Valor (2017) s01e13 Episode Script

Costs of War

1 Go, go, go, go, go! GALLO: They have the package.
Everyone brace! GALLO: We're going down.
[PANTING, GRUNTING.]
I'm an American citizen.
Don't let him do this.
Move! Or I will shoot through you.
We lied in our debriefs.
We made that decision together.
PORTER: I cannot look at you without thinking about all the lies.
I'm sorry.
I can't do this anymore.
We both know our relationship has some blurry lines.
HASKINS: This is what we've been working toward for months.
Our mission is to rescue Sergeant Jimmy Kam and capture Khalid Samatar alive.
JIMMY: Khalid has sent uranium to an associate in the U.
S.
to make a bomb.
We're hit.
Come on.
He got you in the shoulder.
Lucky me.
Jimmy.
- He's dead.
He's dead.
- Hey! Come on.
I got a family to get back to.
I know this woman.
It's Olivia Benning.
We found the bomber.
ANDREW: The charge on the tail rotor went off as planned, but the pilots survived.
They're trying to find their way out of the bunker right now.
- Should I finish it? - Yes.
And make it look clean.
JIMMY: I know there's a back way out.
Heard them talk about it a few times.
Too bad you didn't bring any bread crumbs.
All these tunnels look the same.
Ha.
Hey, smartass, you want to lead the way, be my guest.
Man, I've missed our banter.
All right, boys, you're gonna have a whole plane ride to catch up.
Let's pick up the pace.
- [GRUNTS.]
- You okay? GALLO: Yeah, I'll be fine.
HASKINS [OVER COMM.]
: Gallo, Madani, do you read? Yes, sir.
We're still trying to find our way out.
Looks like Khalid called in support from a nearby village before he died.
60 men, give or take.
The Little Birds will try to hold them off, but there's only so long they can.
I'd estimate 20 minutes.
You need to be in the air by then, or you will find yourselves in a hell of a firefight.
[EXHALES.]
PEREZ: Everything's under control.
Has anyone seen the suspect? Negative.
I got guys in there now, no sign of Olivia Benning.
Everyone who's inside went through those? I've been assured that's the case.
We swept the area before the event.
That is not good enough.
We know that this is the target, we should evacuate.
Based on what? A hunch? No one's actually seen this woman in the area.
Evacuating would be chaos.
Okay, well, Lieutenant Porter and I are gonna - go inside and look for ourselves.
- Be my guest.
Hey, bomb tech guy.
- With us.
- Yes, ma'am.
Stop a second.
I felt a breeze.
It was just a little bit.
It's coming from that direction.
Anchor Zero-Six, it looks like we've found a way out.
HASKINS: Roger that.
You need to get to the exfil site, ASAP.
Alpha and Bravo Teams are already en route.
How's that leg holding up, Sergeant? [PANTING.]
Actually, you two are holding it up.
And the morphine.
Yeah, well, hang in there.
We'll get to the helo in one piece.
- Two, tops.
- [CHUCKLES.]
Hopefully, uh, the CIA operator meets us there.
He kind of disappeared on us.
Yeah, there's something I should maybe tell you, Sergeant.
Just a second.
What's going on? Look, it's probably nothing.
But when he went to sweep the perimeter, I saw him grab a gun from one of the dead tangos.
Officer Andrew has his own weapon.
You sure this isn't the morphine talking? No.
That don't make any sense.
You okay? Yeah.
I'm just not used to being out in the open.
But I'm good.
Anchor Zero-Six, this is Madani.
We've made it out of the bunker.
Headed to the exfil site.
Roger that.
Since Renegade One-Two has been destroyed, that leaves only one Black Hawk to carry two helos' worth of personnel.
With Khalid's guys on the way, there's no time to bring in another bird.
Sir, that's gonna be rough with all that weight.
We'll have to do a max gross takeoff.
Luckily, it ain't my first rodeo.
Good.
'Cause the other pilots have never done one in the field.
Sir, you need two arms to fly a helo.
Yeah, it still works.
I'll power through the pain.
Easy-peasy.
Let's move.
[INSECTS CHIRPING.]
[GUN COCKS.]
In too many pockets of the globe, there are cities crying out for the moral indignation of their citizens Hey.
