Unsafe Sex in the City (2012) s02e06 Episode Script

Series 2, Episode 6

More young people than ever are catching sexually-transmitted infections And Britain's STI clinics are the first stop for anyone who thinks that a night of passion might mean they've caught something nasty.
This programme contains strong language.
This series goes behind the doors of two clinics .
.
Bit cold, as you know, OK? .
.
in two very different cities We're a bit mental, but we're not judgmental.
Watch it! God gave you a minge Use it Why are we not looking after little Ollie? What's he done to upset you? And Exeter, in the heart of the Devon countryside.
This is Exeter, mate.
Everyone sleeps with everyone! Condoms for sex? No.
Getting a sexually-transmitted infection from a farm animal.
We help bring patients to get checked out I've trusted people that I shouldn't have.
Oh, my God.
I'm just hoping and praying that I haven't got anything.
.
.
before following them home.
.
12 months? 20 partners? That's well shocked me.
.
.
to find out how getting tested Your results from your recent visit are .
.
affects their health You were positive to chlamydia .
.
their relationships Why would you need to carry on coming in to take the test if you're not sleeping with anyone but me? .
.
and their sex lives.
She wanted it so bad.
This week, in Exeter Annie? Single mum Annie is worried what a one-off fling might have led to.
Did you use any condoms, at all No.
It would, literally, ruin everything.
While in Leeds, David finds out his internet lover is infected.
Syphilis can cause damage to the brain, nerves, eyes, liver, bones and joints.
And condom-shy Tony Is that the text? That's the text.
.
.
fears the worst.
I'm shitting myself now.
Good Yorkshire weather, eh? Wonder what's in store for us today.
Most important part o' day, me snap box! In Leeds, before the clinic doors open to the public, everyone is getting ready for battle.
Got to put me face on first, before I go down.
Need a face-lift, I know that.
Morning, ladies.
ALL: Morning.
Everything OK? NURSE: Yeah, you? Yeah, good.
Anything particularly this week Can we have some? You certainly can.
You out again? Yeah, again.
That's not a problem.
Every Monday morning, pharmacy technician Roy makes sure the clinic is well stocked for the week ahead.
Were you busy at the weekend, then, Jane? Well, I were working on Saturday.
And then, Sunday, we all went out for a meal for me and my mum's birthday, all the family.
Yeah? Very good.
Yes, went to the Toby Carvery in Horsforth.
Was it good.
It was, yeah.
I've never been there.
It were lovely.
You get proper mashed potatoes as well.
Proper mashed potatoes Funny about me mash.
It's not that bad But it does sting a bit.
Braving the rain this morning is 23-year-old Tony.
He's come for his first-ever sexual health test and has brought Hayden for backup.
I doubt you've got AIDS.
I doubt I've got anything.
It's I mean, as soon as I booked the appointment I was shitting myself.
Never really bothered using protection, so There is a chance, you know.
Can't be sticking it in wet places and not know where it's going.
Dangerous.
Got to get my dick checked.
It's like a quiz.
Know what I mean? They just put a little thing down there and it's like Just literally goes - that's it They don't like dig it in and like Does it feel weird now? Yeah.
And it's a woman doing it as well, so, like, they're just, like, gentle with that shit.
Couldn't care less, a woman or a man.
Tony will be in the capable hands of Dr Sonya, who's no stranger to a penile swab.
So we normally use these ones here.
These blue ones, so they look a bit more vicious than perhaps they are, just because I think the round end scares some people.
Erm, then if it's more difficult we can use the smaller ones, as well.
Erm, and I think there's, like a few other size options, but the blue ones are the main ones we use.
'Do you feel sorry for the men that have to have that?' Do I feel sorry for them? Erm, no, cos women have to have plenty of, er, of, erm, swabs and they have to have a speculum which, you know, is probably quite uncomfortable, too.
Anthony? How are you? I'm good.
You all right? Would you like to come through Yourself? I'm all right, thank you.
But there's something that worries Tony even more than a penile swab.
OK.
Is this your first time here today then? Yeah.
It is? OK.
Are you feeling OK? No, I'm nervous, yeah.
You're a bit nervous? You've no need to be embarrassed, we're certainly not.
OK? Yeah.
I need you to do a urine sample for chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
And I can do a blood test for HIV and syphilis, as well.
I don't think I'll be requiring the, the blood tests.
I'm kind of scared of needles.
I don't think I've got syphilis or HIV, so OK, I can't force you and I'm not going to force you to have one Is it just taken from there? Yeah.
It's just taken from your arm, it's just one bottle.
I'm getting pains all over me now, just thinking about it.
Got nothing to worry about, OK OK, and if it becomes too much for you, just let me know.
OK? Just lie back, just relax.
I'm not bringing a needle anywhere near you yet, OK, so I'm just Shall we go for it? Yeah.
Yeah? OK.
It's, literally, going to be about ten seconds, I promise.
Ten seconds.
We can count together if that'll help.
No, don't look at the needle Anthony, don't look at the needle.
