Top Gear: Extra Gear (2016) s01e06 Episode Script

Episode 6

1 Hi, I'm Rory Reid.
It's the end of term, we've finished our exams, some of us even won medals at sports day.
The bad news is it's the last in the series.
The good news is that we've got an awesome show for you.
Tonight, we reveal the Stig's lap in the Focus RS.
We'll show you behind the scenes of how this Top Gear showroom comes together.
I'll take Sabine out in the Mustang to pull a few Gs.
We head to Silverstone to find out what the hardcore MG fans make of the Abingdon Edition.
And Chris has a final victim to take around the track.
Right, this is Extra Gear! As you'll have noticed, each week we are lucky enough to be surrounded by some amazing cars, and there's a lot of work that goes into getting them here, they don't just appear overnight.
Here's a look behind-the-scenes of how it all comes together.
It's the start of the day for the final show in the series and, while most of the team are battling the snooze button, the Top Gear car team are getting things ready for the show.
It's 6am and I've got a bucket of keys here.
It's about £2 million worth.
They've all been sitting in this hanger overnight.
My first job is to open this up and get them all in position for the show.
There's a lot to do.
As you can see, it's quite full at the moment and we've got cars arriving.
I've got to get quite a lot of these out, so I can fit these ones in and then jiggle them around so they're in the right position.
At the moment we've got most of the cars in the studio, but we're still waiting for the car transporter.
Hopefully, it's going to come along any second now because we need to get them to the studio.
Across the series, the Top Gear studio sees over £40 million worth of cars go through its doors, so getting them here safely, really, is serious business.
I'm Sarah Ross.
Myself and my husband Peter are in charge of logistics for all the studio cars.
Today we've got five cars going in.
There's so much car wrangling going on though that sometimes we even need to get stuck in.
Rory, I need you to move this car.
- Sure.
On the track? - No, just a few feet forward, down there.
- Literally there? - All you need to is first gear.
Happy to help, happy to help.
All right.
Right there.
No job too small.
Come and have a look at this.
This is the kind of thing we need to get rid of.
That cannot be allowed to happen on Top Gear.
It's been a really, really hectic morning, but we've managed to get all of the cars into the studio now.
You can see them all behind me.
It's just about to start.
Hats off to those guys.
I mean, we get the glory, but we couldn't do that without them, honestly.
Time now for a man who loves cars so much that he lives, eats and sleeps in one.
It's actually quite a sad story.
We all know what the i8 is about.
It's a very, very clever, brilliant road car.
BMW smashed it.
I'll give them that.
£105,000 for the cleverest sports car you can buy.
However, its biggest test is here on a wet track.
Is it any fun to drive? Let's see what happens.
I'm backing into this corner.
Oh, God, it's understeering.
I must be able to do something about that.
Come on.
We've got this 1.
5 litre turbo motor behind my head.
That's making about 224 horsepower, but there's a lot more electricity on the front axle.
It's understeering, it's traction control.
I'm not enjoying that.
Just under 1.
5 tonnes.
It will do 0-60 in 4.
4 seconds.
It's genuinely fast.
That noise is mostly fake, it's coming out of the speakers.
This really is next generation.
It depends whether you think that adds to the driving experience, I suppose.
For me, on this wet track, it's a bit It's efficient and good, but I'm not having a right laugh.
Can you tell? The big test is -- if it's holding me on traction underpower, what happens if I back off? Am I a bit silly going through here? Yes! Baby, a big slide in the i8.
I never thought I would do that.
You can tell I'm quite surprised.
It's not as light on its feet as I'd like.
It's under 1.
5 tonnes.
There's a 1.
5 litre turbo charge motor behind me.
That makes 228 horsepower, which isn't too bad, actually.
It's slippery here.
It's really Oh, it's really slippery there and there! I survived.
Rory, have your car back.
Absolute hooligan! Amazing.
Who knew you could slide an i8? He's going to park up.
He'll be back soon.
Earlier, we saw the MGB in action.
I thought it might be a good idea to drive it to Silverstone to get some genuine reactions.
We've seen what Mr Evans thinks of the MG Abingdon Edition.
The guy loves it.
You can kind of see why.
I mean, you've got epic performance, coupled with this really beautiful, classic design.
