Underbelly s01e02 Episode Script

The Sorcerer's Apprentice

It's a jungle out there.
It's a jungle out there.
It's a jungle out there.
Just drop it, mate.
Know who I am? I'm the Prince, mate.
Drop it.
You want it? I'm the Prince.
I'm the People called Alphonse Gangitano the Black Prince of Lygon Street, and he loved the notoriety.
He loved being referred to in the media as a "Melbourne criminal identity", and "Melbourne crime boss".
But the night he and his best mate, Jason Moran, went berserk in a King Street bar and sent 13 innocent people to hospital, they crossed a line.
And we couldn't write it off as just another underworld dispute.
And Alphonse couldn't write it off as just another case of collateral damage, no matter how much he wanted to.
The reality shocked him and it was the beginning of the end of everything.
Broken jaw.
Half her dental work's missing.
Took 38 stitches to close up this bloke's face.
Actually, I think that was 48.
Guess what she does for a living, Alphonse.
Photographer.
And what'd you do to this bloke? Did you put him through a meat grinder? I'd like to call my lawyer.
I'd like to see a doctor of my choice.
You'll get access to your solicitor later.
A doctor, you don't need.
These people needed a doctor, Alphonse.
needed a doctor.
I'm making no comment.
We've got CCTV footage plus a bunch of witnesses.
Now, you do yourself a favour.
Make a full statement.
So, who was the other guy with you, Alphonse? The other bloke in the coat.
That could be Jason Moran.
He's a known associate of Gangitano.
And that's his walk.
You know how Jason Moran walks? You know, shoulders over and Well, wait till he's face on, alright? Should get it on the next camera.
Oh, Jesus! Human error.
Either way, it's bloody useless.
Now we've just got to rely on witnesses.
Do you feel like going and having a chat with Mr Moran? Yeah, but he'd just deny it, wouldn't he? So, why don't we get ourselves some proof first? Yeah? Virginia, hey! Hey, what are you doing? We're going to my sister's.
What are you doing? Hang on a sec.
Girls, come here.
Get in the car.
Get out of my way, Alphonse.
No, no, don't.
Don't.
Come here.
Leave 'em.
Leave 'em! Mummy and Daddy are gonna have a little talk, huh? You go back inside.
Yeah, Dad, whatever.
What, are you leaving without even a single word of explanation? I can't do this anymore.
Why not?! Because it hurts too much.
Come on, you're overreacting.
You're overreacting.
No, I'm doing what I should have done ages ago.
Get off me! You stink.
The coppers threw me in in a drunk tank.
Don't you see? Everybody wants to be the one that took down Alphonse Gangitano.
Who do you think you are - Public Enemy Number One? No.
I'm the man that loves you.
No.
What else is important? I knew you were different.
I knew you were different.
I knew you weren't a regular guy, but you're not real anymore.
You're living in some movie inside your head.
You're not You're not allowed to leave me.
You're not allowed to leave me.
Who are you? Carl Williams? Detectives Kraus and Owen, City West Detectives.
This vehicle was seen in King Street early this morning, around 2am, outside the Sports Bar.
Can you tell me what you were doing there, Carl? Am I under arrest? What for? It's a simple question, mate.
What's the answer? Picking up a mate.
Well, we know that was Jason Moran.
That's not the issue.
See, what we don't know is where you dropped him afterwards.
His joint, Moonee Ponds.
Why? Jason's joint? And so you took Jason and his mate Alphonse to the club earlier.
What time would that have been? I don't know.
1:50.
Right.
Only stayed there 5 to 10 minutes? That's a quick drink.
And how come you didn't go in? I was the designated driver.
Right.
Stone-cold sober, were ya? Yeah.
Well, you would have noticed that Jason was covered in blood when he hopped back into the car.
Oh, shit.
No, no, I didn't see nothing like that.
Must have been too dark.
Good thing she was due for a clean, eh? And did he mention where Alphonse had got to? Look, mate, I don't know nothin' about nothin'.