Have you seen this woman? - No, sorry.
- only to learn that their pain has been met by deafening silence.
Have you seen this woman anywhere? - MAGNUS: Washington bureaucracy - [MOUTHS.]
weary of ensnarling our armed forces and ground operations.
Sir.
Have you seen this woman anywhere? Yeah.
A few minutes ago.
- You just saw her? - Yeah, she was leaving.
- She went out that way.
- All right.
I'm going after her.
If she planted that bomb here, you need to find it.
MAGNUS: And make no mistake.
As we retreat, others march on.
- What are you doing? - We have a situation, sir.
The suspect was here, which means the bomb was likely planted in this room.
- What's going on? - I need these people evacuated now.
Take care of it.
Ladies and gentlemen, um We have reason to believe that there's a bomb in this room.
You need to leave immediately.
[INDISTINCT CHATTER.]
I really hope you're right about this.
I really hope I'm not.
Excuse me.
[GRUNTS.]
[GUNSHOTS.]
Looks like Sergeant Cho was on to something.
[GRUNTS.]
What the hell just happened? We heard shots.
COOGAN: That was me.
He heard me coming up behind, turned his gun on me, tried to fire, so I fired back.
With better aim.
What were you even doing here? Well, if that's your way of thanking me for saving your lives, you're welcome.
Also honored to finally meet you, Sergeant Kam.
- Thank you.
- Yeah.
But what do you mean, "saving our lives"? Oh, Sergeant Cho told me that she saw him take a gun from one of the dead hostiles.
That obviously raised some questions, so I followed him, saw him lining up to shoot y'all.
He was trying to make it seem like one of Khalid's guys did it.
And the way the tail rotor blew.
You think he sabotaged it? Makes sense.
Are you kidding me? None of this makes any sense.
- Why is he trying to kill you? - That's a good question.
But if we don't get out before Khalid's friends arrive it ain't really gonna matter.
THEA: The bomb could be anywhere in the room.
And this Professor Benning, you believe she's been radicalized? No, we don't know what her motives are.
We just know that she was here.
Look, I would feel a lot better if the two of you weren't.
MAGNUS: Well, you should go, too.
All right? Let these professionals do their jobs.
I'm not gonna leave until we find it.
The uranium wouldn't be here in the first place if it wasn't for our operation.
- Did a woman run past here? - Yes, to the right.
And what about my son? Where is he? He went after Benning.
Olivia! - Stop.
- Ian? - Olivia! - Don't come any closer.
I can set it off with this.
Stall her.
We still haven't found the bomb.
Olivia.
Why are you doing this? I thought that I knew you.
Is that why they sent you? They thought it'd make a difference? Your government thinks it can kill innocent people anywhere in the world.
I'm sending a message.
This is not the way.
Blood for blood.
It's the only thing people like Tucker Magnus understand.
This is about Magnus? That's who you're after? Sweep around the table where Magnus was sitting.
Olivia, they have already evacuated that building.
Magnus is long gone, and everyone else is, too.
The thing about a dirty bomb is, it's full of radioactive dust.
All that bomb has to do is blow out a wall, and half of downtown will be breathing poison.
Got it.
Can you defuse it? - I'll try.
- Try fast.
Everyone that you would hurt, they they have loved ones.
Family, friends.
Think about that.
Is this really how you want to be remembered? [SIREN WAILING.]
Don't.
Don't do this, Olivia.
Olivia.
- Don't Don't.
- [BEEPS.]
The bomb has been defused.
COOGAN: Khalid's backup's five klicks away.
We need to get out of here now.
A max gross takeoff is serious business.
With all due respect, I'd rather do it.
You've only done it in training.
Yeah, but I got two good arms.
Doesn't matter if you have three.
You don't know how to use them.
This is my bird, Captain.
I'll do it.
I've done the maneuver before, I have two good arms, and since I don't have a penis, I don't feel the need to join in this pissing contest.
When have you ever done this before? In training.
Just like him.
Since we have too much weight to hover, we accelerate quickly, keep the wheels on the ground.
Once we hit liftoff speed, we pull up.
Hopefully before we smash into that mountain.
I got it.
MADANI: Everybody buckle up.
