Tomorrow, When the War Began (2016) s01e04 Episode Script

Episode 4

1 - Why's it called Hell? - The hermit.
A guy goes psycho, kills his family.
Then he went bush where the camp site is.
MAN: Why didn't you shoot him?! After him! Go! Go! And don't come back until you've found him.
- Thanks for inviting me.
- Robyn asked me to invite you.
I didn't know where you guys were.
Everyone's going to end up hating you.
The only person I care about is you.
Things have changed.
We need to change too.
You didn't see my mum? Lee, she'd been shot.
Lee! What do you want? I'm going to kill the Colonel and you're going to help me do it.
Do you remember when we used to laugh and cry? And do you remember When we dreamed of things And places to go We'll stand together and forever Hold on, be strong Things'll be just like they used to be Where we belong In the time that was before.
(GROANS SOFTLY) (JET ENGINES ROAR) (GROANS) Aargh! Far from those who know my name It all starts to feel the same I'm holding on too tight Knuckles turning white I find it hard to trust at all To lose control But I'm closing my eyes and I'm letting go It's too late to turn around Repeat what I've done What if I put my life into your hands? You owe it to yourself Don't let go Ben Christie.
You owe it to yourself Don't let go ELLIE: (READS) I'm Ben Christie and this is my story.
It seems so long ago when my wife and I I watched your back and you felt my stare But you never turned around And your voice cut through the sound - Lee! - Hey.
(ROBYN LAUGHS) Hey.
- We were so worried about you.
- Your leg looks better.
It is.
I found some antibiotics and painkillers at home.
Where's Ellie? She went that way.
Thanks.
I'll be back soon.
You OK? I will be.
Far from those who know my name.
Lee.
It's the hermit's hut, isn't it? His name was Ben Christie.
There was a bushfire.
His wife and little girl were badly burned.
He only did what he did to stop them suffering.
I think I understand why he did it.
I'm really sorry about your mum.
I thought you were gone for good.
I was.
Why did you come back? We should go.
The others will be worried.
At peace with yourself May the sun never set on you Or the feeling of our boundless love Not every day will be blessed Free of hardship and regrets That's why you must not forget The feeling of the boundless love Time has a way Of putting people in their place Make sure that you leave some space I don't want to hurt Robyn.
For that feeling of the boundless love.
We should go back.
(GUNFIRE) Where is everyone? They went to see where that noise was coming from.
- See anything? - Nuh.
If we can hear that gunfire, it means they're getting closer.
Much closer.
They know where we are? No.
If they knew, they'd be on us already.
Where did you get to, anyway? We found the hermit's hut.
This is his journal.
CORRIE: Can I see? What are you thinking? HOMER: I reckon we're done here.
We've been lucky, but now it's time to cut and run.
We go deeper into the valley.
So where's this hermit's hut? Only take what you need, dump everything else.
If we have to run, we might not get much warning and we don't want to be held up trying to decide what we should take.
We need to be mobile from now on, just in case.
You'll be OK.
We're not leaving you behind.
Not that you need me.
You're doing good! We'll have to start rationing food.
There's not a lot left.
The soldiers have cleaned out all the stores.
We need to raid farmhouses and the less we have to go into Wirrawee, the better.
No sense in tempting fate.
This is the second time we've had to leave our home.
Weird, but I'm a little bit attached to it.
So am I.
What's not to love about dirt mattresses and bull ants up your bum? (BIRDS CALL, WATER GUSHES) Didn't peg you for a clean freak.
I'm not.
It used to drive Mum crazy that I wasn't.
What did you do? When your mum died? Um It was intense.
Dad and I fought a lot.
We were just both so angry and sad.
I get that.
I wanted to take off.
Couldn't stand being at home without Mum being around.
If it wasn't for Ellie and her folks .
.
they really kept an eye on us.
I can't believe I'm never going to see Mum again.
Dad's probably in shock.
I should be with him.
At least Dad and I had time to get used to it.
Mum was sick for ages, so we were kind of prepared for it.
You know what she was really rubbish at? (LAUGHS) Cooking.
Even though she owned a restaurant.
I always thought that was a crack-up.
Dad does all the cooking.
- Yeah, his pad Thai is awesome.
- Ohh! She was expert with a knife, though.
Taught me how to julienne carrots.
I'm pretty wicked at it.
When does it get easier? You never get over it.
It changes you.
You find things that make you think of other stuff.
Like a war.
Perfect medicine.
Not.
I went to town.
I was .
.
angry.
I thought of shooting a soldier because of what they did to Mum.
But I saw he had a girlfriend .
.
and I couldn't do it.
I realised I didn't want her to feel as bad as I'm feeling about losing someone you love.
(STERN VOICES) Hurry up, all of you.
