Thirtysomething (1987) s01e14 Episode Script

I'm in Love, I'm in Love, I'm in Love with a Wonderful Gynecologist

1 Oh, my God.
- Oh.
- Hmm.
Oragel.
- What? - Oh.
- I forgot.
Dinner party.
Did I - Yep.
You did it.
You browned the onions, you cooked the carrots.
We've moved on to Pictionary now.
Oh, Janey and I played that at 3:00 A.
M.
Tooth number four.
My God.
3:00 A.
M.
The only thing I'm up for at that time is a spastic colon.
Yeah? What about Woodman? Don't make conversation.
Let's get out of here.
Come on.
I hate word games.
Where's the Ouija board? Oh, no.
You're not gonna try to reach Georgia O'Keefe again, are you? Sesquipedalian.
A seven-toed mammal native to the Tri-State area.
I give up.
We should go.
Let's go.
No, don't go.
We're having fun.
We're having fun.
Bye.
- I know, we're boring.
- No.
But you can come back next week and we'll make cheese fondue and tell ghost stories.
Night, sleepyhead.
- Bye.
- Okay.
- Bye.
- Let's rock, boys and girls.
Good night, cuz.
- See you.
- Bye.
Say hi to whatchamacallit.
Hey, Gar.
You don't want to go for a drink or something, do you? Oh, no.
I think I'm gonna call it an early evening.
- Oh, okay.
- Really, really early.
- See you later.
- Okay.
- Bye.
- Bye.
You don't want to go for a drink or something, do you? Do you? Do you? Um, actually, I was gonna go home and finish Presumed Innocent.
Yeah, well, I have a lot of stuff to do in the darkroom.
- But some other time.
- Oh, definitely.
Huh.
Oh, crap.
Excuse me.
Do you have Now, Voyager? I was just checking it out.
Hi.
So how was Presumed Innocent? I'm a speed reader.
We could talk about your child.
Our child.
Thank you.
And will you be happy, Charlotte? Oh, Jerry, don't let's ask for the moon.
We have the stars.
- It's so sad.
- It's so beautiful.
I mean, why not ask for the moon? Oh, you know, I really like your place.
Thanks.
You know, mine's rented.
All of it.
The couch, the artwork, even the salt shakers.
I didn't know they rented salt shakers.
Oh, sure.
Sure.
You know what I like best about this movie? His eyes.
The way he looked at her with those eyes.
Oh.
Eyes.
They're so unavailable.
Eyes are always the first things.
You look at that first, the eyes.
Yeah.
Oh, my God, look what time it is.
- Oh.
- I should go.
Oh, hey, I'll take it back.
Oh, don't worry.
No, no.
I'll take it back.
Yeah, but you have to rewind it, or they'll charge you an extra dollar unless you're a club member.
That's okay.
I might watch it again.
I don't really have any plans for this weekend, so.
Yeah, but what about your boss? That Woodman guy? He's great.
Woodman? Yeah, he He is.
My boss.
And great.
He is great.
But what? You're not gonna see him this weekend? No, he's got a conference.
Oh, a conference.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And I really miss him, but I don't know.
Part of me's sort of Relieved? Yes, exactly.
I feel like I can finally get some work done for a change.
Well, you work together.
Well I mean, you work.
Together.
We used to.
Now I sit in my office and wonder, are we gonna go out on our lunch break, or are we gonna I don't know, make love in the stockroom again or something? You know, I thought I noticed City Services were suffering.
- Right.
It's my fault.
- Yeah, I'll bet.
I have to tell you something.
Um, the other day we were in a meeting, and I made a suggestion, and This is really stupid.
But he just He raised his finger at me, this "I'm your boss" finger.
It really made me mad.
Oh, maybe it's just not working out.
Is he seeing other people? - No.
- But he won't commit? No, it's not that.
Well, whatever it is, it's his fault.
- Of course.
- Of course.
You know something? You're easy.
Oh, that's what they all say.
I mean to talk to.
Hope is great.