It's gonna be a bumpy ride.
[RUMBLING, CLATTERING.]
Watch your power.
You push too hard, she'll quit.
I don't push hard enough, we're never gonna get off the ground.
Well, then maybe you should push just right.
Madani.
Not yet.
Not yet.
Madani! Now! [GASPS.]
- [LAUGHS.]
- [WHOOPS.]
- [WHOOPING, LAUGHTER.]
- GALLO: Yeah, yeah! Whoa, let's never do that again.
[WHOOPING, LAUGHTER.]
- [MADANI SHOUTS.]
- GALLO: Anchor Zero-Six, we are in flight and are RTB.
See? Easy-peasy.
[MADANI LAUGHS, WHOOPS.]
I've been thinking.
Look, I know we talked about coming clean after we got Jimmy and made it home Still the plan.
Still my plan.
How exactly is that gonna work? We just walk up to the colonel and say, "Hey, you remember that mission with CIA Officer Richard? "Yeah? Well "she shot and killed the guy "and then we covered it up for months.
We're ready for a court-martial.
" We did it for the right reasons, Gallo.
To get to the bottom of this.
But we haven't, not yet.
A CIA field agent just tried to kill us.
I'm betting anything that's connected.
Someone thinks we know too much.
Richard was a traitor.
We got proof of that.
But clearly, it didn't stop with him.
There are six doubles in a domino set, right? Six people who were part of the CIA's uranium operation.
Now, we know four of them, but not double-twos and not snake eyes.
We need to find out who they are and if they still have any of that uranium.
This isn't just about us anymore, Madani.
Other people could get hurt if these guys aren't caught.
I think you might be right.
Don't act so surprised.
It happens.
C-17's loading for home in ten mikes.
I'll see you out there.
[CHEERING.]
Hold on a sec.
Young boy, what you fighting for? - Who taught you to be afraid - Jimmy.
Of what you don't know? [CRIES.]
Young man - What you looking for? - Are you really here? - Are you okay? - JIMMY: Yeah, I'm okay, I'm okay.
You're part of a plan Hey, big guy.
I'm home.
I'm home.
HASKINS: We have a lot of heroes here.
Men and women of the Operation Perseus Team, you have performed this mission with intelligence, precision and valor.
Because of that, you have brought home one of our own.
Sergeant Jimmy Kam.
[APPLAUSE AND CHEERING.]
HASKINS: And now let's take a moment of silence for those we've lost along the way.
Share the past we're all made of We have different Shadow Raiders.
Dismissed! We can choose to change And rise above 'Cause love is love Hey.
Love is love You all right? I'm still here, so yeah.
Love is love It's really good to see you again.
It's good to see you, too, Ian.
Welcome home.
Congratulations, Captain Gallo.
How's the arm? Yeah, they say six weeks, it'll be like new.
Look at that.
I need to talk to you.
Madani and Coogan, too.
We read your mission debriefs.
Sounds like the sergeant here saved your asses.
The question, though, is why did Officer Andrew want to kill you? Considering he was one of your colleagues, we were hoping you could shed some light on that.
I've gone through his file.
There's no red flags.
Aiming an AK at three soldiers isn't a red flag? You know what I mean.
Mind if we take a look at that file? I think they've earned a look, don't you? This might help.
It's his gear.
There's a phone in there.
It's encrypted.
Well, that's not a long-term problem.
The long-term and short-term problem is someone gave that guy an order to kill us.
Unless he was acting alone.
I've apprised Magnus of the situation.
He is looking into it, too.
Well, excuse me if that doesn't exactly fill my pockets with confetti.
We will get to the bottom of this.
In the meantime, be careful.
Anything I can help with? Absolutely not.
You just relax.
I will call you when it's ready.
It smells great.
Well, I am making all of your favorites.
Oh, you didn't have to.
- Gotcha! - [GASPS.]
- Max You cannot do that.
- MAX: Why not? We do it all the time.
Hey, it's fine.
It's fine.
It's just we haven't done "gotcha" in a while.
I wasn't ready for it.
Go wash your hands for dinner, okay? I'm really sorry about that.
Hey, Jess, it's fine.
He's a kid.
Hey.
You don't need to treat me like I'm made of glass.
