Who We Are

1 Oh, I got you.
Let's see.
[CHUCKLES.]
What are you doing? We're gonna be late.
We've got time.
Kate.
Come on.
I missed you.
That whole airplane thing scared the shit out of me.
If I was there, that never would have happened.
[KISS.]
Oh.
Hey, I gotta take this.
- You have a good day, okay? - Okay.
You, too.
- I love you.
- Love you.
Hey, Paul.
What's up? Yeah.
I mean, I guess that could be true.
Fine.
Yeah, 'cause then there's a digital record of it, and everything's cool, and it's on the up and up.
[SIGHS.]
[GAME BEEPS.]
[GAME MUSIC PLAYING.]
[TELEPHONE RINGING.]
Does it feel 72 degrees in here to you? Yes? Jojo, Kate just said it's 72 degrees in my office.
You know my doctor said it needs to be 74 degrees, so get in here and fix it! [SIGHS.]
Good morning.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
[UNDER STATIC.]
We had some questions regarding the event.
What press did you want? [HEAVY STATIC.]
I was thinking a fuzzy Iran for the dogfight, and then any Hollywood coverage [INAUDIBLE.]
red carpet.
The gasses listed are two oranges for the venue.
[INAUDIBLE.]
good news is the special prom to prevent fraud reform, and then the job is done.
[STATIC CLEARS.]
Does that make sense? Mm-hmm.
Go! Shoo! [WHISTLES.]
Kate.
Do you have a question? Uh - Lanvin.
- Hmm? My jumpsuit, you were about to ask me about it.
It's Lanvin.
Beautiful.
So you don't want to be late for your panel.
Panel? I know it's a huge responsibility, but I really feel like you're ready.
Right.
Yes.
Of course.
Fab.
Go get 'em.
- Now? - Now! Yes, now.
[ELEVATOR DINGS.]
[TELEPHONES RINGING.]
Listen, we want to publish an excerpt of the new book in a magazine, a preview to promote the sales of the first Skip and set us up for the next one.
And we're gonna do some social media, a series of drawings, where we can just kind of - What? - No, it's not ready.
No, we just need a few pages.
Send me what you've got.
What? Look, I have the worst writer's block.
That is what I am here for, all right? As long as you have a beginning, - we can go from there.
- [SIGHS.]
That's the thing.
I don't have a beginning.
I don't have anything.
I thought you said that you had been working on it.
I'm sorry.
I haven't.
Oh.
[WINCES.]
[SIGHS, CLEARS THROAT.]
Look, you know I adore your guts, but I'm gonna have to be completely blunt with you just so that there is no misunderstanding.
If you don't submit a new book by the time I pop this baby out, then you're gonna owe us $30,000.
Okay? - Like, yeah - Fine, fine.
- Okay.
Okay.
- Okay, yeah.
I'll get it.
Good.
[WINCES.]
Ah, this motherfucker.
Really? [OVERLAPPING CHATTER.]
Hi.
I'm Kate Bailey.
Yeah, Stella sent you, right? Yeah.
Taylor, this is Kate.
Kate, Taylor.
Excuse me.
Excuse me.
Thank you.
[OVERLAPPING CHATTER.]
Hi.
Would you mind, um, telling me what exactly this is? So are you, uh, into signing up for panels without knowing what they're for? Hello, everyone.
[CHUCKLES.]
Welcome.
Um, I am so glad that you all could be here today for this special, special panel.
[APPLAUSE.]
And with us, we have Andrea Slate, um, an actor, creator, producer, and an ambassador for the Center for Paralyzed Citizens.
Hi, everyone.
And Mr.
Andrew Jefferson, who when he's not acting, works with the Department of Defense in creating, um live combat training scenarios, yes? - Yep, that's right.
- Wow.
[APPLAUSE.]
And T.
J.
Black, a truly versatile actor who has worked in both film and television.
Uh, hi.
Uh, truly versatile.
[LAUGHTER.]
[APPLAUSE.]
Now I know, uh, many of you were expecting to see Ben Genovese, the latest winner of America's Next Top Model.
However, we do have a wonderful replacement guest, who is [AUDIENCE MURMURING.]
Uh, who who is also deaf.
Um, we'll just let her introduce herself.
[SCATTERED LAUGHTER.]
Ah.
My name is Kate Ba Oh.
[SIGHS.]
Kate Bailey.
My name's Kate Bailey.
[APPLAUSE.]
Well, great.
Um, we are all here today to discuss how these amazing actors with disabilities have been taking the film and television industry by storm, um, which is fantastic, so I think, um, you know, let's go ahead and get started.
I think my first question And this is for all of you [MUSIC PLAYING.]
95% of disabled characters in film and television are played by able-bodied actors.
There's always a reason that they give.
It's they needed a name, or they couldn't find anyone, or, "Isn't that what acting is all about?" I went to every network, and they were just baffled.
They just didn't know what to do with individuals with disabilities.
But I didn't give up.
I just kept going and knocking those doors down, and it's all about educating them and letting them know that this can happen to anyone, and we are real.
This is how we live our life.
Yeah, a-and sometimes even when I know I sucked, some people are just like, "Oh, my God! "That's That's beautiful! "It was amazing!" And I'm like, "No, "that was horrible.
Just be honest.
