NARRATOR: Previously on Third Watch: See something wrong, I try to fix it.
- Does that make me crazy? - It makes you a good cop.
There's a few things I wanna clear up, Davis.
Police work's all about the law of averages.
- That's for me? - Yeah.
Just some cookies.
I need you.
BOSCO [IN VOICEOVER.]
: The week the lottery jackpot rolled over to $70 million everyone was buying tickets.
Lines went around the block.
Seventy million dollars.
You win something like that, you are one lucky son of a bitch.
Me? I don't believe in luck.
Seventy million dollars.
Yeah, right? What I could do with that.
BOSCO: Get out of the way.
If they just gave me the power to decide who lives and dies - I could make this world a better place.
- Bosco as God.
Morons.
Shouldn't have driver's licenses.
Even worse, Bosco as the DMV.
Isn't that a lateral move? Every street I turned on Was more screwed up than the last.
- The trains were running fast.
- Like I'm gonna sit locked in a tube - With that garbage.
- Ouch.
I ride the trains, Bos.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
You win the lottery, you can buy a helicopter.
- Work? - What are you gonna do? - Sit at home all day? - Seventy million.
I'm gonna strap on a bulletproof vest because I need a hobby.
Don't tell me you believe in this scam.
For that kind of dough, you can scam me any day.
- Roll call.
- I'll tell them you're here.
Plotting the murder of everyone you don't like.
After you take away their driver's licenses.
Morons.
Crime Analysis has put out a burglary pattern for 99 to 108 Street from Arthur to the river.
Got a few particulars on these mopes, and at least, it should give us some-- If memory serves me, that makes four times this month, Boscorelli.
- Sorry, boss.
- Actually, it's more like five, boss.
- Is it? - Isn't that twice this week? You got nothing else to pay attention to? Next time command discipline goes in your file.
- Yes, sir.
- Since you missed the introduction of our new patrol sergeant, see him after roll call.
- Jason Christopher? - In the flesh.
All right, that's it.
Eyes and ears open out there.
Hey, Jason.
Congratulations.
- How you doing, Faith? - Can't complain.
And how did you do on the test, Boscorelli? The sergeant test? - I didn't take it.
- I guess that's probably for the best.
- What was that supposed to mean? - I don't know.
Just make up with him, okay, Bosco? We got enough trouble out there.
Come on.
I wanna buy a lottery ticket before the whole world gets off Work.
"For the best?" Come on.
what am I doing here? BOSCO [OVER RADIO.]
: Yokas? Yokas, let's go.
Come on.
I'm not standing out here all day.
It's a jumper.
It's very tragic.
Rudy.
You got to be kidding me.
[RUDY GROANS.]
You are stupider than even I can believe, Rudy.
- My head.
- Your head? Like there's anything vital that can be hurt in there.
Turn over.
Shut up.
Let me see your hand.
I'll break it.
- I'm sorry.
I didn't see you.
- Yeah, you're sorry, all right.
Get up.
at Bleecker and 8th.
One under for petty larceny.
DISPATCHER: 10-4 David.
Stupid lotto.
CLERK: All right.
BOSCO: Yokas.
- Let's go.
We have an arrest.
- What? Rudy Granger just committed a theft right in front of me.
Ha-ha.
Rudy Granger.
Come on, Bosco.
What did he steal? A theft is a theft.
- I'm at the front of the line.
- We have an arrest.
Good luck, everyone.
Any other day you'd give him a kick in the ass and send him home.
What is the problem With me buying lottery tickets? State's just taking your money.
Any idea what your chances are of Winning? - Better with one than without.
- Hey, I'm doing you a favor.
Oh, I'm sorry.
Should I thank you for getting me out of a line that I was in for a half an hour? Hey, you're taking a nap While I drive you into the house? - Don't wanna be seen.
- Worried about your rep? Don't make me come back there.
- Please.
BOSCO: Now.
[GUNSHOTS.]
I repeat, shots fired! [SIREN WAILS.]
Whatever caliber it was, somebody meant some serious harm.
You guys sure you're okay? I'll let you know When my ass unpuckers.
Mine wouldn't until April.
Who would want to hurt Rudy Granger? Obviously, someone Who wants me to have a bad day.
Bet you Rudy would say his day's worse.
CHRISTOPHER: Sullivan, you two got nothing to do? Excuse me? Put yourselves 98, back in service.
- I know what 98 means.
- Then do it.
- You sure you guys are okay? - Yeah.
Thanks, Sully.
[MOUTHS.]
Let's go.
Excuse me.
[MOUTHS.]
Later.
- Thanks, Davis.
How? I have no idea.
FAITH: we don't even know Where the shot came from.
There was like 25 people in front of the store.
None of them know either.
We heard the shot and everybody just hit the ground.
- Phantom kills a guy in custody.
- Something like that.
