Underbelly s01e13 Episode Script

Team Purana

It's a jungle out there.
It's a jungle out there.
It's a jungle out there.
Police! Don't move! Police! Get down! Tell your mate Carl Williams that we're shutting down all his cookhouses.
Tell that fat prick I'm not gonna stop until he's begging for change outside of Flinders Street Station.
You got that? Fuck that fucking Steve Owen.
You gotta do something about him, Carl.
And fuck you too, you little fucking faggot.
Get out! Talking about my fucking lifestyle here.
Message to you, Owen.
You better keep your door locked, 'cause I'm coming for you, prick.
I'm gonna chop you up.
Chop, chop, chop, chop, chop.
Gonna chop up your girlfriend too, while I'm at it.
If Steve Owen comes looking for me, there's a gun under the pillow.
If you don't talk to us, someone else will get in first.
I don't dog.
Never have, never will.
We know you've got information.
So why don't you stop wasting our time, and spit it out? If you help us get certain people off the streets, you'll be doing yourself a huge favour.
I wouldn't leave it too long, 'cause someone else will jump into the queue ahead of you.
I'll just take a moment to remind you of your priors.
Rape, assault with intent Message to you, Owen.
You'd better keep your door locked, 'cause I'm coming for you, prick.
I'm gonna chop you up.
Chop, chop, chop, chop, chop.
Gonna chop up your girlfriend too, while I'm at it.
Hey.
Hey.
What? Carl Williams has made death threats against me and you.
He knows about me? No, he didn't mention you by name.
Well, does he know where we live? No.
I don't think so I don't think he's serious.
Typical Carl bull You don't think he knows, but you're not sure? I don't think we have anything to worry about, realistically.
He kills people, Steve.
That's what you told me.
He grabs handfuls of cash out of his money sack and then gives it to murderers That's why I think it's best if you move home with your parents.
What? No.
I want to be with you.
Susan, this is not a bloody debate.
You go home, you pack your things, you leave tonight.
Until this thing is over.
What a fucking mess.
That's just vandalism, that is.
Phew.
How many kitchens have they closed down now, Carl? When we've done Condello, we do Owen.
Who's gonna put their hand up for that? Carl, Steve Owen is a jack.
I know he's a jack, Michael.
He's after me.
Been coming after me for nine years.
We kill Owen, we put evidence on him proving he's corrupt, Purana collapses.
When do we do Condello? As soon as I get the cash together.
May 2004, the Carlton Crew was all but wiped out.
Carl had murdered or ordered the murders of both Moran boys, as well as their dad, Lewis.
Elder statesman Graham Kinniburgh was dead, and the boss, Mick Gatto, he was in jail.
Which only left the money man, Mario Condello.
He was the last man standing between Carl and a complete victory.
And he was starting to feel distinctly nervous.
Don't be gentle.
"I'm gonna chop you up, Owen.
" I am worried about it, and so should you be.
Yeah.
Look, it's just hot air, boss.
Just means we're getting to him.
Means I'm getting to him.
It's grounds for taking him off the street.
You're aware of that? We're ahead of the game for once.
Let's not let it slip now.
Promise me you'll upgrade your domestic security arrangements.
No worries.
Listen, um, I was thinking, maybe it's a good idea to get someone inside the Condello camp.
G'day, Tibor.
Detectives Lowe and McManus, Brunswick detectives.
Mind if we take a look over the car? Well, as a matter of fact, I bloody do.
Got a warrant? Don't need one.
Under the Firearms Act, Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act, and the Control of Weapons Act, we're entitled to search, provided we've got reasonable suspicion you're carrying prohibited articles.
And we're very suspicious, let me tell you.
Step back, mate.
Oh, shit.
Bloody hell.
How would your family cope with that? What if I told you I could make it all go away? I could write what they call a 'letter of comfort' to the DPP asking him not to proceed with the charges.
Oh, I see.
This is gonna cost me money.
No.
I don't want money.
I want you to tell me something I don't know.
Mario's looking for someone to knock Carl Williams.
Give me a name.
He hasn't found anybody yet.
Tell me about this writing thing.
No, hang on.
You gotta give me something solid - a name, a how, a where.
What, so you can be there to stop it? Get yourself a nice, juicy arrest? Get your face on television? There are blokes out there trying to kill him, Tibor.