In theory, it's the perfect package.
Woo-hoo! That's quick! It's definitely not the most refined car in the world.
Steering wheel is positioned slightly offset to the centre.
On top of that, the pedals are pushed over to the right-hand side.
Your body never feels quite comfortable driving this thing.
The problem is a lot of classic car owners think this kind of car is blasphemy.
A little bit like taking a can of spray paint and trying to improve the Mona Lisa.
It's just not going to go down well in some circles.
What I want to find out is what other people think of it.
I'm on my way to MG Live at Silverstone, the home of the British Grand Prix.
This is the largest gathering of MG owners in the world.
This is absolutely incredible.
It's just a sea of MGs, it's a sea of steel and chrome and flat caps and beards.
I seem to be getting quite a lot of stares.
Maybe they know this isn't a true MG.
Maybe they just like the car.
Let's go find out.
- Hello, guys.
Do you know what I've got? - It's a Frontline car, isn't it? - It is.
You know your stuff.
- Yeah, we like these.
- This is a modern take on an MGB, isn't it? - It is, yeah.
- Nice bit of kit.
- It is.
It is beautiful.
That is the ultimate, really, in MGBs.
- Would you have one? - No, I like original cars.
- You like originals? - Yeah.
- How much is this? - Well, why don't you guess? - Throw a number out there.
- I don't know, 80 grand? Higher.
It costs a fair bit of money.
- Right, so you could have 90 or 100 rescue cars like this - Yes.
Yeah, or one of these.
What would you go for? So a mixed bag from the punters, but what do the club's top brass think? I've got an Abingdon Edition outside.
You've got this old-looking shell with modern interior, modern underpinnings.
It brings the two things together.
I think it's fantastic.
Don't you think it ruins the authenticity of the original? No, not at all.
Is it true to the spirit of the original? Well, it's progress, isn't it? It's keeping the name of MGs going.
I'm always interested to know what MGs would have done if they'd still been going today.
How cool is this? I've been invited to take part on this parade lap at MG Live.
At first I thought they might hate the Abingdon Edition, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
I learned that people in the MG club, they're not elitist, they just want to have fun together as part of a group.
It might not be for me, but it's great that it puts a smile on so many people's faces.
£100,000 to join the tweed cap club.
- Yeah.
- Really? - They're a special bunch.
That's madness.
Let's move on to more tangible things, an affordable five litre V8 engine.
That sounds good, doesn't it? In your film you were a little bit lukewarm about this.
Why, Rory? This is the performance bargain of the year.
35 grand, 416 horsepower.
I can't think of another car that I'd buy for that money that would give me that amount of performance.
The fact is, they just left me a bit cold, man.
I'm used to cars like the V8 F-Type.
You jump in that, you feel special.
You jump in this and it's like - It's watered down.
- £85,000 for your F-Type.
This thing The money is one thing, I'm talking about the passion that you feel when you're in the car.
You don't get it from this.
I've driven it and I do think it's a fantastic handling car.
For the money, it's great fun.
Yeah, it's just a shame is not a real Mustang.
You saw the line lock feature on my Top Gear film this week.
Earlier today I took Sabine out to look at some track apps in more detail.
The new Mustang has got all these so called track apps.
Within track apps you can do things like accelerometer, 0-60 timer, 60-0.
- Line lock, lap timer, launch control.
- Whoa! We can do the acceleration timer.
0-60.
Press OK, accelerate.
3,000rpm.
I'd don't hold the handbrake.
- Woohoo! - And off we we go.
5.
7.
5.
7 seconds.
Let's try and get some breaking Gs on this one.
We pulled 1G through that corner.
Yeah! Yee-ha! Give me more, baby! I love it! Corner.
Don't go on the slippery stuff.
There is so much expensive stuff around.
- Yeah, so much to break.
- Yeah.
Right, shall try one more thing? Let's do the 60-0 timer.
- First, we have to try 60? - Yeah.
- OK.
Just to make sure.
- Is it easy to handle? - It's not too bad.
It's very slippery here.
We're doing 60.
Break! It says, four seconds, 211 feet, 1.
08G.
Everything on the dash.
- Yeah.
- That's amazing.
That's not a bad stop.
There you go.
Sabine, thanks for riding with me.
