Too Good to Be True (2024) s01e03 Episode Script

Episode 3

1
SIMONE: If the door is shut,
it's off limits,
and you don't enter
this section of the property
under any circumstances.
You know Elliot
has a total of 16 cars?
Lucky him, eh?
- He said I can work on one with him.
- Let's not push our luck.
He likes me.
- It was my mother's.
- It's beautiful.
RACHEL: Why are you doing this?
ELLIOT: I like helping people like
People like me?
Mum!
Why did he have to smash it up,
you psycho shit!
You can stay at mine.
- I can't ask that of you.
- But you haven't asked.
I've offered.
Liam!
What the hell
do you think you're doing?
We're all right, aren't we?
Maybe this was a bad idea.
- What is it?
- My parents.
I lost them in a fire.
Oh, Elliot, I'm so sorry.
He's not Liam's dad, my ex.
He's just a very bad decision.
Well, we all make them.
[THEME]
[MUFFLED TV PLAYS]
[BIRDSONG]
Oi! You! Feet! You can't just
make yourself at home.
Elliot told me to.
He's in the kitchen making coffee.
Yeah. I know.
Where did this come from?
He said I could use it.
He's been helping me
with a project for school.
[EXHALES]
It's about favourite pets.
- Who is this?
- Elliot when he was my age.
Really?
He was born in Ireland, then
they came here to live on a farm.
This dog was his dad's sheepdog.
Whose is that?
Hm? Oh, I found it in the wardrobe.
You can't
just make yourself at home.
Little smart arse!
- Morning.
- Morning.
Coffee?
Please.
You don't mind, do you?
I wasn't sure if it broke
one of Simone's
employer-employee protocol things.
I don't really wanna be around
when she finds out
what happened last night.
About that.
Hey, no. You don't
need to give me the big talk.
I mean, this must happen
all the time, right?
You ship in a new cleaner and the
next thing you know, she ends up
This doesn't happen all the time.
I really haven't been with anyone
since Olivia and I separated.
I enjoyed last night.
Yeah, me too.
No regrets?
No, not so far.
Great.
Then you'd better start packing.
Hm?
There's somewhere I
wanna take the two of you.
Somewhere special to me.
Yeah, but what about my flat,
finding somewhere to stay?
Figure it out when we get back.
Yeah, but in case you've forgotten,
I'm your cleaner.
Oh, yeah.
I've just given you a holiday.
Pack one.
So, this is where I come
when I don't wanna be found.
[BIRDSONG]
Oh. No use to you here. No signal.
[SHE CHUCKLES]
What's in there?
Unfortunately,
that's the toilet block.
I keep some tools in it
and an old Land Rover.
Come on, we'll get the bags in
a minute, I wanna show you around.
Wait till you see this.
Cool!
Whoa!
You weren't kidding
about it being off grid.
Yeah.
Shall I show you your room?
[EXHALES]
Here you go.
You can use them if you like.
Won't the other boy mind?
They're yours now.
You're upstairs.
Do you like it?
Oh! It's amazing.
I'll sleep on the pull-out.
Did you see that?
I thought I saw someone.
Probably just walking their dog.
Right, I'll get the bags, and
then we're gonna catch our dinner.
Catch?
Hm-mm.
[SHE CHUCKLES]
- LIAM: loads of fish.
- I know you will.
More than you.
Oh. Do you want to make it
a competition?
Yeah!
[CHATTERING CONTINUES]
Be careful. You have
to look for those things.
I thought I'd lost you there.
I'm giving Liam his first lesson
in foraging.
Death caps. You wanna avoid those.
They can kill you in 48 hours.
Here you go.
Keep spoiling me, I'm
definitely gonna get used to it.
Where's Liam?
Looking at the old Land Rover
in the garage.
I'll get dinner started.
You know you don't have to sleep
on that pull-out thing?
Unless you're
having second thoughts.
No.
Is it Liam, then?
I just don't wanna ruin this
by rushing things.
[SHE LAUGHS]
So, hiring me out of the blue,
bringing me all the way out here,
that's your idea of
taking things slowly, is it?
[HE CHUCKLES]
You know,
I reckon Liam will be busy with
that car for at least 20 minutes.
- [SNAPPING NOISE]
- [GASPS]
Mum?
Elliot?
[RUSTLING]
[HE PANTS]
[RUSTLING GETS LOUDER]
Oh! Hello.
Good boy. Where are you going?
[DOG BARKS]
[SHOUT FROM DISTANCE:] Mum!
Liam?!
Liam!
Where are you?
Mum!
Liam.
Darling, I'm here. Are you all
right? Have you hurt yourself?
My ankle.
- [SHE SIGHS]
- Mum look.
They're your dogs?
Brandy and Whiskey.
Rubbish names, I know.
They loved this place.
Made sense to bury them here.
