The Proffer

Previously on Vanished The kidnappers want him to confirm Wallace Rainer.
Why are you calling me Wallace? I want to be certain that you understand how much is riding on your vote.
If they hurt her I'll kill you, do you understand me? Either you go public and withdraw your nomination, or I go public about our baby.
Ms.
Nash? This is Marcy Collins.
What can I do for you? I feel like talking, live, on the air.
I know exactly what I'm going to say.
The craftsmanship dates it back at least 2000 years.
What is it? It's a cipher-wheel.
So, it's an ancient decoder ring.
Well it would have been designed to decode a specific text from its time period.
You must feel very alone right now.
But people are worried about you.
People here, people who have known you for a very long time.
I think your research into the Dead Sea Scrolls uncovered something the kidnappers are looking for.
And once you're out, they will come after you, just like they came after your wife.
And I guarantee you, they will use her to make you cooperate.
Sara? Hello? Thank god.
You're a prisoner? We both are.
After two dramatic delays, the confirmation hearing of Wallace Rainer has concluded.
Judge Rainer has been confirmed as the 111th Supreme Court justice of the United States.
A controversial nominee of the president, the conservative Rainer is considered a strict constructionist and has been under the microscope for much of the last two months.
His confirmation has long thought to hinge on the vote of Senator Jeffrey Collins, a longtime friend.
But despite that friendship, it appeared at times that Senator Collins waffled in his support.
Of course with the kidnapping of his wife Sara Collins, the senator has been under tremendous stress in recent weeks.
With the Supreme Court scheduled to convene in just a few days, there is no question that Rainer's conservative views will have an immediate impact on our nation's legal system.
From Washington, DC, this is Judy Nash.
Thank you for your vote, Jeffrey.
I'm glad this is finally over.
It's not over, Wallace.
You still have her.
I don't have anyone.
I have done what you wanted.
I want Sara back, now.
Senator.
I'll be home waiting for your call.
What is it? It's Marcy, she's in the hospital.
Oh, God.
Hey.
Hey baby.
Go slow.
It's okay, you're fine.
What about I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, baby.
Excuse me.
I need a few moments with Ms.
Collins.
I'll be I'll be right outside.
How are we feeling? You lost a lot of blood.
I had to perform a DNC, it's a fairly routine procedure.
You may experience some bleeding over the next seven days.
That's normal.
Why did this happen? Marcy, the miscarriage rate for first-time pregnancies is close to 25%.
What happened to you, happens to a lot of women.
I want you to test me.
Do you mean as far as future ability to conceive -- No, test my blood.
I'm sorry, but, why-- I want to know if there's anything irregular.
There's a counselor in a hospital, if you want to -- I don't need a shrink, I want to know if anyone made me lose my baby! Now that the senator has paid the ransom, we're hoping to retrieve Sara.
Tac Teams fueled up and standing by, kidnappers just have to let us know when and where.
What about the Senator? They may contact him directly.
On his way back from DC.
Marcy had a miscarriage last night.
He's headed to the hospital to see her.
Could it get any worse for these people? Yeah, it could.
This is Lucas.
I have information about Sara Collins.
We have a tip line sir, how did you get this number? I know the senator has met their demands.
The Rainer confirmation.
Who is this? You and I have never spoken, but I was acquainted with agent Kelton.
He contacted me shortly before he was killed.
You sent that Nathan cards.
Yes.
All right, you got my attention.
But the kidnappers demands were met, this is over.
Why contact me now? Because they have no intention of giving her back.
Transcript : TopaZ He wants to meet with me.
Where? St.
Ignatius.
You know it? Yeah, just off Forsythe.
He said why? I didn't ask.
But he said they're keeping Sara.
So assuming his intel is good, I'd meet him at the North Pole.
If this is our Nathan card informant, you're going to need back up.
We are just having a conversation.
Last time agent Kelton had a conversation with this guy, he ended up dead.
Well I don't want to scare him off, but if you think I need back up, you're it.
What is this? What am I supposed to do? Go ahead, Max.
Tell her.
Tell her how you feel.
She doesn't belong in our family.
Who, Max? My stepmom.
Sara.
She should just go back to the trailer park in Florida, or wherever.
Then maybe things can go back to the way they used to be.
Life changes.
You have to adapt No.
One day my dad is going to realize there's only one reason why she's with him.
And why is that? Money.
I am so sick of her schoolteacher charity crap.
My mom didn't come from a wealthy family but at least she's got class.
Is that what this is about? You want your mother back? Then we could be happy again.
Get through your anger, Max.
Only your rage will set you free.