She's my best friend, but sometimes I feel like she still sees me standing there in my Brownie uniform.
Yeah, with no badges.
Right.
Oh, this Woodman thing, really.
I just don't know what to do.
Oh, hi.
Am I late for the P.
T.
A.
meeting? What are you doing here? You're supposed to be at the conference.
I know.
I was taking notes.
Some windbag was gassing on about.
"Philadelphia is there a monorail in its future?" And I just kept writing your name over and over.
Ellyn.
Ellyn.
Ellyn.
Is there a monorail in your future? Mmm.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Oh, I missed you.
It's lunchtime.
I'm starving.
Oh, good.
I just came back from the market.
I just want some tuna or something, or whatever you got.
I got a bunch of salad stuff.
You want me to fix you a salad? Right.
Right.
Salad.
Salad.
I'll fix it.
Can I have a yogurt, too? Yes, if you're very good.
What? Nothing.
- What? - Nothing.
It's just that you know where the spoons are.
I know where the spoons are, yes.
Okay.
So the conference was pretty boring, huh? Oh, yeah.
And to top it off, I'm going crazy.
I quit smoking.
You did it.
Great.
And as a surprise, to celebrate.
Tickets.
Plane tickets.
For Vermont.
You always said you like to ski, so.
I did? Open the box.
The box.
Okay.
Ski boots.
You said your old ones would never make it through the winter, and my sister had some new ones, so I stole them.
Your sister's my size.
Great.
So the only thing is, I'm gonna have to check my calendar, 'cause I'm not sure I'm free next weekend.
- You're free.
- I am? Um, how do you know? I checked your calendar at work.
Oh.
So I'm free.
Great.
But I was really thinking of working next weekend, 'cause we have that big meeting on Monday.
Don't work.
I'm your boss, remember? I remember.
You're my boss.
Are you okay? Yeah.
What? I'm great.
These are great.
Well, I think maybe I better go back.
Okay.
So maybe I'll call you later.
Later.
Right.
- Or not.
- No, no.
Call.
Thank you for the boots.
And tickets.
Oh, yes.
Wuthering Heights.
"Kathy, Kathy, my wild sweet.
" Okay, no Kathy.
How about how about - Oh, excuse me.
- Excuse me.
- How about Katie? - Katie? The Way We Were.
"Oh, see ya, Hubble.
" Right.
And then what does he say? What does he say? "See you, Katie.
" Right.
- Oh.
- Seen it ten times.
And every time, I hope they stay together.
- I know.
- Oh, please, it would never work out.
"Hubble, take out the garbage.
" "Hubble, you never take me anywhere.
I'm a person who needs people.
" Oh, gosh.
Here.
Here, enjoy it.
No.
Didn't you want to watch it? No, no, that's okay.
I'm set for tonight.
- I've got the sequel.
- Oh, I love that movie.
- You do? - Slime Mavens on Coffee? Yeah, I'm trying to give it up.
I was also looking for The Philadelphia Story.
- Oh, that's my favorite movie.
- Yeah? Oh, when she says, "But, sir, you don't think I'm made of bronze.
" "Tracy, Tracy, you're still the golden girl.
" - Oh, that's good.
That's good.
- No, no, no.
Anyway, they're out of it.
They're always out of it.
- I know, I know.
- Dad.
Yeah, yeah, honey? Dad, there's this thing that kind of embarrassing here.
What? What is it? You owe $179 for The Parent Trap.
Uh, look, why don't you find something for yourself, Robin.
Okay? I'll get this straightened out, okay? Dad, does it have to have Hayley Mills in it? Divorced.
Cute.
- Yes, she was.
- I meant him.
Oh, if you like the type.
Right.
The masculine, sexy, wittily self-deprecating type.
Yeah, that type.
Get your butt out of this car, fool.
- Oh, come on.
What about you? - Me? I'm taken.
Come on.
Go for it.
I can already see you as the wicked stepmother.
Let's go.
I really like Melissa.
So I don't know.