At the same time?
No, years apart.
They were inseparable.
Thought they'd want to be together.
- How's the ankle?
- OK.
Thank God you didn't break it.
Who owns the dog I saw?
Whoever you saw
walking earlier, maybe.
- Was that one a puppy?
- Brandy?
No. Just little.
- And very old.
- Hm.
Think you can walk back?
Here, let me.
Hup.
- There you go.
- Thanks.
You should be proud of him.
I am.
I do worry about him, though.
You know, how much time he spends
in his own little world.
He's got you.
I know. But he needs some
more mates his own age.
Thank you for helping him
with his project, by the way.
I enjoyed it.
He's only got me
and I'm useless at technology.
As for Kieran
Were you together long?
Couple of years.
Long enough.
Has there been anyone since?
Sorry, that's none of my business.
No.
Not really.
I guess I don't
trust myself anymore.
Not to make the same mistake again.
Anyway, enough about me.
- Your turn.
- What do you wanna know?
The fire.
When you were a little boy.
What happened?
I told you.
No, not really.
I'm sorry, if you don't
want to talk about it
No.
I want you to know.
Growing up, I was a bit of a loner.
Just me and my parents.
And about a hundred sheep.
People used to say they couldn't see
what my mum saw in my dad.
She was a bit of a big deal
where we were from.
In the village
they used to always say that
she'd settled for less
by marrying him.
But for a while,
things were good between them.
Then the fights started.
Then the fights got more often.
My dad drank and when he drank,
he got angry.
One day I came
home from school early
and I heard my mum
talking on the phone.
Talking about all the things
she regretted,
making plans about leaving him,
moving back to Ireland
and starting again.
About a week later,
I found her packing.
And I couldn't understand
what was happening,
why she hadn't told me
that we were leaving.
And then it hit me.
I wasn't.
I was one of her regrets.
I pleaded with her, I begged her
not to leave, but it
made no difference.
She was gonna start again,
somewhere new.
Without me.
And that's when my dad got back.
When he realised what was happening,
something snapped in him.
He forced us into a bedroom,
he locked the door,
and my mother was screaming.
The next thing, he was pouring
something over the door,
over the hallway,
all around the house.
- [SCRATCHING OF MATCH]
- And that's when I heard it.
In seconds,
the whole house was up in flames.
I remember the smoke, the heat
my mother screaming for me
to do something.
So I broke the bedroom window
managed to open it a crack
and I crawled through.
I pleaded with my mum
to come with me, but
the window was jammed
and there was no way
she was gonna get through it.
I can still see the panic
in her eyes.
I thought that if I could just get
back inside
everything would be OK,
that I could get her out.
But at that point,
the building was in flames.
So I just stood there
and listened to my mother scream
till eventually it stopped.
Afterwards,
the newspapers called me a hero.
"The boy who tried to save his mum."
But I wasn't a hero, I was a coward.
God, no.
If I was brave,
I would have saved her.
But instead, I let her die.
It was my fault.
[DISTANT SCREAM]
[HE GASPS]
[BIRDSONG]
Hm.
- Liam with you?
- I thought he was still in bed.
I'll check by the river.
OK. Li?
Liam!
Liam?
Liam!
RUSTLING
- [CRACK OF BRANCH]
- Liam?
[SHE SIGHS]
Liam, where have you been?
I was worried sick.
You were asleep
so I went to explore.
- Look at you, you're all wet.
- I slipped in the stream.
When I was on my way back,
this woman came over.
- Woman? What woman?
- Dunno.
She started asking my name,
who we were, why we were here.
- Probablt just a nosy neighbour.
- I said I had to get back.
[FOOTSTEPS]
There you are. Your mum was worried.
He fell in the stream. Numpty!
Go on inside and change
before you catch your death.
This is all I've got.
- You didn't pack anything!
- That's all right.
There's some of Alfie's stuff
still in the drawer.
We'll find you something.
On holiday?
Just a few days. Came up yesterday.
Oh, I thought you didn't sound like
you're from round here.
Mind you, I can talk.
Moved here from Manchester.
Oh, you must love it.
Don't know. Bit boring,
to be honest. Where are you staying?
The house in the woods by the river?
The log cabin?
That's right.
Are you ready?
All done.
- RACHEL: Lovely meeting you.
- You too, love.
Mum, look what Elliot bought me
from the second-hand shop.
It's an old SLR camera with a 50mm
lens and a built-in light meter.
Wow!
- You really didn't need to.
- Oh, it wasn't that much.
It'll be good for school projects.
Come on.
Well, thank you. Again.
The woman in the shop
asked where I was staying,
went kind of weird when I told her.
Did something happen up there?
There was an older house
on the site when I bought it.
I knocked it down.
Maybe it was something to do
with that.
When I was your age, my mum gave me
a Minolta Maxxum 7000.