Turn it off! - No.
- I hate her.
I want her gone.
Are you okay? The little brat blew me off.
Who? Marcy Collins, she was supposed to meet me here this morning.
You're kidding.
She called me, she wanted to talk.
Dammit, this was going to be big.
Where are you going? To teach the prodigal daughter some manners.
Senator.
Welcome back.
How is she? She'll be glad to see you.
Ben.
Thanks for being here.
Hey, sunshine.
Come here.
Oh, I'm so sorry.
Are you feeling okay? Is there anything I can do? Anything you need? I just need to get out of here.
Of course.
I'll take you home.
Here, let me do that.
Have you talked to mom? No.
No, I got on the plane as soon as I heard.
I'm not even sure how to reach her.
It's okay.
It doesn't matter.
Let's go.
You did what they wanted.
That's right.
So Sara is coming home? Yes.
Yes, she's coming home.
Any idea what this guy looks like? Not a clue.
But something tells me he wants it that way.
The martyrdom of St.
Thomas of Beckett.
I know this.
The saint? No, the blood.
The blood from the cabin.
Sara's fake murder scene.
Same pattern.
Paint by numbers.
We just found his inspiration.
But why does he want us to see it? He's the one trying to bring down Sara's kidnappers, and he wants us to know it.
Thank you for coming.
Is there a reason we can't do this in the open? If my peers were to find out, I'd be killed.
Peers? So you are one of them.
I am.
But I no longer share their vision.
History has shown that greed corrupts man's best intentions.
I need to stop them.
- Stop them from what? - I can't answer that.
But I can tell you Sara Collins current location.
I'm listening.
I'll need something from you in return.
Of course you will.
You are in possession of an important relic.
A cipher-wheel.
Your peers try to steal it.
I need to see it.
Verify its authenticity.
Do we have a deal? My partner is on the other side of that booth with her gun pointed at your head.
Why would I make a deal when I can place you under arrest? If you arrest me they'll know.
They'll move Sara, maybe even kill her.
You get me to Sara, then I'll get you access to your relic.
She's being held in a facility just north of Blakely.
The wilderness preserve? That's right.
That's a very big place, can you be more specific? She's underground, that's all I know.
When she's recovered, I'll contact you again.
Good luck.
Let's go.
That's it? Let's go check it out.
We are just going to let him go? Y eah.
No, I'm taking him in.
If we take him in, we could lose Sara.
- He got my partner killed! - Mei! According to a source inside the court, there will be a late revision to the Supreme Court docket.
Justices will now hear Unites States vs Brockett, a case that could have far-reaching implications on the lives and deaths of several convicts, including Aaron Hensleigh, who is scheduled for execution this Tuesday.
Hensleigh, a theology professor tenured in Georgia State, was convicted of killing his research team in 1999.
Wallace Rainer, a resolute conservative, is likely to vote to affirm the lower court decision.
Given the current makeup of the court, a five to four decision is expected, ensuring that the execution will proceed as planned.
It's been hours, Jeffrey.
You haven't moved.
Well, right now waiting for that call is the only move I've got.
Hey, darling.
Have you heard anything? Not yet, sweetheart.
Marcy.
I'm sorry dad, I just can't look at him right now.
Marcy.
I need your help with something.
Yeah, of course.
Find Jessica, arranged for her to come back.
I tried her cell and Max's but they're not picking up.
You think that's such a good idea? I mean, especially now, with-- No, but it's what Marcy needs.
Try Jessica's friends, maybe her brother.
Someone has to know where she is.
Jessica did not just run out unprompted.
I offered her a disbursement.
What? How much ? 20 grand.
It's what she asked for, and given her behavior in the past, I thought I was acting in your best interests.
$20,000? Well I'll be damned.
Hello? Marcy, it's Dr.
Seimers.
How are you feeling? Did you get the results of my blood? That's why I'm calling.
There were elevated levels of a hormone called progesterone.
It's one possible reason for your miscarriage.
Is it possible that someone did this to me? Well progesterone elevates naturally during pregnancy, but in theory, it could be ingested.
You mean like a pill? Ms.
Collins, while your levels were higher than normal, I wouldn't say it's suspicious.
Thank you doctor.
I thought you might be hungry.
Oh, no thanks.
Maybe later.
Ben.
I don't think it was an accident.
What you mean? I mean someone poisoned me.
Poisoned our baby.
Baby, you've been through a lot.
Hear me! In person.
A couple of months ago? Please, just listen.
He was just nominated to the Supreme Court.
He wanted to make sure that I wouldn't tell anyone about the affair.
Then? And then he wanted more.
