Truth Be Told (2015) s02e10 Episode Script

Last Exit...Oakland

Inspector Aames, SFPD.
What happened here?
We had a 911 call.
Officers arrived to find a body.
Neither one is talking.
The deceased is Martin Haywood.
He's former SFPD.
He's a suspect in the
murder of Joshua Keith
and Drew Turney in San Francisco.
Not a word.
Cuff him.
Hey, wait, wait, wait.
What are you doing?
He just
I'll call Mitri.
I'll follow you. I'm right
behind you, Daddy.
I love you.
Aames, what's up?
Martin Haywood is dead. At The Knock.
What the fuck? What happened?
He was stabbed.
Shreve's been taken in for questioning.
Neither he nor Poppy are talking.
Wait, hold on. Poppy was
there? Is she okay?
She's fine. She's, uh
Well, she's in shock.
All right, look. I'll, uh,
meet you downtown.
And hey, thanks for the call.
Trini?
- What? What's going on?
- Listen, sweetheart.
- I gotta go out, okay?
- What?
Now, when I leave,
I want you to lock the door
- and make sure you put on the alarm.
- Yeah, I know.
And I'll text your mom and
let her know I had to go.
- Okay.
- You good?
Yeah. I have crew in the morning,
so I'm just going to bed.
Okay. Well, I'll be back shortly.
I'm on my cell phone, okay?
You need anything, obviously you call.
Dad.
Yeah?
Just be careful.
Please.
Baby, I promise, all right?
Come here. I promise.
- I love you.
- I love you too.
Mmm.
Now you lock that door.
- Lock the door now, please.
- Okay, I'm coming.
Hey. You wanna tell me what happened?
You or official you?
I'm always a cop, Pop.
I'm always my father's daughter.
I'll wait till his lawyer gets here.
All right.
But if Martin Haywood was
all the way out in Oakland
at your family's bar,
I am going to assume he wasn't
there to spread the word of God.
- Hey.
- Watch it, man.
- Give us a minute?
- Yeah.
Come on. Let's talk outside.
Hey.
You all right?
He came at me.
Pinned me down.
Then Daddy came from out of nowhere
and picked up the knife that I dropped.
He was definitely coming after you.
He would have killed me and Daddy both.
I know it. He reached for his gun.
You can work that, right?
I can work the fuck out of that.
This was self-defense.
Let me get in there
and see what I can do.
Everything will be fine.
- It's gonna be all right.
- Officer Sanchez,
please report to the front desk.
Officer Sanchez, please
report to the front desk.
Oh, there's Daddy.
Wait. What's going on?
Shit.
I thought this might happen.
It's called a probable cause arrest.
They can hold him for 48 hours.
Even on Thursdays, it's
Thursday's the worst day to be detained.
He might not see a judge until Tuesday.
So is he being transferred
to Santa Rita?
- You know it.
- Fuck.
That's some bullshit.
And it has nothing to
do with the case itself.
None of you have fans, but
you have a lot of enemies.
Anything we can use to help Daddy?
Mitri's already called twice.
Not yet. But Aames came through
with the Haywood phone
records and cell towers.
Look at this. He followed you
here, across the bridge.
And it looks like he was on our
tail after we left his house.
He hunted me.
Pop,
I found tower pings
that put him in range
of Joshua and Drew's
murders the night of.
But it's too clean.
Something's missing.
Whoa, whoa.
That's Shelter's main line,
the morning after the murders.
Why the hell would he call Shelter?
What?
- Micah.
- Shit.
She always seemed shady to me, Pop.
And that would explain the Shelter
products at Haywood's house.
I need you to confirm he called Micah.
We can't just accuse.
Even better, if we knew
what they talked about.
All right.
It would help to have eyes
and ears inside the place,
- but we'll see if Markus still has an in.
- Okay.
- Hey.
- Just spoke to Lillian.
Daddy called from Santa Rita
this morning. He's fine.
She's trying to get his meds to him.
I took the day off. Let me know
what you need me to do.
Well, I'm going to see Daddy later.
You want to come with me?
No.
Cydie.
No. There is no part of me that
wants to see Daddy like that.
I will see him when he comes home.
You're clear. Go.
Next.
Proceed to the counter.
What are you doing here?
I came to see Shreve.
Look, no matter what's happening
between you and I,
you know I still love him.
I don't know you at all.
Yes, you do.
Next.
Martin Haywood Did he kill Joshua?
Next.
Right this way.
I hate seeing you in here.
I'd stay here if it means saving you.
Oh, don't say that, Daddy.
Micah came to see me.
I saw her.
Let her tell her story.