Oh, I don't know if I can do it Do you want me to use a smaller needle? Yeah.
OK.
Oh, why did I say "yeah"? I fucking hate needles.
Right, don't look, this is absolutely tiny, OK? You ready Oh, no, not at all.
Right, I'm not going to make you do anything, I'm just going to hold this arm and I'm ready when you are.
Right, go on, then.
You sure? No.
Yeah.
You sure? I don't think you're at a particularly high risk, but it's just because you've had unprotected incidents, that's all.
Yeah, I think I'll pass.
You want to pass? OK.
Tony's failed to give blood, so he'll not be tested for the life-changing infections - HIV and syphilis.
But he will find out if he has gonorrhoea or chlamydia - or both - in two weeks.
My body just don't want blood to be taken out of it, you know Here's hoping it's a good one, like, cos if it's not, I'll be gutted I think he was quite nervous which is understandable, erm, and I think he's quite nervous about what tests we're going to do and everything.
I've had a patient pass out here before.
Tony is not the first anxious patient who is scared of a prick in his arm.
Needle phobia seems massive to me, that's the most common thing that gets mentioned to me, "I am frightened about having my bloods done.
" Relax your hand.
Aargh, aargh.
It's always the big guys.
The young girls are fine, you know, they're like, "Yeah, go for it.
But the big You know, the big guys are like proper wimps.
Oh, I wish I'd rang me mum to come and hold me hand.
Down south, the Exeter clinic is feeling the rush of a manic Monday.
Not my favourite day, er, I'll be honest.
Only becausethey do tend to be quite busy, for the obvious reason that the weekends have preceded it.
But it's good, cos it goes quick, and I think my dislike is just that it's Monday, so.
.
"dislike" is pretty strong, I do like it.
Yeah, so, going pretty well Oh, dear, had a very stressful afternoon It feels suddenly busy.
It is busy.
The students are coming back.
It's busier.
It's hotting up.
As the students swarm in after the summer Got loads of syphilis today.
.
.
nurse advisor Luke knows what's in store for the term ahead.
I think 15-25 bracket, which is considered the most at risk for things like chlamydia or has the highest rate of chlamydia definitely.
We do see that group, particularly, weekend drinking, binge drinking, unsafe sex.
And it seems to be a pattern.
And a pattern that really, no matter how you approach it, is one I think that's going to continue, really.
Unprotected sex can lead to two things - an STI or a baby, as Luke's next patient knows all too well.
Say, "Thank you.
" 20-year-old student, Annie, is a single mum.
Are you escaping? And she's joined at the clinic today by her 20-month-old son, Jonah Annie has come in after a recent night of passion left her worried.
I didn't know his history and there was no protection, sort of, like STI-wise.
I don't think either of us were really expecting it to happen and it was just sort of caught-in-the-moment type thing.
Yeah.
I wasn't impressed with myself CHILD CRIES Annie? Annie? Annie? Oh, sorry, I didn't realise it was you, sorry.
I don't think he's going to let go.
Is he not going to let go? Do you not need your pram? I'll wheel it through, only because it's the main waiting room, so Thank you.
Feels a little bit surreal.
We're all the way round the other side.
You grab a seat on there for me How can I help you today? I just wanted to just be tested pretty much everything, really Right, and when did you last have any sexual contact, then? Two months ago.
Two months ago And is this a regular partner, is this someone you know, is it a one-off? Erm Yeah, I guess it was a one-off And did you use any condoms, at all? No.
OK.
So have you got anything unusual going on at the moment Any unusual discharge or, or any pain, pelvic pain, at all? Any unusual bleeding? No.
Nothing like that? No.
OK.
Are you still have bleeds with your coil or have they stopped? No.
They've stopped.
OK.
I haven't had it checked, though.
I was supposed to go and check that it was all OK, but I never did.
Oh, right.
OK.
What the worry is if you put a coil in and then it's not in the right place or it's fell out or come out, you are at risk of pregnancy and that defeats the whole point of putting it in.
Yeah.
We can examine you today, just to check that it is Erm, yeah, might as well.
OK.
So, take off what you need, bottom half.
Just leave them on the chair where the fan is and, like I said, onto the bed cover yourself with that bit of paper and then let us know when you're ready.
All right? OK.
So, yeah, erm, LVS and just examination just to see the threads.
Are you ready? Erm Oh, it's OK, no, I was OK, take your time.
I'm not sure what I'm meant to do OK, what? Yeah, pop the soles of your feet there and there, so the soles of your feet just prop it up.
Soles of your feet.
That's it.
Yeah.
OK.
And then if you bring your bottom right down towards me, but lay back at the same time.
Remember when you were giving birth? Yeah.
That position.
Right.
OK.
So, now, what I want you to do for me is just let your legs flop to the side, so let your legs just flop to the side.
OK.
So you'll feel a bit of pressure, again it shouldn't hurt, but if it does, tell me and I'll stop.
I'm going to do a swab first of all, OK, that's what it looks like.