For old time's sake.
I said no, but he wouldn't listen.
I tried to fight him off.
He raped me.
Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell me, we could have gone to the cops! - The guy should be in jail! - I didn't want anyone to know.
I just-- I wanted it to go away! - Does your dad know? - No! The baby.
It could have been his.
No, Ben, no.
It could have been his.
That's why I think he did this.
But I know it was yours, Ben.
I know.
You should get some rest.
How long have they been out there? Two hours.
The preserve is over 40 mi.
², it could take some time.
Until now, your Nathan contact played cloak and dagger, now he just pops up and gives us Sara's location? Why the change of tactic? Cloak and dagger didn't work, Rainer got confirmed.
He admits he was involved with the kidnappers.
That's conspiracy.
He's turned.
He's trying to stop the kidnappers from getting what they ultimately want.
Which is what? I don't know.
Agent Lucas.
Senator Collins is here.
Thanks.
Senator.
I've been sitting by the phone.
It's not ringing.
It might not.
You know something? I was contacted by a confidential informant.
He claims that they are holding on to Sara.
Why? Maybe they want something more from you or from her.
That doesn't make sense.
We haven't received other demands.
Senator, we believe that this informant can lead us to Sara's location.
I've heard that before.
- I want to hurt them.
- You and me both.
But as of right now, they hold all the cards.
Maybe not all of them.
Tell me about United States versus Brockett.
They seemed very interested about the case, and now its first up on the court's docket.
It's important to the kidnappers.
How? They want Rainer on the court so he can overturn Brockett and clear the way for the release of a death row inmate named Aaron Hensleigh.
Now at this point, I don't know why.
Excuse me, Senator.
Lucas.
Helicopters have pinpointed several underground heat sources.
I think we found Sara.
Sara? Leave me alone.
I heard a voice before.
A boy.
Who was he? He was my stepson.
What was he saying? They don't want me.
That's not true Sara, that's what they want you to believe.
They were better off without me.
My family was happy.
They are breaking you down.
Fight it.
Ssshh, he's coming.
No, no stop, stop, get off of me! What did they do to her ? She won't be bothering you anymore.
We were just talking.
She was keeping you from the truth.
No! Sara, I hate to see you so upset.
You can talk to me.
I'm here for you, I've always been here for you.
No one enters the room until I get back.
It's open.
Judy Nash is at the front door.
She's insisting that you had an appointment.
You don't have to come down, I can send her away.
No, it's okay.
I'll take care of it.
Hi.
I assumed you had car trouble or something, seeing as how you missed our meeting.
I'm sorry.
No problem.
We can talk now, can I come in? No, I changed my mind.
Marcy, when you called, it seemed like there was something that you wanted to get off your chest.
That was then.
Marcy.
The American people want to hear from you.
They miss Sara just like you and they want to know how you are holding up.
What you're feeling and thinking.
If the American people had any idea what was going on they wouldn't sleep at night.
What do you mean? I'm sorry I wasted your time.
Marcy, wait.
Marcy! All right, we are in the target area, start looking for access points.
We're taking fire! Ambush left! Sniper 10 o'clock.
Cover me.
Do you see anyone else? No, but these tire tracks look fresh.
Lucas.
It's locked from the inside.
I don't suppose they have a doorbell.
We need a breaching charge now.
Fire in the hole! Get back in there! I said get back! We have confirmed kills on three of their guys.
We've got one stable in the hospital and one dead.
They knew you were coming, your informant set you up.
I don't think so.
So what, they just happened to have a sniper posted in the middle of nowhere? They were protecting their interests.
And by their interests you mean Sara Collins, but she wasn't in here.
We believe they moved her shortly before our arrival.
I want to make the phone call to his family.
You will.
Now tell me about containment.
Roadblocks.
Local sheriffs are assisting so we'll have good coverage.
How much of a head start do you think they have? Not much, there were fresh tire tracks outside.
But you can't confirm she was in that vehicle? No.
That's why I called in search and rescue's K-9 unit, the dogs are working off a scent.
Sara's scent? From what? A pillow.
We believe they were holding her in here.
Not exactly the Four Seasons.
Hairs on the pillow match Sara's morphology.
Hairs in the next cell are inconsistent.
Long, straight, and a lighter shade of brown.
Are we looking at more than one kidnapping? Remember Deborah Hensleigh? Sure.
Married to the guy on death row.
We know they were after her, so maybe they got her.
This place was their own private gulag.
It's Lucas.
Where? All right, we're on our way.
The dogs just picked up a scent, 4 miles due east.
Hey.
Hey.