I just want to make sure that everything is okay.
That you are okay.
You know that you can talk to me about All I want to do is move forward.
I have my debrief with the brass on Monday.
Once I get through that, I'm good.
Anything interesting? [GROANS.]
Nothing that connects this guy to the Richard mission and nothing that explains why he would do it.
[EXHALES.]
Well, there's something else we should talk about, too.
Now we're back.
The mule in the stable, so to speak.
You know, you and I are kind of like the end of Speed.
The end of Speed? Keanu, Sandra Bullock.
He says, "Relationships based on intense experiences never last.
" Then he's not in Speed 2, so clearly in their case, it was true.
- Clearly.
- But doesn't have to be.
And, yes, I know they're fictional characters.
I'm having trouble, you know, finding the point to this.
My point is I want to give this a shot.
We can't.
Not while we're in the same chain of command.
I could transfer to another unit.
I can't ask you to give up being a Shadow Raider, not after how hard you've worked to get here.
It's my choice to make.
I don't know what to say.
Just say you'll think about it.
GALLO: So, when do you think they're gonna let you back up in the air? - Oh, it's hard to say.
- Yeah.
I've got that debrief with the JSOC commander on Monday.
Then we'll see what happens.
Listen, man, um not everything's over and done.
I want to apologize.
For what? You came to me before the mission that started all of this and, uh, you said you had a bad feeling.
I should've listened to you.
If you've been blaming yourself for this, you should stop right now.
You saved my life.
Once I'm clear, I'm back to being your crew chief first chance I get.
Well, hell, here's to that.
Mmm.
It's weird, man.
We go through all these crazy experiences together.
We just push them aside.
Don't think about it.
Move forward.
No way that's not coming back on us someday.
It's the price we pay for doing what we do.
Hi.
Thought you might be running.
You weren't home, so Can we talk? Yeah, sure.
I was just finishing up.
The other day I was standing across from a woman who could've detonated a bomb at any second.
Seemed really likely I might die.
I couldn't stop thinking about you.
I promised myself that I would tell you that if I survived.
It was a mistake to end things, Nora.
I want to give this another try.
Ian.
You know how much I care about you.
But But you were right when you said we needed some time apart.
We had real problems, babe.
And even though most of them were my fault, I think they were symptoms.
Symptoms of what? [PHONE CHIMES.]
Of how disconnected we'd become.
Some time alone will do us both good.
Yup, I understand.
[PHONE CHIMES.]
They're calling me in.
Go.
I'm sorry.
THEA: We had one of our techs de-encrypt Officer Andrew's phone.
You were right.
Someone did give him the orders.
Not only to blow the tail rotor but to execute the two of you.
The orders came from code name Matador.
Matador? Isn't that? Officer Richard, yes.
We had written him off as dead, lost in hostile territory.
Clearly we were wrong.
He must have escaped Somalia the night your helo crashed.
He's been in hiding ever since.
Turns out Richard and Andrew knew each other.
They'd trained together at the Farm.
When we went and talked to Andrew's family, they told us about an influx of cash to one of his accounts.
We believe that Richard paid him to do this.
As to why he wanted you dead, you were witnesses the night he exfil'd Goundry.
He must have thought that you saw something you shouldn't have.
They've assured me that an international manhunt is underway to find Richard.
We will catch him.
MADANI: This makes no sense.
GALLO: Yeah.
Richard is dead.
He had no pulse.
We rolled him into a lake.
Right.
Richard can't be Matador.
Magnus is the one who said he was.
After we saw the code name in Goundry's papers.
He sounded pretty damn certain about it at the time.
You know, I don't think we can chalk this up to a mistake.
So he lied.
You think Magnus is the one who actually I don't know if he ordered the hit, but I sure as hell know Richard didn't.
And Magnus clearly knows more than he's saying.
We're the only ones who can prove that.
The only ones who know Richard is dead.
But saying so means we have to face the consequences.
[WHISPERS.]
: Yeah.
Captain Gallo, Ms.
Madani, how can I help you? Sir, we have to tell you something.
You concealed the truth for months.
There's no justification for that.
Sir, Madani wanted to come clean right after it happened.
I convinced her we needed to find answers first.