It's just going to go in to the vagina, so it'll feel a bit strange.
Let your legs flop again for me That's great.
Let them really flop.
That's it.
Yeah, you'll feel a bit of a stretch OK, so the coil is definitely still there.
I can see that, that's fine.
That all looks OK.
OK.
Right, so let's just take it out.
So the coil's definitely still there and it will definitely still be working.
You all right? Yeah.
Glad it's over? Sorry.
It's not the biggest room in the world is it, to be honest? Just wash my hands.
The other thing I was going to mention to you, with regards to your coil, is about checking it yourself.
OK.
Erm, and you said nobody mentioned that to you, initially, when it was fitted? No, they just said sometimes, if you have sex, like the partner might be able to feel it, that's all they've.
.
All they said.
OK.
I'm going to have to demonstrate, cos it's easier, but basically, when you're in the shower, if you - one foot up, OK, whichever way you find easiest, but what you're trying to do, the aim of this is to reach in to see if you can feel the threads.
OK.
Every now and again, just have a feel, to see if you can, because if the coil was to come out, you'd be at risk of pregnancy.
OK.
Yeah.
Anyway, on to taking some blood The coil has protected Annie from pregnancy, but it can't protect her against catching gonorrhoea chlamydia, HIV or syphilis.
I feel silly, cos I do think that he has been quite sexually active before, he's quite open about that.
But, yes, it did kind of worry me, more than other people I've been with, definitely.
Cool, all right, OK, so we're all done.
You're free to go.
And we'll be in touch in seven to ten days.
Brilliant, thank you very much All right.
No worries.
Open the door for you.
Where's Thomas? Must be outside Annie will now have to wait for her results, to find out if her STI worries become a reality.
Filling out the white sheet, front and back.
Never been in this part of the hospital.
Looks grey.
300 miles away, best mates Joel and Eve have come to face the swabs together.
So if you just circle the yes and no on there.
OK.
Both take a seat, we need to make some notes up for you.
At 18 they've not only just come out of their first serious relationships, but it's also their first time at the clinic We'll both get fondled.
I'm not bothered about that.
Yeah.
Imagine if you saw someone running down the corridor and crying, like, "No, my life's over, I've got AIDS.
" That's not funny.
Is that in? Oh, right.
Staff nurse Tim and sister Karina are no strangers to first-time nerves.
I just try to get them initially relaxed in the position, cos if you're in a position, with your legs over stirrups, and then you're having a metal speculum coming towards you, you're not going to feel relaxed.
Just immediately, you describing it like that, but it makes me feel slightlyuneasy.
It almost sounds verymedical, doesn't it? Almost as if you've just entered into a torture chamber.
Apparently, like, with girls, you have to check both holes.
So, they might check yours.
Oh, God.
What, both holes? Yeah I think they stick summat down down the Yeah, I know that area.
No, but they, apparently, they check like Same with me, as well.
No, apparently they check the other area, as well.
Anybody who's come in should always have a hearty breakfast and drink plenty, but I usually find it's the opposite, because they're nervous and their appetite is So what's a hearty breakfast - a full English? Yeah, full English.
Black pudding.
Joel? Do you want to come this way? My preference at the moment is men.
It changes really, because it just depends how I feel.
But I could see myself settling down with a woman and having kids.
So what we do first of all is we just ask you a few general questions Some of the questions are quite personal.
Not just cos we're being nosy, it helps us with just, erm, any potential diagnosis, if there's any problems.
So when was the last time you had sex with anybody? Abouttwo months ago.
And when you had sex, was it protected using a condom Yeah, I think so.
OK.
Not sure Um, yeah, I think so.
You think so.
But I was drunk so .
.
OK.
Did you have anal sex with him? Yes.
Was it giving and receiving? No Justgiving.
Just giving.
OK Apart from him, when was the last time you had sex with somebody different? Never.
OK.
So that was the first time? OK.
So if I just show you around here.
Me and Joel have been best friends since year seven.
We actually went out in year seven for a day and because I wouldn't kiss him he dumped me.
I can't get these trousers off THEY LAUGH Struggling.
And lay on the bed Yes, please.
Front ways or back On your back, please.
Right.
OK.
"Do you have an anal sex or toy in your bum?" No! Oh! "How often do you use condoms? Sometimes.
Are you all right there? Yeah, I'm struggling.
Right, yeah, I'm fine.
On your back, Joel.
Oh, on my back? Yeah.
Right.
Sorry.
It's all right.
You've not been before, I'll forgive you.
No.
Oh.
This toilet-towel thing keeps.
.
Let me help you.
Hold on.
Come and take a seat.
It's quite warm in this room, so just be warned.
It's a good thing to do, to come and have a check-up, yeah.
Exactly.
As far as you're aware you've got no symptoms, so no change in discharge and no ulcers, sores, rashes, warts or lumps? And if you don't have symptoms you can do the swab yourself, I'll just talk you through it.
Yeah.
Unless you want me to examine you.
Oh, the swab will be fine So when did you last have any kind of sex? You put a month ago.