I'm just an honest citizen goin' about me business.
Mate, the only people who ever feel the need to say that are crooks.
Bald, hmm, nearly bald, and let me guess bald.
I mean, this vehicle really is a disgrace.
I really have no choice but to slap a canary on it.
Owen.
Is that what you said? You're a sphincter, Owen.
That's a technical name for arsehole.
Mmm, that was good.
Don't tell me that wasn't good.
You're good.
You're so good.
Hey, what happened to your hand? Ah, no, no, just nah, just muckin' up.
Guess what.
I got you a new job.
I don't like you flashing your boobs at punters all night, so I got you a nice job, got you a proper job in a florist shop.
You what? It's OK.
It's alright.
It belongs to a guy I know called the Munster.
Graham Kinniburgh.
He's an ugly bastard, but he's a good guy.
You'll like him.
Jason, who asked you to interfere? Come on, darl.
Look, I'm just I'm just lookin' out for you, OK? Oh, I suppose he's sort of like an uncle to me and Mark.
Uh, listen, um, if anyone asks, I was with you last night, OK? Come here.
Come here, come here, come here.
Idiot! Police! Get out of the car! Get out of the car now.
Open the door! Open the door! On the other side! Get out! Get out! Get down on the ground! Jason! Don't be a fool! Aargh! Get him up! Uh, well, we found nothing at the house.
What? Jason must have dumped all the clothes he was wearing.
There's no trace of it.
What, not even that flash duffle coat? Well, he's obviously pulled this kind of stunt before.
Where is he? Upstairs? No, he had to go to hospital.
He's not feeling very well.
Mistress Tracey.
I'm surprised you recognised me.
Yours is a face I would not forget.
So, uh, you were with Jason? How is he? He's got a head injury.
They won't let me see him yet.
Cops are in there.
I don't even know what this is about.
It's probably all my fault.
How can it be your fault? Jason, uh Jason got involved in a business dispute of mine.
And, uh well, things got out of hand.
If it's serious, I'll never be able to forgive myself.
If you just follow me this way, Mrs Moran.
We just have a little bit of paperwork to fill out just over at reception, if you don't mind.
That's Trish, Jason's wife.
Ah.
I wondered what she looked like.
I'll go.
Say hello to him for me.
Not "give him my love"? Hey, listen, it was, um it was nice seeing you again.
You know, I didn't like you at first, but you're a nice man.
OK, thank you.
Bless me, Father, for I have, um, sinned.
It's been a, uh Iong time since my last confession.
Yeah, it's been a while, actually.
It's been a long a long while, actually.
How long? Lester Ellis was a bantam weight.
What does that tell you? A lot more than you know.
Sorry, Father, false alarm.
Tony Mokbel? No kidding.
That's my name too.
I'm Carl Williams.
Mind if I sit down for a sec? What can I do for you, Carl? I just want to say how much I admire what you've done, Tony.
You want something or you're just generally arse-licking? As far as I can figure out, you supply about 50% of Melbourne's amphet market.
Yeah? Fair comment? Mate, if you're working for the cops, you're gonna be severely disappointed.
No, no, no.
I work for the Morans, as a driver.
Call 'em.
Check me out.
So, what do you want? You supply quality merchandise.
Everybody says so.
I want to learn how to cook and press A-grade E's.
I thought maybe you could teach me how to do it.
Why don't you ask Mark? Ask Jason? You're the only guy I respect.
What's in it for me, Carl? Well, when I set up my operation, you get a piece.
Oh, a franchise? Hey, we could set up a chain, huh? Mokbel's Party World.
Yeah, why not? How do I know you're not just a lazy, greedy wannabe, Carl? Try me.
I don't think so, Carl.
You're asking me to prove I'm not? I'm not asking you anything.
Piss off, Carl.
Why'd you dog on me, fat boy? Oh, g'day, Jase.
Good to see you up and about.
