To the Lake (2019) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

[eerie music playing]
[static on radio]
[reporter on radio] it's too early
to draw conclusions,
but illegal military formations
are trying to seize power in the country,
causing chaos, disorder, and confusion
for many who come in contact with them.
These groups are running operations
across the country
under the guise
of law enforcement authorities.
It is still unknown at this time
who is in command.
Under the pretext of evacuation,
people are corralled into the streets,
and anyone resisting is murdered.
Several cases have been reported
of local residents' conflict
with the so-called "cleaners."
This is an ongoing situation
and we hope
it will eventually be stabilized.
The incumbent government
calls on the population
to not leave the safety of their homes
and to not cooperate
with representatives
of illegal military formations.
- According to the latest Moscow official
- [static on radio]
[coughing]
[Anya coughing and retching]
[Sergey] Anya, what's wrong?
Try and relax.
Try and breathe.
Want some water? Bring me some water.
It could be a normal cough, right?
Give her a second.
- I'm pulling the plug on this trip.
- [Sergey] What? No.
Wait a minute! She's all right!
You're yelling
like we did something wrong.
Shut the hell up!
[coughing continues]
- Anya?
- [Anya] There's nothing to discuss.
[coughing]
I'll go as long and as far as I can, okay?
[gasping] If it's just a cold,
I'll be fine.
If not, we have enough cars,
everyone will fit.
Come on, that sounds crazy.
Why don't you come with me in my car?
I'lI put you in my car, it'll be better.
Not a bad way to do it.
Put her by herself for now, anyway.
Leonid, can you please shut the hell up?
We're not gonna do that!
I'm taking her with me, so fuck off,
I'm not gonna argue.
Anya!
Open the door. Anya, please.
Come on, baby.
[Anya coughing violently]
[Sergey] Open the door.
Let's go.
[Ira] Leonid.
Would you mind if we rode with you?
The others are making
Anton and me uncomfortable.
Listen, everyone, we need to decide
what we're gonna do.
Let's be smart. We have to split up.
Anya can't have
anyone in there with her like that.
It's not safe.
Who's been in contact with her
in the last day
besides Sergey, Boris, Misha?
- Who else?
- We haven't.
If they got infected,
then we all could be.
Let's not get crazy.
It's not like we've been kissing
or anything.
But we do need to make sure
we control what we can.
So, listen, Sergey,
Boris and Misha can take your car,
and you ride with the doctor.
I'll drive with Ira and the kid.
- Why don't we mark them with white paint?
- Polina, just get in the car.
A quarantine is a smart idea.
Thank you, doctor.
So it's not just me. It's settled.
Come on, everybody. Thanks, Pavel.
[Sergey] What other recommendations
do you need?
[shouting] It's not what I need.
It's what we need.
What is it? What? Why?
Why can't you make it?
I'm not going by myself,
it's couples therapy.
[shouting] I'm not a couple all by myself!
I'm not yelling at you.
I'm trying to stay calm.
I'm not yelling. This is my normal voice.
Ira, we promised we'd be together on this.
Ira, you still there? Speak up.
Ira!
Sir, you you left your wallet.
Huh? Yes, thank you.
Want a cigarette?
I quit, but yeah, give me one.
Can you smoke here?
It's forbidden.
[Sergey] Really?
[Anya] But I think you need it.
I apologize.
I'm having a bad day.
It's frustrating.
We both agreed to do this.
And she backs out.
Well, eventually, we all end up
doing what we want to.
[wistful music playing]
Hello.
Hello.
[chuckles] Once again.
When did you quit smoking?
Uh, when I got married.
Mmm-hmm. I see.
Have a seat.
No, I'm not
You heard that she's not coming, so
Sorry, I'll just pay.
Please have a seat.
We have 30 minutes left.
Why not?
She said she wouldn't see
a psychologist with me at all.
- She sees no point in it.
- Hmm.
Why don't you tell me about that?
Look, she's gotten to you.
You're emotional.
[breathing raggedly]
[coughing]
Misha, slow down,
I can't keep up with you.
- Anya, how do you feel?
- [coughing]
I don't know how much farther I can go.
I'm not feeling good at all.
[coughing]
[Sergey on radio] That's it, stop!
Let's pull over!
[Anya coughing]
[Sergey] That's it.
We're not going any further.
Boris, why'd we stop?
[Misha] I saw something.
Look over there, some lights are on.
[uplifting music playing]
[door opening]
[Leonid] Is there anyone here?
Anyone home?
Looks like nobody's here.
All right, I'll get Anya. She needs a bed.
[coughing]
- [somber music playing]
- [inaudible]
Anya, sweetheart.
I'll be behind the door
if you need anything.
- [Anya] Sergey.
- What is it?
[Anya coughing] Bring me my diary.