Great little camera.
I used to love
going into the fields,
trying to find creatures
to photograph.
- Where does the picture come up?
- Oh, my word!
You've not taken a photo on a real
camera before, have you?
To be fair, darling, I've not seen
one myself in a while.
A dying art, photography.
A few of the girls
at the cleaning agency
fancy themselves as influencers.
I think
they'd argue with you on that.
I'm not sure selfies count.
See, here. Turn this
until the image is nice and sharp
when you're looking through.
I don't think it's working.
[EXHALES]
What is it? Do I look that bad?
Course not. You're beautiful.
Mum, can I go and take
some photos in the woods?
- Well,
- That's a great idea.
I'll go with you. You relax.
LIAM: I was researching
the wildlife in this area
on my phone on the way out,
and apparently, water voles,
otters and hedgehogs
are native to these woods.
Oh, yeah?
I'd love to see an otter.
Did you know otters hold hands
when they sleep so
they don't float away?
I did hear that. Maybe we'll see
some back at the river.
Oh, look! I think that's a rabbit.
- Why don't you go and see?
- OK.
Elliot, come look at this!
I got these at that shop.
I nearly had to sell your car
to pay for 'em.
You OK?
It's nothing.
Hey, come on, tell me.
I get like this
when I have to go back.
Oh.
I'm sorry.
I feel like I've stirred things up
for you, you know
Talking about the fire.
I'm glad you know.
Breaks my heart
the thought of you going through
that at the same age as Liam.
- Who looked after you afterwards?
- I went into care for a while.
That didn't work out. I ended up in
a boarding school back in Ireland.
I think that's why
I built this place.
I wanted to live
in the middle of nowhere again.
Like I was before.
I can trust you, can't I?
Why do you ask?
Can I?
Of course!
Good break?
You can answer that.
Amazing.
I hate to be the grinch,
but there are quite a few matters
requiring your attention.
12 seconds, Simone.
New personal best.
- You don't mind, do you?
- Of course not.
LIAM: Can I work on my car?
I downloaded a video
on sanding down the paintwork.
Absolutely. Just
Don't go near the welding torch.
I won't.
Think we need to make room
on the board for this one.
- What?
- I'm impressed.
You settled in
faster than I thought.
[SCOFFS]
I, erm
I had a look through the footage
from Rachel's flat.
What footage?
From the TV.
I asked Craig to send it over.
For what reason?
I wanted to check
if I'd missed anything.
[SLAMS DRAWER]
You didn't tell me it wasn't
her ex who smashed the place up,
it was two kids
I've never seen before.
He had someone do it for him
so he wouldn't be recognised.
You don't think
we should tell the police?
That we've been using
illegal surveillance?
Anyway, I'm taking care of it.
How?
I'm asking Rachel to move
in with me. Permanently.
What?!
I've told you about her past.
She's completely unreliable.
And I've told you,
I don't want to discuss it.
- What's going on, Elliot?
- Meaning?
When you met Rachel,
you said you felt sorry for her.
Next thing I know,
you're moving her in,
you're asking me to set up
a trust fund for her kid.
Is it all really just
cos you wanna fuck her?
Be careful now, Simone.
You asked me to check her out.
You pay me
to protect your interests.
Why aren't you letting me do my job?
You brought her to me.
She's no longer your concern.
- Rachel?
- In here.
What are you doing?
Well, I've missed two days.
I'm making a start.
No, no, no. Obviously,
you don't have to do that anymore.
What? Come on, it's my job.
So I'll get Simone
to find you something else.
Something that challenges you.
You're giving me a new job,
just like that?
Well, you said you didn't wanna
spend the rest of your life cleaning.
That you wanted to make
something of yourself.
Yeah, I know,
but I didn't expect it to be now.
Start believing in yourself. I do.
Gosh, you realise Simone's
gonna hate me even more?
She doesn't hate you.
She's distrustful. I pay her to be.
Right, well, if you're forcing me
to sit on my arse all day,
I'll make a start
finding a new flat.
Well, I was thinking about that.
I want you to move in here.
What, stay in your annexe?
Move in properly.
With me.
- I know it's fast.
- Yeah, it is a bit.
But I feel like I know you.
Like I've always known you.
Think about it.
OK.
Yeah?
- Yeah, I'll think about it.
- I'd better go.
- Shut up!
- I know!
Well, what did you say?
I'll think about it.
What? Why?
Well, what do you think,
I barely know him.
No, you're right. I tell you what,
bring your stuff to mine.
I'll move in with him.
Oh, I'd better go.
Thanks to you buggering off, I've
got twice the amount of rooms to do.
Oh, wait, Jas, have you heard
anything about Kieran?
Disappeared off the face
of the Earth.
He knows better than to show
his scrawny mug again.
Oh yeah, invite me over
for dinner on Sunday
and get me the job
as his new cleaner!