You told the jacks I was with Alphonse, huh? Why'd you do that? Oh, Jase, them cops, they lied to me.
This D, Owen, he told me he already knew you was there.
And you fell for it, huh? You stupid fat fuckin' moron.
Next time use your fuckin' brain.
Oh, Carl Your bonus.
Merry Christmas.
Ta, Jase.
You too.
Merry Christmas to you too, Alphonse! OK, come on, now, bog in! Trish has been up to her elbows in giblets all week.
You boys got enough turkey? Yes, Mum.
Thanks, Mum.
Now, Jase, should you be drinking? I remember when Mark's father used to have concussion, he could never drink.
Piss off, Mum! Guys, do you want any more? Do you want some? She's worried about ya.
You know who you've got to blame.
It's not Alphonse's fault.
He treats you like shit.
How long are you gonna swallow it? You're going back inside because of Alphonse Gangitano, no-one else.
Well, what can I say? He's like a brother to me.
He's a tumour on your brain.
Stop it! Stand back! Get out of the way! What are you doing? Guys! Mark! Leave his head alone.
Hit him in the guts.
He's crook! Merry fuckin' Christmas! Stop him! Stop it! Stop it! Cut it out! What did you think you were doing, you bloody idiots? They've got you on toast, even without the CCTV footage.
The case is only as good as their strongest witness, yeah? It only takes one.
So what are you saying? You want us to enter a plea? If you fight it and the court finds against you, which is a distinct possibility, given the circumstances of your arrest, the sentence, Alphonse, could be harsh.
Very.
On the other hand, plead guilty and we skip the trial.
No witnesses to tell their sob stories, no juries to get emotionally involved.
No.
No.
What, are you kidding? If I plead guilty, I'd get kicked out of the family.
Jase, Jase.
So, what do you think they'd give us? Against, what, two, three years? Or more.
And you'd be saving on barrister's fees This is fucked.
Fat boy, let's go! Jase.
Ho, Jase, come here.
Maybe he's right, you know? It makes sense.
How are we gonna get to all these witnesses? It only takes one of them to sink us.
Listen, listen, listen, you plead guilty, I go down too.
Did you think about that, huh? It may be for the best.
We do a year, paesan.
So what? What are you, a fuckin' lulu, huh? What the fuck is up your arse? Hey Hey, Jase.
Jase! Jase! Jase, Jase! Another skull fracture? Uh-huh.
You? Why? If he dies, it's my fault.
I'm not so sure.
I've got a feeling Jason's writing his own ticket.
Why do you say that? What, you love him? In a way.
Do you? Of course.
I just don't get it.
Why am I attracted to men like him? You believe in redemption, don't you? Catholics, I mean.
Yeah, we do.
Why? What are you - anything? Baptist.
Was.
I keep wondering if it's possible to change myself, my life.
How does it work? What, redemption? Confess your sins, you ask for forgiveness and you clean the slate.
That's it.
No matter what you've done? Provided you repent.
That's the catch.
Sounds too good to be true.
Fuck, I hope not.
I could do with a hug.
When I started, I couldn't stop.
And I started swinging that piece of wood around like it was you know, like it was a like it was a sword, and I was in a war.
Yeah, I don't know.
I just I wanted them to bleed.
I wanted to hurt them.
I wanted to leave a mark on them.
I wanted them to remember the night they met me.
I dunno.
Does that make me a does that make me a monster, Father, yeah? And whose fault is it, you know? Mine or God's? When the time came for their committal hearing, Jason was still unsure which way Alphonse would jump.
Would he plead guilty or not guilty? Why don't you let us sort it out? They put a dozen people in hospital, Graham.
Yes, I think it's the Empire's turn to strike back this time, Graham.
Don't say I didn't offer.
Nicola.
Good to see you.
All greased up and ready to go.
You realise it's not gonna be easy giving evidence? Look, you'll be fine.