I I can handle it.
" That's That's an incredible point.
Thank you for sharing that.
Um, Kate.
We haven't heard from you in a while.
Well Oh.
Uh, there was a mistake.
I'm really not an actor.
Uh, you aren't? Didn't Abraham P.
R.
send you? [TAYLOR.]
I work there, yeah.
Oh, okay.
Well, since you're here already [CHUCKLES.]
Have you been deaf your whole life? Well, um, I got sick when I was baby, and I lost my hearing.
Um, and what challenges have you faced being a deaf person, particularly working in media? I don't know.
Uh, what accommodations does Abraham Public Relations offer you? Nothing.
Oh.
You don't have an interpreter at work? No.
Oh, wow.
Um, how do you follow what people are saying? I just follow, most of the time.
- All right, okay, sometimes.
- Sometimes.
[LAUGHTER.]
Um, I mean, how do you communicate with your clients? I don't have any clients.
I mostly do events.
Oh, cool.
So is that why you got into P.
R.
, to do events? No.
I always thought I would have clients, but I haven't gotten there yet.
Oh.
Did you just start working there? Five years ago.
Oh.
[AUDIENCE MURMURING.]
I guess I'm not as accomplished as the people up here.
I thought I would be, but I never got there.
I guess I'm here because I'm the deaf girl in the office.
No.
No, no, no.
I wouldn't put yourself in a box like that.
I actually never thought of myself like that until now.
Um, well, we are all here to learn from your stories.
I think it's great.
I'm really happy that all of you are here.
You came to learn from our stories.
That's great.
But then what? You move on from this, and we fade back into the shadows.
To be honest, it doesn't even feel like it is our stories that we're telling.
It's more like the stories you want us to tell.
You focus on our disability, but not who we are.
[AUDIENCE MURMURING.]
[MUSIC PLAYING.]
[CELL PHONE BUZZES.]
[DANNY.]
I'm sure it wasn't that bad.
[KATE.]
Yeah.
It was worse.
[SIGHS.]
Two, please.
Um, actually gonna be three.
Michael's coming.
Oh.
Three.
[SIGHS.]
Cheers.
[SOFT MUSIC PLAYING.]
You represented your company on a panel today.
Yeah, a disability panel.
Hey, if I told you yesterday that you were gonna talk on a panel today, you'd have been thrilled out of your mind.
Let's just not talk about it.
Okay? Why am I the bad guy here? You're not the bad guy.
I'm just trying to tell you that I really did not have a good day.
That's all.
Hey, if there's some Oh, um, I'll Hey, does Michael want anything? 'Cause the waitress is here.
[KATE.]
Hold on a second.
I think we're good.
Thanks.
I'll be right back.
[SPUTTERS.]
Danny? Oh, Ryan.
It's been a while.
Yeah.
Yeah, I know.
Hey, was, uh, my friend at Weston and Mason any help? Nah, I think they hired internally.
Ah.
I'm sorry.
I wish there was more I could do.
No.
No, no, no.
It's not your problem.
I'm I'm not worried.
I'm gonna get a job.
Kate's not even gonna have to worry about it, so Yeah? Yeah.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Um, are they here? Yeah, they're in their little bubble right now.
I really want to see him.
Oh, that's really not a good idea.
What? Think Kate's gonna kick my ass? Yeah.
I'm sure of it.
[SOFT MUSIC PLAYING.]
What the fuck? What are you doing here? [DANNY.]
Whoa, Kate, easy.
Seriously? He just wanted to say hey.
Hey.
How you been? Look, I am sorry, okay? You ran away so fast, I never had the chance to say that.
I fucked up, but you gave up.
When you're ready to talk, let me know.
Thanks.
[DANNY.]
Sorry, man.
Hey.
Will you talk to me? I just I don't know what you were thinking inviting Ryan to the table.
I didn't invite him.
Ryan wanted to see Michael.
He just came over.
What was I gonna do, stop him? Yeah.
[SIGHS.]
You know what? You shouldn't have invited Michael to dinner anyway.
What? I understand that Michael needs you right now, but it's been you and me and Michael for months.
[SIGHS.]
I'm I'm sorry.
I just I just want a little more me-and-you time.
Can you forgive me? No? No.
Oh, come on.
Forgive me, please.
I'm so sorry.
- I'm so - Yeah, okay.
Yes.
[CHUCKLES.]
Okay.
Mm.
I've got something for you.
- Oh, yeah, you do.
- No.
Okay, no, no, no.
I bought something for you.
Whoa.
One sec.
[CLEARS THROAT.]
Just in case you ever get locked in an airport jail again without your phone.
You like it? I love it.
I love you.
I love you.
I'm gonna go get ready for bed, okay? I'll be there in a second.
Kate, Michael's a grown man.
He can take care of himself.
Yeah.
You're right.
["I'M AFRAID (TO SAY I LOVE YOU)" PLAYING.]
You had another girl across town And I heard You told your friends You had ideas about putting me down But let me, let me [GAGGING.]

This is Ben Genovese.
He was the winner of America's Next Top Model.
I'm thankful for kate.
Something you could have said you were thankful for is that your fiancée doesn't know that you don't have a job.
All that in there? That's not real.
That's not what I want.
Then what the hell do you want? I Just want to be there for you.