- Love you.
- Love you.
Who the fuck are you?!
I was Elliot's wife.
You're Olivia?
Listen to me.
Elliot isn't who you think he is.
You've got to get out.
Now.
What has Elliot told you about me?
You can't
just walk in here like this.
Let me guess, you met him once,
maybe twice,
and the next thing,
you're moving in with him.
How did he persuade you?
You got sacked from your job?
You couldn't pay your rent?
My flat was broken into by my ex,
not that that's
any of your business.
You know your ex broke in?
Someone saw him?
You don't see it, do you?
This is what he does.
He makes you depend on him,
and before you know it,
- you're locked away, here.
- You need to go.
Listen to me.
You can't trust a single word
he tells you.
He's a pathological liar.
When I finally realised
I tried to leave.
He hunted me down,
he took Alfie off me.
Up to your room.
Mum, it's her.
The woman from the woods.
That was you?
I didn't mean to scare him,
I just
wanted to see. I needed to know
if Elliot was doing it again.
Leave, now, please.
Or I'll call the police.
You know he can see everything?
He's watching us right now.
For Liam's sake,
leave while you still can.
It's OK.
Are you OK?
I came as soon as I could.
We need to talk.
- Alone.
- SIMONE: That won't be necessary.
Simone, will you just fuck off?
Where's Liam?
In his room, packing. We're leaving.
What?
No. Ra-Rachel, listen
She said you'd be watching.
You've got cameras everywhere!
[HE LAUGHS]
Of course I've got security cameras.
What, you think
I've been spying on you?
- Have you?!
- No!
Look, let's just sit down
and talk about this rationally.
She said she tried to leave
and you hunted her down.
The police tried to find her
for her own safety, for Alfie's!
[SIGHS]
Olivia wasn't well.
OK?
Mentally.
And one day she just disappeared.
Eventually,
they tracked her down at the cabin.
She cut her wrists while Alfie was
playing in the next room.
That's what the woman in the shop
was talking about.
I'm sorry.
I shouldn't have kept it from you.
- Why did you?!
- I don't know! I
I was frightened
you were gonna react like this.
Afterwards, Olivia was sectioned.
She still blames me
for everything that happened.
And ever since,
any time I've even thought
about trying to see someone else,
she turns up and she scares
the shit out of them, like this.
I had to get a restraining order.
You can ask Simone
if you don't believe me.
I I can't believe I put Liam
and you in danger.
I can look after Liam.
I've had enough practice.
Look, if you want, I'll go
somewhere else just for a few nights
and you can stay here.
I'll put security on the gates,
whatever you want.
It's fine, I can look after myself.
I just need some
space right now, OK?
At least let me drive you.
I need to know you're safe.
Until the police pick her up.
No, it's fine.
I'll call you tomorrow, OK?
I'm gonna grab a few bits
and get Liam ready.
Rachel.
You do believe me?
Of course.
Why do we have to go?
Is it because of that woman?
Darling, I'll explain
everything later, OK?
I promise. It's all OK.
Call me as soon as you know
where you're staying.
Yeah.
I don't know which is worse
Kieran being out there or Olivia.
Hey.
There's a rally
coming up for vintage cars.
Maybe we could go together
when you're back.
OK, time to go.
[ENGINE STARTS]
[SIGHS]
-
- LIAM: OK.
How is he?
Confused and scared.
[SIGHS]
God, I can't believe
I've done this to him again.
Hey! You haven't done anything.
Look
Are you sure his ex
is telling the truth?
Yeah.
No. I dunno.
I mean, what she said about
the flat being trashed, Jas,
what if it wasn't Kieran?
Yeah,
but if she was really sectioned,
he took a restraining order out,
can you really trust
anything she says?
[SHORT KNOCK AT DOOR]
That'll be room service.
I thought you guys might be hungry.
I'll get it.
There's no-one there.
What?
Who are they from?
Him?
Doesn't say.
[JAS SIGHS]
Right, I'll go down,
find out who sent them.
Hey.
It's gonna be OK.
Police.
Yes, please come quickly.
My ex-wife, she broke into my home
and she attacked me.
Tony House, Shepherden Brook.
But please hurry! I'm bleeding.
[GLASS SMASHES]
[HE GROANS]
[EXHALES]
I think Elliot
is lying about his past.
- Some things just aren't adding up.
- What things?!
Deborah? I wondered if I could
speak to you about Elliot Fielding?
I'm sorry, it's, er
it's completely inappropriate.
All I want to know
is why you stopped treating him.
Hey, buddy.
Elliot? What are you doing here?
Your mum asked me to collect you.
Hop in.
I'm still trying to love you.
Even though you hurt me,
I'm still trying to love you.
Elliot, if you love Liam,
let me take him home.
I knew it.
I knew.