The magistrate just needs to hear your story in your own words, OK? So how many other witnesses have shown up? Hello? Oh, yeah, no, it's OK.
Um Oh, well, look, I'll just have to check the timetable.
Hang on, I'll go to my office.
Shh! This had better be good, sunshine.
It's a gift, Tony.
It's for you.
A tribute.
Hello, gorgeous.
Come here.
Come on! A dog? Who said I wanted a dog? Not just any dog.
This is Jason's dog.
You pinched Jason Moran's dog for me? Mate, he loves this bloody animal more than he loves his bloody kids.
Is that right? So what's his name? Moet.
What if I don't like dogs, Carl? We'll put him down.
Just say the word.
That's your big plan to impress me? Plan B, actually.
That's only if you don't really like him.
I think you'd better come and tell me plan A.
Despite the best advice from his closest allies, Alphonse did plead guilty that day and he effectively severed the bond with the closest of them all - Jason Moran, his brother in arms.
So what happens now? Well, Alphonse goes straight to a sentencing hearing.
Jason's committal resumes Monday.
So I come back then? We are gonna have to slug it out after all, unfortunately.
I wouldn't mind slugging him.
Ugly little rodent.
Yeah, I know.
You have a good weekend.
Yeah.
Without CCTV footage, without physical evidence, the entire Crown case depended on witnesses.
And one by one, they were persuaded not to testify.
You have a nice day, Nicola.
I need my bloody head read.
What sort of a dimbo gets involved with two married gangsters? Hey, hey - one gangster, one ex-gangster.
You're serious? Yeah.
Yeah, I don't want to finish up in some shoot-out, you know? I want to see my daughters growing up.
What are you gonna do for a crust? Tommy! What are you doing home? Anna had to score a deal.
Anna's his sitter.
Ex-sitter.
Sweetheart, this is Al.
He's a friend of mine.
Let's go see what's in the cookie tin, hey? Fuck.
Fuck.
Hello? Hey, Mark.
What's up? Isn't this Tracey Seymour's place? Yeah.
Hi, Mark.
Oh, God, is it Jason? No, he's fine.
You wanna come in? No.
I just came to tell you that he's trying to get his life back together - Jason, we're talking about - and there's no room for you.
But it looks like you've already moved on, doesn't it? You gotta try the veal.
Hey? You're always recommending the veal.
That's because the veal is excellent.
Yeah, thanks, but I'm a little dyspeptic.
Oh, Jude reckons I should avoid cream-based sauces, so I'll have the Caprese salad and a beer.
"Your Worship, my heart is full of remorse.
" The guy's a bloody actor! Hey, Mario, what's the name of that play? 'Amleto'.
Hamlet! Prince of Denmark.
Yeah, Hamlet.
Oi.
What? Alphonse is slipping your girlfriend the length.
Tracey? Bullshit.
She can't get enough of me.
Well, she can't get enough of the Mediterranean either.
How long have I been warning you about this prick, hey? Once bitten, twice shy.
How many times you been bitten now, brother? Mark Moran called.
He says you're sleeping with a lingerie waitress.
True or false? Fuck off! "If you want your dog back in one piece, it will cost you $10,000.
"Wait by the phone for instructions.
Do not tell Jase.
" It was stuffed in the letterbox.
Neighbourhood kids, going by the crap spelling and punctuation.
They must be serious.
What do I do, Cliff? Carl.
Um, you gotta tell Jase.
Oh, no.
He'll hunt the little bastards down and rip their hearts out.
Well, um, maybe call the cops.
He'll rip MY heart out.
You want me to have a sniff around, maybe see if I can track 'em down? Would you? Oh, yeah, yeah.
Well, you gotta pay 'em something.
How much you got stashed around in the house? Oh, yeah, this'll do.
Yeah.
Um, alright, I'll give you a call.
$6,300 in change.
That's your plan A? I take the dog back, you buy yourself a few new suits.
I don't buy my suits, Carl.
Only one problem with that, Carl.