I made my own choices.
It's not on him.
I don't care who did what when.
You violated about a dozen Army regulations.
And as for Magnus, that's a pretty massive accusation you're making, that he's willfully lying.
You have two witnesses to Richard's death right here.
He must be lying.
I'll bring it to Thea.
- I believe we can trust her.
- So do we, sir.
Now, about the two of you.
This cannot go unpunished.
Lying on your debriefs, potentially endangering other soldiers with those lies, these are serious charges.
And you will need to face them in military court.
Understood, sir.
This is very cloak-and-dagger.
I like it.
What's up? I know Matador isn't Richard's code name.
[LAUGHS.]
What are you talking about? Richard is Dead.
He's been dead for months.
Which means he isn't the one who gave those orders to Officer Andrew, which means he isn't Matador.
He never has been.
There's only one reason that you'd be lying to me, as far as I can tell.
Richard wasn't acting alone when he went rogue.
You've been behind this the entire time.
The colonel agrees.
He wants to go to the FBI about this.
With what proof? I followed the money.
It's your own fault, really.
You taught me there's always a trail when money's involved, and you taught me how to find it.
So I followed the money that was given to Officer Andrew.
Traced it to a shell company.
And then to another and then to another.
Until finally I got to that little country in the West Indies.
And that's where most people would have had to stop, but I traced that company to you.
You're Matador.
[LAUGHS.]
Uh, this-this is very impressive.
You know, i-in a weird way, I'm actually kind of proud of you.
What do you want? Sir, I respect you.
Whatever you have done, you have done it for a good reason, I am sure.
Tell me what that is, and then I will help get Haskins off your trail.
Are you wearing a wire? You want to check, be my guest.
All right, well, we need to go - someplace more secure.
- No, there's no time.
Colonel Haskins wants to go to the Bureau about this right away.
I convinced him to give me an hour to do some digging.
But if I don't get back to him soon, this will all blow up.
Why did you tell Richard not to destroy the uranium? - Were you selling it? - Yes.
To the paramilitary wing of Svoboda.
Ukrainian white nationalists.
They are a known terror group.
Look, I don't agree with all their views, okay? But we do agree on one very important thing: radical Islam is the single greatest threat to this planet.
All right, Thea, you know that our government's hands are tied in so many ways! If Svoboda can set off a few dirty bombs in ISIS's biggest strongholds, they will be decimated! So the enemy of my enemy is my friend.
- Is that what you are saying? - I am a patriot, just like you.
We are doing what is best for our country.
It didn't work! The uranium ended up in a bomb that nearly killed you.
Yeah, well, things don't always go as planned.
And when they don't, one must cover one's tracks.
That's why you ordered the hit on Gallo and Madani.
You were right.
Those pilots know more than they are telling.
They're a liability, Thea, and I do not do liabilities.
And Goundry? You ordered Officer Richard to kill him in Somalia, and when he survived that, you got the sniper to do it.
You really are very good.
Yeah.
Yeah, I am.
[TIRES SCREECH.]
Oh, God, Thea.
Tucker Magnus? You're under arrest.
Everything we need recorded on this device right here.
You guys aren't the only ones with neat toys.
There is someone else above you in this, isn't there? You had a double-two domino.
Who's snake eyes? I don't know what you're talking about.
I just don't understand it.
I need to talk to you about something.
- It's about Nora.
- [PHONE RINGING.]
The colonel agreed that we would wait until after the arrest to Uh, damn it.
It's my mom.
She's called me, like, five times.
Hold on.
Hey, what is going on? SIMONE: I just heard they're arresting Director Magnus.
Yeah.
The FBI just took him away a minute ago.
Hey, how did you even know about that? I'm on the House Intel Committee, son.
Knowing is my job.
You have any idea that he was capable of something like this? First met him, what, last month, when I gave him those e-mails that you so helpfully procured for me.
It's not the right time.
Of course, honey.
I just wanted to make sure you're okay, you know.
After this and what happened with Nora.
What happened with Nora? They're probably gonna keep us here overnight.
Good old government efficiency.
[DOOR OPENS.]
Colonel said I could come see you.
Wanted you to know the FBI has taken Magnus into custody.
So it's not for nothing.