Maybe she can be my new best friend, and I can finally dump you.
Yep, I can still see you.
Can I still see you? - I like this kid.
- Does Woodman like kids? I don't know.
He likes Vermont.
I know that.
He came over yesterday.
He brought tickets and ski boots.
- Great.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
He didn't ask me at first.
Oh, the cad.
Well, I hope you threw them right back in his face.
Huh.
Oh, you did.
I know.
I did.
He's so nice.
It was so nice of him.
Just Why You know that Bob? That Way We Were guy? Why can't Woodman be more like Bob? Why do you want him to be like Bob? 'Cause I don't know Bob.
Honey.
Tommy DiMucci.
Oh, no! I don't believe you.
"Oh, Tommy's the cutest guy in ninth grade.
" And then he tries to give you a Saint Christopher medal.
Then it's, "Tommy, ugh.
" "Nicky Acuba is cuter than Tommy.
" Okay, one major difference, Hope.
- I work with Woodman.
- You worked with Tommy.
Well, the Spirit Committee was hardly a career, Hope.
And the other day at work, he made me mad.
I'm sitting in a meeting with him.
I make a suggestion, he raises his finger at me.
Which finger? Oh, you're right.
Forget it.
Forget it.
Maybe it's PMS.
Maybe it's post-MS.
Maybe you need to go back on the Pill.
Yeah.
At least I knew when I was gonna be .
But my gynecologist retired, of course.
- Oh, I have a great guy.
Dr.
Howell.
- Do you? - Oh, he's sweet, he's old.
- Old I like.
You'll love him.
He's like Dr.
Seuss with a speculum.
- How'd I do? - Not bad.
- Hi.
- Hi.
Oh, hi.
Hi.
Oh.
Sit down, please.
Oh, okay.
- Oh.
Oh, you sit there.
- No, you go.
Go.
- Seriously? - Yes, of course.
- I mean, I - You sure? - Yes.
- Okay.
Well.
So.
- Hi.
- Hi.
You look great.
Both of you.
Well, so it's the big date, right? Have you ever thought that video stores are sort of the mating grounds of the '80s? Yeah, well, it turns out that most of the men I'm interested in are only available on beta.
See? I can have fun without Woodman.
Ugh, my hair.
Hers looks so great.
Mine looks like I got it from Publisher's Clearinghouse.
How's Robin? She's fine.
Actually, she's with her mom for two weeks in Washington.
- State? - D.
C.
Oh.
Brilliant question.
You know, I'd like to make a toast.
A water toast.
To the company.
To friendship.
- Oh, that's nice.
- To friendship.
- To friendship.
- To friendship.
She has such good taste.
What was I thinking about with these chains? I look like a snow tire.
She always looks so fabulous.
Tonight she really looks - She's so cute.
- Pardon me? Robin.
She's going through this baseball phase right now.
She was totally devastated ever since they let Steve Carlton go.
I can imagine she would be.
You could? Yeah.
I mean, after he made all those home runs and all.
Well, I guess for a pitcher, he was a pretty good hitter.
Come on.
You want to talk about change-ups? Fine.
You want to talk about Sy Young awards? Fine.
But do not talk about Steve Carlton's hitting.
- Come on.
- You really a fan? He's cute.
She's cute.
They're cute together.
I think I'll leave them alone for a minute.
Uh, excuse me.
Huh.
Excuse me.
Uh So.
So how long you been taking photographs? Oh, ever since I was a kid.
- Yeah? - Yeah.
- You must be good.
- Oh, I don't know.
Yeah, okay, I'm not bad.
Oh, no, no, no, I shouldn't ask you this.
You probably get asked this all the time.
Oh, it's okay.
Ask me.
Okay.
It's Robin.
See, I don't have any really good pictures of her right now.
You know, she's going through this kind of geeky-beautiful stage.
Like the other day, she was sitting at the kitchen table, and she was eating an English muffin, and the sun was coming through the window, and Ah, that's all there was.
I I just thought, maybe if you had some time, you know.