(BABY CRIES) Shh.
This'll keep the fever down.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Shh.
I hate this.
I don't mind it, actually.
Don't tell them that, though.
It feels good to be doing something, not just sitting around.
Grandpa used to make me help him on the building sites.
Whatever it is you're doing for the Colonel - It's not what you think.
- It doesn't matter what I think.
I can't help you.
You can.
I want you to get me the poison.
You're joking? There's always someone in my kitchen.
They watch me, but they're not watching you.
My wife meant something to me.
I hope your family means something to you.
(DISTANT SHOUTING) Mrs Maxwell.
I didn't think you would still be here.
Just finishing up.
I'd like you to join me for dinner one evening.
Of course.
(SIGHS HEAVILY) I'm not going to do it.
You are.
No.
If you don't help me, I'm going to tell your husband you're deceiving him.
(WATER TRICKLES) ELLIE: They could have dropped these all over the place from planes.
It doesn't mean they're close.
HOMER: Or they could be on foot and very close.
- We don't know where they are.
- That's the problem.
Yeah, he's right.
We need to find them.
That's the dumbest idea you've ever had, and that's saying something.
They might jump us if we don't know where they're coming from.
We'll take a gun with us.
ELLIE: But if they find us now, we're just runaway kids.
If they find us with a gun, they kill us.
What's the option then? No gun? I'm with Ellie.
ELLIE: Robyn? I can't stop him from going.
So what do you do if you find them? Attack? If I have to.
I'm going.
Hey! We need a break.
Can't work all day in this heat.
I understood you were a farmer, Mr Linton.
You would be used to hard work.
This isn't hard work.
This is hard labour.
MR MAXWELL: Perhaps we could take short breaks one at a time, so progress continues on whatever this is.
What you are building, Mr Maxwell, is a prison.
MAN: Keep going! Keep going! You give your son the first break.
He looks like he needs it.
Have a rest, mate.
Take a break.
You need to tell me what's wrong.
I told you, I don't know.
I just feel weird.
What happened, mate? What's going on? COLONEL: Where are they? I don't know! Are you sure? We were out on the building site and you were fine, same as the day before.
CHRIS: I don't even know them.
They're my sister's friends.
They're not mine.
Are you worried about the cage we're building? No.
CHRIS: Please don't hurt me.
Please.
Was it the Colonel? Something he said? Have you seen the Colonel before? No.
Ididn't .
.
see anyone.
(FAINTLY) Please don't hurt me.
It was dark.
I just .
.
heard him.
- Where are they? - Please! Have you come for another kiss? No, I didn't even know you'd be here.
You're into me though.
Aren't you? I am.
And? You've got to give me more than that.
And .
.
I'm really confused about it.
There's Robyn to think about, and .
.
all I can think about is that soldier.
Ellie, let it go.
I can't! I might have killed her.
It wasn't an accident.
It wasn't to stop her suffering.
I'm the one who made her suffer.
ELLIE: What are you doing? - I'm going to surrender.
- Robyn, no, that's crazy! You don't care what happens to me.
'Course I do! If this is about Lee Not everything is about you, Ellie.
Just wait till the others get back.
We'll talk about it then.
I'm not going to fight about fighting.
People shouldn't kill each other.
That's what I believe.
That's what I'll always believe.
- I know that.
- We all do.
You're always going to side with her.
- That's not true.
- It is.
- You like Ellie.
- Robyn! Don't go.
Please! I'm going to go talk to your mum, OK? - Is it Fiona? Has she been caught? - No, it's Chris.
He freaked out today while we were working.
Is he alright? No, he's a long way from being alright.
He was interrogated when we got here, for hours.
They were after information about Fi and the others.
He thought they were going to kill him.
Who was it? The Colonel.
I need to see Chris.
Where's the poison? (BREATHES SHARPLY) (PANTS ANXIOUSLY) Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy name Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done on earth Can I pray with you? Yes.
BOTH: Our Father, who art in heaven Hallowed be thy Name Thy Kingdom come Thy will be done (SOLDIER SNIFFS) I'm lost.
It's easy to get lost in this bush.
Thank you for praying with me.
It always makes me feel better.
(HELICOPTER BLADES WHIRR IN DISTANCE) (HELICOPTER NEARS) (ROBYN GASPS) (HELICOPTER PASSES OVERHEAD) I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, I'm sorry.
I'm OK.
Are you hiding from them? I left my group.
I was ordered to do things I did not want to do.
It's important to do what you believe in.
Sometimes that means leaving people behind.
I cannot go back.
They will punish me.
They will punish me.
Let's find our way together.
If you like, I can have your son moved off building work.
I wasn't aware he was assigned it.
It's, uh it's heavy work.
Clearly not suitable.
Thank you .