Sure it's a month.
You've had one sexual partner in the last three months, is that your boyfriend Yeah, well, my ex-boyfriend.
Your boyfriend.
So if you're happy, you basically do a swab called a vulval, bit of a mouthful, vulval vaginal swab.
And it tests for gonorrhoea and chlamydia, And then we offer a blood test for HIV and syphilis, Right, so I'm just going to start with a really quick examination Well, I need a wee, so OK, I can feel your bladder.
Yeah, just examining your testicular area.
Everything looks absolutely fine, so, Joel if you could turn over knees towards your chest and I'm going to do the swab from your back passage, if that's OK.
I just went to a festival and.
.
I don't know, it's a bit like, I've heard that you can catch diseases from the toilets No.
No such thing.
Load of rubbish.
The only way you're going to catch any sexual infection is through sex.
So that's sex, oral sex.
There might be a chance through sex toys, but definitely not from toilet seats, sharing towels, sharing cutlery, sharing cups, anything like that.
Oh, right.
That's fine, then.
No.
That was pretty disgusting.
OK Joel, you can get dressed now, I just need to do the one from the back of your throat.
There we go.
Say, "Aah", for me.
Aah.
You don't have to get undressed or anything.
This is the swab, you hold it at that line there and you just like I said, do that.
And then when you've finished, pass it to me and I put it in this tub.
OK.
Thank you.
All right? Yeah, that's fine.
Was that as horrendous as you thought it was going to be? Um, yeah and no.
Yeah.
It weren't that bad.
Good, I'm glad.
I just thought you was going to put summat in the front way instead of the back way.
We used to do that.
If you were symptomatic, I would ve taken a swab from the front, but the urine sample is enough As you've no symptoms, you're saved from that today.
Would you like any condoms? Yeah(!) Help yourself to as many as you want.
Right.
Joel and Eve will have to wait to find out if their first sexual experiences have left them with any STIs.
We get all kinds of patients.
We get some people who you might class as, sort of, very promiscuous that don't have any infection.
and they end up with warts, you know, or chlamydia.
I think mine will go well.
I hope mine will go well after all that.
If I found out I had something I'd be gutted.
Yeah, confident.
The main thing is getting rid of this stigma attached to coming and having a check-up in the first place.
And, hopefully, by doing things like urine samples and men and women being able to swab themselves, then, hopefully, that'll, you know, make people come and get a check up.
It was interesting.
Yeah, it was interesting.
DOORBELL RINGS In Exeter, with results looming Annie's friend Charlotte pops round for a debrief.
So I, kind of, went in just for a normal Check, like .
.
check-up.
Have you ever had a check before? No.
I don't know, I just don't think I could literally walk in to the clinic and be like, "Hey check me out.
You wouldn't believe the amount of people that go in there.
It was packed when I went in.
It was quite awkward, cos they were all in there, really quietly.
You can tell that there were couples in there, sort of, having really bad days And then there was just Jonah going round on this little Thomas the Tank Engine.
Little Jonah boy.
Yeah.
Would you want another baby? No.
Really? No.
Not now.
Later on in life? Later on in life, definitely.
Definitely, definitely.
But not now.
What would I do? I would have to leave uni with half a degree.
Literally, ruin everything I've worked so hard for.
Yeah.
Be an absolute nightmare.
When I found out I was pregnant and they said, "We're going to We need to check for STIs and stuff.
" Because chlamydia can cause blindness in newborns When they come down, it can cause infection, things like that.
And that's when it hit me, I was like, "Oh, I know I'm pregnant, but I never thought about STIs before.
" I think I was so stupid.
Why didn't you use protection that night? I don't think either of us were expecting anything to happen.
I think we'd been seeing each other for a while and we both, sort of .
.
We were both, sort of, like just teasing each other, in a way.
But obviously, like, we didn't use anything.
Don't slap me.
So, how was? Well, I haven't even had the results back yet.
You haven't had the results yet No.
Jesus Christ.
Yeah, no news is good news.
I think getting STIs has always been an afterthought I don't think it's really ever been a thought at all, it's always just been pregnancy - number one.
I don't think I've ever really thought about STIs.
But then, when it comes to actually having to get an STI check, it is really likea shock.
You're like, "Why have you never thought about this before? "Oh, no, I'm really worried, what if I do have something?" Up north, it's results day for Joel.
He's hoping that his first sexual experiences haven't left him with any nasty surprises.
Even though it was my first time, it wasit wasn't a bad time.
I know people have had worse experiences.
And I'm happy that it's over and done with Will you always remember your first time? Yeah.
I don't care, at all.
Obviously me and my ex don't get along any more, but at the time, I did really like him and I did trust him.
Yeah.
So did you feel relieved afterwards? Not really.
Well, no.
Because you know when people say when you're a virgin, you're like, "Oh, I really need to lose it.
But then afterwards, you're like, "That was nothing.
Yeah.
That's exactly how I felt Afterwards, I was like Like it was overrated? Yeah, it's so overrated.