I don't know.
I've got the time.
Hi.
Hi, hi.
So.
Hi, I'm back.
So who wants first course? I hear the gravlax is really good here.
Oh, gravlax.
I love gravlax.
Have some gravlax.
I brought it home.
I couldn't eat.
All of a sudden, my appetite was gone.
That's not like you.
Either you hate gravlax, or this is serious.
All right, Gary.
Now I want you to imagine this hypothetical situation.
- Okay? - Those are my favorite kind.
You never have to say you're sorry.
All right, now, suppose you're this guy.
I know it's a stretch for you, right? - And you meet this redhead.
- Right.
Okay.
And there's maybe something that might be happening between you.
Maybe? You want to throw a definitely in there somewhere? I don't think yet.
Oh, Well, listen.
From what you've told me about this guy, it sounds fine, you know? - So you've had these two times with him, right? - Right.
And, okay, Ellyn's been there every time.
But you can still tell something about him, right? - I guess so.
- So why am I sitting here eating gravlax? I think the problem is me.
What's wrong with you? Well, come on, Gary, you're the pro here.
You ask people out all the time.
You know what to do.
I don't do this Wait, wait, wait.
Melissa, I have just one thing to say to you.
What's that? Carpe diem, babe.
Excuse me? Latin 101.
Seize the day.
Seize the day.
Seize the day, stake a claim.
Call him.
You know, when you're sure he's not there, and leave a message.
Not too funny, not too desperate.
It's too tricky.
Melissa, look.
This is yet another illustration of how real life is merely a pale extension of high school.
Is there gonna be a quiz on this, Dr.
Shepherd? You want something, right? You get up the guts to ask for it.
You go for the phone.
Your palms get clammy.
Your pits get wet, and you can't wait till you're grown up so you don't have to endure this crap anymore.
And then the horrible, perverse God is laughing at us.
Truth is that it stays the same.
From what I've told you about Bob, you think he sounds okay to you? Yeah, I guess.
You're not sure? Only one thing I'm sure of.
What's that? He's lucky.
I'm, um, I'm I'm not usually like this.
I'm just a little nervous seeing - Scoot down, dear.
- The doctor for the first time.
Sure, sure.
But he's not just a doctor.
He's a person like anyone else.
Isn't he? He's just a person who makes his living staring at He's a doctor.
He's a doctor.
That's the important thing.
He's a doctor, a man of science.
This has nothing to do with sex.
Hi.
I'm Dr.
Bob - Ellyn.
- Bob.
Ellyn? Oh, my God! I mean, Bob.
Right.
Uh so.
Uh, so.
So.
- Hi.
- Hi.
- Hi, Ellyn.
How are you? - Hi, Bob.
I'm fine.
- And you? - Fine, fine.
Um, Bob, I'm a little surprised to see you here.
- I was expecting a Dr - Howell.
- Howell.
- He's on vacation.
Oh.
Oh, well, he must have needed it.
I don't really know him, but where? Bermuda.
Bermuda, oh.
It's very beautiful.
- Well, I've never been.
- Neither have I, but So are you having any problems? No.
Dr.
Kramer.
I mean, do you really think that this is such a good idea? I mean, me up here, and you You're uncomfortable, hmm? - You're not? - Well, I guess I'm sort of used to it.
I mean, this is my job.
It would sort of be like if I came to visit you at City Hall.
Right? Oh.
I see your point.
Yeah.
You would really show up at City Hall in a paper dress with your legs Lookee.
- I'm sorry.
I'm such a child.
- Ellyn.
- I am really an immature person.
- Ellyn, Ellyn.
Listen, I don't want you to do anything you'd be uncomfortable with.
- This is my job.
- Right.
Now I want to help you if you want me to.
Right.
You're right.
I'm just being ridiculous.
No.
So.
But No way.
Forget it.
Fine.
Fine, fine.
So you think you can handle a cup of coffee? Yeah.
Yeah.
Can I get dressed first? - Sure.
- Thanks.