Oh, it was such fun.
What do you make of all those track apps? Is it too gimmicky? No, I think they're good, fun things on a good, fun car.
- What's not to like? - Yeah, true story.
As you know, Chris and I are pretty busy on Twitter and we couldn't help notice lots of you asking for one thing that was missing after my hot hatches film the other week.
That was a Stig lap in the Focus RS.
Since it's you guys and it's the last in the series, here is that lap filmed a few weeks ago in near-perfect conditions.
Let's have a look.
Launch control in the RS.
Off the line.
Four-wheel traction.
0-60 in a about 4.
7, that thing.
It takes off, man.
Nice and smooth through the first corner there.
A little bouncy.
Using all of the track.
Can I take over and tell the truth now? - It's understeering, it's understeering, it's understeering.
- What are you talking about? - It's still understeering.
- What are you talking about? - It's doing that hoppy thing because it's trying to find grip.
It just looks utterly dull to me, doesn't it? I'd far rather be in a Mustang.
Around the hammerhead and understeer, understeer.
I'll say it again, understeer.
Come on, Rory, find something exciting to say about this understeering car.
- Over to you now.
- He's doing about 120mph through the follow-through right now.
That, trust me, listen to the tyres.
That's the sound of rampant understeer.
There's some more.
A symphony of understeer.
Here we go and we're through the second to last.
Look at that.
Understeer.
Working the understeer.
Over to you, Rory, while I fall asleep.
Round the last corner and over the line! Chris is a hard man to please.
Do you want have a guess at the time? The old Focus did it in 1.
29.
3.
This is going to be quicker.
- What do you reckon? - 27 dead, Rory.
The new Focus did it in 1.
26.
44.
Nearly three seconds quicker.
Amazing.
That puts it between the Lotus Exige and the BMW M3 E92.
- Properly quick.
- That proves that understeer is fast.
Time to bring on two Top Gear heroes.
Give it up for the Queen of the Vomit Comet and the Nuerburgring -- Sabine Schmitz.
And the God of the Goldwing, Head of the Hoonicorn, Prince of the Porsche -- Matt LeBlanc! - Guys, thanks for joining us.
- Absolutely.
I feel like we should discuss the elephant in the room at this point.
That elephant being Chris Harris.
The long jump competition, ladies and gentlemen.
How did you feel he performed? Can't we talk about serious stuff, like proper cars? No, it was serious at the time.
You were taking it pretty seriously.
In fact, on your practice attempt, you'll remember this, Sabine did something very, very strange.
I think we've got a clip of it we can play.
- Oh, no! - This is what Sabine did on her first attempt.
- Please don't! Oh, my God! Holy shit! - That is - There's hope for me yet.
She tried to handbrake it over the top.
She did, didn't she? - What is your excuse for that? What's going on? - There is no excuse.
What happened is I used the handbrake and it didn't went properly back.
It was still in and the left rear tyre was locked and that was the reason why I was sideways all the way up.
More or less.
Style points.
It looked great.
If anybody took it seriously, it was you.
You took it more seriously than anyone.
When you jumped about a foot - .
.
he was so mad.
Remember how mad he was? - Yes! Eddie was mad as well.
He was measuring and watching My plan was to go out in the woods and come back, cos Chris started all the cheating.
You were so mad that you didn't go after Chris.
Yeah, yeah.
I was - I don't talk about it.
- I thought Monkey here was looking for trees.
That didn't go far enough out there.
I said, "Go out there, there's nothing to hit.
" - A win's a win.
- It is.
When people look back at the record books, they won't say that I cheated, they'll say I won.
Credit where it's due.
Well done, Harris.
I think we need to talk about your Porsche film, Matt.
- What went down, man? - It's a great car, that 911.
A really, really fun car to drive.
- You've driven it.
- Oh, I think it's fantastic.
It's the most exciting new car I've driven in ages because it's so basic.
There is no technology really to hide behind.
It's a stick shift car, there's no big aero package on it.
It's loose when you're going quick.
How does that compare with the GT3 RS? To me, that's the one to get, not the R.
The GT3 RS I would say it's a little sharper and more of a track tool.
Whereas you need to delve into the performance of the car more to get it to wander around and get loose and get that hair on the back of your neck stand up.