What's that, Tony? I think he likes me.
What if I don't wanna give him back? Ah-ha! What's he doing, eh? What's he doing? Holy shit! Hey? Hey? Come here.
There you go.
Hello, puppy.
Stir that through.
The fragrance is good.
What the fuck do you want? What's this, mate? Some Indian shit.
I don't know cauliflower something.
Hey, mate, uh, listen What? What? I'm sorry about Tracey, eh? It just happened.
Wasn't a planned thing.
It was just it was 100% pure accident.
Doesn't matter.
She's a bloody moll anyway.
Probably too good for both of us.
What the fuck's the matter with you, Alphonse? I went to church.
You what? I had a chat with the priest, you know? He helped me see what a fuck-up I've made of my life, you know? I can't afford to fuck up anymore.
It's nothing personal.
Get your hands off my dog.
Hey, I, uh I saw the girl.
It's over, OK? It's all over.
I think I prefer it when you lie.
Everything's gonna be good, OK? I'm gonna go pick up the girls from Gail's.
There's a casserole in the oven.
Is there enough for two? 'Cause Graham said he's coming over.
Yeah.
I'm glad you're here.
Everything's gonna be OK, I promise.
You did good cutting him loose.
I didn't.
He cut me.
Prick.
Everything this family's done for him.
Takes your girl and treats you like shit.
Want a freshie? Once bitten.
Al! Hey, you shouldn't have dressed! Graham.
Come in, mate.
You hungry? Yeah.
Thanks for the invite, mate.
What's on your mind? Where's Uncle Jase? He went out to drive his car.
Shit.
What do you think of me pleading, eh? Turning over a new leaf? You could have knocked me down with a feather.
I just don't want the girls growing up thinking their old man was some sort of cheap hood, you know? Don't worry.
We'll look after Ginny when you're in the boob.
I appreciate it, but that's not the way I plan on financing my future life.
Which is where you come in, Graham - Australia's greatest ever safe-breaker.
King of the legendary Magnetic Drill Gang.
Answer your phone, Jason! Turn it on! Shit! How long you been thinking about this? A couple of hours.
What do you think? What do you need me for? What if the old man doesn't wanna give up the combination to the safe? Hey, Jase.
What are you doin' here? Jason, put the bloody gun down! Jesus! So long, old mate.
God bless.
Nope.
What about this guy? What about him? Yes, that's him.
Definitely.
That's good.
And this bloke? No, I don't think so.
Are you sure? No, the guy I saw had tats.
Thanks.
I'm still waiting for some bastard to tell me what happened.
I wanna know WHY it happened.
He was a threat to every one of us.
It was bound to happen Somebody killed a friend of mine! I wanna know why.
I take this as a personal fuckin' insult.
Got it? He was a loose cannon.
We gave him repeated warnings.
You warned him, Mario, but he couldn't help himself.
He just had to prove what a big gangster he was.
I mean, that was what the guilty plea was all about.
None of this answers my question.
Who cares what happened? It's not gonna bring him back.
Munster, you got nothing to say? Well, he was my mate too, Mario.
He just had a death wish.
May he rest in peace.
Anyway, bottom line is the witnesses' evidence is fairly useless.
So, therefore, Jason's gonna get away with murder? Explain to me why you are going to Gangitano's funeral.
Because anyone who's anyone will be there.
It's an intelligence bonanza.
Well, enjoy yourself.
I'm gonna have a shower and go home.
Well, I thought you'd maybe stay.
Even permanently.
The reason being? Well, there's lots of reasons.
Who did it? Internal affairs, Tony.
Rumour has it Mark was on the premises.
You don't expect me to respond to rumours, do you? Condolences.
My heart is full of sorrow.
The Prince is dead.
Long live the Prince.
The Moran boys thought the world was theirs for the taking.
But they'd overlooked a home-grown threat with the potential to bring law and order in this town to its knees.
And Carl Williams had just learned that it was possible to get away with murder.