Obviously, it's enjoyable, but it was still like No sparks.
It was just "whatever".
It happened.
Are you excited? To get my results? Yeah.
I would be.
It's not, like, bothered me that much up until now, like, thinking about it.
Like I have trust in the person that he didn't have anything and if I find out that I do, I will lose so much respect for them.
Even though we have had our differences, like, I'd, literally, go crazy.
I see myself as a safe person, I'm not stupid, I don't do stupid things.
Yeah.
It'd be just mortifying if it happened to me.
I'd just like.
.
I don't actually know a lot about HIV, but, personally, it doesn't worry me that much.
I know it should, but, like, cos I'm new to the whole thing the gay thing, it's just, like.
.
It's not something that you want to be thinking about, it's quite off-putting.
If I got summat from it, as it was my first time, I'd be I'd be, literally, gutted.
It's the worst-case scenario, ever.
Joel is now on his way to get his results.
I'm going to go to Morrison's, get my hair dye and then I'm going to dye my hair and if it goes orange, I'm going to dye it again.
As well as swabbing genitals, taking bloods and administering jabs, sexual health staff must also make calls to the ex-partners of infected patients.
It's Michelle from the sexual health clinic in Leeds.
Are you OK to talk? One patient who's received that call is 25-year-old Slovakian, David I'm from Slovakia.
I'm not used to protection.
Slovakia is smaller so we don't have so much transmitted diseases, like there in the UK.
Patient notification is a massive part of our job.
We can only get in touch with somebody else if they give them permission.
And then it's anonymously, in't it? They might get a text or something.
We would never mention people's names.
It's a very simple process of, if we can get a phone number off somebody and make a phone call on their behalf, just to say, "We believe you've been in contact with "a sexually-transmitted infection and we'd like you to come down "and get yourself checked out.
A lot of the times people will say, "Can I ask who's given you that information?" We can't say.
We're not at liberty to say, cos it's important that we protect confidentiality People who are contacts, we try and make a priority to see 'em you know, that they're not waiting about cos they might have an infection.
David? David's had sexual contact with someone infected with syphilis.
I received a text that I should be tested for syphilis, so I think this will be the first, but, you know, I'm here, so test me for anything.
We'll do the whole shebang.
Have you noticed any discharge or anything leaking out of your penis? No.
No? OK.
Any ulcers? Sores? Sores, yeah? It could be around the penis, in the mouth, anything at all that you've noticed? No.
No.
OK.
Do you use condoms No.
Why not? I'm not used to it.
Well, you need to be used to it I know.
So can I get you to come up to the couch? You all right? It's tickling! OK, it's just a little bit of moisture at the tip, so with this sample, it's just a little loop that just goes into the tip.
Might feel a little bit scratchy, and when you go to the toilet afterwards you might just feel it a little bit more than usual, OK? afterwards you might just feel it a little bit more than usual, OK? It's quick.
Aah! Aah.
Well done.
David will have to wait a week before he learns his syphilitic fate.
But his swabs are tested immediately for other STIs.
And Jane has found a problem.
Lots and lots of pus.
It could be that they've got chlamydia, but we can't see chlamydia under the microscope, it's too small A lot of pus is not a good sign so David isn't going home just yet.
David.
All right, David.
How are you? Come on in.
Have a seat in the big blue chair.
So, looking at your slides under the microscope, there's a significant number of pus cells.
So, that shows that there is an infection there at the moment.
In 70% of cases, it's usually chlamydia.
OK? So I'm going to give you some treatment for chlamydia today.
OK? This isn't a confirmation of chlamydia.
Like the syphilis, David will have to wait a week for that.
But, as a precaution, Tim is starting him on a course of medication.
So, no sex for a week.
That includes any heavy foreplay.
You cannot get jiggy with it.
All right? Now, I can only wait and take some tablets, to be sure, and no sex It would be hard, it will be hard.
You know, we can pick syphilis up from people who have absolutely no symptoms and I think people think it is an infection that was around an awful long time ago, but it is on the increase, as are all infections, but obviously, not common, like chlamydia or anything, but it is on the increase and it is treatable.
Like, if you look back in history, they say how people went mad with syphilis.
King Henry VIII had it.
Were he mad? I don't know, towards end.
I'm a bit mad.
But I haven't got syphilis.
It's a big moment for Joel.
He's come back to the clinic to have a hepatitis B jab, but most importantly, receive his results.
.
.
dog bit me, so I had to get a hepatitis jab I don't think that's the same thing.
Or tetanus or whatever.
Tet Rabies.
Go on, Joel.
Good luck! Yeah, thanks.
Come on in.
Got your dungarees on today.
Yeah! You're not a decorator are you No.
I'm only joking.
Right.
So, remember, my name's Tim So, Joel, I've come to give you your second hepatitis B injection.
Yeah.
You're a bit wiser this time, you know what's coming this time.
Yeah, I do.
But more importantly, you want your results from when you came on the 18th, don't you So, you'll be pleased to know that everything is negative, so your urine sample for chlamydia and gonorrhoea was negative.