- I don't trust her.
- Not for her. For you.
See what she has to say.
You don't have to forgive her.
You don't have to understand
her or trust her, but you
you do have to put this all to bed.
I don't wanna open a door for
her to come back through.
Listen to me, baby girl.
I've made mistakes. Some big,
some small. And so have you.
But you've dragged them
behind you your whole life.
Everything you've done has been
because of the year I went to jail.
The year I abandoned you.
- Oh, Daddy.
- Uh-uh-uh. Just
Killing that man, saving you.
I would kill him a million times
if it would help ease some of your pain.
So I need you to ask yourself,
what in Micah's life
made her who she is?
If you don't hear what she has to say,
it'll be the new thing
that you carry with you.
Don't replace one burden for another.
Do you feel me?
God, I love you.
Hey, no touching.
Hey, Shae. This is Markus Killebrew.
Hey, Markus. How you holding up?
Listen, I really need your
help with something.
Okay.
A call came in the day after
Josh and Drew were killed.
8:07 in the morning.
To Shelter's main line.
I need to know where you sent
that call, you understand?
Okay, 8:07 in the morning.
- Let me see what I can do.
- Thank you.
Talk soon.
He didn't deserve this.
A lie Micah told long before she
even met him led to his death.
There's no satisfaction in the answers
if she doesn't admit to that.
Or her involvement.
A single deception destroyed six lives.
Josh, Drew, Rose, Holt, Ramon
Even that lunatic, Martin Haywood.
Seven
if we don't get my father out of jail.
Eight, if you include her own.
Shelter's struggling.
And if she's the alley
cat I believe her to be
that leaves her with
one of her nine lives.
Hmm.
I want her to admit to her lies.
I wanna hear her own it.
This is what you reap, Micah.
What do you want, Poppy?
Why did you steal Rose's life?
You built your empire on her back.
You took her voice. Erased her name.
You're such a hypocrite.
You You wanna talk about erasing
names? What about you?
You moved to New York and
shed any link to your roots,
to your family.
Why did you drop the name Scoville
when you became a journalist?
I took Parnell to feel
close to my mother.
Ah. Poppy Parnell.
Everyone takes a back seat to that name.
That's a lie.
Ingram was right.
He knew you could never fully
commit to him. Only to yourself.
That's why you're alone.
Just like me.
Wow.
Rose told me you'd fight like a
trapped animal if you got cornered.
Who else is gonna do it for me?
Well, not everything was a lie.
I had no family.
My blood family abandoned me.
But Shreve, he was
a father to me.
And you, my sister.
- I felt safe with you guys.
- Mmm.
Do you have any idea
what that meant to me?
Just accepted me for me.
I thought we found family in each other.
But, you know, I've been
chasing that my whole life.
I'm just searching everywhere to
find that.
Stop trying to manipulate me.
There's that mask again.
- I don't have a mask.
- Yeah, you do.
I saw it the first time in New York
when I spent every last dollar
of mine trying to find you.
When you gave me your manuscript.
Rose's manuscript.
I saw you with your new friends.
You thought they were better
than me. Better than you.
With your cheap shoes and your
cheap accent. Your history.
You had inferiority
written all over you,
and you were embarrassed of me.
You caught me off guard.
You only remembered that you
loved me when your friends left.
I saw the real you that
day. The climber.
Changing colors, depending
on who you were with.
A different face for everybody.
But I still loved you.
You have no idea what it was
like for me in that world.
No idea.
And you're right.
We are alike.
We're survivors.
But unlike you, I survived without
tearing down everyone around me.
You use people, Micah.
Just like you used Martin Haywood.
Excuse me?
He called the Shelter main line
the morning after the murders.
What are you talking about? I was home.
You used Martin Haywood to
kill Josh to protect yourself.
You still think I had something
to do with this?
Oh, my God.
That you think I could hurt him.
You still suspect me.
I don't want to. But I do.
You were at my wedding.
You were at mine.
I'll give you all the answers you want.
And you can record it.
We can set it all straight.
Hey. I just heard back from Shae.
She sent over the phone
records from Shelter.
Why don't you take a look at your text?
A full confession would
make all our lives easier.
But, uh, yeah, I can work with this.
Hey, Markus, let me, uh
let me call you back.
All right, bet.
What the fuck are you looking at?
So, Micah. Who were you before we met?
Where did it all start?
My mother, Fawn. That was her name.
Where is she?
Dead. Five years ago.
She was alive all this time?
Uh, if you can call it that.
I hadn't seen her or heard
from her for over 15 years.
They found her body
out near Russian River.