The Moleskine.
- [Pavel] So you'd better wear gloves.
- What?
I have some. Hold on.
[Anya wheezing]
[moaning]
[shower door opens and closes]
- [shower running]
- [panting]
Come here.
I don't shower with men
on the second date.
[sighs] Here.
You're cold.
Come here.
Is that better?
Let's say it one more time.
Tell me who we're not supposed to talk to
or accept food from while we're here.
From Papa, Misha, Grandpa Boris
- Yes, and who else?
- Um
[door opens]
Anton, you're the one I need.
- Uncle Pavel, are you contagious?
- Hopefully not.
But I'm not 100% sure,
so we need to listen
to your mom now, okay?
But listen to me, too, because
I'm a doctor and I want to keep you safe.
Masks.
I want you to put these on
so that we don't get sick.
Now, let's go on a treasure hunt.
Let's open up all the drawers
and look for medicine.
All right?
Let's start right here.
Let's see what we find.
- [Ira] What are you looking for?
- Huh? Medication.
- [Ira] What kind?
- [Pavel] Anything.
Oh!
Ira, you don't have
a first aid kit, do you?
All right.
Okay, here we go.
But I still don't know what to inject.
There's nothing here
except normal saline and glucose.
Really? That's it?
- What is this for?
- For panic attacks.
[Anya coughing]
- [Sergey] I'll help you.
- Sorry, you can't go in there.
And you can?
[Pavel] Can you hear me?
Have you taken any medications?
Why did they bring him to us?
[man] Nobody's taking him.
They've never seen anything like this.
Did you give him anything?
Can you hear me?
[gurgling]
In three days, all the doctors were dead.
They all dropped dead, except me.
How does that happen?
I don't know. It just happens sometimes.
Historically, who dies
from a plague the least?
- Who?
- Undertakers.
I've been exposed
directly a number of times, and yet
[Anya coughing]
- So what does need, antibiotics, or
- [chuckles] Well, antibiotics are
[Marina screaming]
I told you not to wander
around the house by yourself, Marina.
- Take her!
- Dad, what happened?
[Leonid] Go with her. We'll handle it.
Get out of here!
[Leonid] Is Anya locked down?
- [Sergey] Yes, she is. Chained up.
- [Leonid] What the hell happened?
[Pavel] Everyone has a bullet wound.
He shot them down.
[Sergey] His children?
- Okay. Let's get out of here.
- [Leonid] They're contagious?
- [Pavel] Leave the room.
- [Sergey] Let's go.
[Boris] We need to bury them.
[Pavel] Burying is out of the question.
Don't come in here. Lock the door.
- [Leonid] It's contagious. No one goes in.
- I'm closing the doors.
[door closes]
[Pavel] I think
we should follow his example.
We've had a hard day, to say the least.
We all need to rest, including you.
What do you mean?
There's no time.
We have to find drugs, antibiotics.
This house is so big,
there's gotta be something here!
Calm down.
There's nothing here.
[Marina] Uh, upstairs, in the bedroom,
there are some antidepressants.
You know what,
I found a chicken in the freezer.
Of course, it would fall under
the category of traditional medicine,
but it's all we have.
I could try to extract interferon.
Interferon?
[scoffs] Yes!
Well, then, job done, right?
I guess we can all just go to bed.
[door slams]
[Boris coughing]
[Boris grunts] All right.
Oof.
[panting]
You okay? Want to take a break?
Listen to me now, it's important.
This is a butt.
It can kick.
This is the barrel of the gun.
So
we put the bullets in here.
And here we have the safety.
- [gun firing]
- [Sergey screaming]
Mom, we're here.
[Anya] Good, Misha.
That's good.
Now go and leave us alone, please.
[coughing]
Ira, are you alone?
Did Misha leave? [coughing]
Now he's gone.
I don't think I have much time left.
When I'm gone, please [coughing]
I'm not asking
as the woman who stole your husband.
I'm asking you as a mother.
Don't abandon Misha, please. [coughing]
I'm begging you, don't abandon Misha.
[floorboard creaks]
[coughing continues]
[door closes]
[Sergey] What's with this barricade?
[Ira] Here's the deal.
We're dividing the house in half.
One side for those in contact,
the other for the rest.
We can meet in the kitchen.
No one from your half can enter ours.
Something like that.
You can tell everyone over there.
So it's already been decided
in this meeting of yours?
[Leonid] Sergey,
put yourself in our shoes.
We have to protect ourselves somehow.
- [Sergey] Yeah.
- That's all we're doing.
[Pavel] I also think it makes sense.
There's no reason to expose everyone.
[wood clattering]
[Leonid] Stay put!
What, that spot isn't contagious?
It's just like
when you drop a sandwich on the floor.
Why don't we just apply
the three second rule with this?