Yeah.
And we did a swab from the back of your throat and from your rectum, and that's come back negative, and your HIV and syphilis, your blood sample, came back negative.
Good! So, congratulations.
Thank you.
A full house.
You can sleep a little easier.
Yeah.
With a clear conscience.
I can.
Good man.
This side? Yeah, this side, I had it the other side last time.
OK.
Sharp scratch, one, two, three.
Well done.
Thank you.
All right mate.
Thank you.
See you later.
See you later.
Take care, bye-bye.
Hello! How did it go? Fantastic.
I'm negative for everything.
Woo! I'm happier than I thought I would be.
it's nice to know that you're actually clean.
Can fist pump.
Eve's got all the pressure now I've already had it, she can have it.
I think it's good going first.
A new dawn in Leeds means a new day in the battle against STIs.
And for Tony, it's not long until he gets his results.
All right? Can I have one small breakfast and one large breakfast, please He's met up with best mate Hayden for a bit of nosh.
We went back to mine, everyone went back there and everyone was just playing stupid games, like spin the bottle and shit like that, and we were a bit drunk, and she, er .
.
.
.
just, like, got in my bed and she goes, "Do you know what "I'm just going to give you head.
I'm just going to suck your dick " and I was like, "All right, whatever.
" But she were a bit over-enthusiastic, man.
Right.
It weren't good.
Honestly.
Someone bites your dick, you tell 'em to stop.
She didn't bite it, if she'd bit it, it'd be a different story, I'd have been, like, "What the fuck you doing?" But, it was just, like, scraping, and I was thinking, "That's a bit weird, like.
" Well, I can handle it.
But afterwards, mate, I looked at it and I thought, "Something's wrong with me, this girl's ruined me, man.
" When's the last time you banged someone, then? Quite a while ago, to be honest Did you use condoms? No.
No? Why didn't you use any condoms though? Honestly.
Just don't feel that good, innit? Cos you sleep with them I .
.
dirty girls man.
I don't sleep with no dirty girls, what you talking about, man? It's That's No, man, I'm a good boy.
Apparently, you should always wear a condom, even when you're getting a blow job.
TONY SCOFFS Don't give me that face.
I'll give you that face.
It's ridiculous, innit? Yeah.
Who the fuck does that? No-one, mate.
That's why there's so many problems.
If I were diagnosed with something, I'd be gutted.
That's why I'm stressing so much about it, I don'tI don't want to find that I've got something I've never used protection.
But I've always been in a relationship with a girl.
So, I've always felt safe.
I'm shitting myself now.
Tony is far from alone when it comes to being nervous about STI tests.
Can you just write for me your name and date of birth on there, please? Thank you.
Some people are so embarrassed about being checked out they use a false name when they check in.
A lot of people might just put "Steve" and surname declined.
So, on the notes, it'll - yeah.
.
On the notes it'll actually say "Steve Declined.
" Billy Elliot or Tommy Cooper or .
.
It's usually lads - don't they They usually give some sort of.
.
Yeah.
.
.
Mickey Mouse or Yeah But then we've had a couple of women that have used, like, pop star names like Beyonce andJordan, stuff like that.
I think the men are worse.
David Beckham.
That's what I just said, men are worse, yeah.
Yeah, it's not the real David Beckham.
He didn't have golden balls.
But there are some people who don't dare check in, at all So, Dr Nadia is preparing to take the clinic out on the road.
and we've got some flavoured ones, as well, so, like, apple, strawberries and bananas.
It's, basically, about information, testing and free condoms.
Today she's joining forces with a sexual health charity, to spread the word among men from the local African community.
HIV infection, it's well known to be a higher prevalence in the Afro-Caribbean community That is why we tend to focus our outreach works to get hold of the people that are now really sure what to believe in, so it will be quite good to try and burst some of these myths and facts, as well, when we go and see them, so it should be really exciting and, you know, I'm quite looking forward to it And she's hoping that a local Sunday morning football tournament .
.
is the perfect place to tackle fears about the clinic.
And you just have a read, cos.
.
I might ask some questions, as well.
Yeah.
About the confidentiality of the whole process.
Uh-huh.
Cos I might not want to find, like, my information somewhere maybe on the internet No, no It's a very sensitive issue No, I mean I can really assure you, some people even come and, like, give a different name, not that we encourage it, but, you know, your information is confidential.
We are as secure as the White House, I can tell you.
All right, cheers.
All right, take care now.
Take care.
With confidentiality worries put to one side So, you just pass some urine in there.
.
.
the interest in the testing kits picks up.
Where do you get these tests done? We do, like, some postal kits.
Yeah.
So, you just open it and, you know, pass the urine in and then fill your name in and put it in the post.
Condoms? That's fine.
And we do, like, some lube, as well.
I'll take some.
Perfect.
Yeah.
All right, take care now, bye.
It's a good idea to have them starter packs, they won't go out the house to get tested, they're nervous, so if you can do it at home, it's easier, then you can do your own stuff and your own business at home, no-one has to know.