How'd I know you were gonna be my problem? - Like I asked for this? - We're about finished here.
You know, I get to go in and try and explain this mess to the boss.
Yokas you didn't salute.
And out here in the street, it's not Jason.
- It's Sergeant Christopher.
- Yes, sir.
- Doesn't seem to like you much.
- We all used to work together.
- Misunderstanding.
- Wouldn't call that a misunderstanding.
- What happens to the car? - Tow it in.
- Can we get our stuff? - We'll get it to you.
- Today? - A couple of hours.
I need you both to come in, give statements.
- As soon as we get a new car.
- Thanks.
Rodoldo, please make my day and tell me you found something on the canvass.
No, I don't want to hear that.
You should have just let me buy the ticket.
I'm not taking this case until we have a timeline.
A couple bucks buys a whole lot of dreaming.
- Who does he think he is? - Who? - Boy sergeant.
- You can forget him, man.
Talking to me like it's my first day.
I got shirts older than that stiff-necked son of a bitch.
- What would you do if you won? - Twenty-two years.
I need that puppy crawling up my ass? Have to get me a little vacation home in the Caribbean somewhere.
- I'm too old for this crap.
- Jamaica, maybe.
- You ever been to Jamaica? - What? Queens? - Yeah, Jamaica, Queens.
- What are you talking about? The country.
Have you ever been to Jamaica? - What would I want to go there for? - Spend all day on a beach.
Rum punch, half-naked women.
Doesn't sound good? He's only a couple of years older than you.
When I win, you're not invited to my island.
How about that? Hey, Ryan, what's up? Anything? You sure about that? FAITH: Ugh.
Damn it.
- What's up? - That was a brand-new memo book.
- Clean it with some bleach.
I'm not gonna use bleach.
I'm gonna throw it in the garbage.
I'm not throwing my Kell light away.
- What is that? Your good-luck charm? - No.
You know how much these cost? - Did you see a guy on a bicycle there? - Bicycle? Who? One witness, somebody in a third-floor apartment thinks the shooter rode a bicycle.
- I don't remember seeing that.
- No.
But we hit the ground pretty fast.
[BOSCO CLEARS THROAT.]
We were concerned with the wounded prisoner in our RMP and didn't really notice anything else.
So you guys know anybody Wanna hurt this guy? No, not really.
As far as criminals go, he was pretty insignificant.
DISPATCHER: Units in the 5-5.
We're getting a 10- 13.
10- 13.
Shots fired at the police on 108 between-- [SIREN WAILING.]
He just shot them.
They were only walking.
All right, get out of the way.
Get the hell out of the way.
Marty? Marty? - Sully.
- Marty, where are you hit? [GASPING.]
TY: we got buses coming.
All right? Can you hear me? - Stay with me.
Stay with me.
- Please, help me.
- Marty? - Marty's all right.
Marty's all right.
- I didn't even see him.
- Just relax.
Davis, we gotta get these guys to the hospital now.
- We're not waiting for EMS? - No.
[SIRENS WAILING.]
- Bosco, come on.
- Sully, leave him.
Leave him.
Don't move him.
There's a bus around the corner.
- What happened? - They were coming out of this building.
A man rode up and started shooting.
- On a bicycle? - Mountain bike.
- Sure? - Yeah.
A yellow bicycle.
Guy that shot Granger might have been on a bike.
- What's Granger got to do with this? - I don't know.
Where's the damn bus? It's all right.
Shh.
Hold.
All right, all right.
No problem.
Come on, you're all right.
It's not that bad.
- Never saw it.
- Stay with me.
GREG: Tell.
Look at me, Greg.
Look at me, Greg.
- Tell Mary.
- No, no, no.
Don't say that.
- Don't say that.
- Oh, please.
You tell her yourself.
All right, Greg? Please.
Greg? Greg? - Come on.
- All right, Bobby, get the first one.
- Kim, it's through and through.
- Okay.
SULLY: Place is already starting to fill up With bosses and politicians.
Do me a favor.
If anything ever happens to me don't let some guy get up there and say how I'm a hero because I gave my life for the city of New York.
Wouldn't be my choice.
I don't come to work to give my life for anything.
- Did you call your mother? - No, not yet.
Don't let her find out about this from the news.
All right.
They won't even say a name.
They're just gonna say "a police officer from the 55th precinct.
" - You don't want her to find out about-- - I just said, "All right.
" I'm sorry about your friend.
He wasn't really my friend.
Just, we were in the academy together.
That's all.
He seemed to know you.
I was the company sergeant.
A lot of people knew me.
We weren't really close or anything.
They look pretty clean.
Your hands.
[TURNS WATER OFF.]
- Ready to roll? - Yeah.
No, Cheryl.
Davey's not one of them, I promise.
No, I can't say yet.
Sorry.
Yeah, I'll have him call.