With the 911 R, there's no Like I said, there's no aero package on it.
It was a loose car.
- You have one, don't you? - Yeah, November.
- What? - You've got one coming.
- Yes.
- A 911 R? - Yeah.
- I'm leaving.
Come on, Monkey, come back.
- There are 990 left.
- I'm seething about that.
There are 990 left.
You can't expect anyone to feel bad for you about not getting to drive great cars.
Everyone is jealous of you, so stop.
And you won the long jump thing.
Just be quiet.
I want to know, guys, what's been the highlight of the season? Sabine, what is the best car you've driven this series? - The Audi R8 was quite fun.
- At Laguna Seca.
- Yeah.
Maybe it was the track as well.
The handling was really great.
- You like Laguna Seca? - Oh, yeah.
- Me too, is closer to my house.
- But on a motorbike, I won't ride it.
- On a bike it's really fun.
It's just like driving down the drain, you fold it over at the top.
It just goes Matt, I think this might be an obvious one.
What's your highlight of the season, car-wise? - I'd say It's got to be the Rialto.
- Goldwing.
It's a toss-up between the 911 R and the Nomad.
The Nomad was a really fun car to spend the week with.
It's just so different and raw and the environment we were driving in, you just had to slide the car around.
It doesn't have the great turning radius, so you kind of need to slide it around the corners and break slide it and stuff.
It's really, really fun to drive.
Mr Supercar, you've got a lot to choose from! - What's the best? - Let me get my violin out.
Hold on.
Do you know what? I love filming the M2 here.
It felt like I'd really joined Top Gear.
Filming at Dunsfold.
I agree with you, it's nice to have a track, a car, and a talented bunch of guys and girls to film it.
I love that.
That was a special experience.
- I think my highlight of the season was - The longjump? We won't discuss that any more.
The Model X was an eye-opener and burning that Hellcat off the line was just insane.
We've definitely driven some amazing things.
It's only right we look at those again in this little highlight package.
In three, two, one, go! - This thing hauls ass.
- Hold on tight to your balls, honey! Oh, we like a bit of that.
It works well.
Whoo! - That's probably straighter than yours.
- Yeah, right! - Phenomenal! - Whoo! I love that! Out, go out! - So, Norman.
- Stop scratching those gears.
I'm not as good as you! You don't want to mess it up.
You don't want to go on the grass! You, what are you looking at? When I released my rap album, it's going to be Citrus Balls.
Oh, Fuck! Five million nicker and the rear-view mirror fall off.
That is a big dude.
Go, go! Can you see how much fun I'm having? This car is ridiculous! - I needed that.
- What does this button to? - Don't.
- OK.
So many good cars being released later this year.
I want to find out what we're itching to get our hands on.
- Sabine, what you want to drive? - I would say the Ford GT.
They did a great job at Le Mans.
That's a proper supercar.
They had a fantastic weekend at Le Mans, didn't they? They won, fair play.
Another car at Le Mans which was fascinating and we're hopefully going to get a look at later in the year is this new Bugatti Chiron, the 1,500 horsepower.
They had one at Le Mans before the race.
- Here it is.
- It was doing down the straight, with the CEO driving it, it went 13mph faster than the fastest prototype in the race.
It did 226mph.
How was the performance? - Unbelievable.
- Yeah? - 1,500 horsepower.
Better than the Veyron? It's a Veyron engine plus, with another 300 horsepower.
- Sabine, you don't like the Veyron, do you? - No.
It has so much power, but in the first corner, the traction control was So you don't want to drive this? There was no switch to switch it off.
- I'll happily take it.
- I was upset.
- I'll take it, if nobody wants it.
What about a more basic driving experience? Would you rather have the paddles and the 1,500 horsepower or the 911 R with the stick and the three pedals? I like the experience of driving a stick shift car, I really do, but a paddle shift car is really fun to drive, too.
You don't have to think about anything, just break and point and turn and point.
It takes a lot of that out of the way.
- They are both fun.
- Do you know why? Because the Americans are still a double clutch.
They can't deal with it all.
Exactly.
She loves me, I know.
On that note, a massive thank you to Matt and Sabine and, of course, Chris Harris.
That's it from us this series.
Thank you, guys.
Goodnight!