I had chlamydia at one point, yeah, and I found out, and I had to, kind of, backtrack my partners and try tell 'em, just in case any of them had it, as well, so, you know, kind of embarrassing.
But it's not just chlamydia tests on offer.
Are you consenting to HIV testing today? Yeah.
The sexual health charity MESMAC are offering rapid tests for the life-changing infection HIV.
The last time I had an HIV test was about four months ago and I've slept with someone since then, so I just want to check it out right now.
Hopefully, everything's all right.
20-year-old Bongs is one of the first to take the opportunity.
It's always nerve-racking, because you never know what to expect.
It's, like, you won't see it right now, but inside, I'm just shaking.
If you just slightly relax.
Short, sharp scratch, are you ready? Yeah.
Having unprotected sex just once may be enough to contract HIV and, within 20 minutes, Bongs will find out if he's caught the life-changing virus.
So, how are you feeling now, waiting? Um, nervous, now.
You know, waiting is just the worst part about it.
Mm.
Yeah.
It's a good time to reflect, isn't it? Yeah, definitely.
Definitely! Nice break, that.
Tony's results are due today and he's hoping a friendly game of pool will take his mind off it.
What would you rather have, if you had a disease or infection? Oh, I don't know.
Crabs.
Crabs You can just get rid of it.
That's shit, man.
It's still asexually-transmitted infection, innit? SoI don't know, man.
Do you reckon it's going to be all right? Yeah, course it is! You know for a fact? I don't know for a fact, no.
I don't know for a fact.
One fact Tony is sure of is that he's never used a condom, which means he's at risk of contracting all STIs.
In your head, you think you've got something, don't you Yeah, I do, yeah.
Yeah, I knew you did.
You think you've got I'm shitting myself.
You reckon you've got chlamydia No, I don't I don't know, I don't even fucking know what chlamydia is.
I'm stressed as fuck.
PHONE CHIMES Is that a text? That's a text Ohh Oh, let's have a look.
Read it Do you want me to read it for you? Just unlock it man, I'll read it.
Don't be a pussy.
Click it.
INTAKE OF BREATH Anthony, all your results from your recent visit are negative.
Yeah! That's it! Oosh! Actually, I'm all right now.
Yeah.
Yeah, yeah.
Chilled out, now.
That was fucking stressful.
THEY LAUGH I'm negative.
"I'm negative.
" I'm over the fucking moon.
Honestly, I'm I'm ecstatic.
Look at me, I mean, am I glowing? Yeah.
I feel like I'm glowing.
Yeah.
No, I'm happy.
Give me some.
Oosh! You fucking bastard.
I mean, now I've been to the clinic and I've got I've got a fucking closet-worth of fucking condoms, I think I'll I think I think I'll I'll use a few.
Well, if I get the chance! Do you reckon you could use that as, like, a pick-up line? You all right, love? You ever been with a guy that's all clear, yeah? Yeah.
No? Tonight's your lucky night, then.
Check out this text.
25-year-old David is awaiting his STI results and, specifically, if he has syphilis.
Effects, if left untreated, syphilis can eventually cause damage to the brain, nerves, eyes, heart, blood vessels, liver, bones and joints.
Oh, what are joints? David prefers one-night stands and he hooks up with most of them online.
I went to the website because I was bored and horny.
This one particular website is good when you want to When you want to have sex, but when you want to make friends, er, and just go outside and speak and chat and blah-blah, it's absolutely useless.
Usually, when I go fuck somebody, I ask, "Do you have something? "Are you tested?" blah-blah-blah, and everybody says no.
I can't have any proof "Show me your results" or something like that.
It's impossible, that's No.
But now one of David's one-night stands has tested positive for syphilis, he'll have to return to the clinic to find out if he's also been infected.
Back at the football tournament Bongs has been waiting for his HIV result and he's taking the time to reflect.
Cos they don't want to be seen in that sort of environment and stuff.
Cos when someone sees them, "Oh, you just went to, oh, "sexual health clinic, probably he's got this, probably he's got that.
" Something, yeah.
Yeah.
But then, probably, as you grow, you just don't mind, cos it's just about your health It doesn't matter what people say.
After 20 minutes, the result is ready.
As you can see, there's control lines there, so it's worked correctly, and these two windows are clear so we're happy in saying that that's an HIV negative test today.
Yeah, I can breathe now.
Can breathe, taken about two hours to check it out, but you know, I can breathe.
That 20 minutes just felt like two hours.
I just went to go do the test, you know.
Everything's all right.
Everything's all right.
Told you it was all right.
I was just jumping around, you know, even though it took about two hours, you know I was just jumping around.
No, I'm joking, just 20 minutes Yeah, it's been a really fantastic day, you know, I really got the message across and, you know, people have really responded, even like much better than we thought.
Our box of postal kits is almost empty and the condoms, as well so it's been a really good day As we said, there are people that are hard to reach.