- Fifty-fifth precinct.
- I'm all right, honey, really.
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm gonna be a little bit late is all.
All right? Okay? I love you too.
Bye.
Gonna call your mom - let her know you're all right? - She's at work.
Detectives think this might be the guy that shot Granger.
White guy on a bicycle.
How many could there be? - Like 20,000.
- You know what I mean.
He just shot those guys for no reason.
He had a reason.
[CHUCKLES.]
CARLOS: Is that the family? DOC: Probably.
Damn.
DISPATCHER [ON RECORDING.]
: All units clear the air.
We have a 10- 13.
Unit with the 13, back off the mic.
You're unreadable.
TRUJILLO: 10- 13.
Shots fired.
We're hit.
We're hit.
I'm hit.
My partner is down.
Get some help, please.
We need help.
[RECORDER CLICKS.]
RYAN: The Post has been contacted by someone who claims to be the shooter.
This guy says he's at war With the government and its soldiers, us.
And that this is just the beginning.
He also took credit for shooting at your RMP.
- Son of a bitch.
RYAN: We're passing out a description.
Witnesses are with the artist.
We have a composite, we'll get it out.
For now what we have is a male, white, 35 to 40 approximately 5' 11", - Has anybody contacted their families? - We've contacted Richardson's wife.
But we haven't found anybody for Trujillo.
- I think Trujillo was divorced.
- Did he have any kids? I hope not.
Ty? - Yeah.
- I'm Greg's wife, Mary Jane.
We met at the academy graduation.
Ah-- Of course.
Yeah, yeah.
Um.
Were you there? Yeah.
Did he? - Was? TY: No, no.
He was unconscious.
I don't think he even knew.
Look, I'm really sorry.
[SOBBING.]
They won't let me see him.
BOSCO: I can't believe there are no cars newer than this.
FAITH: It gets us around.
- No.
- It's not comfortable like the old one.
- That's all in your head.
Oh, God.
[SIGHS.]
Look out, look out, look out, look out.
Damn it.
We gotta keep moving.
[MARY JANE CRYING.]
I feel like I can't walk.
You don't have to do this.
[SNIFFLING.]
[SIGHS.]
Yes, I do.
[SOBBING.]
[SOBBING CONTINUES.]
BOSCO: You believe in fate? - Destiny? Stuff like that? - What? - Why things happen the way they do? - I try not to think about it.
If I'd let Granger lie there, it would've been me that got shot.
We have the cage.
You know, would've deflected it.
Granger hadn't tried to boost, Wouldn't have been in the car.
- Can we change the subject? - Was Richardson meant to die today? Why was it their day and not mine? I really wanna win that lottery.
WOMAN [OVER TV.]
: Once again leading our top story officers gunned down this afternoon.
It's all over the news.
I wanna see the kids.
- They're sleeping.
- I just wanna look at them.
That's it? It all seems to be here except the shoes.
- Do they need shoes? - I don't know.
[ZIPPER OPENS.]
I checked it.
It's all right.
[SNIFFLING.]
He was so proud of being a cop.
- I could take that out if you want.
- No.
I wanna have it.
- Thanks, Ty.
- I didn't really do anything.
[PEOPLE CHATTERING.]
[CHATTERING STOPS.]
[SIREN WAILING IN DISTANCE.]
[DOOR UNLOCKS, OPENS.]
Hey, what are you doing home? I heard on the radio.
Is it true that guy says he's gonna shoot more cops? - People talk all the time, Fred.
- They don't talk like that.
Nothing's gonna happen.
You don't know that.
I'm really careful.
News also said this guy killed someone in the back of a police car - shooting at other cops.
- Yeah, I know that.
- You don't have to go.
- Fred-- Really.
What would be wrong With just calling in sick? - I can't do that.
- Why? - I just can't.
- No.
Tell me why.
Tell me why you're gonna go somewhere you know someone's trying to hurt you.
If I didn't and something happened, I'd never be able to live with myself.
Well, what about us? How are we supposed to live without you? Baby this is what I am.
This is what I do.
I'm a cop and I can't expect someone else to sit in that seat for me.
Don't ask me to do that, please.
- Hey.
- John.
Tatiana, how are you? - Yeah, I am good.
- Good.
- How's your sink? The drain? - Yeah, that's fine now.
- That's fine.
Thank you again.
- You're welcome.
Well, I'm just on my way to work.
Yeah, I know.
I saw what happened on the news with that policeman.
Yeah.
And I want to say that for you to be careful.
Yeah, I will.
Thanks.
Did you knock on my door? Are you Rudy Granger's mother? He's not here.
He got killed yesterday.
Yeah, I know.
Did you want something? I just.
I guess I just wanted to say I was sorry.
Why? You kill him? No.
He was in my car.
You're the cop.
I'm not gonna sue you, if that's what you're worried about.