- I told you to stay put, now do it.
- [Sergey] Leonid, it's all pretty stupid.
We've been together this whole time.
If this is the virus
someone else would've gotten sick.
I would've gotten sick.
As for Anya Anya's just a little tired.
She's been cold, it's been stressful.
We've been eating garbage.
It's just a regular cold.
Now, we have honey. This interferon.
I think, in a week, she'll be good to go.
She'll be back to normal.
[Leonid] So you say
we hang around here for a week?
We don't have enough food.
How about you leave then, huh?
[Leonid] Sergey, why are you
starting this? What are you talking about?
What am I talking about, huh?
How far is the cabin?
Hundred and fifty miles, right?
Shouldn't take all day
even if the road is bad.
And we'll stay here,
in the leper colony, waiting to die.
Now, they're dividing the house.
The whole house might be infected already.
Did you think about that?
[Leonid] Why are you so difficult?
[Sergey] Uh-huh?
[shattering]
Wash it over there
on your side of the barricade.
We don't have a sink.
[Leonid] Just stop, this is crazy.
How much time does she have left anyway?
A few days at best and it's over.
May God forgive me.
And we'll leave.
Where are we supposed to go alone?
I don't know this area.
There's lakes everywhere.
Boris knows them, I don't.
We don't even have GPS.
Why don't we just stay here
catch our breath?
Yeah, our breath.
Breathing is the biggest risk here.
We're breathing poison.
She's infectious, get it?
All of them spend time with her,
including the doctor.
Every time we breathe, we're in danger.
Don't you get it? What's wrong with you?
- Settle down. Come here.
- Leave me.
- [door slams]
- [breathing heavily]
Where are you going?
Aren't you working tonight?
[Marina] No, I'm not in the mood.
[indistinct chatter]
[sensual rock music playing]
Whiskey on the rocks.
[rock music playing loudly]
[static on radio]
[Sergey snoring]
[radio beeps]
What are you doing here?
- Everyone's asleep, and I decided
- Go back to your half.
I was just emotional.
Probably just stress,
Marina's gotten to everyone.
Please don't think I'm like her.
What are you like?
[machine beeping]
[door opens]
[whispering] Leonid.
[whispers loudly] Leonid.
Leonid.
I've got the details.
We can do it on Friday.
- [Leonid] Okay.
- [man] But here's the catch. This urn's
It's not in stock.
So I recommend uh, this one.
It's a bit smaller, but really nice.
She's still here.
Polina, we discussed this already.
It's over. Her brain is dead.
She's not Mom anymore.
How could you say that, you asshole?
[screaming] She's still alive!
She's still alive!
[sobbing] Why are you oh, God.
[Leonid] Easy, easy, easy.
[Polina sobbing]
[cell phone vibrating]
MARINA
[screaming] God damn you! I hate you!
Get out! I hate you!
Get out of here!
- [door closes]
- Oh
She's still alive.
[whimpering]
Mom
Wake him up
if I don't come back in five minutes.
Where are you going?
I just need to go. Stay here, please.
[door closes]
[Anya] Sergey.
Sergey, are you there?
Uh, I'm here, it's Polina.
Misha left for a second.
Do you want me to wake up Sergey?
[Anya] Polina, honey.
Don't wake anyone up. [coughing]
Just hold the flashlight for me.
I can't find the switch.
[Anya grunting]
- Wait.
- [Anya coughing]
[gasps]
Polina.
Did you find the light?
Um
Um
[nervously] Um
I can't I can't switch it on.
It won't turn on.
Um the battery must be dead.
I'll get Misha.
[eerie music playing]
[unlocks door]
[gun cocking]
[Polina] What the hell are you doing?
I was left alone with her.
She's blind, she can't see shit!
Where were you going, you dumb fuck?
Why did you leave me?
Yes. I am a dumb fuck.
That's exactly the word
for someone like me.
Recently, the others
have begun to feel uncomfortable.
I'm an imbecilic dumb fuck.
I was not even capable of true emotions.
You let me make
something very clear to you.
As we sit here
while my mother is out there dying
And she really is
It's a nightmare, right?
It's the most horrible thing
that can happen in your life.
And I'm just sitting here with you
not able to fucking help at all.
Nothing I can do.
I'm not even sure
if I'm capable of producing simple tears.
Don't even know how to make myself cry.
And I'm not even sure
if it's even possible
for me to have fundamental,
simple emotions.
I don't care.
You know I feel absolutely nothing at all?
I'm broken inside.
A piece of loose trash.
Misha.
I'm in love with you.
And I don't love you.
[door opens and closes]
[coughing]
[Marina] He won't leave her here.
He's gonna drag her body
bobbing along wherever he goes.
Mark my words.
Let's spend the night here tonight
and then, in the morning,
we'll make a decision.