Yeah.
It's me.
Seize the day, babe.
Okay.
Okay.
Seize the day.
Hi, it's Bob.
Sorry, I'm out right now.
You know what to do.
Hi, it's Melissa.
I'm in.
So anyway, okay.
I mean, I was just calling I mean, you talked about taking photos of Robin.
And so, anyway, I was just calling.
So, see you, Hubble.
Right.
So.
Hello? You okay? You sound sick.
- No.
- Your line's been busy.
- I'm fine, really.
- I've been trying to call you.
You're not gonna believe what happened to me today.
I went to Hope's new gynecologist, right? This guy, Dr.
Howell.
Only it wasn't Dr.
Howell.
He's in Bermuda.
So I walk in, and there I am freezing my butt off and I really got to know him.
Bob and I wound up having this really great time.
And are you there? Uh, yeah, I'm here.
Uh, look, I gotta go.
There's, uh, somebody at my door.
I'll call you later.
All right? I swear.
Hon, that's getting a little Jackson Pollock.
Michael, shut up and paint, and stop supervising.
Excuse me, I conceived it, okay? I'm paying for the beer, I'm paying for the pizza.
You got someplace you have to be, Ellyn, like maybe a little exam with Dr.
Kildare? Hope! What did you tell him? - My gosh.
- Ellyn, what's he like in bed? Oh, God, I hate to puncture your sordid little fantasies, boys, but we didn't even go through with the exam.
Did you fail to mention that little detail, miss? - I got interrupted.
- Uh-huh.
Ellyn, we want you to feel comfortable about your body, and all the wonderful feelings associated with it.
Right, guys? - Right.
- Thanks, Elliot.
- So does he wear a glove? - Oh, God.
You're subhuman.
It's a good question.
I've never been to one of those guys before.
- What about Woodman? - Poor Steve.
- Oh, Steve.
The guy's gotta have - Give me a break.
I'm not interested in this Melissa, will you tell them how I'm not interested in Dr.
Bob, please? She's rejecting Dr.
Bob.
Woo.
It's up to you, Melissa.
Gotta go for it.
Come on.
He's a doctor.
He's a lovely professional man.
Maybe I'll get a second opinion.
There's the pizza.
I got money.
I'll get it.
- Food? - Mm-hmm.
Janey.
Janey.
Come here, sweetie.
You're not finished painting.
You okay? He called.
And? - We're gonna go out tomorrow night.
- Really? - It's here.
All right.
- Oh.
Pizza's here.
- We got mushroom, we got pepperoni.
- No anchovies, right? - No.
- So, Ellyn.
- What? - You're on the table.
He comes in.
And you Uh, well, let's see.
The first thing I did was You know it's turned out to be a great party.
- Okay, I have to draw the line here.
- What do you mean? I cannot accept that a bowling ball cleaner can suck a guy's head off.
- Call me literal.
- I'm a doctor.
I see this stuff all the time.
Most guys, you know, on your first movie date, they take you to something sensitive.
You know, My Life as a Dog, A Room with a View.
What is that? - It's a food processor.
- I know, but what's in it? Remember the girl from the sorority, - the one with the big - Oh, yeah, yeah.
- That's her right hand.
- What's he doing with it? Oh, he's making pâté.
You know, I liked that movie.
Great, great.
No, it's just that you seemed a little tentative, that's all.
I was just wondering maybe if we'd hit it.
- Hit what? - The "he's gonna be a perv" stage.
- Oh, I wasn't thinking that.
- You weren't? No, no, no.
Dentists dentists, I think they're sadists.
And I got a lot of questions about podiatrists, but gynecologists You're a doctor.
- Am I wrong? - Doctors, huh? - I never wanted to be one, really.
- No? No.
My dad was one.
My uncles.
- I wanted to be a painter.
- A painter? Mm-hmm.
But then all of a sudden, there I am in med school, and I'm wearing green clothes, and I'm Dr.
Kramer's boy, and I'm really depressed all the time.
Med school is really depressing.