No.
He wasn't always bad, you know.
He got straight A's in seventh grade.
He was on the honor roll then.
I'm sorry for your loss, ma'am.
I just.
That's what I wanted to tell you.
You wanna come in or something? No.
I gotta get to work.
I'm late.
- How much time do we have? - None.
- They're calling for us already.
- Great.
Yokas, where's your partner? He's getting changed, sarge.
He'll be right in.
Listen up.
I got a meeting With the CO in five minutes.
So I don't have a lot of time.
Johnson and Farraday, you're taking over We should get some transfers in by the end of the week.
Sorry, boss.
SWERSKY: Everyone else have their assignments? One PP called this morning and asked me if I thought we needed the task force up here.
Their thinking was that some of you might not wanna work today.
I knew that was unnecessary.
Thank you for proving me right again.
Now, please, don't take any chances out there.
Boscorelli, see me after.
Yes, sir.
I'm getting a command discipline.
- Lieutenant? - Christopher.
He's gonna call us for a meet on the street to have me sign it.
- I'm telling you, apologize to him.
- I don't owe him an apology.
- He was engaged to her.
- Then I did him a favor, right? It wasn't hard to get her to go home with me.
- I think it was meant to be.
- Yeah.
Put an existential spin on it.
That'll win him over.
I'm never gonna get in the ESU.
Another CD in my folder.
So then why were you late? I just can't seem to get my ass here.
What is that, the fifth yellow 1 0-speed We've seen today? It always amazes me how many there are once you start looking for them.
One time we were looking for a Volkswagen with a canoe on the roof.
We found three of them.
We had to ask the victim What color the canoe was.
- What's on your mind? - I'm thinking about Richardson's wife.
- She asked me to be a pallbearer.
- That's an honor.
Yeah.
At the academy we had to run a mile and a half in 12 minutes.
If you can't do it, you don't graduate.
Richardson and some other guy couldn't do it so I stayed back, helped them out, mostly talking so they wouldn't give up.
She said he never forgot that.
I couldn't even remember his first name until his partner said it.
She thinks we were friends.
Let her think Whatever she needs to think if it'll help her through this time.
I keep thinking if I didn't help him get through that run maybe he wouldn't have been there yesterday.
- What the hell are they looking at? - I know.
We're like dead men walking here.
Damn domestic, and I gotta worry about some lunatic capping at me.
No.
Just keep your eyes open.
[LOUD BANG.]
[THUD, LOUD BANG.]
We gotta catch this bastard fast.
FAITH: I mean it, Bos.
Salute him.
BOSCO: Ahh.
Looking at your file, I don't think I need to explain this procedure.
No, sir.
- Can I talk to you at the back of the car? - No.
Come on, Jason.
Sergeant.
Just a word.
It's personal.
Look, I'm sorry about what happened.
- This has nothing to do with that.
- I was young, she was young.
- I was stupid.
It was a stupid mistake.
- Water under the bridge.
- Sign here.
- I said I was sorry.
And I said, sign here.
You need a pen? [GUNSHOTS.]
BOSCO: Get down.
Faith.
Faith! [CAR ALARM WAILING.]

He's on foot.
He's got a scanner.
Son of a bitch had a scanner.
Davis, let's get the car.
[SIRENS WAILING.]
[PANTING.]
- What do you think? - I'm not sure.
We had a visual on that suspect.
He is on foot in a junkyard one block West of Arthur and 97th.
DISPATCHER: Copy that, David.
We have additional units on the way.
I'm gonna circle around.
You stay right here in case he doubles back.
I think we should wait for ESU and Canine.
I'm not letting this guy get out of here.
- Good luck.
- I don't believe in luck.
Then be careful.
[SIRENS APPROACHING.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
There are shots fired in that junkyard now.
Shots fired.
- Bosco? - I'm okay.
I'm okay, Faith.
Charlie's on scene.
[GASPS.]

[SHOOTER GRUNTS THEN GROANS.]
I hit him! I got him! Back of the yard! [WHISPERS.]
Son of a bitch.
[BOSCO GRUNTS.]

- I really wanted to win.
- Come on.
You'd miss me too much.
A toast to Greg Richardson.
OFFICERS: Greg Richardson.
- Here, here.
Bye.
See you tomorrow.
BOSCO [IN VOICEOVER.]
: A group of coffee-shop employees from Queens won $70 million that night.
They all said they'd be at work the next morning.
Rudy Granger was laid to rest a day later.
Me and his mother were the only ones there.
The service wasn't much, but it was all I could afford.
Oh, yeah.
There was one other lottery winner that never came forward.
You know, sometimes I think about that ticket I threw away.
Probably wasn't the winner but if it was, I wonder if I would have showed up for work the next day like those coffee-shop employees.
Yeah, I would have been there.
You bet I would.