.
but it's good for him to be with my husband.
Good for them to be together.
There wasn't much time for that before.
Ah.
Men's work keeps them from their children.
You have kids? A son.
How old? - He's six.
- It's a nice age.
So, yours is a happy marriage? Yes.
Yes, of course.
And yet, he wasn't with you when all of .
.
this happened.
No.
He was working in the city.
Ah.
Most men are married to the wrong .
.
thing, their job always comes first.
You know, in peace time it's a little easier to delude yourself, but .
.
the rules are very different in a war, as I'm sure you now understand.
We're no longer free to choose .
.
and to define our own destiny.
Who we were before is not who we can be now.
We have to adjust to survive.
Excuse me for a moment.
Sorry to keep you waiting.
You must be hungry.
MAN: I want three of you in compound C, two of you with me.
It's done.
(CHRIS SNORES SOFTLY) (CHRIS SNORES SOFTLY) I still watch Corrie sleep.
She doesn't know I do it.
Chris caught me checking in on him at home one night.
Told me to go away.
I don't think he'd do that now.
This war.
It's stealing our kids' childhoods.
Teaching them to be scared.
We'll never stop feeling their pain, will we? Why would we want to? I'm going crazy without Fi.
You must be about Corrie too.
I am.
I mean, Corrie .
.
she's the reason for everything.
(BOTH LAUGH SOFTLY) I see you You're still hurting I've added to your burdens Remember when And this means that you're going to live a very long life.
- How do you know all this stuff? - (LAUGHS) Mum showed me.
She learnt when she was travelling.
All the splendour The future's in our hands.
I've given up on that gold Of the fables that we were told Stop! We've been walking all night and we haven't found anything.
Hell's obviously not in any danger.
The further we go, the harder it is to walk and we didn't bring any food and I'm tired and I'm not going to sleep on possum turds.
What about kangaroo turd? - Or wombat? - Stop! It is getting harder to walk.
(SIGHS) OK.
Let's head back.
What's that? - Looks like bandicoot - Kevin! (ALL PANT) - I'm going in.
- No, no, no, no, no! No! Homer! Stay down.
There'll be food and ammo down there.
Corrie, no.
Corrie! Down! Get down! (IMITATES BIRD CALL) Aargh! Go, go, go! Go! Rebels.
Stop or we'll shoot! (GUNFIRE) (SCREAMS) Come on! - Come on, let's go! - Fi! - Homer! - Fi! Come on! Come on! - Come on! - Come on! You didn't do it! He's alive! I did.
It couldn't have been enough.
Why should I believe you? Because I want him dead as much as you do.
Work! - Fi waited for him.
- What? Back there, when the soldiers were firing.
Would you have waited for me? You wouldn't have, would you? You couldn't wait to get away from me.
Even before all this.
You were going overseas.
We wouldn't have been in that situation if you didn't shoot that guy.
- I was protecting you! - I don't need you to protect me! I want to break up.
Fine.
Let's break up.
(GUNSHOT) (GASPS) FI: Corrie, let me see.
It's OK, I can get up.
Agh! I see you You're still hurting I'll get Ellie, OK? CORRIE: Kevin! I've added to your burdens Remember when we were younger We dreamt about all the splendour I've given up On that gold Of the fables that we were told Typical.
Came to say, "I told you so".
We need to get her to a hospital.
No.
We don't know what they'll do to her.
We know we can't do anything.
Just leave me somewhere.
They'll find me.
We're not leaving you anywhere.
- Ellie! - She's right.
I'm going with her.
I'm taking her.
No-one else.
- Let's get her to the Landie.
- No.
No.
I've had you locked in this prison So long that I forgot the reason I'm handing you the keys I'll find my peace in knowing you're released I see it now I'm learning - The seasons - Corrie! Are turning Go on now, I hear it calling Captive heart Got to let you be 'cause this is pulling us apart Captive heart What are you doing in here? What's this? KEVIN: Help! Help! - Stop! - I need a doctor.
- I need a doctor, please.
- Move, move.
Put her down.
Gently.
Just gently.
That's it.
- What happened? - She's been shot.
- What's her name? - Corrie Mackenzie.
Don't! Corrie! - Don't move! - Please, please, please! - I hear it calling - Sorry.
Captive heart DOCTOR: Corrie, can you hear me? Got to let you be 'cause this is pulling us apart.
Fi, are you OK? Fi, what happened in there? It's not going to help.
- Let her go.
Come on.
- You had no right! Kevin might be out of reach at the showgrounds.
But the hospital's on the edge of town.
You want to bust her out.
I just don't think you should guilt trip people like that.
- Guilt trip? - They're your friends.
Of course they were never going to let you do this on your own.
We'll meet you back here, OK? Nothing will go wrong.
