
Some of us knew him personally.
He was well-known
and appreciated by everyone here.
Such a reminder of our mortality
can give rise to fear.
But it can also pave the way
for our forgiveness and reconciliation.
[phone buzzing]
MISSED CALL
[exhales]
CAN WE MEET?
[sighs]
- Hey.
- Hey.
Uh, I just wanted to come here
and tell you in person that I'm…
Well, I'm a cop.
I mean, I guess you noticed that maybe,
but, uh…
Yeah, since you're a witness
in a murder investigation,
you and I can't, um…
Uh, we can't see each other anymore.
You're not openly gay, then?
Um, well, it's kinda complicated,
to be honest.
Um, I'm just gonna…
Uh, look, I, uh… I'm sorry if…
I get it.
It's sad, but I get it.
[pensive music playing]
So, uh, I'm just gonna
cancel your booking.
No problem.
And I'll get you a full refund.
Uh…
Yeah. Bye.
- Hi.
- Hi. Hanna Ahlander, Åre PD.

- [Hanna] Yes.

TUESDAY 27TH PILGRIMSFJÄLL
[Hanna] What's Pilgrimsfjäll?
[Linus] Pilgrimsfjäll?
It doesn't ring a bell.
I don't know what it is, but… Do you
know what happened? Any leads yet?
We don't know yet.
Do you recognize this?
Johan used it for his bloody nose.
He, um, must have borrowed it from me.
It was lying here in the office.
What happened to your lip?
Um…
Sorry, but can we do this
over the phone or something? Because
We're nearly… we're nearly done here.
- I have to pick up my kid.
- We're almost done here.

We were going to make an investment.
Build a ropes course
to be used in the business and…
The same day, um, he…
Earlier that day,
I discovered that Johan
hadn't signed on for the loan.
We were both here at the office.
I confronted him because of it.
He, uh, changed his
mind out of the blue.
So we started arguing.
[Daniel] Who threw the first punch?
He hit me first.
I just defended myself.
[phone buzzing]
MOTHER-IN-LAW
[Hanna] Where did you go after that?
That evening?
Um, I watched my son's hockey practice,
then I went home, and, uh…
Jens and I, we were
[Daniel] Jens Wernolf? Leo's dad?
- Exactly.
- [phone buzzing]
He's renting my guest cabin
until he finds something.
We were watching football until 11:30,
and then I went to bed.
[Daniel] I have to take this call.
[Hanna] What made Johan change his mind?
I have no idea.
- You have no idea?
- No.
But you knew him so well?
Yeah, but he refused to tell me why.
But something's up with the congregation
we're leasing from.
Their pastor, Ole Nordhammar,
Johan didn't like him.
I don't know why.
- Okay.
- Listen.
[uneasy music playing]
I've known Johan all my life.
He was like a brother to me.
And I loved him.
I… I would never…
[sighs]
Okay.
Don't travel anywhere
until we've verified your alibi.
Sure.
- Uh, didn't you get my text?
- No.
Well, I don't want it anymore.
What?
The police were here.
And they might come back.
You can't do that.
I've placed orders for two months.
All right. Then I'll have to
cut your throat and kill you.
[laughs] I'm messing with you.
- Well, this is the last one.
- Yeah, yeah.

from the church for a ropes course.
There were discussions on whether
to renew the contract or not.

Uh, maybe, yes.
But when he was alive,
a majority of the board members

where Johan's car was
the weeks before his death.

So you knew Johan Andersson?
Yeah.
- Do you mind?
- Mm-hmm.
And, uh, you were a couple?
Mm-hmm.
How'd you know each other?
I was actually working on
the development of, um, Pilgrimsfjäll.
It's a… community college
for Bible studies.
And, uh…
Well, I thought that, um, J&L Event
could potentially help us
with our nature experiences.
And then one thing
led to another.
[melancholy piano music playing]
I loved him.
So much.
Mm…
I used to ski to our meeting place
so Ole wouldn't become suspicious.
But was, uh, Johan aware
of Ole's demeanor?
- And what he'd been doing?
- Mm-hmm.
So were you and Johan
going away together, or were you
Yeah, that evening.
When Johan found out I was pregnant,
he wanted to get me away from Ole.
But…
but he didn't come to our meeting place,
and he didn't answer his phone.
And then I heard that…
And where was Ole on the night
that Johan was murdered?
I don't know.
I'll let you rest for a little bit.
Take it easy.
You can come by the station tomorrow,
and we'll talk there.
[Rebecka] Mm-hmm.
Stay in this room
though. Just to be safe.
- Okay?
- Okay.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
Hi. We have to bring Ole to the station.
[Daniel] We just talked to him.
I know, but he could be the one
who killed Johan.
I'll pick you up.
[knocking at door]
- [Daniel] It looks pretty dark.
- [knocking continues]
[Hanna] Police! Open up!
- [indistinct chattering]
- [gentle music playing]
Hi, uh, Rebecka Nordhammar.
What room is she in?
We can't share any information
about our guests.
- I apologize.
- She's my wife though.
I can't help you. Sorry.
[fire alarm ringing]
No one seems to be home.
Alain, check the back.
[fire alarm continues]
[concerned chattering]
- [Daniel] There's no one home.
- [Hanna] Okay. Stay here.
Copy.
[fire alarm continues]
[anxious chattering]
[unsettling music playing]
[police siren wailing]
She's not answering.
Call the hotel.
[alarm continues]
[tense music playing]
[door lock beeping]
[panting]
[music subsides]
[Ole] Please. Open the door.
Just…
I just wanna talk.
- I love you.
- Can you please just go?
Please just open the door
so we can talk about all of this.
- I'll explain
- I won't open the door.
[Ole] I understand.
What I've done is unforgivable.
I want you to know that I regret it.
I regret it, and I'm very sorry for it.
Look.
I swear I'll get help.
I'll make some calls tomorrow.
This is not the kind of father
I wanna be. I'll do better.
I love you.
And I want us to be a family.
It's not your baby.
Go away.
[alarm continues]
[bang at door]
[bang at door]
[menacing music playing]
[banging continues]
[melodic pop music playing]
[music fades]