Some people, you know don't even know that the clinic exists, so that is why it's important to get out into the community, into the grass roots tell people about us and, hopefully, they go and tell their friends as well.
I'm dangerous.
So am I.
Joel has recently had his results and he's all clear.
Today, it's Eve's turn.
'I'd tell my mum, I'd tell my sister and then I'd tell my ex-boyfriend.
' Oh, I've been put off.
'I saw him the other day, I think, a couple of weeks ago 'and I said to him, "I'm getting an STI test", and he was like, "OK, well, text me the results" and I was like, "Well, I will.
What if they do come back, like, positive? Well, I'm going to get it sorted straight away, I'll be obviously upset, but because it's treatable, I'll be OK.
Are you sure? I'll just be really angry with my ex, that's all.
Yeah.
I am actually getting a bit nervous now.
Are you actually? Yeah, because they haven't texted me yet and I hope they don't ring me like, "Eve, it's serious", and I'm like, "Fuck off, bye.
" Shit! Shut up.
No, but it's stupid, because if you did, then it'd No, and if I did Like, people have a reality shock, like, cos they're a slut, but you're actually not, so it'll be just like stupid.
Yeah, exactly.
PHONE CHIMES Oh, my God, I got a text.
Eve, this text is to confirm all your results are negative.
Whoo! HE CHUCKLES We're all clear.
All clear.
I'm pretty happy.
I'm really happy actually.
You're not a slut, after all.
Yay! Right, who do I call first? It's over.
Do I call my ex or do I call me mum? That's if he answers the phone HE CHUCKLES You need to tell him that you've got something.
Hi, it's Eve.
Hi, I just wanted to tell you that I've been to the STI clinic and it's all clear, so you don't have anything, either.
It's all right, I'll speak to you later.
Bye.
Well, I won't speak to you later, actually, bye.
'I feel absolutely wonderful that my test results were negative, 'I felt so good about it.
' It's like a reality check.
At first, you're just like, "Oh, it's fine, they'll be all right, I never get something", but then when it comes to the moment you're like, "What if I do?" I'd still definitely use condoms all the time.
Like, condoms are a must, unless you know somebody is a virgin when you meet them It sounds a bit silly but, you know, cos if you only just meet somebody, you just don't know - they could be a serial killer, for all you know.
Down on the Devon coast, single mum Annie is awaiting news from the clinic.
'If it's not fine, I'll be really shocked.
'I think I've always got lucky, really.
' I've never had anything before but, you know, there's always that chance that I could have something, like when I got pregnant with Jonah, I could've easily had an STI or an STD, but luckily for me, I got Jonah instead.
MOBILE PHONE RINGS Hello.
PHONE: 'Hello, can I speak to Annie please?' Yeah, that's me.
'Annie, hello, it's Fiona.
I'm phoning from the walk-in centre.
' Yeah.
'Hello, are you OK to talk for a moment?' Yeah, that's fine.
'So we did a swab test to check for gonorrhoea and chlamydia 'so that's all fine, and we did a blood test to check for HIV 'and syphilis and that's fine, as well.
OK?' Brilliant.
'So it's all all right.
' Thanks, bye.
'OK, take care, bye-bye.
' Yay! Happy.
Definitely.
I think from now on, 100% protection all the way.
Whoo! It's Friday and David's wait is over.
Today, he'll find out if he has syphilis or any other STI.
Is it David? Yeah.
Yeah, take a seat in the waiting room on level one upstairs.
OK, thank you.
Thank you.
I was looking at a lot of websites and they are quite nasty things Not good to have anything from that.
But definitely syphilis is still better than HIV.
Health adviser Jane is giving David his results.
So, come in, David.
Yeah.
Just take a seat where you like So, David, I'm Jane, one of the health advisors.
You came and had some tests done last week.
Mm-hmm.
We found what we call non-specific urethritis when you were here and we gave you some tablets.
Well, your results have come back and we have confirmed that to be chlamydia.
We've looked for syphilis and that's come back negative.
Mm-hmm.
The good news is David doesn't have syphilis, but the bad news is he does have chlamydia.
But the good news is that it's all cleared up.
I had chlamydia.
And I was taking pills for one week, so I'm treated.
I could be also angry at this partner which I have this from, but I'm not, I don't care.
Live your life and just forget That's the end of Friday, thank goodness, now it's the weekend So it's now time to start cleaning everything down.
We like to keep our standards high, make sure everything's clean.
Take these back.
Go in the lab.
Have a good night, bye.
Bye.
Bye.
Go home.
Bye, everyone, see you later.
Bye, guys, see you next week.
I don't feel too demoralised that, come Monday morning, we've got as many people waiting to be treated again.
It's keeping me in a job.
Don't want to be too successful No, but ultimately, I'm in the job to help people, make people better.
You know, we are going to be a busy clinic.
I always think we will be a busy clinic, one way or another.
But you just hope you can educate people on the way and save a few souls.
The week is over, the daily battle is done, but the war on STIs can never be won.
I look forward to going home.
My brain feels a bit fuzzy now.
Huh.