[yelling] Don't try to calm me down!
[sobbing]
That stench is everywhere, it's horrible!
That smell that smell
That smell is horrible,
it's all over everything!
It smells like death, like dead bodies.
I can't stand it anymore!
We might be dragging a body as well.
I mean, the baby could be dead, you know?
Why don't I feel it?
I haven't felt anything.
Do something!
Please! Be a man! Do something!
[sobbing]
Please, let's go.
Wherever. Anywhere.
I'm begging you.
Please, let's go.
[Boris] So the only way
to reach the lake is through here.
There's another road to the east here.
But it's not really there
because it's overgrown.
[camera clicks]
But the ice is safe.
You'll be able to walk.
As for the van, I'm not so sure.
You should dump it on the bank.
From there, it's a half-mile walk.
[Leonid] All right, you know what?
I'm not great with words.
[exhales heavily]
You know, Sergey
when we were
we were all first heading out
I figured
that you'd be the first one to quit.
Because you have two pairs of eyes on you.
I mean, no offense.
But what do you know,
you were a bit of a surprise.
Boris I really wanted
to go fishing together.
Of course, we still could if you
if you get to the place. [chuckles]
Have a fire and soup.
[clears throat]
There's a a joke.
The man says, "Honey?"
She replies, "What is it, pumpkin?"
"We have to break up.
We're different kinds of food."
[chuckling]
It's funny, right, hon?
All right, that's it. Let's go.
Polina, let's go.
[melancholy music playing]
Sure you don't want to go with them?
[Boris praying indistinctly]
[Boris] No evil shall befall thee.
Neither shall any plague
come nigh thy dwelling.
- The angels shall look down upon thee
- [laughing]
[Boris] Sergey!
Remember that time we were hunting?
I was about ten.
Did God make you get hammered
and shoot me in the leg?
- What are you saying?
- [Sergey laughing]
Would you believe? It just popped
into my head yesterday, all of a sudden.
It was like a memory
got suddenly unlocked.
Hey, what did you say about that gun?
It's a simple piece,
but you have to be careful, yeah?
Speaking of, where is that gun?
Did you drink it away?
Sergey, what is this?
You picked the cartridge open back then.
That was all.
Yeah, yeah, that's what I believed
after you had
thoroughly convinced me of it.
But then God on high helped me to see.
- Sergey, stop it, don't
- What is it?
You can see the light,
a mathematician with 20 years
of experience, but I can't?
- Which one is our refuge here? This one?
- Don't touch anything here.
[Sergey] Who makes a man
shoot his own family?
- I thought we'd all just die out.
- [Boris] Don't.
You know, the population pressure
and all that Darwinism bullshit.
But no, wait, thank God, Daddy's here!
We're all right.
He's gonna pray and make it all disappear.
A plague won't happen here.
It won't catch us, right?
Because you have
the hand of God protecting us.
[scoffs]
[Boris] By the will of the Lord
Who are you talking to?
There's nobody there.
It's even worse if there is a God.
Just someone sitting there,
drunk, rubbing his hands,
"Maybe I'll kill someone today.
I'll blow down this door.
Kill this lady whose son
has never harmed a person at all."
[Boris] Lord Almighty,
maker of Heaven and Earth
Your precious God won't help her.
[Boris]look down on us sinners.
There's nobody left there to help.
[Boris praying indistinctly]
God didn't send this only to you.
[coughing]
[sobbing]
[thud]
[knocking on door]
One minute.
[banging]
Hold on, I'm coming.
[banging continues]
- What are you doing?
- Let me in.
- You can't come in. Go for a walk.
- Let me in.
[Pavel] Stop. You have to stop this.
What's going on in there?
Her system is still fighting.
She's strong.
We'll see how she does.
Do you happen to know
what blood type she is?
- A, I think.
- You sure?
Yeah, I'm sure. Let me in.
No, you need to give me
more time in here alone.
I'll come get you.
- [melancholy music playing]
- [inaudible]
[melancholy music continues]
[Ira] Sergey! Sergey!
Hey, you idiot, what did you do?
- [sputtering]
- Oh, my God! What are you doing?
[Sergey gasping]
You know, Marina, I was thinking
Kitten?
You all right?
Marina.
- Wait, wait, wait! Hold on a minute!
- [Polina] Marina!
You're okay. Everything's okay.
[inaudible]
[expectant music playing]
[expectant music continues]
- [screaming]
- [Polina] Listen to me.
[Leonid] Look at me! Marina!
[Polina] Marina, you have to breathe!
- [Marina screaming]
- Easy, Marina. It's gonna be all right.
Oh, my God! Shit!
[all screaming]
Mom.
[door opens]
[Anya softly] Misha.
Misha. Misha.
Mom? Mom.
[somber music playing]