I'm trying to get him off the street, save his life.
I'm actually doing your job for you.
Alright.
What if I put my hand up for it, told him I'd do it? Would he believe you? He trusts me.
Well, you'd have to wear a wire, record the conversation.
A wire? Mario catches me with a fucking wire, I'm dead.
But I reckon it's better than 15 years.
Meanwhile, I had my own job to do.
I had to find someone with the guts to testify against Carl Williams.
You sure that's a good idea? Just don't tell Garry.
This is Senior Detective Carpenter.
What are their names? How have you been? Do you need anything? your puppies would be nice.
Keep that up and I'll bounce your head off the wall.
The best legal advice money can buy.
Isn't that what your friend promised you? I didn't see any QCs' names in the visitors' book.
Now, we know you were only the driver in the Michael Marshall murder.
The other guy was the shooter.
And we know you were paid for the hit.
All we want to know is who paid you.
Just two words, that's all we need, and your future's looking a whole heap brighter.
Dogs don't last five minutes.
We'll put you into witness security.
So tell me, honey.
Yeah? What's your cup size? Oh, you fucking grub.
C.
What's yours? What did he say? He refused to actually say the words 'Carl Williams', but there's no doubt.
It's gonna be tough getting the creep to testify.
I don't mind working on him.
Dave and I can handle it.
Yep.
OK.
Done.
Now, by law, Now, by law, you're required to turn the unit on and off yourself, like so.
This goes in your pocket, alright? And keep it on your person at all time.
But don't rush it.
Just wait for the right moment, OK? The right moment? Look, you've got two tasks - one, convince him you're the right man for the job, OK? And two he has to pay for it up-front.
Otherwise it's just talk.
You've got no right offering something you can't deliver.
Got him between a rock and a hard place.
Now we're in business.
You cannot usurp the DPP.
All you can do is ask him to consider how helpful a man has been.
I know what you're trying to do It's a means to an end, alright? The end never justifies the means, Steve.
The process has to be lawful and correct the whole time, otherwise you just jeopardise everyone else's hard work.
You shouldn't need to be reminded of that.
I'm trying to save a man's life, OK? For Christ's sake, boss, I just want to stop this fucking war.
Don't use that language to me.
There's a right way to do things and a wrong way.
Jesus was a man of peace, right? He was.
Why do you ask? You thinking of joining up? Unlike me, I mean.
I'm a man of war, Mario, a man of violence.
Been thinking about your problem - Carl Williams.
You want someone to off the fat boy, I'm ready to step up.
You? Who can you trust? You ever killed a man before? Gotta start somewhere.
It'd be an honour to do him for you.
OK.
Forget it, Mario.
I've done my research.
I know what the market rate is.
it is.
This is crap.
Can't hear a thing.
He agreed on a fee.
He gave me the green light.
Nah, doesn't matter.
You've got to get him to hand over serious cash.
Listen, these Carlton boys, they never pay up.
And if they do, they're never on time.
If he wants Williams dead, he'll pay.
Now, you think about it, Tibor.
Mmm.
Hah.
Having fun? Take five, Bunny.
How could you not believe in a good and benevolent God? Unbelievable.
Listen, I've been thinking.
Hmm? I'll need a disguise.
What? When I do the hit, I'll need a disguise.
What are you, an international man of mystery now, huh? I've got nothing to hide under, Mario.
And I want to leave the country straightaway.
I'll need a passport.
Go to the post office.
Get an application form.
In another name.
Costs money - 20-odd grand.
I'll add it to the balance when you deliver.
I'd really like it now, Mario.
I'm a little short this week.
You get the document.
I'll pay you back.
You mean to tell me you haven't got 20 grand in the case? So you don't think I'm good for this? That's not what I said.
Nah, hang on.
Wait.
You don't think that I'm good for this? Huh? Fuck you.
I want six months living expenses, plus a university degree in some kind of computer engineering and a matching resume with bona fide referees.
Honours degrees, international prizes Reality check, mate.
You're between a rock and a hard place.
You're not getting out of jail.
DPP's not throwing away a murder charge.
The best thing you can hope for is a reduction in your sentence.
How much? Depends how good your info is and how charitable the judge is feeling on the day, but you're looking at Maybe I don't know anything.
