The Grid.
Hidden inside the computer.
It was a peaceful world.
Protected by the hero Tron… until the corrupted program Clu seized control.
But the remote city of Argon remained untouched.
For these young mechanics, life was good… until Clu's armies made Argon their new home.
Greetings, programs.
–If Tron were here… –You mean if Tron were alive.
No more games.
Hey, you can't do this… Following the loss of his friend, an ordinary mechanic named Beck decides to fight back.
Tron saved the grid before.
Maybe he could do it again.
This Renegade Tron, whoever he is, he's causing a lot of problems.
His actions caught the attention of someone unexpected.
–I'm not dead.
–Tron.
I need you to help me carry on my name.
Be the next Tron.
1×02 — The Renegade, part1 Tron: Expect your training to be a long, difficult road, Beck.
Before victory, there will be setbacks.
Many of them.
Tron! When does the training start.
Now! So try and keep up.
Don't rely on your light wall.
Learn to control me without it.
Dominate with momentum.
Anticipate.
–You mean like that? –Eyes forward.
This isn't a game, Beck.
–Jump.
–Jump? We can't make that.
You know what you did wrong, Beck? Yeah, I followed you.
You hesitated.
I didn't.
How can I be the next Tron if I can't even keep up with the real one? No one's gonna believe I'm you.
To them, I'm just a renegade program.
I was programmed to tune up engines.
You're more than just a mechanic, Beck.
You surpassed your programming.
You stood up for what you believed in, all on your own.
The uprising needs a hero like you.
What uprising? It's just you and me out here.
Aren't you the one who said others will follow? That the revolution will spread if we ignite the spark? What, you're listening to me now? I almost plunged into the bottom of a canyon.
I don't think I'm cut out to inspire anyone.
Sorry.
–Beck… –What? Your baton… you should probably get that.
Right.
Halt, program.
You're in violation of curfew.
It just gets better and better.
Identify.
Hostile program detected.
Secure sector 12.
Please tell me you're hiding, too.
Woman's voice: Proceed with transport.
Charting flight course.
Confirm.
Woman's voice: Flight course confirmed.
Redirecting.
Congratulations, program.
You just made yourself a prisoner.
This is wrong.
I shouldn't be here.
I didn't do anything.
This is all because of that Renegade.
–The Renegade? –Cool it, Rilo.
Have you forgotten where they're taking us? Each one of us is going to end up de-rezzed.
Have you ever seen anyone derezzed? It's disgusting! What's he talking about? Where are we going? There.
The games.
Approaching Armory 5.
Final approach.
Woman's voice: Armory fourth pier.
Welcome to the Coliseum.
Sorry, boss.
I thought he was with you.
Well, let me know if you see him.
Zed! Laura! Did Beck even bother to come in today? I'm sure he's just taking a break.
Actually, it's just been me and Zed all shift.
We're supposed to meet him at the club later.
Should we be worried? Nah.
I was just gonna let him put up one of my bikes.
My favorite, actually.
Whoa.
What's so special about this old thing? Old thing? Zed, this is Encom 786 1st-gen light bike.
It's one of a kind.
Every component designed for speed.
Yeah, but it doesn't look very safe.
Give me a new model any time.
You can't beat reliable.
I don't want reliable.
I want dangerous.
Mm.
Well, it's nice to see someone's got an appreciation for older technology.
Can you let Beck know it's in my office? I hope he's not getting himself in any trouble.
Woman's voice: Congratulations, programs.
You have been selected for the games.
If I don't survive, that Renegade is to blame.
–Lionel, I told you.
–It's not his fault? The only reason we're here is because the Renegade remodeled Clu's statue.
The next thing I know, they pick me up for breaking curfew.
I lost track of time.
I shouldn't have to die for it.
We'll survive this.
You're not going to die.
For your safety, you are being equipped with battle armor.
Do not attempt to remove your armor.
Processing complete.
Enjoy the games.
All combatants prepare for team battle.
Difficulty level: Extreme.
So, you still think we're gonna survive? In the name of our great leader Clu… Let the games begin! Here they come.
Regiment, positions.
We're not gonna survive two rounds against them! Stick close to me, Rilo.
Attack! Excuse me.
Ugh, great.
Just great.
–Is that for me? –Yeah, why not? Are you here alone, too? Actually, I'm here with my friend, but I'm… I… –Zed.
–I'm Zed.