But then it wasn't.
I mean, you know, you spend all this time learning how how little control you have over the end of life.
And see, then I hit OBGYN and it felt really good and I said to myself, "I can maybe be happy doing this.
" And you can be witness to beginnings.
I'm talking too much.
Why are you thinking that? Because I forgot what conversation is.
Oh, it's easy.
You talk, I talk.
You nod, I nod.
You're nodding.
It's a conversation.
Great.
My divorce came through three months ago and see, until I met you and Ellyn the other night, the only words out of my mouth were for prescriptions.
You still paint? Sometimes.
Now Robin, she's a terrific artist.
If she wants to be one, she's going to be.
You know, uh, we should make plans for those pictures if you still want to.
- Oh, I want to.
- Great.
That's That's great.
- So this was fun.
- For me, too.
- Yeah.
- So.
So, right.
So, uh, can I call you again? Okay.
I promise we won't go bowling.
Okay.
- Good night.
- Good night.
So I hope you don't mind the twist off cap.
No.
That cork taste always annoys me.
Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.
What? Oh, no.
Oh, I hate this.
Really.
- Um.
Uh-oh.
- What? - Oops.
- Oh, look.
You spilled.
- That's okay.
- You ruined it.
- No, I didn't.
No.
- So stupid.
I hate that.
- I'll get it dry cleaned.
- I hate doing that.
Maybe I should take it off, though.
Um, is there a dryer in your building? Maybe I should just put it in the stove, huh? Oh, didn't I leave a shirt here? - A blue shirt? - Uh, yeah.
Yeah, it's on the it's on the dresser in the bedroom.
You wore this, didn't you? Smells like you.
Oh, sorry.
I'll take it to the dry cleaner.
No, I like it.
I like the way it smells.
Look, uh, I'm sorry about the wine, okay? - It's okay.
- Is it? Because, you know, ever since I brought up this whole Vermont thing, I get the distinct feeling that I just assumed it was an idea that you would like.
Right.
You assumed I would just tag along.
- I understand.
- Right.
With me.
You know, if that is such a terrible idea, I'm sorry, but I What is going on, Ellyn? What is going on What is going on is It's just everything.
Everything, all at once.
Just just work and you and me, and you and me at work.
- It's just all of that.
- All of what? All of that! That! Things.
Little things.
Little looks you give me in the hallway Which you used to like.
Yeah.
And Tuesday, at that meeting, I made a suggestion and you jumped all over me.
- I did not jump all over you! - You did, too! You did, too! You did, too! You brushed me right aside.
I was running and I am your boss, Ellyn.
Oh, okay.
Great, okay.
Now the truth comes out.
You think that the fact that we're sleeping together is effecting my work, is that it? I did not say that! I never said that! - I'm good at my job! - I know you're good at your job! - I know that! I know! - And I don't think that just because - we have this this this thing - This thing! That you think my work is suffering.
Look, are you kidding me? My work is suffering! You know, we're sitting in a meeting I look at you, I think about something you said the night before.
You know, something dirty.
And I want to grab you and I can't.
- So fine.
It's a lousy idea.
- No, it's a great idea.
No, you know, it's not because it's totally out of control! That's right.
And it's stupid and unprofessional! And I love it! I love you! Um, no.
I just can't handle that.
I'm I just can't handle that right now.
Hey, Ellyn? Sorry about that.
I gotta put this together.
Take a look.
Try to figure things out here.
Because really, this is the crunch.
I really appreciate you seeing me today.
You said it was an emergency.
It is.
It really is.
So, any dreams? Oh, uh, nothing unusual.
You know, trains, tunnels, snakes.
Nothing symbolic.
This is more about reality.
And this guy.
- Bob? - Bob, yeah.
Um, see I saw him tonight.
And it was nice, it was really nice.
Uh, we were together and it felt really good and then there we were and we were about to kiss and And? We didn't.
I didn't.
I don't know why.
Maybe you can help me with this because, um well, I think I might know why.
I think it's because he might be it.