Exactly.
Anyone can write 'CW' on a table, can't they? Does not mean a thing.
If you don't help yourself, you'll never breathe free air again.
Why carry the can on your own? It wasn't your idea to kill anyone, was it? You could chop years off your sentence.
I like it in here just fine.
Bullshit you do.
Three square meals a day, plenty of exercise, telly, no bills to pay - it's fucking paradise.
If you change your mind You know, I'd have thought your mum might like to see you free again one day.
I'm a man of war, Mario, a man of violence.
I want to leave the country straight afterwards.
Costs money - 20-odd grand.
You mean to tell me you haven't got 20 grand in the suitcase? You want someone to off the fat boy.
Who can you trust? Who can you trust? Who can you trust? Who can you trust? Who can you trust? # Ah, yeah # Well, come on # Well, every time that I see you # It leaves me feeling, oh, so blue # Knowing that you used to be all mine # Still got my friends and I got some time # Driving round your neighbourhood # I'll burn it up # You know I should # Burn it up Burn it up # Hey.
Michael.
What's the big emergency? Condello, mate.
It's on.
Whoo-hoo! Hah-hah-hah! Yeah.
What's the plan? Condello, he walks his dog every morning through the cemetery.
Now when that little pooch stops for a popper - bang! Simple.
Good doggy.
Bang! Let's go.
I thought Mario Condello had moved into an apartment in the CBD.
He has.
He goes home at the weekends to visit the family.
If we let Michael Thorneycroft and this other bloke What's his name? Sean Sonnet.
If we let them run, we might get fat boy on conspiracy to murder.
The only way we'll get that to stick is to catch them in the act.
I realise that, Garry.
You have to prove intent.
Garry, I was in school that day too.
We're gonna need We need LDs, Tls, trackers in the cars Got it.
But just don't lose them.
Don't drop the ball now.
What's the matter? Where's my gun? What do you mean? The gun that I keep in here to protect myself, Tibor.
What are you doing? No, the question is what are you doing? Or more to the point, who are you doing it for? You working for Williams, huh? You taking money from Carl? Why would I take money off somebody who was To off me - what else? I know how your mind works.
You take money from Carl to knock me, then get a deposit out of me to knock him.
You think I'd doublecross you? It's beautiful if it works, isn't it, just beautiful.
With all the crap I go through for you, you insult my integrity? You fucking Italian ingrate! You tell me Put it away! Tell me you're not working for Williams.
I want to hear it! I want to hear it.
I am not working for the fat boy.
Now just calm down, Mario, and listen to me.
My job is to protect your life.
And you have my word on that.
Oh, what? I can't do it.
Yes, you bloody can.
Are you scared or something? Yeah.
But you wouldn't get it.
Try me.
Forcing me to dog on the bloke.
He's a mate.
Tibor, I'm not gonna force you to do anything, alright? I can't.
What I am asking you to do is to help us.
And why should I? Because we should stop this thing before someone else gets killed.
It's the right thing to do.
You think he might go feral, knock Williams, take the money and scram? I wanna know what he's doing every minute.
I don't trust him.
Exactly.
Now, this is a monster you created.
Oh, for Christ's sake.
Get real.
Don't talk to me like S'cuse me, skipper.
Time for the happy snaps.
Now?! Right, if we have to do it, let's do it right.
Jackets and ties.
Let's look like professionals even if we don't always act like one.
Come on, bit of a smile, eh? There we go, good.
Say cheese, Purana! Cheese, Purana! Nice one.
Even bigger.
Come on, bit of ham with that cheese.
One, two, three.
Hey! Lovely.
Garry? You OK? I was, um Yeah, but I'm only asking for 30 grand.
It's a fucking emergency, Carl.
Can't afford it this month.
You've got a shitload here.
I already told you I can't afford it this month.
The fucking jewellery won't be on special forever.
Nah.
Hi, mate.
Hey, um what's in the bag? Huh.
We're on.
Once the job's done, you get 200 more.
Mate, I'm not gonna use you in the actual hit.
Eh? Why not? I can't rely on you.
If you're not stoned, you're asleep.
If you're not asleep, you're stoned.
Sometimes he's asleep AND stoned.