I'm Zed.
I'm Zed.
Pearl.
Resist! Player 6 deleted.
–Hey, that was good! –We're gonna make it.
Stay close! Last guard deleted.
Advantage challenger.
Rilo! Player 11 deleted.
No! Get down! I couldn't save Rilo.
He's gone.
But we're not.
And neither are they.
Then let's level the playing field.
So the third siren says, “I thought that disk looked familiar.
” I love a program with a sense of humor.
Mind if I borrow him? Just bring him back in one piece.
Whoa, Zed.
What's your secret? You know what they say, Mara.
It's all in the programming.
Well, can you spare some of that programming for one little dance? Dance? You and me? Come on! You owe me! I'm your best friend, Zed.
Right.
Friends… –You, uh… –Whoa! Wanna get out of here? Absolutely.
Who was that girl? Ah, just a friend.
Last guard deleted.
Advantage challenger.
–Hmm, they're good.
–Too good.
Sound the bell.
–But the round… –…is over.
Do it.
Due to technical difficulties, this round will conclude early.
Wow, Argon's beautiful from up here.
It's all right.
Guess I'm just used to it.
Well, it's a lot better than where I'm from.
Where's that? Doesn't matter.
I'm here now.
With you.
So, what's there to do for fun around here? Well, there's the park, but it's closed for curfew.
There's the Coliseum.
Yeah, not my idea of fun either.
Is there any place in the city that's not shut down by the occupation? These are your accommodations, programs.
We have new teammates to break in.
You mean more programs to get derezzed.
Don't tell me you've given up.
We could use you out there.
You're not a bad fighter.
Yeah, tell that to Rilo.
I wasn't programmed for this.
I'm just a mechanic.
So it's like that, huh? No hope? I felt that way once, after we lost the ISO war.
–You fought in the ISO war? –That's right.
Most of my friends fell fighting Clu and his forces.
I started to despair, until the Renegade showed up.
The Renegade? Isn't this all his fault? I don't think so.
If he's willing to risk his life to fight back, then I wanna be right there fighting beside him.
That's why I came to Argon, to join him.
But there's more.
I know who the Renegade really is.
–Who? –We both know.
He's the one program who can save us all, whose name alone inspires hope.
He's Tron.
Tron.
I have to say, this is kind of cool.
There are programs upstairs.
You're authorized, right? So it's okay to go in.
I don't think that's such a great idea.
It'll be our secret.
Tell the program in front of you “Tron lives”.
–What? –Just do it.
Tron lives? Who told you that? What was that? Did you say Tron lives? Talk like that is sedition.
Who said it? Let's go.
Well, this is it, Able's office… central hub of the garage and antiques warehouse.
Actually, a lot of these artifacts are priceless.
I don't know.
Looks like junk to me.
Well, it's getting kind of late.
Uh, uh… Oh.
–You know what this is? –A baton? Well, not just any baton.
This is a Rencon 682.
You mean an Encom 786.
Isn't that what I said? It's one of a kind.
You know, my light cycle's been acting up.
Think you can take a look? I'll have it singing in no time.
Why am I not surprised? So, you two wanna be a team? Then be a team.
–I suppose it could be worse.
–It's worse.
Initiate light cycle challenge.
Three of them, two of us.
Those odds aren't so bad.
But they got bikes.
–Do you trust me? –Do I have a choice? When I give the word, pull as hard as you can.
Now! Rider 2 down.
Come on.
Now this is more like it.
Rider 1 deleted.
Advantage challenger.
I bet you didn't know I'm a mechanic.
A pretty good one, too.
Challengers victorious.
Listen to them, cheering the actions of two conspirators.
This insolence will spread like a plague if we don't end it now.
So, end it! In all fairness to Paige, her plan almost worked.
May I suggest an alternative, general? You know, your bike's in decent shape.
I actually cant find… Then keep it.
I just got an Encom 786.
See ya! Wait! Don't… leave.
Oh, I'm an idiot! General Tesler was quite impressed with your performance.
We rarely get to see such delicious competition.
To thank you, general Tesler's arranged a reward.
Greetings, programs! Behold this momentous occasion! For not only do you share the privilege of seeing two highly skilled combatants battle for survival, but now you can watch as merciful general Tesler allows them to compete for the greatest prize of all… freedom.
The winner of the next round will be released! Who are we fighting? Why, each other, of course.
And to the death.