We got the bad guy.
One of them, at least.
This isn't how I wanted it to end up.
I think you did the right thing over there.
Both of you.
I appreciate that, Porter.
Um I, uh brought you this.
Good luck charm.
I figured you might need it.
Thank you.
You know you told me once, you joined up to be one of the good guys.
So did I.
You know, for the first time in a while I really feel like I am.
Jimmy? There is a swelling storm - Jimmy? - [GASPS.]
And I'm caught up in the middle I'm so sorry, I'm I'm I'm just not used to the bed yet.
[SNIFFLES.]
The person that I thought I was The boy I used to know But there is a light [SNIFFLES.]
Beds are overrated.
[CHUCKLES.]
This debrief I have to do tomorrow.
I I don't think I can.
It comes and goes in waves It always does I'm not ready to talk about it yet.
And the freedom of falling - I'm sorry.
- You know what? Set in stone, it slips through Then you won't.
And if anybody has anything to say about that, they can come and talk to me.
Okay? It comes and goes in waves Okay.
And carries us away Through the wind Down to the place we used to lay when we were kids.
GALLO: Please tell me you're not our lawyer.
You won't be needing a lawyer.
Colonel? A decision has been made to relieve you both of your duties as Shadow Raiders.
And as officers of the United States Army.
- What? - We're being discharged? W-Without a trial? Thanks to your work uncovering Magnus's crimes, I have convinced the powers that be that a trial isn't necessary.
All charges against you can be dropped.
"Can be"? Wha? You have a choice.
You can take your chances in a military court, which I can almost guarantee will not end well, or you can come fly for a CIA Special Activities unit under my command.
Doing what, exactly? Unfortunately, not all of the uranium was recovered.
Some of it made it to the Ukraine, as Magnus intended, so we need to get it back.
And that may require doing some things that the Army rules won't allow.
MADANI: Sir.
You're okay with this? This is not how I intended for things to go down, but under the circumstances, I would advise you both to take the deal.
You'll accomplish nothing by sitting in prison.
And if things go well on the civilian side, then maybe we can revisit your future here.
But for now, good luck.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
So I assume you're in.
Trust me, you'll enjoy working for the Agency.
We operate a little more freely than you're used to.
Yeah, we've noticed.
Plus, we have looser rules on fraternization, so you can stop pretending there's nothing between you.
Okay, well, you'll be briefed later today on the mission.
Are we all clear? I don't know what you expect us to say.
"Thank you" would be nice.
[DOOR CLOSES.]
So now we have to go work for the CIA, the same people who got us in this mess in the first place.
Yeah.
But we'll also get to finish what we started.
I have no idea how to feel right now.
I'm with you there.
But I got an idea what might help.
Hey.
- What? - You lied to me.
I'm sorry, you're gonna have to be a little bit more specific than that.
You told me that you had just met Magnus.
I found a classified recommendation in his file, signed by you, from five years ago.
I was protecting you.
If you're going to run for office, we can't have you dragged down by unsavory associations.
And now that Magnus is gonna be prosecuted, the less connection the better.
You are connected to him.
That's why these recommendations are classified.
So no one can see them.
You want a drink? What? No.
Ma I actually feel for the man.
Right idea.
Just went about it the wrong way.
That is a gross understatement, Mom.
Honey, I'm not saying that I agree with his methods, I am just saying that his heart was in the right place.
You really believe that? Ever since your father's death, it has been clear to me that national security is the st important responsibility of this government.
You agree, don't you? Yes, of course, but there are limits.
Yeah, I got to get back.
No honey, look.
All you need to do is focus on your career.
Tucker Magnus is going to prison and you helped put him there.
That is gonna look so good on your résumé.
Oh, my [GRUNTS.]
Please.
For once, trust your mother.
Good-bye.
All right.
I heard they're finally tearing this place down next week.
Last chance for some wall-bashing therapy.
Think you can do it with one hand? Sure as hell gonna try.
We all got to do what it takes to keep going, right? [GRUNTS.]
[WHOOPS.]
Time is fleeting [LAUGHS.]
Passing by All I can do Is sit here and cry Who'll be coming To take my soul? I feel so heavenly Really, really good.
I hope so.