Fuck off! I want you to source the gun car.
So I'm the vehicle guy? Cool.
Michael Thorneycroft just stole a Ford Telstar.
Garry? Game on, mate.
I'm afraid Mr Butterworth's not available at the moment.
Can I take a message? Yep, OK.
No, I'll get him to call you as soon as possible.
I want the surveillance team in on that car.
I want to know where it is at all times, who's in it, what they say, and I don't want any mistakes.
Have we established where Mario's staying tonight - home or away? The city apartment.
I don't reckon they'll strike till dawn anyway.
Garry, tucker's up! Maybe he doesn't like Thai food? He's not a bloody retard, Todd.
Oi.
Oi.
Here you go.
Boss, chow's up.
Boss? JESUS! C'mon, get in here! Get a bloody ambulance! Just been having a blub in the ladies'.
You know, when they do the final body count they're not gonna include him.
They should.
This job killed him.
Unless it was the shortbread.
I was gonna have a talk to him later on too, just to, you know just clear the air.
What about? Yeah, I might just head home for an hour.
See the kids.
Yeah.
Course.
OK.
Hello? It's me.
Hey.
I haven't heard from you in a while.
Yeah, sorry.
I've just, um Well, it's just been kinda crazy at work.
Is everything OK? I just needed to hear your voice.
Babe.
Just remember, Gregg, do everything like I said and we'll be cool.
Relax, Seany.
I'm cool.
I'm 50 grand cool.
Seany? Seany.
Please, mate.
Jesus Christ.
Mobile 1 to Mobile 2.
Come in.
Gregg here.
Mobile 1 to Mobile 2, what the fuck's going on? Oi.
Didn't you hear me? You're Mobile 2, dickhead.
Flat battery.
You got jumper leads? What idiot boosts a unit with a flat battery? Michael Thorneycroft.
Gregg, have you got jumper leads? No, I don't, Seany.
Fuck! What's happened? Someone's jump-started the Telstar.
Sounds like Sean Sonnet and a new guy - Gregg someone.
Right.
This is the Telstar.
This is Mario's place in Brighton.
This is his apartment in the city.
Somewhere between here and these two locations, we're gonna have to stop them with guns in their hands.
They might have changed their plans.
We gotta cover ALL bases.
Crazy Eyes wants another chat.
Do it, yep.
Take Dave.
Go.
There.
They're going south, to Brighton.
I'm going out there.
Jeremy, get your crew, mate.
We're going.
Let's go.
Where to? Home.
Brighton.
Dog's booked in for vaccinations this morning.
Listen, my advice would be to stay put for a couple of days.
Just cancel the vet.
Mario Listen, I Call it a premonition, OK? But I had a really bad dream about you last night.
Just just stay put for a couple of days.
You're with Derryn Hinch.
We've all heard about the spate of gangland murders in recent years.
We've seen the gangsters' funerals on television - those offensive, ostentatious festivals of muscle, phoney emotions and bad taste.
Well, yesterday we lost one of the good guys.
Detective Inspector Garry Butterworth of the Purana Taskforce died suddenly last night.
Typically, he was at his desk when he died, doing the job that he'd dedicated his life to.
Garry Butterworth joined the police force as a cadet in 1978.
He worked the tough streets of Brunswick and St Kilda as a uniformed copper.
His skills as an investigator were soon recognised and Garry rose through the ranks of Homicide where his professionalism and his tenacity, thoroughness and absolute integrity became watchwords.
He'll be sadly missed.
They've stopped outside Brighton Cemetery.
Steve, can you confirm that Condello is in town? Yeah, boss.
Give me a sec, I'll call him.
Tibor, you need to tell us what's going on, mate.
Call me back.
Right, we're in position.
We're in position now.
Who paid you for the hit? I can't talk while Carl's still out and about.
I open my mouth, he'll come after me.
There are guys in here who'll stab you for a packet of Twisties.
You lock him up first, then I'll talk.
How can we lock him up without your evidence? I was the driver for the Marshall job.
And I did the Jason job.
Drove the shooter to the car park, dropped him off where we saw Jason and Pat getting back in the van.
Picked him up after on the other side of the creek.
Oh, incidentally, Pat Barbaro was Jason's fault.
That prick shouldn't have ducked.