Natural causes, after years
of abusing herself with drugs.
Just went to sleep in the
redwoods, under a tree.
They found, uh,
the author photo from
Discard tucked into her bra.
And she had written "my daughter" on it.
Police tracked me down
through my publisher.
I'm sorry.
And your father?
Could have been anyone.
Fawn used to love the Greek myths.
She read them to me. One of my only
fond memories of being with her.
And when I would ask about
my father, she would say,
"Goddesses didn't need
men to have daughters."
- Did you run away from her?
- I had to.
I knew I had to get away,
even as a little kid.
I mean, I tried it in spurts
to see if she noticed my
absences getting longer,
but she she didn't.
I was alone in an abandoned
building near the post office
in West Oakland.
And I hid in a crawl space to sleep.
The last time she came back,
she came back for me.
She had this guy with her.
And I ran before I could find
out what that meant for me.
It was not hard to guess.
Where'd you go?
I was at Bushrod Park.
I'd been sleeping there.
And I saw you and your
sisters with Shreve.
And this dog got off a leash, and
he made a beeline right for you,
and I was on the jungle gym.
Shreve saw the dog, and
he tossed the three of you
on that chain-link fence
and told you to keep
climbing to the top.
Yelling, like, "Keep climbing and
get to the top, out of reach."
I remember that.
I've never forgotten it.
I had just run from someone who
didn't know how to protect me,
and I saw that his instinct
wasn't for himself,
but for you three girls.
I wanted that.
Wanted to feel protected. Safe.
For a while, I did.
With Joshua.
So how's this gonna go?
You know, it's lucky I, uh
I just washed my hands.
Hey, T.
Hey.
Ooh! Wait. What are you doing here?
Oh, thought I'd surprise you.
Here. Let me take that.
My cousins, they just
got in from Atlanta.
Haven't seen them in a while.
Gonna show them around town.
- Want to come?
- Yeah, yeah. I'd love to.
My My parents won't be home
for a couple of hours. So
Cool.
- That them?
- Yeah, that's them.
Hi.
- So, now I get to meet your family.
- Yeah, you do.
- Hey.
- Hey, you got a sec?
- Uh, yeah. Micah just left.
- Where are you?
The Orpheum.
I just interviewed her.
Well, I got the phone logs from Shelter.
- And?
- Well, turns out
Martin Haywood called Ivy Abbott's phone
the morning after the murders.
- Are you serious?
- Yeah.
Check this out. I compared
Martin's phone records
with Ivy's, and it shows
Haywood and Ivy together
at a warehouse in Vallejo
the morning that Joshua
and Drew were killed.
If this is true,
- then it could clear Micah.
- Just hang on.
We still need the proof
that they actually planned
the murders together.
If Ivy stole the code
to Josh's lockbox, she could
have given him Josh's gun.
Yeah.
Look. Text me the address
to the warehouse.
I'll ask Noa
to see if she can find
some security footage.
Okay, cool. Have her
meet us at the theater.
I'm on my way to you.
- See you soon.
- Okay.
- Hey.
- Hey.
You're not gonna believe this.
Dead to rights. Martin Haywood.
On camera at the warehouse in
Vallejo. And look who's with him.
Damn, those motherfuckers.
She murdered my friend.
I need to be there when she's arrested.
Josh was my friend
and I loved him.
What are you talking about?
Ivy Abbott, you're under arrest
for the murders of Joshua
Keith and Drew Turney.
Hands behind your back, ma'am.
You have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can and will be
used against you in a court of law.
What's going on?
Ivy, what's happening?
What?
Micah.
What's happening?
So, we found footage of Ivy
meeting with Martin Haywood
the morning of your husband's murder.
Now, she's not saying a word.
She wants to speak to you first.
I don't want to hear
anything she has to say.
Micah, the cleanest way to a
conviction is a confession.
You can do this, Micah.
For Josh.
I just want to know why.
You left me no choice.
You see, Rose told Josh everything.
And Josh wasn't
comfortable living a lie.
Exposing the truth about you
would have destroyed you,
destroyed Shelter.
I wasn't gonna let that happen.
Haywood had his own
bone to pick with Joshua
over the fallout from their documentary.
So it wasn't hard to convince him.
Okay.
I had spent years architecting
Shelter's brand.
Pouring my own money
and everything that I had
into making it a success.
Josh arrived right on time.
Alone.
This was my chance to change the future.
To write myself into
the story of Shelter.
And I wanted it done the right way.
The plan was perfect.
The combination to the
lockbox, Josh's gun.
We had it all worked out.
But there was one thing
we didn't anticipate.
Hey.
Shit.