And that scares me.
And it scares me to admit it to myself.
- Risks.
- Yes.
Taking risks.
Yes, I know.
We've worked on that.
Can you pinpoint the risk here? Loving him.
And? Being loved.
Yes.
Do Do we have to stop now? No.
We begin.
Begin? I don't seem to be made of bronze.
No, you're made out of flesh and blood.
That's the blank and the holy surprise of it.
The Philadelphia Story.
Is it in? - Please say it's in.
- It's in.
- It's in? - But it's out.
- What? - Someone just asked for it.
- Oh, no, no, no.
I'll give you anything.
I'll give you any amount of money.
- Name your price! - 80 bucks! For the office visit.
Well, I gotta make a living, right? Ring it up, Charlie.
Coming.
Hi.
Oh, you're sleeping.
I'm leaving.
Hi.
- Uh, hi.
- I'm going.
Um, I'm sorry.
I don't know what I'm doing.
- So - Is that the pizza? I got money.
Hi.
Oh, we were just watching a tape.
The Philadelphia Story.
Oh, you got lucky.
You found it.
- Well, Ellyn did.
- Oh, well even luckier.
But, um, we just started.
We could We could rewind it.
Oh, no.
We can't rewind.
Um, I've gotta go so hey, enjoy it.
- Okay? Take care.
- Um - You like it? - I like it.
Yeah? It's perfect.
It's perfect.
Curling up in a fetal position and going to sleep.
It's the first piece of furniture I've ever owned in my entire life.
Aren't you proud of me? Lynnie, I know what happened.
Melissa told Michael.
Really? How exciting for you.
I need a table.
- Some pine thing.
- Lynnie What? No.
You heard from Michael who heard from Melissa so you don't have to hear it from me.
Great.
- But I want to.
- Oh, you do? Okay.
Let's see.
We were having an orgy.
She walked in.
She walked out.
Uh, we flew to Las Vegas and we got married by an Elvis impersonator.
But you can tell Michael to tell Melissa that we're registered at Tiffany's.
And also that it was really nice being her friend for a week, but c'est la vie.
Lynnie, come on.
What? Hope, we were watching a movie.
She showed up.
Big deal.
Did I get a chance to explain? No.
Did she even let me try? No.
Well, what were you doing there, Lynnie? I was watching The Philadelphia Story! The tape was in.
It's never in.
You told me that you were seeing Steve that night.
I was.
I did.
I did.
And we agreed that That we'd be seeing each other on a purely professional basis from now on.
And that's what you want? Uh-huh.
Definitely.
It's perfect because, uh, it's the only way.
- Lynnie - Lynnie.
Uhh, don't Lynnie me.
I hate that when you Just don't do that.
Just You're just so in control of your life, it's sickening.
- You really think that? - Yeah, I really think that! Ellyn.
Control? The only control in my life is the remote to my TV.
Ellyn, control? From the moment I met Michael it's like I got on this roller coaster Marriage, in-laws, house.
And that doesn't even talk about Janey.
I mean, you want to talk about something that controls me Then why do you do that? How can you live like that? Ellyn, Lynne, that's love.
Gary, I'm fine.
Honestly.
No.
Can you hang on? There's someone at the door.
- Hi.
- Hi.
So, uh, you're sort of working, right? Sort of.
Right.
Okay.
Okay.
I should have I guess we're not too good at just dropping in unannounced, huh? I should learn from my mistakes and Oh, you and me both.
Would you excuse me? I was talking to somebody on the phone.
Um, then I should just come in? Can I call you right back? Yeah.
Yeah.
I promise.
I like it.
That's nice.
So, uh So I was just in the neighborhood and It's a great neighborhood.
Really colorful.
Lots of interesting people.
Great town, Philadelphia.
How did The Philadelphia Story end? I didn't see the end.
It works out.
That's good.
Maybe I should get back to the office.
- I've got patients - You just happened to be in the neighborhood - all the way across town? - What, you think I'm a liar? It's none of my business what you are.