I need your help.
What? Dots? That's what I figured.
So where's Ben? Oh, he had a thing, a job interview.
Good for him.
Marcy, I know your mother gave you the money for Ben's bail.
Dad, I know you don't like him I get that, but-- I'm not upset, I just think you deserve to know the money she gave you she got from J.
T.
What? Why? She's broke.
She took half when you guys split up, she's loaded.
Not anymore.
J.
T.
gave her the money.
In exchange, she agreed to leave the house.
He paid her to leave? J.
T.
arranged it, I had no idea.
J.
T.
doesn't sneeze without you -- It happened while I was in DC, I'm sorry.
I thought she just bailed on me.
You know how I feel about your mother, but what she did, she did for you.
I have to talk to her.
J.
T.
's going to find her.
Thank you.
Why are you getting all dressed up? I spoke with agent Lucas.
Sara might not be coming back as soon as we had hoped.
But you did everything they wanted, right? That's right.
Now I'm going to do what I do best.
Play politics.
The scent is getting stronger.
How close are we? Probably about a half mile or less.
Blood.
Let's keep moving.
Find her, find her! Senator, the honorable Judge Mallright.
Elizabeth.
Thanks for seeing me on such short notice.
Of course.
Jeffrey, I've been following the news, I'm so sorry.
Thank you.
Have a seat.
Your call sounded urgent, what can I do for you? I've always admired you, and it's out of respect for you and the courts that I asked to see you.
I wouldn't be on the court if it weren't for you whispering in the president's ear.
What's going on? I wanted to talk to you about your new colleague, Justice Rainer.
Hoping I'd take it easy on your old friend? I have reason to believe he's going to vote to overturn the Brockett case.
Considering Rainer's conservative leanings, that seems unlikely.
He's being influenced.
How do you know this? I can't say.
Then there's nothing I can do.
You can vote the other way, nullifying his vote.
I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that.
I know it's an unorthodox request.
Unorthodox? Senator, it's illegal.
I understand.
Judge, with this type of information, you probably shouldn't vote at all.
I recuse myself, the vote is deadlocked, Brockett is upheld, and you get exactly what you want.
And given this conversation, you know that's now what I'm forced to do.
I realize that any political capital I've built up with you is now spent.
Whatever your reasons Senator, I hope it was worth it.
So do I.
The blood is everywhere.
Pull them back.
Something died here.
Lucas.
Hands up! Get them up, fellas! Put your weapon down.
- Hey, we are outside preserve! - Put your weapon down! Come up here, slowly.
Mei.
The blood must have thrown off the hounds.
That's a legal kill.
Relax, we're not fish-and-game.
You guys got ID? Did anyone come through here? Just you folks.
How long have you been in the woods? Better part of the day.
All right.
We've got checkpoints set up around the highways.
You see anyone suspicious when you're leaving, report it.
We'll do that.
Thank you, sir.
Ma'am.
We should keep going.
The scent imprint's no good after a mile.
The trail's gone cold.
Thank you for coming.
I thought you to be taller.
I take it you've verified my information.
The facility was there.
But Sara Collins was not.
She was supposed to be.
And I was supposed to get you the cipher.
You didn't bring it.
I left it back at the Field office, along with my patience.
Where did they take her? I'm armed.
So am I.
Where did they take her? If they moved her, then I'm not privy to that information.
We had a deal, I get Sara, you get to spin the wheel.
Don't make the mistake of thinking that this is just about a missing woman.
Why do you really need to see the cipher? So I can destroy it.
You're afraid your friends are going to get it back.
You've seen the lengths to which they'll go to.
And if they get it? What will it tell them? An old story about a new world born out of chaos.
And Sara? She might just be at the center of it all.
Today was an intriguing one in the corridors of judicial power.
Wallace Rainer was confirmed to the Supreme Court, and shortly thereafter he drafted a memo to the chief justice urging him to reorder the docket, and select US vs Brockett to be the first case to be heard when the Court's new term begins.
The case deals with the little-known issue of evidentiary procedure, and if overturned it could send dozens of convicts free.
One of those convicts is Aaron Hensleigh, set to die by lethal injection here in Georgia this Tuesday at 12:01 a.
m.
Now adding further intrigue to the Brockett case is Justice Elizabeth Mallray's decision to recuse herself, citing an unspecified personal bias.
With Mallray abstaining, even more attention will be focused on Justice Rainer as he makes his first ruling in our nation's highest court.
For WCN, I'm Judy Nash.
Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold it.
Hold it.
Where do you think you're going? I think you've been looking for me, I'm I'm Sara Collins.