Oh, fuck.
You did all that to protect me?
To protect Shelter?
You're unbelievable.
You still can't see me.
I considered calling it off when
you decided to go to dinner
with Poppy.
Because I wanted you to be there.
We were going to kill Josh,
and then we were going to kill you.
It was just supposed to be
just you and me together.
God, when it was just the two of us,
there was really nothing we couldn't do.
Because I believed
I believed everything that you said.
I trusted you.
I gave everything to you.
Gave you my money.
Gave you my time. I gave you my life.
I bled for you.
I loved you.
I loved you more than I've
loved anyone in my whole life.
God, Josh could never understand that.
He could never.
Killing you would have saved you.
Would have turned you into a martyr.
You know what?
You don't deserve Shelter.
And you don't deserve all
the love that we gave to you.
You don't deserve the devotion and
the respect that we gave to you.
'Cause you're a con artist.
Your lies are what led us here.
And I hope you are left with nothing!
And I hope you're left with no one!
No one!
Nobody!
I am the cornerstone of my life.
I can rebuild, I can start fresh.
Brick by brick. Brick by brick.
From the chaos of my grief.
Brick by brick. Brick by brick.
Brick by brick. Brick by brick.
Micah?
Micah.
You tried to warn me.
That we'd find out more
than we'd want to know.
And now, with the recording,
I guess, so will the whole world.
Look
no child should ever have
to endure what you did.
I'm sorry for what happened to you.
But Rose was a discard, just like you.
If I let this go,
it means your pain was
more important than hers.
That can't be.
I know.
"When you find that patch of
pavement in the morning sun
and a shadow passes as someone
has to step around you "
" at least you know you still exist."
Those are the first lines of Discard.
Rose's lines.
I love you.
And I always will.
I didn't know how to
do it any other way.
I love you too.
When we think about things that
get passed down from generations,
we often think of physical traits.
You may have your mother's
eyes or your father's smile.
Maybe we think of family heirlooms.
Treasured items, collected
and passed down over time.
But we can also inherit their pain.
Their mistakes.
Their trauma.
And the pain of the past
often writes our future
before we've even realized how.
Like some silent inexorable punishment.
I've talked about the year
that has defined my whole life.
My lost year.
I've been alive three times
past that, and here it is.
Still, my choices,
the consequences for my choices.
The consequences of the murders
have had far-reaching ripples.
Shelter has been shuttered.
And the light of the truth has
been let into its dark corners.
Where Micah Keith will go from here,
only time will tell.
But I'd venture to guess that
the truth will set her free.
We are people of substance.
Of flesh and bone.
Fiber and liquids.
We are only invisible when
people refuse to see us.
And I'll add,
when we refuse to see ourselves.
Unfortunately, the world is
filled with invisible souls.
Rose Gil was invisible her entire life.
We now know that it was her words,
her experiences that inspired thousands.
Words that Micah claimed as her own.
Why did you take Rose's journals?
When Rose and Holt got caught,
I took the backpack to keep it
for her. To keep it with me.
And when I looked inside,
I found all her writings,
her drawings, her life.
I knew I knew it was
special. I could feel it.
And I knew it was my way out.
But it was a lie.
I never expected the
book to shake the world.
It grew beyond anything I ever imagined.
But the only way I could make
up for what I've done to Rose,
to reconcile the theft, was to do good.
And I did. I helped more
people than I hurt.
That's not enough, Micah.
It has to be.
But now the world knows Rose Gil's name.
She told me, in her own
words, what it meant.
Micah returned all my original journals.
It was like reuniting
with an old friend.
Seeing how I used to be,
how far I've come.
I can breathe again.
The truth is known.
And so am I.
I'll probably never see her again,
but we're always linked
by the story
and what we survived as kids.
Micah Keith, on the other hand,
was never seen for who she truly was.
Not by her devoted fans
or even her closest friend.
But the stories we tell about
ourselves carry consequences.
For those of us privileged
enough to have a platform,
why waste our voices on a myth?
I spent my life
crafting the image of Poppy Parnell.
I chose a name that
linked me to my mother
and differentiated me from
the family that raised me.
The Scovilles.
But my own myth
no longer serves me.
The further I ran,
the further I got from my own truth.
I let pain define me.
But now I'm going home.
I'm following my heart back to Oakland.
To a family who will
always ride with me.
And I am free to ride with them.
As Ellison wrote,
"When I discover who I am,
I'll be free."
Those words teach me
how to go home again.
How to see myself.
And how to be visible
to those who truly matter.
So, thank you for listening.
I am Poppy Scoville,
and I'd like you to reconsider.