I have no claim here.
Are you saying that you wish you did? No.
Maybe.
I don't know.
No.
Because what if I said I'd like there to be one? Then what was Ellyn doing there? Because, see, I'm new at this.
I don't know what I'm doing.
I'm married 14 years and then, all of a sudden, I'm just out there.
And yeah, okay, so I run into Ellyn and maybe she's interested in me, too.
Whatever that means.
What it means is, my wife left me.
Melissa.
Melissa.
She wasn't interested in me.
And then all of a sudden, I'm not just this guy who walks out on, but I'm Jimmy Stewart and all my lines are written for me.
And yeah, something could have happened.
But something didn't.
And And Oh, I forgot.
I was supposed to say she's all hearth fires and holocausts.
And all she did was talk about this guy named Woodman and all I could do was think of you and and then with our usual perfect timing, you show up and I say something stupid.
Yeah, about rewinding the tape.
Yeah.
Yeah.
That was That was pretty lame, huh? And, um What? Uh could we, uh You want to? Do you? If I take the tape back, can I get another? What happens in the new one? You kiss me.
- Hi.
- Oh, yes.
Um, hello.
Um, I'm going to dinner at Hope's.
Hope invited me.
Uh, Michael invited me.
Well, I'm late, so I'm gonna - Wait a minute.
- Why? Why? Well This is ridiculous.
We're meddling.
We're smoothing We're smoothing things over.
Hope, we are meddling.
I feel like my Aunt Esther.
- Could you move? - Why? I can't hear.
I screwed up with my boyfriend and I lost my new best friend.
I feel like a Could you just tell Hope I felt sick or something.
- I'm going home.
- Ellyn? Can I be honest with you? - Oh, God.
- I, um, I have a confession to make.
Uh, when you called me and told me that you had this really great time with Bob You know, when you went out for coffee I I have to admit, I was a little jealous.
Um, I think because I thought maybe I liked him, but maybe I wasn't sure.
And so when he asked me to the movie, I was gonna tell you of course I was gonna tell you.
But I decided to wait until after we went out to tell you, so that in case things didn't work out, it's be, you know, no big deal.
You know.
Are you with me here? Good.
So, what I want to say to you is, I'm sorry about last night.
You're sorry about last night? Yeah, I should have called you.
I should have told you that we were going out.
I mean, you must have felt terrible when I showed up at the door.
- I did.
- Yeah, I know.
And I heard about everything that happened with you and Woodman.
- Oh, you did? - Yeah, Bob told me.
- He did? - Yeah, after he kissed me.
What? He kissed you? No! Yeah, he did.
- Actually, we, um - Oh, that is so great! Was it How was he? He's a professional.
That is so great.
That is so great.
Oh.
Oh.
Gosh, we could We could go out on a double date if I had a boyfriend still.
But I don't.
I have ski boots.
But don't have him.
You know, I'm I'm really Oh, God.
What have I done? Elle? This may not be over yet.
Oh, boy.
No, it's over.
I saw to that.
No, you, um You wanna go for a drink or something? Do you? Do you? Come on.
Where are you going? I'm calling Aunt Esther.
We're obviously doing something wrong.
Morning.
- Good morning.
- Hi.
So we're all here.
So it's Monday.
How do we save the city of Philadelphia? We've got a lot to do this morning, so unless someone objects, I think we'll dispense with the reading of last week's minutes.
All right, the orders of business for today are: First, public transportation.
Uh, talking about a cutback of buses to the suburbs.
Two, snow blowing.
We've got a problem with our snow blowers as the season begins.
At least 85% of them are down.
We've been going into double overtime, triple overtime.
Something's got to be done about this.
Third more fun We have a potential garbage collectors strike.
Uh, they want a 50% increase over the next two years.
Obviously, we don't have the funds, so we don't have to talk about this one.
And finally, whether or not to have the Liberty Bell cleaned.
So, in that order, Steve.
Steve? Yes? So, where were we? Um, Liberty Bell.