Who paid you for the hit? Come on, just give us a name and we'll look after you.
Nice decoy, eh? Sweet.
Couple of lilies.
Him? Him, that bloke over there, the woggy looking bloke? Nah, that's not him.
Gee, there's a lot of people around.
Fuckin' too many people around.
Not gonna be able to do this.
We're gonna have to hang about, get up close to him.
Is that him? Well, you're looking for a bloke with a dog, right? Well, bloke, dog - snap.
Let's go.
Come on, mate.
For a passport, yeah, 20.
Two passports - one for you, one for me.
For you? Once the job's done, I leave the country too.
We meet up overseas and I pay you the full amount personally.
Now, you prove to me you're a man of violence.
Steve, shut these clowns down before they shoot somebody.
Not yet, boss.
Steve, don't muck about.
Shut the bastards down.
Sorry, missed that, boss.
You're breaking up.
Jesus, they've got the wrong guy.
Steve, they've got the wrong guy! Mr Khan! G'day, Mr Khan! What a coincidence seeing you here, Mr Khan.
Mr Imran Khan! Sorry, you've mistaken me for someone else.
You've mistaken me for someone My name is Mr Abbas.
I know, mate.
I know.
Steve, how much intent do you need? Well, have they mentioned Carl by name yet? Well, no, we're still up shit creek, aren't we? Forget it, Steve.
Shut the bastards down! Shit! Hey, Seany, you nearly popped the wrong bloke, mate.
You're in this too, mate.
Don't you forget it.
Not as much as you, mate.
Get down! On the ground.
Face down.
On the ground.
Who's paying you? WHO'S PAYING YOU?! Who's behind it? It was a kill, wasn't it? Tell me who paid you! Say his name! Say his name, you bastard! Say his bloody name! Argh! All we wanna know is who paid you.
Carl Williams gave us I got 25 for Mark.
Mark? Mark Moran, C-cup.
Who do you fuckin' think? I drove.
Carl was the shooter.
After he did it, I raced him across town to a pub so he could get his fat face on closed-circuit TV.
But no way am I getting in a witness box till Carl's locked up nice and tight.
You got that? I thought you'd done a runner on me.
I did.
Good quality this time.
$40,000 for two forged passports for him and me.
So why'd you come back? It was the right thing to do.
Hey, thanks for coming in.
Can you deliver a letter for me? I don't want it going through the prison office.
Director of Public Prosecutions.
Do you wanna do a deal? You prepared to testify against Carl? He promised me the best lawyers in town, didn't he? You reckon I've seen one of the bastards? I'm gonna do a deal before someone else beats me to it.
You gotta promise me one thing though.
Promise me you'll take care of me mum.
Keep her safe.
Sure.
Onya, Jacqui.
Thanks.
Garry should be doing this.
Detective Sergeant Owen go get the fat boy.
# Say goodbye # Coat buttoned up.
Purana tie knotted sharply, boss.
# And we'll steal # A lover's song # How it breaks # My heart to leave you # Now the carnival has gone # Oh, my love, the dawn is # Hey, Carl.
Yeah? # And my tears # Are falling rain # For the carnival is over # We may never meet again # Like a drum # My heart was beating # And your kiss # Was sweet as wine # But the joys # Of love are fleeting # Carl Williams, I'm arresting you for murder.
# For Pierrot and Columbine # That's how the gangland war ended, on a cold day in June 2004, when Steve Owen finally shut down Carl Williams.
# This will be # Our last goodbye # Though the carnival # Carl Williams was convicted of Michael Marshall's murder in 2006.
In February 2007, he pleaded guilty to murdering Jason Moran, Lewis Moran, another drug dealer called Mark Mallia and conspiring to murder Mario Condello.
He's currently serving a minimum of 35 years.
In March 2007, he and Roberta were divorced.
A week into Mario Condello's trial for conspiring to murder Carl, he was shot dead by persons unknown.
His file is still open.
Tony Mokbel fled Australia in the middle of his trial for cocaine trafficking.
In his absence, he was sentenced to nine years.
Early in 2007, Danielle McGuire gave birth to his daughter, Renata.
Today Mick Gatto is a director of a construction crane company.
He also runs a mediation and arbitration business.
And as for us, the work at the Purana Taskforce goes on.
